It has been revealed that 35 migrants discovered in the shipping | :00:08. | :00:14.
container in Essex are Sikhs from Afghanistan. Video footage shows the | :00:15. | :00:18.
moment they were released after 12 hours in the dark. Many of them, | :00:19. | :00:22.
women and children. There have been more US air strikes | :00:23. | :00:26.
on Islamic State extremists in northern Iraq. Now David Cameron | :00:27. | :00:32.
says Britain's military prowess may be needed if they are to be | :00:33. | :00:36.
defeated. A man has been shot and is | :00:37. | :00:41.
critically injured after more clashes in the US state of Missouri. | :00:42. | :00:46.
And England thrash India in the fifth and final Test - to complete a | :00:47. | :00:50.
3-1 series victory. A very good evening to you. Police | :00:51. | :01:11.
say they believe 35 migrants found locked in a shipping container at | :01:12. | :01:16.
Tilbury Docks in Essex came from Afghanistan and are of the Sikh | :01:17. | :01:21.
faith. One man died and some of the others, including children, needed | :01:22. | :01:24.
hospital treatment after being discovered yesterday morning. New | :01:25. | :01:27.
video footage shows the moment they emerged from the container. They are | :01:28. | :01:31.
thought to be the victims of trafficking. | :01:32. | :01:34.
Our correspondent is at Tilbury Docks for us now. Andy? | :01:35. | :01:39.
Throughout the day, police have been talking to the 30 migrants who are | :01:40. | :01:42.
well enough to be interviewed. It will be a long and difficult | :01:43. | :01:47.
process. Interpreters are needed and police are well aware these people | :01:48. | :01:50.
have been through a traumatic experience. I should warn you about | :01:51. | :01:57.
flashing images in this report. All day long members of the local Sikh | :01:58. | :02:01.
community have come to the port terminal where the group is being | :02:02. | :02:05.
interviewed. They have brought food, clothes and soft toys for the | :02:06. | :02:08.
children. We know there are at least seven. Medical staff have been in | :02:09. | :02:12.
attendance. The moment when the container was opened up yesterday | :02:13. | :02:17.
morning and its cargo of terrified men, women and children spilt out | :02:18. | :02:21.
into the open air. They had been inside for at least 12 hours. Police | :02:22. | :02:26.
officers and border staff do their best to help. Some of the migrants | :02:27. | :02:32.
are quite clearly injured. Others are traumatised and cold. | :02:33. | :02:36.
The emergency services warm them up in whatever way they can. Police say | :02:37. | :02:42.
the people being interviewed here have suffered a terrible ordeal. | :02:43. | :02:45.
They say they are the victims of human trafficking. Their main | :02:46. | :02:49.
concern at the moment is for their health and welfare. Human | :02:50. | :02:53.
trafficking across Europe is an insidious and lucrative business. . | :02:54. | :02:57.
This particular group, I understand they are from Afghanistan. They | :02:58. | :03:00.
probably would have been transported overland from Afghanistan, up to one | :03:01. | :03:04.
of the borders in the Balkans and possibly into the European Union | :03:05. | :03:06.
that way. And then they would have paid for | :03:07. | :03:12.
on-ward passenger up to wherever they were picked up and headed for | :03:13. | :03:15.
the UK. There were fears at one stage there may be another container | :03:16. | :03:19.
with more people on board, but that has been ruled out. Police across | :03:20. | :03:23.
Europe are now doing their utmost to find the traffickers who put this | :03:24. | :03:26.
group of migrants through an ordeal they were lucky to survive. | :03:27. | :03:33.
David Cameron says Britain's military prowess will be needed to | :03:34. | :03:40.
defeat the jihadist group Islamic State in Iraq. Writing in the Sunday | :03:41. | :03:44.
Telegraph, the Prime Minister said, a human response to the crisis there | :03:45. | :03:48.
is not enough. He also warned militants could target Britain. Our | :03:49. | :03:52.
political correspondent has the story. | :03:53. | :03:59.
Islamic State militants striking a triumphant pose and despite recent | :04:00. | :04:02.
attacks on their positions, the Prime Minister says they represent a | :04:03. | :04:06.
significant threat. Controlling thousands of Square Miles of | :04:07. | :04:09.
territories spanning the border between northern Iraq and Syria. In | :04:10. | :04:15.
a newspaper article, he declares: We need a firm security response, | :04:16. | :04:19.
whether it is military action to go after the terrorists, or | :04:20. | :04:22.
uncompromising action against terrorists at home. | :04:23. | :04:27.
UK forces have within delivering aid to northern Iraq and an offer to | :04:28. | :04:31.
provide Kurdish forces with equipment. For all the talk of | :04:32. | :04:33.
military activity, the Prime Minister is making it clear there'll | :04:34. | :04:37.
be no invading forces, no new Iraq war. The Prime Minister's rhetoric | :04:38. | :04:41.
is powerful. That doesn't mean it will be followed by swift action. | :04:42. | :04:47.
Instead, he is preparing us for a protracted struggle against Islamic | :04:48. | :04:51.
extremism. One he says could last his whole political lifetime. He's | :04:52. | :04:55.
been very clear, there's a home front in this battle too. | :04:56. | :05:03.
I am... It is estimated as many as 500 British citizens are fighting | :05:04. | :05:06.
alongside militants in Iraq. The Prime Minister says any show of | :05:07. | :05:11.
support here in the UK, even displaying an Islamic State flag, | :05:12. | :05:15.
could lead to arrest. Some critics say this will be count | :05:16. | :05:18.
counterproductive. For now, he has the opposition's backing. He'll have | :05:19. | :05:23.
my full support in working the law enforcement agencies w the police, | :05:24. | :05:25.
with intelligence agencies to make sure that as best we possibly can, | :05:26. | :05:30.
British agencies are tracking and assessing the nature of any threat | :05:31. | :05:37.
to UK citizens. There has been criticism from leading figures in | :05:38. | :05:39.
the Church of England. They are concerned the Government doesn't | :05:40. | :05:44.
have a coherent strategy for trackling extremism. They say as a | :05:45. | :05:49.
last resort Britain should offer asylum to those fleeing the | :05:50. | :05:53.
conflict. We have a moral of obligation, given how we were | :05:54. | :05:58.
involved in the war in Iraq a decade ago. Much of the mess is partly our | :05:59. | :06:03.
doing. The Iraq war casts a long political shadow. The Prime Minister | :06:04. | :06:07.
insists it won't stop him taking action to tackle extremism now. | :06:08. | :06:14.
Well, in Iraq, Kurdish fighters say they have retaken large parts of a | :06:15. | :06:21.
dam near Mosul. Captured by Islamic State extremisms. US planes and | :06:22. | :06:24.
drones were involved in the operation. Humanitarian efforts are | :06:25. | :06:28.
continuing, to help tens of thousands of people from the Yazidi | :06:29. | :06:33.
minority, who have been forced from their homes by extremists. Our | :06:34. | :06:41.
correspondent sent us this report. A whole people put to flight by the | :06:42. | :06:48.
Islamic State. Exhausted, terrified - the Yazidis | :06:49. | :06:52.
suffered many individual tragedies, as they fled in their thousands. At | :06:53. | :06:58.
a hospital in Syria, we learned of one of the most heartbreaking | :06:59. | :07:02.
stories. The little boy is disabled, | :07:03. | :07:07.
paralysed down one side. He was found by Kurdish fighters, | :07:08. | :07:12.
abandoned and dying in the desert. Doctors think he lay in 50 degrees | :07:13. | :07:16.
heat, looking into the blazing sun for more than a day. His eyes dried | :07:17. | :07:24.
out. The cornea is scorched and infected. No-one knows his name or | :07:25. | :07:28.
where his parents are and no-one knows why he was left behind. Other | :07:29. | :07:32.
refugees believe his mother no longer had the strength to carry him | :07:33. | :07:37.
and had to make the awful choice - which child to safe. | :07:38. | :07:42.
Islamic State gunmen started to shoot at people, says one refugee, | :07:43. | :07:46.
giving me the commonly accepted version of events. The boy's mother | :07:47. | :07:51.
panicked, she dropped him and just ran, so he was left behind. | :07:52. | :07:57.
Over the border, in Iraq, American warplanes and drones carried out 14 | :07:58. | :08:00.
air strikes. This was to help ease the | :08:01. | :08:05.
humanitarian crisis, said a US military spokesman and also to help | :08:06. | :08:11.
the Kurdish ground forces. A Kurdish offensive is reported to | :08:12. | :08:17.
have captured large parts of the Mosul dam today. It has been in the | :08:18. | :08:21.
hands of the Islamic State for the past fortnight. This is a difficult | :08:22. | :08:25.
fight, say the Kurds. We are not talking here about a | :08:26. | :08:29.
bunch of amateur jihadists, who want to go to heaven. They have an | :08:30. | :08:37.
agenda. They have an army, an army. They have money, finances, they have | :08:38. | :08:40.
oil. They are controlling water resources. They are controlling the | :08:41. | :08:47.
territory of two countries - Syria and Iraq. There are refugee camps | :08:48. | :08:52.
spread across the whole region. Syria, Turkey, Lebanon and here in | :08:53. | :08:56.
Iraq. Some of the camps like this one are starting to get an air of | :08:57. | :09:00.
permanence about them. These people, Syrian Kurds, fled to | :09:01. | :09:05.
Iraq two-and-a-half years ago. The jihadis were not powerful then, but | :09:06. | :09:09.
they used the chaos of Syria's sift war to become stronger and stronger. | :09:10. | :09:13.
Now they are using the fighting in Iraq to try and carve out their own | :09:14. | :09:18.
Islamic caliphate - their own state, that they hope will make the borders | :09:19. | :09:23.
between Iraq and Syria simply irrelevant. The jihadis are reported | :09:24. | :09:29.
to be gaining more territory in northern Syria. For these and other | :09:30. | :09:33.
refugees it may be a long wait before they can go home. | :09:34. | :09:39.
A man has been shot and critically injured in more violence prompted by | :09:40. | :09:46.
the killing of an unarmed black teenager in Missouri. It happened on | :09:47. | :09:52.
the first night of the curfew, in Ferguson, in St Louis. These images | :09:53. | :09:57.
are shocking many Americans. For some, it was a police force behaving | :09:58. | :10:02.
like an invading army, in a small town in Missouri. | :10:03. | :10:08.
Demonstrators were on the street, defying a curfew, calling not only | :10:09. | :10:14.
for justice, but an end to police heavy-handedness. | :10:15. | :10:22.
Police said they wouldn't fire tear gas, but as the night progressed, | :10:23. | :10:28.
that is just what they did. In the chaos, there were shots fired | :10:29. | :10:32.
and several people were arrested. Police say their response was | :10:33. | :10:39.
proportionate. We have a victim who may lose a life. We had a subject in | :10:40. | :10:44.
the middle of the road, with a handgun. We had a police car shot at | :10:45. | :10:49.
tonight and yes, I think that was a proper response tonight. | :10:50. | :10:54.
To maintain officers' safety and public safety. There's been a week | :10:55. | :10:58.
of unrest since Michael Brown was shot dead by police. He was 18 and | :10:59. | :11:01.
unarmed. Two days ago, just as tensions | :11:02. | :11:08.
seemed to be lifting, police released CCTV footage which they say | :11:09. | :11:14.
shows him acting aggressively and stealing cigars. They admit the | :11:15. | :11:20.
officer who shot him multiple times had not known he was a robbery | :11:21. | :11:24.
suspect. There have been calls from the police for the police -- from | :11:25. | :11:29.
the President for the police here to act more responsibly. The community | :11:30. | :11:34.
here feels nor antagonised and they are preparing for more confrontation | :11:35. | :11:36.
tonight. Scotland's First Minister, Alex | :11:37. | :11:42.
Salmond, has admitted he could have made his position on the future | :11:43. | :11:47.
currency on an independent Scotland clearer during his recent TV debate. | :11:48. | :11:52.
He said he wished he had explained that in more detail. He was pressed | :11:53. | :11:57.
on the issue by Alistair Darling of the Better Together campaign. The | :11:58. | :12:04.
next televised debate will be a week tomorrow. The Foreign Ministers of | :12:05. | :12:09.
Ukraine, Russia, France and Germany have begun a meeting in Berlin to | :12:10. | :12:12.
try and find ways of easing the situation in Ukraine. Today, trucks | :12:13. | :12:17.
from a Russian convoy, sent by Moscow, to contain humanitarian aid, | :12:18. | :12:21.
reached a border crossing, but were deemed not to have the necessary | :12:22. | :12:24.
paperwork to be allowed through. Ukraine says the convoy is in fact a | :12:25. | :12:28.
cover to smuggle in military supplies. | :12:29. | :12:33.
In sport, England have beaten India by a hefty innings and 244 runs in | :12:34. | :12:38.
the fifth and final Test to win the series 3-1. It completes a | :12:39. | :12:42.
remarkable turn around for England's cricketers after a dismalstart to | :12:43. | :12:46.
the summer. Joe of Wilson has all the details. | :12:47. | :12:51.
Sunday at the Oval, the final verdict about to be delivered to | :12:52. | :12:56.
India. England hit the ball around for an hour or so. Joe Root not out. | :12:57. | :13:04.
India 338 behind. Murali Vijay out to James Anderson. We were not at | :13:05. | :13:08.
lunch yet. Gautam Gambhir was desperate to get | :13:09. | :13:11.
away from Anderson. The umpire thought it was close. It was out. It | :13:12. | :13:19.
was 9-2. So, who wanted the wickets? Broad got Rahane. Only Dhoni stood | :13:20. | :13:23.
up for India recently. This time he was gone for none. Four wickets for | :13:24. | :13:30.
Jordan. When he got rid of Kohli it was 66. It England made this look so | :13:31. | :13:36.
simple it is easy to forget where they were three weeks ago - behind | :13:37. | :13:41.
in the series, without a win any where for almost a year. There'll be | :13:42. | :13:46.
sterner tests to come next summer. Right now, they have earnt the right | :13:47. | :13:52.
to feel good about themselves. Great Britain and Northern Ireland | :13:53. | :13:56.
have enjoyed their best European athletics championships ever. | :13:57. | :14:01.
Winning 12 gold. Mo Farah cruised to victory this in the 5,000 metres to | :14:02. | :14:11.
claim his second gold in Zurich. And Greg Rutherford added the European | :14:12. | :14:16.
gold to his Olympic and Commonwealth long jump titles. | :14:17. | :14:21.
In football, Liverpool have begun their campaign with a 2-1 win at | :14:22. | :14:27.
home to Southampton. Manchester City beat Newcastle 2-0. Goals from David | :14:28. | :14:32.
Silva and this late finish from Sergio Aguero sealed all the points. | :14:33. | :14:38.
There's more throughout the evening on the BBC News Channel and I will | :14:39. | :14:44.
be back with the late news at | :14:45. | :14:45. |
