The Iranian President warns that

violence and vandalism

0:00:070:00:09

won't be tolerated -

after four days of demonstrations.

0:00:090:00:11

Hassan Rouhani appears

on television, to say people

0:00:110:00:16

have the right to protest -

but that his country's problems stem

0:00:160:00:20

from international sanctions.

Divers recover the bodies

of six people - four

believed to be British -

who died when a sightseeing plane

crashed in Australia.

Manchester City's 18 game-winning

run in the Premier League comes to

0:00:470:00:54

an end.

0:00:540:00:57

And New Year's celebrations get

underway around the globe,

0:00:570:01:03

as we prepare to welcome in 2018.

0:01:030:01:07

Good evening and welcome

to the BBC News at Ten.

0:01:190:01:24

As anti-government protestors

in Iran have gathered for fourth

0:01:240:01:26

day of demonstrations,

the country's president,

0:01:260:01:28

Hassan Rouhani, has said Iranians

have the right to protest,

0:01:280:01:30

but not resort to

violence and vandalism.

0:01:300:01:32

His comments are the first

by a senior figure in the country

0:01:320:01:35

since widespread protests

began on Thursday.

0:01:350:01:39

Today, police in Tehran used water

cannon against protesters and some

0:01:390:01:41

social media was banned.

0:01:410:01:44

Kasra Naji of the BBC

Persian Service has this report.

0:01:440:01:53

The centre of Tehran during the

fourth day of anti-government

0:01:530:01:55

protests. These protesters are

shouting death to the dictator, a

0:01:550:02:03

reference to Iran's supreme leader.

The protests are the most serious

0:02:030:02:10

challenge to the Iranian clerical

regime for many years. As the night

0:02:100:02:14

fell, there were reports of

demonstrations from at least a dozen

0:02:140:02:18

or so cities up and down the

country. President Rouhani has

0:02:180:02:22

finally made a comment on the

unrest, days after they started, the

0:02:220:02:28

first Iranian leader to do so. He

said Iranians had a right to protest

0:02:280:02:35

but not to violence and destruction.

He said Iran had many problems that

0:02:350:02:40

dated back to previous years, a

reference to years of international

0:02:400:02:44

sanctions because of its nuclear

programme. The wave of

0:02:440:02:49

demonstrations throughout the

country started on Thursday here in

0:02:490:02:55

Mashhad in the north-east with what

was supposed to be a small protest

0:02:550:03:00

by the hardliners to criticise the

economic policies of the government

0:03:000:03:04

of President Rouhani, something that

quickly got out of control. Earlier

0:03:040:03:10

in the day, the government moved to

limit access in Iran to the internet

0:03:100:03:14

and to uphiller social media apps

like Telegram. But in spite of these

0:03:140:03:22

efforts, more and more videos are

being posted on social media, and

0:03:220:03:25

there has been more violence. Here

in this Western city, for example,

0:03:250:03:32

where a number of people are

reported to have been injured.

0:03:320:03:37

President Rouhani's latest words are

unlikely to come these

0:03:370:03:42

demonstrators, who are calling for

the overthrow of the government.

0:03:420:03:49

Firefighters have been

tackling a major fire

0:03:490:03:52

at the Liverpool Echo Arena.

0:03:530:03:54

The fire broke out in

the multi-storey car park

0:03:540:03:56

earlier this evening.

0:03:560:03:57

Steve Saul is at the Arena for us.

0:03:570:03:59

Steve, what more can you tell us?

0:03:590:04:06

This is a major operation for

Merseyside fire and rescue service

0:04:060:04:08

this evening. 1600 cars are thought

to be involved in this major blaze

0:04:080:04:13

at the multistorey car park to the

side of the Liverpool Echo Arena

0:04:130:04:17

close to the Albert dock in the city

centre. The crews got the call at

0:04:170:04:21

about quarter to six this evening. A

number of vehicles were thought to

0:04:210:04:25

have been involved in an incident

which then spread around the

0:04:250:04:30

building. A major operation under

way, 12 fire engines have been sent

0:04:300:04:34

to the scene and more emergency

vehicles are arriving as we speak.

0:04:340:04:38

You can see the flames still

shooting out of the car park summer

0:04:380:04:42

four hours after the fire started.

The mayor is appealing for help for

0:04:420:04:47

accommodation and for transport to

try and help get people home. Many

0:04:470:04:51

people are unable to access their

vehicles this evening. The Liverpool

0:04:510:04:55

international horse show had been

taking place here. The horses were

0:04:550:04:58

led into the arena to keep them

safe, as their owners moved the

0:04:580:05:02

horse boxes which were parked on the

ground floor of the car park. Now, a

0:05:020:05:07

major investigation is under way and

the incident continues here tonight.

0:05:070:05:11

Steve, many thanks.

0:05:110:05:17

At least 36 people have been killed

in a head-on collision between a bus

0:05:170:05:20

and a truck on a notoriously

dangerous road in Kenya.

0:05:200:05:22

The bus was carrying people

to the capital, Nairobi,

0:05:220:05:25

when the accident happened

on the Nakuru-Eldoret

0:05:250:05:26

highway near Nakuru.

0:05:260:05:27

More than 100 people have died

in the last few weeks on that

0:05:270:05:30

stretch of road alone.

0:05:300:05:32

A seaplane has crashed

into a river near Sydney,

0:05:320:05:34

killing all six people on board.

0:05:340:05:38

Reports suggest four

of the victims are British,

0:05:380:05:39

although this has not been

confirmed by police.

0:05:390:05:43

The Foreign Office here is in

contact with officials in Australia.

0:05:430:05:45

The aircraft, on a sightseeing trip

in the run-up to the New Year

0:05:450:05:51

celebrations, came down in a river

close to the suburb of Cowan.

0:05:510:05:54

Phil Mercer reports from Sydney.

0:05:540:06:01

The seaplane crashed into Jerusalem

Bay near the town of Cowan.

0:06:010:06:04

On board were five

passengers and the pilot.

0:06:040:06:07

The single-engine aircraft

is thought to have sunk rapidly.

0:06:070:06:11

A witness said it had made a tight

right-hand turn and then nosedived

0:06:110:06:14

into the Hawkesbury River.

0:06:140:06:16

A full-scale search

was soon under way.

0:06:160:06:18

There were no survivors.

0:06:180:06:21

Police divers have found six bodies.

0:06:210:06:24

The wreckage of the plane remains

in more than 40ft of water.

0:06:240:06:28

The authorities say a full

investigation will take place.

0:06:280:06:33

I cannot confirm the identity

or ages of the people

0:06:330:06:35

who were on the plane.

0:06:350:06:36

We are...

0:06:360:06:40

It is early in the investigation,

and we are working with the plane

0:06:400:06:44

company, getting investigators

here to confirm the identities

0:06:440:06:48

and investigate why the plane

crashed into the water.

0:06:480:06:55

The seaplane was returning

from a waterfront restaurant

0:06:550:06:59

to Rose Bay on Sydney Harbour.

0:06:590:07:02

It's a journey that would normally

take around 20 minutes.

0:07:020:07:05

The aircraft is owned

by Sydney Seaplanes.

0:07:050:07:09

It provides flights around some

of the city's most popular

0:07:090:07:13

tourist attractions,

including the Opera House,

0:07:130:07:19

the Harbour Bridge, and to

the north, the Hawkesbury River.

0:07:190:07:21

The company said in a statement

that its pilots are some of the most

0:07:210:07:24

experienced in the world and that

all its flights had been suspended

0:07:240:07:27

until further notice.

0:07:270:07:29

Air-crash investigators will arrive

at the site of the accident

0:07:290:07:33

early on New Year's Day

to try to establish how and why

0:07:330:07:36

a routine sightseeing flight

could end in catastrophe.

0:07:360:07:38

Phil Mercer, BBC News, Sydney.

0:07:380:07:45

Thousands of rail travellers have

faced disrupted journeys today

0:07:450:07:48

as workers from two companies stage

a 24-hour strike.

0:07:480:07:50

Members of the RMT union

on South Western Railway

0:07:500:07:53

and CrossCountry are taking action

in disputes about the role

0:07:530:07:56

of guards, and working patterns.

0:07:560:08:03

New Year's celebrations have

begun around the world

0:08:030:08:05

as we welcome in 2018.

0:08:050:08:08

New Zealand was the first

to see fireworks before

0:08:080:08:11

Sydney Harbour was transformed

into a blaze of colour.

0:08:110:08:16

Richard Lister's report

contains flashing images.

0:08:160:08:26

Once again, Sydney set the standard

for new years fireworks. 1.5 million

0:08:290:08:37

people lined the harbour front for a

dazzling, deafening celebration. The

0:08:370:08:47

rainbow theme was a tribute to

Australia's legalisation of same-sex

0:08:470:08:50

marriage. Two hours earlier,

Auckland, New Zealand, was the first

0:08:500:08:58

major city to celebrate 2018. It's

Sky Tower lit up like a giant Roman

0:08:580:09:06

candle. That's the unmistakable

sound of North Korea joining the

0:09:060:09:14

celebrations which what else but a

display of rocket power. Perhaps the

0:09:140:09:22

most unusual display, though, didn't

involve fireworks at all. In Dubai

0:09:220:09:27

they lit up the world's tallest

building with lasers. The Burj

0:09:270:09:33

Khalifa became a shimmering campus,

visible up to 60 miles away. While

0:09:330:09:39

midnight swept around the world, New

York was gearing up for its

0:09:390:09:43

celebrations, one of several cities

with unprecedented security this

0:09:430:09:46

year. Parts of China have had a day

of festivities, even though they

0:09:460:09:51

will mark the New Year in February.

But Hong Kong may have out does old

0:09:510:09:57

Sydney. Fireworks exploded across

Victoria Harbour to a tune most of

0:09:570:10:04

us will be singing later.

0:10:040:10:08

Well, here, preparations

are underway around the country.

0:10:080:10:12

There will be big crowds

in London and Edinburgh.

0:10:120:10:21

Jonathan Blake is in London for us.

0:10:220:10:27

The countdown is well and truly on

for London's spectacular fireworks

0:10:270:10:31

display. The crowds here on the

Victoria Embankment and on the

0:10:310:10:38

bridges are building as the 100,000

people who have tickets for tonight

0:10:380:10:41

take their place in the viewing area

is. It's a huge event, and requires

0:10:410:10:46

a huge security operation. It is

tight, as you would imagine. The

0:10:460:10:50

Metropolitan Police say there is no

specific threat to the celebrations

0:10:500:10:54

tonight but they're asking people to

be vigil and, people have had bags

0:10:540:10:59

searched and they're asking people

to report anything they see as

0:10:590:11:02

suspicious. Armed officers are on

patrol and we are told undercover

0:11:020:11:06

officers are in the crowd. We are

told there will be 11 minutes and 15

0:11:060:11:10

seconds of fireworks. There will be

three barges on the river with 30

0:11:100:11:15

tonnes of equipment setting off

50,000 individual explosions, with a

0:11:150:11:17

the London Eye the centrepiece. The

soundtrack features female artists

0:11:170:11:22

to celebrate 2018 as the centenary

year of women being given the right

0:11:220:11:29

to vote. And it all kicks off as Big

Ben chimes midnight. London, not the

0:11:290:11:35

only city celebrating in style

tonight.

0:11:350:11:38

Andrew Black is in Edinburgh.

0:11:380:11:42

As you can see behind me, the party

has really kicked off now. This is

0:11:420:11:47

the main street in Edinburgh,

Princes Street, which has been

0:11:470:11:52

transformed for a street party

tonight. We're expecting around

0:11:520:11:56

60,000 people, and 150,000 people in

total coming to Edinburgh to see in

0:11:560:12:01

the New Year. Tonight will end with

a massive crescendo, a huge

0:12:010:12:06

fireworks display, which is set off

every year from the Edinburgh Castle

0:12:060:12:10

and battlements, and it has been

extended at in is going to be a

0:12:100:12:16

record ten minutes long. People have

been enjoying live music from the

0:12:160:12:21

likes of Rag'n'Bone Man and The

Human League as well. Also there is

0:12:210:12:24

the serious issue of security at big

public events like this. Pulleys

0:12:240:12:30

here have put extra resources out on

the streets, including armed

0:12:300:12:35

officers in, but as with the event

in London, there has not been any

0:12:350:12:39

specific threat, and at the moment

police have been trying to make sure

0:12:390:12:43

that people can enjoy themselves as

much as possible while keeping a

0:12:430:12:46

close eye on things. Some more good

news tonight, because this is

0:12:460:12:52

Scotland and the weather can

sometimes be fairly horrific in the

0:12:520:12:55

winter chill parts of the country

have been battered by Storm Dylan

0:12:550:12:59

over the last day or so, but

organisers were confident tonight

0:12:590:13:03

that things would go ahead as

planned, and they have indeed if the

0:13:030:13:07

weather is holding out, it's not too

bad here tonight. People are having

0:13:070:13:12

a really awesome time, and I think

that's probably going to continue

0:13:120:13:16

right until the final countdown to

midnight. Enjoy the party, both of

0:13:160:13:20

you!

0:13:200:13:25

Football, and Arsene Wenger reached

a new milestone by taking charge

0:13:250:13:29

of Arsenal for a record 811

Premier League matches -

0:13:290:13:31

as his club drew 1-1

with West Bromwich Albion.

0:13:310:13:34

And Manchester City's winning run

in the league has come

0:13:340:13:36

to a halt after 18 games.

0:13:360:13:37

They were held to a goalless

draw by Crystal Palace.

0:13:370:13:40

They still head into the New Year

with a 14-point lead

0:13:400:13:42

at the top of the table.

0:13:420:13:44

Adam Wild watched the action.

0:13:440:13:53

The message from fans was clear

enough. Still it is hard to imagine

0:13:530:13:57

just how things could get any better

for Manchester City. Never has a Tim

0:13:570:14:01

Paine so far ahead at the end of the

year. As for their potential, there

0:14:010:14:05

seems no end. But against Crystal

Palace this was a new Year lacking

0:14:050:14:09

celebration. Gabriel Jesus was

injured, leaving in tears. It was

0:14:090:14:14

his replacement Sergio Aguero who

went closest in the first half. But

0:14:140:14:17

this was not the brilliance from

City that all had come to fear.

0:14:170:14:22

Victory would have equalled the

European record, the target, then,

0:14:220:14:30

straightforward - hitting it

seemingly less so. But Palace had

0:14:300:14:32

chances of their own with which they

should have done better. And that

0:14:320:14:37

ultimately for them is how this will

be remembered. In the 90th minute

0:14:370:14:41

they were awarded a penalty, but

Luka Milivojevic was unable to

0:14:410:14:47

score. So, not quite the perfect end

to 2017 for either side. For both,

0:14:470:14:54

New Year's Eve, as is so often the

case, a bit of an anti-climax.

0:14:540:14:58

Elsewhere a big day on the calendar

of a rather different sort. At West

0:14:580:15:03

Brom, Arsene Wenger took charge of

Arsenal for the 811th Premier League

0:15:030:15:08

game, a new record. But there was

much work to be done before any

0:15:080:15:12

celebrations could start. His team

bade him wait, it wasn't until the

0:15:120:15:15

second half that they found a way

through, and even then it took a

0:15:150:15:19

little deflection. But with just

moments left, that was still far

0:15:190:15:24

from the end of it. Two minutes

remaining and West Brom were offered

0:15:240:15:28

a hand back into it. This was deemed

a penalty and Jay Rodriguez gladly

0:15:280:15:36

spoiled Arsene Wenger's special day.

Drama to the very end of the year.

0:15:360:15:45

You can see more on all of today's

stories on the BBC News Channel.

0:15:450:15:49

That's all from me.

0:15:490:15:53

I wish you a very happy New Year.

0:15:530:15:57

Good night.
