Good evening.

0:00:220:00:24

Criticism is growing of two former

police officers who leaked

0:00:240:00:28

allegations that legal pornographic

images had been found on a work

0:00:280:00:33

computer of the Cabinet

minister Damian Green.

0:00:330:00:34

The former Chief Constable

of Greater Manchester,

0:00:340:00:36

Sir Peter Fahy, strongly rejected

suggestions it was in the public

0:00:360:00:39

interest to disclose information

allegedly found during the course

0:00:390:00:41

of an unrelated

investigation in 2008.

0:00:410:00:44

Sir Peter said in his view

the officers were entering

0:00:440:00:47

"dangerous territory".

0:00:470:00:48

Here's our Political

Correspondent, Alex Forsyth.

0:00:480:00:53

Nine years ago, a police operation

that had unforeseen consequences.

0:00:530:00:58

This raid was part of an inquiry

into government leaks.

0:00:580:01:04

No one was charged,

but computers were seized

0:01:040:01:06

and examined.

0:01:060:01:08

And on Damian Green's work

computer there was allegedly

0:01:080:01:16

legal pornography which he has

repeatedly said wasn't down to

0:01:160:01:18

him.

0:01:180:01:19

The claims were first made public

by former Met Assistant

0:01:190:01:22

Commissioner Bob Quick,

who feared they would be covered up.

0:01:220:01:24

Then yesterday this

retired Met detective

0:01:240:01:26

also spoke out, saying he had no

doubt Mr Green viewed the material.

0:01:260:01:31

It's ridiculous to suggest that

anybody else could have done it.

0:01:310:01:35

He had examined the computer

and thought it was in the public

0:01:350:01:38

interest to reveal

what he had found.

0:01:380:01:43

The computer was in Mr Green's

office, on his desk.

0:01:430:01:47

Logged in, his account, his name.

0:01:470:01:50

But today the former

Chief Constable of Greater

0:01:500:01:52

Manchester Police condemned

the pair's actions.

0:01:520:01:55

Most police officers would be very

uncomfortable about the

0:01:550:01:59

police getting involved in making

judgments about whether a politician

0:01:590:02:01

is lying or not.

0:02:010:02:03

That is ultimately a matter

for the courts and for public

0:02:030:02:05

opinion.

0:02:050:02:07

Or breaching this duty of keeping

matters confidential,

0:02:070:02:09

which are gathered

in an investigation

0:02:090:02:10

unless they end up as evidence.

0:02:100:02:16

I didn't download or

look at pornography.

0:02:160:02:18

Damian Green has always

denied the claims.

0:02:180:02:20

His conduct is currently

subject to a Cabinet

0:02:200:02:21

Office investigation, the outcome

crucial.

0:02:210:02:24

He is a close ally of Theresa May.

0:02:240:02:27

How she deals with this

will be closely watched.

0:02:270:02:31

So questions now, not

just over his political

0:02:310:02:33

future but the handling

of this whole affair.

0:02:330:02:40

Alex is in Downing Street this

evening. In the past half-hour we

0:02:400:02:45

have had a statement from the Chief

Inspector of Constabulary, Sir

0:02:450:02:49

Thomas Windsor. What does he say?

He's issued a statement in which he

0:02:490:02:55

effectively says the public confer

special trust on the police to keep

0:02:550:02:58

confidential anything they discover

in the course of investigations. He

0:02:580:03:02

that does not end when police

officers retire. He is effectively

0:03:020:03:07

criticising the actions of these two

retired officers. But does not mean

0:03:070:03:11

there will be further repercussions,

nonetheless he is whose word will be

0:03:110:03:23

listened to. That is one aspect of

this. The other is the conduct of

0:03:230:03:26

Damian Green. Theresa May could

receive a report about that within

0:03:260:03:28

the next few days and then it will

be up to her to decide what action

0:03:280:03:32

to take. Weighing up the fact that

she will not want to lose her de

0:03:320:03:34

facto Deputy Prime Minister, a close

Cabinet ally, with the need to be

0:03:340:03:37

seen to assert authority in this

situation. So while it is Damian

0:03:370:03:41

Green's actions which are under

investigation, the actions of

0:03:410:03:44

Theresa May will be just as closely

scrutinised.

Alex, thank you. Alex

0:03:440:03:50

Forsyth in Downing Street.

0:03:500:03:54

In the United States -

the Senate has passed

0:03:540:03:56

a sweeping tax reform bill,

clearing the way for the first big

0:03:560:03:59

legislative achievement

of Donald Trump's presidency.

0:03:590:04:01

The plan includes a sharp cut

in corporation tax and reductions

0:04:010:04:03

for some individuals; it's estimated

the measures will add more

0:04:030:04:06

than a trillion dollars

to the budget deficit.

0:04:060:04:08

From Washington, Laura

Bicker has the story.

0:04:080:04:13

Finally Donald Trump is on course

for a much-needed win. It looks like

0:04:130:04:17

he will claim a victory on tax

reform.

We passed the largest tax

0:04:170:04:24

cuts in the history of our country

and many other things along with it.

0:04:240:04:30

The vote was close, the arm-twisting

continued until dawn. There were so

0:04:300:04:34

many last-minute changes that

senators had to scramble them in the

0:04:340:04:38

margins. Democrats say the package

will benefit big business and the

0:04:380:04:42

wealthy but Republicans believe it

will slash corporation taxes and

0:04:420:04:47

help the middle classes. For

Republicans and the President tax

0:04:470:04:51

bill was a welcome distraction from

the other Washington drama. Donald

0:04:510:05:01

Trump's former national Security

adviser Michael Flynn pleading

0:05:010:05:04

guilty to lying to the FBI about his

meetings with Russians. The former

0:05:040:05:08

three star general had played a key

part in Donald Trump 's campaign and

0:05:080:05:12

lead this chant about his rival,

Hillary Clinton, which will live in

0:05:120:05:18

infamy.

If I did one tenth of what

she did, I would be in jail today.

0:05:180:05:25

In court Mr Flynn apologised for

lying about his meetings with

0:05:250:05:29

Russians. But more worryingly for

the White House prosecutors say that

0:05:290:05:33

he will testify that he was told to

contact Russia by the Trump team of

0:05:330:05:38

officials, one of whom is believed

to be the President's son-in-law

0:05:380:05:43

Jared Kushner. But the president

remains defiant.

What has been shown

0:05:430:05:48

is no collusion. No collusion. There

has been absolutely no are very

0:05:480:05:52

happy.

President Trump has treated

that he fired general Flynn because

0:05:520:05:58

of his lies and said it was a shame

because his actions were not

0:05:580:06:02

unlawful and he had nothing to hide.

This should have been a momentous

0:06:020:06:07

day for Mr Trump. After all

Republicans finally united behind

0:06:070:06:12

tax reform. But instead the spectre

of this Russian investigation

0:06:120:06:16

continues to loom over the White

House. Laura Bicker, BBC News,

0:06:160:06:20

Washington.

0:06:200:06:24

Barclays Bank says it will no longer

offer Russian anti-virus software

0:06:240:06:26

free of charge to its customers.

0:06:260:06:28

It comes after officials

recommended that government

0:06:280:06:29

departments stop using Kaspersky Lab

products because of fears they could

0:06:290:06:34

be exploited by the Kremlin.

0:06:340:06:36

The National Cyber Security Centre

says the advice doesn't

0:06:360:06:38

apply to domestic users.

0:06:380:06:39

Kaspersky Lab denies any links

to the Russian government.

0:06:390:06:49

Our Business Correspondent

Joe Lynam is here ...

0:06:490:06:51

What more can you tell us?

0:06:510:06:54

Hundreds of thousands of customers

have this software.

For the software

0:06:540:06:58

to work it must have access to

hundreds of thousands of files to

0:06:580:07:02

protect from malware. Yet the

National Security Council believes

0:07:020:07:04

that in itself may be exposed to

Russian hacking, potentially from

0:07:040:07:08

the Kremlin. They have written to a

public sector body, as you say,

0:07:080:07:12

saying, we don't think you should

use this software. Get Barclays has

0:07:120:07:16

gone further. It is written to its

new users, it is written to the

0:07:160:07:28

290,000 people who already have this

software, saying, this is the

0:07:280:07:30

advice, we won't be giving this out

to new customers. However, the bank

0:07:300:07:33

and the National cyber Security

Centre are stressing not to

0:07:330:07:36

instantly uninstall the software

less it exposes you to the malware

0:07:360:07:42

unless you have got new antivirus

software in place. We are

0:07:420:07:48

disappointed, they say, that

Barclays has discontinued offering

0:07:480:07:55

Kaspersky Lab software, note that

the national cyber Security council

0:07:550:08:00

is not cancelling business against

using Kaspersky Lab software.

Thank

0:08:000:08:06

you Joe.

0:08:060:08:08

Cricket news.

0:08:080:08:09

Australia will be the happier

of the two sides at the close of day

0:08:090:08:14

one of the second Ashes Test.

0:08:140:08:15

Craig Overton made

a superb start in Adelaide

0:08:150:08:19

to his England Test career.

0:08:190:08:20

He claimed the wicket of Australia

captain Steve Smith on his

0:08:200:08:23

debut.

0:08:230:08:24

After being put in to bat,

the hosts eventually closed a

0:08:240:08:27

rain-interrupted day on 209-4.

0:08:270:08:28

England's first Rugby League World

Cup final since 1995 has

0:08:280:08:31

ended in a disappointing

defeat to Australia.

0:08:310:08:34

They were narrowly beaten 6-0

by the hosts in Brisbane,

0:08:340:08:37

who are crowned world champions

for the 11th time.

0:08:370:08:39

Adam Wild reports.

0:08:390:08:44

When you've come so far,

got so close, defeat can

0:08:440:08:47

feel almost unbearable.

0:08:470:08:48

But sometimes you have

to go that distance

0:08:480:08:50

to show just how far you've come.

0:08:500:08:55

For England, a first

Rugby League World Cup final

0:08:550:08:57

in more than 20 years,

but against Australia in Australia,

0:08:570:08:59

there is no tougher test.

0:08:590:09:04

COMMENTATOR: England hope for glory.

0:09:040:09:05

Australia expects.

0:09:050:09:06

From the very first,

this was always a battle,

0:09:060:09:09

brutal at times.

0:09:090:09:10

James Graham here feeling the full

force and bearing the early scars.

0:09:100:09:13

With the stakes so high,

0:09:130:09:16

the scoreline remained

frustratingly low.

0:09:160:09:18

Boyd Cordner the only

one to break through,

0:09:180:09:23

Australia ahead by

the very tightest margin

0:09:230:09:24

but England unable

to close that gap.

0:09:240:09:28

Their World Cup summed up perfectly

in one agonising moment.

0:09:280:09:31

Kallum Watkins finally

clear, a huge chance

0:09:310:09:39

but falling painfully short

with the very faintest final touch.

0:09:390:09:41

Those England players sink

to their knees,

0:09:410:09:43

but it is Australia

who are world champions again.

0:09:430:09:45

Come a long way the last few years,

certainly very disappointing,
