Every year, as spring comes knocking on the door,

:00:00.:00:32.

Barcelona opens its gates to the Mobile World Congress,

:00:33.:00:34.

a place where anyone with anything mobile comes to flaunt their mobile

:00:35.:00:37.

Almost all the biggest mobile manufacturers,

:00:38.:00:44.

with one notable exception, Apple, launched their latest

:00:45.:00:47.

devices at this event, and this year is no different.

:00:48.:00:53.

And in fact, if there is one company that can rival

:00:54.:01:00.

Apple in terms of high-profile product launches these days,

:01:01.:01:03.

This is the new Samsung phone, the S7 and S7 Edge.

:01:04.:01:06.

More of an improvement than a complete

:01:07.:01:09.

redesign on last year's model, the S6.

:01:10.:01:10.

But it does have some favourite features from older models too.

:01:11.:01:13.

All hail the return of the much-missed

:01:14.:01:15.

And, yes, Samsung is once again waterproof, it is true.

:01:16.:01:26.

Maybe the most notable new feature is the game recording mode,

:01:27.:01:29.

which means you can record as you play

:01:30.:01:31.

your favourite title, a game caster's dream.

:01:32.:01:41.

The S7 Edge now curves all the way around, should you care,

:01:42.:01:44.

and it even has a ruler, a killer app,

:01:45.:01:47.

ladies and gentlemen - until someone invents,

:01:48.:01:48.

LG also unveiled its new flagship device, the G5.

:01:49.:01:56.

This is a modular phone where the bottom slides out to

:01:57.:01:59.

make space for other attachments, like this music player

:02:00.:02:02.

by Bang Olufsen, which can play back hi-fi audio.

:02:03.:02:04.

And a camera attachment, LG Cam Plus,

:02:05.:02:06.

essentially reshapes the device for a better camera grip,

:02:07.:02:08.

gives the phone extra juice and has a physical

:02:09.:02:11.

In fact there haven't been many other big phone announcements

:02:12.:02:23.

Sony has launched a selection of mid-range

:02:24.:02:29.

Huawei, now the third biggest manufacturer of mobile

:02:30.:02:37.

phones in the world, has no new phones on show but it has

:02:38.:02:41.

launched this new tablet-computer hybrid

:02:42.:02:42.

Is that the surface pro? I hear you ask.

:02:43.:02:45.

No, it's the Mate Book, pretty similar to Microsoft's

:02:46.:02:47.

Although it is a bit nicer, a bit lighter and a bit slimmer.

:02:48.:02:51.

Yeah, so it seems the interest in new tablets

:02:52.:02:53.

The devices are no longer flying off the shelves,

:02:54.:02:58.

and so the industry is trying to refocus its efforts

:02:59.:03:01.

LJ Rich and Kate Russell are on the MWC

:03:02.:03:14.

show floor looking at some of the possibilities.

:03:15.:03:16.

Internet of Things is the buzz phrase flying around this place

:03:17.:03:18.

Does anyone actually know what it means yet?

:03:19.:03:21.

It means everything you have and everything you see will be

:03:22.:03:32.

Well, technology is going very fast and

:03:33.:03:37.

wearable devices, this is the future, I guess.

:03:38.:03:41.

Why would you connect your toothbrush?

:03:42.:03:43.

Because my dentist says it's going to be good

:03:44.:03:45.

Everywhere you look there seems to be somebody

:03:46.:03:50.

somewhere claiming that their device is smarter than the next.

:03:51.:03:56.

The connected fridge horse is still being flogged with food

:03:57.:03:58.

ordering through a built-in tablet, though

:03:59.:04:00.

why this is better than using a regular tablet

:04:01.:04:03.

When we get connected food containers it might well be able

:04:04.:04:10.

to tell you when the milk has gone off.

:04:11.:04:12.

You know, in case your nose and your taste buds suddenly stopped working.

:04:13.:04:21.

We are used to seeing contactless payment symbols on our credit

:04:22.:04:25.

and debit cards these days but MasterCard are stuffing

:04:26.:04:27.

this technology into all kinds of wearables.

:04:28.:04:29.

I could pay with this dress, I could pay with a glove,

:04:30.:04:32.

Michael is actually wearing an NFC payment band

:04:33.:04:43.

that is measuring his heartbeat to authenticate the transaction.

:04:44.:04:47.

This will give us as consumers much more

:04:48.:04:50.

peace of mind, especially when it comes to making bigger purchases

:04:51.:04:54.

The reason I can't where it is as soon as I take it off it's

:04:55.:04:59.

not going to be valid any more and I won't be able to clear any

:05:00.:05:03.

transactions, so I'm afraid, Michael, you're coming with me.

:05:04.:05:06.

And for the selfie obsessed, your face could soon be

:05:07.:05:09.

your fortune as biometrics replaces the MasterCard secure code

:05:10.:05:11.

by authenticating a transaction with a

:05:12.:05:13.

Shoppers need to blink to prove to MasterCard they are alive.

:05:14.:05:46.

This whole thing is solar powered. The idea is that these grapes will

:05:47.:05:51.

be able to tell the farmer when it is time to pick them! The software

:05:52.:05:58.

connects this data alongside other things, like sunlight intensity, and

:05:59.:06:03.

this gets them to be farmer's mobile device. It doesn't stop there.

:06:04.:06:08.

Monitoring things like this helps farmers know what the plant

:06:09.:06:14.

experienced. Once more data is gathered the software should be able

:06:15.:06:18.

to predict the quality and quantity of the produce. The system is

:06:19.:06:20.

currently on trial in for German vineyards.

:06:21.:06:30.

So we are seeing improvements in phone screens, phone

:06:31.:06:33.

One thing we have not seen much change

:06:34.:06:36.

in over the years is phone batteries.

:06:37.:06:37.

They are pretty much all still rechargeable lithium-ion

:06:38.:06:40.

Researchers at the Graphene Institute in the UK have taken this

:06:41.:06:43.

phone's battery out and replaced it with a super capacitor

:06:44.:06:47.

Graphene is this wonder material that everyone

:06:48.:06:51.

It is really conductive, it's flexible,

:06:52.:06:56.

And it turns out it can store a vast amount of energy too and absorb that

:06:57.:07:03.

A few seconds of juice from the mains can keep

:07:04.:07:07.

The vision is that one day our mobile devices could have

:07:08.:07:11.

batteries, which not only charge super quickly but also last a lot

:07:12.:07:14.

Here at Mobile World Congress graphene is making an appearance.

:07:15.:07:29.

Like this graphene-coated film that could be used

:07:30.:07:31.

There is a small area here dedicated to these

:07:32.:07:35.

How about this to feed our ever-hungry mobile

:07:36.:07:39.

It doesn't mean you can charge your phone in five minutes,

:07:40.:07:50.

but you can then plug your phone into it on the go.

:07:51.:07:52.

This is the first prototype and will only charge a large phone

:07:53.:07:56.

By next year they hope to have the third prototype out

:07:57.:08:02.

which will be able to fully charge it.

:08:03.:08:04.

Inside the battery pack is layers, about 25 layers

:08:05.:08:08.

That allows this battery pack to charge super fast.

:08:09.:08:21.

You can then pop it in your bag and take it with you.

:08:22.:08:27.

Another possible solution is a hydrogen fuel cell battery.

:08:28.:08:29.

With something this size, think of it

:08:30.:08:31.

like a mini power station using hydrogen to make power.

:08:32.:08:34.

So it's not refillable or rechargeable, you

:08:35.:08:35.

would buy replacement batteries like this and this could last up

:08:36.:08:38.

to a week alongside your typical lithium-ion battery in here.

:08:39.:08:46.

The great thing about these is it to be

:08:47.:08:49.

powered completely off the grid and it's a green energy source.

:08:50.:09:02.

One of the problems with VR is its traditionally quite a lonely

:09:03.:09:05.

Before we do we are going to do some training so that you are accustomed

:09:06.:09:16.

LJ? Yes?

:09:17.:09:20.

You've now been promoted to lieutenant.

:09:21.:09:25.

This is a space landing game where you read instructions out loud.

:09:26.:09:28.

Some of them might be for you, some for

:09:29.:09:30.

We interact together to land our rover.

:09:31.:09:38.

Looking at each panel activates it and moving the controllers in front

:09:39.:09:41.

of me changes the value.

:09:42.:09:46.

It's a bit like the collaborative gaming app Space Team.

:09:47.:09:49.

This is the first demo that I've played with in VR that actually

:09:50.:09:57.

is sharing the space with other people.

:09:58.:09:59.

And I can see this becoming quite a thing.

:10:00.:10:03.

I've always said that VR is lonely, not any more.

:10:04.:10:12.

That's pretty much it for our coverage of the Mobile

:10:13.:10:14.

But just on that thought of virtual reality, you may have noticed

:10:15.:10:18.

there is not that much content available for your VR

:10:19.:10:20.

Samsung has just announced the Gear 360, which is a 360 camera,

:10:21.:10:27.

so you can record your surroundings and then watch it back

:10:28.:10:29.

It's two lenses, one pointing that way, one pointing that way.

:10:30.:10:33.

They are both really fish-eye lenses, and so

:10:34.:10:35.

together they give you a 360 picture, which you can see

:10:36.:10:38.

being streamed live over Wi-Fi direct to

:10:39.:10:40.

This is one of a few 360 cameras around.

:10:41.:10:47.

Another is LG's newly announced 360 Cam,

:10:48.:10:57.

catchy, which records video and stitches it into a 360 sphere

:10:58.:11:00.

Users of Samsung's Gear 360 will have to transfer the recording

:11:01.:11:04.

That's what's doing the stitching of Talia filming some

:11:05.:11:09.

360 footage of Talia filming some 360 footage.

:11:10.:11:13.

Wow, that was all rather matter wasn't it?

:11:14.:11:15.

And who knows, this may be the thing that

:11:16.:11:18.
