Good evening.

0:00:210:00:25

Two of the most famous names

in music - Ringo Starr

0:00:250:00:30

of the Beatles and Barry Gibb

of the Bee Gees - are among

0:00:300:00:33

those awarded knighthoods

in the New Year Honours list.

0:00:330:00:36

The former deputy prime minister

Nick Clegg also receives

0:00:360:00:38

a knighthood and Darcey Bussell,

the accomplished ballerina and judge

0:00:380:00:41

on Strictly Come Dancing

has been made a Dame.

0:00:410:00:44

They're among 1,100 people named

in the New Year Honours list

0:00:440:00:47

- many of whom have been rewarded

for their work in the community.

0:00:470:00:50

Lizo Mzimba reports.

# Twist and shout!

# Twist and shout.

0:00:510:00:55

More than 50 years after

Beatlemania, the Fab Four's

0:00:550:00:57

drummer has been honoured

with a knighthood...

0:00:570:01:03

# What would you do if I sang...

0:01:030:01:07

..Recognising Ringo Starr's

half-a-century-long

0:01:070:01:10

contribution to music.

0:01:100:01:12

# I get by with a little

help from my friends.

0:01:120:01:15

# Tragedy!

0:01:150:01:19

Former Bee Gee Barry Gibb said

he was humbled and very proud

0:01:190:01:22

to be made Sir Barry.

0:01:220:01:30

Easy, Joey, easy now.

0:01:300:01:35

A knighthood, too, for the creator

of War Horse, Michael Morpurgo.

0:01:350:01:42

Strictly judge Darcey Bussell,

who has occasionally performed

0:01:430:01:50

on the programme too,

is made a dame for

0:01:500:01:53

services to dance.

0:01:530:01:54

I'm Dickie Roper.

0:01:540:01:55

I'm the night manager.

0:01:550:01:56

Those being made CBEs,

the next highest level of award,

0:01:560:01:58

include actor Hugh Laurie

for services to drama.

0:01:580:02:00

Are you English, Pine?

0:02:000:02:03

And best-selling Riders

author Jilly Cooper.

0:02:030:02:04

Absolutely knocked out.

0:02:040:02:06

I was thrilled.

0:02:060:02:07

I couldn't believe it.

0:02:070:02:11

I mean, suddenly to get a letter,

you know, and one thinks "Oh,

0:02:110:02:14

God, it's a bill, a gas

bill or something".

0:02:140:02:16

And it's this heavenly thing,

saying, "You're a CBE".

0:02:160:02:18

It's wonderful.

0:02:180:02:23

Hull had a hugely successful year

as UK's City of Culture.

0:02:230:02:26

Members of the team behind the 12

month celebration have

0:02:260:02:29

been made CBE and OBEs.

0:02:290:02:31

# I've got to run away.

0:02:310:02:36

Singer and campaigner Marc Almond

is made an OBE for services

0:02:360:02:39

to arts and culture.

0:02:390:02:45

Musician and producer Wiley,

known as the "Godfather

0:02:450:02:48

of Grime", is made an MBE.

0:02:480:02:50

COMMENTATOR:

The pass to Warburton.

0:02:500:02:51

Brilliant catch by the captain!

0:02:510:02:53

In the world of sport,

Sam Warburton, who has captained

0:02:530:02:56

Wales and the British

and Irish Lions, is made an OBE.

0:02:560:03:01

England cricket players

have been recognised,

0:03:010:03:04

including Anya Shrubsole.

0:03:040:03:06

Her bowling helped England

win the World Cup.

0:03:060:03:08

It really has been a landmark year

and it says a huge amount

0:03:080:03:11

about the whole tournament

and women's cricket

0:03:110:03:13

in general, I think.

0:03:130:03:14

It shows how much the game has

grown and just how big

0:03:140:03:17

that tournament was,

that it's recognised in something

0:03:170:03:19

like the New Year Honours list.

0:03:190:03:22

Most of those being honoured

are ordinary people doing

0:03:220:03:25

extraordinary work,

like Efe Ezekiel, who acts

0:03:250:03:26

as a mentor for young people.

0:03:260:03:29

Of course, young people

are everything to me.

0:03:290:03:32

I'm passionate about them

and passionate about their life,

0:03:320:03:35

their well-being and their welfare.

0:03:350:03:36

So for me to be recognised

for my passion is one

0:03:360:03:38

of the greatest honours ever,

so I'm in complete

0:03:380:03:41

gratitude and appreciation.

0:03:410:03:44

The majority of honours do go

to people who aren't

0:03:440:03:47

in the public eye but who have

given exceptional service.

0:03:470:03:52

And in 2018, the honours committee

say they will be looking

0:03:520:03:55

to particularly recognise

individuals who were involved

0:03:550:03:59

in the response to,

and the aftermath, of the London

0:03:590:04:02

and Manchester terror attacks,

and the fire at Grenfell Tower.

0:04:020:04:04

Lizo Mzimba, BBC News,

Buckingham Palace.

0:04:040:04:12

Firefighters are tackling

a blaze in a block of flats

0:04:120:04:15

in Manchester's Northern Quarter.

0:04:150:04:16

The fire is on the ninth floor

and tenth floors of the 12-storey

0:04:160:04:19

building on Joiner Street.

0:04:190:04:22

Police closed part of the road

and Manchester Fire and Rescue

0:04:220:04:25

service is asking people to avoid

the area and to keep their doors

0:04:250:04:28

and windows shut if they are nearby.

0:04:280:04:32

In Iran, thousands of people

are rallying in support

0:04:320:04:34

of the Government after street

protests against the authorities

0:04:340:04:36

entered their third day.

0:04:360:04:39

State television has shown crowds

of people in the capital Tehran.

0:04:390:04:41

The anti-government protests started

in Mashhad and spread to several

0:04:410:04:44

parts of the country,

over what demonstrators

0:04:440:04:46

say is corruption and

falling living standards.

0:04:460:04:48

Our correspondent

Wyre Davies reports.

0:04:480:04:56

The third day of protests in Iran,

what began in small cities is now

0:04:560:05:01

spreading to the capital Tehran and

the main university campus. These

0:05:010:05:05

are worrying signs for the Iranian

government and the ultraconservative

0:05:050:05:09

Shia clerics who have rolled over

the country since the 1979

0:05:090:05:12

revolution. Shouting for the clerics

to give him a job, this protester

0:05:120:05:22

typifies the economic anger felt by

many Iranians, they accuse the

0:05:220:05:28

clerics of living in gilded palaces

and sponsoring conflicts overseas

0:05:280:05:30

while the economy and the country

suffers. But dissent in Iran is only

0:05:300:05:37

tolerated to appoint. Uniformed and

plain clothes police clashed with

0:05:370:05:43

protesters and made dozens of

arrests in several cities.

I don't

0:05:430:05:48

expect the protest to snowball as of

now because the regime has a

0:05:480:05:52

response in place and if the

protesters don't stop ultimately the

0:05:520:05:57

reaction will become heavy-handed.

We are just not there yet.

In a

0:05:570:06:03

response on Twitter Donald Trump

want Iran that the world was

0:06:030:06:06

watching saying that Tehran should

respect people's rights to express

0:06:060:06:09

themselves. Comments that the

Iranian Foreign Minister called

0:06:090:06:14

opportunistic and deceitful. The

government has warned people not to

0:06:140:06:20

take part in what it calls illegal

protests, organising instead large,

0:06:200:06:27

pro-regime counterdemonstrations, in

support of the supreme leader. And

0:06:270:06:37

the end of two clever -- the end to

clerical role has been a theme of

0:06:370:06:44

this demonstration, some of which

has ended in violence.

0:06:440:06:49

Nepal has banned solo climbers

from scaling its mountains,

0:06:490:06:52

including Mount Everest.

0:06:520:06:53

The new safety regulations also

prevent double amputee and blind

0:06:530:06:55

climbers from attempting to reach

the summit of the world's highest

0:06:550:06:58

peak unless they can produce

a medical certificate

0:06:580:07:00

proving their fitness.

0:07:000:07:01

The government says the law has been

revised to make mountaineering safer

0:07:010:07:04

and reduce the number

of accidents and deaths.

0:07:040:07:08

Younger people will enjoy

the biggest "inheritance boom"

0:07:080:07:11

of any post-war generation according

to a research body that

0:07:110:07:13

analyses living standards.

0:07:130:07:16

The Resolution Foundation says those

born in the 80s and early 90s,

0:07:160:07:19

known as millennials,

will inherit more wealth

0:07:190:07:20

than previous generations.

0:07:200:07:23

There's a snag, though -

they are not likely to benefit

0:07:230:07:26

from the money until their 60s,

as our business correspondent

0:07:260:07:28

Joe Lynam explains.

0:07:280:07:33

We've long been told that

millennials, aged between 17 and 35,

0:07:330:07:36

face major financial challenges.

0:07:360:07:38

They are paid less

than their parents,

0:07:380:07:40

they won't have generous pensions,

and they can't get

0:07:400:07:42

on the housing ladder.

0:07:420:07:45

So we know there's a big

generational wealth divide.

0:07:450:07:48

Millennials are accumulating wealth

at a far slower rate than the baby

0:07:480:07:51

boomers before them did.

0:07:510:07:52

We've looked at whether inheritances

are going to solve

0:07:520:07:54

that problem for them.

0:07:540:07:55

And they will play

a really big role.

0:07:550:07:58

There will be lots more money coming

down in the coming decades.

0:07:580:08:01

And it will be a bit more widely

spread because of high homeownership

0:08:010:08:05

amongst the parents.

0:08:050:08:08

But this isn't the silver

bullet to millennials'

0:08:080:08:10

living standards woes.

0:08:100:08:11

It's match day at Sheffield United

and there is always

0:08:110:08:13

a sense of anticipation.

0:08:130:08:15

But when it comes to money this

study suggests that young people

0:08:150:08:18

will have to wait until they're

in their 60s before inheriting

0:08:180:08:21

anything, but are they worried?

0:08:210:08:24

You put so much work in at uni

and so much into your job,

0:08:240:08:27

and you're not going to be able

to own a house and have a house

0:08:270:08:31

for your family and I think that's

difficult knowing that.

0:08:310:08:33

Knowing that you've got to wait that

length of time in the future.

0:08:330:08:36

Well, we'll inherit it

but it was never our

0:08:360:08:38

money to begin with.

0:08:380:08:39

Exactly.

0:08:390:08:40

So I don't suppose it

makes a difference.

0:08:400:08:42

Whether we've got to wait or not.

0:08:420:08:45

Unless of course I spend

it all before I go.

0:08:450:08:48

LAUGHTER

Which may happen.

0:08:480:08:50

It may happen.

0:08:500:08:55

Although millennials are set

to inherit more than any previous

0:08:550:08:57

generation thanks to booming

property values, that assumes

0:08:570:09:01

that the inheritance is not

spent on social care

0:09:010:09:03

for their parents or themselves.

0:09:030:09:06

Soaring property prices,

especially in the south-east,

0:09:060:09:10

lie behind the expected surge

in inheritances in the future.

0:09:100:09:13

So if you're in your 30s or younger,

and your parents own property,

0:09:130:09:17

then you can expect

to inherit something substantial.

0:09:170:09:21

But if your parents don't

own any major assets,

0:09:210:09:24

then your future wealth prospects

don't look as good.
