Now on BBC One, it's Inside Out West Midlands. | :00:00. | :00:00.
On this week's Inside Out, the man who saved the people | :00:00. | :00:08.
And a roof over their heads - the other Dorchester hotel that's | :00:09. | :00:24.
full every night with guests who have nowhere else to go. | :00:25. | :00:29.
Every time I lived here, I loved it here. | :00:30. | :00:48.
First though, in this quiet corner of Birmingham it's hard to believe | :00:49. | :00:51.
that guns are once again a major problem in this city. | :00:52. | :00:53.
12 years ago, tough action and help from the community cut gun crime | :00:54. | :00:57.
following the senseless driveby shooting of two teenage girls. | :00:58. | :00:59.
But now there's growing concern that criminals are turning | :01:00. | :01:02.
to a new source of supply for weapons as Peter Wilson has | :01:03. | :01:04.
I've been covering these streets as a reporter for half my lifetime. | :01:05. | :01:14.
At one stage, I kept trying to lie down. | :01:15. | :01:17.
I thought gun crime was a thing of the past, but now it's back - | :01:18. | :01:25.
And the police, they know it's back, too. | :01:26. | :01:37.
In the last three months, three people have been killed | :01:38. | :01:39.
One of the doctors physically had to put his hand in the hole | :01:40. | :01:51.
in my face to remove the shotgun shell. | :01:52. | :01:57.
This man was shot at point-blank range he asked us not | :01:58. | :01:59.
If it was an inch higher, it could have been my brain, | :02:00. | :02:08.
A lot of people say I'm lucky to be here. | :02:09. | :02:12.
I don't like to use the word luck, but I guess I am. | :02:13. | :02:23.
which changed his world for ever he found his son dying | :02:24. | :02:28.
it at this level where I can cope, Dave can cope, we are OK. | :02:29. | :08:50.
Diane's trial period has also ended so now, | :08:51. | :08:54.
she too is knowingly receiving the drug. | :08:55. | :08:56.
Today, she is getting her scan results and she feeling upbeat. | :08:57. | :09:01.
We are really looking forward to looking at the ones from a couple | :09:02. | :09:10.
of years ago before we started all this, and the latest ones. | :09:11. | :09:15.
Diane, here is your MRI scan, this is the most recent one. | :09:16. | :09:18.
than on the one a year ago. that is a bigger glow in this scan | :09:19. | :09:23.
Diane's brain has deteriorated. they had hoped for. | :09:24. | :09:27.
see the positive side. definitely on the drug and they can | :09:28. | :09:33.
Now you are, hopefully it will get better. | :09:34. | :09:38.
It is a weird disease. It does horrible things to you. | :09:39. | :09:43.
Oh, dear. Never mind, will be all right. | :09:44. | :09:50.
Yes, we are together, that is the thing. | :09:51. | :10:01.
I am really pleased we are part of it but I want it to make | :10:02. | :10:04.
I want it to give us longer. I want it to slow the disease down. | :10:05. | :10:12.
so it is a waiting game until then. will be available in December | :10:13. | :10:26.
Next tonight - one woman from Cornwall and her very | :10:27. | :10:29.
mischievous daughter, in their battle to win hearts | :10:30. | :10:31.
and minds in the understanding of Down's syndrome. | :10:32. | :10:34.
Sausages. going to say sausages. | :10:35. | :10:40.
The world of child modelling has a new star. | :10:41. | :10:43.
Natty Goleniowska from Cornwall is nine. | :10:44. | :10:46.
She has Down's syndrome, her starring role here an indication | :10:47. | :10:49.
that old attitudes and prejudices are changing. | :10:50. | :10:54.
Down's syndrome before birth. the ability of doctors to detect | :10:55. | :11:02.
A new test has been developed, much more accurate than | :11:03. | :11:06.
it is potentially a step backwards. but for some, that is not good news, | :11:07. | :11:11.
Big smile. That's lovely. | :11:12. | :11:22.
about Down's syndrome. an award-winning blog | :11:23. | :11:29.
had the condition. she was when doctors told her Natty | :11:30. | :11:34.
I had absolutely no idea what Down's syndrome really meant. | :11:35. | :11:38.
I had very outdated images that came to the fore in my mind, | :11:39. | :11:42.
I couldn't have been more wrong. away from view, institutionalised. | :11:43. | :11:49.
How did you do that? bust those myths. | :11:50. | :11:59.
The modelling came about because I had found so very much | :12:00. | :12:03.
support in seeing other children doing ordinary, everyday things. | :12:04. | :12:06.
But many parents still fear Down's syndrome. | :12:07. | :12:09.
pregnancies are terminated. birth, nine out of ten | :12:10. | :12:14.
Hayley believes that would change if parents were given a more | :12:15. | :12:17.
balanced picture when they were told their baby has the condition. | :12:18. | :12:22.
No one can predict what an unborn baby with Down's syndrome... | :12:23. | :12:27.
or medically. intellectually or physically | :12:28. | :12:33.
But the full set of information needs to be given to the parents | :12:34. | :12:38.
and that includes the possibilities for children these days with early | :12:39. | :12:42.
with Down's syndrome. wonderment of individuals | :12:43. | :12:49.
Natty has changed our lives beyond measure. | :12:50. | :12:58.
In Cornwall, this support group prepares welcome packs and a book | :12:59. | :13:02.
for parents of new babies with Down's syndrome. | :13:03. | :13:05.
Here too, there is concern. in the country where this happens. | :13:06. | :13:12.
If the diagnosis was received and parents are being made to feel | :13:13. | :13:17.
that the natural choice is to abort their child | :13:18. | :13:20.
because of the Down's syndrome diagnosis, then that is a real worry | :13:21. | :13:25.
screened out of existence. of society that will get | :13:26. | :13:31.
There is a whole, rich, diverse population of the world | :13:32. | :13:35.
that is not going to be here anymore and that would be a shame. | :13:36. | :13:38.
showed Down's syndrome. with her daughter, test results | :13:39. | :13:44.
She says she was repeatedly offered an abortion. | :13:45. | :13:48.
The immediate reaction was to book me in for a termination, | :13:49. | :13:52.
response to what my result was. and it was kind of just an automatic | :13:53. | :14:00.
that is necessary. bit and I said I don't | :14:01. | :14:06.
It is just not as bad as you think. she was given about the condition | :14:07. | :14:14.
but you get there. it is obvious that happens, | :14:15. | :14:22.
These parents' concerns about screening are being fuelled | :14:23. | :14:25.
by the new test which is expected to be offered on the NHS soon. | :14:26. | :14:29.
It is more accurate than what is used now. | :14:30. | :14:33.
Hayley fears that without the right advice and support for parents, | :14:34. | :14:37.
it could all but eradicate children with Down's syndrome. | :14:38. | :14:40.
That has prompted her to step up her fight. | :14:41. | :14:47.
She and Natty are travelling to Edinburgh where she will talk | :14:48. | :14:50.
at an important conference of student nurses. | :14:51. | :14:53.
She wants to challenge the negative messages about Down's syndrome. | :14:54. | :14:57.
Pop it in there, good girl. do you want to put it in for me? | :14:58. | :15:02.
To be given the privilege of being able to speak at this | :15:03. | :15:06.
conference, to hundreds of these students and to make a difference | :15:07. | :15:09.
right now at the beginning of their medical careers, hopefully, | :15:10. | :15:13.
will help other families that they encounter along the way. | :15:14. | :15:19.
Thanks, girls. and Natty later. | :15:20. | :15:25.
But first, I'm going to Great Ormond Street Hospital | :15:26. | :15:29.
in London to find out more about the new test. | :15:30. | :15:32.
It is called noninvasive pre-natal testing or NIPT. | :15:33. | :15:36.
If you are expecting, you can already have an ultrasound | :15:37. | :15:40.
scan and a blood test to see if there is a likelihood of Down's | :15:41. | :15:44.
syndrome but it is not very accurate. | :15:45. | :15:46.
If signs of the condition are spotted, you will be offered | :15:47. | :15:49.
another test to be sure. It is called amniocentesis. | :15:50. | :15:52.
Doctors use a needle to take some fluid from around the foetus. | :15:53. | :15:56.
It is accurate but there is a small risk of losing the baby. | :15:57. | :16:01.
NIPT involves testing the mother's blood for traces of the baby's DNA | :16:02. | :16:06.
How is it going, OK? which children with Down's syndrome | :16:07. | :16:13.
be offered on the NHS. study looking at whether NIPT should | :16:14. | :16:19.
The current test will identify about 85% of the babies with Down's | :16:20. | :16:23.
so it is more sensitive. identifies over 99%, | :16:24. | :16:31.
And that means that fewer women will end up being offered | :16:32. | :16:34.
have Down's syndrome. whether or not the baby does indeed | :16:35. | :16:40.
from our society altogether? with Down's syndrome | :16:41. | :16:45.
This isn't going to happen, there will still be people | :16:46. | :16:47.
who do not want to have any Down's syndrome screening and even those | :16:48. | :16:51.
that are identified by being at an increased chance of having | :16:52. | :16:54.
Down's syndrome, some still declined because they wouldn't do anything. | :16:55. | :16:56.
And we have shown that women with the diagnosis made safely | :16:57. | :17:00.
still feel that is what they want, they want the information | :17:01. | :17:03.
and they do not want to terminate the pregnancy. | :17:04. | :17:05.
So I think these fears are ungrounded. | :17:06. | :17:10.
But for Hayley, those fears are real. | :17:11. | :17:15.
She and Natty have arrived at the student nurses conference, | :17:16. | :17:17.
more determined than ever to press home their message. | :17:18. | :17:19.
Hayley, how are you feeling, are you all prepped? | :17:20. | :17:23.
I am prepped, I am ready to go, I think. | :17:24. | :17:27.
LAUGHTER and wiping doughnut off | :17:28. | :17:37.
Just that you are all here, | :17:38. | :17:44.
and some of you have travelled so far to come to such an event, | :17:45. | :17:48.
fills me with hope and thank you all. | :17:49. | :17:52.
Parents must be given time to process and think. | :17:53. | :17:56.
All too often, the only option given to families is an appointment to end | :17:57. | :17:59.
this perceived suffering before it begins. | :18:00. | :18:03.
A kind of early euthanasia, if you like. | :18:04. | :18:07.
please know that you are. you are not making a difference, | :18:08. | :18:13.
You are showing by shining example that all lives are precious | :18:14. | :18:16.
and worthy of respect and your words count. | :18:17. | :18:21.
The speech is going well but then Hayley is overcome by emotion | :18:22. | :18:25.
Bless you, Natty. of her own preconceptions | :18:26. | :18:36.
It is quite hard when she is in the room. | :18:37. | :18:50.
APPLAUSE wrong, before I knew you. | :18:51. | :19:18.
APPLAUSE I love my family. | :19:19. | :19:34.
It looked as if Hayley is winning some powerful allies. | :19:35. | :19:38.
She is talking to some of the most senior people here. | :19:39. | :19:41.
The health professional rules about helping the family | :19:42. | :19:45.
their own mind up. information and make | :19:46. | :19:50.
It is really positive, practical advice that I will take | :19:51. | :19:53.
into my practice and share with my fellow student midwives. | :19:54. | :19:58.
Hayley and other parents say their fight to have their voices | :19:59. | :20:02.
heard, whatever the future over the testing of Down's syndrome | :20:03. | :20:05.
and as medical advances make it easier to detect the condition | :20:06. | :20:09.
before birth, they will make sure the lives of people living | :20:10. | :20:12.
with Down's syndrome are accepted and respected. | :20:13. | :20:17.
is expected shortly. the new test on the NHS | :20:18. | :20:24.
Next tonight, John Cuthill has the story of how one takes people | :20:25. | :20:28.
to court despite loads of complaints of incomplete deliveries and faulty | :20:29. | :20:32.
Mind your head. thousands of pounds. | :20:33. | :20:41.
customers to court. a habit of taking his | :20:42. | :20:48.
Valerie Bailey from Basingstoke. and his business partner | :20:49. | :20:53.
Never oiled it, never greased it, never done anything to it. | :20:54. | :20:56.
They have been making thousands of pounds from families | :20:57. | :21:00.
to garden furniture. and it is all down | :21:01. | :21:05.
you can barbecue on. and you will never get another one | :21:06. | :21:10.
Richard and Valerie's company, Hampshire Garden Furniture, | :21:11. | :21:12.
sells high-end summerhouses and giant parasols. | :21:13. | :21:15.
With one hand, not two hands, with one. | :21:16. | :21:18.
Scores of customers have been summoned to court by Mr Wood. | :21:19. | :21:22.
It starts at around ?2,000. they never even made. | :21:23. | :21:32.
We bought the cafe in December 2009 and we opened in the spring of 2010. | :21:33. | :21:38.
Jayne Gray runs a beach cafe in Falmouth. | :21:39. | :21:42.
parasols, or jumbrollies. and ordered two large | :21:43. | :21:47.
A signature item from Hampshire Garden Furniture's collection. | :21:48. | :21:51.
printed on the fabric. and ordered her cafe logos to be | :21:52. | :21:57.
The second was not much better. and was taken away. | :21:58. | :22:02.
Has this ever been used in anger? is the jumbrolly. | :22:03. | :22:12.
No, we can't use it because there is a square top missing at the top | :22:13. | :22:15.
Right. come through the middle. | :22:16. | :22:19.
Can we try and see if we can get it up? | :22:20. | :22:23.
The other thing is, this was meant to be white. | :22:24. | :22:29.
If you notice, that has gone through the canvas. | :22:30. | :22:33.
That has gone right through. Right through, yes. | :22:34. | :22:35.
are getting wet. who are sitting here | :22:36. | :22:40.
at the Norwich Garden Show. in Cambridge found Mr Wood | :22:41. | :22:46.
and paid a ?2,000 deposit. summerhouse for her wedding day | :22:47. | :22:53.
It was made, the weather was nice, we were looking forward | :22:54. | :22:56.
on the lawn in the gazebo. friends, family were going to be out | :22:57. | :23:02.
That was going to be part of the celebrations. | :23:03. | :23:05.
Mr Wood took another ?6,000 from Marie's account and a week | :23:06. | :23:09.
It was really substandard. a gazebo arrived. | :23:10. | :23:15.
of the legs up with one hand. and my son picked one | :23:16. | :23:23.
been used before. and I think it probably had | :23:24. | :23:30.
Mr Wood agreed to replace the damaged gazebo and 24 hours | :23:31. | :23:32.
before the wedding, some workmen arrived with a different model. | :23:33. | :23:36.
Then, his excuse was, he hadn't got any octagonal shaped | :23:37. | :23:40.
ones, so would we have this round one? | :23:41. | :23:44.
half of the roof here. and then realised they had only got | :23:45. | :23:51.
bits and pieces. missing and some other | :23:52. | :23:56.
The heater, the fridge, bits and pieces were missing. | :23:57. | :23:59.
So they went away, left all the tools, things scattered | :24:00. | :24:02.
Friday morning. they would be back first thing | :24:03. | :24:07.
Bear in mind, we were getting married Friday afternoon. | :24:08. | :24:10.
No one did ever turn up. We went off and got married. | :24:11. | :24:14.
We didn't have a gazebo for the wedding and at that point, | :24:15. | :24:17.
we were thinking, we are ?8,500 out of pocket. | :24:18. | :24:22.
from the credit card company. did get their money back - | :24:23. | :24:29.
Mr Wood said to us that Marie was clearly unhappy and he offered | :24:30. | :24:32.
her a replacement. and that he had found | :24:33. | :24:41.
heard nothing since. the whole order and that he has | :24:42. | :24:49.
So, plenty of allegations of poor quality goods for loads of money. | :24:50. | :24:53.
Some people don't get any furniture and they still end up in court. | :24:54. | :24:57.
Cheryl Squibb runs a home furnishing and carpet business. | :24:58. | :25:10.
for the whole family to relax in. cash on a nice summerhouse | :25:11. | :25:19.
She was looking for something like this but the ones being offered | :25:20. | :25:22.
by Hampshire Garden Furniture came with a big discount. | :25:23. | :25:26.
I just wanted to know a little bit more about them, I was advised | :25:27. | :25:30.
a site survey would be done to confirm that I could have one. | :25:31. | :25:34.
After the show, there was bad news. to have the survey and to secure | :25:35. | :25:44.
Cheryl's grandson was taken seriously ill with meningitis. | :25:45. | :25:48.
Understandably, her priorities changed. | :25:49. | :25:51.
I cancelled the appointment on the proviso that I would re-book. | :25:52. | :25:54.
But in all honesty, my brain was all over the place, | :25:55. | :25:58.
What happened next? the news we had been given. | :25:59. | :26:06.
I received a letter from Mr Wood saying that I had signed a contract, | :26:07. | :26:09.
wanted his payment. it was on its way and he | :26:10. | :26:17.
But despite her protests, Cheryl ended up in court, | :26:18. | :26:21.
signed by Cheryl. ordered document apparently | :26:22. | :26:28.
How do you think your signature is on an order and invoice document? | :26:29. | :26:31.
my knowledge at all. but it was done without | :26:32. | :26:36.
I have done nothing wrong, I work for every penny I have got. | :26:37. | :26:40.
I built my own business over ten years and have | :26:41. | :26:42.
gone without everything. Now I am having to pay this man. | :26:43. | :26:48.
We have spoken to a number of people who told us the same story, | :26:49. | :26:52.
that they thought they were signing up to guarantee a trade show | :26:53. | :26:56.
couldn't get out of. it was a contract they | :26:57. | :27:01.
Mr Wood told us he didn't believe anyone would sign an order | :27:02. | :27:04.
by mistake and said he was obliged to take people to court | :27:05. | :27:07.
because these were bespoke items, difficult to resell. | :27:08. | :27:11.
This is our first day and this is the only one for 4,000 anywhere. | :27:12. | :27:17.
Actually, he offers this discount at every show. | :27:18. | :27:22.
Mr Wood didn't want to be interviewed for the programme | :27:23. | :27:26.
about the unhappy customers left in his wake who claimed | :27:27. | :27:30.
they were either misled about what they were signing up for, | :27:31. | :27:33.
or who had received the wrong items, damaged goods or nothing at all. | :27:34. | :27:40.
years and had good reason to do so. people to court over the last ten | :27:41. | :27:47.
We have talked to similar businesses, the same size | :27:48. | :27:50.
as Mr Wood's who say they have never taken legal action against anyone. | :27:51. | :27:53.
