Hello, I'm Ros Atkins, this is Outside Source. | :00:10. | :00:13.
Let's look through some of the main stories here in the BBC Newsroom. | :00:14. | :00:17.
Russia and the West are at loggerheads over | :00:18. | :00:21.
who was responsible for the Syria chemical attack that | :00:22. | :00:23.
Donald Trump has rowed back on comments made | :00:24. | :00:31.
by his administration last week - saying this attack may | :00:32. | :00:34.
My attitude towards Syria and President Assad has changed very | :00:35. | :00:39.
much. In the US, we'll look | :00:40. | :00:43.
at President Trump's Monday was Egypt, today | :00:44. | :00:45.
he hosted the King of Jordan. Tomorrow, Donald Trump | :00:46. | :00:51.
will welcome China's president And in sport, Jose Mourinho has been | :00:52. | :00:52.
attacking some of his players, It's a big week of diplomacy | :00:53. | :00:59.
for Donald Trump. In the last few hours he met | :01:00. | :01:20.
with Jordan's King Abdullah II. That's the two of them | :01:21. | :01:23.
with their wives in the Oval Office. It's a big deal, but it's | :01:24. | :01:26.
overshadowed on Thursday. That will happen at the President's | :01:27. | :01:30.
golf resort Maralago in Florida. He has been plenty of times taking | :01:31. | :01:44.
office. This is a private members club, the | :01:45. | :01:58.
New York Times is telling us about this man, this businessman who is a | :01:59. | :02:03.
staunch critic of the Chinese government and also a member at the | :02:04. | :02:08.
golf club. He might bump into the leaders. | :02:09. | :02:11.
This was Mr Trump and Japanese PM Shinzo Abe being briefed | :02:12. | :02:16.
Both men were briefed in front of the members of the club. | :02:17. | :02:25.
The photo was taken by a member of the resort. | :02:26. | :02:29.
Rajini Vaidyanathan joins us from Washington. | :02:30. | :02:36.
It is fair to say that Xi Jinping has not done much diplomacy in an | :02:37. | :02:43.
environment like this? If we talk about the diplomacy, we remember | :02:44. | :02:48.
some of the things that President Trump has said about China, as a | :02:49. | :02:53.
candidate he said that China was responsible for taking a number of | :02:54. | :02:58.
US drops and he accused China of being a currency minute later. He | :02:59. | :03:03.
took a phone call from the leader of Taiwan's and that is one of the | :03:04. | :03:08.
adversaries of China, so when Donald Trump says it will be an interesting | :03:09. | :03:11.
talk they have, you can bet he is right. Some of the things he says he | :03:12. | :03:17.
wants to do is to riches and he describes as the massive trade | :03:18. | :03:22.
deficit US has with China but he needs the help of China on some | :03:23. | :03:26.
areas, for example when it comes to helping contain North Korea's | :03:27. | :03:31.
nuclear ambitions. Might they play some golf? I'm not sure. This is an | :03:32. | :03:38.
interesting setting. We know President Trump likes to play golf | :03:39. | :03:44.
when at his club but it is such an interesting setting and effective is | :03:45. | :03:48.
there has raised complaints from people in the Palm Beach area. I | :03:49. | :03:54.
have been to Maralago and this is a very upmarket area but locals say it | :03:55. | :04:00.
cost the taxpayer too much money. The Mayor of Palm Beach County says | :04:01. | :04:03.
that local police are having to pay something like $120,000 every day in | :04:04. | :04:09.
extra overtime every time the President is there. He has been | :04:10. | :04:16.
there on seven weekends since taking the Presidency so he has come under | :04:17. | :04:21.
a lot of criticism because when he goes there is a lot of security that | :04:22. | :04:26.
also needs to go into place and we have some of those photos whenever | :04:27. | :04:31.
the Japanese leader came to the US. There have been concerns about the | :04:32. | :04:36.
security, members free to roam around and take photos of the | :04:37. | :04:41.
President when at dinner. It used to cost around $100,000 to become a | :04:42. | :04:46.
member of Maralago and since Mr Trump became President, that has | :04:47. | :04:51.
doubled. You need some serious money to actually get there. Out of my | :04:52. | :04:55.
range before the high strike! Thank you. -- the price hike. We will have | :04:56. | :05:07.
coverage of that visit of Xi Jinping to Maralago as it happens. | :05:08. | :05:11.
Not for the first time Jose Mourinho is attacking some of his players. | :05:12. | :05:14.
Not for the first time, it's raising eyebrows. | :05:15. | :05:16.
By any measure a 21-year-old doing well - he's an | :05:17. | :05:21.
Already Mourinho's questioned his commitment and attitude - | :05:22. | :05:29.
He had a good performance. It was his body with my brain. I was making | :05:30. | :05:47.
every decision for him. And the communication was possible because | :05:48. | :05:51.
we were very close. But I was thinking for him. We went to close, | :05:52. | :05:59.
to open, went to press the opponent, I was making every decision. And at | :06:00. | :06:08.
this level, we need a fantastic body he has two play football, the | :06:09. | :06:13.
fantastic physical qualities he has, the very good technical ability he | :06:14. | :06:20.
has. But he cannot play with my understanding of the game, he must | :06:21. | :06:21.
understand and think. BBC Sport's Trevor Sinclair | :06:22. | :06:23.
is a former England international. If you were doing that to under 10s | :06:24. | :06:26.
it would be embarrassing, I can't believe what | :06:27. | :06:31.
I heard last night. Tulsen Tollett is at | :06:32. | :06:34.
the BBC Sport Centre. He has got some form? Being very | :06:35. | :06:45.
harsh? When you look at the situation with Bastian | :06:46. | :06:51.
Schweinsteiger from over a year ago, he had to apologise about the way he | :06:52. | :06:55.
treated him. He says he did not wish that he treated him that we and he | :06:56. | :07:00.
has gone on to the Chicago Fire. If you look at Luke Shaw, 21 years old, | :07:01. | :07:06.
double leg fracture, working his way back to full fitness and trying as | :07:07. | :07:11.
hard as he can and they have the luxury of playing professional sport | :07:12. | :07:15.
and I never once had a manager who publicly spoke about players like | :07:16. | :07:19.
that. Sir Alex Ferguson, when he was in charge, he was a subtle master of | :07:20. | :07:24.
criticising players if they were winning the game and if they lost, | :07:25. | :07:30.
he protected his players. He looked at this in that type of man | :07:31. | :07:35.
management, behind closed doors. I'm not sure what Mourinho is getting | :07:36. | :07:39.
at, he has had issues in the past and Chelsea he had those issues off | :07:40. | :07:43.
the field so this is a very harsh way of looking at Luke Shaw. At some | :07:44. | :07:47.
point this might come back to bite him. Thank you for that. | :07:48. | :07:51.
Four months ago, almost every player from the Brazilian side Chapecoense | :07:52. | :07:59.
was killed in a plane crash in Colombia. | :08:00. | :08:01.
They were travelling to play Colombia's Atletico Nacional | :08:02. | :08:03.
in the final of the Copa Sud Americana. | :08:04. | :08:09.
On Tuesday the two teams finally played each other. | :08:10. | :08:12.
I'm warm welcome to rivals, something rarely seen in football, | :08:13. | :08:24.
but these teams have been brought together. After a plane crash last | :08:25. | :08:32.
year, Atletico Nacional awarded Chapecoense the Copa, although the | :08:33. | :08:36.
final was never played. It was the biggest prize they have everyone. | :08:37. | :08:41.
This time it was Atletico Nacional who got the hero's welcome as they | :08:42. | :08:45.
arrived in the City to face their rivals. TRANSLATION: We are sporting | :08:46. | :08:53.
Chapecoense and Atletico Nacional, we are one family, this is a party. | :08:54. | :09:00.
On the pitch, I returned with four yellow cards awarded. Both sides | :09:01. | :09:04.
doing their best to win with Atletico Nacional scoring this | :09:05. | :09:09.
stunning equaliser. There was a fairy tale ending for Chapecoense | :09:10. | :09:12.
with the winning goal near the end of an emotional match. The second | :09:13. | :09:18.
leg will be in Colombia next month, a trip that will bring back | :09:19. | :09:20.
difficult memories for Chapecoense fans. | :09:21. | :09:26.
If you're a fan of Nick Kyrgios - I appreciate quite a few people | :09:27. | :09:30.
don't fall into that category - but if you are, he's | :09:31. | :09:32.
One owner, meticulously cared for, regularly serviced, only | :09:33. | :09:42.
16,000 km, near new tyres, bone leather interior. | :09:43. | :09:46.
But he does say you can inbox him if your interested. | :09:47. | :09:55.
You know where to find him, on Facebook. If you live in Australia, | :09:56. | :10:01.
that would help! In a couple of minutes we'll look | :10:02. | :10:03.
at the Trump administration's reaction to North Korea's latest | :10:04. | :10:06.
ballistic missile test. A service of hope and reconciliation | :10:07. | :10:10.
has been held in Westminster Abbey - a fortnight after the attack | :10:11. | :10:18.
near the Houses of Parliament. The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge | :10:19. | :10:22.
and Prince Harry joined families and the emergency services attending | :10:23. | :10:26.
the multi-faith service, as our Royal correspondent, | :10:27. | :10:31.
Nicholas Witchell, reports. Two weeks ago the area around | :10:32. | :10:35.
the Abbey at Westminster was caught Nearby on Westminster Bridge, | :10:36. | :10:42.
there were casualties. Closer still, just inside the gates | :10:43. | :10:51.
of the Houses of Parliament, an unarmed police officer | :10:52. | :10:54.
was killed. One of the four innocent | :10:55. | :11:01.
people who died that day. Two weeks after those events | :11:02. | :11:03.
at Westminster Abbey, Leaders of the different faith | :11:04. | :11:08.
communities from across the United Kingdom were joined | :11:09. | :11:15.
in the congregation by the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge | :11:16. | :11:18.
and Prince Harry, together with members of the emergency | :11:19. | :11:21.
services, some of the bereaved families, and some of those | :11:22. | :11:23.
who were injured. Candles were lit to represent | :11:24. | :11:30.
the light which can never be extinguished | :11:31. | :11:33.
by the darkness of terror. In his address, the Dean | :11:34. | :11:39.
of Westminster recalled that amongst those who were directly affected | :11:40. | :11:43.
by the attack were people He posed the question | :11:44. | :11:46.
so many have asked. What could possibly motivate a man | :11:47. | :11:50.
to hire a car and take it from Birmingham to Brighton, | :11:51. | :11:59.
to London, and then drive it fast at people he'd never met, | :12:00. | :12:02.
couldn't possibly know, against whom he had no personal | :12:03. | :12:04.
grudge, no reason to hate them. Prayers were offered | :12:05. | :12:20.
pledging respect between The best of Muslims is the one | :12:21. | :12:21.
who utters beautiful words. Two weeks after the Westminster | :12:22. | :12:25.
attack, from an ancient abbey which has borne witness to so much, | :12:26. | :12:31.
a message of hope. This is Outside Source live | :12:32. | :12:34.
from the BBC Newsroom. Russia and the West have clashed | :12:35. | :12:56.
over who is responsible for a deadly gas attack in Syria which left | :12:57. | :13:01.
70 people dead. President Trump has condemned | :13:02. | :13:04.
the attack and says his attitude North Korea has test-fired | :13:05. | :13:07.
a medium-range ballistic missile. It did so from an eastern | :13:08. | :13:20.
port called Sinpo. South Korea's defence ministry | :13:21. | :13:25.
said it flew about 60km. Now bear in mind that | :13:26. | :13:30.
on Thursday Donald Trump meets Also bear in mind this | :13:31. | :13:32.
is in a Financial Times interview. Donald Trump said that | :13:33. | :13:41.
if China didn't do something This is the State Department's | :13:42. | :13:43.
statement on this most recent test. If it looks short, | :13:44. | :13:51.
that's because it is. "North Korea launched yet | :13:52. | :13:54.
another intermediate The United States has spoken | :13:55. | :13:57.
enough about North Korea. Earlier I spoke with Jenny Town | :13:58. | :14:04.
from John Hopkins University. I asked her what she made | :14:05. | :14:08.
of the State Department's response. It was a very disappointing | :14:09. | :14:22.
statement coming from the State Department, it lacked clear | :14:23. | :14:26.
messages, any clear direction and any clear leadership on this issue | :14:27. | :14:31.
and it is indicative of the foreign policy statements coming aren't | :14:32. | :14:34.
throughout this administration. They tend to be very ambiguous, | :14:35. | :14:40.
inconsistent and open to wide interpretation. Which causes more | :14:41. | :14:46.
anxiety at these times and more anxiety than necessary, especially | :14:47. | :14:52.
when tensions are already high. Given how many times America has had | :14:53. | :14:56.
to condemn North Korea for actions like this, is a law of diminishing | :14:57. | :15:02.
returns? Visit more fitting to consider a more public approach? | :15:03. | :15:08.
Yes, to some degree, but this was much too short and brief. There | :15:09. | :15:16.
still has to be condemnation and the leadership and there has to be some | :15:17. | :15:20.
consistency in what is said and that is what is lacking right now. In | :15:21. | :15:24.
terms of the missile test and what it told us about the capabilities of | :15:25. | :15:30.
North Korea, what did we learn? It is early to tell. There are | :15:31. | :15:37.
conflicting stories as to what the missile was, exactly, and in order | :15:38. | :15:40.
to tell from a technical standpoint, but this is a clear signal from | :15:41. | :15:43.
North Korea that they are continuing to move forward with their WMD | :15:44. | :15:48.
development programme and this is an issue that needs to be addressed. | :15:49. | :15:54.
Assuming the Americans and Chinese fashion a joint response when they | :15:55. | :15:58.
meet tomorrow and Friday, what do you think that should be? Ideally, | :15:59. | :16:07.
this will come down to a mixture of possibilities, including further | :16:08. | :16:15.
sanctions and bolstering of defences but there has to be some diplomatic | :16:16. | :16:20.
track and dramatic off ramp to get us away from the situation and had | :16:21. | :16:24.
this in a different direction, before this gets out of control. | :16:25. | :16:27.
Last night in France there was the latest | :16:28. | :16:29.
As she would have expected, the right-wing National Front | :16:30. | :16:37.
leader, Marine Le Pen, was attacked from all sides | :16:38. | :16:40.
TRANSLATION: I want to give the people their voice back, | :16:41. | :16:48.
I want the French people to get their money back. | :16:49. | :16:51.
I want to straighten France out again and to do it | :16:52. | :16:53.
I have a manifesto that's clear and precise. | :16:54. | :16:55.
I would like to tell the French people that voting to really take | :16:56. | :17:01.
back power is the only tactical vote that counts. | :17:02. | :17:09.
What I'm offering is a real, radical alternative. | :17:10. | :17:13.
The total renewal of our political life, with new faces, new practices. | :17:14. | :17:17.
Because I believe we can overcome modern problems, | :17:18. | :17:19.
And I want to get back the optimism of the French people, | :17:20. | :17:30.
Over the next ten years my objective is to make our country | :17:31. | :17:38.
A power whose economic, scientific and cultural energy | :17:39. | :17:41.
You need strength to be the president of France. | :17:42. | :17:44.
I have that strength and I'm ready to put it at the service | :17:45. | :17:47.
The first round of voting is on the 23rd of April. | :17:48. | :17:52.
Marine le Pen is polling well enough to win that. | :17:53. | :17:57.
But not to win the second round, at the moment. | :17:58. | :18:00.
And there are some interesting distinctions between her support | :18:01. | :18:03.
and the support we saw for outsider causes like Brexit and Donald Trump. | :18:04. | :18:06.
Marine le Pen performing very well here. | :18:07. | :18:18.
You can see young people are overwhelmingly behind Marine le Pen. | :18:19. | :18:21.
At the radical end of this movement are groups roughly equivalent | :18:22. | :18:24.
And what's striking is how effective they are online. | :18:25. | :18:36.
These are page views to French political websites | :18:37. | :18:38.
The dark blue are described as far right. | :18:39. | :18:45.
The sites for political candidates are far lower. | :18:46. | :18:54.
I'm joined by BBC News journalist, Henri Astier. | :18:55. | :18:58.
He has written a long article about the right France. To accept | :18:59. | :19:07.
comparisons that are helpful or is this a distinct movement? There are | :19:08. | :19:12.
comparisons, all of these themes you could see in the American vote and | :19:13. | :19:18.
in the Brexit vote, mistrust against the elite, opposition to mass | :19:19. | :19:25.
immigration, a sense that we want to return to traditional values and | :19:26. | :19:31.
this is French land. This is what this alt-right stands for. It goes | :19:32. | :19:38.
even beyond the fringe movement, it resonates among many, many sectors | :19:39. | :19:46.
of the electorate, even the left. Is this new? It is not new, this | :19:47. | :19:50.
rationalist, patriotic movement started in France before it spread | :19:51. | :19:57.
to other European countries, as far back as around 2000. All of those | :19:58. | :20:04.
websites began about ten or 12 years ago and one of the reasons why they | :20:05. | :20:09.
are so big online, why alt-right is so big, is that these views have | :20:10. | :20:14.
been shunned by the establishment and the media. You do not have in | :20:15. | :20:21.
France the equivalent of the press, maybe borderline xenophobic or | :20:22. | :20:26.
against mass immigration or politically incorrect tabloids or | :20:27. | :20:31.
against the EU, you do not have that in France in the mainstream. If you | :20:32. | :20:37.
hold those views, you have to go online. Do the aspire to making | :20:38. | :20:43.
Marine Le Pen President? Is that their goal? That is interesting, | :20:44. | :20:51.
there is a large sector of these fringe groups that are quite wary of | :20:52. | :20:56.
Marine Le Pen because recently she has gone more mainstream, appealing | :20:57. | :20:59.
to the left-wing vote, so they are trying to hold her to this hardline | :21:00. | :21:06.
position but what they will try to do is to get people to vote for her. | :21:07. | :21:11.
A couple of weeks ago we were in the Netherland 's covering the election | :21:12. | :21:16.
and it was possible to see how the had influenced the agenda of main | :21:17. | :21:20.
politicians. Is the alt-right impacting across the spectrum? It | :21:21. | :21:28.
is, it is so young. As you could see in that graph, almost 40% of under | :21:29. | :21:34.
30s are going to vote for Marine Le Pen and beyond that, you have many | :21:35. | :21:39.
people on the left, on the hard left, people voting in the first | :21:40. | :21:48.
round, the equivalent of Jeremy Corbyn, even further to the left, | :21:49. | :21:53.
and assuming he is not there in the second round, it is reckoned that | :21:54. | :21:59.
50% of his voters will not vote for the mainstream candidate and many | :22:00. | :22:04.
will vote for Marine Le Pen because she is Eurosceptic, she speaks for | :22:05. | :22:07.
the people as well. It is the extremes meeting. Very interesting. | :22:08. | :22:14.
Thank you for that. And you can get his analysis on the BBC website on | :22:15. | :22:19.
just those subjects. Back to America... | :22:20. | :22:20.
Ivanka Trump's given her first interview alone since her | :22:21. | :22:23.
She's now formerly called an assistant to the President | :22:24. | :22:30.
and she's been present in a number of high profile meetings. | :22:31. | :22:35.
Japan PM Shinzo Abe, German Chancellor Angela Merkel. | :22:36. | :22:37.
Last week her role ws made official - Assistant to the President. | :22:38. | :22:50.
Now she has given her first | :22:51. | :22:52.
You say you are your father 's daughter and you have critics, but | :22:53. | :23:01.
people say, where is she on Planned Parenthood and gay rights? On the | :23:02. | :23:05.
rights of women and climate change? It is like you are being held | :23:06. | :23:10.
personally accountable for not speaking up. What do you say? I | :23:11. | :23:15.
would say not to conflate a lack of public denouncement with silence. I | :23:16. | :23:21.
think there are multiple ways to have your voice heard. In some cases | :23:22. | :23:27.
it is through protest and going onto the nightly news talking about or | :23:28. | :23:31.
denouncing every issue on which you disagree, at other times it is | :23:32. | :23:39.
quietly and correctly and candidly. Where I disagree with my father, he | :23:40. | :23:44.
knows that and I will express myself with total candour. Where I agree, I | :23:45. | :23:49.
fully leaned in and support the agenda and hope that I can be an | :23:50. | :23:55.
asset to him. And make a positive impact. But I respect the fact that | :23:56. | :24:01.
he always listens. This is how he was in business, how he is as the | :24:02. | :24:07.
President. What are the issues that Ivanka Trump champions? She was | :24:08. | :24:09.
pressed on this and this is the answer. For me, this is not about | :24:10. | :24:16.
promoting my viewpoint, I was not elected by the people to be | :24:17. | :24:19.
President, my father will do a tremendous job. And I want to help | :24:20. | :24:26.
them. But I do not think it will make me a more effective advocate to | :24:27. | :24:32.
constantly articulate every issue publicly where I disagree. And that | :24:33. | :24:37.
is OK, I will take hits from some critics who say that I should take | :24:38. | :24:44.
to the street. And others will, in the long-term, respect where I have | :24:45. | :24:50.
got things done. But I think most of the impact I have over time, most | :24:51. | :24:56.
people will not actually know about that. Time is up. Thanks for | :24:57. | :24:59. |
