Iraqi forces say they've captured so-called Islamic State's main base

:00:00.:00:07.

in Mosul, and a final victory is in sight.

:00:08.:00:12.

After eight months of intense fighting, they have IS in retreat,

:00:13.:00:15.

but the battle for the militants' last stronghold in Iraq isn't over.

:00:16.:00:21.

After the Grenfell Tower fire, Ministers promise to keep a close

:00:22.:00:23.

eye on the local council, but won't appoint independent

:00:24.:00:26.

The Lions win a thrilling battle against the All Blacks

:00:27.:00:36.

to tie the Test series, with one to play.

:00:37.:00:45.

And tributes to the film critic Barry Norman,

:00:46.:00:47.

Iraqi forces say they've taken control of the main base

:00:48.:01:15.

of the so-called Islamic State group in the city of Mosul after days

:01:16.:01:18.

The militants have been driven from a hospital compound

:01:19.:01:23.

where several senior IS leaders were thought to have been hiding.

:01:24.:01:27.

Fighting continues in the Old City area, but commanders say they're

:01:28.:01:30.

confident a final victory is in sight.

:01:31.:01:33.

Our correspondent, Orla Guerin, reports from Mosul.

:01:34.:01:39.

A symbol of victory, planted this morning

:01:40.:01:41.

in what was the main base of IS in Mosul.

:01:42.:01:47.

Troops, weary after driving the militants from this

:01:48.:01:50.

vast medical complex, but vowing to hunt down

:01:51.:01:52.

"We will keep chasing them and those who support them," says this man,

:01:53.:02:03.

"and we will throw them in the garbage."

:02:04.:02:11.

Commanders say they have removed a cancer here,

:02:12.:02:15.

"Our message is Daesh is not only an Iraqi problem," says

:02:16.:02:24.

He was interrupted by a booby-trapped bomb.

:02:25.:02:37.

The militants may have gone from here, but they left

:02:38.:02:40.

And plenty of wreckage in Iraq's second largest city.

:02:41.:02:47.

Well, this is what victory looks like in Mosul after more

:02:48.:02:49.

The remaining IS militants have been driven from here,

:02:50.:02:59.

This hospital complex, which was a place of healing,

:03:00.:03:03.

now lies in ruins, like many other parts of Mosul.

:03:04.:03:06.

The city may be regaining its freedom, but there will be

:03:07.:03:08.

Some of those who fought to reclaim this territory will never go home,

:03:09.:03:17.

including four soldiers killed yesterday by another booby-trap.

:03:18.:03:22.

The body of one of them was found this morning by his friend.

:03:23.:03:28.

TRANSLATION: Yesterday, we were together,

:03:29.:03:32.

He said, "I am not afraid of Daesh, and you should not be either."

:03:33.:03:39.

Then he went into the hospital and was mortared.

:03:40.:03:45.

Commanders admit that even when it is, there is a real

:03:46.:03:51.

The Government says it has no plans at the moment to send independent

:03:52.:04:03.

commissioners to Kensington and Chelsea, following criticism

:04:04.:04:06.

of the council's handling of the Grenfell Tower fire disaster.

:04:07.:04:09.

The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, had urged ministers to intervene,

:04:10.:04:12.

following the resignation yesterday of the leader of the council.

:04:13.:04:16.

But the government says it will keep a close eye on the situation.

:04:17.:04:19.

As tributes continue to be made, and the missing posters line

:04:20.:04:26.

many of the streets, the anger towards the

:04:27.:04:31.

Things were bad enough before this happened but the vacuum

:04:32.:04:40.

that they left afterwards has made everything very difficult because

:04:41.:04:42.

It needs not just a few people to change but a real

:04:43.:04:47.

And a shift in the culture of what they think is important

:04:48.:04:51.

and their understanding of what is needed in this area.

:04:52.:04:53.

It was the breakdown of the council's first Cabinet

:04:54.:04:55.

meeting since the fire at Grenfell Tower that led

:04:56.:04:58.

Is this the first good decision you have made, Mr Paget-Brown?

:04:59.:05:02.

Pressure had been mounting on Nicholas Paget-Brown

:05:03.:05:04.

following intense criticism of the way the disaster had been

:05:05.:05:06.

The resignation has been welcomed by many, including

:05:07.:05:13.

the Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, who has urged

:05:14.:05:16.

the Prime Minister to appoint commissioners to run the borough.

:05:17.:05:19.

Commissioners who are untainted should take over the running

:05:20.:05:23.

of the council to act in the best interests of residents.

:05:24.:05:27.

But the government says it's keeping its options open.

:05:28.:05:31.

Nothing is off the table in making sure that the local residents -

:05:32.:05:35.

especially the victims, their families and friends -

:05:36.:05:37.

Clearly, there is a role for the local council,

:05:38.:05:41.

there is a role for government and many others.

:05:42.:05:44.

But where anyone is not stepping up and doing what is expected of them,

:05:45.:05:47.

then nothing should be off the table.

:05:48.:05:49.

The council now needs a new leader and that person will have to be

:05:50.:05:53.

elected by the council itself, not by the people.

:05:54.:05:58.

Some residents here say they are not happy with that.

:05:59.:06:00.

They want a bigger say on who is going to be making

:06:01.:06:03.

And some are sceptical of the selection process itself.

:06:04.:06:10.

They need to stay in constant engagement with us.

:06:11.:06:12.

They cannot just impose their old boy network

:06:13.:06:15.

and their friends and family scheme that they seem to operate elsewhere.

:06:16.:06:21.

There needs to be a proper process for the selection.

:06:22.:06:26.

It is understood a new council leader will be elected next week.

:06:27.:06:29.

Their priority - to rebuild the trust with those whose lives

:06:30.:06:32.

have been torn apart by this tragedy.

:06:33.:06:35.

Thousands of people have been protesting in central

:06:36.:06:43.

London, calling for an end to government cuts.

:06:44.:06:46.

The demonstrators marched to Parliament Square,

:06:47.:06:48.

where they were addressed by the Labour leader, Jeremy Corbyn.

:06:49.:06:52.

The economic arguments of austerity are in retreat.

:06:53.:06:56.

It's those of social justice, of unity, of people coming together,

:06:57.:07:00.

to oppose racism and all those that would divide us that are the ones

:07:01.:07:03.

This is the age in which we will achieve that decency and social

:07:04.:07:13.

That is what brings us here together today.

:07:14.:07:19.

Our political correspondent, Iain Watson, is here.

:07:20.:07:24.

More calls for an end to cuts and the public sector pay cap. Is there

:07:25.:07:33.

any sign of a shift in the government's linking? Generally, I

:07:34.:07:38.

have been told the Cabinet is split on the principle of lifting the 1%

:07:39.:07:44.

pay cut and there is pressure, never mind from Jeremy Corbyn, from

:07:45.:07:48.

Conservative MPs to do so. There was an assumption that this could not be

:07:49.:07:52.

done until the Chancellor delivers his autumn budget but this is not

:07:53.:07:56.

the case, there is a range of pay review bodies covering different

:07:57.:07:58.

professions in a structure that would allow the government to

:07:59.:08:03.

increase the pay of nurses but not necessarily doctors and two of those

:08:04.:08:06.

pay review bodies are due to report very soon later this month and a

:08:07.:08:11.

government minister told me this evening that the government will

:08:12.:08:15.

honour of the recommendations of those committees and, crucially,

:08:16.:08:17.

will honour those recommendations even if they say that page should go

:08:18.:08:26.

up by more than 1%. What we could see is at least the phased end of

:08:27.:08:30.

the public sector pay cap very soon. Many thanks. Iain Watson, there.

:08:31.:08:31.

Pro-democracy protests have taken place on the 20th anniversary

:08:32.:08:33.

of the handover of the former British colony of

:08:34.:08:36.

Several activists were arrested after clashing with police

:08:37.:08:39.

The Chinese President, who was visiting the territory,

:08:40.:08:43.

warned against any challenge to his government's authority.

:08:44.:08:46.

Our China editor, Carrie Gracie, reports.

:08:47.:08:51.

Not the images China wanted for the 20th anniversary

:08:52.:08:54.

Democracy activists trying to gate-crash the party.

:08:55.:09:05.

Swearing in a new government and delivering stern words

:09:22.:09:26.

Tough love was the message throughout his tour of Hong Kong.

:09:27.:09:37.

Hong Kong may be special but it must learn to love the motherland.

:09:38.:09:45.

But sorry, we are the ones who asked for democracy and we will not

:09:46.:09:52.

show our loyalty to the one party dictatorship leader.

:09:53.:09:56.

No sooner had President Xi left, the streets filled with protesters.

:09:57.:10:01.

Marking the anniversary of the handover in their usual style.

:10:02.:10:16.

Shouting at China patriots to go back to the mainland.

:10:17.:10:18.

Taiwan flags among countless ways to defy one-party China.

:10:19.:10:23.

China controls the hard power in Hong Kong but this illustrates

:10:24.:10:26.

They didn't come out to welcome President Xi,

:10:27.:10:32.

they didn't come out to celebrate 20 years since the handover

:10:33.:10:35.

They are here on the street to demand democracy and to cherish

:10:36.:10:39.

20 years since the handover and tacking between two masters

:10:40.:10:48.

The Hong Kong public want more say in their lives.

:10:49.:10:54.

But this city is profoundly uncertain about what the next 20

The funeral has taken place of the former

:11:05.:11:17.

He was honoured in a special ceremony at the European Parliament,

:11:18.:11:23.

attended by several world leaders, and then buried in his home town.

:11:24.:11:28.

He died last month at the age 87 and was instrumental in Germany's

:11:29.:11:31.

reunification and also a major driving force behind

:11:32.:11:33.

Huge crowds have been celebrating Canada's 150th birthday.

:11:34.:11:43.

The Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, said

:11:44.:11:45.

he was proud his nation was known for its compassion and diversity.

:11:46.:11:49.

Prince Charles told the crowds that Canada was an example to many.

:11:50.:11:53.

From Ottawa, our chief correspondent,

:11:54.:11:54.

Prince Charles was driven in a coach flanked by

:11:55.:12:01.

Royal Canadian Mounted Police through the capital,

:12:02.:12:04.

Ottawa, as the country celebrated its 150th anniversary.

:12:05.:12:08.

He was representing the Queen, who remains Canadian head of state.

:12:09.:12:13.

The Canadian Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, introduced

:12:14.:12:15.

There was recognition that the celebrations were taking

:12:16.:12:25.

place on the ancestral lands of the Algonquin people -

:12:26.:12:27.

Also among the performers was Bono, with his own message.

:12:28.:12:35.

When others build walls, we'll open doors.

:12:36.:12:39.

It was a message expanded on by Prime Minister Trudeau.

:12:40.:12:43.

We don't care where you are from or what religion

:12:44.:12:46.

Justin Trudeau defined Canada as a country built on diversity,

:12:47.:12:59.

A country where tackling climate change was an

:13:00.:13:09.

Prince Charles didn't mention Canada's British ties but he paid

:13:10.:13:13.

Around the world, Canada is recognised

:13:14.:13:18.

And as a powerful and consistent example of diversity.

:13:19.:13:30.

This was a day that underlined that in North America,

:13:31.:13:33.

Canada's voice is distinctive and increasingly different

:13:34.:13:35.

In rugby, the British and Irish Lions have recorded one

:13:36.:13:45.

of their greatest victories, beating New Zealand in Wellington

:13:46.:13:48.

They won by 24 points to 21, the first Lions win

:13:49.:13:54.

against New Zealand in almost a quarter of a century.

:13:55.:13:57.

All eyes will be on next week's final, deciding test.

:13:58.:14:00.

From Wellington, here's Katie Gornall.

:14:01.:14:09.

Weather in rugby can be a great leveller and when you're up

:14:10.:14:12.

against the All Blacks, it all helps.

:14:13.:14:14.

Defeat here and any dreams of the Lions making

:14:15.:14:16.

For 12 years New Zealand has waited for the return of the Lions

:14:17.:14:21.

and these fans know their team is going to have to produce the game

:14:22.:14:25.

of their careers in the wind and rain at Wellington

:14:26.:14:27.

if they are to keep the series alive.

:14:28.:14:30.

Up against the most fearsome winning machine in sport,

:14:31.:14:32.

the Lions the Lions had been set up for a bruising encounter.

:14:33.:14:35.

But it takes more than brute force to knock

:14:36.:14:37.

The conditions made even the basics a challenge.

:14:38.:14:43.

But if there was tension, it certainly wasn't in the mind

:14:44.:14:46.

of Owen Farrell, who finished this as if he was playing in the park.

:14:47.:14:50.

In such a cauldron, cool heads were needed.

Sonny Bill Williams becoming the first All Black to be

Often much of what Toby Faletau does goes unnoticed.

Any lion will tell you it is better to be the hunter than the hunted

:15:04.:15:09.

and with their tails up, Conor Murray seized his chance.

:15:10.:15:11.

With the scores level in the final minutes,

:15:12.:15:13.

A final kick, a final roar, a penalty that

:15:14.:15:16.

I didn't even celebrate when the final whistle went,

:15:17.:15:21.

They won the first half and we won the second half and we have got

:15:22.:15:28.

This'll be a victory that lives long in the memory.

:15:29.:15:32.

The film critic and journalist Barry Norman has died.

:15:51.:15:57.

For more than 25 years he hosted a film show for the BBC,

:15:58.:16:02.

which was regarded by many as essential viewing.

Tonight, Joseph Losey talks about the assassination of

A slightly stiff and nervous new TV presenter, Barry Norman.

Who then went on to 26 years of The Film

To meet you, I just have to make another movie!

I just have to go out and spend $65 million!

Good evening, or rather, where you are,

:16:58.:16:58.

He could be witty and waspish but off-screen he was rather

:16:59.:17:02.

less serious, according to one of his close friends.

:17:03.:17:04.

He came over on the screen, quite rightly, as a man

:17:05.:17:07.

And somebody said this very day, a very serious man?

:17:08.:17:15.

He liked people, he was gregarious, he loved to laugh.

:17:16.:17:22.

That, in a sense, is why it is there.

:17:23.:17:28.

He even had the honour of a Spitting Image puppet,

:17:29.:17:33.

but that alleged catchphrase - "and why not?"

:17:34.:17:35.

But by 1998, frustrated at being bounced around

:17:36.:17:43.

the schedules, he left the BBC for Sky.
