The anti-government protests -
that started in Mashhad and spread | 0:01:36 | 0:01:39
to several parts of the country -
are about corruption | 0:01:39 | 0:01:42
and falling living standards. | 0:01:42 | 0:01:44
Our correspondent
Wyre Davies reports. | 0:01:44 | 0:01:48
Three days in and Iran's
anti-government protests | 0:01:51 | 0:01:53
have turned violent. | 0:01:53 | 0:01:55
In the northern city of Mashhad,
demonstrators demanding an end | 0:01:55 | 0:01:58
to hardline clerical rule set police
motorbikes alight and taunted | 0:01:58 | 0:02:02
the security services. | 0:02:02 | 0:02:10
From Dorud in the west,
video showed crowds scattering | 0:02:10 | 0:02:13
after two protesters
were reportedly shot and killed. | 0:02:13 | 0:02:21
What began in provincial cities has
now spread to the capital Tehran | 0:02:21 | 0:02:24
and the main university campus. | 0:02:24 | 0:02:27
These are worrying signs
for the Iranian government | 0:02:27 | 0:02:30
and the ultraconservative Shia
clerics, who've ruled | 0:02:30 | 0:02:32
over the country since
the 1979 Revolution. | 0:02:32 | 0:02:41
The government response,
organising large pro-regime counter | 0:02:42 | 0:02:45
demonstrations in support
of the Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali | 0:02:45 | 0:02:49
Khamenei and warning people not
to take part in what it | 0:02:49 | 0:02:52
called illegal protests. | 0:02:52 | 0:02:57
Shouting for the clerics to give him
a job, this protester typifies | 0:02:57 | 0:03:00
the economic anger that many
Iranians feel. | 0:03:00 | 0:03:04
The last time that people protested
like this was almost a decade ago | 0:03:04 | 0:03:07
and some fear similar
violent consequences now. | 0:03:07 | 0:03:12
This is a regime that knows how
to manage its people and has | 0:03:12 | 0:03:16
a monopoly on the use of violence. | 0:03:16 | 0:03:18
They effectively demonstrated that
in 2009 and I think that most | 0:03:18 | 0:03:22
Iranians, at least the ones
that I have spoken to, | 0:03:22 | 0:03:25
in the age of 25-40,
have not yet joined these protests. | 0:03:25 | 0:03:28
There's been little international
reaction, but responding | 0:03:28 | 0:03:35
on Twitter, Donald Trump said
the Iranian government should | 0:03:35 | 0:03:37
respect people's rights to express
themselves and warned | 0:03:37 | 0:03:39
"the world is watching." | 0:03:39 | 0:03:45
But dissent in Iran is only
tolerated to a point, uniformed | 0:03:45 | 0:03:48
and plain clothes police have made
dozens of arrests across | 0:03:48 | 0:03:50
the country, a sign the authorities
may already be turning the screw. | 0:03:50 | 0:03:54

he was humbled and very proud | 0:04:48 | 0:04:51
to be made Sir Barry. | 0:04:51 | 0:04:57
Easy, Joey, easy now. | 0:05:02 | 0:05:04

I was thrilled. | 0:05:38 | 0:05:39
I couldn't believe it. | 0:05:39 | 0:05:41

And it's this heavenly thing,
saying, "You're a CBE". | 0:05:46 | 0:05:48

COMMENTATOR: The pass to Warburton. | 0:06:19 | 0:06:20
Brilliant catch by the captain! | 0:06:20 | 0:06:22
In the world of sport,
Sam Warburton, who has captained | 0:06:22 | 0:06:24
Wales and the British & Irish Lions,
is made an OBE. | 0:06:24 | 0:06:29
England cricket players
have been recognised, | 0:06:29 | 0:06:31
including Anya Shrubsole. | 0:06:31 | 0:06:33
Her bowling helped England
win the World Cup. | 0:06:33 | 0:06:36
It really has been a landmark year,
and it says a huge amount | 0:06:36 | 0:06:39
about the whole tournament
and women's cricket | 0:06:39 | 0:06:40
in general, I think. | 0:06:40 | 0:06:42
It shows how much the game has
grown and just how big | 0:06:42 | 0:06:46
that tournament was,
that it would be recognised | 0:06:46 | 0:06:47
in something like the
New Year Honours list. | 0:06:47 | 0:06:51
Most of those being honoured
are ordinary people doing | 0:06:51 | 0:06:54
extraordinary work,
like Efe Ezekiel, who acts | 0:06:54 | 0:06:56
as a mentor for young people. | 0:06:56 | 0:06:59
Of course, young people
are everything to me. | 0:06:59 | 0:07:01
I'm passionate about them
and passionate about their life, | 0:07:01 | 0:07:04
their well-being and their welfare. | 0:07:04 | 0:07:06
So for me to be recognised
for my passion is one | 0:07:06 | 0:07:09
of the greatest honours ever,
so I'm in complete | 0:07:09 | 0:07:11
gratitude and appreciation. | 0:07:11 | 0:07:14
The majority of honours do go
to people who aren't | 0:07:14 | 0:07:17
in the public eye but who have
given exceptional service. | 0:07:17 | 0:07:19
And, in 2018, the honours committee
say they will be looking | 0:07:19 | 0:07:23
to particularly recognise
individuals who were involved | 0:07:23 | 0:07:28
in the response to,
and the aftermath of, | 0:07:28 | 0:07:31
the London and Manchester terror
attacks, and the fire | 0:07:31 | 0:07:33
at Grenfell Tower. | 0:07:33 | 0:07:35
Lizo Mzimba, BBC News,
Buckingham Palace. | 0:07:35 | 0:07:40
Well, there's also been
some criticism about | 0:07:40 | 0:07:43
the number of politicians
in the New Year Honours List. | 0:07:43 | 0:07:45
With me is our political
correspondent, Chris Mason. | 0:07:45 | 0:07:47
Chris, what's being said
and what's the situation? | 0:07:47 | 0:07:54
Here are some of the names. Graeme
Grady, Conservative MP, who chairs | 0:07:54 | 0:08:01
the 1922 committee of conservatives,
who has a knighthood. Another senior | 0:08:01 | 0:08:06
member of the committee, the
vice-chair, Cheryl Gillan, made a | 0:08:06 | 0:08:11
dame. That committee is very
important within the Conservative | 0:08:11 | 0:08:15
Party. They play a crucial role in
leadership contests. Not just | 0:08:15 | 0:08:21
Conservative MPs, but Labour MPs.
The Deputy speaker of the commons | 0:08:21 | 0:08:26
being knighted. Former Lib Dem
leader Nick Clegg. Criticism comes | 0:08:26 | 0:08:35
from the SNP which say that they are
obvious political appointments. | 0:08:35 | 0:08:38
Worth pointing out that there are
Independent honours committees who | 0:08:38 | 0:08:41
decide who gets these awards. There
were more politicians in Dame hoods | 0:08:41 | 0:08:46
and knighthood this year than last,
but in the birthday honours in the | 0:08:46 | 0:08:51
summer, there were not any
politicians getting on then. This | 0:08:51 | 0:08:56
year, like last, those in politics
making up fewer than 2% of those on | 0:08:56 | 0:09:00
the list overall. Thank you for
that. | 0:09:00 | 0:09:04 | |
Firefighters have tackled a blaze
in a twelve-storey block of flats | 0:09:04 | 0:09:07
in Manchester city centre. | 0:09:07 | 0:09:08
The fire spread to several levels
of the building before | 0:09:08 | 0:09:10
being brought under control. | 0:09:10 | 0:09:11
A dozen fire engines were deployed. | 0:09:11 | 0:09:13
One person has been
taken to hospital. | 0:09:13 | 0:09:14
Younger people will enjoy
the biggest "inheritance boom" | 0:09:14 | 0:09:17
of any post-war generation according
to a research body that | 0:09:17 | 0:09:20
analyses living standards. | 0:09:20 | 0:09:22
The Resolution Foundation says those
born in the 80s and early 90s, | 0:09:22 | 0:09:26
known as millennials,
will inherit more wealth | 0:09:26 | 0:09:28
than previous generations. | 0:09:28 | 0:09:32
There's a snag, though
they are not likely to benefit | 0:09:32 | 0:09:35
from the money until their 60s,
as our business correspondent | 0:09:35 | 0:09:37
Joe Lynam explains. | 0:09:37 | 0:09:40
We've long been told that
millennials, aged between 17 and 35, | 0:09:40 | 0:09:44
face major financial challenges. | 0:09:44 | 0:09:47
They are paid less
than their parents, | 0:09:47 | 0:09:48
they won't have generous pensions,
and they can't get | 0:09:48 | 0:09:50
on the housing ladder. | 0:09:50 | 0:09:52
So we know there's a big
generational wealth divide. | 0:09:52 | 0:09:55
Millennials are accumulating wealth
at a far slower rate than the baby | 0:09:55 | 0:09:58
boomers before them did. | 0:09:58 | 0:10:00
We've looked at whether inheritances
are going to solve | 0:10:00 | 0:10:02
that problem for them. | 0:10:02 | 0:10:03
And they will play
a really big role. | 0:10:03 | 0:10:05
There will be lots more money coming
down in the coming decades. | 0:10:05 | 0:10:08
And it will be a bit more widely
spread because of high homeownership | 0:10:08 | 0:10:12
amongst the parents. | 0:10:12 | 0:10:13
But this isn't the silver
bullet to millennials' | 0:10:13 | 0:10:15
living standards woes. | 0:10:15 | 0:10:18
It's match day at Sheffield United
and there is always | 0:10:18 | 0:10:20
a sense of anticipation. | 0:10:20 | 0:10:22
But when it comes to money this
study suggests that young people | 0:10:22 | 0:10:25
will have to wait until they're
in their 60s before inheriting | 0:10:25 | 0:10:28
anything, but are they worried? | 0:10:28 | 0:10:29
You put so much work in at uni
and so much into your job, | 0:10:29 | 0:10:33
and you're not going to be able
to own a house and have a house | 0:10:33 | 0:10:37
for your family and I think that's
difficult knowing that. | 0:10:37 | 0:10:39
Knowing that you've got to wait that
length of time in the future. | 0:10:39 | 0:10:42
Well, we'll inherit it
but it was never our | 0:10:42 | 0:10:45
money to begin with. | 0:10:45 | 0:10:46
Exactly. | 0:10:46 | 0:10:48
So I don't suppose it
makes a difference. | 0:10:48 | 0:10:51
Whether we've got to wait or not. | 0:10:51 | 0:10:53
Unless of course I spend
it all before I go. | 0:10:53 | 0:10:56
LAUGHTER | 0:10:56 | 0:10:57
Which may happen. | 0:10:57 | 0:10:59
It may happen. | 0:10:59 | 0:11:02
Although millennials are set
to inherit more than any previous | 0:11:02 | 0:11:05
generation thanks to booming
property values, that assumes | 0:11:05 | 0:11:08
that the inheritance is not
spent on social care | 0:11:08 | 0:11:10
for their parents or themselves. | 0:11:10 | 0:11:14
Soaring property prices,
especially in the south-east, | 0:11:14 | 0:11:16
lie behind the expected surge
in inheritances in the future. | 0:11:16 | 0:11:20
So if you're in your 30s or younger,
and your parents own property, | 0:11:20 | 0:11:24
then you can expect
to inherit something substantial. | 0:11:24 | 0:11:28
But if your parents don't
own any major assets, | 0:11:28 | 0:11:31
then your future wealth prospects
don't look as good. | 0:11:31 | 0:11:34

With all the sport -
here's Olly Foster at | 0:11:38 | 0:11:40
the BBC Sport Centre. | 0:11:40 | 0:11:43
Hello. | 0:11:43 | 0:11:44
Celtic will take an eight-point lead
at the top of the Scottish | 0:11:44 | 0:11:46
Premiership into the New Year
and the three-week winter break. | 0:11:46 | 0:11:49
It was goaless against Rangers
in the Old Firm match, | 0:11:49 | 0:11:51
but it was far from dull. | 0:11:51 | 0:11:53
Adam Wild reports. | 0:11:53 | 0:11:58
If this has been the season of peace
and goodwill, it was never likely to | 0:11:58 | 0:12:03
continue here. Few footballing
cities are divided quite like | 0:12:03 | 0:12:08
Glasgow, and in recent times these
two have really been further apart. | 0:12:08 | 0:12:12
It's more than seven years since
Rangers won at Celtic in the league, | 0:12:12 | 0:12:17
and that didn't look too much like
changing. James Forrest just a | 0:12:17 | 0:12:22
fingertip away. Rangers would have
plenty to thank their goalkeeper | 0:12:22 | 0:12:29
for, keeping Celtic out time and
again. But fortunes change. In this | 0:12:29 | 0:12:35
derby at least Rangers fans only had
to wait until the second half. Now | 0:12:35 | 0:12:39
it was then making the chances and
forcing the saves. Brilliant by | 0:12:39 | 0:12:45
Craig Gaudin, and his next was
astonishing. Neither keeper deserve | 0:12:45 | 0:12:50
to be beaten, and ultimately,
neither was. The great rivalry ends | 0:12:50 | 0:12:55
for another year, both missing the
chance to have the final word, both | 0:12:55 | 0:13:00
with plenty on which to reflect. | 0:13:00 | 0:13:03
There were seven games
in the Premier League today, | 0:13:03 | 0:13:05
highlights are coming
up on Match of the Day | 0:13:05 | 0:13:07
after the news, or you can get
the results right now. | 0:13:07 | 0:13:10
Liverpool came from behind
to beat Leicester. | 0:13:10 | 0:13:11
Virgil Van Dijk was in the stands
at Anfield after his £75 million | 0:13:11 | 0:13:15
transfer from Southampton. | 0:13:15 | 0:13:15
Mohammed Salah scored twice
