It is a holiday rip off, be on mines down that route hundreds. | :00:06. | :00:14.
Complete devastation. Humiliating as well. | :00:14. | :00:20.
Texting, sending tweets, and even surfing the net, while you are | :00:20. | :00:25.
driving? Driving while using a smart phone is more distracting | :00:25. | :00:29.
than being over the legal limit for drink-driving. It is even more | :00:29. | :00:36.
distracting than been under the influence of cannabis. | :00:36. | :00:40.
And we meet the leaders of the future being trained right here in | :00:40. | :00:50.
:00:50. | :00:54. | ||
Kent. I have come here at... I am Natalie Graham at with untold | :00:54. | :00:59.
stories closer to home. From all around the south and the south-east, | :00:59. | :01:09.
:01:09. | :01:20. | ||
Tonight, we are in one of Kent's most picturesque villages. We are | :01:20. | :01:25.
back later, but first, thinking about your holidays yet? If so, | :01:25. | :01:30.
watch out. At this time of year, lots of us | :01:30. | :01:35.
are thinking about our holidays. Traditionally, we would be booking | :01:35. | :01:39.
in places like this, but statistics show that more than half of us are | :01:39. | :01:44.
breeding it and booking our own holidays on mine now. And why not? | :01:44. | :01:51.
Look at this villa with stunning views and a private pool. It sounds | :01:51. | :01:56.
like the perfect holiday so what could possibly go wrong? | :01:56. | :02:01.
Decided to have a look at villas on the internet. Surged through a | :02:01. | :02:05.
couple of websites, trying to find one's which were unsuitable for | :02:05. | :02:10.
three families. Unfortunately, duly fell in love with that dream villa. | :02:10. | :02:16.
A I contacted the owner who then contacted me and said -- gave me | :02:16. | :02:24.
the cost of the villa, which was around 5,700. The evil That was | :02:24. | :02:28.
owned by a couple who were not travel agents, but they definitely | :02:28. | :02:34.
have the knack for getting bookings. Uncertain weeks, they had up to 10 | :02:34. | :02:40.
parties booked into the they were so it wasn't just a case of making | :02:40. | :02:45.
2,750 a week. In August in one week, you can times that by 10. | :02:45. | :02:50.
The couple seemed perfectly hospitable and reassuring. They | :02:50. | :02:55.
would answer any questions about the villa by phone and e-mail, but | :02:55. | :02:59.
once they were paid, that service stopped. I transferred money from | :02:59. | :03:04.
my bank account to the owner's bank account. I heard nothing at all. I | :03:04. | :03:09.
sent another e-mail and I actually said that I was getting worried | :03:10. | :03:14.
because she had not responded and it had been maybe a week since I | :03:14. | :03:18.
had paid the balance and I have still got no response. Julie had | :03:18. | :03:24.
transferred money to an account at this bank in have on an, an account | :03:24. | :03:28.
police were already investigating on behalf of another holiday maker | :03:29. | :03:32.
he was having trouble contacting the couple. | :03:32. | :03:37.
They were over cupping the below to such a degree that at one point, 12 | :03:37. | :03:42.
holidays were shed job in for the same week. The property wasn't even | :03:42. | :03:46.
available. They were advertising be below for a holiday bookings, | :03:46. | :03:50.
knowing that there was a tenant in the Villa and it was unavailable | :03:50. | :03:55.
for hire. I had a phone call informing me | :03:55. | :04:01.
that the villa was under police investigation. I was informed that | :04:01. | :04:04.
their work may be another 16 families that were also reporting | :04:04. | :04:12.
the same thing. There were people from Norway, Switzerland, France, | :04:12. | :04:17.
all these people who had booked into this villa as well. There were | :04:17. | :04:22.
different age ranges, from young teenagers going on their first | :04:22. | :04:27.
group holiday with friends, a party from Sweden, and again a group of | :04:27. | :04:36.
female teenagers going away. One group actually went out and you can | :04:36. | :04:40.
imagine going away for the first time only to turn up at a villa | :04:40. | :04:44.
where it is no longer available. The police learned that the money | :04:44. | :04:50.
that Julie and others have paid into the bank account had long gone. | :04:50. | :04:55.
But the investigation team wasn't giving up. Although the account was | :04:55. | :04:59.
leaked to a bogus address, upon closer examination there was a | :04:59. | :05:08.
reference to a cottage in Dorset so the team headed west. | :05:08. | :05:13.
Colleagues and myself attended that address and spoke to the occupants | :05:13. | :05:19.
could turn out to be the parents of one of the offenders. But the | :05:19. | :05:23.
parents denied knowledge of the couple's whereabouts so the police | :05:23. | :05:31.
began to search the House for clues. White seized two diaries from the | :05:31. | :05:35.
cottage. I had a tug-of-war with Mrs Grant where she forcibly tried | :05:35. | :05:41.
to remove them from my hand. In one of the diaries at the back was an | :05:41. | :05:45.
address so we suspected that was where they were living at the time. | :05:45. | :05:49.
Meanwhile, Julie had to come to terms with her last holiday and | :05:49. | :05:52.
break the news to the other families who were travelling with | :05:52. | :05:57.
her that their money had gone. Complete devastation. I felt | :05:57. | :06:02.
responsible because I had booked this holiday on behalf of the other | :06:02. | :06:08.
parties. You feel that you have been taken for a ride. There was no | :06:08. | :06:12.
intention of letting us have the holiday. It is a hard lesson to | :06:12. | :06:15.
learn. The address the police found in the | :06:15. | :06:18.
diary lead them to a luxury farmhouse in Somerset from where | :06:18. | :06:25.
the couple were running their business. The game was up. They | :06:25. | :06:28.
must be really stupid people to think they can get away with such a | :06:28. | :06:34.
thing or, because in this day and a, a lot of things are traceable. They | :06:34. | :06:39.
were doing it through e-mail, bank account transfers, I don't know how | :06:39. | :06:43.
they thought they could get away with it. | :06:43. | :06:46.
The grants were arrested on suspicion of fraud. Having managed | :06:46. | :06:49.
to con hundreds of people out of their holidays, they were brought | :06:49. | :06:55.
to Guildford police station for questioning. | :06:55. | :06:59.
Whilst Darren and Tracey had plenty to say to potential customers and | :06:59. | :07:06.
the police, it was a different matter. You have a number of | :07:06. | :07:13.
outstanding debts. No comment. had tried to obtain money | :07:13. | :07:14.
fraudulently from these holidaymakers whilst knowing that | :07:15. | :07:20.
they would not be able to use the Villa's services. No comment. | :07:20. | :07:26.
and Mrs Grant maintained a not guilty plea until the trial. | :07:26. | :07:33.
What right did either of you have to mislead these people? No comment. | :07:33. | :07:38.
Mrs Grant was questioned for a number of hours and never gave one | :07:38. | :07:43.
answer to a single question. comment. She chose, as is her right, | :07:43. | :07:47.
to reply no comment to all of the questions. | :07:47. | :07:52.
In December at the Crown Court in Guildford at the 11th hour, the | :07:52. | :07:56.
couple had a change of heart. the last minute, they pleaded | :07:56. | :08:00.
guilty so the trial did not go ahead. I am glad they did not get | :08:00. | :08:05.
away with it in the end. They have been punished. | :08:05. | :08:10.
He stated he was responsible for sending those e-mails despite them | :08:10. | :08:17.
being in Tracy's name. Because of that, Mr Grant was sentenced to 27 | :08:17. | :08:22.
months imprisonment and Tracey Grant, his wife, was sentenced to | :08:22. | :08:26.
nine months imprisonment. To be honest, I think it was greed. They | :08:26. | :08:32.
were living far beyond their means. They had no means of employment at | :08:32. | :08:36.
the time, and their daughter was attended a private school. | :08:36. | :08:40.
While the couple are holidaying at Her Majesty's pleasure, it looks | :08:40. | :08:43.
like their victims were only ever see a fraction of their money back. | :08:44. | :08:49.
Meanwhile, there are lessons to be learnt. Safeguard yourself, it is | :08:49. | :08:55.
quite difficult in that environment, but there is insurance out there, | :08:55. | :08:58.
either through your bank account all through companies that | :08:59. | :09:03.
advertise that specifically cover fraud advertising. If this happens, | :09:03. | :09:12.
you are covered by an insurance company. Some of the victims | :09:12. | :09:16.
involved in this case did receive some of their money back. I am | :09:16. | :09:19.
still in shock that someone can still do that and to think they can | :09:19. | :09:25.
get away with it. I really would think twice about using private | :09:25. | :09:29.
rental again, although I have used it previous do this and everything | :09:29. | :09:39.
:09:39. | :09:49. | ||
has been OK. But I suppose it is a Coming up: The leaders of the | :09:49. | :09:57.
future been trained here in Kent. Is it tight enough? | :09:57. | :10:04.
Now, a dangerous game. Ms Thomas examines how texting, sending | :10:04. | :10:11.
tweeds and using Facebook at the wheel puts lives at risk. -- using | :10:11. | :10:21.
:10:21. | :10:23. | ||
They came on the scene and changed our lives forever. Mobiles have | :10:24. | :10:28.
come a long way since then, but could our need to be constantly | :10:28. | :10:32.
connected be to blame for more deaths on our roads? We have a | :10:32. | :10:35.
startling new evidence on how dangerous our love affair with | :10:35. | :10:43.
phones can be. Over the last four years, the | :10:43. | :10:49.
number of drivers getting caught in Kent have increased. -- number of | :10:49. | :10:55.
drivers using mobiles at the wheel had increased it. | :10:55. | :11:02.
The number has more than doubled in five years. Daniel knows the human | :11:03. | :11:07.
cost behind the statistics. He lost his brother Jordan because a driver | :11:07. | :11:12.
was using her phone at the wheel. He was only 19 years old, he had so | :11:12. | :11:17.
many friends, he was on the cusp of starting his adult life. He was a | :11:17. | :11:22.
very popular boy. Daniel's brother was on a bike at a | :11:22. | :11:25.
junction when he was hit by a driver who was sending a text | :11:25. | :11:30.
message. He died of head injuries. When we found out that it could | :11:30. | :11:37.
have been prevented, the accident, it's sort of took us to a new level | :11:37. | :11:44.
of emotion. We were obviously very upset about what had happened, but | :11:44. | :11:51.
then there was anger which took over and a real necessity to find | :11:51. | :11:57.
out what happened. We have filmed this reconstruction | :11:57. | :12:00.
in safe conditions on private roads at the Transport Research | :12:01. | :12:04.
Laboratory. But experts are becoming increasingly concerned | :12:05. | :12:10.
about the dangers that smart phones present. People are not as texting | :12:10. | :12:14.
all talking while driving, they are using Facebook, the internet and | :12:14. | :12:19.
Twitter. The rise of the smart phone it is making people take | :12:19. | :12:26.
stupid risks. This man is from the Institute of Advanced motorists. He | :12:26. | :12:30.
says one of the extra features on a smart phone increases the | :12:30. | :12:40.
:12:40. | :12:41. | ||
A lot of people are starting to use smartphones, in particular a lot of | :12:41. | :12:47.
young people. One in four have admitted that the regularly use a | :12:47. | :12:56.
smartphone to check e-mails and so on when they are driving. Officers | :12:56. | :12:59.
from the roads policing unit in Kent literally pick up the pieces | :12:59. | :13:04.
if there is a crash caused by a phone. Today we are being taken out | :13:04. | :13:11.
on patrol to spot drivers breaking the rules. Sometimes they will | :13:11. | :13:17.
swerve, or they will go through a traffic light. We go on have a look | :13:17. | :13:22.
and they are on their phones. We will ask them if they knew they had | :13:22. | :13:26.
gone through a red light and they will say, sorry, I wasn't | :13:26. | :13:34.
concentrating. If that person wasn't speaking on the phone, | :13:34. | :13:39.
someone would be alive. If that was a member of my family and would | :13:39. | :13:45.
find that very difficult to understand. We have only been in a | :13:46. | :13:50.
car for 10 minutes and have already spotted someone on their mobile. | :13:50. | :13:54.
Because of the amount of people killed on the roads, we need to | :13:54. | :14:03.
start hammering the message home. We can send due to courts. You can | :14:03. | :14:09.
have a conditional offer, a fixed penalty tickets. It is 60 and | :14:09. | :14:12.
three points. They man admits his guilt, that says he has only been | :14:12. | :14:20.
talking to his partner for a few minutes. Do you regret it? It is | :14:20. | :14:27.
against the law, so I have to say yes. Do you regret it or regret | :14:27. | :14:37.
:14:37. | :14:38. | ||
being caught? Yes, I regret both. Would it be a deterrent to stop you | :14:38. | :14:47.
doing it again? Honestly, if they need be, I will have to phone. But | :14:47. | :14:52.
it was urgent, I would pick up the phone, yes. They should have pulled | :14:52. | :14:57.
over, but there was nowhere to stop. So you would use it again, if you | :14:57. | :15:03.
were driving? Yes, if it was an emergency. If I'm being honest, | :15:03. | :15:10.
camel or no camera. That is a typical reaction, really. They are | :15:10. | :15:16.
so blase about the dangers. If they were to look at some of the | :15:16. | :15:23.
accidents they would have a different attitude. We stop three | :15:23. | :15:27.
more drivers. All have the same excuse, there are only on the phone | :15:27. | :15:32.
for a short time. According to the statistics they are four times more | :15:32. | :15:37.
likely to crash and twice as likely to miss at traffic signals. That | :15:37. | :15:42.
isn't the talking on the phone, but experts are wake -- are worried | :15:42. | :15:47.
about the smartphone as it is even more distracting. Little research | :15:47. | :15:52.
has been done into this, until now. This man is from the Transport | :15:52. | :15:57.
Research Laboratory and he is going to show me how to using a | :15:57. | :16:02.
smartphone affects our drive. is the driving simulator. Get in | :16:02. | :16:07.
and drive as if it was a normal car. We will ask you to do to drives, | :16:07. | :16:14.
one more you are a -- distracted by a variety of social network tasks, | :16:14. | :16:18.
and want then you are not distracted. We will compare those | :16:18. | :16:26.
two. What kind of things would you be looking for? How well you do in | :16:26. | :16:31.
traffic. Your reaction times and how well you can keep the car in | :16:31. | :16:39.
the middle of that thence. Agrees to the test without the smartphone, | :16:39. | :16:43.
seeing hazards in managing to keep the car on the road. You will | :16:43. | :16:48.
shortly encounter a vehicle in the inside lane. Police approached this | :16:48. | :16:53.
vehicle and follow it at a safe distance. It is quite easy to do 70 | :16:53. | :16:59.
miles an hour and not realise it. But soon it is time to drive | :16:59. | :17:03.
producing a smartphone. I will see exactly how distracting a greedy | :17:03. | :17:10.
gaze. Please send a private message from Facebook saying, don't worry, | :17:10. | :17:19.
have a nice time in Paris. I sway through the road and Miss Hazard | :17:19. | :17:29.
:17:29. | :17:40. | ||
Warning signs. Some pretty hairy I feel actually really stressed out | :17:40. | :17:45.
by that. I feel really hot. We didn't think it would be as bad as | :17:45. | :17:51.
that. That was pretty offensive! I don't think I dare ask. How do I | :17:51. | :17:55.
do? The when you were driving using the smartphone you were working | :17:56. | :17:59.
really hard just to stay on the road. Your position was drifting a | :18:00. | :18:04.
lot more. You were taking her eyes away from the road to look at the | :18:04. | :18:10.
phone and drifting before you could correct the steering. You missed | :18:10. | :18:15.
some of the reaction time hazards. We couldn't even recorder reaction | :18:15. | :18:21.
time because you have missed the hazards. Would it have made any | :18:21. | :18:28.
difference if I had done it hands- free? We have done work comparing | :18:28. | :18:31.
hands-free phone calls and we find the impairment to driving is about | :18:31. | :18:36.
the same, so hands-free and hand- held give a similar level of | :18:36. | :18:40.
impairment to driving. How serious do you think the risk is from | :18:40. | :18:47.
driving at the smartphone? I think the risk to a driver of using a | :18:47. | :18:51.
smart phone is huge. Taking your eyes off the road, having slower | :18:51. | :18:56.
reaction times and missing hazards or contribute to huge safety risk. | :18:56. | :19:00.
The Test side in here has been carried out on a larger scale and | :19:00. | :19:04.
it compared the effect of using a smartphone to other distractions | :19:04. | :19:09.
like drink-driving. We all know that drink-driving is bad. It is | :19:09. | :19:14.
socially and expect -- socially unacceptable. Driving while using a | :19:14. | :19:18.
smartphone is actually more distracting than being over the | :19:18. | :19:22.
legal limit for drink-driving. It is even more distracting than being | :19:22. | :19:28.
an to the influence of cannabis. It is that distracting. You messed | :19:28. | :19:33.
things, you don't react quickly enough and it is a recipe for | :19:33. | :19:37.
crashes to happen. Road safety experts say most reasonable people | :19:37. | :19:42.
would not drink and drive, but when it comes to using a smartphone, the | :19:42. | :19:47.
public perception needs to keep up with technology. We want the | :19:47. | :19:52.
mobile-phone providers, to social networking providers, the | :19:52. | :19:56.
Government, the industry, everybody to get together and start sending | :19:56. | :20:01.
out this message of how distracting it can be to use a mobile phone for | :20:01. | :20:11.
:20:11. | :20:23. | ||
Kids growing up in the inner cities miss out on so much that the | :20:23. | :20:28.
countryside has to offer, but a lucky few a couple of miles from | :20:28. | :20:32.
here are enjoying adventure, fresh- air and are being kept on the | :20:32. | :20:42.
:20:42. | :20:48. | ||
straight and narrow. These kids were probably normally | :20:48. | :20:52.
be kicking a ball against the wall of a tower block in London where | :20:52. | :20:58.
they live, but not today because they are at an outdoor learning | :20:58. | :21:02.
centre in Kent. It is here is that be bumping to a 12-year-old chap | :21:03. | :21:10.

taste of adventure throughout their teenage years and so help them | :21:45. | :21:49.
become leaders of the future. They decided it would be a good idea to | :21:49. | :21:59.

of experiences that often we take for granted. We have just done our | :22:33. | :22:37.
survival challenge and are getting ready for lunch. If you would like | :22:37. | :22:47.
:22:47. | :22:49. | ||
to film us at lunch, please do. The website is www. Inside Out .co.uk. | :22:49. | :22:55.
I think Israel is a lovely lad. That is the first time he has ever | :22:55. | :23:00.
been in that kind of context. He is engaged in this journey about what | :23:00. | :23:06.
this is all about, I venture, challenge and explore. How are you | :23:06. | :23:11.
getting on with everyone? Quite well, some not quite well, then | :23:11. | :23:18.
that is how things go. This is Darnell. Usually I find it hard to | :23:18. | :23:28.
:23:28. | :23:28. | ||
to be around other people. I will be leader. I have learnt that I can | :23:28. | :23:33.
be around other people without getting stressed-out and angry. | :23:33. | :23:38.
Folded up a little bit more so we can fit it in nicely. Do you often | :23:38. | :23:47.
get angry? Yes. Why is that? Because I have anger problems. We | :23:47. | :23:53.
want to go back to No. 3 again, cross over and get back to base. I | :23:53. | :23:59.
have learnt more about myself, really. Stuff that I never knew I | :23:59. | :24:04.
could do. And I never thought I would be able to do. I have figured | :24:04. | :24:11.
out that I can. Mike's main focus and all of this is to encourage | :24:11. | :24:14.
leader should be young people. He found some inspiration in an | :24:14. | :24:22.
unlikely place. Last some were rioting swept through London. At | :24:22. | :24:26.
the same time, it might was planning this course. Then he chose | :24:26. | :24:31.
the wrong time to ride his motorbike through Peckham. I was | :24:31. | :24:38.
attacked by a young man, closely followed by a whole load of other | :24:38. | :24:46.
youngsters. I was pelted with a chair. Then Roxanne beer bottles | :24:46. | :24:54.
followed suit. What struck me was down macro what struck you was a | :24:54. | :25:02.
chair! That is absolutely true! As I was driving away, it struck me | :25:02. | :25:07.
that this was a young man and the group who were at misadventure in | :25:07. | :25:11.
and that we could channel planned and venture into positive outcomes, | :25:11. | :25:15.
the very thing this is designed to do you, how that young man could be | :25:15. | :25:21.
a great leader. Meanwhile, Alan, a volunteer mentor is dealing with | :25:21. | :25:28.
one of the children who has been upset by another. Don't let him in | :25:28. | :25:35.
power himself against you in that way. Cable only do its if he knows | :25:35. | :25:40.
it bothers you. Alan knows what it is like to be a teenager in trouble. | :25:40. | :25:46.
I got involved with the wrong crowd. Went to prison a couple of times. I | :25:46. | :25:54.
came out in got approached by my social worker. I have been involved | :25:54. | :26:04.
:26:04. | :26:13. | ||
Alan here is a very nice man. Thank you. A strongly believes that any | :26:13. | :26:16.
kid from any background with the right support and direction will | :26:16. | :26:26.
:26:26. | :26:27. | ||
excel in anything they want to do. Do you want to go back in and give | :26:27. | :26:32.
it another go? Tried the ignoring thing, you will see. Tell me if it | :26:32. | :26:39.
doesn't work. It is time for decades to face their fear. What | :26:39. | :26:46.
they are going to need is a head for heights. I don't want to! I | :26:46. | :26:51.
can't. I don't want to! Climbing is a fantastic activity because it | :26:51. | :26:59.
involves not just a personal challenge, but also it is a team | :26:59. | :27:02.
activity so it involves a lot of trust, working together and | :27:02. | :27:11.
respecting people. Kieran is 13 years old and has a bit of a temper. | :27:11. | :27:17.
I can be a grumpy person. Just remember, relax. But he knows if he | :27:17. | :27:23.
doesn't make it to the top he will be angry with himself. I am too | :27:23. | :27:31.
scared. You are so close. And too scared, too scared. Please don't do | :27:31. | :27:40.
it to me. He challenged himself and pushed himself. I have made it. | :27:40. | :27:50.
:27:50. | :27:51. | ||
want from gets the magic on his face. Superb! Well done. How did | :27:51. | :27:58.
that feel? Way you good. He can meet any challenge he wants, | :27:58. | :28:05.
because, remember the climbing? Kieran, Darnell and Israel now have | :28:05. | :28:09.
another challenge in front of them, called the rest of their lives. | :28:09. | :28:15.
you follow me I will show you the way. This way you won't get lost. | :28:15. | :28:25.
