each of them to a supermarket but Phil Collins written on the label of | :03:14. | :03:19.
the products they are buying. According to Andy, that is often not | :03:20. | :03:26.
happening. Consumers should care about this because they should be | :03:27. | :03:31.
able to trust what is printed on the label. If businesses are not | :03:32. | :03:37.
sticking to the rules, we should know about it. Group have busy | :03:38. | :03:47.
shopping, busy selecting foodstuffs that make food claims. And he is | :03:48. | :03:53.
joined by more food science expert. He will tell us what is wrong with | :03:54. | :03:59.
the labels. Paul will hopefully shed some light on the scientific terms | :04:00. | :04:02.
which most of us would not understand. What on earth is | :04:03. | :04:09.
electoral weight? First a breakfast cereal. It's easier, warts do good | :04:10. | :04:20.
things to your insides. It then says the panic to tapes of fibre. This TV | :04:21. | :04:33.
make you feel better for longer. Lots of health claims there. Any | :04:34. | :04:39.
term there has to be approved by the European Commission. They are all | :04:40. | :04:43.
listed on the register. The one they are bothered about here is that it | :04:44. | :04:50.
makes you so far longer. The idea is that it will be more slowly digested | :04:51. | :04:57.
and will stay in that got longer. Because of the way the body works, | :04:58. | :05:01.
they did not find sufficient only problem | :05:02. | :05:08.
they did not find sufficient evidence to support that notion. | :05:09. | :05:11.
Therefore, they have not approved these. To see this cereal will keep | :05:12. | :05:19.
you through for longer is not proven and should not be written on the | :05:20. | :05:26.
packet. Next up, antioxidants, a very popular current freeze. On the | :05:27. | :05:32.
front, it says C Occident antioxidants. I do not think that is | :05:33. | :05:47.
true at all. The product claims that it will help you be your best, to | :05:48. | :05:53.
shame great. It is not substantiated in all, so it cannot be backed up. I | :05:54. | :05:58.
thought antioxidants were good for you. Our body is metabolising, part | :05:59. | :06:12.
of the process the release from the blood cells are free radicals. Some | :06:13. | :06:17.
of these escape and could cause damage if not mopped up. The idea is | :06:18. | :06:23.
that if you consume antioxidants is that they will prevent these free | :06:24. | :06:28.
radicals doing any damage to your body. The General medical consensus | :06:29. | :06:35.
is that these antioxidants are not capable of actually doing that. Our | :06:36. | :06:41.
bodies one antioxidant defences are actually much stronger. That is why | :06:42. | :06:47.
you cannot suggest they will improve your health on food labels. Coconut | :06:48. | :06:57.
water is the current train. Restore your natural balance with this | :06:58. | :07:04.
water. Packed with naturally electrolytes, which help keep your | :07:05. | :07:10.
body hydrated and healthy. Electrolytes are simply small | :07:11. | :07:16.
charged mineral molecules. The one you would know best is sodium | :07:17. | :07:23.
chloride, or salt. The idea is that by taking this, it will keep you | :07:24. | :07:27.
hydrated. What I will how we treat you. So the question is, is this | :07:28. | :07:32.
actually better than water. This coconut does not have enough | :07:33. | :07:39.
electrolytes in it to make any serious health benefit claim. It has | :07:40. | :07:55.
been claimed that whey protein can increase muscle mass. We contacted | :07:56. | :08:03.
the four companies in question. The company which makes the coconut | :08:04. | :08:07.
water stands by its claim and says it follows European Union | :08:08. | :08:14.
regulations. But both work two experts maintain it as a | :08:15. | :08:21.
non-authorised claim. Coca-Cola, behind the antioxidant water CVR | :08:22. | :08:27.
reviewing all the wine which the panic to make the claim clearer. | :08:28. | :08:35.
Update say they are redoing the label, which will be ready this | :08:36. | :08:39.
month, but the sand by the belief that the product is good for you. | :08:40. | :08:47.
And the director of the past warts agreed to meet with me. A couple of | :08:48. | :08:53.
experts have picked out one freeze, makes you feel better for longer. | :08:54. | :09:00.
Why did you make that claim? It is a really good question. They are | :09:01. | :09:05.
absolutely right. As soon as we were told we could not make that claim, | :09:06. | :09:11.
we agreed that the rate. We got it wrong and we will change it so that | :09:12. | :09:15.
next time we print the packages, we will take that claim. She still | :09:16. | :09:21.
believes that the product does make you feel fuller for longer, even of | :09:22. | :09:29.
the evidence does not believe that they have broken any European Union | :09:30. | :09:32.
regulations. Is it not your business to normal this sort of stuff? If I | :09:33. | :09:39.
feel we said something which was not rate, that we were misleading | :09:40. | :09:44.
people, I would be really upset. We're a small family business. We're | :09:45. | :09:48.
never going to be doing the research that allows us to make specific | :09:49. | :09:53.
claims and that is not what we are about. We are about general | :09:54. | :09:59.
well-being. This example shows that it is not that straightforward. It | :10:00. | :10:04.
is something our shoppers agree with. They just want everything to | :10:05. | :10:10.
be clean and simple. We do not have the time to read the full | :10:11. | :10:15.
instruction manual. And that compares to the product next to it. | :10:16. | :10:19.
You could spend months in a supermarket simply doing their | :10:20. | :10:24.
weekly shopping. It should be up to the manufacturers to take | :10:25. | :10:28.
responsibility. Save what is on the product and let that sell itself. Do | :10:29. | :10:32.
not actually try and wrap it up into something it is not. | :10:33. | :10:36.
If there is something you think we should be looking | :10:37. | :10:38.
at in the programme, please get in touch with me | :10:39. | :10:41.
This is Inside Out on BBC One. at the following... | :10:42. | :10:45.
Later on, I am with two divers, who take me on an aquatic trail. | :10:46. | :10:53.
People would just not believe how colourful it is. | :10:54. | :10:55.
of amazing seaweed. you just see these waves | :10:56. | :11:05.
Their numbers have been dropping. had their share of disease. | :11:06. | :11:09.
Julie Reinger has more. more warrens deserted. | :11:10. | :11:19.
Rabbits - cute furry creatures, loved by children and adults alike. | :11:20. | :11:24.
And from family pet to countryside, they are a familiar sight. | :11:25. | :11:27.
well, like rabbits! as they famously breed, | :11:28. | :11:34.
So, why have rabbit numbers been dropping in recent years? | :11:35. | :11:40.
To the west of Norwich lies Breckland. | :11:41. | :11:42.
Norfolk and Suffolk. that straddles inland | :11:43. | :11:49.
Rabbits have been helping shape this landscape for centuries. | :11:50. | :11:52.
rabbit activity here since the '70s. of East Anglia have been monitoring | :11:53. | :11:59.
I have come to the oldest Breckland nature reserve, East Wretham Heath, | :12:00. | :12:02.
to meet conservation scientist, Phoebe Miles. | :12:03. | :12:04.
So, what does your work involve here? | :12:05. | :12:17.
We are interested in how rabbits modify the environment, | :12:18. | :12:19.
to the benefit of lots of heathland species. | :12:20. | :12:21.
Lots of plants and insects, as well as birds. | :12:22. | :12:27.
you are seeing in front of you now. open turf habitat that | :12:28. | :12:34.
No, that is right. there are plenty of rabbits, | :12:35. | :12:40.
So, just on the other side of the reserve, | :12:41. | :12:42.
across the road, we have seen a massive drop in rabbit numbers, | :12:43. | :12:45.
And why do you think that is? census was completed. | :12:46. | :13:09.
such as fox and stoat. on by several animals, | :13:10. | :13:12.
There are several reasons. of myxomatosis and also RHD. | :13:13. | :13:19.
Predation. reasons, if you like. | :13:20. | :13:25.
such as fox and stoat. on by several animals, | :13:26. | :13:29.
But also, we have got a problem of myxomatosis and also RHD. | :13:30. | :13:32.
further suppressing rabbit numbers. is a new variant RHD2 that could be | :13:33. | :13:37.
To find out about this new virus, I am visiting UEA in Norwich. | :13:38. | :13:40.
for the last 30 years. population of rabbits | :13:41. | :13:44.
But the numbers has been dropping here, too. | :13:45. | :13:54.
was starting to decline? that the population | :13:55. | :13:57.
In March-April time, we started to see babies | :13:58. | :14:01.
disappearing and, instead of the campus being alive with baby | :14:02. | :14:05.
in three or four weeks. there was this mass die-off | :14:06. | :14:11.
being killed by disease. or survived are now | :14:12. | :14:18.
So, this is not myxomatosis, but a new disease? | :14:19. | :14:21.
Rabbit Haemorrhagic Disease 2. virus, called RHD2 - | :14:22. | :14:27.
It has come from intensive Chinese rabbit farms, | :14:28. | :14:30.
where they export rabbits to farms in Europe. | :14:31. | :14:36.
And it was first reported in the UK in 2010. | :14:37. | :14:51.
It is countrywide, all the way from the north of Scotland don't do here. | :14:52. | :14:59.
There are no obvious external signs of the disease. | :15:00. | :15:01.
Instead, the rabbits appear lethargic and die underground. | :15:02. | :15:04.
It can infect hares. on to other species? | :15:05. | :15:08.
It can kill hares and, also, pet rabbits are at risk. | :15:09. | :15:25.
He numbers have also decreased usually. | :15:26. | :15:34.
But it is not just conservationists and scientists who are worried. | :15:35. | :15:36.
It is affecting some businesses, too. | :15:37. | :15:38.
As well as being a food source for birds of prey, stoats and foxes, | :15:39. | :15:58.
rabbits have also formed part of our diet since Norman times. | :15:59. | :16:01.
And are now, of course, an emblem of the wild food movement. | :16:02. | :16:04.
Have to tog up. Gooch, of the Wild Meat Company. | :16:05. | :16:10.
10,000 rabbits every year. the company sells an average around | :16:11. | :16:33.
Why has become increasingly popular? I think people are very keen to know | :16:34. | :16:40.
Rabbit is our biggest seller. from. | :16:41. | :16:43.
About here, people like lean wild meat not farmed. | :16:44. | :16:55.
We does the meat come from? All it comes from local suppliers. We have | :16:56. | :17:10.
noticed that some of our suppliers have been seeing that they do not | :17:11. | :17:15.
have rabbits. And neighbours close by have got a very good rabbit | :17:16. | :17:18.
population. The only way to find out whether it | :17:19. | :17:35.
is taking a march through your part of the country is to actually count | :17:36. | :17:37.
And that is where you can help. them. | :17:38. | :17:45.
I am meeting David Wembridge, from the People's Trust | :17:46. | :17:47.
for Endangered Species (PTES), on a quiet road in Cambridgeshire. | :17:48. | :17:49.
Mammals on Roads survey. for the charity's annual | :17:50. | :17:52.
Tell me all about the Mammels on Roads survey? | :17:53. | :17:54.
It is a survey we have been running a few years now and we are asking | :17:55. | :17:58.
to record the wildlife they see. the usual ones they go on, | :17:59. | :18:03.
I do not want drivers doing it! in the survey, how easy is it | :18:04. | :18:12.
And then, simply, with a smart phone, you can download an app. | :18:13. | :18:15.
You can set the app running at the start of the journey | :18:16. | :18:18.
and that will show you a map of where you are driving along. | :18:19. | :18:21.
you press "I've Seen Something". and when you have seen something, | :18:22. | :18:25.
Press Rabbit. grid of all these different animals. | :18:26. | :18:30.
It will ask exactly what you saw and you can confirm that. | :18:31. | :18:33.
by one-third since 2007. rabbit numbers have decreased | :18:34. | :18:39.
But more data is needed to confirm this trend. | :18:40. | :18:41.
And as far as citizen science is concerned, | :18:42. | :18:43.
They are essential. comes to conservation? | :18:44. | :18:46.
So, let's have a go. amount of conservation. | :18:47. | :18:51.
It is both safer and easier to spot rabbits when travelling on single | :18:52. | :18:54.
carriageways or B roads, such as this. | :18:55. | :18:56.
Sadly, on this short drive, there are no rabbits to be seen. | :18:57. | :19:00.
For those looking out for rabbits on foot, however, | :19:01. | :19:02.
a pet bunny at home. particularly if you have | :19:03. | :19:07.
virus on their shoes. then they could be carrying that | :19:08. | :19:14.
So, do not go near your pet rabbit with the same footwear on. | :19:15. | :19:17.
Wear different shoes or disinfect your shoes. | :19:18. | :19:22.
from contracting the RHD2 virus. to protect domestic rabbits | :19:23. | :19:26.
If you plan to vaccinate, it is best to contact your vet | :19:27. | :19:29.
and ask if they have the vaccine or if they will be ordering supplies. | :19:30. | :19:32.
populations do bounce back. and, fortunately, rabbit | :19:33. | :19:35.
it may be contained. the spread of the RHD2 virus, | :19:36. | :19:39.
can be stopped or not. to know if this new disease | :19:40. | :19:45.
to blow away the cobwebs. the beach is great place to come | :19:46. | :19:50.
And there is loads of our coast to explore. | :19:51. | :19:52.
But it does not just end at the shoreline. | :19:53. | :19:54.
There is a whole other world beneath the waves and discovering it for | :19:55. | :19:57.
yourself is easier than you might think. | :19:58. | :20:04.
It was the Victorians who made the seaside trendy. | :20:05. | :20:06.
It was THE place to holiday. that led them to the beaches, | :20:07. | :20:16.
Of course, when you come to the beach in the 21st century, | :20:17. | :20:19.
were paddling in the sea. here from when the Victorians | :20:20. | :20:23.
that used to be a public loo. on the Norfolk coast, | :20:24. | :20:27.
Now it is a very nice house, with a pretty good view. | :20:28. | :20:34.
In fact, the legacy of the Victorians shaping | :20:35. | :20:36.
the look of Sheringham is still very obvious today. | :20:37. | :20:40.
But there is one thing the Victorians left behind | :20:41. | :20:45.
that is a very unlikely by-product of their legacy. | :20:46. | :20:47.
It is something that is getting people excited. | :20:48. | :20:49.
Well, it is a sewage pipe. to explore our coast. | :20:50. | :20:58.
Yeah, a disused Victorian sewage pipe. | :20:59. | :21:00.
And we are going to show you just what is down there. | :21:01. | :21:05.
Rob Spray and Dawn Watson are no strangers to what lies | :21:06. | :21:07.
beneath the North Sea, off our coastline. | :21:08. | :21:10.
Cromer to the world's attention. and brought the chalk reef off | :21:11. | :21:23.
Norfolk's beautiful and it just keeps on going. | :21:24. | :21:24.
What we thought here is, it is all very well saying, | :21:25. | :21:27.
come and dive with our fancy gear, but you do not need all that. | :21:28. | :21:31.
You can do it with a mask and a snorkel. | :21:32. | :21:33.
You can find out that Norfolk's beaches are just the start of that | :21:34. | :21:36.
whole reef area we have talked about so much and it is nice to give | :21:37. | :21:41.
normal people a chance to visit and see what it is all about and see | :21:42. | :21:45.
You would not believe how colourful there, at the end of the groynes. | :21:46. | :21:52.
You would not believe how colourful letters. There are hundreds of | :21:53. | :21:58.
those. God, yes! | :21:59. | :22:02.
you first saw it? You would not think that this old | :22:03. | :22:06.
pipe would have so much life on it! Today, Rob and Dawn are going to be | :22:07. | :22:24.
diving on the sewage pipe again, but this time, they are | :22:25. | :22:28.
with a team of divers. to see what is down there. | :22:29. | :22:30.
is not just a jolly, To make it safe for you and me. | :22:31. | :22:34.
doing a safety survey. They want to make this the first | :22:35. | :22:38.
snorkel trail in the North sea. I was just saying to the guys, | :22:39. | :22:42.
we will head for that pipe and we will guide them | :22:43. | :22:45.
to the centre of it. To try to find the end | :22:46. | :22:47.
is like trying to thread a needle. Meanwhile, while | :22:48. | :23:00.
they are down there, up on the land, I am meeting | :23:01. | :23:01.
Hilary Cox from the local council. I think what is good | :23:02. | :23:04.
about a snorkel trail is, the majority of people can snorkel. | :23:05. | :23:07.
not everybody can dive, but You just have to have your | :23:08. | :23:11.
mask on and look down. It is unique. | :23:12. | :23:14.
wonderful down there? I will be. | :23:15. | :23:19.
on the new snorkel trail? an example and do it. | :23:20. | :23:22.
something, I think you should set There is a snorkel trail | :23:23. | :23:26.
in the South West, which has proved very popular, but this would be | :23:27. | :23:29.
the first on our coast. Pretty good. | :23:30. | :23:32.
at the new snorkel trail. It is only early in the season yet, | :23:33. | :23:37.
but we can see three, four metres. Can easily see the pipe | :23:38. | :23:41.
is still there. There is a few sharp | :23:42. | :23:43.
pins, that we will cap. We will come back and do | :23:44. | :23:45.
that and there is plenty That is the thing. | :23:46. | :23:48.
so people can find it. Anybody who can swim, | :23:49. | :23:52.
can snorkel this trail. It is ever so shallow to start | :23:53. | :23:53.
with - barely three-feet deep. and want to be a bit more ambitious. | :23:54. | :23:56.
if you are training up And you will see all | :23:57. | :24:01.
of the famous wildlife, crabs, the lobsters - | :24:02. | :24:03.
lots of fish. It is a lovely thing that is just | :24:04. | :24:04.
here, on the edge of the beach. After weeks of waiting, | :24:05. | :24:08.
it is my turn. And Rob, who is filming us | :24:09. | :24:18.
underwater, and Dawn, try out the snorkel trail, as well. | :24:19. | :24:20.
have invited some friends along to new snorkel trail for myself. | :24:21. | :24:24.
to get in and see this Let's go. | :24:25. | :24:28.
are going to be able to do. seeing it for myself is wonderful. | :24:29. | :24:38.
some of what they have filmed, You actually see the | :24:39. | :24:52.
outline of the pipe. You would not think that | :24:53. | :24:59.
you could see it, considering how You can be strong currents around | :25:00. | :25:02.
but as you get down, You can be strong currents around | :25:03. | :25:20.
You would not believe it. not a good swimmer. | :25:21. | :25:28.
down and see so clearly. coast, to be able to go | :25:29. | :25:32.
And there is some lovely colours down there. | :25:33. | :25:34.
You want to go on forever. the pipe and you want to go | :25:35. | :25:39.
It is just incredible that it is here. | :25:40. | :25:49.
