into the industry. They don't really want to go through that again, so | :00:00. | :00:00.
they are very keen to be redeployed in other areas of the workforce. | :00:00. | :00:13.
I have just chaired a meeting of the Government emergency committee, | :00:14. | :00:20.
Cobra, where we discussed the details of and the response to the | :00:21. | :00:26.
appalling events in Manchester last night our thoughts and prayers are | :00:27. | :00:29.
with the victims and with the families and friends of all those | :00:30. | :00:33.
affected. It is now beyond doubt that the people of Manchester and of | :00:34. | :00:39.
this country have fallen victim to a callous terrorist attack, an attack | :00:40. | :00:44.
that targeted some of the youngest people in our society with cold | :00:45. | :00:51.
calculation. This was among the worst terrorist incidents we have | :00:52. | :00:55.
ever experienced in the United Kingdom, and although it is not the | :00:56. | :00:59.
first time Manchester has suffered in this way, it is a worse attack | :01:00. | :01:05.
this city has experienced and the worst ever to head the north of | :01:06. | :01:10.
England. The police and security services are working at speed to | :01:11. | :01:15.
establish the complete picture, but I wanted to tell you what I can at | :01:16. | :01:22.
this stage. At 1033 last night, the police were called to report an | :01:23. | :01:28.
explosion at Manchester Arena, in Manchester city centre, near | :01:29. | :01:33.
Victoria train station. We now know that a single terrorist detonated | :01:34. | :01:36.
his improvised explosive device near one of the exits of the venue, | :01:37. | :01:41.
deliberately choosing the time and place to cause maximum carnage and | :01:42. | :01:49.
to kill and injure indiscriminately. The explosion coincided with the | :01:50. | :01:53.
inclusion of a pop concert which was attended by many young families and | :01:54. | :02:01.
groups of children. All I saw terrorism are cowardly attacks on | :02:02. | :02:05.
innocent people, but this attack stands out for its appalling, | :02:06. | :02:12.
sickening cowardice. Deliberately tagging and Saint, defence the | :02:13. | :02:17.
children and young people who should have been enjoying one of the most | :02:18. | :02:21.
memorable nights of their lives. As things stand, I can tell you that in | :02:22. | :02:26.
addition to the attacker, 22 people have died and 59 people had been | :02:27. | :02:33.
injured. Those who write and had I been treated in a different | :02:34. | :02:37.
hospitals across Greater Manchester. Many are being treated for | :02:38. | :02:41.
life-threatening conditions. And we know that among those killed and | :02:42. | :02:49.
injured by many children and young people. We struggle to comprehend | :02:50. | :02:52.
the warped and twisted mind that sees a room packed with young | :02:53. | :02:56.
children not as I seem to cherish, but as an opportunity for carnage, | :02:57. | :03:03.
but we can continue to resolve to thwart such attacks in the future, | :03:04. | :03:07.
to take on and defeat the ideology that often feels as violence, and if | :03:08. | :03:12.
there are tonnes out to be those responsible for that attack, to seek | :03:13. | :03:18.
them out and bring them to justice. The police and security services | :03:19. | :03:21.
believe that the attack was carried out by one man, but they now need to | :03:22. | :03:24.
know why he was acting alone was part of a wider group. It will take | :03:25. | :03:30.
some time to establish these facts, and the investigation will continue. | :03:31. | :03:34.
The police and security services will be given all the resources they | :03:35. | :03:41.
need to complete that task. The police and security services believe | :03:42. | :03:45.
they know the identity of the perpetrator, but at this stage of | :03:46. | :03:47.
the investigations we cannot confirm his name. Their police and emergency | :03:48. | :03:55.
services have, as always, acted with great courage and on behalf of the | :03:56. | :04:02.
country I want to express gratitude to them. They acted in accordance | :04:03. | :04:06.
with the plans you have in place, and the exercises they conducted | :04:07. | :04:09.
test those plans, and they performed with the utmost professionalism. 400 | :04:10. | :04:16.
police officers were involved in the operation through the night, and | :04:17. | :04:19.
many paramedics, doctors and nurses have worked valiantly amateur Matic | :04:20. | :04:25.
and terrible scenes to save lives and care for the wounded. | :04:26. | :04:30.
Significant resources have been deployed to the police investigation | :04:31. | :04:36.
and continue to be visible patrols around Manchester, which include the | :04:37. | :04:41.
deployment of armed officers. For people who live and work in | :04:42. | :04:45.
Manchester, there remains a large cauldron in place and I Manchester | :04:46. | :04:48.
Arena Victoria Station, which will be in place for some time. The | :04:49. | :04:53.
station is closed and will remain closed well a detailed forensic | :04:54. | :04:58.
search is underway. We know that many friends and relatives of people | :04:59. | :05:01.
caught up in the attack are still trying to find out what has happened | :05:02. | :05:05.
to their children, brothers and sisters, parents and loved ones, | :05:06. | :05:12.
salt, please, think of those people who are experiencing unimaginable | :05:13. | :05:17.
worry, and if you have any information at all relating to the | :05:18. | :05:20.
attack, please contact Greater Manchester Police. The threat level | :05:21. | :05:26.
remains that Syria. That means that a terrorist attack means highly | :05:27. | :05:36.
likely. -- remains at saviour. We will continue SS this thread today | :05:37. | :05:43.
and and the days ahead. Later today, I will travel to Manchester to meet | :05:44. | :05:47.
the Chief Constable of Greater Manchester Police, Ian Hopkins, the | :05:48. | :05:53.
mayor of greater amount to, Andy Burnham, and members of the | :05:54. | :05:57.
emergency services who came to Manchester's aid in the moment of | :05:58. | :06:02.
need. As I announced last night, the general election campaign has been | :06:03. | :06:06.
suspended. I will cheer another meeting of Cobra later today. A | :06:07. | :06:12.
terrible moments like this, it is cast before leaders, politicians and | :06:13. | :06:15.
others to condemn the perpetrators and to declare that the terrorists | :06:16. | :06:18.
will not win. But the fact that we have been you before and the fact | :06:19. | :06:23.
that we need to say this again does not make it any less true. For as | :06:24. | :06:30.
often as we experience but the worst of humanity in Manchester last | :06:31. | :06:34.
night, we also saw the best. The cowardice of the attacker met the | :06:35. | :06:38.
bravery of the emergency services and the people of Manchester. The | :06:39. | :06:44.
attempt to divide is met countless acts of kindness that brought people | :06:45. | :06:50.
closer together, and in the days ahead, those must be the things we | :06:51. | :06:55.
remember. The images we hold in our mind should not be those of | :06:56. | :07:00.
senseless slaughter, but of the ordinary men and women who bid | :07:01. | :07:04.
concerns about their own safety to one side and rushed to help. The men | :07:05. | :07:10.
and women of the emergency services, who tirelessly to bring comfort to | :07:11. | :07:17.
help anti-serum lives. Of the messages of solidarity and hope, of | :07:18. | :07:23.
all those who open their homes to the victims. They are the images | :07:24. | :07:26.
that embody the spirit of Manchester and the spirit of Britain. S Bennett | :07:27. | :07:31.
that two years of conflict and terrorism has never been broken and | :07:32. | :07:38.
will never be broken. There will be difficult days ahead. We offer our | :07:39. | :07:43.
thoughts and prayers to the family and friends of those affected. We | :07:44. | :07:49.
offer our full support to the authorities, the emergency and the | :07:50. | :07:52.
security services as a go about their work, and we all, every single | :07:53. | :07:58.
one of us, stand with the people of Manchester at this terrible time. | :07:59. | :08:06.
And today, letters remember those those who died and let us celebrate | :08:07. | :08:11.
those who helped, safe in the knowledge that the terrorists will | :08:12. | :08:15.
never won, and our values, our country, and our way of life will | :08:16. | :08:24.
always prevail. | :08:25. | :08:30. |
