:00:31.:00:41.

We'll be looking back at the career of Nicole Cooke from Wick.

:00:41.:00:45.

But as she announces her retirement...

:00:45.:01:02.

Good evening.

:01:02.:01:04.

April Jones' parents were in Mold Crown Court this morning...

:01:04.:01:08.

..and sat just a few yards from the man who's been charged...

:01:08.:01:12.

..with abducting and murdering their daughter.

:01:12.:01:14.

Mark Bridger denies the charges...

:01:14.:01:16.

..but the 47-year-old man from Machynlleth...

:01:16.:01:19.

..admits he was probably responsible for her death.

:01:19.:01:23.

Criag Duggan was in court this morning...

:01:23.:01:27.

..and joins us from Machynlleth tonight.

:01:27.:01:40.

Apart

Apart from

:01:40.:01:40.

Apart from the

:01:40.:01:49.

Apart from the security officers who sat with him in the dock, the

:01:49.:01:54.

parents of April Jones were quite close to Mark Bridger. They sat

:01:54.:02:06.

quietly throughout the hearing. Paul and Coral Jones sat for an

:02:06.:02:11.

hour just yards from the man charged with the murder of their

:02:11.:02:15.

daughter. Mark Bridger spoke in a clear voice as he pleaded not

:02:15.:02:30.

guilty to the three charges against him. -Of- April's parents listened

:02:30.:02:34.

to it all -- April's parents listened to it all and shed a few

:02:34.:02:41.

tears at time. On the first day of October last year she was last seen.

:02:41.:02:46.

During the hearing today Mark Bridger's barrister said he will

:02:47.:02:51.

say he was probably responsible for the death of April Jones but that

:02:51.:02:57.

he denies murdering her. There were no more details about that during

:02:57.:03:01.

the hearing this morning. Mark Bridger was remanded in custody and

:03:01.:03:06.

will return to Mold Crown Court for the start of the trial on 25th

:03:06.:03:12.

February. In Machynlleth the efforts to find April Jones

:03:12.:03:17.

continue. Police from over the border helped the police. It is now

:03:17.:03:22.

15 weeks since the five-year-old girl disappeared. It was obviously

:03:22.:03:29.

a very difficult and emotional day for the parents in court? Yes. It

:03:29.:03:32.

must have been another difficult day for them sitting so close to

:03:32.:03:38.

the dock as I was saying. Coral Jones was wearing a pink top and

:03:38.:03:44.

her dark suit. Pink was April's favourite colour and is a sign of

:03:44.:03:49.

the support in the community for the family. It will be a difficult

:03:49.:03:56.

time for the community as the trial begins in Mold. Mark Bridger's

:03:56.:04:01.

solicitor did ask for the trial to be moved away from Wales, but that

:04:01.:04:11.

was denied. The trial is likely to At Mold Crown Court today,

:04:11.:04:20.

..murdering Catherine Gowing, 46-year-old Clive Sharp

:04:20.:04:33.

In the hearing that lasted less than ten minutes, Clive Sharp

:04:33.:04:40.

admitted murdering Catherine Gowing. There were no further details about

:04:40.:04:43.

what happened. 36-year-old Catherine Gowing disappeared last

:04:43.:04:47.

October and was last seen by friends after a night out. She was

:04:47.:04:54.

then spotted on CCTV leaving a supermarket in Queensferry. Weeks

:04:54.:04:58.

later after a search in a nearby quarry parts of her body were

:04:58.:05:03.

discovered in the River Dee in Cheshire and also in the Sealand

:05:03.:05:08.

area in Flintshire. The police continued to search for other

:05:08.:05:10.

remains. Catherine Gowing was from Ireland but had been working as a

:05:10.:05:15.

vet in Mold for 18 months. During that time, she made quite an

:05:15.:05:25.

impression on her colleagues. was is a very dear girl. She was

:05:25.:05:29.

easy to get along with. She never argued with anybody and she loved

:05:29.:05:42.

her job. Everyone wanted to see her because she took care of their

:05:42.:05:59.

animals so well. It's been a very difficult time. After Clive Sharp

:05:59.:06:03.

pleaded guilty, the judge said there could only be one sentence,

:06:03.:06:07.

that of life imprisonment. However, the judge added he needed time to

:06:07.:06:11.

consider the terms of the sentence and asked for further information

:06:11.:06:15.

about the defendant's previous convictions. Clive Sharp will be

:06:15.:06:23.

A BBC Wales investigation has ..about the way one of Wales'

:06:23.:06:31.

The Joshua Foundation provides The accounts show that the charity

:06:31.:06:49.

One of the Joshua Foundation events before Christmas. The charity was

:06:49.:06:53.

established by Sarah Cornelius Price in memory of her son who died

:06:53.:06:59.

of cancer at the age of seven. It pays for holidays and a variety of

:06:59.:07:04.

special experiences for terminally- ill children. Publicly available

:07:04.:07:11.

accounts show the charity owes around 350,000 to HM Revenue and

:07:11.:07:23.

Customs and the debt has existed for almost ten years. I think when

:07:23.:07:25.

people contribute money to charities like the Joshua

:07:26.:07:30.

Foundation, they want the money to go to the children instead of

:07:30.:07:34.

paying the taxman. The charity insists that money donated by the

:07:34.:07:39.

public will not be used to pay the debt. Sarah Cornelius Price has

:07:39.:07:43.

admitted the debt resulted from Gift Aid that was mistakenly

:07:43.:07:47.

claimed. The Government allows charities to claim back 25 pence

:07:47.:07:53.

from HMRC for every 1 that is donated. However, Sarah Cornelius

:07:53.:07:59.

Price argues the rules are unclear. I think it was fair to say that it

:07:59.:08:03.

was very confusing in terms of the rules. A lot of charities did not

:08:03.:08:08.

know what they were doing. Revenue and Customs agrees and

:08:08.:08:12.

insists the rules are clear. Sarah Cornelius Price says the charity

:08:12.:08:15.

intends to sell off an asset to pay the debt but BBC Wales understands

:08:16.:08:20.

that this is a restricted asset donated to the charity for the

:08:20.:08:24.

benefit of children and that it can't be sold without consent from

:08:24.:08:32.

a court. For every 1 the Joshua Foundation receives 42 pence is

:08:32.:08:35.

spent on the children. Every charity spends its money in

:08:35.:08:39.

different ways. But this percentage is among the lowest we have come

:08:39.:08:50.

across. The Oz experience projects allows people to travel to

:08:50.:08:54.

Australia by collecting 3,000. Half of the money goes to the

:08:54.:08:57.

charity and half pays for the trip. The charity says this is the reason

:08:57.:09:03.

why the percentage is 42 pence in 1. There is concern about the way

:09:03.:09:13.

the charity is run. Two years ago, the charity paid 60,000 to a team

:09:14.:09:20.

of consultants to come in and look at the charity. Then you find out

:09:20.:09:27.

that this company was owned by the person that was running the charity.

:09:27.:09:31.

It's not illegal to make payments of this nature but experts have

:09:31.:09:35.

told BBC Wales that the arrangements at the Joshua

:09:35.:09:40.

Foundation are unusual. The charity says that Mrs Cornelius Price and

:09:41.:09:47.

her husband receive a salary. The experiences of the parents and

:09:47.:09:51.

children who receive help from the Joshua Foundation is beyond the

:09:51.:09:58.

comprehension of most. And that The Westminster Government has

:09:58.:10:05.

..to change the state pension and At the moment, the weekly

:10:05.:10:12.

However, some people receive over In four years, there will be one

:10:13.:10:19.

At the moment, you have to contribute...

:10:19.:10:23.

..to the National Insurance scheme for 30 years.

:10:23.:10:26.

That will increase to 35 years.

:10:26.:10:28.

Labour is warning that many people could be worse off...

:10:29.:10:33.

..and that was also the view in Bangor this afternoon.

:10:33.:10:42.

At

:10:42.:10:43.

At one

:10:43.:10:43.

At one time,

:10:43.:10:49.

At one time, there were a lot of people working. More people were

:10:49.:10:53.

working. Now the situation has changed. You've got people who have

:10:53.:10:57.

retired and people who aren't working, so it gets more difficult

:10:57.:11:03.

to finance. It's something to consider, but at the moment, I'm

:11:03.:11:07.

not considering it. Maybe I should be more concerned but it's not

:11:07.:11:14.

something I think about at the moment. The pensions expert Medwyn

:11:14.:11:21.

Edwards is in our Wrexham studio. The aim is to simplify but will the

:11:21.:11:26.

system do that? Yes, I think it will. At the moment, the system is

:11:26.:11:32.

quite complicated. If you are already retired, and you look at

:11:32.:11:38.

your pension, and the way it's distributed you will see there are

:11:38.:11:44.

lots of different parts to it. From 2017, there will be a flat pension

:11:44.:11:49.

of 144 a week for everybody. There's been a lot of discussion

:11:49.:11:55.

today already. Who will benefit from this and who will lose out?

:11:55.:11:59.

People who are self-employed don't get the second state pension at the

:11:59.:12:06.

moment and people who are on low incomes will benefit from 2017. For

:12:06.:12:13.

people who earn more money and who have the second state pension, they

:12:13.:12:22.

will be worse off. From 2015, everybody will be worse off. They

:12:22.:12:26.

will have to work longer for a pension. What about pensioners who

:12:26.:12:30.

are receiving their payments at the moment? Will they be affected?

:12:30.:12:35.

it won't make any difference to them. They will carry on as they

:12:35.:12:39.

are. And even the people who retire before 2017, the Government has

:12:39.:12:47.

promised there won't be a change to David Cameron will make a

:12:47.:12:55.

In an interview with ..the Prime Minister said he wanted

:12:55.:12:58.

..between Britain and Europe and suggested once again...

:12:58.:13:00.

..that the public would be given the opportunity...

:13:00.:13:02.

..to state their view in a referendum.

:13:02.:13:07.

The House of Lords has been discussing...

:13:07.:13:10.

..the Government's measure to reduce the number of MPs...

:13:10.:13:13.

..and ensure that every memberrepresents the same number of people.

:13:13.:13:17.

Wales would lose 10 MPs if the changes are implemented.

:13:17.:13:19.

However, there is disagreement within the Government itself...

:13:19.:13:22.

..with the Conservatives in favour and the Liberal Democrats against.

:13:22.:13:31.

The

:13:31.:13:31.

The Government

:13:31.:13:31.

The Government has

:13:31.:13:37.

The Government has lost the vote, but the members of the Government

:13:37.:13:45.

don't agree on this anyway. At the moment, Wales has 40 MPs

:13:45.:13:48.

representing areas which vary with regard to size and the number of

:13:48.:13:54.

voters. There are around 40,000 of them in Arfon, while in Cardiff

:13:54.:13:57.

South and Penarth the figure is almost twice that. The Government's

:13:57.:14:00.

measure would reduce the number of Welsh MPs to 30 and constituencies

:14:00.:14:03.

would be more equal with regard to the amount of people that vote in

:14:03.:14:10.

each one. There would be almost 75,000 voters in the Anglesey

:14:10.:14:15.

Bangor constituency. The number of MPs would drop to 600. Some

:14:15.:14:21.

politicians would be feeling uncomfortable but the MP for

:14:21.:14:24.

Aberconwy can see the argument for making the change. There are people

:14:25.:14:33.

who will be affected and I'm one of them. There is some disagreement

:14:33.:14:36.

but we accept this change means we will have a fairer system and a

:14:36.:14:43.

system which means the number of MPs who are voted in is closer to

:14:43.:14:53.

the percentage of people they represent. It's important that

:14:53.:14:57.

constituencies represent communities. If you have huge areas,

:14:57.:15:04.

it is very difficult where the problems and challenges are

:15:04.:15:08.

different for one MP to deal with it all. These two don't agree. Nick

:15:08.:15:11.

Clegg has said the Liberal Democrats are against the changes

:15:11.:15:19.

because of a dispute about changing the system in the House of Lords.

:15:19.:15:24.

The Lords said tonight that the changes need to be postponed, but

:15:24.:15:31.

Mr Cameron will want to go ahead whatever happens. We can join our

:15:31.:15:37.

parliamentary correspondent, who is at the House of Lords. What will

:15:37.:15:42.

happen as a result of this vote? The Government has lost a very

:15:43.:15:50.

important vote tonight. The Lords decided to postpone these changes.

:15:50.:15:54.

The Government will have the opportunity to vote on the issue in

:15:54.:15:57.

the House of Commons later in the month, but the mathematics aren't

:15:57.:16:02.

in favour of David Cameron. Nick Clegg says his members will vote

:16:02.:16:07.

against the idea as well as Labour. Plaid Cymru has said today it will

:16:07.:16:12.

vote against it as well. A blow for the coalition and personally for

:16:12.:16:18.

David Cameron? Yes, this is a heavy blow for David Cameron and his

:16:18.:16:25.

hopes of changing the system. He is determined to go ahead with it.

:16:25.:16:34.

It's also very important to his Eight men have been arrested on

It's time for the sports news now. Over to Iwan.

Today, Nicole Cooke from Wick...

:19:03.:19:05.

..announced her retirement from the sport.

She also revealed that she had been offered drugs during her career...

:19:09.:19:13.

..but that she had refused.

:19:13.:19:23.

Three

:19:23.:19:23.

Three months

:19:23.:19:23.

Three months before

:19:23.:19:30.

Three months before her 30th birthday, Nicole Cooke is retiring.

:19:30.:19:34.

The girl from the Vale of Glamorgan has achieved more than any other

:19:34.:19:38.

female cyclist of her generation. After a disappointing Olympic Games,

:19:39.:19:44.

today's announcement was not unexpected. I think it is time to

:19:44.:19:48.

bring to a close a fantastic career. It was more than I expected when I

:19:48.:19:56.

started off. At the age of 12, she combined training on the roads with

:19:56.:20:02.

her school work. She went on to win the British Championship ten times.

:20:02.:20:06.

In 2002, she won a gold medal for Wales at the Commonwealth Games

:20:06.:20:15.

before winning an Olympic gold medal in Beijing. However, Nicole

:20:15.:20:19.

Cooke revealed today that she had been offered performance-enhancing

:20:20.:20:25.

drugs before one important race but that she turned the offer down.

:20:25.:20:31.

part is being able to take a strong stand, but the other part, which

:20:31.:20:36.

doesn't often debt seen, is the bullying and the other things that

:20:36.:20:40.

happen afterwards. Nicole Cooke has been criticised for not pulling her

:20:40.:20:44.

weight, but those who know her well say she has always been determined

:20:44.:20:49.

and that is why she has been successful. It is easy to say she

:20:49.:20:54.

is the best because look at what she has done. She has won the

:20:54.:20:59.

Olympics. She won the World Championships in the same year.

:20:59.:21:04.

That is an incredible achievement. She has won everything in the sport.

:21:04.:21:07.

Nicole says she hopes she has inspired young people in Wales to

:21:08.:21:11.

do their best and aim for the top in whatever field they have talent

:21:11.:21:18.

The injuries are mounting ..and the position of second row

:21:18.:21:21.

The Blues lock, Bradley Davies, has had surgery on his ankle today.

:21:21.:21:24.

Ryan Jones dislocated his thumb yesterday afternoon.

:21:24.:21:27.

Ian Evans, Luke Charteris and Alun Wyn Jones are already injured.

:21:27.:21:33.

Robert Howley is expected to announce his squad tomorrow.

:21:33.:21:40.

Earlier, I talked to the former Wales forward, Emyr Lewis.

:21:40.:21:50.

We

:21:50.:21:50.

We have

:21:50.:21:51.

We have huge

:21:51.:21:55.

We have huge problems with regard to the second row. We have had a

:21:55.:21:59.

lot of injuries. We are facing Ireland in the first match and they

:21:59.:22:04.

are very strong in that department. Are they going to turn to youth or

:22:04.:22:13.

turn to the old guard? Maybe people like Ian Gough. The Ospreys drew

:22:13.:22:17.

with Leicester. All the regions are out of Europe. How much of a blow

:22:17.:22:23.

is that to the game in Wales? a huge blow for the regions. I

:22:23.:22:33.

don't know where they are going to get the strength to win in Europe.

:22:33.:22:39.

It doesn't help when you play internationals at the same time.

:22:39.:22:46.

The Leinster coach has suggested that central contracts should be

:22:46.:22:52.

introduced? I'm not sure what the right answer is. There are

:22:52.:22:57.

advantages to central contracts. Especially for the players. They

:22:57.:23:02.

can stay in Wales. The regions would be happy. The Union would be

:23:02.:23:06.

happy. The Union would decide when those players played. It is a huge

:23:06.:23:14.

problem. I hope it will be solved The future of the game in Wales is a

:23:14.:23:23.

I went to get some opinions The Welsh Rugby Union needs to

:23:23.:23:26.

offer more financial support or the failure of the Welsh regions in

:23:26.:23:31.

Europe will continue. That is the view of the Ospreys coach. But what

:23:31.:23:35.

about opinions across the country? According to a former Wales prop,

:23:35.:23:42.

who is now the captain of Crymych, support for young talent has

:23:42.:23:47.

improved. However, he says the WRU could do more. If you go to

:23:47.:23:53.

anywhere in Wales on a Sunday, and you have over 100 kids playing.

Rugby is very strong. We need a system where we develop them. We

:23:57.:24:02.

have to keep putting money into facilities. I have been to some

:24:02.:24:07.

clubs in Wales and they don't have changing rooms. Over to New Castle

but is there a danger of talented players slipping through the net?

:24:16.:24:22.

:24:22.:24:32.

develop the game. In the end, the Under 16 age group, there is a lot

:24:32.:24:36.

of talent that goes missing. To be fair to clubs that run youth teams,

:24:36.:24:42.

:24:42.:24:56.

regional academies. According to the coach, the success of the

see young players coming in and if the talent is there, and the player

wants it, he will be picked up. I'm confident for the future. So what

:25:11.:25:16.

exactly is Welsh rugby? Is it local rugby in the mud and the darkness,

:25:16.:25:21.

or the success offal the national team? It seems one -- success of

:25:21.:25:25.

the national team? It seems one can't succeed without the success
