Good evening.

0:00:230:00:25

Three teenage boys have been killed

after they were hit by a car

0:00:250:00:28

in Hayes in West London.

0:00:280:00:30

A man aged 28 who was in the car

is under arrest in hospital.

0:00:300:00:33

Police say they are investigating

an altercation thought to be linked

0:00:330:00:37

to this incident after the crash.

0:00:370:00:39

Our correspondent Ben Ando reports.

0:00:390:00:44

Friends, class mates, mourners.

Three, two, one...

Grieving together

0:00:440:00:51

and improvised memorial for a

tragedy as shocking as it was

0:00:510:00:54

unexpected to mark the deaths of

three teenagers struck by a speeding

0:00:540:00:58

car in Hayes in Middlesex yesterday

evening. The teenage boys have not

0:00:580:01:04

been formally identified but have

been named locally as George, Harry

0:01:040:01:08

and Josh, two were 16 years old, the

other 17. Earlier their families

0:01:080:01:13

visited the bus stop where the boys

lost their lives. Jake Webb was one

0:01:130:01:17

of the first on the scene

immediately after it happened.

I

0:01:170:01:21

seen it happen in front of me. There

was a bus driver in front of us and

0:01:210:01:25

he came over and said, yes, there's

someone dead in the road and at that

0:01:250:01:30

point I relayed that to 999 and

within five minutes an ambulance

0:01:300:01:34

arrived.

Friends of the boys say

they were walking along the pavement

0:01:340:01:38

in this direction going to a party

when the car struck the pavement

0:01:380:01:43

about here, seconds later it hit

them. The car, a will look Audi,

0:01:430:01:49

then spark -- a black Audi, then

came to a halt in the road, this

0:01:490:01:54

image showing the force of the

impact. The man who had been in the

0:01:540:01:58

car was attacked on a nearby garage

forecourt. Some locals say speeding

0:01:580:02:02

cars on this stretch of road is

nothing new.

It's a 60mph road and

0:02:020:02:08

cars, vehicles drive up here

sometimes like it's a speed track.

0:02:080:02:13

This road's busy 24-7 and if I'm

honest, I'm surprised there hasn't

0:02:130:02:18

been more accidents along it.

Police

believe two men were in the crashed

0:02:180:02:21

car, and with many other teenagers

heading to the same party, they're

0:02:210:02:25

appealing for any witnesses to

contact them. Ben An doe, BBC News,

0:02:250:02:29

Hayes.

0:02:290:02:30

All current rape and serious sexual

assault cases in England

0:02:300:02:33

and Wales are to be reviewed,

following the collapse

0:02:330:02:35

of several recent trials.

0:02:350:02:37

The Director of Public Prosecutions

Alison Saunders said

0:02:370:02:39

it was "a matter of urgency" to make

sure evidence has been

0:02:390:02:42

properly disclosed.

0:02:420:02:43

But the Government's chief legal

adviser says there's no evidence

0:02:430:02:46

of "widespread malpractice

or dishonesty" in the

0:02:460:02:49

prosecution system.

0:02:490:02:51

Clive Coleman reports.

0:02:510:02:53

Disclosure of evidence in some

recent highly publicised rape cases

0:02:530:02:57

has gone badly wrong,

but how widespread is the problem?

0:02:570:03:01

In December, Liam Allen's trial

for rape and sexual assault

0:03:010:03:05

collapsed when it emerged evidence

on a computer disc which police

0:03:050:03:09

examined showed messages

from the alleged victim

0:03:090:03:13

pestering him for casual sex.

0:03:130:03:17

And the number of prosecutions

in England and Wales that collapsed

0:03:170:03:20

because of a failure by police

or prosecutors to disclose evidence

0:03:200:03:24

has increased by 70%

in the last two years.

0:03:240:03:28

Now, the Director of

Public Prosecutions,

0:03:280:03:32

Alison Saunders, has ordered

an urgent review of all rape

0:03:320:03:36

and sexual assault cases

0:03:360:03:39

and conceded it's likely

a number will be dropped.

0:03:390:03:43

One of the major problems

is the amount of digital evidence

0:03:430:03:45

on phones and social media.

0:03:450:03:47

It's very apparent that in some

cases, mistakes have been made that

0:03:470:03:51

simply shouldn't have been.

0:03:510:03:53

It's important that when you look

at that kind of case,

0:03:530:03:57

that the prosecutors

and the investigators look

0:03:570:03:59

at social media traffic,

look at text messages that have past

0:03:590:04:03

between the two individuals,

because they can put

0:04:030:04:05

what's happened in a very

significant different light.

0:04:050:04:08

A national disclosure improvement

plan has been published.

0:04:080:04:10

It includes a review

of disclosure training,

0:04:100:04:15

developing a group of specialists

in every police force

0:04:150:04:19

and all multi-media evidence to be

provided to the defence digitally.

0:04:190:04:23

Yesterday here, a people

trafficking case, not a rape

0:04:230:04:28

or sexual assault trial,

collapsed because prosecutors failed

0:04:280:04:32

to disclose critical

evidence to the defence.

0:04:320:04:36

The judge has demanded an urgent

explanation in a case made even more

0:04:360:04:41

shocking by the fact that one

of the young female defendants

0:04:410:04:45

was held in prison for 13 months

during which time she gave birth.

0:04:450:04:48

This problem is systemic

and endemic throughout

0:04:480:04:50

the criminal justice system.

0:04:500:04:51

It's been known about for many years

and it's as a result of chronic

0:04:510:04:55

underfunding of the police,

the prosecution service

0:04:550:04:59

and particularly the defence lawyers

who've suffered years of cuts

0:04:590:05:01

of legal aid.

0:05:010:05:03

If public confidence in our fair

trial system is to be maintained,

0:05:030:05:07

fixing disclosure is now

the criminal justice

0:05:070:05:10

system's biggest challenge.

0:05:100:05:15

A bomb in the Afghan capital Kabul

has left 95 people dead

0:05:150:05:18

and more than 150 injured.

0:05:180:05:20

The Taliban say they

carried out the attack.

0:05:200:05:23

An emergency vehicle,

packed with explosives,

0:05:230:05:27

was blown up at a checkpoint.

0:05:270:05:29

From Kabul, Zia Shahreyar reports.

0:05:290:05:37

An ambulance packed

with explosives driven into crowds

0:05:370:05:39

on their way to work.

0:05:390:05:42

The force of the blast shook

the windows off buildings

0:05:420:05:45

at least a mile away.

0:05:450:05:47

Some lower rising

structures collapse.

0:05:470:05:49

A plume of smoke visible

across the city.

0:05:490:05:52

The attacker had driven his vehicle

past the police checkpoint,

0:05:520:05:55

claiming to have a patient inside.

0:05:550:05:58

When guards at a second

checkpoint became suspicious,

0:05:580:06:01

he detonated the bomb.

0:06:010:06:04

TRANSLATION:

I was in an armoured

plated vehicle when suddenly

0:06:040:06:07

there was an explosion.

0:06:070:06:08

I was in the back seat,

my driver was blown out

0:06:080:06:11

on to the ground and injured.

0:06:110:06:14

The area of the attack is home

to foreign embassies and the city's

0:06:140:06:17

police headquarters.

0:06:170:06:19

The road had been closed

to public transport.

0:06:190:06:21

The Taliban claimed responsibility.

0:06:210:06:26

This is their second deadly assault

on the city in the space of a week.

0:06:260:06:30

20 people were killed

in an attack on the

0:06:300:06:33

Intercontinental Hotel last week.

0:06:330:06:35

This evening, work was

continuing to clear the scene

0:06:350:06:38

of the latest bombing.

0:06:380:06:42

This is a very secure area

and security is very tight

0:06:420:06:46

here usually and the question

will be how they got

0:06:460:06:48

through this far.

0:06:480:06:50

The Afghan military,

backed by US air power,

0:06:500:06:53

has intensified its campaign

to drive out the Taliban

0:06:530:06:55

from its rural strongholds.

0:06:550:06:57

But, as today's strike proves,

they're still able to mount deadly

0:06:570:07:01

attacks against civilian targets

in the heart of the

0:07:010:07:03

country's major cities.

0:07:030:07:06

Homes and businesses in Paris

are on high alert as the River Seine

0:07:090:07:13

threatens to overflow its banks.

0:07:130:07:15

Weeks of rain have pushed the water

level up and its thought the River

0:07:150:07:18

will peak six metres above normal.

0:07:180:07:20

Museums including the

Louvre have been shut.

0:07:200:07:23

In smaller towns along the Seine,

people are having to use boats

0:07:230:07:27

to get around flooded streets.

0:07:270:07:29

One of the world's richest men

who was held for two months

0:07:290:07:33

by the Saudi authorities

in an anti-corruption

0:07:330:07:35

drive, has been freed.

0:07:350:07:37

Prince Alwaleed bin Talal

was one of 200 princes,

0:07:370:07:41

politicians and wealthy businessmen

detained in a crackdown.

0:07:410:07:43

They were held at a luxury

hotel in Riyadh.

0:07:430:07:45

Its believed a financial settlement

was agreed in return

0:07:450:07:48

for the Prince's release.

0:07:480:07:54

Denmark's Caroline Wozniacki has

won her first tennis Grand Slam

0:07:540:07:56

title after beating Simona Halep

in a thrilling three sets

0:07:560:07:59

at the Australian Open.

0:07:590:08:01

Victory in Melbourne means

Wozniacki returns to number 1

0:08:010:08:03

in the World rankings.

0:08:030:08:04

Adam Wild reports.

0:08:040:08:09

There are few stages in the game

more spectacular than Melbourne and

0:08:090:08:13

the welcome could scarcely have been

more fitting.

The winner takes it

0:08:130:08:17

all...

The world's top two toe-to-toe Down

0:08:170:08:21

Under, the final already had all the

sparkle it needed, a match worth the

0:08:210:08:26

wait, the wait is something with

which was was and Halep are all too

0:08:260:08:30

familiar with. Neither had won a

Grand Slam before, this was

0:08:300:08:36

Wozniacki's 4 III attempt. She

started like a player not prepared

0:08:360:08:39

to wait any longer. Halep too is

battle hardened, forcing a tie-break

0:08:390:08:45

before finally seeing it slip away.

A moment for her to stay calm, keep

0:08:450:08:48

her cool, not easy in the blistering

evening heat. Still, somehow she

0:08:480:08:53

managed, fighting back to level the

match. The foamtures now becoming

0:08:530:09:00

the battle with both having to leave

court to cool off. It was heating

0:09:000:09:05

up, the final set befitting such an

occasion, going one way then the

0:09:050:09:09

other, this taking Wozniacki to the

brink. One more point and her long

0:09:090:09:17

wait was finally over.

She's done

it! And you will not see a more

0:09:170:09:24

popular winner.

I've dreamt of this

moment for so many years and to be

0:09:240:09:29

here today is a dream come true and

my voice is shaking, I'm going to

0:09:290:09:33

cierks but today is a very emotional

moment.

Wozniacky at last a Grand

0:09:330:09:38

Slam champion, she becomes world

number one, a winner who today took

0:09:380:09:44

it all.

0:09:440:09:45

There's more throughout the evening

on the BBC News Channel,

0:09:450:09:47

we are back with the late news

at the earlier time tonight of 9.10.
