This is Business Briefing. | 0:00:14 | 0:00:15
I'm Sally Bundock. | 0:00:15 | 0:00:17
Finding a new home. | 0:00:17 | 0:00:18
Two important EU agencies
will decide where to move today, | 0:00:18 | 0:00:21
as they leave London after Brexit. | 0:00:21 | 0:00:31
And imagine sending your child off
for an education in gaming. | 0:00:31 | 0:00:34
In Singapore, the idea is gaining
respect and even support | 0:00:34 | 0:00:36
from the government. | 0:00:36 | 0:00:37
And on the markets the euro sinks
in response to the collapse | 0:00:37 | 0:00:40
of coalition talks in Germany. | 0:00:40 | 0:00:42
This as share markets in Asia also
starting the week on the slide - | 0:00:42 | 0:00:46
we'll fill you in on
all you need to know. | 0:00:46 | 0:00:49
It's a critical day for Brexit
negotiations with Theresa May's | 0:01:02 | 0:01:05
cabinet meeting to discuss
an improved divorce bill - | 0:01:05 | 0:01:09
but no doubt they will discuss
at length the developments | 0:01:09 | 0:01:12
in Germany overnight and what this
means for the Brexit timetable | 0:01:12 | 0:01:15
and its impact on negotiations. | 0:01:15 | 0:01:17
In a moment we'll be live
in Brussels for analysis on this. | 0:01:17 | 0:01:20
But also we must mention the fate
of two major European agencies | 0:01:21 | 0:01:24
will be decided on today. | 0:01:24 | 0:01:26
The European Medicines Agency
and European Banking Authority | 0:01:26 | 0:01:31
currently reside in London -
which will no longer be part | 0:01:31 | 0:01:37
of the EU from the end
of March 2019. | 0:01:37 | 0:01:39
The 27 member states will vote
later on which cities | 0:01:39 | 0:01:42
will become their new homes. | 0:01:42 | 0:01:43
Joe Lynam has more. | 0:01:44 | 0:01:59
I am hoping to be able to speak to
him in just a moment. He is joining | 0:01:59 | 0:02:03
us from Brussels. Here he is. Peter,
good to see you. Let's start with | 0:02:03 | 0:02:09
the situation in the Brexit
negotiations in Germany. Your | 0:02:09 | 0:02:14
thoughts on the outcome of the
coalition talks? They are collapsing | 0:02:14 | 0:02:18
and as we have been hearing earlier,
there is a real concern about what | 0:02:18 | 0:02:22
the outlook is for Germany. Indeed,
it looks like Germany isn't as solid | 0:02:22 | 0:02:30
as what it looks like in terms of
politics and of course the key | 0:02:30 | 0:02:35
reason for that is Angela Merkel's
decision in 2015 which has unleashed | 0:02:35 | 0:02:46
a lot of criticism and really
destabilised German politics with | 0:02:46 | 0:02:53
the immersion of right-wing populist
into the Bundestag. What we | 0:02:53 | 0:02:58
basically see if the centre-right
Liberal SDP is not willing to form a | 0:02:58 | 0:03:04
coalition with the Greens the coast
they have hardened their stance on | 0:03:04 | 0:03:08
Asylum and refugees and Angela
Merkel is basically not willing to | 0:03:08 | 0:03:13
do that. She wants to include the
Greens so for now, it is very early | 0:03:13 | 0:03:21
days, we have to see if it will
return to the negotiating table. I | 0:03:21 | 0:03:26
won't be surprised if that somehow
happens. But one option could be a | 0:03:26 | 0:03:34
minority government between Angela
Merkel and the Greens but then | 0:03:34 | 0:03:38
again, that the problem that
Merkel's Bavarian allies who also | 0:03:38 | 0:03:42
want a more right-wing refugee
policy, might not be willing to do | 0:03:42 | 0:03:46
that so there is even the
possibility that we will see Merkel | 0:03:46 | 0:03:52
basically leaving German politics
because her person makes it | 0:03:52 | 0:03:59
impossible to include a coalition.
Well, Mexit is not something I have | 0:03:59 | 0:04:09
heard before. Talk through what that
would mean for the eurozone, going | 0:04:09 | 0:04:13
forward. Without the strength and
leadership of Angela Merkel. And | 0:04:13 | 0:04:17
also, the Brexit negotiations. I
don't think we should dramatise it. | 0:04:17 | 0:04:21
All in all, there is a consensus.
Even in Germany, how these | 0:04:21 | 0:04:30
negotiations need to be conducted is
important. I think even a --I think | 0:04:30 | 0:04:41
even a caretaker German government
needs to make some pretty obvious | 0:04:41 | 0:04:44
decisions. It is not clear how any
other German government would have | 0:04:44 | 0:04:50
materially different stance on
Brexit. With regards to the | 0:04:50 | 0:04:53
eurozone, indeed a German caretaker
government cannot decide what the | 0:04:53 | 0:05:04
French President Emmanuel Macron has
decided which is to concentrate more | 0:05:04 | 0:05:07
money and power at the Central level
in the eurozone. You know what? Even | 0:05:07 | 0:05:12
if there is a coalition German
government, even from the | 0:05:12 | 0:05:16
centre-left, I don't think they
would be happy if it was just | 0:05:16 | 0:05:19
decided like that but there will be
more transfers in the eurozone, it | 0:05:19 | 0:05:23
will most likely be because of the
fact that they are back at the edge | 0:05:23 | 0:05:28
of a cliff again. That's only when
these decisions are being made and I | 0:05:28 | 0:05:32
don't think these decisions are very
sustainable because they always | 0:05:32 | 0:05:36
provoke anger. The countries that
are obliged to accent the conditions | 0:05:36 | 0:05:47
to the payment are not happy either.
This is why politicians only | 0:05:47 | 0:05:51
grudgingly decide them. Don't expect
these big eurozone reforms to come | 0:05:51 | 0:05:58
any time soon. For now, thank you
the from the think tank in Brussels. | 0:05:58 | 0:06:06
Of course, this is a story we will
discuss in the news briefing. It is | 0:06:06 | 0:06:10
all over the media today. Some other
stories today in business. | 0:06:10 | 0:06:13
Japan's exports rose for the 11th
consecutive month in October | 0:06:13 | 0:06:16
on robust shipments of automobile
and electronic parts. | 0:06:16 | 0:06:18
Let's go to our Asia business hub
where Sharanjit Leyl | 0:06:18 | 0:06:20
is following the story. | 0:06:20 | 0:06:26
Nice to see you, Sharanjit Leyl full
is not it would seem that this is | 0:06:26 | 0:06:31
the backbone of Japan's export
market. Electronics and cars. That's | 0:06:31 | 0:06:38
right, Sally. It is also the risk
global demand that is leading to | 0:06:38 | 0:06:43
that growth. It is the cars, the
electronics, that has led to the | 0:06:43 | 0:06:48
uptick in exports for Japan. Also
imports grew with oil. We saw | 0:06:48 | 0:06:56
exports rise in 14% in October from
the previous year and imports were | 0:06:56 | 0:07:00
up nearly 19% from last year. It was
really things like, looking at the | 0:07:00 | 0:07:05
breakdown of shipments of cars to
Australia, liquid crystal device | 0:07:05 | 0:07:10
production equipment and plastics to
China, that led to the gain in | 0:07:10 | 0:07:15
exports and crucially, shipments to
China, in fact, the largest trading | 0:07:15 | 0:07:20
partner, rose 26% in October from
last year to well over Y1 trillion | 0:07:20 | 0:07:25
which was the highest value on
record. Really, all of this robust | 0:07:25 | 0:07:29
growth has led to gains for other
regions in the economy because | 0:07:29 | 0:07:36
Thailand's data came out today and
it was also growing faster in the | 0:07:36 | 0:07:41
July- September quarter which was
its highest rate it has grown in 4.5 | 0:07:41 | 0:07:45
years and that is due to more
exports and tourism arrivals. | 0:07:45 | 0:07:49
Generally, this pickup in global
growth is benefiting economies in | 0:07:49 | 0:07:53
this region. To see you. -- good to
see you. | 0:07:53 | 0:07:59
Now let's brief you some
other business stories. | 0:07:59 | 0:08:01
Japanese automaker Honda
is recalling 900,000 units | 0:08:01 | 0:08:03
of this model - the Odyssey minivan,
due to reports of injuries | 0:08:03 | 0:08:06
blamed on faulty seats. | 0:08:06 | 0:08:07
It is just the latest Japanese
manufacturer to find itself facing | 0:08:07 | 0:08:10
quality-control issues. | 0:08:10 | 0:08:14
Toshiba board members have approved
a plan to raise more than $5 billion | 0:08:14 | 0:08:17
from a sale of new shares. | 0:08:17 | 0:08:19
It's a key step that would allow
the troubled conglomerate to remain | 0:08:19 | 0:08:22
a publicly traded company
even if the sale of its chip | 0:08:22 | 0:08:25
unit is delayed. | 0:08:25 | 0:08:26
Toshiba needs to raise almost $7
billion by the end of March to plug | 0:08:26 | 0:08:30
a balance sheet hole left
by its bankrupt U.S. | 0:08:30 | 0:08:32
Nuclear power business. | 0:08:32 | 0:08:33
If they don't, the multinational
conglomerate will be delisted | 0:08:33 | 0:08:35
from the Tokyo Stock Exchange. | 0:08:36 | 0:08:40
A career in gaming would once have
been unthinkable in Asia. | 0:08:45 | 0:08:48
But e-sports is slowly gaining
recognition and will even be | 0:08:48 | 0:08:57
included as a medal sport
at the Asian Games in 2022. | 0:08:57 | 0:09:00
And with the global e-sports market
forecast to hit $1.5 billion | 0:09:00 | 0:09:03
within three years, Singapore wants
to help train new gamers | 0:09:03 | 0:09:05
to go professional. | 0:09:05 | 0:09:06
If they make it, champions can win
huge prizes worth millions | 0:09:06 | 0:09:09
of dollars. | 0:09:09 | 0:09:12
I see a lot of | 0:09:40 | 0:09:42
I see a lot of traditional gamers
and how they work as a team and stay | 0:09:42 | 0:09:45
together, lived together and train
together. They get to fly around | 0:09:45 | 0:09:51
show cast their skills and talents.
-- showcase. | 0:09:51 | 0:10:10
I was a competitive game and then I
realised that actually stronger in | 0:10:29 | 0:10:33
the strategy and my reflexes aren't
as fast as other players so I | 0:10:33 | 0:10:40
thought, why not use what I have two
educate more gamers? -- what I have, | 0:10:40 | 0:10:52
to educate more gamers. The oral lot
more oximetry rolls out there. -- | 0:10:52 | 0:11:00
auxiliaries. If you make the match
exciting, the event producers, | 0:11:00 | 0:11:08
coaches, trainers, all of these
essential roles. | 0:11:08 | 0:11:12
That's it for Business
Briefing this hour - | 0:11:27 | 0:11:30
But before we go -
here are the markets. | 0:11:30 | 0:11:34
Asia is under way down. -- on the
way down. The main market in Japan | 0:11:34 | 0:11:42
was also down around about 0.5%. | 0:11:42 | 0:11:46
Up next - Newsbriefing -
