Criticism grows of two former

policemen who claimed legal

0:00:040:00:08

pornographic images were found

on the computer of Damian Green.

0:00:080:00:13

The cabinet minister has always

strongly denied the allegations -

0:00:130:00:15

a former Chief Constable suggests

it was wrong that

0:00:150:00:17

details were leaked.

0:00:170:00:21

Most police officers will be very

uncomfortable about the police

0:00:210:00:27

getting involved in making

judgements about whether

0:00:270:00:29

a politician is lying or not,

that is ultimately a matter

0:00:290:00:31

for the courts or

for public opinion.

0:00:310:00:33

Also on the programme.

A new tweet from President Trump

raises more questions tonight

0:00:340:00:37

about the sacking of his former

national security advisor.

0:00:370:00:41

England's first Rugby League World

Cup final since 1995

0:00:410:00:44

ends in a disappointing

defeat to Australia.

0:00:440:00:49

And the remarkable story

of the eight-week old baby who's

0:00:490:00:51

received a heart transplant.

0:00:510:00:55

Good evening.

0:01:100:01:14

Criticism is growing of two former

police officers who leaked

0:01:140:01:17

allegations that legal pornographic

images had been found on a work

0:01:170:01:20

computer of the Cabinet

minister, Damian Green.

0:01:200:01:23

The former chief constable

of Greater Manchester,

0:01:230:01:26

Sir Peter Fahy, strongly rejected

suggestions it was in the public

0:01:260:01:29

interest to disclose information

allegedly found during the course

0:01:290:01:32

of an unrelated

investigation in 2008.

0:01:320:01:35

Sir Peter said in his view

the officers were entering

0:01:350:01:37

"dangerous territory".

0:01:370:01:38

Here's our political

correspondent, Alex Forsyth.

0:01:380:01:44

Nine years ago, a police operation

that had unforeseen consequences.

0:01:440:01:48

This raid was part of an inquiry

into government leaks.

0:01:480:01:53

No one was charged but computers

were seized and examined.

0:01:530:01:58

And on Damian Green's work computer

there was allegedly legal

0:01:580:02:02

pornography which he has repeatedly

said wasn't down to him.

0:02:020:02:06

The claims were first

made public by former

0:02:060:02:09

Met Assistant Commissioner,

Bob Quick, who feared

0:02:090:02:11

they would be covered up.

0:02:110:02:16

Yesterday, this retired Met

detective also spoke out,

0:02:160:02:18

saying he had no doubt that Mr Green

viewed the material.

0:02:180:02:22

It was ridiculous to suggest that

anyone else could have done it.

0:02:220:02:26

He'd examined the computer

and thought it was in the public

0:02:260:02:29

interest to reveal what he'd found.

0:02:290:02:35

The computer was in Mr Green's

office, on his desk, logged in,

0:02:350:02:37

it was his account and his name.

0:02:370:02:40

But today, the former

Chief Constable of Greater

0:02:400:02:43

Manchester Police condemned

the pair's actions.

0:02:430:02:47

Most police officers would be very

uncomfortable about the police

0:02:470:02:51

getting involved in making judgments

about whether a politician is lying

0:02:510:02:54

or not - that is ultimately

a matter for the courts

0:02:540:02:56

and for public opinion.

0:02:560:02:58

Or breaching this duty of keeping

matters confidential,

0:02:580:03:00

which are gathered in

an investigation unless

0:03:000:03:02

they end up as evidence.

0:03:020:03:04

I didn't download or

look at pornography.

0:03:040:03:06

Damian Green has always

denied the claims.

0:03:060:03:08

His conduct is currently subject

to a Cabinet Office investigation.

0:03:080:03:13

The outcome crucial.

0:03:130:03:15

He's a close ally of Theresa May.

0:03:150:03:17

How she deals with this

will be closely watched.

0:03:170:03:20

So questions now, not

just over his political

0:03:200:03:21

future, but the handling

of this whole affair.

0:03:210:03:23

Alex Forsyth, BBC News, Westminster.

0:03:230:03:29

Alex joins me now.

0:03:290:03:31

The Chief Inspector Sir Thomas

Windsor has issued a statement about

0:03:310:03:37

these policemen, what does he make

of it?

He says police are given

0:03:370:03:42

special powers by the public and

that is a matter of trust, if they

0:03:420:03:47

get information in their

investigation, they will keep it,

0:03:470:03:51

dental, and what he says, in order

to maintain that trust -- they will

0:03:510:03:54

keep it confidential. He says they

should maintain that confidentiality

0:03:540:03:58

even after retirement, and even

those these police officers thought

0:03:580:04:02

it was in the public interest, he

seems to be suggesting they were

0:04:020:04:06

wrong to do so. The other aspect is

Damian Green's conduct, Theresa May

0:04:060:04:11

is expected to receive the report

into that within the next few days

0:04:110:04:15

and she will have to decide on a

course of action. It will be

0:04:150:04:18

informed by the contents of that

report but there will be an element

0:04:180:04:23

of judgment, weighing up the facts,

she won't want to lose a close ally,

0:04:230:04:27

her de facto Deputy Prime Minister

with the need to be seen to take a

0:04:270:04:30

firm line. While Damian Green is

under investigation, Theresa May's

0:04:300:04:35

actions will be very closely

scrutinised, as well.

Alex, thanks

0:04:350:04:38

for joining us.

0:04:380:04:40

President Trump is insisting

the former national security

0:04:400:04:45

advisor Michael Flynn did

nothing wrong during the

0:04:450:04:47

presidential transition.

0:04:470:04:48

But in one of his latest tweets

the President writes that

0:04:480:04:50

General Flynn was fired because he'd

lied to the vice-president -

0:04:500:04:53

and the FBI.

0:04:530:04:54

It raises new questions.

0:04:540:04:57

Did the President know General Flynn

had lied to federal investigators,

0:04:570:04:59

when he asked the bureau's

then-director to drop the inquiry.

0:04:590:05:02

From Washington Laura

Bicker reports.

0:05:020:05:06

Donald Trump's started the day on a

bullish note, he is on course for a

0:05:060:05:12

much-needed win on tax reform, he

brushed aside questions about his

0:05:120:05:16

former national security adviser

lying to the FBI over his meetings

0:05:160:05:20

with Russians.

What has been shown

is no collusion, no collusion, there

0:05:200:05:27

has been absolutely no collusion, so

we are very happy.

But then he

0:05:270:05:33

issued another controversial tweet,

one that could cause him a real

0:05:330:05:37

headache. He said he had fired

Michael Flynn because he lied to the

0:05:370:05:42

vice president and the FBI.

0:05:420:05:45

Many people are asking why Michael

Flynn, a former three star general,

0:05:540:05:57

did not tell the truth to the FBI

about his meetings with the Russian

0:05:570:06:01

ambassador, as the president said,

his actions were not against the

0:06:010:06:04

law, but Donald Trump's tweet leads

to a bigger question, did you know

0:06:040:06:10

Michael Flynn have lied to the FBI?

This is a problem because a former

0:06:100:06:16

head of the FBI James Comey has

testified under oath that the

0:06:160:06:19

president asked him to drop an

investigation into Michael Flynn.

0:06:190:06:25

Legal analysts are now wondering if

the president was trying to stop an

0:06:250:06:30

inquiry into his former adviser,

knowing he was guilty, in other

0:06:300:06:35

words, was he trying to obstruct

justice?

On this boat, -- vote, 51

0:06:350:06:45

in favour and 49 against.

It should

have been a momentous day for Donald

0:06:450:06:51

Trump, the Republicans had finally

united by a tax bill, welcome

0:06:510:06:55

distraction and at last a

legislative victory. But now, once

0:06:550:06:59

again, because of a tweak, the

American president is embroiled in a

0:06:590:07:03

controversy over Russian meddling in

the US election, a controversy that

0:07:030:07:10

continues to loom over the White

House.

0:07:100:07:13

And Laura is live in Washington now.

0:07:130:07:17

Has the president confirms something

inadvertently might just land him in

0:07:170:07:19

hot that water?

He might well have

done that. After a day that started

0:07:190:07:26

so well, he was on course for a

major legislative victory on tax

0:07:260:07:31

reform which he has been campaigning

for since he took office. He had

0:07:310:07:35

already made a brief statement on

Michael Flynn, saying there was no

0:07:350:07:38

collusion, so far so good, and then

came that tweet which has raised so

0:07:380:07:43

many questions, did President Trump

know Michael Flynn was guilty of

0:07:430:07:48

lying to the FBI when he fired him?

And if he tried to prevent the FBI

0:07:480:07:54

investigation with that knowledge?

Legal analysis believe that he

0:07:540:07:59

could... This tweet could come back

to haunt in and it could just be a

0:07:590:08:04

way that he has written it, a simple

mistake, but certainly it could land

0:08:040:08:08

him in hot water. This is an example

of how to snatch defeat from the

0:08:080:08:13

jaws of victory. President Trump

could have switched focus on two

0:08:130:08:17

Republican success, but instead

attention is where he doesn't want

0:08:170:08:21

it to be, back on that Russian

inquiry.

Laura in Washington, thank

0:08:210:08:27

you.

0:08:270:08:29

A 14-year-old boy, who was hit

by a car on a motorway,

0:08:290:08:32

has died in hospital.

0:08:320:08:33

Police say Samuel Berkley

was found unconscious

0:08:330:08:36

on the hard shoulder of the M67

in Greater Manchester last night.

0:08:360:08:39

Officers believe he was struck

by a car and have appealed

0:08:390:08:42

for witnesses to come forward.

0:08:420:08:45

Barclays Bank has stopped offering

free anti-virus software

0:08:450:08:47

from a Russian company

to its online banking customers.

0:08:470:08:50

It follows an official government

warning that Russian

0:08:500:08:51

security software could be

exploited by Moscow.

0:08:510:08:55

The company, Kaspersky Lab, has

denied any links to the Kremlin.

0:08:550:09:02

Police in Germany have fired water

cannon at anti-fascist demonstrators

0:09:020:09:05

They were protesting outside

the party conference

The AfD won nearly 13% of the vote

in the September elections,

0:09:110:09:14

becoming the third biggest

force in the Bundestag.

With all the sport -

here's Olly Foster at

0:09:190:09:21

the BBC Sport Centre.

0:09:210:09:24

Good evening.

0:09:240:09:30

England coach Wayne Bennett says he

was proud of his team as they came

0:09:300:09:33

desperately close to winning

the Rugby League World Cup.

0:09:330:09:36

Australia are champions again

but there was only one try

0:09:360:09:38

in the final as the Kangeroos won

6-0 in Brisbane.

0:09:380:09:41

Adam Wild reports.

0:09:410:09:42

When you've come so far,

got so close, defeat can

0:09:420:09:44

feel almost unbearable.

0:09:440:09:46

But sometimes you have to go

that distance to show

0:09:460:09:49

just how far you've come.

0:09:490:09:50

For England a first

Rugby League World Cup final

0:09:500:09:52

in more than 20 years.

0:09:520:09:55

But no tougher test

than against Australia in Australia.

0:09:550:09:58

COMMENTATOR:

England hope

for glory, Australia expects.

0:09:580:10:02

From the very first, this was always

a battle, brutal at times.

0:10:020:10:06

James Graham feeling the full force

and bearing the early scars.

0:10:060:10:09

With the stakes so high

the scoreline remained

0:10:090:10:11

frustratingly low.

0:10:110:10:13

Boyd Cordner the only

one to break through.

0:10:130:10:17

Australia ahead by the very

tightest margin but England

0:10:170:10:19

unable to close that gap.

0:10:190:10:24

Their World Cup summed up perfectly

in one agonising moment.

0:10:240:10:27

Kallum Watkins, finally clear.

0:10:270:10:29

A huge chance but falling

painfully short with the very

0:10:290:10:31

faintest final touch.

0:10:310:10:35

COMMENTATOR:

Those English players

sink to their knees.

0:10:350:10:38

But it is Australia

who are world champions again.

0:10:380:10:43

We've come a long way

the last few years.

0:10:430:10:45

Very disappointing but we have

to move from this.

0:10:450:10:47

The pain of defeat will

eventually subside.

0:10:470:10:50

To get so close, England have shown

how far they've come but to match

0:10:500:10:54

the mighty Australians,

England still have just

0:10:540:10:55

a little further to go.

0:10:550:10:57

Adam Wild, BBC News.

0:10:570:11:02

There are 22 Premier League

0:11:040:11:06

But if you want the results

now, here they come.

0:11:060:11:08

Manchester United are now five

points off the top of the table

0:11:080:11:11

after beating Arsenal 3-1

Paul Pogba sent off.

0:11:150:11:18

David De Gea equalled a Premier

League record with 14 saves.

0:11:180:11:27

Leaders Manchester City

face West Ham tomorrow.

0:11:270:11:29

Chelsea are still third,

they beat Newcastle 3-1.

0:11:290:11:31

It was 5-1 to Liverpool at Brighton,

they are up to 4th.

0:11:310:11:34

Sam Allardyce's first match

in charge of Everton saw

0:11:340:11:36

them beat Huddersfield.

0:11:360:11:37

Their were wins for Leicester

and Stoke, Spurs drew at Watford

0:11:370:11:40

and Alan Pardew's first match

at West Brom finished goaless

0:11:400:11:42

against Crystal Palace.

0:11:420:11:43

Celtic are seven points clear at

the top of the Scottish Premiership.

0:11:430:11:46

Teenager Odsonne Eduard scored

a hatrick in their 5-1 win

0:11:460:11:48

against Mothwerwell.

0:11:480:11:49

Hearts and Hamilton drew but Hibs,

Dundee and Kilmarnock

0:11:490:11:52

all had away wins.

0:11:520:11:53

The second Ashes Test is under way.

0:11:530:11:55

England, who are one

down in the series, won

0:11:550:11:57

the toss but surprisingly

chose to bowl first

0:11:570:11:59

and Australia closed on 209-4.

0:12:110:12:19

Joe Root put Australia

into bat, risky.

0:12:190:12:26

As the hosts cruised,

it did not look a great decision.

0:12:260:12:29

After a rain delay England found

an unlikely breakthrough.

0:12:290:12:37

Misfield, a pick-up

and a bullseye from Woakes.

0:12:370:12:38

And Cameron Bancroft

rolled out for ten.

0:12:380:12:43

Woakes induced the David Warner

waft, the temperature began rising.

0:12:430:12:45

New batsman Steve Smith and Stuart

0:12:450:12:49

England were barely clinging

on, but a state-owned

tonight, enter Anderson.

0:12:540:12:56

COMMENTATOR:

And Anderson strikes!

0:12:560:12:58

What followed was even better

as debutant Craig Overton did this

0:12:580:13:00

to the world's number one batsman.

0:13:000:13:02

Smith out for 40.

0:13:020:13:03

Easy this Test cricket, isn't it?

0:13:030:13:08

But soon England were reminded it's

anything but as Australia

0:13:080:13:11

passed 200 before the close.

0:13:110:13:13

The hosts have their noses in front.

But for Craig Overton it was a

0:13:130:13:19

Thursday and wicked to remember. --

first day and a wicket to remember.

0:13:190:13:26

We are happy, we

bowled well all day.

0:13:260:13:28

We did not get the rewards,

but we will come back tomorrow

0:13:280:13:31

with the new ball and hopefully get

a couple of early ones.

0:13:310:13:33

England will be frustrated they are

not in a stronger position. On the

0:13:330:13:39

second day they need wickets and

quickly.

Wales have finished their Rugby

From going so blue, he was just blue

all the time, to being so pink

0:15:030:15:07

and peachy and perfect.

Charlie was the youngest

patient on Britain's

0:15:100:15:11

transplant waiting list.

0:15:110:15:14

His doctors say the

operation went well.

0:15:140:15:18

He was extremely lucky,

considering his condition,

0:15:180:15:23

and his size, to get a heart,

a suitable donor heart, on time.

0:15:230:15:29

It's not known if the family

who donated their baby's

0:15:290:15:31

heart know about Charlie.

0:15:310:15:34

But Charlie's mother says they've

given her a precious gift.

0:15:340:15:39

It's the bravest thing

anyone could do.

0:15:390:15:42

They've given my boy

a second chance at life.

0:15:420:15:45

And for that I will

be forever thankful.

0:15:450:15:48

I cried for them.

0:15:480:15:57

Charlie is expected to be strong

enough to go home in the New Year.

0:15:570:16:04

An unbearable loss in one

family, that became

0:16:040:16:06

unrestrained joy in another.
