Some of the BBC's best known female personalities have written an open

:00:22.:00:26.

letter to the corporation's director-general, calling on him

:00:27.:00:28.

to take urgent action to ensure women are paid the same as men doing

:00:29.:00:31.

The presenters Claire Balding, Fiona Bruce and Jane Garvey

:00:32.:00:36.

The Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn said the pay gap was appalling,

:00:37.:00:44.

and called for a pay audit of every organisation.

:00:45.:00:47.

Our media correspondent David Sillito reports.

:00:48.:00:53.

Alex Jones of the One Show, Michelle Hussain, Sue Barker.

:00:54.:00:57.

Three of more than 40 famous names calling on the BBC to act now

:00:58.:01:00.

This open letter to the papers says that this week's annual

:01:01.:01:06.

report confirmed what many have long suspected.

:01:07.:01:12.

That women were being paid less than men for the same work.

:01:13.:01:15.

On the whole, I think it's fantastic that so many wonderful women have

:01:16.:01:18.

been prepared to stick their head above the parapet.

:01:19.:01:24.

We've got stick, we knew we were going to get stick,

:01:25.:01:27.

that's why it was never going to be an easy thing to do.

:01:28.:01:30.

In fact, it's not about getting whacking great pay rises for women

:01:31.:01:34.

It's about pay parity and getting fairness for everybody.

:01:35.:01:38.

On the list revealed this week, the 20 highest-paid male stars

:01:39.:01:40.

The top 20 women, less than half that.

:01:41.:01:45.

This, they say, isn't a call for more pay -

:01:46.:01:47.

Absolutely set in stone if you are doing the same job

:01:48.:02:02.

as a man, exactly the same job, you have to be on the same rate.

:02:03.:02:06.

And the Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn says the corporation

:02:07.:02:11.

needs to look at itself, but added this went much

:02:12.:02:13.

We would insist on a strong gender pay audit of every organisation,

:02:14.:02:23.

and we'd also look at the 20:1 ratio between the chief executive

:02:24.:02:27.

and the lowest paid staff in every public sector organisation.

:02:28.:02:33.

In response, the BBC says its overall pay gap is 10%,

:02:34.:02:36.

less than the national average of 18%, and it's working

:02:37.:02:39.

But today's signatories want that to happen sooner rather than later.

:02:40.:02:47.

Our political correspondent Leila Nathoo is here.

:02:48.:02:57.

Leila, as we heard from Jeremy Corbyn, this is part of a wider

:02:58.:03:04.

political debate about pay? I think it is. As of April this year the

:03:05.:03:09.

Government has forced employers with more than 250 staff to publish

:03:10.:03:14.

information on their gender pay gap, taking into account bonuses too and

:03:15.:03:18.

also information on the proportion of men and women at different levels

:03:19.:03:24.

of the pay structure. The equalities Minister Justine Greening spoke this

:03:25.:03:27.

morning and said these regulations mandating transparency on the issue

:03:28.:03:32.

are designed to demonstrate to organisations that it is a matter of

:03:33.:03:35.

reputation to encourage them to change. She said it was very hard to

:03:36.:03:40.

justify some of the big pay differentials seen at the BBC, but

:03:41.:03:44.

as with Jeremy Corbyn's call for a gender pay gap ordered to be

:03:45.:03:48.

extended to all organisations regardless of size as well as an

:03:49.:03:51.

idea of pay ratios between the highest and lowest paid members of

:03:52.:03:59.

staff in the public sector organisations, I think it is clear

:04:00.:04:02.

the issue extends beyond those at the top of the BBC and also reaches

:04:03.:04:03.

further than the BBC. Thank you. A 20-year-old man has died in east

:04:04.:04:05.

London after being apprehended CCTV footage has emerged

:04:06.:04:07.

of the officer wrestling the man to the floor of the shop in Hackney

:04:08.:04:11.

early yesterday morning. What more can you tell us about this

:04:12.:04:28.

incident? This video has been shared widely on social media and has

:04:29.:04:32.

provoked a lot of anger among some people, especially in the black

:04:33.:04:35.

community. One man said to me today that no white kid would ever have

:04:36.:04:39.

been treated like this. You can see the young man running into the shop

:04:40.:04:45.

behind me, filmed on security camera, pursued by a uniformed

:04:46.:04:50.

police officer. There is a struggle, eventually the young man falls to

:04:51.:04:56.

the floor. At some stage you can see something being put in his mouth,

:04:57.:05:02.

eventually he is restrained with handcuffs. It appears two officers

:05:03.:05:07.

are involved. The Independent Police Complaints Commission to go over

:05:08.:05:12.

this inquiry very soon, they say there is evidence that something was

:05:13.:05:16.

found in Amman 's throat at the scene. The borough commander in

:05:17.:05:19.

Hackney today said no police officer was exempt from the law and would

:05:20.:05:24.

not wish to be, he said there would be lots of speculation in the next

:05:25.:05:27.

few days about about how the young man died. He has been named locally

:05:28.:05:33.

as Rashan Jermaine Charles. Princes William and Harry have

:05:34.:05:36.

spoken about Princess Diana In a documentary marking the 20th

:05:37.:05:38.

anniversary of her death, they describe her sense of fun

:05:39.:05:42.

but also their regret at their last conversation

:05:43.:05:44.

with her being a rushed phone call. Our royal correspondent,

:05:45.:05:47.

Nicholas Witchell's report contains To the watching world,

:05:48.:05:48.

she was the princess whose image It was a glamorous

:05:49.:05:55.

but necessarily limited Now nearly 20 years after Diana's

:05:56.:05:59.

death in the car accident in Paris, her sons William and Harry have

:06:00.:06:07.

spoken in an ITV documentary about Diana, the mother who did

:06:08.:06:09.

so much to shape their childhood. We felt, you know, incredibly

:06:10.:06:15.

loved, Harry and I. And I'm very grateful that that

:06:16.:06:18.

love still feels there. It was that love that

:06:19.:06:25.

even if she was on the other side of the room, as a son

you could feel it. The person who emerges from William

The president of the German Automotive Industry Association has

Cycling and Chris Froome is expected to win his fourth Tour de

:08:11.:08:13.

He remains the overall leader going into the final stage in Paris

:08:14.:08:17.

and won't be challenged by other riders.

:08:18.:08:18.

Our sports correspondent Richard Conway is in Paris

:08:19.:08:25.

Richard, when can we expect to see Chris Froome on the winner 's

:08:26.:08:34.

podium? It will be about five hours from now. I am at the Champs-Elysees

:08:35.:08:39.

in the centre of Paris, crowds are building, there is a party

atmosphere in the city because they ready to welcome back the riders

ability. Rigoberta to a run of Colombia and Romain Bardet of France

are his main rivals. It is Chris Froome who will stand victorious at

the end of the race. He will do a collapse of the Champs-Elysees and

Chris Froome will stand on the podium to be crowned as Tour de

The next news on BBC One is at 6:30pm.

:09:28.:09:29.

The weekend for some of us has been a bit of a wash-out. Far from ideal.

:09:30.:09:50.

Today not ideal. There is some fine weather around, here is Shropshire,

:09:51.:09:54.

some fair weather cloud. I will show you where that is in relation to the

:09:55.:09:58.

weather we're having, there is a lump of rain crossing central and

:09:59.:10:01.

southern England now, that is where the picture was taken. Heavy rain in

:10:02.:10:06.

cool weather across the north-east of England and eastern Scotland.

:10:07.:10:20.

This is Fifa, not a pretty picture. For the moment, the areas I picked

:10:21.:10:26.

out in the south and the damp and cool weather in the north-east of

:10:27.:10:29.

Scotland and North East of England. The best of the weather will

:10:30.:10:33.

probably be across western coastal areas, Cornwall, Devon West Wales,

:10:34.:10:37.

but across the Midlands you are at risk of catching some downpours and

:10:38.:10:42.

maybe thunder and lightning. A nice day in Northern Ireland, 21 Celsius.

:10:43.:10:48.

Here is the rain across the Lake District, Sunderland and Newcastle.

:10:49.:10:51.

Northern and western Scotland are doing fine, temperatures in the high

:10:52.:10:56.

teens with sunshine. The rain pivot southwards here and eastwards, it

:10:57.:11:01.

will be quite cloudy with damp weather from Hull into the Midlands

:11:02.:11:05.

and the south-east. Western areas, through the course of the night,

:11:06.:11:09.

will clear up a bit so there will be spells of rain. The good weather

:11:10.:11:14.

across the Atlantic is here, high-pressure, trying to build in

:11:15.:11:18.

but we are still close to the low, on the backside of the lower on

:11:19.:11:26.

Monday tomorrow. Winds from the not pleasant on the North Sea coast. An

:11:27.:11:32.

east/ west split tomorrow, the line is probably around Birmingham.

:11:33.:11:35.

Everywhere to the east of that will be cool, the yellow covers here.

:11:36.:11:40.

West of that looking fine, a great day in Glasgow, everybody flocked to

:11:41.:11:46.

Glasgow, 24 or 5 degrees, a stunning day with sunshine.

:11:47.:11:49.

Into Monday, the high-pressure tries to build in but it does not want to

:11:50.:11:54.

know about it! The areas of low pressure and weather front started

:11:55.:11:58.

lining up, but before they do, Tuesday will be a decent day. The

:11:59.:12:04.

best day of the week overall across the UK, temperatures widely into the

:12:05.:12:08.

20s. The high-pressure moves far away out of the picture and instead

:12:09.:12:13.

it is hello lo, with weather fronts and outbreaks of rain. This is the

:12:14.:12:19.

forecast for Wednesday. It is almost like a wall of water heading our

:12:20.:12:23.

way. It will be quite heavy at times, the rainfall, cool and breezy

:12:24.:12:31.

so a bit soggy. Wednesday evening into Thursday, the weather fronts

:12:32.:12:35.

moves out into the North Sea, behind it we get a rush of fresh Atlantic

:12:36.:12:42.

air. A decent day on Thursday but a breezy with a bit of rain across

:12:43.:12:47.

some northern parts of Scotland. On Friday we are in the window of

:12:48.:12:52.

decent weather, but the next weather system starts to come in. It will be

:12:53.:12:57.

a pretty changeable week ahead, that is for sure. The wettest day will be

:12:58.:13:04.

Wednesday, and it will be cool. If

:13:05.:13:05.
