Freezing and living on the street. | 0:00:02 | 0:00:06
There was one in the next shelter
who was brought out in a shelter. He | 0:00:13 | 0:00:17
froze? Yes. | 0:00:17 | 0:00:20
Where s the dough? | 0:00:20 | 0:00:21
A special delivery for
the bakery owner accused | 0:00:21 | 0:00:23
of not paying his staff. | 0:00:23 | 0:00:25
We d like to give
you the opportunity to answer some | 0:00:25 | 0:00:27
questions. | 0:00:27 | 0:00:28
They ve baked a cake for you too. | 0:00:28 | 0:00:33
It's an uphill challenge
but can Billy make it? | 0:00:33 | 0:00:37
Kate Grey challenges
one boy to get active. | 0:00:37 | 0:00:42
Welcome to tonight s
Inside Out West. | 0:00:42 | 0:00:48
If you re lucky enough to be
in a nice warm bed tonight, | 0:00:58 | 0:01:01
spare a thought for the growing army
of people sleeping rough | 0:01:01 | 0:01:04
on pavements and in doorways. | 0:01:04 | 0:01:07
Here in Weston it's already
freezing ? just think | 0:01:07 | 0:01:11
what it ll be like later on. | 0:01:11 | 0:01:17
We ve got a noticeably cold night
ahead across North Somerset. | 0:01:24 | 0:01:26
We ll find even on the coastal
fringes temperatures dropping | 0:01:26 | 0:01:29
to freezing or -1 and there may well
be some fog around as well. | 0:01:29 | 0:01:32
I m heading to Weston super Mare
to spend a night on the streets. | 0:01:32 | 0:01:35
It's one of many
places in our region | 0:01:35 | 0:01:37
where there are visibly more | 0:01:37 | 0:01:39
homeless people ? we ll know exactly
how bad the situation | 0:01:39 | 0:01:42
is when the latest
rough sleeper figures | 0:01:42 | 0:01:44
are published later this week. | 0:01:44 | 0:01:47
And while we might all walk | 0:01:47 | 0:01:49
past homeless people -
how many of us ever really | 0:01:49 | 0:01:52
think about what it s like to be
on the streets at night. | 0:01:52 | 0:01:58
He was brought out
on the stretcher - he was gone. | 0:01:58 | 0:02:00
He froze? | 0:02:00 | 0:02:02
Yep ? he froze yeah ?
during the night ? hypothermia. | 0:02:02 | 0:02:07
Nothing could prepare me
for what to expect. | 0:02:07 | 0:02:10
I don t know how long til
sunrise but this is really, really, | 0:02:10 | 0:02:13
really near impossible ?
it really is. | 0:02:13 | 0:02:16
I don t know how they do it. | 0:02:16 | 0:02:20
Could I make it to the morning?! | 0:02:20 | 0:02:29
It s just after 6 o clock
in the evening here in Weston super | 0:02:29 | 0:02:33
Mare and I m told it s not a great
place to be sleeping | 0:02:33 | 0:02:37
rough on the streets
because of the terrible, | 0:02:37 | 0:02:40
terrible temperatures. | 0:02:40 | 0:02:42
I have the luxury of actually
going home anytime I want | 0:02:42 | 0:02:45
to ? these guys don t. | 0:02:45 | 0:02:46
And in that Victorian
shelter just down the road | 0:02:46 | 0:02:49
there are a few of the guys
who are sleeping there ? I m just | 0:02:49 | 0:02:53
going to go and introduce myself. | 0:02:53 | 0:02:58
Hello, how are you? | 0:02:58 | 0:03:04
This shelter is being shared
by Steve, Martin and Kev. | 0:03:04 | 0:03:08
Kev, what s it like at night? | 0:03:08 | 0:03:11
Freezing. | 0:03:11 | 0:03:12
Is it? | 0:03:12 | 0:03:13 | |
Yeah ? we just have to manage, get
into the blankets and sleeping bags. | 0:03:13 | 0:03:19
How long you been doing this, Kev? | 0:03:19 | 0:03:23
7 months. | 0:03:23 | 0:03:25
7 months, 7 months ? in this? | 0:03:25 | 0:03:30
It s a familiar story ? Steve s been
sleeping rough in Weston | 0:03:30 | 0:03:34
for the past 9 months. | 0:03:34 | 0:03:37
What s it
like living like this? | 0:03:37 | 0:03:40
It s not very good but it s life
and you make it the best you can. | 0:03:40 | 0:03:45
It must feel like every day is this
horrible cycle you re in? | 0:03:45 | 0:03:49
I don t even wanna wake up some
mornings ? I just want it to end. | 0:03:49 | 0:03:57
Oh, gosh. | 0:03:57 | 0:04:01
I can t do it no more now ? I m
still trying but everyone says | 0:04:01 | 0:04:07
you can cope and you
can survive and yeah. | 0:04:07 | 0:04:12
Steve, Martin and Kev
are being helped by local people - | 0:04:12 | 0:04:18
who bring them hot drinks and food. | 0:04:18 | 0:04:23
Hi Liona, I m Seb. | 0:04:23 | 0:04:24
They ve also set up a Facebook page | 0:04:24 | 0:04:27
in the last few weeks ? to raise
awareness and encourage more | 0:04:27 | 0:04:29
people to offer support. | 0:04:29 | 0:04:30
Your name is? | 0:04:30 | 0:04:32
Joseph. | 0:04:32 | 0:04:33
Joseph ? hello ? you
helping these guys out? | 0:04:33 | 0:04:35
Yep ? I ve got warm food. | 0:04:35 | 0:04:38
Do you think this is a problem
that ll ever get resolved? | 0:04:38 | 0:04:46
They easily put things in to attract
people to Weston but then try | 0:04:46 | 0:04:49
and hide the other side of Weston,
and there s things they can do | 0:04:49 | 0:04:53
which I don t feel they do. | 0:04:53 | 0:04:56
Everyone deserves a chance to be
in a house and somewhere warm ? not | 0:04:56 | 0:05:02
out here in the cold. | 0:05:02 | 0:05:04
It really does upset
you doesn t it Joseph? | 0:05:04 | 0:05:06
Yeah ? it s not right. | 0:05:07 | 0:05:11
It s 8 o clock - the group meet
around this time each night ? before | 0:05:11 | 0:05:15
heading to different parts
of the town, taking | 0:05:15 | 0:05:17
supplies to those in need. | 0:05:17 | 0:05:24
There is no night shelter here ?
the closest is Bristol. | 0:05:24 | 0:05:28
North Somerset Council estimates
the number of rough sleepers in ths | 0:05:28 | 0:05:32
area as 7 but the volunteers
say it s much higher. | 0:05:32 | 0:05:37
We ve calculated
there s about 20 or 30 | 0:05:37 | 0:05:39
of them sleeping rough. | 0:05:39 | 0:05:40
As high as that? | 0:05:40 | 0:05:41
Yes, yes. | 0:05:41 | 0:05:43
So what have they got
wrong that you ve seen? | 0:05:43 | 0:05:47
We re just going out having a search
and finding em more ? they are just | 0:05:47 | 0:05:51
waiting for them to go
in the council office. | 0:05:51 | 0:05:53
But it can be daunting
for them to go in that | 0:05:53 | 0:05:56
council office sometimes. | 0:05:56 | 0:05:58
It needs sorting now. | 0:05:58 | 0:06:05
As Val takes me around the high
street and boulevard, I m amazed | 0:06:05 | 0:06:09
to see there s even someone sleeping
outside the council offices. | 0:06:09 | 0:06:19
Hiya, you alright? | 0:06:20 | 0:06:27
In the few hours we spend
walking around ? we see | 0:06:27 | 0:06:30
about 10 rough sleepers,
in just a very small area. | 0:06:30 | 0:06:40
It s coming up to midnight
or so ? I ve just left | 0:06:43 | 0:06:46
Val in the town centre. | 0:06:46 | 0:06:47
I m heading down to the Victorian
shelter where Kevin, | 0:06:47 | 0:06:51
Martin and Steve are setting down
for the night ? I ll be | 0:06:51 | 0:06:54
sleeping over there. | 0:06:54 | 0:06:56
I ve just got to hope I can make it
through the night ? that s all. | 0:06:56 | 0:07:03
When I get back Steve is struggling
because of the cold. | 0:07:03 | 0:07:10
You need to cover
yourself up my friend. | 0:07:10 | 0:07:15
Tell me about your old life
Steve ? what was it like? | 0:07:15 | 0:07:18
It was OK to start off with ?
I was married and had kids. | 0:07:18 | 0:07:21
You were married. | 0:07:21 | 0:07:23
How long were you married for? | 0:07:23 | 0:07:25
10 years. | 0:07:25 | 0:07:29
Do your kids keep in touch? | 0:07:29 | 0:07:30
No, I never see my kids. | 0:07:30 | 0:07:34
Do they know you re here? | 0:07:34 | 0:07:36
No. | 0:07:36 | 0:07:38 | |
Do you miss them? | 0:07:38 | 0:07:39
Yeah. | 0:07:39 | 0:07:41 | |
Do you think about your old life? | 0:07:41 | 0:07:43
Yeah course, every time
I always see my children. | 0:07:43 | 0:07:47
Do you? | 0:07:47 | 0:07:49
Yeah in my mind. | 0:07:49 | 0:07:54
Steve I don t know how
you do this ? it s, it s | 0:07:54 | 0:07:57
seriously, seriously cold. | 0:07:57 | 0:08:02
I m not too bad now I m in this
sleeping bag ? it s like I m living | 0:08:02 | 0:08:08
back in a house again in my bed. | 0:08:08 | 0:08:11
Is that how you picture it? | 0:08:11 | 0:08:14
Yeah ? this is my home ?
if I could rent this off the council | 0:08:14 | 0:08:19
I d rent it and block it all off
and put a door there | 0:08:19 | 0:08:24
so I could shut it all off
and have my own little space. | 0:08:24 | 0:08:34
At around 2am I attempt
to settle down. | 0:08:34 | 0:08:43
This is the only way
I can keep warm. | 0:08:43 | 0:08:53
This is, this is freezing. | 0:08:54 | 0:09:03
No matter how hard I try,
I just can t get to sleep. | 0:09:13 | 0:09:23
It s about 4:30
at the moment ? it s impossible, | 0:09:27 | 0:09:31
absolutely impossible. | 0:09:31 | 0:09:33
I ve got so many layers on but it s
just getting colder and colder ? | 0:09:33 | 0:09:39
I think it s about 4
just getting colder and colder ? | 0:09:39 | 0:09:46
Some of those guys in there have
terrible coughs and they ve been | 0:09:46 | 0:09:50
coughing all night ? it s absolutely
freezing, it s near | 0:09:50 | 0:09:53
impossible to survive this. | 0:09:53 | 0:10:00
I m going to go back
in there and try and sleep | 0:10:00 | 0:10:02
a little bit, at least. | 0:10:02 | 0:10:05
The number of rough sleepers
across the region has almost | 0:10:05 | 0:10:08
doubled in last four 4 years. | 0:10:08 | 0:10:12
When it gets below freezing for more
than three 3 nights on the trot, | 0:10:12 | 0:10:15
emergency accommodation should be
offered to anyone forced | 0:10:15 | 0:10:18
to sleep outside. | 0:10:18 | 0:10:21
One of the reasons is to try
and prevent deaths. | 0:10:21 | 0:10:24
But we ve been told in the last year
alone at least 15 people have | 0:10:24 | 0:10:27
died on the streets. | 0:10:27 | 0:10:33
So it s 6:50 ? most of the time
there was freezing fog | 0:10:33 | 0:10:36
around. | 0:10:36 | 0:10:37
I ll show you on top of the car. | 0:10:37 | 0:10:40
Look at that ? that s
a lot of frost there! | 0:10:40 | 0:10:44
It s not just me who s
had trouble tonight. | 0:10:44 | 0:10:46
Even for Martin who is used | 0:10:47 | 0:10:49
to this ?sleeping in these
conditions is a struggle? | 0:10:49 | 0:10:52
You OK, Martin ? how was the night? | 0:10:52 | 0:10:56
Cold ? that s just a mild
night last night, not | 0:10:56 | 0:11:01
as cold as it normally is. | 0:11:01 | 0:11:07
Martin, there s a few guys who died
recently isn t there? | 0:11:07 | 0:11:11
Yeah, there was one just
up that shelter there. | 0:11:11 | 0:11:16
He was brought out on the stretcher. | 0:11:16 | 0:11:18
He was gone. | 0:11:18 | 0:11:19
He froze? | 0:11:19 | 0:11:21
Yep ? he froze ? during the night ?
hypothermia I think. | 0:11:21 | 0:11:26
That must be scary? | 0:11:26 | 0:11:29
Yeah it is, but you ve got to brave
it out because I ve got no choice. | 0:11:29 | 0:11:39
I m too old for all this. | 0:11:48 | 0:11:49
I need help with my drink
cos I m an alcoholic. | 0:11:49 | 0:11:52
I need help with my eyesight ?
to try and get my eyesight back | 0:11:52 | 0:11:55
so I can see what I m doing ?
I don t wanna live | 0:11:55 | 0:11:58
like this no more. | 0:11:58 | 0:12:04
For me, luckily this
was just one night. | 0:12:05 | 0:12:11
See you, boys. | 0:12:11 | 0:12:19
It was really difficult | 0:12:19 | 0:12:20
to say goodbye to Steve and Martin. | 0:12:20 | 0:12:24
I ve really bonded with them ? I ve
been here for 14 hours and I ve | 0:12:24 | 0:12:27
really got to know them. | 0:12:27 | 0:12:29
Spent the night in that
shelter over there. | 0:12:29 | 0:12:32
It was really difficult, | 0:12:32 | 0:12:34
It s stressful when you don t know
who might just creep up on you. | 0:12:34 | 0:12:38
And what struck me is how quickly
you can just lose morale ? you know | 0:12:38 | 0:12:43
and because of the cold and intense
hopelessness, you can | 0:12:43 | 0:12:50
just lose the will to do
anything the next day. | 0:12:50 | 0:12:54
It s a very, very,
very sad situation. | 0:12:54 | 0:13:00
What happened to those three after
we stopped filming? We kept in touch | 0:13:12 | 0:13:16
and they are OK. Thriving. Just glad
the weather is mild this week. Don't | 0:13:16 | 0:13:22
forgot to e-mail me with your
stories. Plenty more on Facebook and | 0:13:22 | 0:13:30
Twitter. | 0:13:30 | 0:13:33
An honest loaf ?
wholesome and reassuring. | 0:13:34 | 0:13:38
But for staff at bakeries
we ve been hearing about, | 0:13:38 | 0:13:40
life s been anything but. | 0:13:40 | 0:13:43
Carys Edwards has
been investigating. | 0:13:43 | 0:13:49
Endacotts ? one of
Britain s oldest bakeries. | 0:13:49 | 0:13:53
They ve been mixing it
up here in Okehampton | 0:13:53 | 0:13:55
for more than a century
But recently, frustration has been | 0:13:55 | 0:13:58
rising faster than the dough. | 0:13:58 | 0:14:02
When you work for a month expecting
to get paid and then you don't | 0:14:02 | 0:14:08
and you're still anticipating
being paid and you're sat | 0:14:08 | 0:14:12
here thinking, right perhaps
it will come tomorrow. | 0:14:12 | 0:14:14
Perhaps it will, perhaps it won't. | 0:14:14 | 0:14:22
Even vital supplies such as flour,
they say, are in short supply. | 0:14:22 | 0:14:25
We're all trying to keep
it going at the moment | 0:14:25 | 0:14:27
to see how long it will last
but we all know it's | 0:14:27 | 0:14:30
going to have to go. | 0:14:30 | 0:14:31
This is the owner of
Endacotts, Nicholas Gould. | 0:14:31 | 0:14:34
He runs an assortment
of cafes and bakeries | 0:14:34 | 0:14:37
from his house in Somerset. | 0:14:37 | 0:14:39
Since he took over Endacotts
in Devon last year, | 0:14:39 | 0:14:41
staff say things have been
hopelessly half-baked | 0:14:41 | 0:14:45
Has this ever happened
to you before? | 0:14:45 | 0:14:47
No. | 0:14:47 | 0:14:49 | |
It's been my life in here. | 0:14:49 | 0:14:50
Never happened. | 0:14:50 | 0:14:52
Never owed money to anyone. | 0:14:52 | 0:14:53
Now I'm starting
to owe people money. | 0:14:53 | 0:15:00
We ve evidence of problems at other
businesses Mr Gould has bought | 0:15:00 | 0:15:02
in the last few years. | 0:15:02 | 0:15:03
Urban Brunch in Yeovil seems
to have closed down. | 0:15:03 | 0:15:06
And Mr Gould bought
the Oven Door Bakery | 0:15:06 | 0:15:09
in the Hampshire village
of Fair Oak in June 2016. | 0:15:09 | 0:15:12
It s been closed since November,
apparently for refurbishment. | 0:15:12 | 0:15:22
Ray Norton has been
a baker for 43 years. | 0:15:35 | 0:15:37
For the last ten of those
he ran the confectionary | 0:15:37 | 0:15:40
department at The Oven Door. | 0:15:40 | 0:15:47
Ray was suspended on
full pay last August. | 0:15:47 | 0:15:49
He s sent recorded letters
and emails to Nick Gould and has | 0:15:49 | 0:15:52
heard nothing back -
so he s going to tribunal. | 0:15:52 | 0:15:55
I won t give up,
because it s unjust. | 0:15:55 | 0:15:59
And basically you can t just ruin
people s lives and put em on hold. | 0:15:59 | 0:16:04
Donna Gingell served customers | 0:16:04 | 0:16:06
at The Oven Door for four years. | 0:16:06 | 0:16:11
Donna says the problems started
when Nick Gould took over. | 0:16:11 | 0:16:14
In October, she wasn t paid. | 0:16:14 | 0:16:15
I had to beg him to actually put
money in my account. | 0:16:15 | 0:16:18
I had no money for food. | 0:16:18 | 0:16:19
No money for electric. | 0:16:19 | 0:16:21
No money to pay the rent. | 0:16:21 | 0:16:22
I m a single mum. | 0:16:22 | 0:16:23
And that was my only my only income. | 0:16:23 | 0:16:27
Mr Gould eventually paid
Donna some of her wages. | 0:16:27 | 0:16:33
So why have things soured so badly? | 0:16:33 | 0:16:35
We contacted Mr Gould to find out. | 0:16:35 | 0:16:37
He said he had been dealing
with a number of issues at Endacotts | 0:16:37 | 0:16:40
including two break-ins
and problems with admin. | 0:16:40 | 0:16:43
He said he had appointed
a new manager who would add focus | 0:16:43 | 0:16:46
and direction to the business. | 0:16:46 | 0:16:56
Mr Gould told us he wouldn t comment
further because of what he described | 0:16:58 | 0:17:01
as live legal cases. | 0:17:01 | 0:17:03
With other staff worried they re
going to be on the breadline, | 0:17:03 | 0:17:05
we wanted to give Mr Gould a final
chance to chew it all over with us. | 0:17:05 | 0:17:09
But first I went to see
Joy Whittington at the West Camel | 0:17:09 | 0:17:12
Bakery near Yeovil. | 0:17:12 | 0:17:13
Joy says she s owed £500 for bread
she supplied to Mr Gould last May. | 0:17:13 | 0:17:16
We ve written, we ve begged
and we ve asked and he s not replied | 0:17:16 | 0:17:19
to any of our correspondence. | 0:17:19 | 0:17:21
I m disgusted with him
really that he won t make | 0:17:21 | 0:17:25
any provision to pay. | 0:17:25 | 0:17:30
Joy s decided to let her
talent do the talking. | 0:17:30 | 0:17:33
She s baked a showstopper
for Mr Gould. | 0:17:33 | 0:17:40
if he s that hard up
he obviously needs to eat and | 0:17:40 | 0:17:42
you ve written on it? | 0:17:42 | 0:17:44
Yes, where s our dough,
and it s not just me, it s the dough | 0:17:44 | 0:17:47
for everyone that he owes. | 0:17:47 | 0:17:51
One cake, special delivery. | 0:17:51 | 0:18:01
There is a question. Don't do that,
this is such a bad form. We would | 0:18:06 | 0:18:16
like you to answer questions from
your staff. They have baked a cake | 0:18:16 | 0:18:19
for you which asks where the money
might be. | 0:18:19 | 0:18:29
They can only hope Mr Gould might
finally digest their message. | 0:18:29 | 0:18:33
Where is the money that
you owe all these people? | 0:18:33 | 0:18:36
Why can you not pay it or explain
why you are not paying it? | 0:18:36 | 0:18:39
Man up and pay your bills. | 0:18:40 | 0:18:49
You also know that it just isn't
that easy to lose weight. We | 0:18:56 | 0:19:00
challenged nine-year-old Billy and
his family to get active with some | 0:19:00 | 0:19:03
expert help. | 0:19:03 | 0:19:05
This is Billy, he s 9. | 0:19:11 | 0:19:13
He s about to take on his
first ever park run. | 0:19:13 | 0:19:19
I'm feeling excited about it. It
will be my first copper run without | 0:19:23 | 0:19:28
stopping. | 0:19:28 | 0:19:29
It s a tough course ?
5km through the hilly | 0:19:29 | 0:19:31
Ashton Court Estate
but the run isn t Billy s | 0:19:31 | 0:19:34
greatest challenge today. | 0:19:34 | 0:19:36
He has a visual impairment. | 0:19:36 | 0:19:38
It means he can t do this
on his own, he needs a guide. | 0:19:38 | 0:19:42
And even though it s my first park
run as well, I ll be | 0:19:42 | 0:19:45
helping him round the course. | 0:19:45 | 0:19:47
So why are we putting
Billy through this? | 0:19:47 | 0:19:50
It s all about being active. | 0:19:50 | 0:19:52
We know
exercise is good for our physical | 0:19:52 | 0:19:54
and emotional well-being -
but we re doing less and less. | 0:19:54 | 0:20:00
And it s all too easy to find
excuses to avoid doing any. | 0:20:00 | 0:20:04
And that habit starts early ? less
than a third of 2 to 15-year-olds do | 0:20:09 | 0:20:12
the recommended amount of exercise ? | 0:20:12 | 0:20:15
and by age 11, a third of pupils | 0:20:15 | 0:20:16
are already overweight. | 0:20:16 | 0:20:20
So to challenge that,
the BBC have joined up | 0:20:20 | 0:20:23
with the Premier League to create
Supermovers ? a two-year project | 0:20:23 | 0:20:26
for primary schools to encourage
children to get more active every | 0:20:26 | 0:20:28
day. | 0:20:29 | 0:20:32 | |
Although Billy is happily very
active - his eye condition means | 0:20:33 | 0:20:36
it s going to get harder and harder
for him to play sport | 0:20:36 | 0:20:39
in the future. | 0:20:39 | 0:20:41
I find it hard if people
are trying to pass to me from a long | 0:20:41 | 0:20:45
way out and it s usually quite
fast-moving so that s | 0:20:45 | 0:20:51
also a bit tricky too. | 0:20:51 | 0:20:53
His condition means
that he can t focus on objects. | 0:20:53 | 0:20:58
My eyes are constantly moving from
side to side and then things start | 0:21:04 | 0:21:07
shaking. I read on my Kindle because
usually books are too small for me | 0:21:07 | 0:21:12
to see. | 0:21:12 | 0:21:13
His eyes are very sensitive
in bright light so he wears | 0:21:13 | 0:21:16
dark glasses outdoors -
and he has poor depth perception. | 0:21:16 | 0:21:19
I have trouble with seeing how deep
steps are and things like that and | 0:21:23 | 0:21:28
little bumps on the road. Especially
when it is my time as well because I | 0:21:28 | 0:21:33
don't have good night-time vision. | 0:21:33 | 0:21:36
Having a disability means
it can be tough to learn | 0:21:36 | 0:21:38
new skills and sports. | 0:21:38 | 0:21:39
I lost my hand, when I was just two
- and when I first started swimming | 0:21:39 | 0:21:43
I was rubbish at it,
but my determination paid off | 0:21:43 | 0:21:46
and I managed to make it
all the way to competing | 0:21:46 | 0:21:48
in the 2008 Paralympics. | 0:21:48 | 0:21:52
I want everyone to be more active ?
it s always been my life ? got | 0:21:52 | 0:21:56
so much out of my sport ? having
a disability never held me back ? | 0:21:56 | 0:22:01
still found it difficult sometimes
to get motivated even though I knew | 0:22:01 | 0:22:05
how important it was to me. | 0:22:05 | 0:22:09
Billy s parents aren t
going to allow his disability | 0:22:09 | 0:22:11
to force him into giving up sport. | 0:22:11 | 0:22:14
He loves absolutely every sport. He
is looking into running as something | 0:22:19 | 0:22:26
he could get into. We have met up
with Colin. As we run, I will give | 0:22:26 | 0:22:32
you instructions about what the
circus is like. Is it rough or | 0:22:32 | 0:22:36
smooth, are we going up and down?
How do you feel about using the | 0:22:36 | 0:22:41
tether? I am quite confident with
it. Maybe we will give it a go and | 0:22:41 | 0:22:45
do some running. | 0:22:45 | 0:22:51
That's it. Move your arms around to
the right. Three, two, one. That's | 0:22:53 | 0:23:05
brilliant. Excellent. Really good,
how you feeling? OK. | 0:23:05 | 0:23:08
Colin makes it look easy. | 0:23:08 | 0:23:09
It s not. | 0:23:09 | 0:23:10
And if I m going to guide Billy
round the park run I m | 0:23:10 | 0:23:13
going to have to learn fast. | 0:23:13 | 0:23:22
It's tough, isn't it? It's preparing
ahead. Imagine a big crowd of people | 0:23:22 | 0:23:29
you will be running with. There are
two year left? Where. Then, then! | 0:23:29 | 0:23:42
You have to be aware of everything
around and not get distracted. It is | 0:23:42 | 0:23:49
easy to get distracted and forget
you have got to tell him what to do | 0:23:49 | 0:23:54
and what not to do and they are
listening for every world. | 0:23:54 | 0:23:57
And it s not just | 0:23:57 | 0:23:58
physical well-being which makes | 0:23:58 | 0:23:59
being active such a crucial part
of our lives. | 0:23:59 | 0:24:02
There are psychological benefits. It
leads to feelings of happiness and | 0:24:05 | 0:24:11
well-being and is evidence that
being physically active helps | 0:24:11 | 0:24:13
children attain better rates in
school. How important is the family | 0:24:13 | 0:24:21
experience? Families are really
important. The more they can do to | 0:24:21 | 0:24:24
support their children's activity,
not being active with them, but | 0:24:24 | 0:24:28
doing things that can encourage them
by taking them places, coming up | 0:24:28 | 0:24:32
with new ideas and supporting them,
that can really help their physical | 0:24:32 | 0:24:36
activity, too. | 0:24:36 | 0:24:38
And Billy s family
are right behind him. | 0:24:38 | 0:24:40
I took up running years ago when I
had a football injury. I had a | 0:24:44 | 0:24:50
mental breakdown at the same time as
my dad passed away. I went into a | 0:24:50 | 0:24:56
clinical depression and running
really helped me get out of it. I | 0:24:56 | 0:24:59
have been running ever since. I
would recommend it to anyone | 0:24:59 | 0:25:01
struggling with depression, Italy
helped me. I've done two runs trying | 0:25:01 | 0:25:09
to get myself on the fitness and I
am finding it is helping me, it has | 0:25:09 | 0:25:15
given me the push of a have to do it
because I have a really fit family | 0:25:15 | 0:25:19
and I'm not! I want to be able to
keep up with them! | 0:25:19 | 0:25:23
It s just a couple of weeks
before the parkrun. | 0:25:23 | 0:25:26
Billy s dad is in charge of training
- but there s been a setback. | 0:25:26 | 0:25:29
What scares me about the run is
there are quite big hills and I | 0:25:34 | 0:25:37
don't like running up them. | 0:25:37 | 0:25:42
If Billy s feeling a bit
nervous about the run, | 0:25:42 | 0:25:45
he might take inspiration from other
visually impaired runners - | 0:25:45 | 0:25:48
like Tracy who lost her
sight 27 years ago. | 0:25:48 | 0:25:55
I couldn't get over losing my sight
and I basically stayed in. It's only | 0:25:56 | 0:26:01
been the last three years that I
have come out and started mingling. | 0:26:01 | 0:26:03
I just shut myself off from everyone
and everything. That first real | 0:26:03 | 0:26:09
positive experience was getting
involved with a running club? Yes, | 0:26:09 | 0:26:14
it was a sense of freedom. Worries
went out the door. Thinking about | 0:26:14 | 0:26:22
Billy, how important is it to make
sure children at a young age are | 0:26:22 | 0:26:25
getting positive experience? I think
it's an important for Billy to meet | 0:26:25 | 0:26:31
with people like myself who can give
him some ideas of the kind of sport | 0:26:31 | 0:26:36
that he could be involved in now and
indeed in later life. Do you have | 0:26:36 | 0:26:42
aspirations to play football? Yes.
We need to have a little chat! | 0:26:42 | 0:26:48
It s time to put my new-found
guiding skills to the test. | 0:26:48 | 0:26:56
Over 300 people have
braved the cold to tackle | 0:27:05 | 0:27:08
the hills of Ashton Court. | 0:27:08 | 0:27:11
How you feeling? Good. What's the
plan for the rest of the race? The | 0:27:16 | 0:27:20
same pace. Not to go too fast. | 0:27:20 | 0:27:33
43 and a half minutes
later, it s all over. | 0:27:36 | 0:27:42
The last bit going up that Hill, the
bad bid. The best bit? Sprinting to | 0:27:51 | 0:27:56
the finish. I do know where that
energy came from? I chipped over a | 0:27:56 | 0:28:03
stone. That was probably because we
were having a chat! | 0:28:03 | 0:28:07
Thanks to Billy, his whole family
is getting the supermovers bug. | 0:28:07 | 0:28:09
Will you do it again? | 0:28:09 | 0:28:11
I'd only just started running but I
think it's a great opportunity for | 0:28:16 | 0:28:19
me to get out more and to get more
fit and healthy. | 0:28:19 | 0:28:29
Well, if Billy s inspired
you check out this link | 0:28:29 | 0:28:31
www.bbc.co.uk/supermovers
for lots of tips on how to get | 0:28:31 | 0:28:34
you and your family active. | 0:28:34 | 0:28:35
That s it for this week ? hope
you enjoyed the programme. | 0:28:35 | 0:28:38
Bye. | 0:28:38 | 0:28:40 | |
Coming up, George came within a
whisker of death but who would shoot | 0:28:46 | 0:28:50
a cat? None of us could believe it,
we still are very angry and upset. | 0:28:50 | 0:28:55
We didn't even know if he was going
to make it and it was totally | 0:28:55 | 0:28:58
heartbreaking to loss. | 0:28:58 | 0:29:01 |
