appeared to really wanted. If foreign fighters fuel the fire of | :00:04. | :00:10.
the conflict, the implications are far reaching. The Tonight on | :00:10. | :00:12.
Newsnight Scotland, are you considering taking up track | :00:12. | :00:20.
cycling? Or maybe showjumping? The Team GB medal glut may be inspiring | :00:20. | :00:24.
ideas of getting active or maybe even starting a new sport. But will | :00:24. | :00:27.
Olympics enthusiasm translate into a healthier nation or a new | :00:27. | :00:35.
generation of athletes? Good evening. Sitting on the sofa | :00:35. | :00:38.
agog at the televised feats of the world's athletes is about as active | :00:38. | :00:42.
as most of us will have got in the last week, but after every major | :00:42. | :00:46.
sporting event there is a surge in interest in participating in sport. | :00:46. | :00:49.
One of the declared aims of this Olympics, and indeed of the 2014 | :00:49. | :00:52.
Commonwealth Games, is a legacy of more sporting excellence amongst | :00:52. | :00:54.
elite athletes and greater participation amongst us mere | :00:54. | :01:00.
mortals. Jamie McIvor asks if they have any real chance of achieving | :01:00. | :01:10.
:01:10. | :01:14. | ||
that. It has been a spectacular few days for me Great Britain team. It | :01:14. | :01:19.
was made even sweeter for many Scots when Andy Murray defeated | :01:19. | :01:26.
Roger Federer to win gold in the tennis. But will this lead to a | :01:26. | :01:32.
real a legacy, a legacy of lasting sporting success, inspiring the | :01:32. | :01:42.
future generations? Boys like David and Angus play tennis regularly, | :01:42. | :01:46.
but what did they say to the friends who are not so keen on | :01:46. | :01:52.
playing sport. It is really fun and energetic and you get a lot of good | :01:52. | :01:56.
feeling playing sport. You get the rush of energy when you're doing | :01:56. | :02:00.
sport, even when you are not winning, is still a great | :02:00. | :02:08.
experience. It is just for the fun of it. It is not going to kill you | :02:08. | :02:18.
if you do not do it. It is just for fun. The sports complex when they | :02:18. | :02:27.
play will be one of the venues for the 2014 Commonwealth Games. On the | :02:27. | :02:35.
badminton court, up one of the British players plays here and one | :02:35. | :02:43.
of the other wants is doing the coaching. Jill Lee a man was a | :02:43. | :02:49.
member of the team in the 2000 Olympics. We are this good feeling | :02:49. | :02:55.
about the Olympics, it is important that we get as many people involved | :02:55. | :03:00.
in sport while it is going so well for the Great Britain team. People | :03:00. | :03:05.
want to play sport. You can see the courts are busy, the badminton | :03:05. | :03:11.
courts are busy, the tennis courts are busy. Big sporting events have | :03:11. | :03:16.
always tended to be youngsters excited for a few weeks, but the | :03:16. | :03:20.
challenge is to not maintain that momentum, so that the youngsters | :03:20. | :03:25.
will keep the sports up permanently or at least lead a healthier | :03:25. | :03:29.
lifestyle. The there are encouraging signs ahead of the | :03:29. | :03:34.
Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. There have been record attendances | :03:34. | :03:39.
and sports development programmes. That best way to encourage people | :03:39. | :03:44.
is to say that all these athletes out there were not born that way. | :03:44. | :03:50.
The all started somewhere. The message has come to come along and | :03:50. | :04:00.
:04:00. | :04:02. | ||
try it out. There is something for But some sports may not always be | :04:02. | :04:07.
so easy to get started and. Pride in the British rowing team is one | :04:07. | :04:15.
thing, but many youngsters do not get the chance to try it out. | :04:15. | :04:21.
the past, it may have been available to children as part of or | :04:21. | :04:25.
physical education curriculum. Scottish Rowing is trapped working | :04:25. | :04:31.
hard to push it back into the school curriculum and it is really | :04:31. | :04:34.
important that there is this link between schools and universities | :04:34. | :04:41.
and not just to rowing, but to all sports. We want kids to pick up | :04:41. | :04:48.
sport at school and then be able to take it on when he reached | :04:48. | :04:54.
university. The London Olympics are meant to have the legacy for the | :04:54. | :04:58.
whole of the United Kingdom, salt in the same way the Commonwealth | :04:58. | :05:04.
Games should have the legacy for their saw how can that happen? | :05:04. | :05:07.
Getting more children into sport and nurturing those who have the | :05:07. | :05:12.
potential to become world class. In a moment, I will speak to the | :05:12. | :05:15.
Sports Minister, but first I am joined in the studio by former | :05:15. | :05:18.
Olympic 400 metre runner Brian Whittle and from Dundee by the | :05:18. | :05:21.
former First Minister Henry McLeish, who has written a report into the | :05:21. | :05:31.
state of Scottish football. Henry, Scotland has done very well in | :05:31. | :05:36.
terms of Olympic medals. It is very it inspiring, but when the Games | :05:36. | :05:43.
come to an end, will there be much of a legacy for Scotland? A I think | :05:43. | :05:47.
there may well be. It has been incredible watching these athletes | :05:47. | :05:54.
achieving the success they have, but legacy is difficult to deliver. | :05:54. | :05:59.
From the children's perspective, you can see the point of sport been | :05:59. | :06:04.
fun, working with other people as a team. It is all about fitness, | :06:04. | :06:08.
health and well-being and when you consider all of these items, plus | :06:08. | :06:13.
the fact it is character-building and confidence building, frankly I | :06:13. | :06:18.
do not think the nation has a choice. We have to go forward. We | :06:18. | :06:22.
have to invest. But I think there is a real opportunity between the | :06:22. | :06:26.
Olympic Games closing and the Commonwealth Games opening in two | :06:26. | :06:31.
years' time, that we can make the progress continue that we have made | :06:31. | :06:37.
in the last few years. The success we have seen in sports that very | :06:37. | :06:43.
few people schoolchildren were Scottish kids will ever really | :06:43. | :06:53.
:06:53. | :06:53. | ||
participate and - rowing, canoeing, can a strained equestrian events. | :06:53. | :07:01.
There is no doubt that over half of the medals won have come from | :07:01. | :07:10.
people who went to private schools. We are not asking the schools to | :07:10. | :07:15.
pick these sports onto their curriculum, but there are a lot of | :07:15. | :07:19.
easier sports which could lead a more on that path to him more | :07:19. | :07:24.
healthy lifestyle. It is not hard to include netball, hockey, | :07:24. | :07:31.
athletics, swimming. We need to put these back in the curriculum and | :07:31. | :07:37.
Embedding sport back into our education system. Back is the | :07:37. | :07:41.
aspiration, but the problem is delivering that and making sure | :07:41. | :07:46.
that state schools for a the driver for sporting success. Arguably, the | :07:46. | :07:51.
are not doing that. Currently, I do not think they are doing that, but | :07:51. | :07:57.
I think they have this window between 2012 and 2014 where we | :07:57. | :08:01.
could get this right. I would like to see as taking a step back and | :08:01. | :08:05.
taking a look at this. I do not think we have got all the answers. | :08:05. | :08:09.
I think we have to start encouraging parents to get back | :08:09. | :08:16.
involved with their kids and extra curricular sport. We do not have | :08:16. | :08:21.
enough coaches and enough parents. For me, the first coach he could | :08:21. | :08:26.
will ever have is their parents. We have to encourage parents and the | :08:26. | :08:36.
back of the Olympic Games to get involved. We see the success of | :08:36. | :08:40.
people like Andy Murray, who have had a very supportive family to | :08:40. | :08:45.
drive them on to success. In the absence of that, what our schools | :08:45. | :08:53.
not doing right which are preventing or not doing what they | :08:53. | :09:00.
should be doing. They are has been a lot of talk about the great | :09:00. | :09:06.
British team, but it is more about Scotland. It is about teachers and | :09:06. | :09:12.
about schools. We have got a huge number of sports authorities | :09:12. | :09:17.
involved. If we can get this team approach together, we cannot | :09:17. | :09:20.
underestimate the fact that while sport is claiming the political | :09:20. | :09:26.
agenda, it is not as high as they should be. If I think there is also | :09:26. | :09:30.
a cultural problem. I hear that schools are about the mind. They | :09:30. | :09:38.
should be about the mind and the body. I can see a bright future as | :09:38. | :09:47.
long as me in bed and the culture to the young person and parent, | :09:47. | :09:53.
plus two there communities, when we look at the likes of obesity, be | :09:53. | :09:57.
know what we should be doing. I think the government are doing well, | :09:57. | :10:01.
but what they have to do is to bring all these people together and | :10:01. | :10:08.
make it seem Scotland as we work towards the Commonwealth Games. | :10:08. | :10:14.
What the needs to change? We have seen so many medals won by private | :10:14. | :10:18.
school pupils. What needs to happen in state schools for that to | :10:18. | :10:23.
change? I have talked about the school estates being opened up. | :10:23. | :10:28.
There are wonderful facilities lying dormant for much of the year. | :10:28. | :10:38.
:10:38. | :10:38. | ||
The other problem facing the likes of football... They have this is | :10:38. | :10:42.
about team Scotland, it means everybody. When it comes to | :10:42. | :10:45.
facilities and the likes of football, we are among the poorest | :10:46. | :10:55.
and football. -- the poorest in Europe. People cannot stand idly by | :10:55. | :11:00.
and just say it is the government's responsibility. It is all of our | :11:00. | :11:03.
responsibility to ensure that every child in Scotland may not be an | :11:04. | :11:11.
elite athlete and win medals, but they should have the opportunity to | :11:11. | :11:21.
:11:21. | :11:24. | ||
When you're in charge as First Minister we saw a deal that did not | :11:24. | :11:28.
require teachers to participate in school sports, would you like to | :11:28. | :11:34.
see that change? In the mid- 1980s when Margaret Thatcher was involved | :11:34. | :11:37.
and school teachers decided they had had enough of what happened, at | :11:37. | :11:41.
that point a lot of the interest went out of school sports. I think | :11:41. | :11:46.
we can get it back again. The government needs to make sure all | :11:46. | :11:50.
of the schools are responding. You cannot force people but after the | :11:50. | :11:54.
Olympics we can see the benefit of individual success and high | :11:54. | :12:00.
achievement. On the other hand, if you develop the base and a bigger | :12:00. | :12:05.
pool of talent then in the end we will win more medals in the British | :12:05. | :12:11.
team and in the Commonwealth Games. We will leave it there. Thank you | :12:11. | :12:19.
very much. Here are some of the defining | :12:19. | :12:24.
images of the Olympic Games so far which we will be seeing for quite | :12:24. | :12:34.
:12:34. | :12:49. | ||
some time. It's a fantastic silver medal for Great Britain. Michael | :12:49. | :12:58.
Jamieson what a performance that was. It's a golden triumph for Andy | :12:58. | :13:03.
Murray. I watch the athletics last night and it was amazing. It was | :13:03. | :13:13.
:13:13. | :13:14. | ||
just amazing the way Mo Farah one. The crowd are cheering him on. They | :13:14. | :13:21.
are into their home stretch. Has he got enough? He is kicking. It is | :13:21. | :13:31.
:13:31. | :13:33. | ||
going to be a gold. Mo Farrah! Its gold! I gave him my absolute all | :13:33. | :13:36.
and I am sorry that I did not get the gold for everyone who was | :13:36. | :13:42.
expecting me to. I am so proud and pleased to get eight bronze medal. | :13:42. | :13:51.
It is nothing to be embarrassed of. The pride of Sheffield, the pride | :13:51. | :13:56.
of Great Britain, Jessica Ennis is a her Olympic champion. Jessica | :13:56. | :14:06.
:14:06. | :14:18. | ||
For Great Britain, a new world I enjoyed now by Shona Robison who | :14:18. | :14:22.
has replaced Henry McLeish in Dundee. Thank you very much for | :14:22. | :14:27.
joining us. Inspiring scenes from many of us. What are you doing? | :14:27. | :14:31.
What concrete action are you taking to convert that sense of excitement | :14:31. | :14:35.
into something more permanent? First of all it was great to see | :14:35. | :14:40.
some of those inspiring scenes. Team GB has done so well and of | :14:40. | :14:44.
course within that the Scottish Olympians, I was working out before | :14:44. | :14:49.
we went on air that out of 54 Scottish athletes, one in six is | :14:49. | :14:54.
now way medalist which is tremendous. It is inspiring for a | :14:54. | :14:57.
potential new generation of athletes coming through. | :14:57. | :15:01.
Participation rates, if one child tries a sport that they have not | :15:01. | :15:06.
tried before and so many of the athletes to one have said that, | :15:06. | :15:10.
that is a really good message to young people. That is a great role | :15:10. | :15:13.
model that athletes should be promoting and so many of the mark, | :15:14. | :15:18.
it is good to see. Does it not worry you that we are so reliant in | :15:18. | :15:22.
Scotland on people from privileged backgrounds or people with | :15:22. | :15:25.
tremendous family support for our national success. Well, we are | :15:25. | :15:29.
working very hard to make sure that we break down the barriers so that | :15:29. | :15:34.
no matter what your background, if you're good at a sport, you can go | :15:34. | :15:38.
all the way. We are doing that in a variety of ways, increasing | :15:38. | :15:44.
investment in he, so we get the basics right. There is an active | :15:44. | :15:48.
schools network which is a massive success story. We are opening up | :15:48. | :15:52.
opportunities to children who might otherwise not have had them. We are | :15:52. | :15:58.
getting good schools' links. We are opening up clubs. I visited a high | :15:58. | :16:02.
school in Motherwell where they are converting 50% of their secondary | :16:02. | :16:06.
schools into community sports clubs and rowing is one of the sports | :16:06. | :16:10.
they are promoting. It takes a bit of time but I think we have the | :16:10. | :16:13.
building blocks are beginning to be in the right places, making sure | :16:14. | :16:17.
our governing bodies deliver on the participation in the sports as well | :16:17. | :16:22.
as performance. All of that takes a bit of time to come through but I | :16:22. | :16:26.
think the fact that we have had such success will help to clear | :16:26. | :16:33.
that up somewhat. It will certainly inspired kids. A lot of them are | :16:33. | :16:36.
going back to school in a few weeks so how many of them will still not | :16:36. | :16:40.
be getting the basic two hours of PE every week that they should be | :16:40. | :16:46.
getting? I am sure you followed the recent release of statistics on | :16:46. | :16:51.
that that showed over 80% of primary schools are delivering two | :16:51. | :16:55.
hours and over 90% of secondary schools are delivering two periods | :16:55. | :16:59.
and I am confident that by the time we get to the Commonwealth Games we | :16:59. | :17:04.
will have completed the journey on P E. He made that promise in 2007 | :17:04. | :17:11.
which was a long time ago. That target has been around since about | :17:11. | :17:19.
1993 or something ridiculous like that. I was determined to complete | :17:19. | :17:29.
that journey. It is just a part of the jigsaw. The active schools | :17:29. | :17:36.
network delivers huge opportunities. 10,000 volunteers back at Look | :17:36. | :17:41.
North. We have excellent links to make sure that the children can get | :17:42. | :17:46.
to the clubs to get even more reform -- performance in their | :17:46. | :17:51.
sports and that is beginning to happen. Is there a wider problem in | :17:51. | :17:56.
our state schools, are they embracing the sporting ethos of | :17:56. | :18:01.
competition and winning and losing? Some are and some are not. | :18:01. | :18:05.
Leadership is very important. I have been around so many schools | :18:05. | :18:08.
and what has struck me very forcibly is that way you have a | :18:08. | :18:14.
head teacher told resits the value of sport, for itself, and also the | :18:14. | :18:19.
academic value because we know that schools they give sport priority | :18:19. | :18:24.
get an academic benefit from it as well. Where there is that | :18:24. | :18:29.
leadership it really happens. you telling them to do it or is it | :18:29. | :18:34.
a voluntary thing? We are all pushing in the same direction. | :18:34. | :18:37.
There is a lot of encouragement around p and active schools. They | :18:37. | :18:42.
are all involved in that Met work. Sport Scotland is very much at its | :18:42. | :18:47.
heart and we have never had that joined-up thinking before. We are | :18:47. | :18:51.
making sure what is happening everywhere in every school. That is | :18:51. | :18:55.
what I want to see and that is my aim. You are currently, as a | :18:55. | :19:01.
government, reviewing a implementation of a deal that was | :19:01. | :19:06.
put in place to provide teachers with fair terms and conditions. Is | :19:06. | :19:11.
getting them to participate more in organising school sports something | :19:11. | :19:15.
that you would like to see as sports minister? A lot of teachers | :19:15. | :19:23.
are already very much involved in school sports. We have to do what | :19:23. | :19:26.
works and what is working really well... Would you like to see more | :19:27. | :19:31.
of them involved? Of course I would like to see more schools doing that | :19:31. | :19:36.
and we have to make sure that we do what works and what works is the | :19:36. | :19:40.
active schools network. Teachers and parents are supporting 5 | :19:40. | :19:45.
million sporting opportunities last year. That is a tremendous success | :19:45. | :19:48.
story. That is all voluntary, are you prepared to tell them that this | :19:48. | :19:52.
is what we want from the schools. There is nothing wrong with | :19:52. | :19:56.
voluntary effort from sport. Sport is based on voluntary effort and | :19:56. | :20:01.
all the hours people give. That enthusiasm from those teachers and | :20:01. | :20:08.
parents and coaches put across from -- to the kids is so important. | :20:09. | :20:11.
They must have a good experience when they turn us up the clubbers | :20:11. | :20:17.
so they are high -- so that is working. The success of that as we | :20:17. | :20:21.
get towards the Commonwealth Games in two years' time will be there | :20:21. | :20:26.
for all to save. The debate, like the Games, will continue. Thank you | :20:26. | :20:33.
very much indeed. That is it from me. A quick look at the papers. | :20:33. | :20:36. |
