Seven are killed and almost 50 injured

:00:00.:00:09.

in a terror attack here in central London.

:00:10.:00:17.

A white van drove into pedestrians before three men jumped

:00:18.:00:19.

out and stabbed people in nearby streets.

:00:20.:00:24.

They were running in all the pubs, all the bars,

:00:25.:00:26.

I can't remember all of them, but they run in,

:00:27.:00:29.

and I was going to people, "Run, run, run!"

:00:30.:00:32.

Distressing scenes as paramedics and the emergency services

:00:33.:00:34.

Some of the injured are in a critical condition in hospital.

:00:35.:00:42.

Police placed several bars in lockdown.

:00:43.:00:48.

People were ordered to lay on the ground

:00:49.:00:50.

Police say that within eight minutes of receiving first reports

:00:51.:01:02.

of the attack they had shot dead the three terrorists.

:01:03.:01:05.

Senior officers say they believe the incident is under control.

:01:06.:01:11.

The Prime Minister condemned the attack as a perversion

:01:12.:01:13.

of Islam and vowed to crack down on extremism.

:01:14.:01:18.

far too much tolerance of extremism in our country.

:01:19.:01:24.

So we need to become far more robust in identifying it

:01:25.:01:28.

and stamping it out across the public sector and across society.

:01:29.:01:34.

Campaigning in the general election has been suspended for today

:01:35.:01:40.

by both the Conservatives and Labour.

:01:41.:02:06.

Good afternoon from central London, where seven people have been killed

:02:07.:02:11.

and many injured during the country's second terrorist attack

:02:12.:02:19.

in less than two weeks, and the third in under three months.

:02:20.:02:26.

with what we know about last night's events.

:02:27.:02:34.

Officers were called to reports of a vehicle ploughing

:02:35.:02:36.

into pedestrians on London Bridge shortly after ten o'clock.

:02:37.:02:42.

The vehicle crashed and was abandoned.

:02:43.:02:44.

The attackers then moved a short way down the road,

:02:45.:02:47.

to nearby Borough Market, where they began stabbing people.

:02:48.:02:53.

all three attackers were shot and killed by police.

:02:54.:03:04.

the Prime Minister condemned the attack,

:03:05.:03:09.

saying, "It is time to say enough is enough."

:03:10.:03:13.

We will bring you the very latest on the events,

:03:14.:03:16.

with reports and analysis in this extended programme.

:03:17.:03:19.

Our first report on the attack is from Dan Johnson.

:03:20.:03:24.

You may find some of the images distressing.

:03:25.:03:32.

The warmth of a summer's evening shattered by sirens.

:03:33.:03:36.

A huge police response answering urgent calls for help.

:03:37.:03:40.

Just after 10pm, this white van was driven at people

:03:41.:03:46.

who were walking across London Bridge.

:03:47.:03:49.

Witnesses say three men got out and ran towards Borough Market,

:03:50.:03:55.

There was a bar full of people there just having a good time,

:03:56.:04:05.

and they went running straight into them, and then I'm not too sure

:04:06.:04:09.

what they were saying, I think they were saying,

:04:10.:04:11.

"This is for Allah," and people, you could hear them screaming,

:04:12.:04:14.

When I first see them, they were, "This is for Allah," and they run

:04:15.:04:21.

up, they stabbed this girl, I don't know how many times,

:04:22.:04:23.

And she was going, "Help me, help me," and I could not do nothing.

:04:24.:04:28.

Terror rippled through the area's bars and restaurants.

:04:29.:04:36.

as they tried to identify the attackers.

:04:37.:04:42.

as armed officers moved in and cleared the area.

:04:43.:04:47.

Less than ten minutes after the first calls, it was over -

:04:48.:04:56.

They had canisters taped to their bodies,

:04:57.:05:06.

made to look like suicide vests - but not real, the police say.

:05:07.:05:09.

The Ambulance Service and hospitals put emergency plans into action.

:05:10.:05:12.

Paramedics were there quickly, trying to save lives.

:05:13.:05:15.

On the bridge, people were treating those who'd been hit.

:05:16.:05:18.

For emergency services and for passers-by, instinctive

:05:19.:05:22.

reaction or practised major-incident response, there was praise.

:05:23.:05:26.

I visited one of the hospitals where the injured are being treated.

:05:27.:05:31.

There, I heard truly remarkable stories of extraordinarily brave

:05:32.:05:37.

actions by officers on and off duty who were first on the scene.

:05:38.:05:43.

I also heard of colleagues from other emergency services

:05:44.:05:47.

Many, many people risked their own safety to help others

:05:48.:06:04.

and to treat those seriously injured -

:06:05.:06:06.

and indeed to confront the suspects involved.

:06:07.:06:11.

Behind a growing police cordon, teams were still checking the area,

:06:12.:06:14.

for a while unsure if other attackers were still a threat.

:06:15.:06:18.

There were controlled explosions as they searched buildings.

:06:19.:06:28.

Once again, terror has torn through the election campaign, and the Prime

:06:29.:06:33.

Minister has been forced to confront some of the toughest issues. Our

:06:34.:06:40.

country has made significant progress in disrupting plots and

:06:41.:06:44.

protecting the public. But it is time to say enough is enough.

:06:45.:06:48.

Everybody needs to go about their lives as they normally would. Our

:06:49.:06:54.

society should continue to function in accordance with our values. But

:06:55.:07:00.

when it comes to taking on extremism and terrorism, things need to

:07:01.:07:04.

change. Democracy has been interrupted for the second time in a

:07:05.:07:09.

fortnight, as politicians attended an emergency cabinet committee

:07:10.:07:12.

meeting with security officials. London's mayor describe a city

:07:13.:07:14.

wounded but resolute. My message to Londoners and visitors

:07:15.:07:19.

to our great city is You will see an increased

:07:20.:07:21.

police presence today, including armed officers

:07:22.:07:25.

and uniformed officers. There is no reason

:07:26.:07:26.

to be alarmed by this. We are the safest

:07:27.:07:28.

global city in the world. You saw last night,

:07:29.:07:30.

as a consequence of our planning, preparation and the rehearsals

:07:31.:07:33.

that take place, the swift response from the emergency services,

:07:34.:07:36.

tackling the terrorists, The police investigation is

:07:37.:07:48.

spreading already. This morning, officers raided a flat in east

:07:49.:07:52.

London, but they have not confirmed its connection. There are reports of

:07:53.:07:56.

arrests. There is a large area around London Bridge that is still

:07:57.:08:00.

take..., arts of extra officers are on duty. There are plenty of

:08:01.:08:05.

questions for investigators and a lot for people to absorb. London has

:08:06.:08:09.

been through this before, but it is still a test of the city's resolve.

:08:10.:08:15.

Dan Johnson, BBC News, central London.

:08:16.:08:18.

Let's go to our correspondent Sophie Long,

:08:19.:08:20.

who's by the banks of the River Thames alongside London Bridge.

:08:21.:08:22.

Explain what is happening where you are, Sophie. Well, you can see

:08:23.:08:32.

London Bridge behind me, it is closed, the buses on its stationery.

:08:33.:08:35.

On the banks of the river Thames, it is calm, it is peaceful today, the

:08:36.:08:40.

opposite of the scenes here 15 hours ago. Just after ten o'clock last

:08:41.:08:48.

night the attackers drove their van across the bridge, ploughing into

:08:49.:08:53.

pedestrians. They then abandoned their vehicle, run down the road,

:08:54.:08:58.

attacked people in bars and restaurants, stabbing them at

:08:59.:09:02.

random. The police investigation is ongoing today, there is a large area

:09:03.:09:06.

still cordoned off. What is crucial for them is to find out who those

:09:07.:09:09.

men were and whether they were acting as part of a wider circle.

:09:10.:09:14.

For people who don't know Borough Market, it is a real foodie haven,

:09:15.:09:20.

it attracts tourists from all over the world, but it is also a place

:09:21.:09:23.

loved by locals. I have been speaking to many of them today, some

:09:24.:09:27.

of whom were caught up in the carnage. They have talked about the

:09:28.:09:31.

panic that in student as the attackers burst into bars and

:09:32.:09:34.

restaurant is, and they have also praised the brilliant and fast work

:09:35.:09:38.

of the emergency services. I think you get the sense that because of

:09:39.:09:42.

the location, this was an attack not just on London but on Londoners and

:09:43.:09:46.

their way of life. They are said to me today that they will not be

:09:47.:09:50.

terrorised, they will not live in fear, they will continue to enjoy

:09:51.:09:53.

their great city in the way that they always have. But as you say,

:09:54.:09:57.

this is the third terror attack in Britain in as many months, and there

:09:58.:10:01.

are questions being as the day about how, about why they were able to

:10:02.:10:10.

strike in this way again. Thanks for now, that is Sophie Long at London

:10:11.:10:15.

Bridge. Let's hear a little bit more from people who did witness

:10:16.:10:16.

everything here last night. One couple who live above the

:10:17.:10:18.

Southwark Tavern in Borough Market witnessed the incident

:10:19.:10:21.

as it unfolded from their window. They were able to see everything

:10:22.:10:27.

that unfolded. They've been speaking to our home

:10:28.:10:29.

editor, Mark Easton. Around about 10:10, we were just

:10:30.:10:32.

watching a film, windows wide open, and we just heard commotion,

:10:33.:10:35.

you know, glass smashing, you know, tables and chairs being tipped over.

:10:36.:10:38.

High-pitched screaming. Lots of screaming, yeah,

:10:39.:10:40.

so I jumped up, and I looked out the window onto what would be

:10:41.:10:43.

Southwark Street, and I saw lots of people screaming and running

:10:44.:10:46.

and just trying to get out Most people trying to run down

:10:47.:10:49.

into the Underground station, Yeah, people were running

:10:50.:10:54.

everywhere, you heard a man on the phone saying,

:10:55.:10:59.

there'd been a stabbing, And it was when I saw lots of people

:11:00.:11:01.

running down into the Underground that I thought it seemed a lot more

:11:02.:11:05.

serious, because it was mass panic - it wasn't just a fight,

:11:06.:11:09.

it was something serious. And there was one ambulance that

:11:10.:11:11.

had obviously gone to this stabbing. One young guy seemed

:11:12.:11:14.

to come out of the pub, and he was knocking on the window

:11:15.:11:17.

of the ambulance, he was in a panic, saying, "You have to help me,

:11:18.:11:21.

my friend, he's been stabbed, Whether or not he got stabbed

:11:22.:11:23.

in the pub or outside the pub, I don't know, and he said,

:11:24.:11:28.

"My friend's been stabbed, And there was another guy

:11:29.:11:30.

who was probably in his 40s, standing on the other side

:11:31.:11:34.

of the ambulance, knocking on the other window, saying,

:11:35.:11:36.

"I've been stabbed," I'm not sure if I've got

:11:37.:11:38.

this wrong now, because I haven't seen it on the news,

:11:39.:11:42.

but I am convinced that I heard some sort of bang

:11:43.:11:45.

in the Slug and Lettuce. Lots of people came running out

:11:46.:11:47.

of the Slug and Lettuce, then armed police ran in there,

:11:48.:11:51.

and it was in that kind of area, all the Borough High Street area

:11:52.:11:54.

we heard another series of gunshots. So I looked out the window,

:11:55.:11:57.

and there was loads of armed police. It was when everything

:11:58.:12:03.

Yeah, there wasn't a lot of people around, and there

:12:04.:12:07.

were a lot of police still, not many people, but then

:12:08.:12:10.

we were looking at the window, and the bomb robot turned up.

:12:11.:12:13.

Yeah, and then Claudia said, "It looks like there's a bomb squad

:12:14.:12:16.

At this point, they had cleared everyone out of the whole area,

:12:17.:12:20.

so I shouted down and said, "We are still up here,

:12:21.:12:23.

And then one of the police officers said, "Get out, you have to get out

:12:24.:12:27.

of the building now." He was like, "Look, just run."

:12:28.:12:34.

The experiences there of one young couple in Borough Market. Let's head

:12:35.:12:42.

to join our correspondent Helena Lee, bring us up to date with all

:12:43.:12:50.

those who were injured last night. It took just six minutes for that

:12:51.:12:54.

first ambulance to arrive at the scene where you are last night, 80

:12:55.:12:58.

medics were involved trying to treat the injured at the scene, including

:12:59.:13:04.

advance trauma units and paramedics, and also London's air ambulance. 48

:13:05.:13:09.

patients were brought to five different hospitals across London,

:13:10.:13:17.

the most seriously injured were brought to King's College Hospital

:13:18.:13:19.

and Royal London, because they have major trauma units. They have told

:13:20.:13:24.

us that 14 patients were admitted here, one has since been discharged,

:13:25.:13:29.

and also at the Royal London, 12 patients were admitted to that

:13:30.:13:33.

hospital. They have been treated for a variety of injuries, but we know

:13:34.:13:36.

this lunchtime that many are still in a critical condition in hospital.

:13:37.:13:41.

We are also getting a picture of the injured, we know that four are

:13:42.:13:46.

French, one is Australian, and among those injured are police officers as

:13:47.:13:50.

well. And as those injured are in hospital being treated by medical

:13:51.:13:55.

staff, they will start to begin to try to process exactly what happened

:13:56.:14:03.

to them last night. Helena, thank you, Helena Lee, at King's College

:14:04.:14:06.

Hospital. Let me give you that number if you have concerns about

:14:07.:14:10.

family or friends who may have been caught up in everything here in

:14:11.:14:13.

central London last night. It is a freephone number.

:14:14.:14:26.

That is the emergency helpline number if you are worried that

:14:27.:14:32.

perhaps you have friends or family who may have been in the area of

:14:33.:14:36.

London Bridge or Borough Market here last night.

:14:37.:14:37.

The Prime Minister made a number of forthright statements

:14:38.:14:40.

and how the country should respond in her Downing Street speech.

:14:41.:14:45.

Here's a little more of what she had to say.

:14:46.:14:53.

In terms of their planning and execution, the recent

:14:54.:14:56.

attacks are not connected, but we believe we are experiencing

:14:57.:15:01.

a new trend in the threat we face, as terrorism breeds terrorism,

:15:02.:15:05.

and perpetrators are inspired to attack, not only on the basis

:15:06.:15:12.

of carefully constructed plots after years of planning

:15:13.:15:15.

and training, and not even as lone attackers radicalised online,

:15:16.:15:19.

but by copying one another, and often using the crudest

:15:20.:15:21.

We cannot and must not pretend that things can continue as they are.

:15:22.:15:34.

While the recent attacks are not connected by common

:15:35.:15:37.

networks, they are connected in one important sense.

:15:38.:15:40.

They are bound together by the single evil ideology

:15:41.:15:45.

of Islamist extremism that preaches hatred, sows division

:15:46.:15:49.

It is an ideology that claims our Western values of freedom,

:15:50.:15:57.

democracy and human rights are incompatible with

:15:58.:15:59.

It is an ideology that is a perversion of Islam

:16:00.:16:06.

Defeating this ideology is one of the great challenges of our time.

:16:07.:16:13.

Since the emergence of the threat from Islamist-inspired terrorism,

:16:14.:16:19.

our country has made significant progress in disrupting plots

:16:20.:16:21.

But it is time to say enough is enough.

:16:22.:16:31.

Everybody needs to go about their lives as they normally would.

:16:32.:16:33.

Our society should continue to function

:16:34.:16:35.

But when it comes to taking on extremism and terrorism,

:16:36.:16:42.

As a mark of respect, the two political parties have

:16:43.:16:50.

suspended our national campaigns for today.

:16:51.:16:51.

But violence can never be allowed to disrupt the democratic process,

:16:52.:16:56.

so those campaigns will resume in full tomorrow, and the general

:16:57.:16:59.

election will go ahead as planned on Thursday.

:17:00.:17:07.

As a country, our response must be as it has always been when we have

:17:08.:17:10.

We must come together, we must pull together,

:17:11.:17:14.

and united we will take on and defeat our enemies.

:17:15.:17:24.

Theresa May speaking outside Downing Street earlier today.

:17:25.:17:28.

Our home affairs correspondent, Daniel Sandford, is outside

:17:29.:17:30.

What's the latest on the investigation?

:17:31.:17:36.

Once again the centre of London is alive with the screams of police

:17:37.:17:43.

sirens dashing from location to location. The first release job is

:17:44.:17:48.

to deal with the crime scene, a massive crime scene, from London

:17:49.:17:51.

Bridge the Borough Market Asharq wrote the first police job. -- the

:17:52.:17:59.

first police job. They have been starting to identify but suspects

:18:00.:18:04.

they shot. There have been a series of raids in Barking. 12 people have

:18:05.:18:10.

been arrested, not all will turn out to be involved, but 12 people

:18:11.:18:14.

associated with at least one of the suspects shot dead last night, an

:18:15.:18:18.

important part of the inquiry, was there anyone else apart from the

:18:19.:18:22.

main perpetrators, as the prime early macro Home Secretary described

:18:23.:18:30.

them? Four of their own officers were injured, two seriously, one

:18:31.:18:33.

from the British Transport Police, seriously injured, and an off duty

:18:34.:18:38.

Metropolitan Police officer, a rugby player, he tackled one of the

:18:39.:18:46.

attackers last night and he himself sustained bad knife injuries. He is

:18:47.:18:49.

seriously injured in hospital but not thought to be suffering from

:18:50.:18:56.

life-threatening injuries. Daniel, when we hear the strong tone from

:18:57.:19:00.

the Prime Minister, when she talks about changes, what might it

:19:01.:19:06.

actually mean? A powerful phrase from Theresa May, things have got to

:19:07.:19:10.

change. It echoes what Tony Blair said after the 7th of July bombings

:19:11.:19:14.

in London 12 years ago when he said, the rules of the game are changing.

:19:15.:19:19.

She specified a few things, one was there should not any longer be a

:19:20.:19:23.

safe space on the internet. But will be highly controversial, after the

:19:24.:19:29.

Edward Snowden revelations, when people are concerned about

:19:30.:19:32.

encryption and wanted to make sure governments are not spying on them

:19:33.:19:36.

on the internet, Naldo Governments are saying, we need to make sure

:19:37.:19:44.

there is not a safe space on the internet for extremism to breed. She

:19:45.:19:47.

has also talked about longer sentences for people found guilty of

:19:48.:19:51.

minor terrorism offences, echoing Tony Blair 12 years ago, trying to

:19:52.:19:56.

step up the seriousness of the punishments given to people who get

:19:57.:20:03.

involved in extremism. Daniel Sandford, thank you very much, our

:20:04.:20:11.

home affairs correspondent. Frank Gardner, our security correspondent.

:20:12.:20:14.

Three attacks in the UK in about three months. Are we looking at any

:20:15.:20:20.

sort of pattern here? What is your assessment? It is starting to look

:20:21.:20:25.

like a concerted campaign by so-called Islamic State. The

:20:26.:20:30.

backdrop to all of this is that there is a concentrated stream of

:20:31.:20:33.

propaganda coming out of what is left of so-called Islamic State but

:20:34.:20:37.

is calling on the followers to carry out attacks on crusader civilians,

:20:38.:20:44.

ordinary people, to you and me. Not just in Britain, but across

:20:45.:20:47.

continental Europe too. The attacks we have seen in London last night

:20:48.:20:52.

followed, I'm afraid, the exact instructions of what has been pumped

:20:53.:20:57.

out of Mosul, wherever they are hiding, to do exactly this. It is in

:20:58.:21:01.

reaction to the fact that self-professed caliphate they have

:21:02.:21:07.

got there is shrinking, it is being defeated by forces on the ground.

:21:08.:21:10.

The islets Dilley Margret ideology will not go away. The numbers are

:21:11.:21:18.

scary. -- the ideology. There are 500 active plots being investigated,

:21:19.:21:22.

3000 so-called subjects of interest, people under surveillance, and a

:21:23.:21:27.

further details dozen people known to the authorities. The questions

:21:28.:21:33.

now are going to be who else is a part of this? Is anyone else linked

:21:34.:21:36.

to it customer did anyone else know about it who could have stopped it?

:21:37.:21:41.

-- is anyone else linked to it? Last night's attack comes just four

:21:42.:21:48.

days before the general election. The Prime Minister announced it

:21:49.:21:50.

will go ahead as planned. People will go to the polls on

:21:51.:21:52.

Thursday. National campaigning has been

:21:53.:21:56.

suspended by all major The latest report on all of this

:21:57.:22:06.

comes from our political correspondent, LE price.

:22:07.:22:10.

Flags flying at half-mast over Downing Street,

:22:11.:22:18.

as senior Cabinet figures and police officials arrive at a Cobra meeting

:22:19.:22:21.

Just four days before a general election,

:22:22.:22:24.

the main parties announced they would postpone

:22:25.:22:25.

But it would get underway again tomorrow.

:22:26.:22:29.

On the one hand, clearly we want to respect the people

:22:30.:22:33.

We want to pay proper respect, and therefore, we don't

:22:34.:22:41.

But on the other hand, the people doing this are doing this

:22:42.:22:45.

because they despise the freedoms that we have.

:22:46.:22:47.

And those freedoms can be the freedom to go out on a Saturday

:22:48.:22:50.

night or the freedom to cast their vote.

:22:51.:22:52.

The Labour leader, Jeremy Corbyn, said despite today's

:22:53.:22:54.

campaign suspension, the democratic process

:22:55.:22:55.

I can't recall any other election when there's

:22:56.:22:58.

I hope that it will not disrupt our process, because we have

:22:59.:23:07.

But I also hope we will reflect on the need to have sufficient

:23:08.:23:13.

police officers on our streets, and also sufficient intelligence

:23:14.:23:15.

But in response, as in Manchester, all communities must come together.

:23:16.:23:20.

It is right that we suspend our national campaigning.

:23:21.:23:23.

But it's also right that we get the balance right.

:23:24.:23:30.

And we are proud of our democracy, and that in the midst

:23:31.:23:32.

of an election, all parties, no matter who you support,

:23:33.:23:35.

ought to continue with that local campaigning, and we should get

:23:36.:23:38.

on with the national campaigning soon.

:23:39.:23:39.

It must not be that the terrorists put us in a position

:23:40.:23:47.

where we weaken our democracy in response to that outrage.

:23:48.:23:49.

In Scotland, the SNP leader and First Minister Nicola Sturgeon,

:23:50.:23:52.

also not campaigning, will chair a meeting of the Scottish

:23:53.:23:54.

Government's Resilience Committee in the wake of the attack.

:23:55.:23:56.

But unlike the other main political parties,

:23:57.:23:58.

Ukip say they won't suspend national campaigning today.

:23:59.:24:01.

The Prime Minister says we must not have the democratic process

:24:02.:24:04.

stopped by terrorism, therefore we're going

:24:05.:24:05.

We think we should be having an honest conversation

:24:06.:24:14.

about the real mistakes we've made in the past, and what we need

:24:15.:24:17.

This election campaign has seen two terror attacks in as many weeks.

:24:18.:24:22.

When the campaign does get back under way tomorrow,

:24:23.:24:26.

it's likely to be more muted and the issue of security firmly

:24:27.:24:29.

And our political correspondent, Ellie Price,

:24:30.:24:32.

Your thoughts about the ramifications this might have in

:24:33.:24:45.

terms of Thursday's vote. We might have just found the first thing all

:24:46.:24:49.

of the political parties agree on something the Prime Minister said a

:24:50.:24:52.

few hours ago. Violence can never be allowed to disrupt the democratic

:24:53.:24:59.

process. But there is no doubt we are in uncharted territory. The last

:25:00.:25:03.

Sunday before the election campaign, it usually is one of the busiest

:25:04.:25:08.

days before the election. All the party leaders were expected to make

:25:09.:25:12.

campaign speeches today, they have all been put on hold. There is no

:25:13.:25:17.

doubt this event will affect this campaign both in terms of tone and

:25:18.:25:22.

content. All the parties now have a difficult line to tread between

:25:23.:25:25.

being seen to respect those who have died and not be seen to be seeking

:25:26.:25:33.

to make political gain or capital out of these events, but also to be

:25:34.:25:36.

seen to address the big concern of voters which is the big issue of

:25:37.:25:41.

security. There is a sense that they will not let terrorism disrupt this

:25:42.:25:49.

campaign but it may just define it. Thank you for now. There has been

:25:50.:25:56.

reaction from around the world to this attack in central London.

:25:57.:26:00.

President Trump called the Prime Minister to offer his

:26:01.:26:02.

condolences for what he called the brutal terror attack.

:26:03.:26:07.

The French President, Emmanuel Macron, said his country

:26:08.:26:09.

was standing, more than ever, side by side with the UK.

:26:10.:26:13.

Here's our diplomatic correspondent, James Landale.

:26:14.:26:18.

This attack may have been targeted on the people of London,

:26:19.:26:21.

but the threat of terrorism is global,

:26:22.:26:23.

and world leaders were quick to show their solidarity.

:26:24.:26:26.

Australia's Prime Minister said that two Australians

:26:27.:26:28.

had been directly affected by the incident.

:26:29.:26:31.

We send our heartfelt sympathy and love to the victims

:26:32.:26:35.

and their families, and to the people of Britain.

:26:36.:26:40.

This attack is yet another cruel example of the new reality

:26:41.:26:44.

in which we live, the ever-present threat of murderous

:26:45.:26:47.

From across the world, leaders took to social media to

:26:48.:26:55.

Chancellor Merkel saying that Germany stood firmly and decisively

:26:56.:26:59.

at the side of Great Britain in the fight against terrorism.

:27:00.:27:02.

In New York, the authorities increased security across the city,

:27:03.:27:04.

particularly in areas full of pedestrians and tourists,

:27:05.:27:06.

Donald Trump called Theresa May to offer his condolences.

:27:07.:27:16.

In a series of tweets, the president offered his help,

:27:17.:27:18.

but he also used the incident to renew his demands for

:27:19.:27:23.

a ban on travellers from six mostly Muslim countries.

:27:24.:27:27.

And he also appeared to criticise the Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan,

:27:28.:27:30.

for saying there was no need to be alarmed.

:27:31.:27:32.

At a security conference in Singapore,

:27:33.:27:34.

New Zealand's Defence Minister echoed Theresa May's call

:27:35.:27:36.

for tighter controls over the internet.

:27:37.:27:39.

We know that terror organisations look to galvanise support

:27:40.:27:43.

and exploit porous borders, disenfranchised individuals,

:27:44.:27:49.

and the access provided by the internet and social media.

:27:50.:27:51.

This is a clear and present security threat to us all.

:27:52.:27:57.

Four French nationals were caught up in the attack,

:27:58.:27:59.

visited a crisis centre monitoring events.

:28:00.:28:03.

Security has already been tightened at polling stations in London

:28:04.:28:10.

for next week's elections to the French parliament.

:28:11.:28:12.

TRANSLATION: France and the United Kingdom

:28:13.:28:15.

are allies that have been subjected to a common threat,

:28:16.:28:17.

and we will be united in our joint response to it.

:28:18.:28:22.

President Macron spoke to Theresa May this morning

:28:23.:28:25.

and reminded the Prime Minister of the importance

:28:26.:28:27.

of European cooperation in the fight against terrorism.

:28:28.:28:30.

Of course, this attack comes less than two weeks

:28:31.:28:44.

after the bombing in Manchester, in which 22 people and dozens

:28:45.:28:47.

were injured, at a concert by the American

:28:48.:28:49.

The there is a benefit concert taking place tonight in Manchester

:28:50.:29:04.

to raise money for people who suffered in that attack. The

:29:05.:29:07.

organisers have said the concert is going ahead. Let us go to the venue

:29:08.:29:12.

and join our entertainment correspondent. Give us a sense of

:29:13.:29:18.

what people are saying there and what the mood is in the run-up to

:29:19.:29:24.

the concert. There has been a noticeable step up in security in

:29:25.:29:29.

the last hour. It has been described as a ring of steel around Old

:29:30.:29:33.

Trafford cricket ground with police brought in from all around Britain,

:29:34.:29:42.

from Essex, from road -- from Humberside. The armed police, not

:29:43.:29:46.

your normal site at a pop concert. The fans have been queueing up since

:29:47.:29:51.

9am and many have said the families begged them not to come after the

:29:52.:29:55.

events in London last night but they said they wanted to be here, as an

:29:56.:30:00.

act of solidarity to Ariana Grande and to not let them win. We have

:30:01.:30:03.

heard from Ariana Grande's manager and he says he has contacted all 11

:30:04.:30:09.

acts on the bill, including the likes of Take That, Katy Perry,

:30:10.:30:15.

Justin Bieber, and they all want to perform. The phrase he has used, the

:30:16.:30:20.

reason tonight's concert has to go ahead, fear and hatred cannot win.

:30:21.:30:25.

It has been an incredible achievement to get this concert

:30:26.:30:30.

together, 13 days since the concert at Manchester Arena, to put it into

:30:31.:30:35.

context, the achievement, Live Aid, 1985, Wembley Stadium, 20 acts

:30:36.:30:40.

crammed into ten hours. Today there are 11 acts in just three hours. It

:30:41.:30:45.

is going to be a real achievement to get them on. The most important

:30:46.:30:49.

thing is that it is going ahead in the face of adversity. Thank you.

:30:50.:30:57.

Colin in Manchester. Before we leave you for this programme from London

:30:58.:31:01.

Bridge, let us remind you of what unfolded here late last night.

:31:02.:31:10.

Officers were called to reports of a vehicle ploughing

:31:11.:31:12.

into pedestrians on London Bridge shortly after 10pm.

:31:13.:31:14.

The vehicle crashed and was abandoned.

:31:15.:31:15.

The attackers then moved a short way down the road,

:31:16.:31:19.

to nearby Borough Market where they began stabbing people.

:31:20.:31:23.

It would have been extremely busy at that time of night.

:31:24.:31:28.

Within eight minutes, all three attackers were shot

:31:29.:31:30.

The police have said the investigation is ongoing and as we

:31:31.:31:43.

have been standing here this morning, at the edge of the police

:31:44.:31:48.

cordon, people have been bringing flowers and there is now a small

:31:49.:31:52.

number of flowers as people pay tribute already to the seven people

:31:53.:31:57.

who died and those who are injured in this second terrorist attack in

:31:58.:32:02.

less than a fortnight. There will be continuing coverage from BBC News

:32:03.:32:06.

throughout the day. You can see all of that on the BBC News Channel.

:32:07.:32:10.

The next news on BBC One is at 5:55pm.

:32:11.:32:15.

From here at London Bridge, it is goodbye.

:32:16.:32:26.

After a weekend sunshine and showers, some notable showers on the

:32:27.:32:32.

way for some of us on Monday and Tuesday. That comes after a drier

:32:33.:32:37.

than normal spring, the months of March, April and May. In the brown,
