In the past hour, the Republican Presidential nominee Donald Trump

:00:22.:00:27.

has said he won't quit the race for the White House

:00:28.:00:29.

despite the furore over his lewd comments about women.

:00:30.:00:34.

In a tape from 11 years ago, he's heard bragging about using his

:00:35.:00:37.

celebrity status to grope women - comments which have attracted

:00:38.:00:40.

widespread condemnation from his own party.

:00:41.:00:43.

He's apologised, but insists he'll fight on.

:00:44.:00:45.

Here's our North America editor Jon Sopel.

:00:46.:00:55.

2005, and Donald Trump is on a promotional bus tour of the TV show.

:00:56.:01:00.

His lewd conversation, captured on a live microphone.

:01:01.:01:40.

Social media went into meltdown. The Republican leadership variously

:01:41.:01:46.

describing his comment is sickening, repugnant and abhorrent. Hours last

:01:47.:01:50.

night, Donald Trump was totally isolated. And then this: I never

:01:51.:01:57.

said I was a perfect person, nor pretended to be someone I am not. I

:01:58.:02:00.

have said and done things I regret, and the words that are released

:02:01.:02:06.

today on this more than a decade old video one of them. Anybody who knows

:02:07.:02:09.

me knows these words do not reflect who I am. I said it. I was wrong.

:02:10.:02:18.

And I apologise. But very quickly, contrition turned to defiance. Bill

:02:19.:02:24.

Clinton has abused women, and Hillary Clinton has abused, attacked

:02:25.:02:28.

and ashamed his victims. We will talk more about this in the coming

:02:29.:02:32.

days. See you at the debate on Sunday. But that threat to fight

:02:33.:02:37.

dirty is not what a lot of Republican senators and congressmen

:02:38.:02:40.

want to hear. They are now fearful about their own political survival

:02:41.:02:44.

and worry that Donald Trump will cost them their careers. Some are

:02:45.:02:47.

getting ready to abandon him. Others cross that line last night. It is

:02:48.:02:52.

sad, but I can't endorse Donald Trump for president after those

:02:53.:02:57.

comments and the way he said. There is no way I am voting for Hillary

:02:58.:03:01.

Clinton, but I can no longer endorse Donald Trump for president, I can't

:03:02.:03:06.

do it. Donald Trump will take to the stage tomorrow for the second

:03:07.:03:09.

presidential debate, his presidential ambitions seriously

:03:10.:03:12.

damaged, and a Republican party deeply uneasy.

:03:13.:03:15.

Jon, could Donald Trump be forced to stand down?

:03:16.:03:18.

I think if there was an easy way for the Republican party to dump trump,

:03:19.:03:27.

there are many in the party would love that option, but it is more

:03:28.:03:32.

complicated than that. We have already had more people coming out

:03:33.:03:36.

today saying that he should go, the New Hampshire senator said that and

:03:37.:03:40.

others as well. But people have already started voting in several

:03:41.:03:46.

states. Barack Obama cast his vote yesterday, and Donald Trump has said

:03:47.:03:49.

there is zero chance he is quitting. That said, Donald Trump said in that

:03:50.:03:54.

clip that we have just played anybody who knows me knows that is

:03:55.:03:58.

not who I am, in reference to the remarks he made. A lot of

:03:59.:04:02.

Republicans are hoping there are no more tapes, no more women, who are

:04:03.:04:06.

going to contradict that. Jon, thank you.

:04:07.:04:12.

German police have arrested three people in connection

:04:13.:04:14.

with their search for a Syrian-born man suspected of

:04:15.:04:16.

A raid of an apartment in the eastern city of Chemnitz,

:04:17.:04:20.

where the suspect was thought to be hiding, led to the discovery

:04:21.:04:22.

of what they call "highly explosive materials".

:04:23.:04:25.

Our Europe correspondent Damian Grammaticas reports.

:04:26.:04:30.

This is the man being hunted by German police, Jaber Albakr.

:04:31.:04:32.

He is 22 years old, from Damascus in Syria.

:04:33.:04:34.

Germany's security services say they have to assume he's dangerous.

:04:35.:04:39.

They believe he may have been planning a bomb attack.

:04:40.:04:42.

It was a tip-off from Germany's intelligence services that

:04:43.:04:47.

They raided the apartment in Chemnitz, and found

:04:48.:04:52.

Jaber Albakr had already gone, but hidden inside the property,

:04:53.:04:56.

they uncovered explosives, possibly evidence of a bomb being prepared.

:04:57.:05:00.

TRANSLATION: At this time, we are busy with final measures

:05:01.:05:05.

here, and we will continue our searches, but our main focus

:05:06.:05:07.

now is on the manhunt for the perpetrator,

:05:08.:05:09.

German police say the explosives are dangerous, and will probably

:05:10.:05:15.

have to be destroyed where they are, so they have been

:05:16.:05:17.

And they say Jaber Albakr was known to the police.

:05:18.:05:30.

Soon after, three arrests were made nearby, not

:05:31.:05:33.

They have all been taken into custody while police

:05:34.:05:37.

And of course this all comes at a time when the issue of refugees and

:05:38.:05:48.

security in Germany is upmost in peoples minds. There were attacks

:05:49.:05:52.

back in July which caused serious injuries, one on a rock concert, one

:05:53.:05:57.

on a train, both by refugees. In this instance, police say they found

:05:58.:06:02.

highly explosive material which was extremely dangerous and unstable.

:06:03.:06:05.

One thing they have not clarified his when this man, Jaber Albakr,

:06:06.:06:13.

arrived in Germany. Was he a recent arrival among a recent wave of

:06:14.:06:17.

refugees, has he been never longer? German media are reporting he was a

:06:18.:06:21.

recent arrival, but they haven't clarified that point while they

:06:22.:06:23.

continue to search for him. David, thank you.

:06:24.:06:28.

More than 900 people are now believed to have been killed

:06:29.:06:31.

by Hurricane Matthew in Haiti, and officials warn the death toll

:06:32.:06:33.

could rise further as rescue teams reach cut-off areas.

:06:34.:06:36.

The hurricane has now weakened to a Category One storm as it

:06:37.:06:38.

continues to make its way along the south-eastern coast of the US

:06:39.:06:41.

This is Jeremie, a town of 30,000 people torn apart

:06:42.:06:50.

It has been cut off from the rest of the country for several days.

:06:51.:06:55.

Only now is aid beginning to arrive by air.

:06:56.:06:57.

The closer we got to Jeremie, the further from Port-au-Prince,

:06:58.:06:59.

Anything that was not concrete was flattened.

:07:00.:07:08.

The palm trees were bent over in half or completely

:07:09.:07:10.

There were several little fishing villages that just looked desolate.

:07:11.:07:15.

People are doing their best to rebuild their homes

:07:16.:07:17.

But Haiti is one of the poorest countries in the world, and people

:07:18.:07:23.

are not expecting much help from their government.

:07:24.:07:25.

Around a million people are said to be in urgent need of assistance.

:07:26.:07:30.

TRANSLATION: I heard a boom and then the roof came off my house

:07:31.:07:33.

The wind took the roof and it was just completely gone.

:07:34.:07:37.

As you can see, it took away everything.

:07:38.:07:40.

Our houses are destroyed, everything is gone.

:07:41.:07:46.

In the US, the hurricane hit a glancing blow along

:07:47.:07:48.

There was damage, but it wasn't as bad as expected.

:07:49.:07:56.

Millions had heeded the call to leave their homes.

:07:57.:07:58.

Further north, the storm surge brought some of the highest

:07:59.:08:01.

tides on record, flooding many low-lying areas.

:08:02.:08:04.

The National Hurricane Centre says the storm has now made landfall

:08:05.:08:07.

in South Carolina and serious inland flooding is expected.

:08:08.:08:10.

There's been another twist in the controversy which left

:08:11.:08:18.

the Ukip MEP Steven Woolfe in hospital following an altercation

:08:19.:08:20.

Mr Woolfe, who collapsed in the European Parliament

:08:21.:08:27.

on Thursday, says expert examination suggests his injuries

:08:28.:08:30.

are inconsistent with just a fall or seizure.

:08:31.:08:34.

Mr Hookem has insisted that no punches were thrown,

:08:35.:08:36.

and that the incident was just a scuffle.

:08:37.:08:44.

UK Anti-Doping officials have visited the headquarters

:08:45.:08:46.

of British Cycling and Team Sky as part of an investigation

:08:47.:08:50.

into allegations of wrongdoing in the sport.

:08:51.:08:51.

It's been confirmed that two members of UK Anti-Doping staff went

:08:52.:08:54.

to the National Cycling Centre in Manchester yesterday.

:08:55.:08:58.

They say British cycling's co-operating fully, while a Team Sky

:08:59.:09:01.

statement said it had been "a challenging few weeks",

:09:02.:09:03.

but that they were "confident there had been no wrongdoing".

:09:04.:09:08.

Johanna Konta has become the first British woman to break

:09:09.:09:11.

into the world's top ten in tennis for over 30 years after

:09:12.:09:14.

she reached the final of the China Open in Beijing.

:09:15.:09:17.

It took more than two and a half hours for her to beat

:09:18.:09:20.

the American Madison Keys in three sets.

:09:21.:09:22.

Andy Murray meanwhile is through to the men's

:09:23.:09:24.

final after comfortably winning his semifinal

:09:25.:09:26.

And England are taking on Malta in a World Cup qualifier

:09:27.:09:33.

It's Gareth Southgate's first match in charge of the team

:09:34.:09:37.

after taking over in the wake of Sam Allardyce's departure.

:09:38.:09:41.

Nearing the end of the first half, England are leading 2-0, the first

:09:42.:09:47.

scored by Daniel Sturridge. There's more throughout the evening

:09:48.:09:50.

on the BBC News Channel.
