Good evening. | 0:00:33 | 0:00:33
Good evening. | 0:00:51 | 0:00:52
Snow and ice have led

Passengers at Glasgow
airport faced delays, | 0:00:57 | 0:00:58
after heavy snow caused flights
to be suspended for a while. | 0:00:58 | 0:01:01
There was snow too across northern
England and the southern Pennines. | 0:01:01 | 0:01:08
The RAC has warned that driving
conditions will be very | 0:01:08 | 0:01:10
difficult, if not impossible,
in the worst-affected areas. | 0:01:10 | 0:01:12
Our correspondent
Judith Moritz reports. | 0:01:12 | 0:01:15
Grounded at Glasgow -
flights at the city's airport | 0:01:15 | 0:01:19
were suspended after snow
settled quickly overnight. | 0:01:19 | 0:01:25
The airport reopened by mid-morning,
but managers have apologised | 0:01:25 | 0:01:27
for the knock-on disruption
which was caused. | 0:01:27 | 0:01:34
Temperatures plummeted to as low
as minus 12 Celsius in Scotland. | 0:01:34 | 0:01:37
The ploughs were out,
shovelling industrial quantities | 0:01:37 | 0:01:40
of snow on the M90 motorway
near Dunfermline, though it | 0:01:40 | 0:01:42
wasn't enough to keep
all drivers on the road. | 0:01:42 | 0:01:51
In towns and villages
nearby, the spades were | 0:01:51 | 0:01:52
out to clear the way. | 0:01:52 | 0:01:56
She's just come in for a packet
of cigarettes, and she's decided | 0:01:56 | 0:01:59
to clear my front path away,
and that's community spirit for you. | 0:01:59 | 0:02:02
Heavy snow also fell
in the north of England, | 0:02:02 | 0:02:04
where a hundred gritters were sent
out onto the road network | 0:02:04 | 0:02:07
to keep traffic moving. | 0:02:07 | 0:02:09
The snow has been falling steadily
all morning across swathes | 0:02:09 | 0:02:11
of northern England. | 0:02:11 | 0:02:14
As predicted, it's been settling
most in areas like this, | 0:02:14 | 0:02:17
just outside Huddersfield,
up here on the higher ground. | 0:02:17 | 0:02:24
In Cumbria, hazardous
conditions left some vehicles | 0:02:24 | 0:02:25
stranded on the A590,
and there were also delays | 0:02:25 | 0:02:28
on other main roads. | 0:02:28 | 0:02:37
Staff at the Highways England
control room in Wakefield | 0:02:37 | 0:02:40
have been monitoring
the motorways and A-roads. | 0:02:40 | 0:02:41
The next thing we're looking
towards is the threat of ice | 0:02:41 | 0:02:44
for this evening and overnight,
we've got teams of gritters working | 0:02:44 | 0:02:47
24/7, traffic officers patrolling
the network as well, | 0:02:47 | 0:02:48
and obviously a team
here in Yorkshire and the North East | 0:02:48 | 0:02:51
working from the control room
to make sure that that | 0:02:51 | 0:02:53
impact's not too severe. | 0:02:53 | 0:02:57
Drivers are advised only
to travel if necessary. | 0:02:57 | 0:02:58

Anti-government protests have spread
to more cities in Iran , | 0:03:04 | 0:03:06
despite a crackdown
by the authorities. | 0:03:06 | 0:03:08
Thousands of people have
taken to the streets | 0:03:08 | 0:03:10
to protest over rising prices,
corruption, and the cost of Iran's | 0:03:10 | 0:03:15
military involvement
in regional conflicts. | 0:03:15 | 0:03:16
Wyre Davies reports. | 0:03:16 | 0:03:25
These are extremely rare sights. | 0:03:25 | 0:03:27
Iranian cities hit by large
anti-government protests. | 0:03:27 | 0:03:31
This is the western
city of Kermanshah. | 0:03:31 | 0:03:33
Despite the repressive
action of the police, | 0:03:33 | 0:03:35
the protests have quickly
grown and spread. | 0:03:35 | 0:03:43
Iranians have suffered tremendous
economic hardship in the last | 0:03:43 | 0:03:45
decade with a huge fall
in living standards. | 0:03:45 | 0:03:50
But what started as a protest
against rising prices has grown | 0:03:50 | 0:03:54
into wide anger against strict
clerical rule and Iran's supreme | 0:03:54 | 0:03:56
leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. | 0:03:56 | 0:04:01
There is seething discontent,
with Iranians spending | 0:04:01 | 0:04:03
money on wars abroad,
on spreading Shiaism broad, | 0:04:03 | 0:04:07
supporting Hezbollah abroad. | 0:04:07 | 0:04:11
And that has changed the character
of the demonstration | 0:04:11 | 0:04:14
into a political one,
undermining the whole | 0:04:14 | 0:04:15
clerical regime now. | 0:04:15 | 0:04:19
Iran's relatively moderate
president, Hassan Rouhani, | 0:04:22 | 0:04:23
has promised the benefits
of economic growth after | 0:04:23 | 0:04:25
an international deal
to limit its nuclear activities. | 0:04:25 | 0:04:32
But those promises have
failed to materialise. | 0:04:32 | 0:04:33
Britain will be watching
developments closely. | 0:04:33 | 0:04:35
On a recent visit,
the Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson | 0:04:35 | 0:04:37
raised the detention of the British
woman Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe, | 0:04:37 | 0:04:41
held in an Iranian jail
for more than 600 days. | 0:04:41 | 0:04:49
It's become a serious issue
between London and Tehran. | 0:04:49 | 0:04:52
It's too early to say if the regime
is under serious threat. | 0:04:52 | 0:04:55
These are the biggest protests
in Iran for almost a decade | 0:04:55 | 0:04:58
and the government will greater
force if it feels | 0:04:58 | 0:05:00
it is losing control. | 0:05:00 | 0:05:01
Wyre Davies, BBC News. | 0:05:01 | 0:05:04
A huge fire at an office
and restaurant complex in the Indian | 0:05:08 | 0:05:11
city of Mumbai has killed at least
14 people including young women | 0:05:11 | 0:05:14
attending a birthday party. | 0:05:14 | 0:05:17
The blaze erupted after midnight
in the popular Kamala Mills | 0:05:17 | 0:05:20
compound, and engulfed the building
in just half an hour. | 0:05:20 | 0:05:29
The New York fire department says
the blaze that killed 12 people, | 0:05:30 | 0:05:33
including four children,
in the Bronx area of the city | 0:05:33 | 0:05:35
appears to have been caused
by a child playing with a stove. | 0:05:35 | 0:05:38
Investigators believe
an unattended 3 -year-old boy | 0:05:38 | 0:05:40
accidentally started the blaze -
described as the deadliest | 0:05:40 | 0:05:42
in the city for at least 25 years. | 0:05:42 | 0:05:48
The Labour peer, Lord Adonis,
is stepping down from his role | 0:05:48 | 0:05:50
advising the government
on major infrastructure projects. | 0:05:50 | 0:05:52
In a draft resignation letter,
the former transport secretary | 0:05:52 | 0:05:54
criticised Theresa May's approach
to Brexit, and claimed that she has | 0:05:54 | 0:05:56
become the "voice of Ukip"
within the Conservative party. | 0:05:56 | 0:06:07
Two men have been charged with
preparing an act of terrorism. They | 0:06:16 | 0:06:20
appeared by video link before
Westminster Magistrates' Court and | 0:06:20 | 0:06:24
were remanded in custody. | 0:06:24 | 0:06:27
Researchers in Scotland,
who saved the leg of a dog | 0:06:27 | 0:06:30
using a new technique to grow bones
in a laboratory, say they now hope | 0:06:30 | 0:06:33
to try it on human beings. | 0:06:33 | 0:06:35
The dog, Eva, would have had her leg
amputated had it not been for this | 0:06:35 | 0:06:38
pioneering treatment. | 0:06:38 | 0:06:39
The team at Glasgow University say
the first human trials are due | 0:06:39 | 0:06:42
to take place in three years' time. | 0:06:42 | 0:06:44
Our science correspondent Pallab
Ghosh has this exclusive report. | 0:06:44 | 0:06:47
Eva! | 0:06:47 | 0:06:49 | |
There's no holding her back,
but last year Eva's front right leg | 0:06:49 | 0:06:52
was broken in a road accident. | 0:06:52 | 0:06:53
Her vet tried everything,
but nothing worked. | 0:06:53 | 0:06:57
Her entire leg was
going to be amputated. | 0:06:57 | 0:07:02
Well, nine, ten months, she'd been
unable to get out and have walks, | 0:07:02 | 0:07:05
anything other than go out
to the toilet. | 0:07:05 | 0:07:07
But to Fiona Kirkland's delight,
her dog was saved by an experimental | 0:07:07 | 0:07:09
bone-growing technique. | 0:07:09 | 0:07:14
It's absolutely fantastic. | 0:07:14 | 0:07:16
We're just so pleased
to have our dog back, | 0:07:16 | 0:07:20
fit, active, healthy. | 0:07:20 | 0:07:21
Eva's vet showed me the problem. | 0:07:21 | 0:07:27
The blood supply to the edges
of the bones has failed, | 0:07:27 | 0:07:30
so it wasn't able to heal the break. | 0:07:30 | 0:07:33
The scientists coated the dead areas
with their artificial bone, | 0:07:33 | 0:07:36
and after just six weeks,
it was completely mended. | 0:07:36 | 0:07:42
The artificial bone mix was made
at Glasgow University. | 0:07:42 | 0:07:45
It consists of sterilised chips that
are coated with bone cells | 0:07:45 | 0:07:48
and a chemical that make them grow,
rather like a fertiliser. | 0:07:48 | 0:07:52
Well, clearly, we want to look
at treating more dogs and possibly | 0:07:52 | 0:07:55
even cats who have had broken bones,
but also other areas we can help | 0:07:55 | 0:07:59
these veterinary patients,
so things like joint fusion, | 0:07:59 | 0:08:01
where they've had a tendon injury
and they need their joint held | 0:08:01 | 0:08:04
together so they can walk properly. | 0:08:04 | 0:08:08
The researchers are so amazed
at the success they've had | 0:08:08 | 0:08:12
in treating Eva they want to try out
the technique on people. | 0:08:12 | 0:08:15
They plan to be the first
researchers in the world to grow | 0:08:15 | 0:08:19
bone in their lab and put it
into a patient in three years' time. | 0:08:19 | 0:08:23
And these are the people that
could be most helped. | 0:08:23 | 0:08:25
It's 20 years since Princess Diana
brought the issue of landmine | 0:08:25 | 0:08:28
victims to the world's attention. | 0:08:28 | 0:08:31
Their limbs usually
have to be amputated. | 0:08:31 | 0:08:34
Landmine campaigners are funding
the new research so it can be used | 0:08:34 | 0:08:37
to grow some of their bone back
and attach an artificial leg. | 0:08:37 | 0:08:46
Well, if they are able
to have a prosthetic limb, | 0:08:50 | 0:08:52
it would make all the difference
to their life, being able | 0:08:52 | 0:08:55
to provide for their family,
instead of having to be a burden | 0:08:55 | 0:08:58
on their family. | 0:08:58 | 0:08:59
It's been a happy outcome
for Eva and her owners. | 0:08:59 | 0:09:08 |
