Hello. | 0:00:06 | 0:00:06
How safe is your credit card? | 0:00:06 | 0:00:08
Tonight we are on the trail of the fraudsters out to get | 0:00:08 | 0:00:11
their hands on your cash. | 0:00:11 | 0:00:13
I'd like to ask you a couple of questions actually about your | 0:00:13 | 0:00:15
involvement in a chip and pin fraud. | 0:00:15 | 0:00:17
We track down the man who wants to clone your card. | 0:00:17 | 0:00:20
Are you making a lot of money out of it? | 0:00:20 | 0:00:26
I actually feel sick right now. | 0:00:26 | 0:00:27
Sally's sugar rush but can she quit the white stuff? | 0:00:27 | 0:00:30
People are losing limbs through diabetes. | 0:00:30 | 0:00:33
And Des Coleman sets the bush craft world on fire. | 0:00:33 | 0:00:38
Ow! | 0:00:38 | 0:00:40 | |
The stories that matter closer to home. | 0:00:40 | 0:00:44
This is Inside Out East Midlands. | 0:00:44 | 0:00:46
First tonight, credit card fraud. | 0:00:58 | 0:00:59
When chip and pin machines replaced our signature in shops, we were | 0:00:59 | 0:01:02
promised they would help to protect us but an Inside Out investigation | 0:01:02 | 0:01:06
has discovered that criminal gangs are using specially`adapted machines | 0:01:06 | 0:01:09
to steal our bank details and then our cash. | 0:01:09 | 0:01:14
For the last nine months, we've been working undercover to gain access to | 0:01:14 | 0:01:18
a fraudster with global connections. | 0:01:18 | 0:01:21
And tonight, in Jonathan Gibson's exclusive report, we confront him. | 0:01:21 | 0:01:24
It's Friday night and for most of us the weekend has started. | 0:01:28 | 0:01:32
Me included. | 0:01:32 | 0:01:35
A few drinks and some food out. | 0:01:36 | 0:01:38
And, if like me you've never got cash, a card comes in handy. | 0:01:38 | 0:01:44
For ten years now, we've all been using these. | 0:01:47 | 0:01:48
Chip and pin machines. | 0:01:48 | 0:01:52
And the place I've come for dinner is no different. | 0:01:52 | 0:01:58
Remember when we used to sign for things in shops? | 0:01:58 | 0:02:00
The banks told us chip and pin would be much safer. | 0:02:00 | 0:02:07
Well, try telling Leila from Nottingham that. | 0:02:07 | 0:02:09
She found out her card had been cloned when she was made to leave | 0:02:09 | 0:02:12
her shopping at the checkout. | 0:02:12 | 0:02:14
I just thought I have got money in there and I just didn't know why | 0:02:14 | 0:02:17
it was being declined. | 0:02:18 | 0:02:23
I couldn't understand it. | 0:02:23 | 0:02:24
My card was obviously cloned. | 0:02:24 | 0:02:26
Really horrible, the thought that somebody else can access your money | 0:02:26 | 0:02:34
through your chip and pin card. | 0:02:35 | 0:02:35
The bank gave Leila her money back. | 0:02:35 | 0:02:37
But a quick look online shows there are many more victims. | 0:02:37 | 0:02:43
That's the thing with the Internet, there are the good people | 0:02:43 | 0:02:45
on there like innocent victims and then there are the bad. | 0:02:45 | 0:02:50
I'm talking to a man who knows all about stolen numbers. | 0:02:50 | 0:02:53
Because he steals them and he's looking for a new partner. | 0:02:53 | 0:02:58
Why not? | 0:02:58 | 0:03:01
Funnily enough, I haven't mentioned I'm a journalist. | 0:03:01 | 0:03:05
He thinks I own a restaurant with card`paying | 0:03:05 | 0:03:06
customers but I need to gain his trust and that's taking months. | 0:03:06 | 0:03:12
But one day he tells me of parcels in the post. | 0:03:12 | 0:03:16
It's a chip and pin machine. | 0:03:18 | 0:03:21
I've already spent months gaining this criminal's confidence but he | 0:03:22 | 0:03:25
still doesn't trust me completely. | 0:03:25 | 0:03:28
He's finally agreed to chat but is banking on staying anonymous | 0:03:28 | 0:03:31
over the Internet. | 0:03:31 | 0:03:34
We will see about that. | 0:03:34 | 0:03:41
COMPUTER VOICE: | 0:03:41 | 0:03:43
Press F1 then one. | 0:03:43 | 0:03:44
He tells me the machine he sent me remembers people's card numbers. | 0:03:44 | 0:03:47
Once you swipe it, the data has already been saved | 0:03:47 | 0:03:49
from the first swipe. | 0:03:49 | 0:03:50
Then enter the pin, the pin is stored | 0:03:50 | 0:03:54
and now all the data is there. | 0:03:54 | 0:03:55
That's everything he needs to steal people's cash. | 0:03:55 | 0:03:57
Do it how the restaurant's receipt looks cos it's fully customisable. | 0:03:57 | 0:03:59
He's told me to put this error message on the bottom | 0:03:59 | 0:04:02
of the receipt so my customers will think the machine is not working. | 0:04:02 | 0:04:06
That is so I can swap it for my normal one to take | 0:04:06 | 0:04:10
their real payment. | 0:04:10 | 0:04:13
What I now need to work out is a way of putting that to the test. | 0:04:13 | 0:04:17
And I think I've found the answer. | 0:04:17 | 0:04:20
Pay`as`you`go debit cards. | 0:04:20 | 0:04:22
They are a bit like mobile phone top`ups. | 0:04:22 | 0:04:26
You can only spend what you put on them. | 0:04:26 | 0:04:28
I have bought 20 to try out. | 0:04:28 | 0:04:31
I need him to think they belong to my customers but will it work? | 0:04:31 | 0:04:36
He has told me I will need to download the data using some | 0:04:36 | 0:04:43
cables he sent me in the post. | 0:04:43 | 0:04:44
Can you just plug that into your laptop? | 0:04:44 | 0:04:44
A couple more connections and we are ready to rock. | 0:04:44 | 0:04:47
Is it downloading? | 0:04:47 | 0:04:48
Yes, it's receiving stuff. | 0:04:48 | 0:04:50
Yeah, OK, when it's done downloading, just send me that file. | 0:04:50 | 0:04:54
That's how you download. | 0:04:54 | 0:04:55
Look at this, he just e`mailed me through | 0:04:55 | 0:04:57
the rest of the card numbers. | 0:04:57 | 0:05:02
And the pins that go with them. | 0:05:02 | 0:05:04
These cards here. | 0:05:04 | 0:05:06
In a couple of minutes, he's got everything he needs to make exact | 0:05:06 | 0:05:10
copies of all these cards, which he can then use in cashpoints. | 0:05:10 | 0:05:16
And he says he's done that already time and time again. | 0:05:16 | 0:05:22
What will the banks think? | 0:05:22 | 0:05:25
I think the encouraging thing is that these frauds are very rare. | 0:05:25 | 0:05:28
We've only seen one recent instance of it and we are seeing convictions | 0:05:28 | 0:05:31
in the Old Bailey in respect of that at the moment. | 0:05:31 | 0:05:34
We know the existing advice to consumers is to protect your pin. | 0:05:34 | 0:05:38
With something like that there's no point because it's the device | 0:05:38 | 0:05:41
itself which takes the pin number. | 0:05:41 | 0:05:45
The first reassurance to give everybody when it comes to this type | 0:05:45 | 0:05:47
of fraud, which is a very rare type of crime, is that even if you are | 0:05:47 | 0:05:52
the victim of it, you will receive a full refund of all of your losses, | 0:05:52 | 0:05:56
but with this type of fraud, in common with other ones as well, | 0:05:56 | 0:06:00
we always advise consumers to check their statements. | 0:06:00 | 0:06:05
I'm about to do just that. | 0:06:05 | 0:06:07
As all the pay`as`you`go debit cards are in my name it also means I can | 0:06:07 | 0:06:10
check what's happening to them. | 0:06:10 | 0:06:12
Take these two for example. | 0:06:12 | 0:06:13
They've never left my wallet but according to | 0:06:13 | 0:06:15
the transaction history they've been emptied of cash in the Philippines. | 0:06:15 | 0:06:22
So either he's stealing my money or someone he knows is. | 0:06:22 | 0:06:26
But he has also sent me a second machine so | 0:06:26 | 0:06:29
at least he's not suspicious. | 0:06:29 | 0:06:30
But who is he? | 0:06:30 | 0:06:33
He is taking cash out in the Philippines | 0:06:33 | 0:06:34
but the machines came from Britain. | 0:06:34 | 0:06:36
I've also sent money to Canada for the cables he is posted. | 0:06:36 | 0:06:41
I'm not sure that's really helped. | 0:06:41 | 0:06:42
He could be on either side of the world. | 0:06:42 | 0:06:46
OK, time to change tactics. | 0:06:46 | 0:06:47
How about I tell him I've broken the machine. | 0:06:47 | 0:06:52
I'm hoping he will ask me to send it for repair. | 0:06:52 | 0:06:55
And if he trusts me enough, he might meet give me an address. | 0:06:55 | 0:06:59
It might not be his, of course. | 0:06:59 | 0:07:01
Bingo. | 0:07:01 | 0:07:02
He's taken the bait, telling me to send it to | 0:07:02 | 0:07:05
Marcus Montague in Canada. | 0:07:05 | 0:07:06
He's the guy I paid for the cables but this is one | 0:07:06 | 0:07:10
parcel I plan to deliver by hand. | 0:07:10 | 0:07:13
Bags packed, passports checked. | 0:07:14 | 0:07:16
Let's go find him. | 0:07:16 | 0:07:20
Toronto, Canada. | 0:07:27 | 0:07:28
I'm heading out of town 25 miles along the freeway to Pickering. | 0:07:28 | 0:07:33
Is the guy that we've been given the address for the guy that's been | 0:07:35 | 0:07:38
on Skype that we've been talking to for months now? | 0:07:38 | 0:07:43
But there's only one way to be sure and that means me playing postie. | 0:07:43 | 0:07:50
Yes, we're happy to help at TRN Couriers. | 0:07:50 | 0:07:51
OK, so the accent needs work but I'm hoping uniform will shine. | 0:07:51 | 0:07:55
We put a tracker inside the machine and I'm wearing a secret camera. | 0:07:55 | 0:08:00
Right, mate. | 0:08:03 | 0:08:10
Yes, it's Marcus Montague and he signed | 0:08:15 | 0:08:18
our fake delivery note to prove it. | 0:08:19 | 0:08:20
So it's time to confront him. | 0:08:20 | 0:08:23
Don't hit him. | 0:08:27 | 0:08:30
Courier delivery. | 0:08:37 | 0:08:43
Stay back. | 0:08:43 | 0:08:43
Montague, I got a delivery for you, mate. | 0:08:43 | 0:08:45
Delivery for you. | 0:08:45 | 0:08:46
No, I can't accept if I don't know about it. | 0:08:46 | 0:08:49
OK. | 0:08:49 | 0:08:50 | |
It's time to come clean. | 0:08:50 | 0:08:51
Actually, I'm from the BBC. | 0:08:51 | 0:08:52
BBC television in the UK. | 0:08:52 | 0:08:54
I'd like to ask you a couple of questions about your involvement | 0:08:54 | 0:08:58
in a chip and pin fraud. | 0:08:58 | 0:08:59
Chip and pin fraud. | 0:08:59 | 0:09:00
Do you know about it? | 0:09:00 | 0:09:04
No. | 0:09:04 | 0:09:04 | |
I think you do. | 0:09:04 | 0:09:05
We have been sending deliveries to your address | 0:09:05 | 0:09:07
and you have been taking them. | 0:09:07 | 0:09:08
No, I haven't. | 0:09:08 | 0:09:10
Don't go away, mate. | 0:09:10 | 0:09:10
We're asking you a few questions. | 0:09:10 | 0:09:17
Don't run us over. | 0:09:17 | 0:09:19
I don't know what's going on here. | 0:09:19 | 0:09:20
What's your involvement with chip and pin fraud? | 0:09:20 | 0:09:23
Who are you actually involved with then? | 0:09:23 | 0:09:25
Tell me. | 0:09:25 | 0:09:26
Who are you actually working with? | 0:09:26 | 0:09:28
Are you making a lot of money out of it? | 0:09:28 | 0:09:31
Well, not many answers. | 0:09:34 | 0:09:39
Raised a few more questions perhaps. | 0:09:39 | 0:09:43
Whatever the case, he wasn't very keen to hang around, was he? | 0:09:43 | 0:09:48
I think that's probably the last we'll see of him. | 0:09:49 | 0:09:52
At least for now. | 0:09:52 | 0:09:53
Can I have couple of pounds of plums and some apples as well. | 0:09:55 | 0:09:59
Back home and still on the market for answers but | 0:09:59 | 0:10:03
VeriFone which makes the machines doesn't want to be interviewed. | 0:10:03 | 0:10:08
I wanted to show them our evidence. | 0:10:08 | 0:10:10
It decided on a statement. | 0:10:10 | 0:10:12
VeriFone says the fraud is not a result of tampering with VeriFone | 0:10:12 | 0:10:15
devices. | 0:10:15 | 0:10:17
And requires the collusion of two criminals. | 0:10:17 | 0:10:19
The company says it takes the security | 0:10:19 | 0:10:21
of consumer data very seriously. | 0:10:21 | 0:10:23
It works with authorities to uncover fraud | 0:10:23 | 0:10:25
and its machines are not to blame. | 0:10:25 | 0:10:28
Put your pin in, please, mate. | 0:10:28 | 0:10:32
You know what, mate, I think I'll leave it. | 0:10:32 | 0:10:37
Now, it's been called the new tobacco, even a poison. | 0:10:41 | 0:10:44
It's this stuff, sugar. | 0:10:44 | 0:10:45
And we're eating far too much of it. | 0:10:45 | 0:10:47
In fact, some experts say we're already paying with our health. | 0:10:47 | 0:10:51
So how hard it could be to live on a virtually sugarfree diet from month? | 0:10:51 | 0:10:58
BBC Derby's Sally Pepper thinks she's pretty healthy. | 0:10:58 | 0:10:59
Could she do it? | 0:10:59 | 0:11:03
# sweets for my sweet, sugar for my honey, | 0:11:03 | 0:11:06
# your sugar kiss thrills me so. | 0:11:06 | 0:11:09
ANNOUNCER: | 0:11:09 | 0:11:15
Sally Pepper on BBC Radio Derby. | 0:11:15 | 0:11:17
Good morning. | 0:11:17 | 0:11:18
It's Monday morning. | 0:11:18 | 0:11:20
I've had a fabulous weekend which has consisted mainly | 0:11:20 | 0:11:21
of stuffing my face with some delicious foodie treats. | 0:11:21 | 0:11:24
Because of midday today, I'm going virtually sugar`free | 0:11:24 | 0:11:26
for the next four weeks. | 0:11:26 | 0:11:30
I know, why did I sign up for that? | 0:11:30 | 0:11:32
Well, because before too long, we could all face a sugar challenge. | 0:11:35 | 0:11:41
With worries that too much sugar is fuelling obesity, | 0:11:41 | 0:11:42
heart problems and diabetes, the Government is considering slashing | 0:11:42 | 0:11:45
the recommended daily intake of sugar from 12 teaspoons to six. | 0:11:45 | 0:11:52
The office seems divided on my chances of meeting this challenge. | 0:11:53 | 0:12:03
Sally can not bear to lose. | 0:12:03 | 0:12:04
She can't lose an argument with me, she can't lose a challenge | 0:12:04 | 0:12:08
from the team. | 0:12:08 | 0:12:09
Good luck. | 0:12:09 | 0:12:11
Seriously. | 0:12:11 | 0:12:11
Are you going to join me? | 0:12:11 | 0:12:12
No. | 0:12:12 | 0:12:16 | |
Not only is the office going to be watching me, but doctors | 0:12:16 | 0:12:18
at the Royal Derby Hospital will be monitoring my progress too. | 0:12:18 | 0:12:22
Here they know all about the problems of excess sugar. | 0:12:22 | 0:12:27
Recent evidence has suggested that the increased intake | 0:12:27 | 0:12:30
of refined sugar is responsible for the increased prevalence of diabetes | 0:12:30 | 0:12:35
and diabetes is a major killer. | 0:12:35 | 0:12:38
After a few tests, I'm given the all clear to start the diet. | 0:12:38 | 0:12:43
Was that painful? | 0:12:43 | 0:12:44
A little sharp. | 0:12:44 | 0:12:45
It's all right. | 0:12:45 | 0:12:46
I'm not looking, though. | 0:12:46 | 0:12:48
Just over 40 minutes to go. | 0:12:51 | 0:12:53
Time for some last`minute indulgence. | 0:12:53 | 0:12:56
Here at Radio Derby we have something called the table of love. | 0:12:56 | 0:13:00
A desk crammed with sugary treats. | 0:13:00 | 0:13:02
Today, they have gone overboard. | 0:13:02 | 0:13:05
There's loads on here. | 0:13:05 | 0:13:06
Look at this. | 0:13:06 | 0:13:09
I feel sick. | 0:13:09 | 0:13:12
I actually feel sick right now. | 0:13:12 | 0:13:16
I said it started at midday and that's it. | 0:13:16 | 0:13:17
Here we are, 12:03. | 0:13:17 | 0:13:19
For the next four weeks, I have very little sugar I can consume each day. | 0:13:19 | 0:13:26
# Sugar in the morning, sugar in the evening, sugar at supper time #. | 0:13:26 | 0:13:30
After just a few days on the diet, I've already discovered two rascals | 0:13:30 | 0:13:34
within my own family who seem determined to scupper my chances. | 0:13:34 | 0:13:41
Look how difficult this is going to be. | 0:13:41 | 0:13:42
I've got these two boys who will be stuffing their faces with sweets, | 0:13:42 | 0:13:45
cakes and chocolates and biscuits and ice cream and mummy is not | 0:13:45 | 0:13:49
allowed anything for four weeks? | 0:13:49 | 0:13:52
You can have this. | 0:13:52 | 0:13:55
Day five. | 0:13:57 | 0:13:58
I'm getting grumpy. | 0:13:58 | 0:13:59
I'm fed up of thinking about what I can and can't eat. | 0:13:59 | 0:14:04
It's the hidden sugars in packets, sauces, ready meals and drinks that | 0:14:09 | 0:14:13
could really trip me up. | 0:14:13 | 0:14:15
Look at this cola. | 0:14:15 | 0:14:16
A 750 mil cola. | 0:14:16 | 0:14:21
You're talking 13 teaspoons of sugar. | 0:14:21 | 0:14:23
When you look at your 25 grams you are supposed to | 0:14:23 | 0:14:25
have, that's over half the amount of sugar n the glass. | 0:14:25 | 0:14:29
I think we'll get rid of that. | 0:14:29 | 0:14:34
Switch to water but avoid that flavoured stuff. | 0:14:34 | 0:14:36
They look so innocent, just touch of lime, and yet lurking in that | 0:14:36 | 0:14:39
one bottle is ten teaspoons of sugar and yet making a simple swap to | 0:14:39 | 0:14:44
just water from the tap, adding your own juice of lemon and lime, you get | 0:14:44 | 0:14:50
a nice extra zing but no sugar. | 0:14:50 | 0:14:52
The food and drink industry say they are listening. | 0:15:02 | 0:15:03
The sugar that is present in products is there for a reason. | 0:15:03 | 0:15:06
And where it is possible to reduce sugar with a calorie reduction as | 0:15:06 | 0:15:14
part of the process, companies have already taken these steps and will | 0:15:14 | 0:15:15
continue to go down this route. | 0:15:15 | 0:15:21
The industry absolutely on the back foot about sugar. | 0:15:21 | 0:15:23
Sugar, the science is solid. | 0:15:24 | 0:15:24
Public opinion is solid. | 0:15:24 | 0:15:27
Sugar alone contributes 10 or even 20% of calories that | 0:15:27 | 0:15:31
people consume in a day. | 0:15:31 | 0:15:33
And to halve that amount would actually reverse | 0:15:33 | 0:15:35
the obesity epidemic. | 0:15:35 | 0:15:41
Well, mostly I'm doing well but everyone has bad days | 0:15:44 | 0:15:48
and word seems to have got around. | 0:15:48 | 0:15:51
There is this very vicious rumour that a pizza might have | 0:15:51 | 0:15:55
been illegally consumed. | 0:15:55 | 0:15:56
I can't resist. | 0:15:56 | 0:15:59
I've done a run, I've earned it. | 0:15:59 | 0:16:01
I'm going to eat it and I don't care how much sugar is in there. | 0:16:01 | 0:16:06
There is four teaspoons of sugar in a pizza. | 0:16:06 | 0:16:09
Oops! | 0:16:09 | 0:16:12 | |
Halfway through the challenge and it's back to the hospital. | 0:16:12 | 0:16:14
I've got a few questions for the doctors. | 0:16:14 | 0:16:17
I'm getting real need and pangs for chocolate that actually I | 0:16:17 | 0:16:21
wasn't getting before. | 0:16:21 | 0:16:22
Is that normal? | 0:16:22 | 0:16:25
It's sugar craving. | 0:16:25 | 0:16:27
That's well`recognised when people stop eating sugar for a bit. | 0:16:27 | 0:16:29
But hopefully, that will resolve. | 0:16:29 | 0:16:32
I'm doing this for four weeks as my challenge, but there is a serious | 0:16:32 | 0:16:36
message behind this, isn't there? | 0:16:36 | 0:16:38
That's right. | 0:16:38 | 0:16:39
Diabetes is on the rise. | 0:16:39 | 0:16:41
For these diabetic patients, all on strict diets, I discovered | 0:16:41 | 0:16:44
there's a lot at stake. | 0:16:44 | 0:16:47
Your sight could go. | 0:16:47 | 0:16:50
You could lose your feet, your legs. | 0:16:50 | 0:16:53
Everything. | 0:16:53 | 0:16:55
People are losing limbs through diabetes and again, | 0:16:55 | 0:16:57
that's the fear that you have. | 0:16:58 | 0:16:58
So cake is your nemesis? | 0:16:58 | 0:17:02
I love cake. | 0:17:02 | 0:17:03
Which would have lots of sugar in it. | 0:17:03 | 0:17:06
Which has a lot of sugar in. | 0:17:06 | 0:17:07
Yes, the dried fruit. | 0:17:07 | 0:17:12
I only have a little slice at weekends. | 0:17:12 | 0:17:12
Back home, I'm getting pretty good at ditching all those takeaways | 0:17:15 | 0:17:19
and packet meals. | 0:17:19 | 0:17:21
And there we have it. | 0:17:21 | 0:17:24
Seared salmon on a bed of sweet potato mash. | 0:17:24 | 0:17:25
And home`made ratatouille. | 0:17:25 | 0:17:28
It took just 20 minutes and if we just try it... | 0:17:28 | 0:17:33
Pretty delicious even if I do say so myself. | 0:17:37 | 0:17:42
And virtually sugar`free. | 0:17:42 | 0:17:44
I am so excited. | 0:17:44 | 0:17:47
This is my final evening. | 0:17:47 | 0:17:49
Tomorrow the sugar challenge ends. | 0:17:49 | 0:17:57
Honestly, my stomach is rumbling in anticipation. | 0:17:57 | 0:18:00
I think it was harder for us than it was for Sally to be honest. | 0:18:00 | 0:18:04
She's a little bit tetchy a couple of times to the point that | 0:18:04 | 0:18:07
I was trying to feed her sugar. | 0:18:07 | 0:18:11
Yay! | 0:18:12 | 0:18:15 | |
It's midday! | 0:18:15 | 0:18:17
I'm done. | 0:18:17 | 0:18:20
Bring the chocolate in. | 0:18:20 | 0:18:21
No, I'm not sharing. | 0:18:21 | 0:18:22
They are all for me. | 0:18:22 | 0:18:26
So good. | 0:18:26 | 0:18:30
I thought I was going to need one of these the other day | 0:18:30 | 0:18:35
after bingeing once the sugar`free diet had finished, | 0:18:35 | 0:18:36
I didn't sleep well that night. | 0:18:36 | 0:18:37
I had a terrible headache. | 0:18:37 | 0:18:39
I feel much better now and I'm here to get the final results. | 0:18:39 | 0:18:47
And they are pretty amazing. | 0:18:47 | 0:18:48
Overall, the cholesterol profile has improved over the past four weeks. | 0:18:48 | 0:18:51
Are you surprised by these changes in such a short amount of time? | 0:18:51 | 0:18:54
I was a bit surprised because four weeks is | 0:18:54 | 0:18:57
a short time and you generally lead a healthy life as well. | 0:18:57 | 0:18:59
But that's good. | 0:18:59 | 0:19:02
# Sugar mama, sugar mama, sugar mamma, please come back to me #. | 0:19:02 | 0:19:09
So if I was to continue this challenge, in 12 months I would have | 0:19:09 | 0:19:13
cut out the equivalent of this amount of sugar. | 0:19:13 | 0:19:15
Quite staggering really. | 0:19:15 | 0:19:17
I do feel really quite healthy so I'm quite tempted to carry on. | 0:19:17 | 0:19:22
Mind you, one cake wouldn't hurt, would it? | 0:19:22 | 0:19:25
Oh my God, that's so big. | 0:19:34 | 0:19:37
Looks like Sally's got her taste back for sugar quite nicely there. | 0:19:42 | 0:19:46
Finally tonight, living off the land, sleeping under | 0:19:46 | 0:19:47
the stars, cooking on an open fire. | 0:19:48 | 0:19:52
Perhaps doesn't sound like everyone's idea | 0:19:52 | 0:19:53
of weekend fun but apparently wilderness training is all | 0:19:53 | 0:19:56
the rage here in the East Midlands. | 0:19:56 | 0:19:59
So how will city slicker Des Coleman cope without his home comforts? | 0:19:59 | 0:20:04
I've been told that this weekend is all about experiencing | 0:20:06 | 0:20:08
the great outdoors so, like a boy scout, I'm going to be prepared so | 0:20:08 | 0:20:11
I've come here to get kitted out and I ain't leaving anything to chance. | 0:20:11 | 0:20:18
This place in Nottingham is packed full of surplus army supplies | 0:20:18 | 0:20:22
so it should have everything I need for a weekend in the wild. | 0:20:22 | 0:20:26
What is a good thing to protect me from all of the bad weather and | 0:20:26 | 0:20:29
all the bugs because I hate bugs? | 0:20:29 | 0:20:33
OK, I can get you something like a mosquito net that will go over your | 0:20:33 | 0:20:35
hat and it will tuck into your neck and that will keep the bugs off you. | 0:20:35 | 0:20:39
It won't look great, but you're not going to get bit. | 0:20:39 | 0:20:47
Not sure if I'm going to need this. | 0:20:47 | 0:20:50
I think it's more bank robber than bush craft. | 0:20:50 | 0:20:52
You're probably right there. | 0:20:52 | 0:20:55
How's that? | 0:20:55 | 0:20:57
Yeah, that's looking good. | 0:20:57 | 0:20:58
Yeah? | 0:20:58 | 0:21:04 | |
Looking the part proper now. | 0:21:04 | 0:21:06
Des is going to do really well. | 0:21:06 | 0:21:08
We've kitted him out with everything he needs. | 0:21:08 | 0:21:09
For the finishing touches, we've got some matches, a compass, | 0:21:09 | 0:21:12
a hand warmer, a rain poncho. | 0:21:12 | 0:21:14
If all else fails, we've even got him a survival blanket. | 0:21:14 | 0:21:17
A little later, I'm visiting the UK's Bush Craft Show which is | 0:21:17 | 0:21:19
on every year in Derbyshire. | 0:21:20 | 0:21:22
But first, I'm heading to the Vale of Belvoir in Leicestershire. | 0:21:22 | 0:21:26
I'm joining a group of southern city slickers who are paying good | 0:21:26 | 0:21:30
money to rough it in the wild. | 0:21:30 | 0:21:33
I'm meeting bush craft instructor Jason. | 0:21:33 | 0:21:36
Jason, how are you doing? | 0:21:36 | 0:21:38
Hello, Des, I didn't see coming with all the camouflage on there. | 0:21:38 | 0:21:41
I feel a bit overdressed. | 0:21:41 | 0:21:43
Welcome to the Belvoir Castle estate. | 0:21:43 | 0:21:46
As you can see, we've already started. | 0:21:46 | 0:21:48
We are shelter building this morning. | 0:21:48 | 0:21:51
First priority for your survival, so I think we'd best crack on. | 0:21:51 | 0:21:54
Sure. | 0:21:54 | 0:21:57 | |
So Jason, what I want to know is, what is bush craft? | 0:21:57 | 0:22:02
Yeah, big question. | 0:22:02 | 0:22:03
For me, it's about making yourself comfortable | 0:22:03 | 0:22:07
in the great outdoors but doing it in a sustainable manner, | 0:22:07 | 0:22:08
so that the resources are there for the future generations as well. | 0:22:08 | 0:22:13
So what type of people want to take up bush craft courses? | 0:22:13 | 0:22:15
We get all sorts. | 0:22:16 | 0:22:18
We do school groups and we do stag dos and hen dos etc, | 0:22:18 | 0:22:21
but the main thrust of the business is adults, individuals booking on. | 0:22:21 | 0:22:26
People coming from the cities, maybe wanting to re`engage with | 0:22:26 | 0:22:28
the natural world and reconnect. | 0:22:28 | 0:22:31
I think the next thing you'll be telling me, Jason, | 0:22:31 | 0:22:36
is you're going to want me to... | 0:22:36 | 0:22:36
Hold on, it's not working... | 0:22:36 | 0:22:38
Make some fire. | 0:22:38 | 0:22:42
I wouldn't normally do this with ordinary clients, but Des is | 0:22:45 | 0:22:47
a bit of a special one for us. | 0:22:47 | 0:22:51
I'm going to go through his rucksack and make sure he's | 0:22:51 | 0:22:55
getting a complete authentic bush craft experience. | 0:22:55 | 0:22:59
Oh dear. | 0:22:59 | 0:23:01
I think we can find a natural alternative for that one, I think. | 0:23:01 | 0:23:05
Donation to the instructors' camp, I think. | 0:23:05 | 0:23:06
Wonderful, thank you very much, Des. | 0:23:06 | 0:23:10
He has stashed so much food in here. | 0:23:10 | 0:23:13
Did he think that I wasn't going to feed him? | 0:23:13 | 0:23:15
Well, it's pretty obvious he hasn't done | 0:23:15 | 0:23:17
that much manual labour in the past but leave him with me for a couple | 0:23:17 | 0:23:22
of hours and we will sort out. | 0:23:22 | 0:23:23
Besides shelter building, woodland cooking is a big part | 0:23:23 | 0:23:26
of the weekend. | 0:23:26 | 0:23:28
I don't cook at all. | 0:23:28 | 0:23:30
I'm not cooking your lunch. | 0:23:30 | 0:23:31
No? | 0:23:31 | 0:23:33 | |
It's over to you. | 0:23:33 | 0:23:38
It doesn't matter if you do leave the kidney in. | 0:23:38 | 0:23:45
Cut gently through the skin, be careful where | 0:23:45 | 0:23:45
your thumb is close to the blade. | 0:23:45 | 0:23:46
Bush craft has really taken off in the East Midlands and now there's | 0:23:46 | 0:23:48
a fair few companies offering a taste of our great outdoors. | 0:23:48 | 0:23:50
And one of the real draws is spending a night under the stars. | 0:23:50 | 0:23:54
Our shelter is very nearly ready. | 0:23:54 | 0:23:58
I can see a lot of daylight at the moment. | 0:23:58 | 0:24:01
When it's completed, though, how waterproof is it? | 0:24:01 | 0:24:03
Depends on the thatching material but if you go about an arm's depth, | 0:24:03 | 0:24:08
you will be totally waterproof. | 0:24:08 | 0:24:09
Definitely everyone sleeps better on the second night in one | 0:24:09 | 0:24:12
of these natural shelters. | 0:24:12 | 0:24:14
Jonathan, what brings you down? | 0:24:14 | 0:24:15
Basically, I work in an office for my sins. | 0:24:15 | 0:24:19
Every now and again you have to come back outside, | 0:24:19 | 0:24:21
reconnect with the outdoors. | 0:24:21 | 0:24:22
I'm an outdoors person. | 0:24:22 | 0:24:25
I sit at a desk all day. | 0:24:25 | 0:24:27
I try to cycle to work but it's not quite enough | 0:24:27 | 0:24:29
of the outdoors time so every now and again you have to come and build | 0:24:29 | 0:24:37
a few shelters, listen to the birds, see what animals you find. | 0:24:37 | 0:24:38
Just have a bit of me time. | 0:24:38 | 0:24:42
I've left camp for a little bit and come over to rainy Derbyshire. | 0:24:42 | 0:24:45
I'm at the UK's Bush Craft Show at Catton Hall. | 0:24:45 | 0:24:48
This type of tourism has become big business across the East Midlands, | 0:24:48 | 0:24:51
so if you're thinking of booking a wild weekend or simply | 0:24:51 | 0:24:55
enjoying one of the many woodland workshops, this is the place to be. | 0:24:55 | 0:25:01
Guys, I can tell by your accents you're not from around these parts. | 0:25:02 | 0:25:06
That's right, we're from Belfast. | 0:25:06 | 0:25:07
Have you come all the way from there just for this event? | 0:25:07 | 0:25:09
That's right, we travelled through the night, lots of train delays | 0:25:09 | 0:25:12
and everything but we made it here. | 0:25:12 | 0:25:15
11 o'clock. | 0:25:15 | 0:25:17
Does it surprise you that there are so many people | 0:25:17 | 0:25:21
that love doing bush craft? | 0:25:21 | 0:25:22
I think everyone, you know, from when you are a child, being in the | 0:25:22 | 0:25:26
woods, getting sticks and that kind of tying things together building | 0:25:26 | 0:25:32
a den from whatever you can find, I think it's an exciting things. | 0:25:32 | 0:25:36
I don't think you ever lose that really as you get older. | 0:25:36 | 0:25:42
Bush craft is all about living in harmony with nature. | 0:25:42 | 0:25:43
It's not who's got the biggest knife and jumping | 0:25:43 | 0:25:45
off mountains and the rest of it. | 0:25:45 | 0:25:48
It's learning to live with your environment. | 0:25:48 | 0:25:51
Back at camp, I'm about to get to grips with the most | 0:25:51 | 0:25:54
important of all bush craft skills. | 0:25:54 | 0:25:58
I take it, Jason, this is one of the reasons why | 0:25:58 | 0:26:00
a lot of people come on the course? | 0:26:00 | 0:26:02
Yeah, this is the quintessential bush craft skill | 0:26:02 | 0:26:04
that everybody wants to learn. | 0:26:04 | 0:26:07
And, let's face it, if you can make fire from nothing, | 0:26:07 | 0:26:11
how amazing a feeling can be? | 0:26:11 | 0:26:11
I can't wait to have a go. | 0:26:11 | 0:26:13
Keep it steady. | 0:26:13 | 0:26:15
Lean it against your leg. | 0:26:15 | 0:26:17
That's better. | 0:26:17 | 0:26:18
Don't force it. | 0:26:18 | 0:26:19
Keep your back steady. | 0:26:19 | 0:26:21
Just increase your speed ever so slightly. | 0:26:21 | 0:26:26
Yes! | 0:26:31 | 0:26:32 | |
Slowly squeeze it together. | 0:26:32 | 0:26:36
Ow! | 0:26:42 | 0:26:45 | |
There's not many people on the planet that have done that | 0:26:47 | 0:26:51
and it's warm fire as well. | 0:26:51 | 0:26:57
Well done. | 0:26:57 | 0:26:57
You just scoffed some rabbit, haven't you? | 0:27:05 | 0:27:11
I have scoffed some rabbit, yes. | 0:27:11 | 0:27:12
What was that like? | 0:27:12 | 0:27:13
It was delicious. | 0:27:13 | 0:27:16
Thumper tasted good. | 0:27:16 | 0:27:17
The nights are drawing in and it's getting cold. | 0:27:17 | 0:27:18
Are you prepared? | 0:27:18 | 0:27:19
Absolutely, it's the best bit. | 0:27:19 | 0:27:21
What about the noises? | 0:27:21 | 0:27:24
Last night there were quite a few noises. | 0:27:24 | 0:27:30
Weren't you tempted to sneak into somebody else's tent? | 0:27:30 | 0:27:32
I'm a big strapping man. | 0:27:32 | 0:27:33
Can I come into yours then? | 0:27:33 | 0:27:38
Oh! | 0:27:43 | 0:27:45 | |
When the daylight came, I felt a sense of empowerment. | 0:27:46 | 0:27:52
I felt a sense of achievement. | 0:27:52 | 0:27:54
I felt I had done it and a massive smile came over | 0:27:54 | 0:27:57
my face and I am going to walk down the street with a swagger. | 0:27:57 | 0:28:00
A bigger swagger than I've already got. | 0:28:00 | 0:28:02
And one of the main things is being able to | 0:28:02 | 0:28:05
build a shelter and make fire! | 0:28:05 | 0:28:11
So, there we have it. | 0:28:11 | 0:28:12
I have created my own shelter from scratch, made fire from rubbing | 0:28:12 | 0:28:14
two sticks together, and cooked my own bread and wild trout. | 0:28:14 | 0:28:20
It was a great experience and a very different way to spend the weekend. | 0:28:20 | 0:28:25
I have drawn the line at washing in the wild. | 0:28:25 | 0:28:28
I'm off home to have a nice hot bath. | 0:28:28 | 0:28:30
I think he's earned it, don't you? | 0:28:32 | 0:28:35
And that's it from Nottingham for this week. | 0:28:35 | 0:28:37
Next Monday, the dangers of deer, but do we need a nationwide cull? | 0:28:39 | 0:28:47
It is emotive and it is sad to have to shoot wild animals but what we're | 0:28:47 | 0:28:51
trying to do is create balance. | 0:28:51 | 0:28:54
