Hello, and welcome to Inside Out for 2013. I was thinking in my head, | :00:04. | :00:14.
| :00:14. | :00:15. | ||
We add up the cost of one of Newcastle United's latest signings. | :00:15. | :00:19.
I knew I couldn't pay it back but I never thought I was going to get it, | :00:19. | :00:23.
and I was gobsmacked that I got it. We trace the roots of one of this | :00:23. | :00:27.
region's forgotten athletic greats. It just feels so proud and I am | :00:27. | :00:35.
thankful that at last his story has been able to be told. And capping | :00:35. | :00:41.
of 2012, a year in the life of our very own 100 club. I fell in love. | :00:41. | :00:45.
I bought a house. But now I am skint. We tried to keep the memory | :00:45. | :00:50.
of stillborn child alive. Life is too short. Just live it. | :00:50. | :00:53.
Stories from the heart of the north-east and Cumbria. This is | :00:53. | :01:03.
| :01:03. | :01:17. | ||
After a Merry Christmas comes the hangover, and perhaps you paid for | :01:17. | :01:19.
it using high interest short-term credit. From a payday loan company | :01:19. | :01:23.
like Wonga. Now, but Wonga logo will soon be emblazoned across T- | :01:23. | :01:25.
shirts of Newcastle United. It's controversial, because the company | :01:25. | :01:29.
says it is offering a bright new alternative to the banks, but its | :01:29. | :01:39.
| :01:39. | :01:39. | ||
critics say it is nothing more than a legal loan shark. | :01:39. | :01:46.
They're a good company and they are looking to improve the club. | :01:46. | :01:50.
Newcastle's a fantastic club. It's one of the iconic clubs of English | :01:50. | :01:57.
football. It's a massive coup for Wonga. The deal with Newcastle | :01:57. | :02:00.
United will launch the Wonga name around the world. Many Newcastle | :02:00. | :02:03.
fans will not be concerned about what name is on the front of the | :02:03. | :02:07.
team shirt, just as long as they are winning on the pitch, but for | :02:07. | :02:09.
others, it is simply not acceptable that Newcastle's multi-million pan | :02:09. | :02:12.
players will be earning money wearing a shirt making a product | :02:12. | :02:19.
which it is claimed exploits the vulnerable poor. You do it out of | :02:19. | :02:22.
desperation when you need it, and once the money has gone, that is | :02:22. | :02:26.
when the trouble starts. The growth of Wonga is phenomenal. He did not | :02:26. | :02:29.
even exist six years ago, yet now it is able to splash out millions | :02:30. | :02:32.
sponsoring one of the biggest football clubs in the richest | :02:32. | :02:38.
league in the world. Our goal is to reinvent credit for the 21st | :02:38. | :02:41.
century and that means being transparent about the real cost of | :02:41. | :02:46.
borrowing money, being upfront about that cost. No forms, no fuss, | :02:46. | :02:50.
no meetings with the bank manager. Money in your account in 15 minutes. | :02:51. | :02:57.
Easy, and if you are skint, oh, so tempting. To borrow 150, with the | :02:57. | :03:03.
interest, I would be charged 51.51. Which would be a total repayment of | :03:03. | :03:08.
201.51. Stacey from Middlesborough says she borrowed a title of 400 | :03:08. | :03:14.
in three loans from Wonga. I was vulnerable. I had separated from | :03:14. | :03:22.
the partner I was with. I wanted to just get away from all the stuff | :03:22. | :03:26.
that was going on in my head, and the easy thing for me was get a | :03:26. | :03:29.
loan, go shopping. Get some clothes, treat myself. But Stacey could not | :03:29. | :03:33.
pay the loan back on time, and her problems started. Wonga tried to | :03:33. | :03:37.
phone and I just ignored the phone, didn't answer none of it. And | :03:37. | :03:47.
| :03:47. | :03:48. | ||
because of that, it went up from 400 to 788.24. Wonga froze her | :03:48. | :03:51.
debt and two years on, she is paying it back at just over 8 | :03:51. | :03:56.
month. Stacey is one of more than one million people in the UK to | :03:56. | :04:00.
have used Wonga, that is one in 60 of us. So what is it that appeals | :04:00. | :04:03.
to people about payday loans and Wonga? Well, the first thing it | :04:03. | :04:13.
| :04:13. | :04:13. | ||
does is it gives them access to many that the banks won't give them. | :04:13. | :04:18.
-- money. If people still have needs for things like to repair a | :04:18. | :04:20.
car, they need that money relatively quickly, and longer | :04:20. | :04:23.
provides that. The mainstream banks do not. Wonga is competing in a | :04:23. | :04:26.
crowded market place, up to 240 companies out there offering quick | :04:26. | :04:29.
loans, not all of them on the high street. And they are targeting a | :04:29. | :04:32.
new type of customer. Internet borrowers tend to be much younger. | :04:32. | :04:35.
According to Wonga, almost 70 percent are under the age of 35. | :04:35. | :04:38.
Most are single and two thirds do not have children. And it is | :04:38. | :04:41.
growing at a remarkable speed. More than five million British adults | :04:41. | :04:44.
are considering taking out a payday loan in the next six months. This | :04:44. | :04:50.
includes one in four of all under 25s in this country. Wonga says it | :04:50. | :05:00.
| :05:00. | :05:00. | ||
is going for a generation of people used to getting things fast. We're | :05:00. | :05:03.
there for people who, by and large, have options, credit cards, bank | :05:03. | :05:07.
accounts. You must have a bank account to receive a Wonga loan. | :05:07. | :05:10.
And they are telling us in their droves that they are rejecting the | :05:10. | :05:13.
overdraft model of the banks. They're choosing to use Wonga over | :05:13. | :05:16.
some of these traditional longer- term commitments like credit cards. | :05:16. | :05:21.
Sliders. That's how we roll here. You tell us how much you want, how | :05:21. | :05:26.
long you want it for, and we tell you how much it is going to cost. | :05:27. | :05:29.
They've spent heavily on a TV campaign, largely using daytime TV | :05:29. | :05:31.
slots, which also raises interesting questions about the | :05:31. | :05:34.
target market, because if they claim to be targeting those in | :05:34. | :05:36.
employment, daytime TV would not necessarily capture those people. | :05:36. | :05:39.
But they have certainly invested heavily, they have adopted their | :05:39. | :05:43.
grannies campaign. The message behind that is, if someone elderly | :05:43. | :05:46.
can understand the technology and the terms and conditions, then | :05:46. | :05:51.
therefore anyone can. The clever marketing is paying off. In 2011, | :05:51. | :05:54.
Wonga's profits went through the roof, up almost 270 percent on the | :05:54. | :05:59.
previous year. That's despite charging a notional annual interest | :05:59. | :06:08.
rate of more than 4,000 percent. Or, to put it Wonga's way, 1% a day. | :06:08. | :06:11.
The APR alarms a lot of people but it is unrelated entirely to the | :06:11. | :06:19.
actual cost of the service. We charge 1% interest per day. The | :06:19. | :06:22.
average loan is actually about 16 days, so you are looking at about | :06:22. | :06:27.
16 percent of interest, or 1.60 per 100 borrowed. But for some, | :06:27. | :06:31.
however you break it down, Wonga's words just will not wash. | :06:31. | :06:34.
Wonga.com - straight-talking money. With companies like Wonga, they're | :06:35. | :06:39.
signing up to 4000% APR which is a huge amount og money. People who | :06:39. | :06:42.
are in financial difficulty will always struggle to pay that back | :06:42. | :06:46.
and will get themselves into a real mess with it. Unlike most other | :06:46. | :06:50.
countries, we do not cap what these companies can charge, so that even | :06:50. | :06:53.
if people manage to pay off their Wonga loan, they might well be | :06:53. | :06:56.
taking out another loan to pay off That. And people get stuck in a | :06:56. | :06:59.
cycle where they are borrowing to pay off borrowing and actually not | :06:59. | :07:03.
being able to pay the basics that they need to do. Pamela Smith | :07:03. | :07:06.
applied for a Wonga loan to pay for car repairs, knowing she had a poor | :07:06. | :07:09.
credit rating. I am totally blacklisted. I cannot get... I | :07:09. | :07:13.
can't even get gas meters changed from token meters to credit meters. | :07:13. | :07:18.
That's how bad my credit is, because of my history. To go on | :07:18. | :07:22.
there and get a loan and have it in the bank within... It was about six | :07:22. | :07:26.
or seven minutes. The money was in the bank. Oh, easily. And I was | :07:26. | :07:30.
gobsmacked that I got it, and I was thinking in my head, I put in for | :07:30. | :07:33.
300, knowing I couldn't pay it back, but I never thought I was going to | :07:33. | :07:38.
get it. I got a loan with Wonga a couple of months ago. It was my | :07:38. | :07:42.
daughter's birthday, I had nothing. I must know at least 20 or 30 | :07:42. | :07:47.
people of my estate who have had a Wonga loan. And a lot of us are not | :07:47. | :07:51.
working at the minute. You know, struggling. We do not always get it | :07:51. | :07:57.
right. Our aim is to get it right as much as possible, and if someone | :07:57. | :08:00.
has got genuine problems, and we try and help them. Shirt | :08:00. | :08:02.
sponsorship at Newcastle United began in the 1980s. Typically, up | :08:02. | :08:12.
| :08:12. | :08:16. | ||
to now, the Browns have had strong local ties. -- brands. But Wonga is | :08:16. | :08:21.
different. It's no North East connection at all. It employs not a | :08:21. | :08:24.
single person in the region. In fact, its headquarters are here in | :08:24. | :08:27.
London, just around the corner from London Zoo. Wonga has evolved into | :08:27. | :08:30.
one of the big beasts of personal finance. It's worth hundreds of | :08:30. | :08:33.
millions of pounds. Wonga is moving into a region with high numbers of | :08:33. | :08:42.
people experiencing financial difficulty. The Citizens Advice | :08:42. | :08:45.
Bureau here in Newcastle is helping hundreds who are deep in debt. | :08:45. | :08:48.
probably see about 15,000 debt problems year. This year, we reckon | :08:48. | :08:51.
we are dealing with 20 million worth of debt and a lot of that | :08:51. | :08:54.
will be payday loans. Government figures show the north-east has a | :08:54. | :08:57.
higher personal bankruptcy rate in any other region in the country. 26 | :08:57. | :09:00.
percent struggle financially to make it to payday. Wonga says the | :09:00. | :09:03.
deal with Newcastle United is not about winning more customers in an | :09:03. | :09:06.
area with high levels of deprivation. If we wanted to target | :09:06. | :09:09.
people specifically in the North East, there is a lot cheaper ways | :09:09. | :09:12.
to do that. This is not about selling loans to anyone. Newcastle | :09:12. | :09:15.
are part of the Premier League, which is the most viewed football | :09:15. | :09:18.
league in the world, so it gives them access not only to a local | :09:18. | :09:21.
audience but then a national one and therefore an international one | :09:21. | :09:24.
as well and if they truly have global ambitions in the future, the | :09:24. | :09:28.
fact that their name will be on show at over in East Asia by next | :09:28. | :09:31.
year, it's them a very good head start. And Wonga needs to develop | :09:31. | :09:34.
new markets, because the payday loan gravy train in the UK may be | :09:34. | :09:43.
about to come to a grinding halt. And it is due in part to pressure | :09:44. | :09:46.
in the House of Lords from this region's greatest Paralympian. | :09:46. | :09:49.
wanted to put my name to an amendment to restrict what they | :09:49. | :09:53.
were able to do, because they are making huge amounts of money out of | :09:53. | :09:56.
people who really cannot afford it. There's a lot of talk in some | :09:56. | :09:59.
European countries about an upper On what loan interest rates could | :09:59. | :10:01.
be. If that was ever to be contemplated here, wouldn't that | :10:02. | :10:04.
through your wholethis list model out the window? That's a very hard | :10:05. | :10:08.
question to answer, because no one has defined what a Might look like | :10:08. | :10:16.
or who it would affect. -- would and nut throwing your whole | :10:16. | :10:23.
business model out of the window? No one knows what a cap might look | :10:23. | :10:27.
like. What we are all four is better regulation of the sector, | :10:27. | :10:30.
and better practices across credit and financing general. I do not | :10:30. | :10:34.
think this is the End of the payday loan industry. I want them to | :10:34. | :10:37.
operate in the way in which they do in other countries, where actually | :10:37. | :10:41.
they do not cause these kind of problems, but in order for that to | :10:41. | :10:44.
happen, we need to What these companies can charge. The amendment | :10:44. | :10:46.
we've got through the Financial Services Bill will certainly help | :10:46. | :10:49.
with that. I concern is obviously that is a power for the new | :10:49. | :10:52.
regulator to use. It's not a definite that it is actually going | :10:52. | :10:56.
to happen, and that power will not come into play until 2014, so I am | :10:56. | :11:00.
now campaigning to make sure we get these caps in place a lot earlier. | :11:00. | :11:03.
Wonga says it is beating the banks because it provides a fast, high- | :11:03. | :11:05.
tech service not previously available. For some, it is the | :11:05. | :11:09.
wrong rant in the wrong city. But Wonga is here to stay, despite the | :11:09. | :11:11.
recession. Growing fast thanks to our continuing love affair with | :11:11. | :11:14.
credit. If you have taken out a payday loan, | :11:14. | :11:17.
it would be great to hear how you got on. You can share your | :11:17. | :11:20.
experience by leaving a comment on my blog. Just go to | :11:20. | :11:26.
bbc.co.uk/chrisjackson. He was one of the greatest ever | :11:26. | :11:31.
British athletes, Arthur Wharton. He was the first ever professional | :11:31. | :11:37.
black footballer. He was the world record holder at 100 yards. His was | :11:37. | :11:41.
an illustrious career that history has all but air rushed it out, | :11:41. | :11:49.
until now. It starts in a little fishing port | :11:49. | :11:56.
in West Africa, in 1865. A boy is born. He became arguably the | :11:56. | :12:01.
greatest sportsmen northern England has ever seen, but you have | :12:01. | :12:06.
probably never heard of him. I just feel so proud of his achievements, | :12:06. | :12:14.
and so thankful that last his story has been able to be told. He was | :12:14. | :12:18.
the pioneer. He is a part of history. We all start somewhere, | :12:18. | :12:24.
and we start with Arthur Wharton. This is what began the whole story. | :12:24. | :12:30.
I found it in this old box that belonged to my mother. It is a | :12:30. | :12:34.
photo of Arthur Wharton, who sheila Leeson believed to be a distant | :12:34. | :12:40.
relative. She did not know it but he had a remarkable story. He was | :12:40. | :12:44.
born in James Cant on the Gold Coast, now gone. His Scottish | :12:44. | :12:49.
father was a Methodist preacher and his Ghanaian mother a troubled | :12:49. | :12:54.
Princess. Arthur left for Britain to train as a preacher himself but | :12:54. | :13:04.
| :13:04. | :13:07. | ||
he found his true calling in the Darlington is central to the story. | :13:07. | :13:14.
It is where Arthur made his name. He played football for Darlington. | :13:14. | :13:19.
He was a first class cricket to put an even better goalkeeper. He was a | :13:19. | :13:24.
show man. He would swing on the crossbar and catch the ball between | :13:24. | :13:31.
his knees. He also played for Middlesbrough, Rotherham... He was | :13:31. | :13:36.
playing so well at Preston sign him. They were the Barcelona of their | :13:36. | :13:43.
day. But that is just the tip of the iceberg. The world's first | :13:43. | :13:48.
black professional footballer. British Cycling -- cycling champion, | :13:48. | :13:53.
cricketer and rugby player. If we look at his sporting achievements | :13:53. | :13:58.
in the context of the day, it would be like Usain Bolt turning up for | :13:58. | :14:03.
what Manchester United on Saturday. If he was doing that, we were | :14:03. | :14:08.
thinking the greatest athlete as ever lived. So why hasn't everyone | :14:08. | :14:14.
heard of him? The reason is because he had a scandalous family secret. | :14:14. | :14:24.
This is my mother. Also in the box was a picture of Arthur's sisters. | :14:24. | :14:31.
This is after's father. Reverend Henry Wharton. Offer was married to | :14:31. | :14:39.
the sister of Sheila's grandmother. The photo is of entire African | :14:39. | :14:46.
family and a box of his personal belongings point to a closer link. | :14:46. | :14:54.
In the box was his idol. I found these verses underlined. A thorn in | :14:54. | :15:03.
the flesh. The messenger of Satan. For this thing I besought the Lord | :15:03. | :15:10.
thrice. I think he's trying to tell me that he committed adultery. He | :15:10. | :15:14.
had been with my grandmother three times and she had three children. | :15:14. | :15:19.
It made it Shelagh realise why her grandmother was banished from the | :15:19. | :15:23.
family. Because Arthur Wharton was actually the grandfather she never | :15:23. | :15:28.
knew. Sheila is heading from her home in Yorkshire to Ghana. It is | :15:28. | :15:35.
the last chance she will ever get to trace her family roots. It feels | :15:35. | :15:45.
| :15:45. | :15:50. | ||
fantastic. I never thought I would be here. It says Reverend Henry | :15:50. | :15:54.
Wharton Memorial Methodist Church. This is where Arthur's father, | :15:54. | :16:03.
Henry Wharton, preached. Arthur, I think, in his later life, forgot | :16:03. | :16:08.
about his religion. Because of his love affair, Arthur lost his family | :16:08. | :16:13.
and then his celebrity status. He ended up as a miner near Doncaster, | :16:13. | :16:18.
living in poverty. He had gone from being somebody well known and faded | :16:18. | :16:26.
in the country to practically being a nobody, and he was buried in an | :16:26. | :16:31.
unknown graves. An undignified end for a champion whose life had | :16:31. | :16:41.
| :16:41. | :16:42. | ||
started so promisingly. This is the school that he attended. He was the | :16:42. | :16:50.
first man to run 100 yards in ten seconds. He was also the first | :16:50. | :16:54.
black professional footballer in England and therefore in the world. | :16:54. | :16:59.
But hardly any of the current pupils have heard of an illustrious | :16:59. | :17:05.
performer one. The discovery of Arthur Wharton as an old boy is so | :17:05. | :17:10.
wonderful. We would like to emulate him, followed in his footsteps. It | :17:10. | :17:16.
makes me feel proud of my school, of gone and Africa. Shaun | :17:16. | :17:22.
Campbell's mission was to get recognition for Arthur Wharton, too. | :17:22. | :17:28.
First through a statue. When I first decided to run a campaign, I | :17:28. | :17:32.
wondered how many statues there were two black British achievers | :17:32. | :17:37.
out there. It took two-and-a-half months to find one. He will | :17:37. | :17:42.
eventually unveiled a 17 ft high a statue. Until then, he's small | :17:42. | :17:47.
replicas have been bought by football's most powerful | :17:47. | :17:54.
organisations. We have won at Wembley Stadium, one at FIFA or. | :17:54. | :18:01.
England and UEFA. We can go through lists of footballers. David Beckham, | :18:01. | :18:06.
George Best, Bobby Moore... The any footballer with a statue in the | :18:07. | :18:12.
highest places of world football is Arthur Wharton. The statue is only | :18:12. | :18:16.
one part of it. The rest is about spreading the word. He has the ear | :18:16. | :18:21.
of the British High Commission. He has the ear of local dignitaries. | :18:21. | :18:26.
And he has even blacked his way onto national television. Ghana has | :18:26. | :18:30.
perhaps the most iconic sportsmen in the history of the world. | :18:30. | :18:36.
the timing of the campaign could not be better. In Europe now, where | :18:36. | :18:41.
there are wars being waged against racism in football, someone like | :18:41. | :18:46.
Arthur Wharton could be the symbol of overcoming racism. There are | :18:46. | :18:50.
some was loved by many across the north, he had to fight his own | :18:50. | :18:55.
battle. When they reported on matches, for example, they would | :18:55. | :19:02.
refer to him as the dark one or say that he had a monkey type features. | :19:02. | :19:07.
In 1886, the people of the North East of England called for Arthur | :19:07. | :19:11.
to play for England. He was denied the opportunity because of the | :19:11. | :19:16.
colour of his skin and nearly 100 years later... | :19:16. | :19:22.
Being a black player, a goalkeeper, playing in the 1800s, that is mind | :19:22. | :19:27.
boggling. I did not know anything about Arthur Wharton until six or | :19:27. | :19:33.
seven years ago, which is a crying shame. Now, if you speak to Rio | :19:33. | :19:36.
Ferdinand, Ashley Cole, and they all know about him. We are doing | :19:36. | :19:42.
our bit to get his name up there. They are doing exactly that out in | :19:42. | :19:47.
Ghana, too. It is Arthur Wharton's birthday, and in the place where he | :19:47. | :19:53.
was born, a football tournament held in his honour. | :19:53. | :20:02.
This is a deprived community. A gentleman such as Arthur brings | :20:02. | :20:06.
hope that despite adversity and obstacles, one can make it through | :20:06. | :20:11.
and reach for the top. Football is in their blood and then to know | :20:11. | :20:15.
that the world's first black footballer actually came from Ghana, | :20:15. | :20:22.
it makes them think, I knew it anyway! Arthur Wharton has finally | :20:22. | :20:28.
come home. And in a sense, so has his granddaughter. She now has one | :20:28. | :20:33.
last surprise. Local journalist Ernest has been doing some digging | :20:33. | :20:39.
into the African side of her family. What we have now is a lot from your | :20:39. | :20:44.
great-grandmother's site. He has tracked down not just one or two | :20:44. | :20:51.
relatives but an entire family she let never knew she had. | :20:51. | :21:01.
| :21:01. | :21:01. | ||
APPLAUSE. Here is your family assembled. My work is done. I have | :21:01. | :21:07.
realised, as a child I had always said to my mother, have I got a | :21:07. | :21:16.
grandfather? And she never answer any. I am very proud to be a member | :21:17. | :21:24.
of your family. I just feel very emotional. It is very emotional to | :21:24. | :21:32.
be here with you all. And thank you. We are very happy because this is | :21:33. | :21:36.
the first time I have heard of white people tracing their black | :21:37. | :21:41.
ancestors. She has come over to look for us. Football is known as | :21:41. | :21:46.
the beautiful game and it unites people. Look at what is happening | :21:46. | :21:51.
here today. We are all united, people from all over the world | :21:51. | :21:56.
coming together, or because of one man and his journey. It is a | :21:57. | :22:02.
culmination in my life. It is the most greatest day of my life. I | :22:02. | :22:06.
just could not understand why it had been hidden away all those | :22:06. | :22:11.
years. I think my mother would say, I am sorry I did not tell you what | :22:11. | :22:17.
was happening, but I am pleased that you have found him. She would | :22:17. | :22:25.
probably be saying, up there, well done, Sheila. | :22:25. | :22:32.
The now a treat. 2012 was an amazing year. With the Jubilee, the | :22:32. | :22:37.
Olympics, the Paralympics, but just as important to our individual | :22:37. | :22:41.
events in family life. So the BBC here invited 100 people born | :22:41. | :22:46.
between 1912 and 2012 to share their highs and lows of a momentous | :22:46. | :22:52.
year. The film first premiered on assistant programme Look North with | :22:52. | :22:57.
specially composed music. We liked it so much we thought you would | :22:57. | :23:07.

gone by. My partner change my life. I got first-class honours. I won. | :24:29. | :24:32.
I found love but then I lost love. I volunteered. My niece beat the | :24:32. | :24:39.
odds. A year of highs and lows. turned 30. With my mates. A baby in | :24:39. | :24:43.
February. And another on the way. had a baby after four years of | :24:43. | :24:49.
trying. I am in remission. Living life without love ones. My daughter | :24:49. | :24:52.
learned to talk. I got my British citizenship. I received a British | :24:52. | :25:01.
Empire medal. I took the risk. I fell in love. | :25:01. | :25:05.
I bought a house. And now I'm skint. We tried to keep the memory of our | :25:05. | :25:15.
stillborn child alive. Life is too short. Just leave it. -- just live | :25:15. | :25:20.
it. I ran the coast-to-coast in 27 hours. Struggling to find a job. | :25:20. | :25:23.
kids left home. I took my parents on a cruise. I retired from the | :25:23. | :25:25.
police and resumed making Cumberland sausage. I had breast | :25:25. | :25:29.

another year's gone by. I waded through floodwater. The weather has | :25:52. | :25:56.
affected my livelihood. I met my soulmate. I tried exciting | :25:56. | :26:00.
new things. I sailed the South China Sea. Not an athlete, but two | :26:00. | :26:04.
stones lighter. It's been a bittersweet year. Our house went up | :26:04. | :26:09.
in flames. I became a grandmother. I received an unwanted diagnosis. | :26:09. | :26:12.
This year marks the start of something new. I climbed | :26:12. | :26:22.

Kilimanjaro. # And the seasons turn. And the memories burn. Faces of | :26:30. | :26:39.
