More than 180 people

are killed as a tropical storm

0:00:050:00:07

batters the Philippines.

0:00:070:00:10

Flash floods bring devastation

to the south of the country.

0:00:100:00:13

Tens of thousands are forced

to leave their homes.

0:00:130:00:18

A man appears in court accused

of murdering a worker at an Aldi

0:00:180:00:22

supermarket in front of shoppers.

0:00:220:00:24

And California's deadly

wildfires, now the biggest

0:00:240:00:25

in the state's history.

0:00:250:00:31

Good evening.

0:00:470:00:48

The authorities in the Philippines

say more than one hundred and eighty

0:00:480:00:51

people have been killed in floods

and landslides triggered

0:00:510:00:53

by a major tropical storm.

0:00:530:00:55

Scores of people are missing

and tens of thousands have been

0:00:550:00:58

forced to leave their homes.

0:00:580:01:00

The country's second

0:01:000:01:01

largest island - Mindanao -

was worst affected.

0:01:010:01:04

Local officials say many residents

had ignored warnings to leave

0:01:040:01:06

vulnerable coastal areas.

0:01:060:01:08

Our correspondent Andy

Moore has the latest.

0:01:080:01:14

Clinging to the neck of his rescuer,

a young boy is carried

0:01:140:01:18

across the floodwaters.

0:01:180:01:20

There was little sign

of official help here,

0:01:200:01:22

just villagers doing their best

to rescue each other

0:01:220:01:25

with fragile ropes.

0:01:250:01:28

In a country used to devastating

storms, this took many by surprise.

0:01:280:01:32

The authorities said too many people

had ignored warnings to leave

0:01:320:01:35

coastal areas and river banks.

0:01:350:01:38

Many of the casualties were on the

main southern island, Mindanao.

0:01:380:01:44

This man said houses were getting

flooded but people couldn't escape,

0:01:440:01:47

so they got caught in the strong

currents and swept away.

0:01:470:01:52

Many places were hit by landslides.

0:01:520:01:55

Flimsy houses were buried

beneath tonnes of debris.

0:01:550:01:58

The Red Cross is helping

coordinate the relief effort.

0:01:580:02:02

We have already provided water

and food, and we have been

0:02:020:02:07

distributing non-food items,

blankets, mosquito nets

0:02:070:02:10

and hygiene kits for those

who are in the evacuation centres

0:02:100:02:14

to alleviate the suffering

of many of the folks there.

0:02:140:02:22

The Philippines is battered

by about 20 typhoons every year.

0:02:220:02:26

This particular storm

is not over yet.

0:02:260:02:29

It's now heading towards the popular

tourist island of Palawan.

0:02:290:02:33

As it passes over warm,

tropical waters, its winds are set

0:02:330:02:36

to grow again in strength.

0:02:360:02:37

Andy Moore, BBC News.

0:02:370:02:41

A man has appeared in court charged

with the murder of a woman working

0:02:430:02:46

at an Aldi supermarket in North

Yorkshire.

0:02:460:02:48

Neville Hord, who's 44,

was remanded in custody

0:02:480:02:50

by magistrates in York.

0:02:500:02:52

Jodie Willsher was stabbed to death

in Skipton on Thursday.

0:02:520:02:54

Our correspondent Sarah

Walton sent this report.

0:02:540:03:01

Arriving at York Magistrates' Court,

44-year-old Neville Hord appeared

0:03:010:03:03

in the dock charged with murder.

0:03:030:03:07

He is accused of attacking

30-year-old Jodie Willsher

0:03:070:03:09

at the Aldi store in Skipton

where she was working

0:03:090:03:11

on Thursday afternoon.

0:03:110:03:15

She suffered serious injuries

and died in the store.

0:03:150:03:19

There were no relatives in court

this morning, and Mr Hord,

0:03:190:03:22

dressed in a blue T-shirt and grey

shorts, spoke only to confirm his

0:03:220:03:25

name, age and address.

0:03:250:03:29

He didn't enter a plea

and was remanded in custody.

0:03:290:03:33

In a statement, Mrs Willsher's

husband Malcolm said his wife always

0:03:330:03:36

had an amazing smile on her face

and was a doting mother

0:03:360:03:39

and loving wife.

0:03:390:03:44

At the store where Mrs Willsher

worked, colleagues have

0:03:440:03:46

described her as much

loved and popular.

0:03:460:03:50

Staff returned to the store tonight,

but the store remains closed.

0:03:500:03:55

People have been arriving to leave

flowers and messages

0:03:550:03:57

for Mrs Willsher, a popular

member of staff.

0:03:570:04:02

One regular shopper delivered

a card for the workers

0:04:020:04:04

who lost a loved colleague.

0:04:040:04:08

People who shop here shop regularly,

and they know the staff.

0:04:080:04:13

The staff are so good.

0:04:130:04:14

The manager is always so helpful.

0:04:140:04:16

It just hurts people.

0:04:160:04:20

Mr Hord will next appear

at Leeds Crown Court

0:04:200:04:22

on the 28th of December.

0:04:220:04:23

Sarah Walton, BBC News, York.

0:04:230:04:28

London Zoo has been closed today

after a fire in the early

0:04:280:04:31

hours of the morning.

0:04:310:04:32

A number of staff were treated

at the scene for smoke

0:04:320:04:34

inhalation and shock,

as the blaze was brought under

0:04:340:04:37

control by 70 firefighters.

0:04:370:04:38

Adina Campbell reports.

0:04:380:04:42

Rising flames and large plumes

of smoke were captured on social

0:04:420:04:45

media just before dawn.

0:04:450:04:49

The fire started in the Animal

Adventure cafe and then

0:04:490:04:51

spread to a nearby shop.

0:04:510:04:55

At its height, more than 70

firefighters dealt with the fire

0:04:550:04:57

and brought it under control

just after 9am.

0:04:570:05:04

One person was taken to hospital

and eight others were treated

0:05:040:05:07

at the scene for smoke inhalation

and minor injuries.

0:05:070:05:12

This is quite a complex site,

and we've had to put certain cordons

0:05:120:05:15

in place for people's safety,

because the building has been

0:05:150:05:18

so seriously damaged.

0:05:180:05:24

Vets at the zoo confirmed that

a nine-year-old aardvark called

0:05:240:05:26

Misha died in the fire.

0:05:260:05:29

Four missing meerkats are also

thought to have been killed.

0:05:290:05:34

We are all really upset by this

incident, because this is one

0:05:340:05:37

of our most loved animals

in the zoo, Misha and the meerkats

0:05:370:05:40

are also held in great affection

by all of us who work

0:05:400:05:42

here and by those

who love London Zoo.

0:05:420:05:49

For those who turned up today,

it wasn't the Christmas

0:05:490:05:52

visit they had hoped for.

0:05:520:05:55

We travelled down

from Nottingham today.

0:05:550:05:57

That must be disappointing.

0:05:570:05:59

It is a bit, but as long

as the animals are OK.

0:05:590:06:03

We are very disappointed,

we came from a long way,

0:06:030:06:05

from Brazil, to see it.

0:06:050:06:07

And it's closed.

0:06:070:06:08

And sad.

0:06:080:06:09

Poor animals.

0:06:090:06:12

Some of the staff who live on site

here were called to the scene

0:06:120:06:15

immediately and started moving

the animals to safety.

0:06:150:06:18

Today, the zoo has been closed.

0:06:180:06:20

It would normally have

been a very busy day,

0:06:200:06:22

being so close to Christmas.

0:06:220:06:24

Tonight, staff have confirmed

that the zoo will be open tomorrow.

0:06:240:06:29

Three quarters of the cafe and shop

has been affected by the fire,

0:06:290:06:33

as well as half the roof.

0:06:330:06:35

The cause is still unclear.

0:06:350:06:36

Adina Campbell, BBC News.

0:06:360:06:39

The government is considering

a new system of road charging

0:06:420:06:44

for heavy goods lorries.

0:06:440:06:46

Drivers would be charged per mile,

0:06:460:06:47

in a move that replaced

some existing taxes.

0:06:470:06:49

There are no plans for a similar

system for private cars.

0:06:490:06:55

California's deadly wildfire has

now become the largest

0:06:550:06:57

in the state's recorded history.

0:06:570:07:00

The blaze which has been burning

for more than two weeks has scorched

0:07:000:07:03

an area greater than New York City,

Brussels and Paris combined.

0:07:030:07:08

Among those tackling the flames

are thousands of prisoners,

0:07:080:07:10

some of whom have been given

a new sense of purpose by the work,

0:07:100:07:13

as our correspondent

James Cook reports.

0:07:130:07:19

It's pretty challenging.

0:07:190:07:20

Sometimes we're right there,

right next to the fire.

0:07:200:07:25

Compared to being in prison

and being here, it's

0:07:250:07:28

completely different.

0:07:280:07:29

Here you feel free.

0:07:290:07:31

You're out in the world.

0:07:310:07:34

The biggest change for me is mental,

because I've never pushed myself

0:07:340:07:37

as hard, ever in life.

0:07:370:07:45

California has 4,000 inmate

firefighters, men and women.

0:07:450:07:48

Cutting firebreaks is risky work,

two have died this year.

0:07:480:07:51

But there are rewards too in reduced

sentences and a sense of purpose.

0:07:510:08:01

After being in this programme,

I feel like I've been rehabilitated

0:08:030:08:05

and I feel like I can go out

there and achieve anything

0:08:050:08:08

I want to because I've done this.

0:08:080:08:10

This is so hard.

0:08:100:08:17

We were allowed inside this

prison camp in Malibu.

0:08:170:08:19

There are no walls or fences here.

0:08:190:08:21

Violent or volatile

prisoners are not allowed

0:08:210:08:23

to join the programme.

0:08:230:08:26

With a job like this, there is only

time to think about the work.

0:08:260:08:30

Latoya Najar is serving four years

for causing the death

0:08:300:08:32

of her seven-year-old son

in a drunken car crash.

0:08:320:08:37

The attraction for me

was because of my crime,

0:08:370:08:39

I could come out here

and do something positive.

0:08:390:08:44

It's challenging mentally

to get over something.

0:08:440:08:46

I'm never going to get over it,

but to try to ease my mind

0:08:460:08:50

and this has helped.

0:08:500:08:54

With California facing more frequent

and more destructive fires,

0:08:540:08:56

some critics call this slave labour.

0:08:560:09:00

But the project is voluntary,

it may reduce re-offending and it

0:09:000:09:03

provides some measure of redemption.

0:09:030:09:07

Everyone is like, "We love

you firefighters."

0:09:070:09:10

We all wave back and

we wave to the kids.

0:09:100:09:14

It's amazing, yes.

0:09:140:09:20

The work may be exhausting,

it may be dangerous,

0:09:200:09:22

but in the words of one prisoner,

"It's better than twiddling

0:09:220:09:25

your thumbs in jail."

0:09:250:09:26

James Cook, BBC News,

in Southern California.

0:09:260:09:30

The charity Crisis at Christmas

opened its centres to four

0:09:330:09:35

and a half thousand

homeless people today.

0:09:350:09:38

Crisis is warning that

that the number of what it describes

0:09:380:09:41

as 'hidden rough sleepers'

could increase by almost 50 per cent

0:09:410:09:44

over the next decade.

0:09:440:09:45

Our correspondent Anisa Kadri went

to meet some of those seeking help.

0:09:450:09:55

I would like to get my hat fixed if

possible.

0:09:560:10:00

It may look like like a trip

to the tailors, but this is a free

0:10:000:10:03

service for homeless people who need

to get clothing and

0:10:030:10:06

accessories fixed.

0:10:060:10:07

And it is part of Crisis

at Christmas, offering

0:10:070:10:09

people without a home,

warmth, company and support

0:10:090:10:11

over the festive period.

0:10:110:10:12

I have been sleeping rough and then

a Crisis guy got me into a night

0:10:120:10:16

shelter and the shelters are very

good, but it is more

0:10:160:10:18

Christmassy here.

0:10:180:10:22

It is a bigger wide open space,

there is more movement,

0:10:220:10:27

there are more people

and you have a bigger choice

0:10:270:10:29

of people to associate with.

0:10:290:10:30

All day, volunteers have been

here providing hot food and hot

0:10:300:10:33

drinks to the people who have been

coming to this centre

0:10:330:10:35

for Crisis at Christmas.

0:10:350:10:37

And over the next few days,

the charity expects more than 4000

0:10:370:10:40

people to walk through its doors

at centres like this

0:10:400:10:42

around the country.

0:10:420:10:44

It is a chance for staff to meet

people who have been sleeping rough

0:10:440:10:48

and give them support over

Christmas.

0:10:480:10:52

11,000 volunteers are taking

part over the next few

0:10:520:10:54

days as Crisis warns

of a growing homelessness problem.

0:10:540:10:59

I volunteer because I don't

celebrate Christmas myself,

0:10:590:11:06

so it's nice to do something

on a day when I wouldn't

0:11:060:11:09

be that busy anyway

0:11:090:11:10

and volunteering with Crisis.

0:11:100:11:11

It is a lot of fun and it feels

like I'm helping a lot of people.

0:11:110:11:15

I think the best of the volunteers.

0:11:150:11:16

I think they are doing a great job,

beautiful job, brilliant job,

0:11:160:11:19

thanks to them, there are nice

people around me, I'm very happy.

0:11:190:11:22

As long as I am not on the street,

I've got a roof, I've got nice food,

0:11:220:11:26

have got a nice dinner,

but it is not all about food

0:11:260:11:29

and sleep, you know.

0:11:290:11:33

It is all about the chance to be

myself and I hope that this

0:11:330:11:36

is going to be my last year and that

next year will be better.

0:11:360:11:40

But for now it is just about making

life a little bit easier

0:11:400:11:43

for homeless people over

the Christmas period.

0:11:430:11:45

Anisa Kadri, BBC News.

0:11:450:11:50

Leon Bernicoff, one of the stars

of the TV show Gogglebox has

0:11:500:11:53

died at the age of 83.

0:11:530:11:54

The retired teacher and his wife

June were one of the first couples

0:11:540:11:57

to join the Channel 4 programme,

when it launched in 2013.

0:11:570:12:00

The broadcaster said he died

in hospital after a short illness.

0:12:000:12:08

With all the sport -

here's Olly Foster at

0:12:080:12:10

the BBC Sport Centre.

0:12:100:12:13

Good evening, it's been a really

busy day in the Premier League,

0:12:130:12:16

nine games and 25 goals are coming

up on Match of the Day

0:12:160:12:19

after the news...

0:12:190:12:20

But I've got the results

for you now...

0:12:200:12:22

if you want them ...

0:12:220:12:23

Manchester City have

stretched their lead at the top

0:12:230:12:26

of the table to 13 points ,

their 4-nil win against

0:12:260:12:29

Bournemouth was their 17th

in a row in the League.

0:12:290:12:31

Sergio Aguero scored twice.

0:12:310:12:34

Second placed Manchester United

slipped up at Leicester.

0:12:340:12:36

It finished 2-all with

The Foxes Harry Maguire

0:12:360:12:38

equalising in the 94th minute.

0:12:380:12:43

In the other results,

Brighton beat Watford 1-0.

0:12:430:12:44

Spurs won 3-0 at Burnley thanks

to a Harry Kane hat-trick.

0:12:440:12:47

Everton-Chelsea was goalless.

0:12:470:12:49

Southampton drew 1-1

against Huddersfield.

0:12:490:12:50

There was a much needed win

for Stoke against West Brom.

0:12:500:12:53

Swansea are still bottom after a 1-1

draw against Palace and Newcastle

0:12:530:12:56

are out of the bottom three

after winning 3-2 at West Ham.

0:12:560:13:03

Celtic are eight points clear at

the top of the Scottish Premiership

0:13:030:13:06

after beating second placed

Aberdeen 3-0.

0:13:060:13:08

That gave Rangers the opportunity

to jump up to second

0:13:080:13:10

but they lost 2-1 to Kilmarnock.

0:13:100:13:13

One of their former

players, Kris Boyd, scored

0:13:130:13:15

both the Killie goals.

0:13:150:13:17

There were also wins

for Hibs and Partick.

0:13:170:13:20

The games at Motherwell

and St Johnstone were drawn.

0:13:200:13:24

The reigning Champions Exeter Chiefs

have opened up a big lead

0:13:240:13:26

in the Rugby Union Premiership.

0:13:260:13:28

They ran in four tries

against Northampton Saints.

0:13:280:13:31

Will Chudley with the first of them

at Franklin's Gardens.

0:13:310:13:34

The 35-14 bonus point win

see them move 11 clear

0:13:340:13:37

of Wasps who also won today,

as did Sale and Newcastle.

0:13:370:13:43

Glasgow have lost for the first time

in the Pro14 this season.

0:13:430:13:47

Fourteen man Edinburgh

came from behind to win

0:13:470:13:48

18-17 with a Chris Dean

try

0:13:480:13:50

in the final minute at Murrayfield.

0:13:500:13:52

Elsewhere, Connacht had a big

win against Ulster.

0:13:520:13:58

Horse racing now has a mini-break,

but will return with eight meetings

0:13:580:14:01

up and down the country on Boxing

Day.

0:14:010:14:02

Not that the work stops,

especially for the grooms.

0:14:020:14:05

Here's our Sports

Correspondent Joe Wilson.

0:14:050:14:14

The unsung human heroes of Christmas

For thousands of grooms

like Jacob and Lily,

0:14:180:14:20

Christmas Day will always be

another working day.

0:14:200:14:22

Start off anywhere

between 5:00 and 6:30.

0:14:220:14:24

I muck out five horses.

0:14:240:14:33

We love the animals and myself and

Lily we have a goal of eventually

0:14:330:14:38

one day riding.

My dream would be to

be a professional jockey.

Boxing Day

0:14:380:14:44

is very important for British horse

racing because there are eight

0:14:440:14:47

meetings around the country. In

total in Britain there are 14,000

0:14:470:14:53

racehorses in training and all of

them need that day care and

0:14:530:14:59

attention from a professional. It is

what Ken Dooley did. He died in

0:14:590:15:03

October looking after a horse at

Kempton race course. The fundraising

0:15:030:15:07

paid in his honour reflected the

shock at his death and respect for

0:15:070:15:12

his life. Racing relies on the

greens, the greens, the boss at this

0:15:120:15:17

yard knows it.

It is cold weather. I

did it myself for years and I know

0:15:170:15:23

what it is like. It is where I

started as a lad and it is hard work

0:15:230:15:28

for not a lot of money.

This is the

reward, on an icy hillsides, grooms

0:15:280:15:34

riding out, exercising the horses

and imagining winners that may come

0:15:340:15:38

their way on this and future Boxing

days. Joe Wilson, BBC News,

You can see more on all of today's

stories on the BBC News Channel.

0:15:500:15:53

That's all from me.
