Tonight at ten - a royal
wedding in the spring, | 0:00:04 | 0:00:07
as Prince Harry and the American
actress, Meghan Markle, | 0:00:07 | 0:00:09
announce their engagement. | 0:00:09 | 0:00:12
After the announcement, the couple
spoke to the BBC about the proposal, | 0:00:12 | 0:00:15
which happened in London
earlier this month. | 0:00:15 | 0:00:19
It was so sweet and natural
and very romantic. | 0:00:19 | 0:00:24
He got on one knee, | 0:00:24 | 0:00:26
Was it an instant yes? | 0:00:26 | 0:00:27
Yes! | 0:00:27 | 0:00:29 | |
As a matter of fact I could barely
let you finish proposing. | 0:00:29 | 0:00:31
I was like, "Can I say yes?" | 0:00:31 | 0:00:33
She said, "Can I say yes?" | 0:00:33 | 0:00:35
Then there was hugs
and I had the ring, | 0:00:35 | 0:00:37
and I was like, "Can
I give you the ring?" | 0:00:37 | 0:00:39
And she was like, "Oh,
yes - the ring!" | 0:00:39 | 0:00:41
Wearing a ring designed
by the prince, Ms Markle said | 0:00:41 | 0:00:44
she would continue to support
campaigns on equality | 0:00:44 | 0:00:46
and fairness in her new role. | 0:00:46 | 0:00:54
Very early out of the gate I think
you realise once you have access | 0:00:54 | 0:01:00
with that comes a lot of
responsibility. | 0:01:00 | 0:01:02
I'm at Kensington Palace,
where the couple spoke to me | 0:01:02 | 0:01:04
about their story so far,
and their hopes for the future. | 0:01:04 | 0:01:07
We'll have more on the day's events
in just a few moments. | 0:01:07 | 0:01:10
Also tonight... | 0:01:10 | 0:01:11
We report on the plight of young
Rohingya girls forced | 0:01:11 | 0:01:14
into the sex industry,
as refugees in Bangladesh. | 0:01:14 | 0:01:19
In Syria, government forces
are pounding one of the last | 0:01:19 | 0:01:21
rebel held strongholds,
with devastating consequences | 0:01:21 | 0:01:23
for the civilian population. | 0:01:23 | 0:01:27
Two major pharmaceutical firms
say they'll invest more | 0:01:27 | 0:01:29
than a billion pounds in the UK,
creating nearly 2000 jobs. | 0:01:29 | 0:01:35
And in the Ashes series,
England trail Australia following | 0:01:35 | 0:01:37
a heavy defeat in Brisbane. | 0:01:37 | 0:01:42
And coming up on Sportsday
on BBC News... | 0:01:42 | 0:01:45
It was Andy Murray's last year -
but who will take home | 0:01:45 | 0:01:47
the crown for 2017? | 0:01:47 | 0:01:48
We look at this year's nominees
for Sports Personality of the Year. | 0:01:48 | 0:01:56
Good evening. | 0:02:13 | 0:02:15
Prince Harry and the American
actress, Meghan Markle, have | 0:02:15 | 0:02:17
announced their engagement, and
they'll be married in the spring. | 0:02:17 | 0:02:20
As fifth in line to the throne,
Prince Harry had to obtain | 0:02:20 | 0:02:23
Her Majesty's permission to marry,
and Buckingham Palace said today | 0:02:23 | 0:02:25
that The Queen and the Duke
of Edinburgh were "delighted | 0:02:25 | 0:02:28
with the news". | 0:02:28 | 0:02:29
Ms Markle, who's 36 and divorced,
describes herself as a "strong, | 0:02:29 | 0:02:31
confident, mixed-raced
woman", and a feminist. | 0:02:31 | 0:02:36
In their only broadcast interview
today, Harry and Megan spoke | 0:02:36 | 0:02:39
to the BBC's Mishal Husain. | 0:02:39 | 0:02:40
So let's join Mishal
at Kensington Palace tonight. | 0:02:40 | 0:02:46
This was the first time we had heard
the couple speak together, | 0:02:46 | 0:02:49
and it was a first glimpse
into their approach to life | 0:02:49 | 0:02:51
and what brought them together. | 0:02:51 | 0:02:53
The interview took place
inside the palace, close | 0:02:53 | 0:02:55
to the cottage in the grounds
that is their home. | 0:02:55 | 0:02:57
More of what they told me shortly. | 0:02:57 | 0:03:01
But first, this
report from our Royal | 0:03:01 | 0:03:03
Correspondent, Nicholas Witchell | 0:03:03 | 0:03:05
Finally, it's official. | 0:03:05 | 0:03:06
They are engaged to be married. | 0:03:06 | 0:03:09
Prince Harry, fifth in line
to the British throne, | 0:03:09 | 0:03:11
and Meghan Markle, an American,
an actress, a divorcee and, | 0:03:11 | 0:03:18
as she has put it herself,
a woman who is proud | 0:03:18 | 0:03:20
of her mixed-race heritage. | 0:03:20 | 0:03:23
Seldom can a royal
wedding have vindicated | 0:03:23 | 0:03:25
so clearly how times have changed. | 0:03:25 | 0:03:28
REPORTER: How are you both feeling? | 0:03:28 | 0:03:31
Yeah, thrilled! | 0:03:31 | 0:03:34
I'm very glad it's
not raining as well. | 0:03:34 | 0:03:36
Harry was asked when he realised
Meghan was the one. | 0:03:36 | 0:03:40
The very first time we met. | 0:03:40 | 0:03:42
REPORTER: Meghan, can you show
us the ring, please? | 0:03:42 | 0:03:44
Yes. | 0:03:44 | 0:03:45 | |
Ah, yes - the ring. | 0:03:45 | 0:03:47
Designed, it turns out,
by Harry, and including | 0:03:47 | 0:03:50
two diamonds owned
by his late mother. | 0:03:50 | 0:03:54
Harry and Meghan - he 33, she 36. | 0:03:54 | 0:03:56
A happy couple who met 18 months
ago, and are now starting to plan | 0:03:56 | 0:04:01
a wedding which will
take place next spring. | 0:04:01 | 0:04:04
Later, in their engagement interview
with the BBC, the couple | 0:04:04 | 0:04:08
talked about the moment earlier this
month when Harry proposed. | 0:04:08 | 0:04:11
Just an amazing surprise. | 0:04:11 | 0:04:13
It was so sweet and natural
and very romantic. | 0:04:13 | 0:04:18
He got on one knee! | 0:04:18 | 0:04:19
Of course. | 0:04:19 | 0:04:21
Was it an instant yes from you? | 0:04:21 | 0:04:22
Yes! | 0:04:22 | 0:04:23 | |
As a matter of fact,
I could barely let | 0:04:23 | 0:04:25
you finish proposing. | 0:04:25 | 0:04:26
I was like, "Can I say yes now?" | 0:04:26 | 0:04:28
She didn't even let me finish. | 0:04:28 | 0:04:30
Then there was hugs,
and I had the ring in my finger. | 0:04:30 | 0:04:33
I said, "Can I give you the ring?" | 0:04:33 | 0:04:35
She said, "Oh yes, the ring!" | 0:04:35 | 0:04:36
So it was a really nice
moment, it was just the | 0:04:36 | 0:04:39
two of us. | 0:04:39 | 0:04:40
I think I managed to catch her
by surprise as well. | 0:04:40 | 0:04:43
Yeah. | 0:04:43 | 0:04:44 | |
Harry spoke of the instant impact
Meghan had made on him. | 0:04:44 | 0:04:47
The fact that I fell
in love with Meghan so | 0:04:47 | 0:04:49
incredibly quickly was a sort of
confirmation to me that everything, | 0:04:49 | 0:04:54
all the stars were aligned,
everything was just perfect. | 0:04:54 | 0:04:56
This beautiful woman just sort of
literally tripped and fell | 0:04:56 | 0:04:59
into my life, and I
fell into her life. | 0:04:59 | 0:05:03
And the fact that she -
I know the fact that | 0:05:03 | 0:05:06
she will be unbelievably good
at the job part of it as well, | 0:05:06 | 0:05:10
is obviously a huge relief to me,
because she'll be able | 0:05:10 | 0:05:12
to do with everything
else that with it. | 0:05:12 | 0:05:16
Within the royal family
there is, as you'd expect, | 0:05:16 | 0:05:18
great happiness at the news. | 0:05:18 | 0:05:19
The Queen was delighted. | 0:05:19 | 0:05:22
As was Harry's father,
the Prince of Wales. | 0:05:22 | 0:05:24
We are thrilled,
thank you very much. | 0:05:24 | 0:05:26
For both of them. | 0:05:26 | 0:05:27
I hope they'll be very happy indeed.
That's all I can say. | 0:05:27 | 0:05:30
The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge
tweeted their excitement | 0:05:30 | 0:05:33
for the couple, saying it had been
wonderful getting to | 0:05:33 | 0:05:35
know Meghan and to see
how happy the couple were together. | 0:05:35 | 0:05:42
So now, next spring, there will be
a double royal celebration. | 0:05:42 | 0:05:45
Another baby for
William and Catherine. | 0:05:45 | 0:05:47
And a wedding in a so far
unidentified church for Harry and | 0:05:47 | 0:05:50
his bride, Meghan Markle. | 0:05:50 | 0:05:52
Nicholas Witchell, BBC News. | 0:05:52 | 0:05:59
Well, not long after the couple's
first walkabout together - | 0:05:59 | 0:06:01
which took in the palace garden -
I sat down with them | 0:06:01 | 0:06:04
for their first interview. | 0:06:04 | 0:06:05
Meghan Markle has moved here having
given up her acting career, | 0:06:05 | 0:06:08
with life in a different spotlight
lying before her. | 0:06:08 | 0:06:10
She and Prince Harry told me
about the warmth and support | 0:06:10 | 0:06:13
they had had from their families,
but also the poignancy | 0:06:13 | 0:06:16
of his mother's absence. | 0:06:16 | 0:06:18
And I asked them about
how they first met... | 0:06:18 | 0:06:22
We were introduced actually
by a mutual friend. | 0:06:22 | 0:06:27
We should protect
her privacy and not | 0:06:27 | 0:06:28
reveal too much of that. | 0:06:28 | 0:06:30
Protect her privacy,
but it was literally | 0:06:30 | 0:06:33
through her, and then we met
once and then twice, | 0:06:33 | 0:06:36
back-to-back, two dates
in London last July. | 0:06:36 | 0:06:40
Yes. | 0:06:40 | 0:06:41 | |
Beginning of July. | 0:06:41 | 0:06:44
And then it was I think
about three or maybe four weeks | 0:06:44 | 0:06:47
later that I managed
to persuade her to come | 0:06:47 | 0:06:49
and join me in Botswana, and we
camped out with each other under | 0:06:49 | 0:06:53
the stars, and we spent - | 0:06:53 | 0:06:56
she came and joined me for five
days out there which was | 0:06:56 | 0:06:59
absolutely fantastic. | 0:06:59 | 0:07:00
So then we were really
by ourselves, which was | 0:07:00 | 0:07:03
crucial to me to make sure
that we had a chance | 0:07:03 | 0:07:05
to get to know each other. | 0:07:05 | 0:07:07
But the friend who introduced you,
was she trying to set you up? | 0:07:07 | 0:07:10
Yes, so it was
definitely a set-up! | 0:07:10 | 0:07:12
It was a blind date. | 0:07:12 | 0:07:14
It's interesting
because we talk about it | 0:07:14 | 0:07:19
now, and even then, because I'm
from the States you don't grow up | 0:07:19 | 0:07:22
with the same understanding
of the Royal family, | 0:07:22 | 0:07:25
and so while I now
understand now very | 0:07:25 | 0:07:28
clearly there is a global interest
there, I didn't know much about him, | 0:07:28 | 0:07:31
and so the only thing I asked her
when she said she wanted to set us | 0:07:31 | 0:07:36
up was I had one
question, was he nice? | 0:07:36 | 0:07:38
Because if he wasn't
kind, it just didn't | 0:07:38 | 0:07:40
seem like it would make sense. | 0:07:40 | 0:07:41
In the case of your
relationship, unlike for most | 0:07:41 | 0:07:43
people, there's this whole layer
of what it means to get | 0:07:43 | 0:07:46
involved with someone
in the Royal family. | 0:07:46 | 0:07:49
How much of a sense, Meghan,
did you have of the enormity | 0:07:49 | 0:07:52
of what you be getting
into and what it might | 0:07:52 | 0:07:55
mean for your life? | 0:07:55 | 0:07:56
I think I can very safely say, as | 0:07:56 | 0:07:57
naive as it sounds now, having gone
through this learning curve over the | 0:07:57 | 0:08:01
last year and a half,
I did not have any | 0:08:01 | 0:08:03
understanding of what
it would be like. | 0:08:03 | 0:08:07
I don't think either of us did,
but we both said that. | 0:08:07 | 0:08:10
No, I tried to warn you as much as | 0:08:10 | 0:08:12
possible, but I think
both of us were totally | 0:08:12 | 0:08:14
surprised by the reaction | 0:08:14 | 0:08:21
after the first five or six
months we had to ourselves | 0:08:21 | 0:08:24
of what actually happened
from then. | 0:08:24 | 0:08:25
I think you can have as many
conversations as you'd want and | 0:08:25 | 0:08:28
prepare as much as possible,
but we were totally | 0:08:28 | 0:08:30
unprepared for what
happened after that. | 0:08:30 | 0:08:31
The scrutiny? | 0:08:31 | 0:08:33
Well, all sorts. | 0:08:33 | 0:08:36
I think also, there's a | 0:08:36 | 0:08:41
misconception that because I've
worked in the entertainment industry | 0:08:41 | 0:08:43
that this would be something
I would be familiar with, | 0:08:43 | 0:08:46
but even though I'd
been on my show for six years at | 0:08:46 | 0:08:48
that point, and working before that,
I've never been part of tabloid | 0:08:48 | 0:08:51
culture, pop culture, to that degree
and lived a relatively quiet life, | 0:08:51 | 0:08:59
even though I focus so much
on my job. So that was a really | 0:08:59 | 0:09:04
stark difference out of the gate. | 0:09:04 | 0:09:09
And some of | 0:09:09 | 0:09:10
that scrutiny, and you ended
up making a public | 0:09:10 | 0:09:12
statement about it, some
of the | 0:09:12 | 0:09:14 | |
scrutiny was centred
around your ethnicity, Meghan. | 0:09:14 | 0:09:16
When you realised
that, what did you think? | 0:09:16 | 0:09:17
Of course it's disheartening. | 0:09:17 | 0:09:19
You know, it's a shame | 0:09:19 | 0:09:20
that that is the climate
in this world, to focus | 0:09:20 | 0:09:29
that much on that, which
would be discriminatory, in that | 0:09:29 | 0:09:31
sense, but at the end of the day I'm | 0:09:31 | 0:09:34
really proud of who I am
and where I come from. | 0:09:34 | 0:09:36
And we have never put any
focus on that - we've just focused | 0:09:36 | 0:09:40
on who we are as a couple. | 0:09:40 | 0:09:50
It is an immense change. You're
getting a new country out of it and | 0:09:51 | 0:09:56
obviously a husband. I don't see it
as giving anything up. It is a new | 0:09:56 | 0:10:01
chapter. And also keep in mind, I
have been working on my chauffeur | 0:10:01 | 0:10:07
years. So we were very fortunate to
be able to have that sort of | 0:10:07 | 0:10:12
longevity on this series. Once we
had the 100th episode mother, I | 0:10:12 | 0:10:17
thought, I have tick this box, I
feel really proud of the work I have | 0:10:17 | 0:10:22
done. Now it is time to work as a
team with you. | 0:10:22 | 0:10:27
And Meghan, your parents, there were
very happy for you obviously. Do you | 0:10:27 | 0:10:34
think they are worried about the
scale of what you are getting into? | 0:10:34 | 0:10:38
I'm sure at the onset of my parents
and close friends were concerned | 0:10:38 | 0:10:44
because we got quickly swept up in a
media storm. They also had never | 0:10:44 | 0:10:50
seen me so happy. And I think also
once my friends, excuse me, were | 0:10:50 | 0:10:58
able to really meet Harry and my
mum, who we spend a lot of time | 0:10:58 | 0:11:04
with, it was so much fun. Her mum is
amazing. It was just obvious that no | 0:11:04 | 0:11:10
matter what we were being put
through, it was just temporary. And | 0:11:10 | 0:11:14
that we were going to be able to get
through that. Everybody was really | 0:11:14 | 0:11:17
happy. If you talk to my dad, it has
all been worth every effort. And you | 0:11:17 | 0:11:26
have met the Queen? I have Khmers.
What was that like? It's incredible. | 0:11:26 | 0:11:33
I think to be able to meet her
through his lens, not just with his | 0:11:33 | 0:11:41
honour and respect for her as a
monarch, but the love he has further | 0:11:41 | 0:11:45
as his grandmother. All of those
layers have been so important for | 0:11:45 | 0:11:49
me. So when I met her I had such a
deep understanding and of course | 0:11:49 | 0:11:53
incredible respect for being able to
have that time with her. | 0:11:53 | 0:11:56
We've had a really... | 0:11:56 | 0:11:57
She's an incredible woman. | 0:11:57 | 0:11:58
And the corgis took
to you straight away. | 0:11:58 | 0:12:00
That's true! | 0:12:00 | 0:12:01
The last 33 years of
being barked at, this | 0:12:01 | 0:12:04
one walks in, absolutely nothing. | 0:12:04 | 0:12:05
Just laying on my feet
during tea, it was very sweet. | 0:12:05 | 0:12:07
Your ring. | 0:12:07 | 0:12:08
Tell us about the ring. | 0:12:08 | 0:12:09
Oh, yes. | 0:12:09 | 0:12:12
The ring is obviously yellow
gold, her favourite. | 0:12:12 | 0:12:17
And the main stone itself
I sourced from Botswana, | 0:12:17 | 0:12:19
and the little diamonds either side
are | 0:12:19 | 0:12:24 | |
from my mother's
jewellery collection. | 0:12:24 | 0:12:25
To make sure she's
with us on this crazy | 0:12:25 | 0:12:27
journey together. | 0:12:27 | 0:12:30
It's beautiful, and he designed it. | 0:12:30 | 0:12:31
It's incredible. | 0:12:31 | 0:12:35
Yeah. Make sure it stays on that
finger. | 0:12:35 | 0:12:39
Of course! | 0:12:39 | 0:12:41
What does it mean
to you, Meghan, to have those stones | 0:12:41 | 0:12:47
on your finger that once belonged to
Princess Diana? | 0:12:47 | 0:12:49
I think everything
about Harry's thoughtfulness and the | 0:12:49 | 0:12:51
inclusion of that,
and obviously not being able | 0:12:51 | 0:12:53
to meet his mom, it's so important
for me to know that she's | 0:12:53 | 0:13:00
a part of this with us. | 0:13:00 | 0:13:03
What do you
think your mother would have thought | 0:13:03 | 0:13:05
of Meghan or said about her? | 0:13:05 | 0:13:09
They'd be thick as thieves,
without question! | 0:13:09 | 0:13:11
She'd be over the
moon, jumping up and down, | 0:13:11 | 0:13:14
so excited for me.
But then, would've probably been | 0:13:14 | 0:13:16
best friends with Meghan. | 0:13:16 | 0:13:21
It is days like today when I really
miss her being around | 0:13:21 | 0:13:24
and being able to share
her the happy news, | 0:13:24 | 0:13:27
but with the ring and
everything else going | 0:13:27 | 0:13:30
on I'm sure she is...
She is with us. | 0:13:30 | 0:13:32
I'm sure she's with us
and jumping up and | 0:13:32 | 0:13:34
down somewhere else. | 0:13:34 | 0:13:36
Prince Harry, Meghan Markle,
thank you both very | 0:13:36 | 0:13:38
much. | 0:13:38 | 0:13:39 | |
Thank you so much. | 0:13:39 | 0:13:42
Meghan Markle has spent the last
seven years appearing | 0:13:44 | 0:13:47
in the American television series,
Suits, but is now preparing | 0:13:47 | 0:13:50
for an entirely new role. | 0:13:50 | 0:13:52
As well as her career,
she's also used her profile | 0:13:52 | 0:13:54
for charitable and women's causes. | 0:13:54 | 0:13:55
Daniella Relph has
been finding out more | 0:13:55 | 0:13:57
about Meghan Markle,
speaking to those who know her. | 0:13:57 | 0:14:01
Have you heard? | 0:14:03 | 0:14:04
There is breaking news out
of London this morning. | 0:14:04 | 0:14:06
Drum roll, please. | 0:14:06 | 0:14:08
Prince Harry and American
actress Meghan Markle | 0:14:08 | 0:14:11
are engaged - yay! | 0:14:11 | 0:14:12
Congratulations, Harry and Meghan. | 0:14:12 | 0:14:14
We don't know you,
but congratulations! | 0:14:14 | 0:14:17
But we will all get to know
Meghan Markle much better | 0:14:17 | 0:14:20
over the next few months. | 0:14:20 | 0:14:21
She is no ordinary royal fiancee. | 0:14:21 | 0:14:26
Her early acting career
was made up of small | 0:14:26 | 0:14:28
television and film
parts and adverts. | 0:14:28 | 0:14:32
There was also a stint
opening the boxes | 0:14:32 | 0:14:34
on the TV programme Deal Or No Deal. | 0:14:34 | 0:14:36
It's Meghan Markle! | 0:14:36 | 0:14:37
Wow, you're pretty. | 0:14:37 | 0:14:39
Good, you've hit on me. | 0:14:39 | 0:14:40
We can get it out of the way
that I am not interested. | 0:14:40 | 0:14:43
No, I'm sorry... | 0:14:43 | 0:14:44
Before her big break
in the legal drama Suits. | 0:14:44 | 0:14:47
But she sometimes took
issue with the way her character, | 0:14:47 | 0:14:50
Rachel Zane, was portrayed. | 0:14:50 | 0:14:53
This season, every script seemed
to begin with | 0:14:53 | 0:14:57
"Rachel enters wearing a towel." | 0:14:57 | 0:14:59
And I said, "Nope,
not doing it any more. | 0:14:59 | 0:15:01
Not doing it." | 0:15:01 | 0:15:02
And I called
the creator and I was like, | 0:15:02 | 0:15:04
"It's just gratuitous." | 0:15:04 | 0:15:07
Meghan Markle will bring
something different | 0:15:07 | 0:15:08
to the British Royal family. | 0:15:08 | 0:15:10
Born and brought up here
in United States, she is a | 0:15:10 | 0:15:13
proud American. | 0:15:13 | 0:15:15
But she's also
a campaigner with strong | 0:15:15 | 0:15:17
opinions and, if possible,
she won't want her marriage | 0:15:17 | 0:15:19
to limit that side her life. | 0:15:19 | 0:15:28
Her humanitarian work
has taken her around the world, | 0:15:28 | 0:15:30
here in Rwanda. | 0:15:30 | 0:15:33
She's focused
on gender equality. | 0:15:33 | 0:15:36
Particularly as an advocate for
United Nations women. | 0:15:36 | 0:15:39
It's really hands-on,
being part of this, | 0:15:39 | 0:15:42
clean water being here for everyone.
It feels really nice. | 0:15:42 | 0:15:47
I think her
passion for other people and wanting | 0:15:47 | 0:15:49
to create social change
is something that again, | 0:15:49 | 0:15:51
with that platform,
can only be a positive thing. | 0:15:51 | 0:15:55
But she'll be fine.
She'll be great, in fact! | 0:15:55 | 0:16:00
Meghan Markle grew
up in this affluent | 0:16:00 | 0:16:02
neighbourhood of Los Angeles. | 0:16:02 | 0:16:03
Her parents split up when she was
two, and later divorced. | 0:16:03 | 0:16:06
She attended this private
Catholic school in LA. | 0:16:06 | 0:16:13
Her mother is a yoga teacher,
and her father, a respected TV | 0:16:13 | 0:16:16
and film lighting director. | 0:16:16 | 0:16:19
Meghan Markle has always spoken
openly of her mixed-race background. | 0:16:19 | 0:16:23
But in the early months
of her relationship, | 0:16:23 | 0:16:26
Prince Harry issued a statement,
criticising some of the media | 0:16:26 | 0:16:28
coverage for its racial undertones. | 0:16:28 | 0:16:34
It definitely felt very
coded and very racist to | 0:16:34 | 0:16:36
me, and very much like there
was an attempt to make her seem like | 0:16:36 | 0:16:40
an other, like an outsider. | 0:16:40 | 0:16:43
So, yeah, that was pretty startling. | 0:16:43 | 0:16:44
This will be a whole
new world for Meghan | 0:16:44 | 0:16:50
Markle. Swapping the small screen
for a far bigger stage. | 0:16:50 | 0:16:52
Daniella Relph, BBC News. | 0:16:52 | 0:16:58
We're likely to have
details of Meghan Markle | 0:16:58 | 0:17:00
and Prince Harry's wedding tomorrow. | 0:17:00 | 0:17:02
And perhaps in the coming weeks
we'll also start to learn | 0:17:02 | 0:17:05
about what kind of royal she will be | 0:17:05 | 0:17:07
- where she will put
her time and energy. | 0:17:07 | 0:17:10
She and Prince Harry talked today
about work that needed to be done, | 0:17:10 | 0:17:15
the team that they plan to be,
the Commonwealth - a hint perhaps | 0:17:15 | 0:17:18
of their commitment to public life,
as well as their private bond. | 0:17:18 | 0:17:25
Thank you very much for the latest
there tonight at Kensington Palace. | 0:17:25 | 0:17:30
More than 600,000
Rohingya Muslims have now | 0:17:30 | 0:17:32
fled to Bangladesh,
from their homes in | 0:17:32 | 0:17:35
neighbouring Myanmar,
because of the violence there. | 0:17:35 | 0:17:37
But for many, it has
not been the escape | 0:17:37 | 0:17:40
to safety they'd hoped for. | 0:17:40 | 0:17:42
They are extremely vulnerable,
many have no possessions, | 0:17:42 | 0:17:45
and some are becoming victims
of sexual exploitation. | 0:17:45 | 0:17:49
Reeta Chakrabarti
is in Bangladesh and | 0:17:49 | 0:17:50
we can join her now. | 0:17:50 | 0:17:59
Well, the Rohingya refugees have
been camped here for around three | 0:17:59 | 0:18:02
months now. In the camps the basic
problems over food and shelter | 0:18:02 | 0:18:06
continue. But we have uncovered here
away from the camps a troubling | 0:18:06 | 0:18:13
issue of Rohingya girls and women
being forced into the sex trade with | 0:18:13 | 0:18:16
few apparent means of escape. | 0:18:16 | 0:18:21
This is Cox's Bazar. | 0:18:21 | 0:18:23
Famous for being the
world's longest sandy | 0:18:23 | 0:18:28
beach, and the town
that is nearest the refugee camps. | 0:18:28 | 0:18:30
It looks idyllic. | 0:18:30 | 0:18:31
But as day turns to night,
a seedier side emerges. | 0:18:31 | 0:18:34
A huge and desperate
new population nearby | 0:18:34 | 0:18:36
provides fresh opportunities
for exploitation. | 0:18:36 | 0:18:41
And we've spoken to some young
female refugees who are | 0:18:41 | 0:18:45
in real danger. | 0:18:45 | 0:18:47
Rohingya girls alone
and in their teens are being traded | 0:18:47 | 0:18:50
by their own people
and local Bangladeshis. | 0:18:50 | 0:18:55
They are sold for sex. | 0:18:55 | 0:18:59
And in the case of one 17-year-old
girl, kept in a hotel by Rohingya | 0:18:59 | 0:19:02
men and treated like a slave. | 0:19:02 | 0:19:06
I asked her if she gets paid for any
of the work she does. | 0:19:23 | 0:19:27
Nothing? | 0:19:29 | 0:19:30
Incredible, isn't it? | 0:19:32 | 0:19:33
She is just a slave. | 0:19:33 | 0:19:35
Another girl who was just 15
told us she escaped by | 0:19:42 | 0:19:46
boat from Myanmar after her mother
was shot dead by the military. | 0:19:46 | 0:19:52
She used her only possessions to pay
the boatman, who then attacked her. | 0:19:52 | 0:19:55
Once she got to Bangladesh, a local
woman who she thought would help | 0:20:09 | 0:20:14
her, took her home.
She had nowhere else to go. | 0:20:14 | 0:20:18
And now the woman forces her
to sleep with several men a night. | 0:20:18 | 0:20:28
Do the men pay you when
they have sex with you? | 0:20:29 | 0:20:32
These two girls are
now being helped by a | 0:21:03 | 0:21:06
local group, but there are many more
in this town suffering the | 0:21:06 | 0:21:09
same fate. | 0:21:09 | 0:21:12
They all came to escape
the violence at home. | 0:21:12 | 0:21:14
And now find themselves
in a different kind of hell. | 0:21:14 | 0:21:24
Well it's hard to know how many
women and girls are involved in | 0:21:24 | 0:21:27
this. One estimate puts it at around
6,000. But this is an exploitation | 0:21:27 | 0:21:33
that is by its nature hidden. The
two girls in that report were never | 0:21:33 | 0:21:37
registered with the authorities.
They were never taken to the camps, | 0:21:37 | 0:21:40
the boatmen brought them here to the
town and delivered them to the | 0:21:40 | 0:21:44
network. These networks are being
run by local Bangladeshis but also | 0:21:44 | 0:21:50
by Rohingya themselves who came in a
previous wave. Depressing aspect to | 0:21:50 | 0:21:55
this ongoing crisis.
On the crisis of course we have been | 0:21:55 | 0:21:59
reporting on it for months, this is
your second visit there. I am | 0:21:59 | 0:22:04
wondering what changes have you seen
since your previous visit? Well, on | 0:22:04 | 0:22:09
the surface things have changed. The
camps appear more organised than | 0:22:09 | 0:22:13
before. You don't see people
sleeping by the roadside in the way | 0:22:13 | 0:22:18
I did on my last visit. You go to
the camps and conditions are still | 0:22:18 | 0:22:21
very poor. There is a real lack of
food, the shelters are very flimsy. | 0:22:21 | 0:22:27
The sanitation is poor. These are
conditions in which health problems | 0:22:27 | 0:22:33
are rife and experts are having to
deal with the psychological issues | 0:22:33 | 0:22:37
people have come with and tomorrow
night I will be reporting on how | 0:22:37 | 0:22:42
doctors and counsellors are dealing
with people who are severely | 0:22:42 | 0:22:44
traumatised.
Thank you very much. | 0:22:44 | 0:22:50
Two major pharmaceutical firms have
announced they are investing | 0:22:53 | 0:22:58
more than a billion pounds in
the UK, creating nearly 2,000 jobs | 0:22:58 | 0:23:01
in London and Manchester. | 0:23:01 | 0:23:07
The news came on the day
the government unveiled | 0:23:07 | 0:23:09
its industrial strategy, | 0:23:09 | 0:23:11
designed to boost productivity
and attract investment in areas such | 0:23:11 | 0:23:13
as artificial intelligence,
driverless cars and clean energy. | 0:23:13 | 0:23:15
Simon Jack has the story. | 0:23:15 | 0:23:16
Investing in new drugs is just
the kind of medicine the economy | 0:23:16 | 0:23:19
needs after the bleak diagnosis
of slowing growth and poor | 0:23:19 | 0:23:21
productivity it received last week. | 0:23:21 | 0:23:23
The Government's plan to incentivise
investment arrives at a time | 0:23:23 | 0:23:28
when businesses are wary
of Brexit uncertainty. | 0:23:28 | 0:23:32
We are the place that is going to be
able to take a lead in these | 0:23:32 | 0:23:35
new industries of the future. | 0:23:35 | 0:23:37
At a time when companies
are making investments | 0:23:37 | 0:23:40
and in the context of Brexit,
to set that out with a clarity | 0:23:40 | 0:23:44
that we have I think
is all the more important. | 0:23:44 | 0:23:47
The way it's supposed
to work is basically this. | 0:23:47 | 0:23:49
The Government invests money
in research and development. | 0:23:49 | 0:23:52
Academic institutions work
in partnership with business | 0:23:52 | 0:23:55
to provide skills and know-how. | 0:23:55 | 0:24:00
The Government provides test beds
for new products like faster trials | 0:24:00 | 0:24:04
of new drugs or public roads
for driverless cars, then hey | 0:24:04 | 0:24:07
presto, private companies invest. | 0:24:07 | 0:24:09
This gene therapy company
in Oxford likes the approach. | 0:24:09 | 0:24:12
This new strategy is very important
for business like ours. | 0:24:12 | 0:24:14
It allows us to look at what we can
work on in the future, | 0:24:14 | 0:24:17
look at the grants we can get
to help us expand the business | 0:24:17 | 0:24:21
and make our processes better
to keep us at the leading edge | 0:24:21 | 0:24:23
of our science. | 0:24:23 | 0:24:24
It's perhaps no surprise
the Government chose life sciences | 0:24:24 | 0:24:27
to be the poster child
for its new industrial strategy. | 0:24:27 | 0:24:29
These are highly skilled,
highly productive jobs | 0:24:29 | 0:24:32
in an industry which seems to have
no problem attracting investment. | 0:24:32 | 0:24:35
Most of the UK economy
is not like this. | 0:24:35 | 0:24:38
The Government's challenge will be
to increase productivity in areas | 0:24:38 | 0:24:41
of the economy where workers
are more likely to drive white vans | 0:24:41 | 0:24:44
than wear white coats. | 0:24:44 | 0:24:46
Most people work in what sometimes
we call the everyday economy - | 0:24:46 | 0:24:49
shops, care homes, public services
as well and we think in order | 0:24:49 | 0:24:53
to boost their earning power,
which is what the Secretary of State | 0:24:53 | 0:24:56
said he wanted to do,
we need a strategy that | 0:24:56 | 0:24:58
takes them into account. | 0:24:58 | 0:25:01
Government intervention in industry
has a chequered history | 0:25:01 | 0:25:03
with memories of money poured
into failing companies | 0:25:03 | 0:25:05
like British Leyland. | 0:25:05 | 0:25:08
The Labour Party supports Government
intervention and doesn't | 0:25:08 | 0:25:11
think the Conservatives
are intervening enough. | 0:25:11 | 0:25:13
It seems to be a repackaging
of existing policies and commitment | 0:25:13 | 0:25:19
and it doesn't go to the extent
we would have liked it to, to really | 0:25:19 | 0:25:23
rebuild our economy and give
businesses the support they need. | 0:25:23 | 0:25:25
Will the plan work? | 0:25:25 | 0:25:26
Of the two companies
who announced investments today, | 0:25:26 | 0:25:30
one told the BBC it would have done
it with or without the strategy | 0:25:30 | 0:25:33
and the second said it hadn't
finalised the size of its investment | 0:25:33 | 0:25:36
but the life sciences industry
broadly welcomed it. | 0:25:36 | 0:25:38
There have been industrial
strategies before and you haven't | 0:25:38 | 0:25:40
heard the last of this one. | 0:25:40 | 0:25:42
Simon Jack, BBC News. | 0:25:42 | 0:25:45
In Syria, one of the last remaining
rebel-held strongholds has come | 0:25:45 | 0:25:48
under renewed attack
from Syrian Government forces, | 0:25:48 | 0:25:52
according to aid agencies and human
rights groups on the ground. | 0:25:52 | 0:25:54
Russia has called for a ceasefire
there for the next two days. | 0:25:54 | 0:25:57
Medecins Sans Frontieres says
dozens of people have been | 0:25:57 | 0:26:04
killed in eastern Ghouta,
near Damascus, and that continued | 0:26:04 | 0:26:06
bombardment is stretching medical
facilities to the limit. | 0:26:06 | 0:26:08
This report from our diplomatic
correspondent James Landale contains | 0:26:08 | 0:26:10
some distressing images. | 0:26:10 | 0:26:13
If you thought the war in Syria
was over, think again. | 0:26:13 | 0:26:20
This is Ghouta, east
of Damascus, one of the last | 0:26:20 | 0:26:28
rebel held strongholds -
and in recent days the target | 0:26:28 | 0:26:32
of some of the heaviest government
air strikes in months. | 0:26:32 | 0:26:36
Aid agencies and UK-based observers
said more than 40 people have been | 0:26:36 | 0:26:39
killed since yesterday alone. | 0:26:39 | 0:26:43
In theory, Russia, Turkey and Iran
have designated this area | 0:26:43 | 0:26:46
a non-escalation zone. | 0:26:46 | 0:26:50
In truth, it is
exactly the opposite. | 0:26:50 | 0:26:54
Ghouta may have been under siege
and under fire for four years now, | 0:26:54 | 0:26:57
but in recent days it's been subject
to wave after wave of strikes | 0:26:57 | 0:27:01
by warplanes and artillery. | 0:27:01 | 0:27:06
The United Nations special envoy
to Syria could not hide his fears. | 0:27:06 | 0:27:09
I want to register at the moment my
concern, serious concern, | 0:27:09 | 0:27:12
at the tremendous escalation
of violence in eastern Ghouta | 0:27:12 | 0:27:16
in these last weeks. | 0:27:16 | 0:27:18
At least 45 people have
been reported wounded | 0:27:18 | 0:27:22
in the last couple of days,
adding to the many hundreds have | 0:27:22 | 0:27:27
been taken to hospital
since the new offensive began | 0:27:27 | 0:27:30
two weeks ago. | 0:27:30 | 0:27:32
Including, inevitably,
many children. | 0:27:32 | 0:27:35
More than 350,000 people are packed
into this besieged area | 0:27:35 | 0:27:39
outside Syria's capital,
and this means that casualties | 0:27:39 | 0:27:42
are high, but it also means
there is an acute lack of food | 0:27:42 | 0:27:46
and medical supplies. | 0:27:46 | 0:27:50
In apparent retaliation,
rebel groups fired mortars from here | 0:27:50 | 0:27:53
into government held areas. | 0:27:53 | 0:27:56
The UN this week will try to reopen
peace talks in Geneva, | 0:27:56 | 0:27:59
but there are few hopes of progress. | 0:27:59 | 0:28:03
James Landale, BBC News. | 0:28:03 | 0:28:08
Six former British soldiers who've
been in prison in India for more | 0:28:08 | 0:28:11
than four years are to be released. | 0:28:11 | 0:28:13
The men, known as the Chennai Six,
were arrested along with 29 others | 0:28:13 | 0:28:17
on weapons charges in 2013. | 0:28:17 | 0:28:19
They'd been working as security
guards on ships in the Indian Ocean. | 0:28:19 | 0:28:22
The group, who were acquitted
by an appeals court, have always | 0:28:22 | 0:28:25
maintained their innocence. | 0:28:25 | 0:28:29
West Yorkshire Police say five
people killed when a stolen car hit | 0:28:29 | 0:28:32
a tree in Leeds on Saturday night
were all in the vehicle | 0:28:32 | 0:28:35
when it crashed. | 0:28:35 | 0:28:37
Two men and three boys died. | 0:28:37 | 0:28:39
The youngest victim
was 12 years old. | 0:28:39 | 0:28:41
A 15-year-old boy is being held
on suspicion of causing death | 0:28:41 | 0:28:44
by dangerous driving. | 0:28:44 | 0:28:46
Another teenager, who wasn't
in the car, has been released | 0:28:46 | 0:28:48
pending further inquiries. | 0:28:48 | 0:28:52
More than 100,000 people have been
ordered to leave their homes | 0:28:52 | 0:28:57
after warnings that the Mount Agung
volcano on the island of Bali | 0:28:57 | 0:29:00
could erupt at any moment. | 0:29:00 | 0:29:02
Columns of thick grey
smoke have been billowing | 0:29:02 | 0:29:04
from the volcano since last week. | 0:29:04 | 0:29:06
Bali's main airport has been
closed, leaving thousands | 0:29:06 | 0:29:07
of tourists stranded. | 0:29:07 | 0:29:12
Cricket, and England have lost
the first Ashes Test | 0:29:12 | 0:29:14
in Brisbane by ten wickets. | 0:29:14 | 0:29:17
Australia needed just 56 runs to win
and reached that target | 0:29:17 | 0:29:21
in a little more than an hour,
to complete a bad couple of days | 0:29:21 | 0:29:24
for England on and off the field,
as Andy Swiss reports from Brisbane. | 0:29:24 | 0:29:27
Head-to-head on the pitch,
and it seems off it. | 0:29:27 | 0:29:31
As Australia cruised
to victory the focus | 0:29:31 | 0:29:34
was on Jonny Bairstow behind
the stumps and Cameron | 0:29:34 | 0:29:37
Bancroft in front. | 0:29:37 | 0:29:39
What did happen between them
in a bar in Perth four weeks ago? | 0:29:39 | 0:29:43
Well, after hitting the winning
runs, Bancroft revealed Bairstow's | 0:29:43 | 0:29:46
rather bizarre greeting. | 0:29:46 | 0:29:51
He just greeted me with -
yeah, just a headbutt kind of thing. | 0:29:51 | 0:29:55
So, I was expecting a handshake. | 0:29:55 | 0:29:57
As for Bairstow himself, well,
he insisted the incident had been | 0:29:57 | 0:29:59
blown out of all proportion. | 0:29:59 | 0:30:02
There's no intent, no malice
about anything during the evening. | 0:30:02 | 0:30:05
As you could see out there today,
there's no animosity between myself, | 0:30:05 | 0:30:09
Cameron, any of the other
Australian players. | 0:30:09 | 0:30:14
Well, England say there'll be
no disciplinary action | 0:30:14 | 0:30:16
against Jonny Bairstow
but after losing this match it's | 0:30:16 | 0:30:20
a distraction they hardly need
and one that raises more questions | 0:30:20 | 0:30:23
about players' behaviour. | 0:30:23 | 0:30:27
After the incident involving
Ben Stokes in Bristol, and now this, | 0:30:27 | 0:30:30
the ECB say they'll be reminding
the squad of their responsibilities. | 0:30:30 | 0:30:33
We can't be naive. | 0:30:33 | 0:30:36
We need to be smart,
we need to be measured. | 0:30:36 | 0:30:39
We need to understand
what we can and can't do, | 0:30:39 | 0:30:42
while at the same time trying
to enjoy one of the great | 0:30:42 | 0:30:46
tours you could ever go
on as an England cricketer. | 0:30:46 | 0:30:49
But for now this tour
seems far from great. | 0:30:49 | 0:30:51
England's Ashes has begun
in defeat and controversy. | 0:30:51 | 0:30:54
Andy Swiss, BBC News, Brisbane. | 0:30:54 | 0:31:02
That's it from us. | 0:31:02 | 0:31:04
In a moment the news where you are,
but we'll leave you with some | 0:31:04 | 0:31:07
of today's scenes at Kensington
Palace. | 0:31:07 | 0:31:08
Have a good night. | 0:31:08 | 0:31:14
When I walked into that room
and saw her and there | 0:31:14 | 0:31:18
she was sitting there,
I was like, OK, well, I'm | 0:31:18 | 0:31:20
going to have to up my game here! | 0:31:20 | 0:31:23
Just an amazing surprise. | 0:31:23 | 0:31:26
It was so sweet and natural
and very romantic. | 0:31:26 | 0:31:30
He got on one knee. | 0:31:30 | 0:31:33
Have you heard, there is breaking
news out of London this morning. | 0:31:33 | 0:31:36
Drum roll, please. | 0:31:36 | 0:31:37
Prince Harry and American Meghan
Markle are engaged to be married. | 0:31:37 | 0:31:40
It's fantastic. | 0:31:40 | 0:31:41
Oh, lovely! | 0:31:41 | 0:31:42
Marvellous. | 0:31:42 | 0:31:45
My mom just texted me about it
so we wanted to come and see. | 0:31:45 | 0:31:48
It's really cool. | 0:31:48 | 0:31:49
I think it's great. | 0:31:49 | 0:31:50
Another Royal wedding,
something to look forward | 0:31:50 | 0:31:52
to in times of trouble. | 0:31:52 | 0:31:53
We're thrilled, thank you very
much, for both of them. | 0:31:53 | 0:31:55
I hope they'll be very happy indeed. | 0:31:55 | 0:31:58
All the stars were aligned. | 0:31:59 | 0:32:02 |
