years have been released in an effort to defuse

:00:22.:00:28.

They show the Prime Minister had a taxable income of more

:00:29.:00:32.

than ?200,000 last year and paid over ?70,000 in tax.

:00:33.:00:39.

But questions are now being asked about a ?200,000 gift

:00:40.:00:42.

from Mr Cameron's mother following his father's death.

:00:43.:00:44.

Our Political Correspondent Tom Bateman reports.

:00:45.:00:48.

It has been, by his own admission, not a great week

:00:49.:00:51.

Questions about his financial affairs led to five separate

:00:52.:01:01.

statements from him or his officials over several days.

:01:02.:01:03.

And then last night a first in British politics,

:01:04.:01:05.

the Prime Minister published details of his income and his tax payments.

:01:06.:01:09.

The protesters had wanted information about David Cameron's

:01:10.:01:12.

finances, so what do the accounts tell us?

:01:13.:01:14.

Last year, his income was just over ?200,000.

:01:15.:01:20.

140,000 of that was his salary as Prime Minister.

:01:21.:01:24.

He made nearly ?47,000 renting out his London home.

:01:25.:01:26.

A further ?12,800 were declared as expenses.

:01:27.:01:32.

Much of the focus has been on the money David Cameron

:01:33.:01:36.

received after the death of his father six years ago.

:01:37.:01:39.

We already knew he received ?300,000 from his will,

:01:40.:01:42.

but we now know he got a further ?200,000 from his mother in two

:01:43.:01:45.

Downing Street denied suggestions this was done to minimise

:01:46.:01:51.

Instead it was to share the inheritance more fairly

:01:52.:01:56.

The Prime Minister has now taken the unprecedented step of more

:01:57.:02:08.

disclosure. I think the people who definitely need to do this are the

:02:09.:02:12.

Prime Minister and the Leader of the Opposition. I know Jeremy Corbyn

:02:13.:02:15.

says he will do it but I don't think he has done it yet. Labour accept it

:02:16.:02:19.

the money gifted to Mr Cameron by his mother was within the rules but

:02:20.:02:23.

they claim it highlights a wider problem. This is about the system,

:02:24.:02:27.

and a system whereby somebody can effectively inherit ?500,000 from

:02:28.:02:32.

his mother and father and not pay a penny on it, there is something

:02:33.:02:36.

wrong in the system that allows that to happen. Downing Street has shone

:02:37.:02:40.

a light on David Cameron's finances, hoping the message will be received

:02:41.:02:44.

that there is nothing to see here. But Labour want the Prime Minister

:02:45.:02:48.

to make a statement in Parliament when MPs return this week. For now,

:02:49.:02:52.

difficult questions and headlines will not go away. Tom Bateman, BBC

:02:53.:02:53.

News. With me now is our Political

:02:54.:02:55.

Correspondent Carole Walker. He's hoping this row

:02:56.:02:57.

will now go away - will it? Indeed, but I think what Downing

:02:58.:03:04.

Street are hoping is that by putting out all this information I can start

:03:05.:03:07.

to get on the front foot as Parliament returns tomorrow. Labour

:03:08.:03:12.

are still pushing for more details. They say that we haven't got the

:03:13.:03:17.

full tax returns, we don't know the source of the ?200,000 gift from

:03:18.:03:22.

David Cameron's mother. We need a much wider enquiry into Whaley

:03:23.:03:26.

International tax havens work and so on. That'll be argued over the

:03:27.:03:32.

coming weeks and months. It's cleared the move has opened up the

:03:33.:03:39.

efforts to make the whole system more transparent. Jeremy Corbyn this

:03:40.:03:43.

morning even suggested that all politicians and indeed journalists

:03:44.:03:47.

who interview them, should publish their own tax returns. That might

:03:48.:03:51.

not happen overnight, but I think there will now be pressure for much

:03:52.:03:57.

wider reform to include a lot more transparency right across our tax

:03:58.:03:58.

and political system. More than a hundred people have been

:03:59.:04:01.

killed by an explosion and blaze at a temple in Southern

India. The blast in Paravur

:04:06.:04:07.

:04:52.:04:54.

so the temple authorities reached a compromise and

:04:55.:04:56.

decided to go ahead. Throughout the night,

:04:57.:04:59.

a fleet of ambulances ferried hundreds of injured

in the Observer, says the planned walkout in England -

in a dispute about a new contract - will put significant

said junior doctors' concerns had been ignored,
