Good evening.

A man has appeared in court charged

with the murder of a woman working

0:00:210:00:25

at an Aldi supermarket in North

Yorkshire.

0:00:250:00:27

Neville Hord, who's 44,

was remanded in custody

0:00:270:00:29

by magistrates in York.

0:00:290:00:32

Jodie Willsher was stabbed to death

in Skipton on Thursday.

0:00:320:00:35

Our correspondent Sarah

Walton sent this report.

0:00:350:00:44

Arriving at York Magistrates' Court,

44-year-old Neville Hord appeared in

0:00:440:00:48

the dock charged with murder. He is

accused of attacking 30-year-old

0:00:480:00:52

Jodie Willsher at the Aldi store in

Skipton where she was working on

0:00:520:01:00

Thursday afternoon. She received

serious injuries and died at the

0:01:000:01:03

scene. There were no relatives in

court this morning, and Neville

0:01:030:01:08

Hord, dressed in a blue T-shirt and

grey shorts, spoke only to confirm

0:01:080:01:11

his name, age and address. He didn't

enter a plea and was remanded in

0:01:110:01:15

custody. In a statement, Mrs

Wilshire's husband Malcolm said his

0:01:150:01:21

wife always had an amazing smile on

her face and was a doting mother and

0:01:210:01:26

loving wife. At the store where

Jodie Willsher work, colleagues have

0:01:260:01:31

described her as much loved and

popular. Staff returned to the store

0:01:310:01:35

tonight, but the store remains

closed. People have been arriving to

0:01:350:01:39

meet flowers and messages for Jodie

Willsher, a popular member of staff.

0:01:390:01:45

One regular shopper delivered a card

for the workers who lost a loved

0:01:450:01:48

colleague.

People who shop here shop

regularly, and they know the star.

0:01:480:01:55

The staff are so good. The manager

is always so helpful. -- they know

0:01:550:02:05

the staff. Neville Hord will next

appear at Leeds Crown Court on the

0:02:050:02:08

28th of December.

0:02:080:02:13

At least 200 people have died

after a tropical storm

0:02:130:02:15

struck the southern Philippines.

0:02:150:02:16

The country's second

largest island - Mindanao -

0:02:160:02:18

bore the brunt of the storm,

which caused flash

0:02:180:02:20

floods and landslides.

0:02:200:02:21

One entire village has

been completely buried.

0:02:210:02:23

Andy Moore reports.

0:02:230:02:26

Clinging to the neck

of his rescuer, a young

0:02:260:02:28

boy is carried across

the

0:02:280:02:29

floodwaters.

0:02:290:02:31

There was little sign

of official help here, just

0:02:310:02:33

villagers doing their best to rescue

each other with fragile ropes.

0:02:330:02:36

In a country used to

devastating storms,

0:02:360:02:38

this took many by surprise.

0:02:380:02:43

The authorities said

too many people had

0:02:430:02:44

ignored warnings to leave coastal

areas and river banks.

0:02:440:02:47

Many of the casualties

were on the main southern

0:02:470:02:49

island.

0:02:490:02:54

This man said houses were getting

flooded but people couldn't

0:02:540:02:57

escape, so they got

caught in the strong

0:02:570:02:59

currents and swept away.

0:02:590:03:01

Many places were hit by landslides.

0:03:010:03:04

Flimsy houses were buried

beneath tonnes of debris.

0:03:040:03:07

The Red Cross is helping

coordinate the relief

0:03:070:03:09

effort.

0:03:090:03:17

We have already provided water

and food, and we have been

0:03:170:03:20

distributing non-food items,

blankets, mosquito nets and hygiene

0:03:200:03:23

kits for those who

are in the evacuation

0:03:230:03:28

centres to alleviate

the

0:03:280:03:30

suffering of many

of the folks there.

0:03:300:03:36

The Philippines is battered

by about 20 typhoons every year.

0:03:360:03:39

This particular storm

is not over yet.

0:03:390:03:44

It's now heading towards the popular

tourist island of Palawan.

0:03:440:03:49

As it passes over warm, tropical

waters, its winds are set to grow

0:03:490:03:52

again in strength.

0:03:520:03:53

Andy Moore, BBC News.

0:03:530:03:56

The Transport Secretary,

Chris Grayling, says the Government

0:03:560:03:58

is consulting on a new system

of road charging for

0:03:580:04:00

heavy goods lorries.

0:04:000:04:01

Drivers would be charged per mile,

in a move that replaced

0:04:010:04:04

some existing taxes.

0:04:040:04:07

There are no plans for a similar

system for private cars.

0:04:070:04:09

Our transport correspondent, Richard

0:04:090:04:10

Westcott, is here.

0:04:100:04:12

What's the thinking behind this?

0:04:120:04:16

The Government argues it might make

things more fair, so they get a lot

0:04:160:04:20

of complaints from British hauliers

saying, foreign companies can come

0:04:200:04:25

over with a full tank of fuel and

they won't have paid a lot of duty

0:04:250:04:28

on it, work for a couple of days and

go home, and they are not

0:04:280:04:31

contributing enough to the upkeep of

the roads, because lorries do a lot

0:04:310:04:34

of damage to the road. They suggest

this could be a fairer way of doing

0:04:340:04:39

it - get rid of all the other taxes

and charge per mile. The hauliers

0:04:390:04:43

argue it is an excuse to charge

them. The bigger question is, is

0:04:430:04:50

this the tip of the iceberg? People

are thinking, if it goes well for

0:04:500:04:54

trucks, maybe they will bring in

toll roads for ordinary people, cars

0:04:540:04:58

and vans. I can't see that

happening, and the Government flatly

0:04:580:05:01

deny they are looking at that today.

People watching this will think that

0:05:010:05:07

ten years ago, Tony Blair tried to

do that, try to bring in toll roads

0:05:070:05:11

and nearly 2 million people signed a

petition against it. There were News

0:05:110:05:15

campaigns and outrage. It is a brave

Government that will talk about toll

0:05:150:05:19

roads for ordinary drivers.

0:05:190:05:20

London Zoo has been closed today

after a fire in the early

0:05:200:05:23

hours of the morning.

0:05:230:05:24

A number of staff were treated

at the scene for smoke

0:05:240:05:27

inhalation and shock,

as the blaze was brought under

0:05:270:05:29

control by 70 firefighters.

0:05:290:05:30

Adina Campbell reports.

0:05:300:05:37

Rising flames and large plumes of

smoke were captured on social media

0:05:370:05:41

just before dawn. The fire started

in the animal adventure cafe and

0:05:410:05:44

then spread to a nearby shop. At its

height more than 70 firefighters

0:05:440:05:50

dealt with the fire and brought it

under control just after 9am. One

0:05:500:05:57

person was taken to hospital and

eight others were treated at the

0:05:570:06:01

scene for smoke inhalation and minor

injuries.

This is quite a complex

0:06:010:06:07

site, and we've had to put certain

cordons in place for safety, because

0:06:070:06:13

the building has been so seriously

damaged.

Vets at the zoo confirmed

0:06:130:06:18

that a nine-year-old aardvark called

Misha died in the fire. Four missing

0:06:180:06:25

meerkats are also thought to have

been killed.

We are all really upset

0:06:250:06:30

by this incident, because this is

one of our most loved animals in the

0:06:300:06:33

zoo, Misha and the meerkats are also

held in great affection by all of us

0:06:330:06:41

who work here run by those who love

London zoo.

For those who turned up

0:06:410:06:46

today, it wasn't the Christmas visit

they had hoped for.

We travelled

0:06:460:06:50

down from Nottingham today.

That

must be disappointing.

It is a bit,

0:06:500:06:55

but as long as the animals are OK.

We are very disappointed, we came

0:06:550:07:00

from a long way, from Brazil, to see

it. And sad. Poor animals.

Some of

0:07:000:07:06

the staff who live on site here were

called to the scene immediately and

0:07:060:07:10

started moving the animals to

safety. Today, the zoo has been

0:07:100:07:14

closed. It would normally have been

a very busy day, being so close to

0:07:140:07:22

Christmas. Tonight, staff have

confirmed that the zoo will be open

0:07:220:07:25

tomorrow. Three quarters of the cafe

and shop has been affected by the

0:07:250:07:28

fire, as well as have the roof. The

cause is still unclear.

0:07:280:07:33

Leon Bernicoff, one

of the stars of the TV show

0:07:330:07:35

Gogglebox has died at the age of 83.

0:07:350:07:38

The retired teacher

and his wife June were one

0:07:380:07:40

of the first couples to join

the Channel 4 programme

0:07:400:07:42

when it launched in 2013.

0:07:420:07:44

The broadcaster said he died

in hospital after a short illness.

0:07:440:07:50

California's deadly wildfire has

now become the largest

0:07:500:07:52

in the state's recorded history.

0:07:520:07:54

The blaze, which has

been burning for more

0:07:540:07:56

than two weeks, has scorched

0:07:560:07:57

an area greater than New York City,

Brussels and Paris combined.

0:07:570:08:01

Among those tackling the flames

are thousands of prisoners,

0:08:010:08:03

some of whom have been given

a new sense of purpose by the work,

0:08:030:08:06

as our correspondent

James Cook reports.

0:08:060:08:12

It's pretty challenging.

0:08:120:08:14

Sometimes we're right there,

right next to the fire.

0:08:140:08:18

Compared to being in prison

and being here, it's

0:08:180:08:21

completely different.

0:08:210:08:24

Here you feel free.

0:08:240:08:24

You're out in the world.

0:08:240:08:28

The biggest change for me is mental,

because I've never pushed myself

0:08:280:08:31

as hard, ever in life.

0:08:310:08:39

California has 4,000 inmate

firefighters, men and women.

0:08:390:08:49

Cutting firebreaks is risky work -

two have died this year.

0:08:490:08:52

But there are rewards too in reduced

sentences and a sense of purpose.

0:08:520:08:59

After being in this programme,

I feel like I've been rehabilitated,

0:08:590:09:02

and I feel like I can go out

there and achieve anything

0:09:020:09:05

I want to because I've done this.

0:09:050:09:06

This is so hard.

0:09:060:09:09

We were allowed inside this

prison camp in Malibu.

0:09:090:09:11

There are no walls or fences here.

0:09:110:09:14

Violent or volatile

prisoners are not allowed

0:09:140:09:16

to join the programme.

0:09:160:09:20

With a job like this, there is only

time to think about the work.

0:09:200:09:24

Latoya Najar is serving four years

for causing the death

0:09:240:09:26

of her seven-year-old son

in a drunken car crash.

0:09:260:09:28

The attraction for me

was because of my crime,

0:09:280:09:32

I could come out here

and do something positive.

0:09:320:09:35

It's challenging mentally

to get over something.

0:09:350:09:39

I'm never going to get over it,

but to try to ease my mind

0:09:390:09:43

and this has helped.

0:09:430:09:46

With California facing more frequent

and more destructive fires,

0:09:460:09:49

some critics call this slave labour.

0:09:490:09:54

But the project is voluntary,

it may reduce re-offending and it

0:09:540:09:56

provides some measure of redemption.

0:09:560:09:59

Everyone is like, "We love

you firefighters."

0:09:590:10:01

We all wave back and

we wave to the kids.

0:10:010:10:05

It's amazing, yes.
