This is E3, the biggest video game show on Earth. | :00:29. | :00:35.
Every June, the Convention Centre in downtown Los Angeles fills | :00:36. | :00:38.
This is where the next year's big releases are announced, | :00:39. | :00:45.
with high energy, much fanfare, and gimmicks galore. | :00:46. | :00:50.
You can race a car, visit a haunted house, | :00:51. | :00:52.
You can pick yourself up a swag bag... | :00:53. | :01:03.
For as long as I can remember, all of the big games companies have | :01:04. | :01:13.
scrabbled for our attention at this press-and-games-industry-only event. | :01:14. | :01:16.
But times are a changing, and not every company is happy | :01:17. | :01:18.
shouting over all this noise when they could have their own event | :01:19. | :01:21.
a bit later and control the message better. | :01:22. | :01:27.
Now, there are a number of big names which are usually at E3 but aren't | :01:28. | :01:31.
here this year, Electronic Arts, Activision, and Disney, for example. | :01:32. | :01:37.
They don't have booths on the show floor. | :01:38. | :01:39.
Turnout's still pretty decent, though. | :01:40. | :01:41.
There are still plenty of big hitters here. | :01:42. | :01:45.
So joining me on the floor are two awesome end bosses. | :01:46. | :01:51.
Colossal Kate Russell, and monstrous Marc Cieslak. | :01:52. | :01:53.
And I wanted to start with something I think is really innovative. | :01:54. | :01:58.
Not VR in itself, but the fact that someone's finally giving you at home | :01:59. | :02:01.
the opportunity to experience what I'm experience when I stick | :02:02. | :02:04.
You can now see the world as I'm seeing it! | :02:05. | :02:16.
Well, that's all very well for you at home | :02:17. | :02:26.
but what we are experiencing is Spen prancing around in a green cupboard. | :02:27. | :02:29.
But what this does help to demonstrate is one of the big themes | :02:30. | :02:34.
That is that there is are tonnes and tonnes and tonnes of virtual | :02:35. | :02:38.
Now that gamers can finally get their hands on virtual reality | :02:39. | :02:44.
headsets, the games industry has revealed what you'll actually be | :02:45. | :02:46.
This includes old school classics like Battle Zone, | :02:47. | :02:50.
As well as recruiting Star Trek cast members, | :02:51. | :03:07.
past and present, to show off Ubisoft's Star Trek Bridge | :03:08. | :03:09.
Here, four players adopt the role of different Bridge officers, | :03:10. | :03:18.
Most of the gameplay mostly consists of operating controls. | :03:19. | :03:21.
Perhaps not as thrilling as a real away mission. | :03:22. | :03:28.
As soon as you can get us out of here I will be most grateful. | :03:29. | :03:34.
Boldly going where few games designers have gone before means | :03:35. | :03:37.
new ways of thinking about games and how we play them are crucial | :03:38. | :03:40.
for these virtual experiences to work. | :03:41. | :03:44.
Sony is going all in with virtual reality. | :03:45. | :03:46.
It is a whole bunch of different experiences across different genres | :03:47. | :03:50.
which are meant to show off what VR is capable of. | :03:51. | :03:53.
They are the kind of games which can only be played wearing a headset | :03:54. | :03:57.
Most of the games in here have been teased over the last couple | :03:58. | :04:02.
of years, but there are two experiences which are completely | :04:03. | :04:04.
This is Scavenger's Odyssey, a shooter. | :04:05. | :04:15.
Looks like some kind of mechanised suit. | :04:16. | :04:18.
The targeting is done by simply looking at where I wanna shoot. | :04:19. | :04:21.
But this is where you start to get a sense that this is a game designed | :04:22. | :04:25.
When I look around there isn't really any "up" there isn't | :04:26. | :04:36.
It is a bit how I imagine a fly must see the world, | :04:37. | :04:41.
being able to jump onto any surface at any angle, | :04:42. | :04:44.
which at times can be a tiny bit disorientating. | :04:45. | :04:46.
This game is Danger Ball, a futuristic sport. | :04:47. | :04:48.
Now, I don't need a controller for this at all. | :04:49. | :04:51.
And this allows me to move this bat around. | :04:52. | :04:55.
There's more to it than that, though. | :04:56. | :04:57.
You can add spin by flicking the ball when it gets | :04:58. | :05:00.
Now it's my turn to do VR once again. | :05:01. | :05:07.
Four headsets hanging from these spindles, | :05:08. | :05:11.
and the idea is several people can take part in the same | :05:12. | :05:14.
And, although it can be a game, what they are actually aiming | :05:15. | :05:18.
for is an interactive theatre experience, where we all take part | :05:19. | :05:21.
and solve different puzzles and share an experience. | :05:22. | :05:24.
For example, over here, I can pick up this ball. | :05:25. | :05:26.
So, obviously, it is a work in progress. | :05:27. | :05:34.
But the idea is that in the future you can have actors also taking part | :05:35. | :05:38.
in the experience, taking you through different rooms | :05:39. | :05:40.
and helping you to solve different puzzles, for example. | :05:41. | :05:43.
At the moment, I have to say it is both weird and interesting. | :05:44. | :05:46.
The first big announcement came as no real surprise. | :05:47. | :05:55.
With news of the slimmer, more design-centric Xbox OneS having | :05:56. | :05:58.
Serving up 4K HDR gaming, and a customisable controller that | :05:59. | :06:06.
can suit even the wildest of tastes, at $299, this midcycle release may | :06:07. | :06:09.
leave a sour taste in the mouths of families who bought | :06:10. | :06:12.
into the chunkier machine just a few years ago. | :06:13. | :06:20.
The game footage started rolling with some big titles on the slate, | :06:21. | :06:23.
all hoping to win Xbox back some of its edge. | :06:24. | :06:26.
Pushing the cross-platform agenda is at the heart of Microsoft's drive | :06:27. | :06:29.
to bring Xbox and Windows 10 players together in a slieu | :06:30. | :06:32.
Forza Horizon 3 got pulses racing with a demo of its four-player | :06:33. | :06:44.
campaign mode on Xbox and PC, scheduled for September release. | :06:45. | :06:54.
There's been a lot of speculation about whether there would be any | :06:55. | :06:57.
significant hardware upgrades announced here today. | :06:58. | :06:58.
And with leaked information about the Xbox OneS coming out | :06:59. | :07:01.
in the last 24 hours or so, slimmer sleeker, more design-led, | :07:02. | :07:04.
you would be forgiven for thinking that was going to be it. | :07:05. | :07:07.
But then, right at the end of the conference, Phil Spencer | :07:08. | :07:10.
Project Scorpio will be the next edition to the Xbox family, | :07:11. | :07:15.
and it is ultimately the next step in delivering our vision | :07:16. | :07:18.
of the future of gaming beyond generations. | :07:19. | :07:26.
Being released next autumn, this beast of a box will support | :07:27. | :07:28.
high-definition 4K gaming and is VR ready, packing the most powerful | :07:29. | :07:31.
graphics card ever put inside a consol. | :07:32. | :07:33.
Microsoft is keeping its options open when it comes to VR headsets. | :07:34. | :07:37.
Our consoles also run on Windows 10, so all of that innovation | :07:38. | :07:40.
and creativity that is happening, we wanted to capture it | :07:41. | :07:43.
We needed the computing capabilities of the six terraflops | :07:44. | :07:46.
of Project Scorpio to make that possible. | :07:47. | :07:49.
So, for us, our strategy is to continue to embrace | :07:50. | :07:52.
the incredible community of VR development on Windows and just | :07:53. | :07:54.
Microsoft calls it "choice," but are console owners really ready | :07:55. | :07:59.
to upgrade their machines every year in the same way PC owners do? | :08:00. | :08:06.
Fans of the platform can at least take some solace hearing that games | :08:07. | :08:09.
will be playable across all three consoles and Windows 10 PCs, | :08:10. | :08:19.
too, without having to buy another copy. | :08:20. | :08:21.
They are just going to look a lot sweeter on the new box next year. | :08:22. | :08:42.
LA's historic Shrine Auditorium played host to the PlayStation | :08:43. | :08:44.
event, which bombastically kicked off with an orchestra playing | :08:45. | :08:46.
the theme to the new Norse-inspired God of War title. | :08:47. | :08:49.
The event then continued with a brief look at Quantic Dream's | :08:50. | :08:52.
Please, you've got to save my little girl. | :08:53. | :08:55.
Sony beefed up its VR credentials by announcing the launch date | :08:56. | :09:03.
I am happy to announce that, on 13 October, PlayStation VR | :09:04. | :09:10.
will make its debut in the United States. | :09:11. | :09:14.
As well as announcing 50 games to come out with the thing, | :09:15. | :09:17.
including Resident Evil 7, and VR experiences for Call | :09:18. | :09:19.
of Duty Infinite, and Final Fantasy 15 VR experience. | :09:20. | :09:33.
The biggest applause of the show was reserved for games design legend | :09:34. | :09:36.
Kojima showed off a cryptic trailer for a game featuring the walking | :09:37. | :09:45.
dead, and lots of dead crabs and fish. | :09:46. | :09:47.
And the hits kept on coming, from crowdpleasing fan favourites, | :09:48. | :09:59.
to lots of new and original games, which the audience | :10:00. | :10:02.
at the Shrine Auditorium absolutely lapped up. | :10:03. | :10:06.
In contrast to the Xbox show this morning, where Microsoft teased | :10:07. | :10:09.
new technology, Sony has chosen to show new games. | :10:10. | :10:11.
However, there is a new, upgraded PS4 in the works. | :10:12. | :10:17.
You just cannot see it at this year's E3. | :10:18. | :10:20.
You have an upgraded PS4 in the works. | :10:21. | :10:22.
Why are we not seeing that at E3 this year? | :10:23. | :10:29.
Just as was the case with PlayStation VR, | :10:30. | :10:33.
we feel that it is important to show people the new hardware, | :10:34. | :10:36.
the new platform, when we have the full range of experiences that | :10:37. | :10:39.
But the high end PS4, code-named Neo, that we are working | :10:40. | :10:47.
on, is an addition to the existing lineup, not a replacement. | :10:48. | :10:50.
And we also were looking at the way in which, | :10:51. | :10:52.
perhaps, the technology and innovation cadence has changed | :10:53. | :10:55.
And perhaps we have an opportunity to move slightly away from just | :10:56. | :10:58.
a static console, that remains absolutely the same for, | :10:59. | :11:00.
you know, a period of six, seven, eight years, and perhaps offer, | :11:01. | :11:04.
in addition to the current PlayStation 4, something extra. | :11:05. | :11:12.
So, as far as PlayStation and Xbox are concerned, | :11:13. | :11:15.
there will be more new machines on the horizon than console | :11:16. | :11:17.
Much more in the full version but that is it for the short version. | :11:18. | :11:35.
You can find some shenanigans on Twitter as well. Next week, we are | :11:36. | :11:43.
back in China. It is non-stop. We will see you then. | :11:44. | :11:46. |
