Hello. Tonight, we are New Walk Museum in Leicester. Coming up in

:00:00.:00:13.

the next half`hour. Ripping up roads and ruining lives, landslides can be

:00:14.:00:16.

lethal. A lot of people are telling us to get back. They were telling us

:00:17.:00:22.

not to go that was the big as my daughter under there, I was going.

:00:23.:00:26.

We are with the world experts trying to predict the future.

:00:27.:00:32.

Also tonight, the planning round in leafy Leicestershire as locals

:00:33.:00:35.

accuse the National Trust of putting profit before preservation. They

:00:36.:00:40.

don't need to behave like a money grabbing large corporation.

:00:41.:00:47.

And the thrills and spills of junior drag racing. When you launch, you

:00:48.:00:53.

are like that down the track and you can see your wheels vibrating. It is

:00:54.:01:01.

really cool. I am Marie Ashby and this is Inside Out East Midlands.

:01:02.:01:10.

Landslides, we call them an act of God. Nothing we can do. New

:01:11.:01:15.

technology means we might not be able to stop landslides from

:01:16.:01:17.

happening but we can do more to protect ourselves. I have been with

:01:18.:01:22.

the East Midlands experts trying to lead the way in forecasting the

:01:23.:01:27.

future. In one go, thousands of tonnes of rock have fallen onto the

:01:28.:01:32.

beach below. In fact, you cannot see the beach any more because it is

:01:33.:01:40.

covered in rubble. Suddenly, the whole rock slipped down about seven

:01:41.:01:47.

feet at one go. Landslides make the news and recently they have made the

:01:48.:01:51.

news more often than ever before. This is what is left of our garden.

:01:52.:02:00.

Staggering! They close roads, terrible pipelines, buckle

:02:01.:02:05.

railways. It started when I train driver felt a bump in the line. It

:02:06.:02:09.

has grown to this. The land is still moving.

:02:10.:02:15.

And landslides can kill. I looked up, he said, and saw half the entire

:02:16.:02:21.

cliff face collapse. A lot of people were telling us to get back, not to

:02:22.:02:26.

go there. It was my daughter under there, I was going.

:02:27.:02:36.

It is exactly one year since the Blackman family from Heanor came to

:02:37.:02:46.

Dorset on holiday. 22`year`old Charlotte had just graduated with a

:02:47.:02:52.

first class honours degree. She was planning a career in teaching.

:02:53.:02:58.

She was away is a very happy, jolly person. She was everybody's friend.

:02:59.:03:06.

So that was her motto. Life is too short to be anything but happy. It

:03:07.:03:11.

was a hot day. Charlotte wanted to explore the rock balls. The family

:03:12.:03:24.

say `` rock pools. The first I knew that there was a

:03:25.:03:27.

landslide was a fisherman on the beach. He said that there had been a

:03:28.:03:32.

big landslide. All I could see was planes of smoke. Through the clouds

:03:33.:03:41.

of smoke or dust, it was then running towards me to say that

:03:42.:03:45.

Charlotte was under the rocks. When that came down, I jumped. My dad

:03:46.:03:55.

told me to run so I ran. The rocks nearly got my leg. I was lucky. It

:03:56.:04:05.

doesn't seem that far away, does it? When you try and run down there, it

:04:06.:04:14.

is quite a run. I last saw Charlotte trying to run. She had her head down

:04:15.:04:19.

like that. My feet were bleeding by the time I ran down there and back.

:04:20.:04:27.

It was horrible. Just a few days after we filmed, another section of

:04:28.:04:28.

this cliff collapsed. So what is going on with our

:04:29.:04:43.

changing landscape? I have come to Nottinghamshire. Here at the British

:04:44.:04:49.

Geological Survey, experts have been measuring landslides for nearly 30

:04:50.:04:52.

years and this year their grass are telling them something odd is going

:04:53.:04:58.

on. For the last 12 months, we have seen an unusual year. If we go back

:04:59.:05:03.

to last summer, 2012, we saw a fourfold increased. In December, we

:05:04.:05:09.

saw a six fold increase. In March, we saw another fourfold increase in

:05:10.:05:12.

events. When we look at it compare to our average, over the last six

:05:13.:05:14.

years, to our average, over the last six

:05:15.:05:21.

difference? You can see the blue lines. It is partly to do with the

:05:22.:05:25.

rainfall. We have seen significant rainfall both in summer and winter.

:05:26.:05:30.

These are contributing to the landslide events we have seen. So

:05:31.:05:35.

changing weather patterns don't just affect crops, they are shaping the

:05:36.:05:42.

ground under our feet. It was a wet year 47 years ago as well.

:05:43.:05:48.

A generation perished in Aberfan. In a few minutes, nearly 200 children,

:05:49.:05:57.

happy because they were too start a holiday that afternoon, were

:05:58.:06:03.

engulfed. 1966 was the year that written by Gupta the dangers of

:06:04.:06:08.

landslides. Before Aberfan, it was nobody's responsibility to monitor

:06:09.:06:15.

sites like these. The enquiry heard that there were plenty of warning

:06:16.:06:20.

signs and the National coal board were to blame. It was a disaster

:06:21.:06:24.

that should never have happened. The school lay in the direct path of the

:06:25.:06:30.

disintegrating man`made mountain. After Aberfan, we began monitoring

:06:31.:06:33.

landslide, not just nick coalfields but across the country. This year,

:06:34.:06:37.

when the spoil tip in South Yorkshire began to move, engineers

:06:38.:06:43.

moved quickly to close the nearby railway line. Roe whalers were

:06:44.:06:50.

twisted unbroken by a seismic shift. Heavy rainfall over the

:06:51.:06:55.

winter is almost certainly played a part. The cost of repairing the line

:06:56.:07:02.

has run into tens of millions. Damages to roads and rail lines do

:07:03.:07:09.

not just cost money, they can disrupt peoples lives for years.

:07:10.:07:14.

This is progressing all the time. Sean and his family have big plans

:07:15.:07:18.

when they bought Crag End farm two years ago. On Boxing Day, the road

:07:19.:07:23.

running past the front door began to disappear. Helen and her landslide

:07:24.:07:29.

response team want to find out why. We can't get the guest a school that

:07:30.:07:36.

easily these days. It is six miles around. We were renovating the farm

:07:37.:07:43.

to work on a sustainable basis, so we have some woodland down there and

:07:44.:07:46.

we are cut off from that. The road runs alongside a hill alongside a

:07:47.:07:50.

river. There have been landslides here before but never as bad as

:07:51.:07:54.

this. This is the line of the road here at my feet. Six months ago, the

:07:55.:07:59.

line of the road was up here. The council has dug 24 boreholes to find

:08:00.:08:07.

out what is going on under ground. We have only just opened this. One

:08:08.:08:11.

of the things we are working towards is constructing landslide

:08:12.:08:15.

susceptibility maps, which help people know when they planning

:08:16.:08:18.

future developers where landslides might happen, so the information we

:08:19.:08:24.

collect on a site like this can help us refine our maps as to where

:08:25.:08:30.

landslides might occur in future. Predicting landslides is not easy.

:08:31.:08:34.

Particularly along Britain's crumbling coast. A member of the

:08:35.:08:37.

public has reported a cliff fall 40 miles away at Tynemouth. The team go

:08:38.:08:51.

to investigate, armed with a gadget called a temp three detector. `` ten

:08:52.:08:59.

three macro detector. It is hoped that in the future they

:09:00.:09:16.

will be able to do more to protect landslides `` predict landslides. We

:09:17.:09:23.

hope to be derived daily hazard reports to the public and the

:09:24.:09:28.

media, to help them plan so that the landslides can be avoided. Back in

:09:29.:09:35.

Dorset, Charlotte's family now plan to move her bench closer to home.

:09:36.:09:39.

There are too many unhappy memories here. The coastal path at Burton

:09:40.:09:47.

Bradstock is now closed but people still walk along the beach. It is

:09:48.:09:51.

not the first thing they think about. They think they will have a

:09:52.:09:57.

nice lie down on the beach. You don't think you need to stay away

:09:58.:10:01.

from the cliffs because it is dangerous. It is something you take

:10:02.:10:07.

for granted, that you will be safe. But you should always be very aware,

:10:08.:10:11.

definitely. I don't think I will ever go on holiday where there is

:10:12.:10:18.

any cliffs ever again. You need to be aware that it could happen.

:10:19.:10:27.

Here at New Walk Museum, they will be a permanent gallery showcasing

:10:28.:10:32.

the arts and crafts movement. Ernest Gimson from the family was one of

:10:33.:10:37.

the top international designers at the turn of the 20th century and his

:10:38.:10:41.

work still has influenced the day. So, when the National Trust decided

:10:42.:10:44.

to buy the house that he built in Charnwood Forest, they plan to open

:10:45.:10:50.

it to the public for the pit has run into local opposition.

:10:51.:10:57.

Entering the hidden world of this house. You get this sense of a very

:10:58.:11:05.

simple but beautiful life. That has great relevance for us today. It is

:11:06.:11:09.

set in rural Leicestershire, down lanes few venture. Not for long if

:11:10.:11:16.

the National Trust get their way. They want to make a car park for 60

:11:17.:11:22.

cars in a medal at the Crossroads was up they want a tearoom cos they

:11:23.:11:33.

want to open the house to visitors. Pod these are the people who will

:11:34.:11:37.

decide if the National Trust get their way. Charnwood's planning

:11:38.:11:47.

committee. It was last winter when the plans were submitted. People

:11:48.:11:51.

living around Ulverscroft Parish were quick to mobilise in this room.

:11:52.:11:57.

Can we concentrate on the highways aspect. They were all against the

:11:58.:12:07.

Trust. They would experience up to 160 visitors a day. Our principal

:12:08.:12:14.

concern is one of highway safety. No one has said they are in support of

:12:15.:12:18.

this. Another Gimson designed house is next door to the Trust's

:12:19.:12:21.

property, but by the road, not hidden down a drive. Its owner fears

:12:22.:12:32.

an invasion of her privacy. You look around the area and it is extremely

:12:33.:12:36.

quiet. Some of the walls between the two properties are now more than

:12:37.:12:44.

three foot high. I am very concerned about the security issues of people

:12:45.:12:52.

wandering off into the gardens. This pumphouse is owned by both

:12:53.:12:57.

properties? It used to supply water to both forms. Those stories are

:12:58.:13:11.

unlocked. It is a listed building. People will walk down here, through

:13:12.:13:14.

the pumphouse and onto your property. And through the door you

:13:15.:13:18.

can see the National Trust's new aquisition. Work has started on

:13:19.:13:25.

restoring the house. It is a work of national importance. It was a

:13:26.:13:31.

movement that came from the UK. The fact that Leicestershire had this

:13:32.:13:38.

rule and it, particularly in the shape of Ernest Gimson, it is

:13:39.:13:56.

tremendously important. And volunteers, the lifeblood of the

:13:57.:13:59.

Trust, are coming in to keep the gardens in good order.

:14:00.:14:11.

You can see from the lanes in the area that they are not designed to

:14:12.:14:20.

take traffic. The National Trust estimate something like 70%

:14:21.:14:24.

escalation in traffic numbers. Clearly, there is not the

:14:25.:14:29.

infrastructure to support that. To avoid traffic parking by the

:14:30.:14:32.

entrance to Stoneywell, just there on the right, the National Trust

:14:33.:14:35.

wants to take people by minubus from the car park it wants to create.

:14:36.:14:40.

Visitors will only be admitted if they book in advance and take the

:14:41.:14:44.

bus from the car park. This is the route from the house to the car

:14:45.:14:50.

park. Locals believe the increase in traffic will be a danger. Especially

:14:51.:14:57.

as there is no speed limit and you only notice the junction ahead when

:14:58.:14:58.

you come over a brow on the hill. There is specific viewing distances

:14:59.:15:13.

required at junctions in conjunction with any development opportunity.

:15:14.:15:19.

This is woefully inadequate. If they refer to it from a legal principle

:15:20.:15:25.

Paul, it doesn't work. It's September. Decision day. The

:15:26.:15:32.

planning committee are visiting sites they will have to form an

:15:33.:15:36.

opinion on. And Stoneywell is by far the most controversial. Planning

:15:37.:15:46.

officers have prepared the paperwork and are recommending approval. But

:15:47.:15:49.

councillors make their own minds up. They see the field which they have

:15:50.:15:55.

the power to turn into a car park. The road curves very slightly over.

:15:56.:16:08.

They look at the crossroads which objectors claim will lead to someone

:16:09.:16:11.

dying here because of increased traffic. At the house itself, a tour

:16:12.:16:16.

of the barn which will be a tea room and then the house itself. There is

:16:17.:16:29.

a driveway that runs around... The National Trust gives us permission

:16:30.:16:33.

to come into the ground with the councillors. Job done. Next stop,

:16:34.:16:46.

the council meeting. And a full public gallery is expected. We hope

:16:47.:16:53.

that common sense will prevail. The council lets cameras in too. That is

:16:54.:17:06.

a dangerous junction. The protesters get their voice heard first. The

:17:07.:17:14.

only organisation to benefit financially is the National Trust.

:17:15.:17:19.

They do not need to behave like a money grabbing large corporation.

:17:20.:17:29.

The acquisition of Stoneywell gives a great opportunity to address the

:17:30.:17:33.

imbalance. If we are able to gain planning approval, we can give

:17:34.:17:38.

sensitive access to Stoneywell and lead to a sustainable financial

:17:39.:17:44.

future. We have modified our proposals to address concerns. We

:17:45.:17:48.

have revised visitor numbers downwards, and designed the car park

:17:49.:17:53.

to be as far away as possible from the nearest resident. We want

:17:54.:17:58.

Stoneywell to be there for future generations. We have to look after.

:17:59.:18:10.

It is what is in the application that is the basis for our decision.

:18:11.:18:17.

Now it is down for the councillors to debate and decide. " our inner

:18:18.:18:23.

field is not protecting the environment. I had not realised how

:18:24.:18:29.

provided an influence he has had on designers. The vote goes 8`5. The

:18:30.:18:39.

National Trust wins the day. But the vanquished have not given up.

:18:40.:18:51.

Ironically, had councillors that were members of the National Trust

:18:52.:18:56.

not been allowed to vote, we would have edged that. They plan to appeal

:18:57.:19:01.

while the National Trust prepares to open what has been a hidden gem.

:19:02.:19:11.

Now, when you think motor racing, you think money, big money, and in

:19:12.:19:15.

the case of Formula One you'd be right.

:19:16.:19:16.

But there is a more affordable, family friendly motorsport which has

:19:17.:19:20.

its roots here in The East Midlands. Stuart Woodman hit the road with

:19:21.:19:23.

some of the fastest young drivers in Britain. Hold onto your hats and ear

:19:24.:19:27.

plugs at the ready, these cars go with a bang!

:19:28.:19:33.

They're mean, they're lean. Some say they are the ultimate driving

:19:34.:19:36.

machine. Junior dragsters are the scaled down version of the top

:19:37.:19:40.

fuelled racing cars. They first appeared on the racing scene 25

:19:41.:19:43.

years ago and now Santa Pod Raceway has become home to this high

:19:44.:19:46.

adrenaline motor sport. We'll be heading there shortly for the

:19:47.:19:49.

European Finals. But before that, let's meet two young drivers. I am a

:19:50.:20:04.

little nervous. How does your cart differ from your sister's? Her car

:20:05.:20:15.

goes not to 60 in under two seconds. Sisters Belle and Paige live in

:20:16.:20:18.

Wellingborough and they're already international drag racers, recently

:20:19.:20:34.

returning from America. We're joining them at Shakespeare County

:20:35.:20:39.

Raceway in the Midlands. This is the first round of the elimination. This

:20:40.:20:45.

is the most difficult one, it always feels harder anyway. How are you

:20:46.:20:53.

feeling? I am feeling quite confident. Hopefully, I will

:20:54.:21:02.

qualify. I will do my best. We are very competitive. We both want to

:21:03.:21:12.

win. I torment her before the race. She is pretty good, yes. But I don't

:21:13.:21:17.

like telling her that. She gets pig`headed. This is a fast moving

:21:18.:21:23.

sport and, to the untrained eye, it may look like first car over the

:21:24.:21:27.

finish line wins, but it's not that simple. What happened? I read of two

:21:28.:21:39.

early and he came up my blind spot and overtook me. During a race, a

:21:40.:21:48.

staggered start allows different sized cars to compete. Each team

:21:49.:21:52.

also chooses a dial in, which is a predicted finish time. They have to

:21:53.:21:56.

get as close as possible to this finish time, but not to go under it.

:21:57.:22:01.

Starting on a red light is also not allowed. Sisters Paige and Belle

:22:02.:22:04.

occasionally race against each other. But their main rival is Joe

:22:05.:22:08.

Kellet. A talented drummer and one of Europe's hottest young drivers.

:22:09.:22:17.

It just comes naturally. My drums help a lot. I can get off the start

:22:18.:22:22.

line in rhythm and time it perfectly. It seems to me that Joe

:22:23.:22:31.

does the glamorous stuff, and you do the hard work. Yes! That was a good

:22:32.:22:48.

result for him? Definitely. Does the drumming help? Yes, and he was

:22:49.:22:55.

drumming last night with the band. Every driver's dream is to get into

:22:56.:22:59.

the big league, and cars don't come bigger than this. They're called Top

:23:00.:23:08.

Fuel. These cars have top speeds of over 300 miles per hour. They

:23:09.:23:14.

accelerate zero to 100 in under a second and burn 15 gallons of fuel

:23:15.:23:18.

in one race which lasts under five seconds. Laura Turboville from

:23:19.:23:24.

Nottingham has just made the move up from Junior Dragsters. This year,

:23:25.:23:27.

she's racing a league below Top Fuel in Super Pro ET. It's a family team

:23:28.:23:32.

and her dad is her coach and chief mechanic. Ditching do some good

:23:33.:23:41.

there? That was my fault because I got her off to one side a little bit

:23:42.:23:46.

and she lost traction. But she handled it great as usual. The run

:23:47.:23:53.

may only be eight seconds long, it is the build`up to that run, riding

:23:54.:23:58.

up with the other racers, turning round into a crowd of around 30,000

:23:59.:24:08.

people. Sometimes, I am shipping with `` I am shaking with

:24:09.:24:14.

adrenaline. Joe Kellet has had a good year so far, winning races in

:24:15.:24:18.

Germany and coming top of his class in smaller events in the Midlands.

:24:19.:24:22.

But the big challenge remains for all our young drivers. The European

:24:23.:24:30.

finals in Northamptonshire. It is the best event of the whole lot.

:24:31.:24:38.

Just the best. The cars and the noise. And everything. Just the

:24:39.:24:47.

ultimate motor sport, really. I love it, absolutely love it. Santa Pod

:24:48.:24:52.

has earned the reputation as the home of European drag racing. First

:24:53.:25:01.

up, it's Laura from Nottingham. We are going out for our first

:25:02.:25:05.

elimination run. You either win or you lose, no second place. It is a

:25:06.:25:13.

lot of pressure, but a lot of fun. You are Laura's competitor this

:25:14.:25:16.

morning, what is going through your head? A lot of adrenaline flowing. I

:25:17.:25:25.

am new to the sport, so it's a big step up. May the best man or woman

:25:26.:25:40.

when `` when. ``win. It's a bad start. Laura has come in under her

:25:41.:25:44.

dial in time, which isn't allowed. She's raced quicker than her team

:25:45.:25:50.

anticipated so she's out. Belle is also unlucky. She's had some great

:25:51.:25:54.

races but she's been knocked out by an older driver. Well, I lost. I was

:25:55.:26:02.

really disappointed. I thought I was going to beat him. But it can change

:26:03.:26:11.

in a matter of seconds. Not very good. Things are looking hopeful for

:26:12.:26:16.

Paige and Joe and they're now racing each other in a head`to`head

:26:17.:26:23.

semifinal. I have got Joe next. Very excited. What will be will be. It

:26:24.:26:30.

will be an interesting race, a tough one and whoever wins will go to the

:26:31.:26:38.

final. A lot of people do not believe that I am driving. They want

:26:39.:26:45.

proof of it. Is it safe? Absolutely. I have no fear of Joe getting in the

:26:46.:26:52.

car. They are fast cars, but it is a very safe sport. The crew are

:26:53.:26:59.

fabulous. Joe makes it to the final, but then a fatal error ` he starts

:27:00.:27:03.
