at least 12 protestors

place in the Premier League

0:00:500:00:59

Good evening.

0:01:140:01:15

In Iran, a police officer has been

shot dead, and three

0:01:150:01:18

others have been wounded,

after a fifth day of

0:01:180:01:20

anti-government protests.

0:01:200:01:21

What began as a protest

against the rising cost of living

0:01:210:01:24

now seems to be taking

on political overtones.

0:01:240:01:26

A dozen protesters have been killed

in the last 24 hours.

0:01:260:01:29

The foreign secretary,

Boris Johnson, has called

0:01:290:01:32

on the Iranian government to allow

meaningful debate on the issues

0:01:320:01:35

raised by protestors.

0:01:350:01:37

Our correspondent Rana Rahimpour,

from the BBC's Persian

0:01:370:01:39

Service, has the latest.

0:01:390:01:47

Once again, thousands of people have

taken to the streets.

0:01:470:01:57

A poster of the supreme leader set

alight and torn down before the

0:01:580:02:03

crowds rush over the wall of the

Town Hall in this city.

0:02:030:02:08

They are angry at unemployment,

rising prices, and what many think

0:02:080:02:11

is widespread corruption.

0:02:110:02:12

It's the boldest challenge

to the country's leadership

0:02:120:02:15

in nearly a decade.

0:02:150:02:18

The demonstrations began

in the north-western city

0:02:180:02:20

of Mashhad, a key base

for President Rouhani's

0:02:200:02:22

most outspoken critics.

0:02:220:02:32

But it has quickly

turned into a widespread

0:02:330:02:37

antiestablishment movement,

0:02:370:02:43

including the supreme leader.

0:02:430:02:45

This is the biggest show

of dissent in Iran since

0:02:450:02:47

the post-election rallies of 2009.

0:02:470:02:48

They were large in size,

but limited to urban areas

0:02:480:02:51

of the country, like

the capital, Tehran.

0:02:510:02:54

This time, the protests

are more widespread,

0:02:540:02:55

with towns and cities

0:02:550:02:56

all over the country looking

for social, political,

0:02:560:02:58

and economic change.

0:02:580:02:59

Authorities are continuing

to suspend social media platforms

0:02:590:03:01

out of fear they will be used

to organise more protests.

0:03:010:03:04

The BBC has received reports of text

messages, like this one,

0:03:040:03:06

being sent to people urging them not

to take part.

0:03:060:03:12

A handful of pro-government marchers

are attempting to counter

0:03:120:03:14

the wider demonstrations,

but with limited information coming

0:03:140:03:16

out of the country, it's

difficult to gauge how many

0:03:160:03:19

people are involved.

0:03:190:03:26

In the last 24 hours,

President Rouhani has spoken out

0:03:260:03:29

twice against the protests.

0:03:290:03:34

Downplaying their significance and

instead...

0:03:340:03:39

Accusing Iran's enemies

of instigating the unrest.

0:03:390:03:45

TRANSLATION:

Our victory against

the US and the zionist regime

0:03:450:03:48

is unbearable for our enemies.

0:03:480:03:49

Our success in the region

is intolerable for them.

0:03:490:03:51

They are after revenge

and are trying to provoke people.

0:03:510:03:53

But his words have failed

to calm the situation.

0:03:530:03:59

In certain areas of the country,

unemployment is as high as 60%,

0:03:590:04:03

and reports of extreme corruption

have Iranians frustrated

0:04:030:04:05

and hungry for change.

0:04:050:04:15

Tonight, Iranian state TV is

reporting that a police officer has

0:04:150:04:19

been shot dead. It is the first

reported attack on a member of the

0:04:190:04:23

security forces since the

demonstrations began last week, a

0:04:230:04:27

move that may escalate the

confrontation between protesters and

0:04:270:04:30

the State, and attention league lead

to more bloodshed.

0:04:300:04:37

Rana Rahimpour, BBC News.

0:04:370:04:38

Air accident investigators

in Australia say it may take months

0:04:380:04:42

before they know why a seaplane

carrying a prominent British

0:04:420:04:45

businessman and his family

crashed on New Year's Eve.

0:04:450:04:47

Richard Cousins, who ran

a multi-billion pound catering

0:04:470:04:49

company, was killed along

with his two sons, his fiancee,

0:04:490:04:51

her daughter and the pilot.

0:04:510:04:52

They were on holiday and returning

to Sydney after a family outing.

0:04:520:04:55

Phil Mercer reports from Sydney.

0:04:550:04:58

The wreckage of the seaplane lies 13

metres below the surface

0:04:580:05:00

of the Hawkesbury River.

0:05:000:05:03

One of the victims was the British

businessman Richard Cousins,

0:05:030:05:06

the chief executive of the world's

largest catering firm,

0:05:060:05:08

Compass, who was due

to retire later this year.

0:05:080:05:12

The company confirmed his

death in a statement.

0:05:120:05:17

Mr Cousins, who was 58, died

alongside his fiancee Emma Bowden

0:05:170:05:20

and her 11-year-old daughter,

Heather.

0:05:200:05:23

Also on board the seaplane that

crashed into Jerusalem Bay -

0:05:230:05:25

William Cousins, who was 25,

worked for Open Britain,

0:05:250:05:28

a pro-EU group set up

in the aftermath of the Brexit vote.

0:05:280:05:31

Colleagues said they were shocked

by news of his death.

0:05:310:05:33

His brother, Edward, who was 23,

had recently graduated

0:05:330:05:35

from the University of St Andrews.

0:05:350:05:37

Losing both my godson

and his sibling, and my

0:05:370:05:46

brother-in-law as well,

has left a huge hole.

0:05:470:05:50

They had a lot of friends.

0:05:500:05:53

They had...

0:05:530:05:56

They were very, very popular lads.

0:05:560:05:59

And that's because they've had

a fantastic upbringing,

0:05:590:06:01

from both my sister and Richard.

0:06:010:06:05

The pilot, Gareth Morgan, had done

more than 10,000 flying hours,

0:06:050:06:08

9,000 of which were on seaplanes.

0:06:080:06:14

The pilot had collected Mr Cousins

and members of his family

0:06:140:06:17

from an exclusive waterfront

restaurant, and was heading back

0:06:170:06:20

to Rose Bay on Sydney Harbour.

0:06:200:06:23

Shortly after take-off,

the plane plummeted into the water.

0:06:230:06:26

Investigators say it quickly sank,

and there were no survivors.

0:06:260:06:29

This is people that have come over

on holidays to visit Australia.

0:06:290:06:35

They were in one of the most

beautiful parts of the world.

0:06:350:06:39

And for this to happen to them

at a place like that is nothing

0:06:390:06:44

more than just tragic.

0:06:440:06:46

It could take months to work out how

and why a routine sightseeing trip

0:06:460:06:50

could end in utter disaster.

0:06:500:06:52

Air crash investigators

have begun their work.

0:06:520:06:54

Their task won't be easy.

0:06:540:06:57

The wreckage of the seaplane has

been submerged in more

0:06:570:06:59

than 40ft of water.

0:06:590:07:03

And although these idyllic bays

and inlets are geographically close

0:07:030:07:07

to Sydney, the crash site is tucked

away and hard to get to.

0:07:070:07:11

Sydney Seaplanes,

which owns the aircraft,

0:07:110:07:14

has suspended all its flights

until further notice.

0:07:140:07:16

Phil Mercer, BBC News, Sydney.

0:07:160:07:23

Four young men have been

stabbed to death in London

0:07:230:07:27

in a 24-hour period either side

of the New Year celebrations.

0:07:270:07:29

Three men, aged 17,18 and 20,

were killed yesterday.

0:07:290:07:33

Three men, aged 17, 18 and 20,

were killed yesterday.

0:07:330:07:36

A fourth victim, another

20-year-old, died after being

0:07:360:07:38

stabbed in the early hours

of this morning.

0:07:380:07:40

Police say the deaths are unrelated.

0:07:400:07:41

Ben Ando reports.

0:07:410:07:44

Late morning, Enfield, north London.

0:07:440:07:46

The victim, aged 18.

0:07:460:07:48

Early evening, West Ham,

the victim, 20 years old.

0:07:480:07:51

Three hours later, Tulse Hill,

south London, a teenager of 17.

0:07:510:07:55

And then in the early

hours of New Year's Day,

0:07:550:07:57

a 20-year-old man killed

in Old Street.

0:07:570:08:05

All four, stabbed to death,

but according to the police,

0:08:050:08:07

none of the murders are linked.

0:08:070:08:09

Tragically, there are four families

who awoke this morning

0:08:090:08:11

to the heartbreaking news that

they've lost loved ones

0:08:110:08:14

to the callous use of

knives as lethal weapons.

0:08:140:08:18

Our detectives are working

tirelessly today and going forward

0:08:180:08:24

to bring those who've committed

these murders to justice.

0:08:240:08:27

The three murders before midnight

take the total number of fatal

0:08:270:08:30

stabbings in London for 2017 to 80.

0:08:300:08:35

That compares with 60 in 2016.

0:08:350:08:36

Police say the reasons

for the increase are complex,

0:08:360:08:38

but it underlines the importance

of stop-and-search.

0:08:380:08:45

My mum needs me alive...

0:08:450:08:47

In November, a campaign to convince

teenagers not to carry

0:08:470:08:49

knives was launched.

0:08:490:08:51

London needs me alive...

0:08:510:08:53

One campaigner who lost a son

to knife crime says youngsters need

0:08:530:08:56

more help to make the right choice.

0:08:560:08:59

So, I don't carry a knife...

0:08:590:09:00

They are living in total fear.

0:09:000:09:05

They weren't born killers.

0:09:050:09:07

They didn't just become like that.

0:09:070:09:08

It's a process.

0:09:080:09:12

And now, what we've got to do

is unravel that process,

0:09:120:09:17

stage by stage by stage,

to get to the core of

0:09:170:09:21

the individual, which is the state

of their heart and the state

0:09:210:09:24

of their mindset.

0:09:240:09:27

As work goes on at the scene

of the first knife killing of 2018,

0:09:270:09:30

the question is, will this

worrying trend continue?

0:09:300:09:32

Ben Ando, BBC News, south London.

0:09:320:09:37

Police investigating the death

of a woman who was killed

0:09:370:09:41

in a North London park over

Christmas have arrested

0:09:410:09:43

a 31-year-old man on

suspicion of murder.

0:09:430:09:46

The body of Iuliana Tudos,

who was 22 and of Russian and Greek

0:09:460:09:49

origin, was discovered

in Finsbury Park last Wednesday.

0:09:490:09:53

Police say she died of a stab wound

to the abdomen and a head injury.

0:09:530:10:00

The leader of North Korea,

Kim Jong-Un, has warned

0:10:000:10:02

the United States that he has

a nuclear button on his desk,

0:10:020:10:05

ready for use, if his

country feels threatened.

0:10:050:10:07

In a televised New Year's Day

speech, he said that the whole

0:10:070:10:10

of the US was within range,

but he had warmer words

0:10:100:10:12

for neighbouring South Korea,

saying he wanted to ease tensions.

0:10:120:10:19

Eye witnesses have been describing

a huge fire which destroyed up

0:10:190:10:22

to 1,400 vehicles in a multi-storey

car park in Liverpool.

0:10:220:10:25

The blaze at King's Dock,

next to Liverpool's Echo Arena,

0:10:250:10:28

is said to have spread after one

vehicle caught fire

0:10:280:10:32

yesterday afternoon.

0:10:320:10:34

Firefighters worked

through the night and many people

0:10:340:10:37

were forced into temporary

accommodation as nearby

0:10:370:10:39

buildings were evacuated.

0:10:390:10:41

Danny Savage has the story.

0:10:410:10:46

It was shortly after dark yesterday

evening when fire took hold

0:10:460:10:50

on the multistorey car park

on Liverpool's famous waterfront.

0:10:500:10:55

The Fire Service says a small fire

in a Land Rover spread rapidly.

0:10:550:10:58

This is a photo taken

of it at the time.

0:10:580:11:01

As the blaze spread,

cars could be heard exploding.

0:11:010:11:07

The car park is next

to the Liverpool Arena,

0:11:070:11:10

where an international horse

show was taking place.

0:11:100:11:14

Those attending helped get

the horses to safety.

0:11:140:11:18

I just took it upon myself.

0:11:180:11:20

I said, right, OK, everyone,

listen to me, we are going to bridle

0:11:200:11:26

up the horses and we're

going to get them out.

0:11:260:11:28

I want you to all leave calmly now,

use this exit or use the tunnel.

0:11:280:11:32

It was soon a huge blaze.

0:11:320:11:36

Merseyside Fire and Rescue say

it's one of the worst

0:11:360:11:39

they've ever dealt with.

0:11:390:11:40

This was a challenging incident.

0:11:400:11:41

Let's be under no

illusions about that.

0:11:410:11:44

The crews worked very hard indeed

to prevent the spread of this fire.

0:11:440:11:48

The fire burned for

much of the night.

0:11:480:11:52

All the car owners could do

was watch and accept they would

0:11:520:11:55

never see their vehicles again.

0:11:550:11:58

I've got a vehicle in there, yeah,

so I'm unsure at the moment

0:11:580:12:01

what it's going to be.

0:12:010:12:02

We can't get anywhere near it.

0:12:020:12:04

Are you holding out

much hope for your car?

0:12:040:12:06

Looking at the flames, no.

0:12:060:12:07

CHUCKLES

0:12:070:12:09

This morning the blackened building

was surrounded by fire engines.

0:12:090:12:13

It's likely it will have

to be demolished.

0:12:130:12:20

In the remains of this

multistorey car park are many

0:12:200:12:23

hundreds of cars which have

been totally destroyed.

0:12:230:12:25

But we understand that right

on the rooftop level are some cars

0:12:250:12:28

which are almost untouched.

0:12:280:12:29

And after the fire had been put out

this morning, after many hours,

0:12:290:12:36

some dogs, which had been left

in those cars, were safely rescued

0:12:360:12:38

and reunited with their owners.

0:12:380:12:42

As the dogs were handed back

to their owners, there was a hug

0:12:420:12:45

of gratitude for the firefighters.

0:12:450:12:47

The insurance bill will run

to millions of pounds

0:12:470:12:49

but thankfully no one was hurt.

0:12:490:12:50

Danny Savage, BBC News, Liverpool.

0:12:500:12:55

Football - and in today's

Premier League action,

0:12:550:12:57

Brighton and Bournemouth drew,

there were wins for Liverpool,

0:12:570:12:59

Leicester and Newcastle.

0:12:590:13:01

And, at Goodison Park,

Manchester United beat Everton 2-0

0:13:010:13:04

to go second in the table.

0:13:040:13:05

David Ornstein watched the game.

0:13:050:13:08

A new year and two sides

in need of fresh impetus.

0:13:080:13:12

The sort Wayne Rooney gave

Manchester United for so long

0:13:120:13:15

and which Everton want from him now.

0:13:150:13:20

But here, it was Rooney's former

team who stole the show.

0:13:200:13:23

After a dour first half,

United sprung into life.

0:13:230:13:25

Everton had been warned.

0:13:250:13:27

Soon they were punished.

0:13:270:13:30

Paul Pogba and Anthony Martial

combining for a goal

0:13:300:13:33

of the very highest order.

0:13:330:13:38

For a period, the home manager saw

more of the ball than his players.

0:13:380:13:41

They did summon a response,

though it could not be converted.

0:13:410:13:44

And that opened the door

for United to close the game.

0:13:440:13:46

An opportunity they

wouldn't let slip.

0:13:460:13:48

Jesse Lingard's weaving run capped

with a spectacular finish.

0:13:480:13:54

The celebration indicated

the importance of this result.

0:13:540:13:56

Goodison silenced,

United back on track.

0:13:560:13:58

David Ornstein, BBC News.

0:13:580:14:05

Now, if you've been bagging up

all that excess plastic packaging

0:14:050:14:07

from your Christmas presents,

have you thought where it ends up?

0:14:070:14:10

Each year, a quarter

of our plastic waste

0:14:100:14:13

is shipped to China -

that's hundreds of

0:14:130:14:15

thousands of tonnes.

0:14:150:14:19

But, from today, China will not

allow the import of what it calls

0:14:190:14:22

"hazardous foreign waste".

0:14:220:14:23

That's likely to have

a big impact here.

0:14:230:14:26

In the first of a series of reports

on how we deal with plastic waste,

0:14:260:14:30

Robin Brant reports from Shanghai.

0:14:300:14:34

China has been

recycling for decades.

0:14:340:14:39

He has made a living out of bashing,

breaking up and disassembling.

0:14:390:14:45

He's been doing it for five years.

0:14:450:14:46

It's hard work, he tells me.

0:14:460:14:48

Tiring.

0:14:480:14:50

But he's not a green warrior.

0:14:500:14:51

He does it because

there's money in it.

0:14:510:14:55

China needs the raw materials.

0:14:550:14:59

So much so that Chinese workers have

0:14:590:15:01

been sorting through your waste

shipped in from abroad.

0:15:010:15:05

But the government is stopping that.

0:15:050:15:11

New environmental protection has

made the business difficult, he

0:15:110:15:14

says.

0:15:140:15:17

China has long been the destination

of much of the world's waste.

0:15:170:15:24

It has imported 7.3 million tonnes

of plastic alone in 2016.

0:15:240:15:31

The UK sent 1200 tonnes

of it to China every day.

0:15:310:15:35

But most of that is

ending, and here is why.

0:15:350:15:40

China has become a much richer,

but much dirtier country.

0:15:400:15:43

It's blighted now by

home-made pollution

0:15:430:15:45

and contamination on a vast scale.

0:15:450:15:51

The government claims some foreign

waste is dangerous and the last

0:15:510:15:54

thing this country needs is even

more of that.

TRANSLATION:

China is putting

the onus back on all of the

0:16:000:16:03

waste-exporting countries.

0:16:030:16:05

You need to show the responsibility

of disposing your own waste

0:16:050:16:07

and your own sources of pollution.

0:16:070:16:10

The ban presents a problem

for China, though, because it

0:16:100:16:16

still needs the cardboard,

the paper, the high-end clean

0:16:160:16:19

polystyrene like this

which is easy to ship here,

0:16:190:16:22

easy to turn into something to sell,

and sometimes selling it back

0:16:220:16:25

to the country it came from.

0:16:250:16:26

Somewhere in there are

polystyrene fish boxes

0:16:260:16:29

from Grimsby.

0:16:290:16:32

This business on the outskirts

of Shanghai ships them,

0:16:320:16:36

chips them, heats them,

and turns them into this -

0:16:360:16:40

billions of tiny plastic pellets.

0:16:400:16:44

Because it recycles them

into skirting boards

0:16:440:16:45

and picture frames -

0:16:450:16:46

some of them heading your way.

0:16:460:16:54

But China's ban means the boss will

now have a problem with his supply.

0:16:540:17:00

Some people in China are very angry

about importing recycled

0:17:000:17:03

plastic.

0:17:030:17:04

Just keeping the factory running,

we need about 50,000 tonnes

0:17:040:17:06

of recycled plastics.

0:17:060:17:12

When you only recycle

0:17:120:17:13

China is not enough.

0:17:130:17:14

The tough new restrictions

on foreign waste will hurt

0:17:140:17:17

some business here,

but the government's

0:17:170:17:20

view is - tough.

0:17:200:17:22

Delivering a cleaner

China is paramount for

0:17:220:17:24

the Communist party politicians.

0:17:240:17:26

A green revolution,

you might call it.

0:17:260:17:29

Robin Brant, BBC News, Shanghai.

0:17:290:17:33

It's called the Loony Dook -

when more than a thousand people

0:17:330:17:36

who've paid for the privilege dive

into the freezing waters

0:17:360:17:39

of the Firth of Forth to celebrate

New Year's Day.

0:17:390:17:41

Many of the revellers

at South Queensferry wore fancy

0:17:410:17:45

dress, while others stuck to more

traditional swimwear.

0:17:450:17:49

The annual fundraising event

has been taking place

0:17:490:17:50

for more than 30 years.

0:17:500:17:52

The participants were rewarded

with a bowl of porridge

0:17:520:17:54

for taking the plunge.
