Hello and welcome to Loughborough University

0:00:060:00:08

in Leicestershire where world champions come to train

0:00:080:00:10

and where we have come to tell you about the stories that matter

0:00:100:00:13

closer to home.

0:00:130:00:16

Tonight, investigating the Craigslist criminals,

0:00:160:00:17

Jonathan Gibson is in Derby.

0:00:170:00:21

Thing is, mate, I work for the BBC.

0:00:210:00:24

And we're trying to find out, mate, why you're peddling cocaine.

0:00:240:00:27

Why is that?

0:00:270:00:31

How breaststroke Olympic champion Adam Peaty

0:00:350:00:36

is changing lives in Zambia.

0:00:360:00:39

Creating a legacy for me is probably one of the most important things,

0:00:390:00:42

it is how you inspire millions and millions of people

0:00:420:00:44

around the world to do exactly what you've done.

0:00:440:00:48

And any colour as long as it's not black.

0:00:480:00:51

Mike Dilger wants to know why these dogs can't find homes.

0:00:510:00:53

Look at that.

0:00:530:00:55

Absolutely gorgeous.

0:00:550:00:59

I'm Lukwesa Burak and this is Inside Out for the East Midlands.

0:00:590:01:03

First, classified ads.

0:01:140:01:16

Now, what would you be using them to hunt for?

0:01:160:01:20

Furniture, a new car perhaps?

0:01:200:01:23

Well, Jonathan Gibson has been sniffing around in Derby

0:01:230:01:26

where he is investigating one online site where criminals have an eye

0:01:260:01:29

for more than just a bargain.

0:01:290:01:38

As an investigative journalist, it's sometimes easier to work

0:01:380:01:40

when the office is nice and quiet.

0:01:400:01:42

When people aren't watching what you're doing.

0:01:420:01:43

Like investigating the dark web.

0:01:430:01:47

If you're looking for something illegal, it is the go-to part

0:01:470:01:49

of the Internet that's hidden from prying eyes.

0:01:490:01:54

The place where criminals use encrypted websites and virtual

0:01:540:01:57

currencies to trade.

0:01:570:02:01

Trade.

0:02:010:02:03

You don't need to bother with all that, mate.

0:02:030:02:05

I'm sorry?

0:02:050:02:06

You can get all of that on Craigslist.

0:02:060:02:08

Craigslist?

0:02:080:02:09

If you budge up, I'll show you.

0:02:090:02:12

Shouldn't you be getting on with the...?

0:02:120:02:13

No, it's fine, I've got ten minutes.

0:02:130:02:15

Brilliant.

0:02:150:02:18

OK.

0:02:180:02:21

Log on and you can look it up.

0:02:210:02:23

Craigslist.

0:02:230:02:27

Yes, Craigslist.

0:02:270:02:29

It was set up in America by a guy called Craig.

0:02:290:02:35

It is a website where people buy and sell everything,

0:02:350:02:37

and I mean everything.

0:02:370:02:40

Just say where you live and get started.

0:02:400:02:44

But lots of the stuff on Craigslist won't be in the buy and sell section

0:02:440:02:47

of your local newspaper, including bootleg tobacco.

0:02:470:02:50

The kind of cigs you'd probably buy from some dodgy

0:02:540:02:57

geezer outside a pub or, in this case,

0:02:570:02:59

a supermarket car park.

0:02:590:03:01

I've literally just started.

0:03:010:03:02

So are they knocked off then?

0:03:020:03:04

Yeah.

0:03:040:03:05

Oh, right.

0:03:050:03:06

They can't really sell them in shops any more.

0:03:060:03:09

So where do you get them from?

0:03:090:03:10

I don't...

0:03:100:03:11

Sorry.

0:03:110:03:14

And they import the tobacco.

0:03:140:03:15

Cool, OK.

0:03:150:03:18

So he's just a middleman.

0:03:180:03:20

He says his supplier's someone else on Craigslist.

0:03:200:03:23

I've seen some crazy stuff on Craigslist.

0:03:230:03:27

So have I.

0:03:270:03:29

That's why I've come to another car park,

0:03:290:03:31

ready for another dodgy deal.

0:03:310:03:33

It's counterfeit, yeah?

0:03:330:03:34

Yeah.

0:03:340:03:38

And that's why his tobacco is just a third of the price

0:03:380:03:41

of the real stuff.

0:03:410:03:44

Do you smoke it yourself, mate?

0:03:440:03:45

Yeah, I smoke it.

0:03:450:03:46

Can you tell the difference?

0:03:460:03:48

No, I can't tell the difference.

0:03:480:03:50

But there is a difference.

0:03:500:03:53

Because counterfeit goods are among the things Craigslist says you're

0:03:530:03:56

not supposed to sell on its website.

0:03:560:03:58

Stuff that's illegal.

0:03:580:04:00

Yeah, but no one takes any notice of that!

0:04:000:04:03

Do you mind?

0:04:030:04:07

But he's got a point.

0:04:070:04:08

Look at this.

0:04:080:04:10

It is as easy to find marijuana on Craigslist

0:04:100:04:13

as it is a second-hand sofa.

0:04:130:04:15

And you might need a seat because what I'm buying next

0:04:150:04:18

could knock you off your feet.

0:04:180:04:22

I'm on a Derby estate to meet a dealer selling

0:04:220:04:24

cocaine on Craigslist.

0:04:240:04:25

80, mate, yeah?

0:04:250:04:27

Yeah.

0:04:270:04:28

All right, mate, ideal.

0:04:280:04:29

Sound, yeah, see you later.

0:04:290:04:30

Cheers.

0:04:300:04:34

The deal done in seconds, but is it the real deal?

0:04:340:04:38

Turns out, as street cocaine goes, it's pretty pure stuff,

0:04:380:04:41

so what's it doing on Craigslist?

0:04:410:04:44

Well, I'm shocked.

0:04:440:04:45

I'm shocked at what's there because it's not difficult

0:04:450:04:48

for the Internet companies to put elements onto their websites

0:04:480:04:51

to police this sort of stuff and they should be policing it

0:04:510:04:53

and taking it down.

0:04:530:04:57

But if you have made money from crime, you won't want

0:04:570:05:00

the police to find it.

0:05:000:05:01

What you need is someone to hide it, perhaps in their bank account.

0:05:010:05:06

It's called money-laundering, but where would I find

0:05:060:05:08

someone to do that?

0:05:080:05:12

On a street corner I'm meeting Stacey.

0:05:130:05:17

She's offering her bank account on Craigslist to anyone

0:05:170:05:20

who wants to use it.

0:05:200:05:22

But we are walking into the bank to pay in what I've told her

0:05:300:05:34

is money made from crime.

0:05:340:05:35

She'll charge me a fee to get it back and there are plenty of people

0:05:350:05:39

on Craigslist offering to do the same thing, sometimes

0:05:390:05:41

through overseas bank accounts.

0:05:410:05:44

But if you've sent your money overseas, how are you

0:05:440:05:47

going to get it back?

0:05:470:05:49

What you need is a new identity, or better still, somebody else's.

0:05:490:05:52

You again?

0:05:520:05:53

Yeah!

0:05:530:05:54

And I know just the place you can get it.

0:05:540:05:57

Don't say it!

0:05:570:05:59

Craigslist.

0:05:590:06:01

The place where I can find a stolen passport.

0:06:010:06:09

And there are plenty more where that came from.

0:06:090:06:11

I've known some stories where it's taken people ten years to get

0:06:110:06:14

I've known some stories where it's taken people ten years to get

0:06:210:06:24

there credit ratings back again after it being completely

0:06:240:06:32

trashed by people who have stolen their identities.

0:06:320:06:34

But it will allow you to get on and commit other crimes

0:06:340:06:37

and that's why they're doing it.

0:06:370:06:38

On Craigslist there's also disorganised crime.

0:06:380:06:40

This guy wants someone to pass his driving theory test for him.

0:06:400:06:43

So what's the deal, mate?

0:06:430:06:44

I go in and take it.

0:06:440:06:52

But for 50 quid it's not that black and white.

0:06:520:06:58

For a start, he's black and I'm white and someone's going to notice.

0:06:580:07:02

They check your photo against their database.

0:07:020:07:03

There's no point, there's no way I'm going to get through.

0:07:030:07:07

When I later revealed I'm a journalist, he didn't

0:07:070:07:13

have anything to say.

0:07:130:07:18

And neither did Craigslist.

0:07:180:07:20

In fact, when we asked it for an interview,

0:07:200:07:22

this is what it told us.

0:07:220:07:29

And that came from the top, the chief executive's office.

0:07:290:07:32

I think whilst they are making money, and whilst nobody is turning

0:07:320:07:35

around and asking them, forcing them to try to change

0:07:350:07:41

what is going on, you will find sites like this using the ostrich

0:07:410:07:44

effect, sticking their head in the sand and ignoring it.

0:07:440:07:49

No wonder criminals can carry on regardless.

0:07:490:07:51

Well, unless they're really selling to a journalist.

0:07:510:07:53

I work for the BBC, if you look out there at the camera.

0:07:530:07:56

Oh no.

0:07:560:07:57

I knew this was going to happen.

0:07:570:07:59

I'd like to know why you're offering to sell...

0:07:590:08:01

Because I'm trying to get out of debt.

0:08:010:08:03

You're trying to get out of debt?

0:08:030:08:04

Yeah.

0:08:040:08:05

Oh my god, my mother's going to kill me.

0:08:050:08:08

But he's not the only one thinking about his relatives.

0:08:080:08:10

So why are you doing it?

0:08:100:08:11

I don't know why I'm doing it to be honest.

0:08:110:08:14

I'm trying to make money for my family.

0:08:140:08:16

But at least they are talking.

0:08:160:08:17

Take a good look at my cocaine dealer because he's

0:08:170:08:21

not around for long.

0:08:210:08:22

Thing is, mate, I work for the BBC.

0:08:220:08:24

And we're...

0:08:240:08:26

Trying to find out, mate, why you're peddling cocaine.

0:08:260:08:29

Why is that?

0:08:300:08:35

Well, he wasn't hanging about, was he?

0:08:350:08:38

So how about Stacey?

0:08:380:08:42

Will she want to talk?

0:08:420:08:49

I'm trying to find out why you're willing to launder money for people,

0:08:490:08:52

why you're actually doing that, Stacey.

0:08:520:08:55

You knew it was risky.

0:08:550:09:00

Would you like to explain...

0:09:000:09:01

I've got nothing to say to you.

0:09:010:09:03

Just like my passport thief.

0:09:030:09:04

I'm not buying a passport off you, mate, because I work for the BBC

0:09:040:09:08

and I want to know why you're selling stolen passports, mate.

0:09:080:09:10

Why are you doing it?

0:09:100:09:12

Why are you selling stolen passports?

0:09:120:09:15

The amount of organised crime that there is sitting behind

0:09:150:09:18

everything you have shown there is frightening and it's

0:09:180:09:22

critical I think that the police force or the law-enforcement

0:09:220:09:27

agencies force the likes of Craigslist to do something about it.

0:09:270:09:34

So what is the government doing?

0:09:340:09:36

When we asked to interview a minister, all we got was a Home

0:09:360:09:39

Office statement saying it's...

0:09:390:09:47

Well, we've kind of done that for them already.

0:09:470:09:49

Well, told you.

0:09:490:09:50

So maybe it's time the government forced websites like Craigslist

0:09:500:09:53

to clean up their act.

0:09:530:09:56

That was Jonathan Gibson reporting there.

0:09:580:10:03

Now, he's a world and Olympic champion and he also trains right

0:10:030:10:06

here at Loughborough University.

0:10:060:10:13

Swimmer Adam Peaty is arguably one of the biggest stars in the sporting

0:10:130:10:20

world right now but he says that what matters to him is his legacy,

0:10:200:10:24

not here in the UK but some 5000 miles away.

0:10:240:10:26

Natalie Jackson has the story.

0:10:260:10:28

Adam Peaty, Olympic and world champion.

0:10:280:10:37

No one's been faster than him in the history of mankind.

0:10:370:10:39

He is unstoppable right now.

0:10:390:10:40

25.95!

0:10:400:10:42

I never thought I would live to see the day...

0:10:420:10:44

You know, he's the Usain Bolt of swimming in terms

0:10:440:10:47

of what he does, the fastest man on the planet in two events

0:10:470:10:50

and by some considerable margin.

0:10:500:10:52

Britain's waited 40 years for a predator

0:10:520:10:56

in the pool like Peaty.

0:10:560:10:59

They call him the British Lion.

0:10:590:11:04

I'm very proud to be British and I'm not really intimidated

0:11:040:11:06

by anyone or anything.

0:11:070:11:07

I think that's why I got that nickname.

0:11:070:11:11

But what goes on behind the eyes and in the mind

0:11:110:11:14

of an athlete like Adam?

0:11:140:11:23

He's the figurehead people look to.

0:11:230:11:24

We know we can rely on him to deliver.

0:11:240:11:26

The nation knows that if we need to go to hunt, he's at the front.

0:11:260:11:30

And what the nation doesn't know is the surprising sacrifice made

0:11:300:11:32

by Peaty and the extraordinary journey alongside his swimming that

0:11:320:11:35

made him the all conquering champion he is today.

0:11:350:11:41

Each day Adam and his coach Mel are up at 6am completing two

0:11:410:11:45

three-hour sessions, six days a week.

0:11:450:11:54

At peak training Adam will swim seven miles a day.

0:11:540:12:01

So, on one of his few, rare weeks off a year,

0:12:010:12:03

what on earth is he doing in Zambia?

0:12:030:12:05

Who would want to eat that?!

0:12:050:12:09

The food is basic, the accommodation is too.

0:12:090:12:11

Adam and his coach, Mel Marshall, have got a team of 16 friends

0:12:110:12:14

together for a sporting challenge.

0:12:140:12:18

So it's 50 hours of sport in five days, five different

0:12:180:12:21

sports to raise ?50,000.

0:12:210:12:24

Mel's been out to Zambia seven times.

0:12:240:12:28

Every time I've been out before it's to either raise

0:12:280:12:31

funds or raise awareness.

0:12:310:12:32

You know, it is progressing but the problems are still the same.

0:12:320:12:41

It's the close bond between Mel and Adam that

0:12:410:12:44

first brought him here.

0:12:440:12:46

Five years ago Adam Peaty came out here to Zambia.

0:12:460:12:51

He was just 17, taking part in a charity bike ride to raise

0:12:510:12:54

funds for centres like this.

0:12:540:12:57

Back then he was swimming in local pools, no one had ever heard of him.

0:12:570:13:00

He has returned today as the Olympic champion and now making a difference

0:13:000:13:08

to thousands of young Africans' lives.

0:13:080:13:14

Today is a big day for them both.

0:13:140:13:16

They are opening the sports centre they raised ?35,000 to build.

0:13:160:13:23

The legacy for me is probably one of the most important things.

0:13:230:13:26

Yes, it is about the medals, it's about the world record,

0:13:260:13:29

but it's how you inspire millions and millions of people around

0:13:290:13:31

the world to do what you have done.

0:13:310:13:38

They don't have to be the next best breaststroker in the world

0:13:380:13:41

or world record-holder, but they can be the best teachers,

0:13:410:13:43

the best coaches and that's the beauty about sport.

0:13:430:13:45

I did say to Mel the other day, I think she'll have a tear

0:13:450:13:48

in her eye when she walks through the gates here this morning

0:13:480:13:51

because we can show you pictures of what this place looked

0:13:510:13:54

like a year ago and the transformation here...

0:13:540:13:56

This kind of thing doesn't happen in Zambia.

0:13:560:14:05

The facility we built from 2012, ?35,000, five years ago,

0:14:050:14:08

it is amazing to see such a place develop like that and the kids

0:14:080:14:11

using it and the whole families going in there and taking advantage

0:14:110:14:14

of the situation which is so empowering, that

0:14:140:14:16

what we can do here, maybe build another one

0:14:160:14:19

of them and in a few years build another one.

0:14:190:14:21

CHEERING.

0:14:210:14:24

This playground is the only one of its kind in the country.

0:14:240:14:31

This place used to be a dump a long time, people used

0:14:310:14:34

to kill each other here, they used to take drugs here.

0:14:340:14:37

But now it is a playpark and people can have fun.

0:14:370:14:41

Basketball has really done something nice to my life,

0:14:410:14:44

I have gone to places I have never thought I would go.

0:14:440:14:48

Even today I never thought I would be here but basketball

0:14:480:14:52

has brought me here.

0:14:520:14:53

Poverty in Zambia is extreme.

0:14:530:14:57

85% of the population is under 35.

Rob Day is part of the Sporting Challenge team and lived

0:15:030:15:06

out here for a year.

0:15:060:15:09

It's extremely poor in this area.

0:15:090:15:11

It's about one tap to every hundred households.

0:15:110:15:14

Kids don't have shoes, they have maybe one set of clothes,

0:15:140:15:20

but this is a community where you've got roughly about maybe 3000 or 4000

0:15:200:15:23

people who are HIV-positive.

0:15:230:15:24

So what Adam's doing out here is absolutely vital.

0:15:240:15:30

At 12, Blessings Muleng's mother died and his father deserted him.

0:15:300:15:36

On that night we were on the street and some others came and beat

0:15:360:15:41

up my sister and me.

0:15:410:15:42

And they got my sister.

0:15:420:15:45

Since that I never spoken to my sister again.

0:15:450:15:47

Blessings was left in a wheelchair.

0:15:470:15:49

His story, though, is not uncommon.

0:15:490:15:54

Steven Siame's parents both died when he was just 11.

0:15:540:15:58

Sport and this centre saved his life.

0:15:580:16:04

If I share my story with them, they can be motivated and say, yes,

0:16:040:16:07

I think my life can change too.

0:16:070:16:10

If Steven was in this situation, now he is changed, now

0:16:100:16:13

he is a football coach.

0:16:130:16:16

This programme, Adam Peaty and Mel Marshall and the group,

0:16:160:16:18

it has changed my life.

0:16:180:16:21

These sporting centres are for more than just sport.

0:16:210:16:30

They are schools and orphanages, safe places.

0:16:300:16:32

The coaches and volunteers here take on the role of the parents.

0:16:320:16:35

We have a lot of the kids kind of ask you, not even about sports

0:16:350:16:38

stuff but life skills stuff.

0:16:380:16:40

You get older kids approaching you about personal issues to do

0:16:400:16:43

with like stuff at home, and, as we know, some

0:16:430:16:45

of the issues they go through like domestic violence.

0:16:450:16:50

Many of the horrific stories come from the girls.

0:16:500:16:54

Almost 50% of women between the ages of 15 and 49 have experienced

0:16:540:16:58

gender-based violence.

0:16:580:17:01

I think the youngest we had was raped, that was a case

0:17:010:17:04

we had in Livingstone.

0:17:040:17:10

She was about 13 years old and this was a girl coming from school,

0:17:100:17:14

going home and she was raped along the way.

0:17:140:17:16

Almost half of all the cases of sexual violence reported

0:17:160:17:18

to the police are children under 16.

0:17:180:17:22

So here no one can touch them.

0:17:220:17:25

They all know that being touched on the body, if you don't want

0:17:250:17:28

someone to touch you...

0:17:280:17:30

The Sporting Challenge group were moved to tears on hearing

0:17:300:17:35

about three girls left alone to sleep in a dormitory

0:17:350:17:38

with a group of boys.

0:17:380:17:41

Girls here have a really hard time, they are just not treated the same.

0:17:410:17:44

Their childhood is filled with rape, with abuse, with hitting

0:17:440:17:48

and it's just accepted.

0:17:480:17:49

They've got no voice, no nothing.

0:17:490:17:54

What they need is beds, to create a separate girls dormitory,

0:17:540:17:56

so that's what they go out and do.

0:17:570:18:05

These are the programmes which are bringing my dreams back.

0:18:170:18:22

I'm smiling now from the child who was just nobody on the street,

0:18:220:18:25

not knowing anything.

0:18:250:18:26

Here I am today speaking on the camera!

0:18:260:18:31

I've been very fortunate to have Mel and kind

0:18:390:18:41

of realise from a young age, it's not all about the medals.

0:18:410:18:45

It's how you translate those, especially the Olympic

0:18:450:18:47

ones and the world ones, how you translate those

0:18:470:18:49

to a global cause.

0:18:490:18:52

You've got to help meet as many people as possible.

0:18:520:18:56

If I don't teach them about life as well as sport, what am I?

0:18:560:18:59

What am I to him in his life?

0:18:590:19:02

That is the two parts of sport.

0:19:020:19:03

There is the personal side and the performance side

0:19:030:19:07

and you have to take care of both.

0:19:070:19:09

It's just, make sure you're surrounded by the real world,

0:19:090:19:12

I think that's really important.

0:19:120:19:17

If we come together and help one another, we can change the world

0:19:170:19:22

through sports for so many things.

0:19:220:19:23

Yes.

0:19:230:19:24

We are one.

0:19:240:19:26

Zambia!

0:19:260:19:30

That was Adam Peaty and his coach Mel, proving that sport can

0:19:320:19:35

have an influence well beyond the medals podium.

0:19:350:19:40

Now, is colour prejudice alive and well here in the East Midlands?

0:19:400:19:45

No, I'm not talking about that colour prejudice.

0:19:450:19:48

It seems that when it comes to choosing our pets,

0:19:480:19:51

we are actually discriminating against black animals.

0:19:510:19:55

In fact, this Friday has been designated National Black Cat Day

0:19:550:19:58

to try to raise awareness of the issue.

0:19:580:20:04

Mike Dilger has been investigating a new phenomenon known as BDS,

0:20:040:20:06

or black dog syndrome.

0:20:060:20:13

We are a nation of animal lovers, as I know only too well.

0:20:130:20:19

I have made my living from filming all creatures great and small,

0:20:190:20:21

mainly out in the wild.

0:20:220:20:27

But we also adore our animal companions with around 8.5 million

0:20:270:20:30

dogs or 7.5 million cats, the UK's pet population

0:20:300:20:32

is definitely on the up!

0:20:320:20:35

But it seems we are pretty picky when it comes to choosing a pet.

0:20:350:20:45

Which do you love the most?

0:20:450:20:48

Is it chocolate, yellow or black?

0:20:480:20:53

There are three labradors there, which one do you like the most?

0:20:530:20:56

The one in the middle.

0:20:560:20:58

The chocolate one?

0:20:580:20:59

The chocolate one.

0:20:590:21:00

Thank you very much.

0:21:000:21:01

Double chocolate?

0:21:010:21:02

Yes.

0:21:020:21:03

So one yellow and one chocolate?

0:21:030:21:04

Yes.

0:21:040:21:07

Which of those dogs do you like the most?

0:21:070:21:09

I like the chocolate one in the middle.

0:21:090:21:11

Possibly yellow or black.

0:21:110:21:12

I like the yellow one.

0:21:120:21:13

Can I not pick all of them?

0:21:130:21:16

You can't pick all of them.

0:21:160:21:17

Which one do you like the most?

0:21:170:21:19

The middle one.

0:21:190:21:20

The chocolate one?

0:21:200:21:21

Yes.

0:21:210:21:22

The results are in, the votes have been counted

0:21:220:21:24

and the decision is final.

0:21:240:21:26

Winning, with an astonishing 15 votes, is Beef,

0:21:260:21:28

the chocolate labrador.

0:21:280:21:34

In second place, Beth gets eight votes.

0:21:340:21:36

And last is black labrador Lindy.

0:21:360:21:44

These 30 random votes were just a bit of fun,

0:21:440:21:50

however in a study published by Psychology Today,

0:21:500:21:52

it seems people perceive black dogs as being more aggressive.

0:21:520:21:55

With lighter shades being thought of as friendlier.

0:21:550:21:58

So is there any truth in all this?

0:21:580:22:01

Give me a paw.

0:22:010:22:05

Roger Mugford is a leading animal psychologist and he has his

0:22:050:22:08

own thoughts on BDS, black dog syndrome.

0:22:080:22:15

Roger, it's hard to believe that Oscar was on doggie

0:22:150:22:17

death row until recently.

0:22:180:22:21

And apparently the statistics are that thousands and thousands

0:22:210:22:23

of other dogs that are black or have, if you like,

0:22:230:22:26

monochrome colouration are in the same boat,

0:22:260:22:28

and cats too.

0:22:280:22:30

So there's a deep prejudice about the colours of dogs and cats.

0:22:300:22:36

If you look at dogs in fiction, Cerberus, the dog to the underworld,

0:22:360:22:39

and hound of the Baskervilles, all big, black, aggressive,

0:22:390:22:41

associated with death.

0:22:410:22:42

And of course their white teeth do show up.

0:22:420:22:44

So are they more aggressive?

0:22:440:22:45

No, no, no.

0:22:450:22:49

Maybe black dogs get avoided more by other dogs because other dogs

0:22:490:22:52

also have difficulty reading their facial expressions,

0:22:520:22:53

and by people, but it is entirely in the mind of the beholder.

0:22:530:22:58

The Greyhound Trust re-homes around 4000 retired racing dogs every year

0:23:000:23:03

and with a number of regional branches in the East Midlands,

0:23:030:23:06

they currently have around 800 dogs looking for new homes.

0:23:060:23:13

Many of these are black.

0:23:130:23:17

The charity say that colour prejudice is currently a big

0:23:170:23:21

problem, particularly with this breed, and they are overwhelmed

0:23:210:23:23

with black retired greyhounds.

0:23:230:23:28

Joe, what a lovely dog.

0:23:280:23:29

Who is this?

0:23:290:23:32

This is Captain, he is nine years old, he's actually been

0:23:320:23:35

with the Greyhound Trust now for a whopping six years,

0:23:350:23:37

he's one of our longest stay dogs in the country and I have

0:23:370:23:40

no idea why.

0:23:400:23:41

He's fabulous.

0:23:410:23:42

Did you think the fact that black greyhounds may be overlooked

0:23:420:23:45

is the same as it is with any breed of dog?

0:23:450:23:47

I think absolutely, any homing organisation does report that black

0:23:470:23:50

dogs tend to be the hardest to home, they tend to spend

0:23:500:23:53

the most time with them.

0:23:530:23:54

And it is a challenge for everybody but particularly for us

0:23:540:23:57

with greyhounds because recent racing breeding practices

0:23:570:23:58

have meant that so many greyhounds now are black.

0:23:580:24:04

Recently, well over half of all racing greyhounds were born black.

0:24:040:24:08

Many of these are related to a couple of successful racing

0:24:080:24:13

dogs called Head Honcho and his offspring, Top Honcho.

0:24:130:24:17

Both were prolifically bred from during the 1990s and carried

0:24:170:24:20

a dominant gene giving them black fur.

0:24:200:24:25

The Greyhound Trust say they now have difficulty re-homing hundreds

0:24:250:24:28

of black retired racing dogs.

0:24:280:24:31

It's all about personality, or it should be, really.

0:24:310:24:36

Especially with such a placid personality like this.

0:24:360:24:38

Look at that.

0:24:380:24:39

Isn't he absolutely gorgeous?

0:24:390:24:43

They are absolutely the best, they really are.

0:24:430:24:45

And the most important thing is, it's all about getting the right

0:24:450:24:48

character and the right match for your family because ultimately

0:24:480:24:50

your dog is going to be a family member so it's vital they're

0:24:500:24:53

going to fit in and enjoy life with you.

0:24:530:24:56

So can campaign change public opinion?

0:24:560:25:01

In Scotland members of the WI knitted coloured caps for black

0:25:010:25:04

dogs looking for homes.

0:25:040:25:06

In America, one chap started a photographic project

0:25:060:25:09

to try to highlight the issues in his hometown.

0:25:090:25:15

And his pictures, as a result, went viral.

0:25:150:25:21

Fred, in the UK black dog syndrome seems to be an issue,

0:25:210:25:24

particularly amongst animals being re-homed.

0:25:240:25:27

What is the case in the United States?

0:25:270:25:31

It's definitely an issue across the country and I think it's

0:25:310:25:33

just a matter of people having a better understanding of,

0:25:330:25:36

it's not always about matching furniture and making sure it looks

0:25:360:25:39

nice, it's the best personality of the type of dogs and black dogs

0:25:390:25:42

often get the short end of the stick.

0:25:420:25:46

So you think you're managing, with your photographs, to kind

0:25:460:25:48

of turn around this misperception?

0:25:480:25:50

Absolutely.

0:25:500:25:51

When I'm trying to create photos, a lot has to do with getting just

0:25:510:25:54

the right light and then making sure the dog is comfortable in that space

0:25:540:25:58

and being able to show the expression and the personality

0:25:580:26:01

of that dog.

0:26:010:26:08

It seems colour prejudice is not just confined to dogs.

0:26:080:26:12

Black cats can be unpopular too.

0:26:120:26:13

In a recent survey by Cats Protection, they found that

0:26:130:26:16

black cats would have to wait, on average, 22% longer before

0:26:160:26:19

finding a permanent home.

0:26:190:26:25

It's a real tragedy, especially for ones as friendly,

0:26:250:26:28

inquisitive and amiable as this little fella.

0:26:280:26:33

We're not sure how many black cats there are in Britain

0:26:330:26:37

or what percentage of the cat population they make up,

0:26:370:26:39

but just like the black greyhounds, they are certainly overrepresented

0:26:390:26:42

in animal shelters, like this one in Nuttall in Nottinghamshire.

0:26:420:26:47

Kevin, having done just a quick tot up, it strikes me over

0:26:470:26:50

half your cats are black or principally black.

0:26:500:26:56

That's right.

0:26:560:26:57

We don't understand it because at any one time

0:26:570:26:59

within Cats Protection, which has 5000 cats, almost half

0:26:590:27:01

will be black or black and white.

0:27:010:27:07

It's obviously not all just about looks.

0:27:070:27:09

I understand there is a national awareness campaign to try

0:27:090:27:11

to persuade people that black cats are just as exciting.

0:27:110:27:13

Absolutely.

0:27:130:27:14

It is Friday October 27th, National Black Cat Day.

0:27:140:27:17

We're trying to get across to people that colour does not come into it,

0:27:170:27:20

it should be down to the personality traits and exactly what would fit in

0:27:200:27:23

with your circumstances and family.

0:27:230:27:25

And I have to say, I really like the sentiment of your poster.

0:27:250:27:28

It's what's inside that counts.

0:27:280:27:32

Absolutely.

0:27:320:27:38

So we've been looking at black dogs and black cats throughout this

0:27:380:27:41

programme and looking at why they are not being chosen.

0:27:410:27:44

Is the problem with us?

0:27:440:27:47

It is absolutely with society and our perception of these animals

0:27:470:27:50

and we've got to change it.

0:27:500:27:51

Anybody watching this programme will have met I'm sure

0:27:510:27:56

lots of fantastic beautiful black cats and this beautiful black dog,

0:27:560:27:58

and they will want to rush out to the local re-homing charity

0:27:580:28:01

and see if there is one there for them.

0:28:010:28:04

So the message is clear, look beyond the coat because black

0:28:040:28:07

dogs like this and black cats have just as much personality and

0:28:070:28:10

charisma as their colourful cousins.

0:28:100:28:11

And surely a dog like Captain deserves a home after six years.

0:28:110:28:15

Come on, you know you want to!

0:28:150:28:25

Wasn't he gorgeous?

0:28:300:28:33

Well, that's it from us here at Loughborough University.

0:28:330:28:35

Here's a look at what's coming up next week.

0:28:350:28:40

Mia Ayliffe-Chung from Derbyshire was killed whilst trying

0:28:410:28:43

to extend her Australian visa.

0:28:430:28:46

Now her mother is campaigning for change.

0:28:460:28:49

Trying to bring kids like Mia home in one piece,

0:28:490:28:51

It's claimed she appeared "anxious" during a dinner
