brought to justice? | 0:00:09 | 0:00:12
It was a really basic error. | 0:00:12 | 0:00:14
It's not something we'd expdct from the Forensic Science Sdrvice. | 0:00:14 | 0:00:17

That's correct. | 0:00:20 | 0:00:22
Think chip and pin security is failsafd? | 0:00:22 | 0:00:25
Think again. | 0:00:25 | 0:00:28

I'm Jemma Woodman. | 0:00:44 | 0:00:47
Welcome to a new series of Inside Out South West. | 0:00:47 | 0:00:53
It's one of the south west's most shocking unsolved murddrs. | 0:01:01 | 0:01:04
17 years ago, schoolgirl Kate Bushell was stabbed | 0:01:04 | 0:01:08
near her home in Exeter. | 0:01:08 | 0:01:12
Now Simon Hall has uncovered an extraordinary blunder | 0:01:12 | 0:01:15
in the investigation. | 0:01:15 | 0:01:17
I've lost a very good friend in her. | 0:01:17 | 0:01:23
Just her cheerful presence around the house. | 0:01:23 | 0:01:28
We have had such a fabulous 14 years that will always | 0:01:28 | 0:01:32
be a treasure to us. | 0:01:32 | 0:01:38
It would have been lovely if that had been a full lifdspan, | 0:01:38 | 0:01:41
but we treasure what we've had. | 0:01:41 | 0:01:43
We're grateful for it. | 0:01:43 | 0:01:45
17 years ago, Kate's parents, Jeremy and Suzanne, spoke of their loss. | 0:01:45 | 0:01:51
It was a Saturday evening in the run up to Christmas. | 0:01:51 | 0:01:54
Kate was walking a neighbour's dog a few hundred yards from her Exeter | 0:01:54 | 0:01:57
home. | 0:01:57 | 0:01:59 | |
When she didn't return, her family began a search and her | 0:01:59 | 0:02:06
body was found by her father. | 0:02:06 | 0:02:10
When, two months ago, Kate Bushell was killed while walking a dog | 0:02:10 | 0:02:13
near her home in Devon, the story made front`page ndws. | 0:02:13 | 0:02:17
The killing shocked the nathon, and featured prominently on Crilewatch. | 0:02:17 | 0:02:22
I can remember driving along and having the windows open, | 0:02:22 | 0:02:25
just in case we could hear her as we went past. | 0:02:25 | 0:02:29
If she's not at her friend's, then we'll call the police. | 0:02:29 | 0:02:33
For some reason, I just began to get this sort of gut | 0:02:33 | 0:02:35
feeling of panic or dread inside. | 0:02:35 | 0:02:40
Now we can reveal, in the year following this | 0:02:40 | 0:02:42
reconstruction of the discovery of Kate's body, key forensic evidence | 0:02:42 | 0:02:46
in the case was contaminated. | 0:02:46 | 0:02:48
That resulted in a major police operation being | 0:02:48 | 0:02:50
wasted, the incrimination of an innocent man, and it casts doubt on | 0:02:50 | 0:02:55
whether a successful prosecttion can ever be brought against the killer. | 0:02:55 | 0:03:01
The inquiry, Operation Deakhn, was overseen here | 0:03:01 | 0:03:03
at police headquarters in Exeter. | 0:03:03 | 0:03:06
We've spoken to several of the original investigation team. | 0:03:06 | 0:03:09
They've told us of hopes behng raised for a breakthrough, `nd their | 0:03:09 | 0:03:13
astonishment and anger when the new lead turned out to be nothing more | 0:03:13 | 0:03:17
than a basic error in forensics | 0:03:17 | 0:03:22
In terms of contamination bx fibres, it is a serious blunder, | 0:03:22 | 0:03:25
without a doubt. | 0:03:25 | 0:03:28
It was a really basic error. | 0:03:28 | 0:03:30
It's not something we'd expdct from the Forensic Science Sdrvice or | 0:03:30 | 0:03:33
our forensic providers. | 0:03:33 | 0:03:35
The contamination happened during a review of the case. | 0:03:35 | 0:03:39
At the time of the murder, forensic evidence was taken from Katd's body | 0:03:39 | 0:03:42
and clothing, and possible suspects ` but led to no breakthroughs. | 0:03:42 | 0:03:47
The review, though, sent the samples for re`testing ` | 0:03:47 | 0:03:50
and made what appeared to bd a startling discovery. | 0:03:50 | 0:03:55
Tiny purple fibres were detdcted on the samples taken from K`te, | 0:03:55 | 0:03:59
and also on clothes taken from a man who lived in the local area. | 0:03:59 | 0:04:04
A new team of detectives was assembled | 0:04:04 | 0:04:06
and began investigating him. | 0:04:06 | 0:04:08
But he had an alibi and had been eliminated | 0:04:08 | 0:04:11
from the original inquiry. | 0:04:11 | 0:04:14
After around three months of work, detectives eventually concltded he | 0:04:14 | 0:04:16
couldn't possibly be the killer | 0:04:16 | 0:04:18
Other exhibits from the casd were also re`examined, and more purple | 0:04:18 | 0:04:21
fibres were found there, too. | 0:04:21 | 0:04:27
The samples were analysed by a government agency, | 0:04:27 | 0:04:29
the Forensic Science Servicd. | 0:04:29 | 0:04:32
They checked their work...and | 0:04:32 | 0:04:33
discovered something shocking. | 0:04:33 | 0:04:35
There'd been contamination. | 0:04:35 | 0:04:37
A technician was wearing a top which left the same purple fibres | 0:04:37 | 0:04:41
on the different sets of exhibits. | 0:04:41 | 0:04:45
Chris Boarland is a former head of CID at Devon and Cornwall Police. | 0:04:45 | 0:04:48
He told me it was a dreadful error which would have | 0:04:48 | 0:04:51
hampered the investigation. | 0:04:51 | 0:04:54
It doesn't really get more serious. | 0:04:54 | 0:04:55
As a police service, we havd very, very strict routines in terls | 0:04:55 | 0:05:03
of recovery of evidence, making sure that it's handldd | 0:05:03 | 0:05:06
properly and that it eventu`lly gets to the forensic science provider | 0:05:06 | 0:05:10
in an uncontaminated form. | 0:05:10 | 0:05:14
Once it's there, I think we have generally relied upon their | 0:05:14 | 0:05:16
professionalism and their absolutely tip`top procedures for making sure | 0:05:16 | 0:05:22
that they never get contaminated. | 0:05:22 | 0:05:25
It's a blow when something like this happens. | 0:05:25 | 0:05:28
The contamination also casts doubt on whether | 0:05:28 | 0:05:31
a successful prosecution cotld now be brought against the murddrer | 0:05:31 | 0:05:35
Barrister David Osborne says the defence in any trial would have to | 0:05:35 | 0:05:38
be told about it, and could use the error to undermine forensic evidence | 0:05:38 | 0:05:43
that might be put before a jury | 0:05:43 | 0:05:47
It would be enormously useftl, if you are looking, as one hs, | 0:05:47 | 0:05:50
to the acquittal of the man accused of the crime | 0:05:50 | 0:05:57
I would submit, indeed, I would be surprised, in fact, | 0:05:57 | 0:06:00
that I would need to submit because I would have thought | 0:06:00 | 0:06:03
the prosecution would understand that in a case such as this, | 0:06:03 | 0:06:07
where it is contaminated evhdence, that it would be unfair to proceed. | 0:06:07 | 0:06:13
That would be my submission to the charge and I would expect | 0:06:13 | 0:06:17
the judge to agree. | 0:06:17 | 0:06:18
So an issue like this could be sufficiently | 0:06:18 | 0:06:20
serious to mean a case could not proceed against the defendant? | 0:06:20 | 0:06:23
That's correct. | 0:06:23 | 0:06:28
The defence, quite rightly, would make an issue of this. | 0:06:28 | 0:06:31
They may be able to discount particular fibres, | 0:06:31 | 0:06:33
but they are understandably going to call into question | 0:06:33 | 0:06:36
the whole forensic procedurd, and they would want to cast doubt | 0:06:36 | 0:06:39
on any other forensic evidence. | 0:06:39 | 0:06:42
Hopefully, the police and Forensic Scidnce | 0:06:42 | 0:06:46
Service providers will be in a position to be able to substantiate | 0:06:46 | 0:06:50
everything else they have got. | 0:06:50 | 0:06:54
Yes, to some extent, it's m`nner from heaven for any defence. | 0:06:54 | 0:07:01
Despite extensive search and continuing investigations, Kate s | 0:07:01 | 0:07:03
murderer has never been caught. | 0:07:03 | 0:07:07
But the police believe ` evdn with the forensics errors ` a prosecution | 0:07:07 | 0:07:11
remains possible, as they still have samples which were not cont`minated. | 0:07:11 | 0:07:19
Clearly, it is an issue we would have to disclose to the defdnce | 0:07:19 | 0:07:22
for the reasons you have outlined. | 0:07:22 | 0:07:23
But I maintain that it is not insurmountable. | 0:07:23 | 0:07:26
It is an issue, we would disclose that to the defence but, actually, | 0:07:26 | 0:07:29
in terms of our forensic evhdence, contamination has occurred | 0:07:29 | 0:07:33
but the forensic test that took place before that would be secure. | 0:07:33 | 0:07:38
It would inevitably damage your case, though? | 0:07:38 | 0:07:40
It would undermine the case. | 0:07:40 | 0:07:43
We deal with issues that undermine the case on a daily basis. | 0:07:43 | 0:07:46
It's something we would disclose to the defence team and, | 0:07:46 | 0:07:50
as a prosecution team, we would work through it. | 0:07:50 | 0:07:52
Do you still think you could get a conviction after that? | 0:07:52 | 0:07:54
There's no reason we couldn't get a conviction but clearly we are long | 0:07:54 | 0:07:58
way from that at the present time. | 0:07:58 | 0:08:00
The history of the Forensic Science Service ` which was based in | 0:08:00 | 0:08:03
Chepstow ` was not a gloriots one. | 0:08:03 | 0:08:06
It was littered with errors and high profile embarrassmdnts | 0:08:06 | 0:10:21
But an Inside Out investigation has discovered criminal gangs are using | 0:10:21 | 0:10:24
specially adapted machines to steal our bank details and then otr cash. | 0:10:24 | 0:10:30
Jonathan Gibson has this exclusive report. | 0:10:30 | 0:10:35
It's Friday night and for most of us the weekend's started ` me hncluded. | 0:10:35 | 0:10:40
Definitely try some of this | 0:10:40 | 0:10:42
It's nice. | 0:10:42 | 0:10:43
A few drinks and some food out ` and if like me you've never got | 0:10:43 | 0:10:47
cash, a card comes in handy. | 0:10:47 | 0:10:51
Enter your pin, please. | 0:10:51 | 0:10:52
OK. | 0:10:52 | 0:10:53 | |
For ten years now we've all been using these ` chip and pin lachines. | 0:10:53 | 0:10:58
And the place I've come for dinner is no different. | 0:10:58 | 0:11:05
Remember when we used to sign for things in shops? | 0:11:05 | 0:11:08
The banks told us chip and PIN would be much safer. | 0:11:08 | 0:11:14
Well, try telling Julie from Weymouth that. | 0:11:14 | 0:11:17
We went to buy fuel at a local petrol station and | 0:11:17 | 0:11:20
apparently there was a camera set up in the ceiling that was looking down | 0:11:20 | 0:11:23
onto the machine, recording us as we were putting in our PIN numbers | 0:11:23 | 0:11:28
The thieves who stole Julie's cash were caught red`handed. | 0:11:28 | 0:11:31
But a quick look online shows there are many more victims. | 0:11:31 | 0:11:38
That's the thing with the internet ` there are the good people on there, | 0:11:38 | 0:11:41
like the innocent victims ` and then there are the bad. | 0:11:41 | 0:11:46
I'm talking to a man who knows all about stolen pin numbers | 0:11:46 | 0:11:49
because he steals them ..and | 0:11:49 | 0:11:50
he's looking for a new partner. | 0:11:50 | 0:11:55
Why not? | 0:11:55 | 0:11:57
Funnily enough, I haven't mentioned I'm a journalist. | 0:11:57 | 0:11:59
He thinks I own a restaurant with card paying | 0:11:59 | 0:12:03
customers, but I need to gahn his trust and that's taking months. | 0:12:03 | 0:12:08
But one day he tells me a parcel's in the post. | 0:12:08 | 0:12:14
It's a chip and pin machine. | 0:12:14 | 0:12:18
I've already spent months g`ining this criminal's confidence but he | 0:12:18 | 0:12:21
still doesn't trust me completely. | 0:12:21 | 0:12:24
He's finally agreed to chat but is banking on staying anonymous | 0:12:24 | 0:12:27
over the internet. | 0:12:27 | 0:12:30
We'll see about that! | 0:12:30 | 0:12:34
Press F1, then 1. | 0:12:34 | 0:12:36
He tells me the machine he's sent me remembers people's card numbers | 0:12:36 | 0:12:41
Once you've swiped it, the data's already been savdd | 0:12:41 | 0:12:43
from the first swipe, but now when you enter the pin the pin is stored | 0:12:43 | 0:12:47
and now all the data is there. | 0:12:47 | 0:12:48
That's everything he needs to steal people's cash. | 0:12:48 | 0:12:53
Do it like how the restaurant's receipt looks. | 0:12:53 | 0:12:55
It's fully customisable. | 0:12:55 | 0:12:56
He's told me to put this error message on the bottom | 0:12:56 | 0:12:59
of the receipt so my customdrs will think the machine's not working | 0:12:59 | 0:13:02
That's so I can swap it for my normal one to take | 0:13:02 | 0:13:05
their real payment. | 0:13:05 | 0:13:08
What I now need to work out is a way of putting that to thd test. | 0:13:08 | 0:13:13
And I think I've found the `nswer! | 0:13:13 | 0:13:17
Pay`as`you `go debit cards. | 0:13:17 | 0:13:18
They're a bit like mobile phone top ups. | 0:13:18 | 0:13:20
You can only spend what you put on them. | 0:13:20 | 0:13:24
I've bought 20 to try out. | 0:13:24 | 0:13:27
I need him to think they belong to my customers, but will it work? | 0:13:27 | 0:13:31
He's told me I'll need to download the data using somd | 0:13:31 | 0:13:33
cables he's sent me in the post | 0:13:34 | 0:13:36
Can you just plug that into your laptop? | 0:13:36 | 0:13:39
A couple more connections and we're ready to rock. | 0:13:39 | 0:13:43
Is it downloading? | 0:13:43 | 0:13:43
Yep, it's receiving stuff Ydah, OK, so when it's done downloading, just | 0:13:43 | 0:13:48
send me that file and it's done | 0:13:48 | 0:13:50
That's how you download. | 0:13:50 | 0:13:51
Completed. | 0:13:51 | 0:13:52
Just look at this. | 0:13:52 | 0:13:53
He's just emailed me through the rest of the card numbers | 0:13:53 | 0:13:56
and the PINs that go with them for these cards here. | 0:13:56 | 0:14:02
In a couple of minutes, he's got everything he needs to make exact | 0:14:02 | 0:14:05
copies of all these cards, which he can then use in cashpoints. | 0:14:05 | 0:14:12
And he says he's done that already time and time again. | 0:14:12 | 0:14:17
Remember Julie? | 0:14:20 | 0:14:21
She had her card cloned at the garage. | 0:14:21 | 0:14:23
I want to show her how chip and pin fraud has moved on. | 0:14:23 | 0:14:27
And there's the receipt, what do you think? | 0:14:27 | 0:14:30
Wow, well it's just the real thing isn't it? | 0:14:30 | 0:14:32
I mean, if I was in a restatrant and somebody gave me this, I wotld just | 0:14:32 | 0:14:36
accept that my payment had been cancelled and be none the whser | 0:14:36 | 0:14:40
But if Julie's shocked, what will the banks think? | 0:14:41 | 0:14:47
I think the encouraging thing to say is that these frauds are very rare. | 0:14:47 | 0:14:50
We've only seen one recent hnstance of them | 0:14:50 | 0:14:52
and we're seeing convictions in the Old Bailey in respect of that. | 0:14:52 | 0:14:55
The industry's existing advhce to consumers is to protect your PIN. | 0:14:55 | 0:14:58
Well, with something like that there's no point is there? | 0:14:58 | 0:15:01
It's the device itself that takes the PIN number. | 0:15:01 | 0:15:05
Well, I think the first reassurance to give | 0:15:05 | 0:15:07
everybody when it comes to this type of fraud, which is a very r`re type | 0:15:07 | 0:15:11
of crime, is that even if you are the victim of it, you'll receive a | 0:15:11 | 0:15:14
full refund of all of your losses. | 0:15:14 | 0:15:18
But we always advise customdrs to check their statements. | 0:15:18 | 0:15:24
I'm about to do just that. | 0:15:24 | 0:15:27
As all the pay as you go debit cards are in my name, I can also check | 0:15:27 | 0:15:31
what's been happening to thdm. | 0:15:32 | 0:15:33
Take these two, for example. | 0:15:33 | 0:15:34
They've never left my wallet but, according to the transaction | 0:15:34 | 0:15:37
history, they've been emptidd of cash in the Philippines. | 0:15:37 | 0:15:42
So either he's stealing my money or someone he knows is | 0:15:42 | 0:15:46
But he's also sent me a second machine so | 0:15:46 | 0:15:48
at least he's not suspicious. | 0:15:49 | 0:15:50
But who is he? | 0:15:50 | 0:15:52
He's taking cash out in the Philippines | 0:15:52 | 0:15:55
but the machines came from Britain. | 0:15:55 | 0:15:57
I've also sent money to Can`da for the cables he posted. | 0:15:57 | 0:16:01
I'm not sure that's really helped. | 0:16:01 | 0:16:03
He could be on either side of the world! | 0:16:03 | 0:16:06
OK, time to change tactics. | 0:16:06 | 0:16:08
How about I tell him I've btsted the machine? | 0:16:08 | 0:16:12
I'm hoping he'll ask me to send it for repair and | 0:16:12 | 0:16:15
if he trusts me enough, he might give me an address though | 0:16:15 | 0:16:19
it might not be his of course. | 0:16:19 | 0:16:21
Bingo. | 0:16:21 | 0:16:22
He's taken the bait, telling me to send it to | 0:16:22 | 0:16:25
Marcus Montague in Canada, the guy I paid for the cablds. | 0:16:25 | 0:16:28
But this is one parcel I plan to hand deliver. | 0:16:28 | 0:16:33
Bags packed, passports checked. | 0:16:35 | 0:16:37
Let's go find him. | 0:16:37 | 0:16:38
Toronto, Canada. | 0:16:44 | 0:16:46
I'm heading out of town ` 24 miles along the freeway to Pickerhng. | 0:16:46 | 0:16:49
Is the guy we've been given the address | 0:16:49 | 0:16:54
for the guy that's been on Skype? | 0:16:54 | 0:16:57
That we've been talking to for what months now? | 0:16:57 | 0:17:01
There's only one way to makd sure and that means me playing postie. | 0:17:01 | 0:17:06
Yes, we're happy to help at TRN Couriers OK, so the accent needs | 0:17:06 | 0:17:10
work, but I'm hoping the unhform will shine along with the f`ke | 0:17:10 | 0:17:15
delivery note ` oh, and I'm wearing a secret camera. Montague? | 0:17:15 | 0:17:22
Yeah, where do I sign? | 0:17:22 | 0:17:26
That one there, mate. | 0:17:26 | 0:17:27
Yep, it's Marcus Montague and here's his signature to prove it. | 0:17:33 | 0:17:38
So it's time to confront hil. | 0:17:38 | 0:17:43
BEEP. | 0:17:43 | 0:17:45 | |
Woah, don't hit him. | 0:17:45 | 0:17:47
I'll say I've got the courier delivery. | 0:17:47 | 0:17:53
Stay back, Mike, stay back. | 0:17:53 | 0:17:56
Montague, I've got a delivery for you mate, a delivery for you? | 0:17:56 | 0:18:01
No, I can't accept, I can't accept if I don't know about it, you know. | 0:18:01 | 0:18:05
Right, OK. | 0:18:05 | 0:18:06
It's time to come clean. | 0:18:06 | 0:18:08
Actually mate I'm from the BBC, BBC television in the UK and I'd | 0:18:08 | 0:18:11
like to ask you a couple of questions actually about your | 0:18:11 | 0:18:14
involvement in chip and pin fraud. | 0:18:14 | 0:18:16
Pardon me? | 0:18:16 | 0:18:17
Chip and Pin fraud, mate, do you know about it? | 0:18:17 | 0:18:19
No. | 0:18:19 | 0:18:20 | |
I think you do because we'vd been sending deliveries to your `ddress | 0:18:20 | 0:18:23
and you've been taking them. | 0:18:23 | 0:18:25
No, I haven't. | 0:18:25 | 0:18:26
You've been taking them. | 0:18:26 | 0:18:27
Ah, don't go away mate, we're asking you a few questions | 0:18:27 | 0:18:30
here, don't run us over. | 0:18:30 | 0:18:31
No, no, I'm not trying to run you over. | 0:18:31 | 0:18:33
I don't know what's going on here. | 0:18:33 | 0:18:35
We just need to know mate your involvement with chip and phn fraud? | 0:18:35 | 0:18:38
You're scaring me. | 0:18:38 | 0:18:39
Who are you who are you actually involved with then? | 0:18:39 | 0:18:41
Oh, you guys really scare md. | 0:18:41 | 0:18:42
Who are you actually working with then? | 0:18:42 | 0:18:44
Are you making a lot of mondy out of it, are you making a lot | 0:18:44 | 0:18:48
of money out of it? | 0:18:48 | 0:18:52
Well, not many answers raisdd, a few more questions, perhaps, but, | 0:18:52 | 0:18:58
um, whatever the case, he w`sn't very keen to hang around, w`s he? | 0:18:58 | 0:19:04
I think that's probably the last we'll see of him, at least for now. | 0:19:04 | 0:19:13
Can I get a couple of pounds of plums and some apples, as well? | 0:19:13 | 0:19:16
Back home, I'm still in the market for answers btt | 0:19:16 | 0:19:20
Verifone ` which makes the lachines ` doesn't want to be intervhewed. | 0:19:20 | 0:19:25
I wanted to show it our evidence. | 0:19:25 | 0:19:27
It decided on a statement. | 0:19:27 | 0:19:30
VeriFone says the fraud: | 0:19:30 | 0:19:35
The company says it: | 0:19:37 | 0:19:41
And its machines are not to blame. | 0:19:45 | 0:19:47
Can you put your PIN in, pldase | 0:19:47 | 0:19:50
Do you know what, mate, I think I'll leave it! | 0:19:50 | 0:19:56
We've made him give up boozd, take up exercise, | 0:19:58 | 0:20:01
even run a marathon ` but now Fitz faces his toughest challengd. | 0:20:01 | 0:20:07
To cut back on life's sweetest treats. | 0:20:07 | 0:20:12
So why this challenge? | 0:20:24 | 0:20:25
Because we're a nation addicted to sugar ` every year each | 0:20:25 | 0:20:28
of us eats more than 33kg. | 0:20:28 | 0:20:32
But now Government scientifhc advisors are suggesting we halve | 0:20:32 | 0:20:34
the amount we eat to just 5$ of our daily energy intake. | 0:20:34 | 0:20:39
At present, we're consuming about three times that amount, so this new | 0:20:39 | 0:20:42
target could be hard to swallow | 0:20:42 | 0:20:46
Time to see my personal dietician to find out exactly | 0:20:46 | 0:20:49
what I've let myself in for. | 0:20:49 | 0:20:52
Hillary, nice to see you ag`in. | 0:20:52 | 0:20:54
Good morning. | 0:20:54 | 0:20:55
Talk to me about sugar. | 0:20:55 | 0:20:58
I would say sugar is an empty calorie, we don't need it. | 0:20:58 | 0:21:03
What sort of amount of sugar should I be taking per day? | 0:21:03 | 0:21:07
You should be looking at between eight and nine teaspoons | 0:21:07 | 0:21:09
a day and, if you were female, about six teaspoons a day, which is | 0:21:09 | 0:21:14
what this plate illustrates. | 0:21:14 | 0:21:16
Okay, but what about this plate beside it? | 0:21:16 | 0:21:19
This represents the amount of sugar in a packet of fizzy, sugary | 0:21:19 | 0:21:22
sweets and it's 38 teaspoons. | 0:21:22 | 0:21:27
You can see, if you're feelhng a bit peckish and make your way | 0:21:27 | 0:21:31
through a whole packet, that's many days of your sugar intake gone. | 0:21:31 | 0:21:34
As a diabetic, I have to watch my sugar intake | 0:21:34 | 0:21:38
What should I be looking out for? | 0:21:38 | 0:21:40
It's the sugar that somebody has either | 0:21:40 | 0:21:42
physically added to their drinks, or added to cooking, or that the | 0:21:42 | 0:21:45
manufacturer has added to products like cereals, cakes and biscuits. | 0:21:45 | 0:21:50
Many manufacturers have redtced sugar in the product, but how | 0:21:50 | 0:21:54
much of the stuff am I eating? | 0:21:54 | 0:21:56
Right ` day one of the diet and this is an average weekly shop. | 0:21:56 | 0:21:59
My wife has gone out and botght well, I consider this not overly | 0:21:59 | 0:22:03
packed with sugar. | 0:22:03 | 0:22:04
We've got fresh vegetables and fruit ` of course, | 0:22:04 | 0:22:06
fruit does contain sugar, but let's look at the sugar levels | 0:22:06 | 0:22:09
in some of the processed foods. | 0:22:09 | 0:22:12
Let's put the reading glassds on because some of the small print | 0:22:12 | 0:22:15
does make interesting reading. | 0:22:15 | 0:22:19
Beans, well, 200g is the serving. | 0:22:19 | 0:22:23
Sugar is 9.9g. | 0:22:23 | 0:22:27
A cereal which sells itself through fitness, on a 40g serving, | 0:22:27 | 0:22:32
the sugar level here is 12.0g. | 0:22:32 | 0:22:37
In here, I have normal fruit, which, of course, has sugar in it `s well. | 0:22:37 | 0:22:40
Even dried fruit is very high in sugar, The official advice is | 0:22:40 | 0:22:56
that a balanced diet should include some fruit, but even this more | 0:22:56 | 0:23:00
natural source of sweetness has been causing problems for | 0:23:00 | 0:23:03
our cousins here at Paignton Zoo. | 0:23:03 | 0:23:07
The image of monkey and ban`na, it is synonymous. | 0:23:07 | 0:23:09
It is absolutely fixed in everyone's minds. | 0:23:09 | 0:23:13
We have heard a lot of publicity about no longer giving | 0:23:13 | 0:23:16
the monkeys bananas. | 0:23:16 | 0:23:19
We don't give them any fruit at all. | 0:23:19 | 0:23:21
They think, surely they must eat bananas? | 0:23:21 | 0:23:24
They are very happy without it. | 0:23:24 | 0:23:25
Are you sure? | 0:23:25 | 0:23:27
Yes. | 0:23:27 | 0:23:28 | |
If you offered them of another, they would surely take it off you, | 0:23:28 | 0:23:31
but they don't need them and get used to diets withott them. | 0:23:31 | 0:23:35
Did you notice a change in their behaviour or physipue? | 0:23:35 | 0:23:38
Certainly, in their physiqud. | 0:23:38 | 0:23:40
Some of them have lost weight. | 0:23:40 | 0:23:46
We did start to notice behavioural improvements. | 0:23:46 | 0:23:51
Our research shows they are much less aggressive, | 0:23:51 | 0:23:56
less anxious and calmer. | 0:23:56 | 0:24:04
So calm, happy and healthy `pes ` There are those that belidve | 0:24:04 | 0:24:08
that we need the same treatlent | 0:24:08 | 0:24:11
Action on Sugar's Katherine Jenner leads a campaign to reduce sugar | 0:24:11 | 0:24:13
in our diet. | 0:24:13 | 0:24:15
We get out energy from fat, carbohydrates and protein. | 0:24:15 | 0:24:20
We don't need to get it from added sugar. | 0:24:20 | 0:24:22
I think we should consider laking some major changes to our dhets | 0:24:22 | 0:24:26
Well, the zookeepers here h`ve intervened with the diet here. | 0:24:26 | 0:24:30
Should there be greater intervention for us? | 0:24:30 | 0:24:34
I think there is a reason for government intervention. | 0:24:34 | 0:24:36
The first thing they can do is set limits to the amount of sug`r | 0:24:36 | 0:24:40
allowed in food, particularly things eaten by children ` | 0:24:40 | 0:24:42
breakfast cereals and soft drinks. | 0:24:42 | 0:24:45
We get used to having less sugar and still get to enjoy our food | 0:24:45 | 0:24:49
The Food and Drink Federation, which represents the industry, | 0:24:49 | 0:24:51
says it's the total amount of calories we put away that's the | 0:24:51 | 0:24:54
issue, not where they come from | 0:24:54 | 0:24:59
They say sugar doesn't cause obesity. | 0:24:59 | 0:25:01
But it appears that what's been good for the monkey has been good for me. | 0:25:01 | 0:25:05
Well, three weeks into this diet `nd, | 0:25:05 | 0:25:07
to be honest, it's not a struggle. | 0:25:07 | 0:25:09
I'm actually enjoying the food. | 0:25:09 | 0:25:10
I'm eating full English bre`kfasts, grilled with no bread and stgar | 0:25:10 | 0:25:15
I know the weight's coming off, I'm feeling better and I'm dnjoying | 0:25:15 | 0:25:20
it, so let's see what we can do over the next week and maybe beyond. | 0:25:20 | 0:25:27
But first it's time to meet a food industry insider. | 0:25:27 | 0:25:30
Langage Farm's Paul Winterton is showing me how they package | 0:25:30 | 0:25:33
their clotted cream ice cre`m. | 0:25:33 | 0:25:36
You know, I'm just wondering if I can get | 0:25:36 | 0:25:38
my mouth over the end of th`t pipe! | 0:25:38 | 0:25:42
Paul says that the food indtstry has to do more to combat obesitx and | 0:25:42 | 0:25:46
diabetes ` he literally bears the scars of an unhealthy lifestyle | 0:25:46 | 0:25:51
I had a double bypass, which was removal of an artdry | 0:25:51 | 0:25:54
from my chest and one from ly arm, and these two grafted the bxpass. | 0:25:54 | 0:26:01
But the real reason I'm herd is to see the sugar free products that | 0:26:01 | 0:26:04
Paul has been developing, spurred on by his experiencd. | 0:26:04 | 0:26:09
The only sugars in here are naturally`occurring sugars | 0:26:09 | 0:26:11
like lactose in milk or fructose in fruit, which is 100% purd. | 0:26:11 | 0:26:16
So what have you put in there? | 0:26:16 | 0:26:18
Well, there's an extract in there called stevia, which is | 0:26:18 | 0:26:21
derived from a stevia leaf. | 0:26:21 | 0:26:23
It's a derivative from nature which is approximately 600 times | 0:26:23 | 0:26:26
sweeter than sugar. | 0:26:26 | 0:26:32
Do you know, immediately, because I haven't had sugar | 0:26:32 | 0:26:39
for such a long time, the flavours are so intense and that's so sweet. | 0:26:39 | 0:26:46
And there's no sugar in there at all? | 0:26:46 | 0:26:48
None at all. | 0:26:48 | 0:26:49
Do you think the industry, as a whole, has | 0:26:49 | 0:26:51
a responsibility to reduce sugar? | 0:26:51 | 0:26:53
Yes, I do. | 0:26:53 | 0:26:55
If you look at food manufacturing, as well as the government, H think | 0:26:55 | 0:26:59
they have a mutual part to play | 0:26:59 | 0:27:01
It's my personal opinion th`t we should be teaching food nutrition | 0:27:01 | 0:27:05
at an early age. | 0:27:05 | 0:27:09
Well, that's what one industry insider thinks, but Sugar Nttrition | 0:27:09 | 0:27:12
UK, which is largely funded by sugar manufacturers, point to a 2013 | 0:27:12 | 0:27:18
review on sugar and obesity funded by the World Health Organiz`tion. | 0:27:18 | 0:27:21
It concluded that: | 0:27:21 | 0:27:24
"any link to body weight was due to overconsumption of calories | 0:27:24 | 0:27:28
and was not specific to sug`rs" | 0:27:28 | 0:27:31
They also say that, "the balance of available evidence | 0:27:31 | 0:27:35
does not implicate sugar in any of the so`called 'lifestyle | 0:27:35 | 0:27:37
diseases', such as diabetes". | 0:27:38 | 0:27:41
The debate over scientific dvidence will go on, but I know for sure that | 0:27:41 | 0:27:45
cutting out added sugar has left me thinner and feeling great. | 0:27:45 | 0:27:53
This is the last day of the official diet and I'm used to this now, | 0:27:53 | 0:27:57
because this is what I've bden going through for the last 30 days. | 0:27:57 | 0:28:00
Nothing fried, everything grilled, no sugar and no bread. | 0:28:00 | 0:28:04
I know I've lost weight and I'm feeling a lot better. | 0:28:04 | 0:28:08
Even though this is the offhcial end of the diet, I'm going to continue. | 0:28:08 | 0:28:11
I'm going to be more sugar``ware, I'm going to be cutting sug`r out | 0:28:11 | 0:28:15
of my diet. | 0:28:15 | 0:28:15
What about you? | 0:28:15 | 0:28:16
Food for thought? | 0:28:16 | 0:28:22
Well, that's all from us thhs week but we look forward to seeing you | 0:28:25 | 0:28:28
next Monday for more stories and investigations from where you live. | 0:28:28 | 0:28:32
We'll see you then. | 0:28:32 | 0:28:37
Hello, I'm Ellie Crisell with your 90 Second Update. | 0:29:07 | 0:29:10
The parents of seriously ill Ashya King are tonight in a Spanish | 0:29:10 | 0:29:13
jail as phey fight extradition. | 0:29:13 | 0:29:16
They were arrested !fter removifg him from a Southampton hos0ital | 0:29:16 | 0:29:18 |
