A just married couple start a new day, of their South African | :00:25. | :00:28.
honeymoon. By the end of it, the bride would be dead. | :00:28. | :00:38.
:00:38. | :00:41. | ||
Executed, it is alleged, on the orders of her husband. Just two | :00:41. | :00:49.
weeks earlier, Anni Hindocha had married Shiren Dewani in a | :00:49. | :00:57.
fairytale three-day wedding ceremony. She was so beautiful. | :00:57. | :01:01.
Anni's honeymoon murder generated interest around the world, and one | :01:01. | :01:05.
burning question, did Shrien have her killed? I just got married to | :01:05. | :01:12.
the girl of my dreams, why would I want to kill her? Now, said to be a | :01:12. | :01:17.
broken man and a suicide risk, the 32-year-old insists he's innocent, | :01:17. | :01:21.
he's fighting a British court's decision to extradite him to South | :01:21. | :01:27.
Africa. Anni's family demand Shrien must go. If he's innocent, the | :01:27. | :01:31.
court will show that, if he's not, then he should pay for what he has | :01:31. | :01:38.
done. The South African police and | :01:38. | :01:42.
prosecutors have already made up their minds about Shrien's guilt. | :01:42. | :01:47.
This is a criminal matter of someone who murdered his wife who | :01:47. | :01:51.
should have been celebrating her honeymoon. Have they got it right? | :01:51. | :01:57.
Should he ever be extra dietd, it won't just be Shiren Dewani in the | :01:57. | :02:00.
dock. South Africa will be on trial. If justice fails, it will give this | :02:00. | :02:06.
country a bad impression. For the first time, we are able to | :02:06. | :02:12.
piece together key bits of the case using CCTV, never before shown of | :02:12. | :02:17.
the couple in their Cape Town hotel. The footage captures the moment | :02:17. | :02:22.
Shrien is said to have commissioned Anni's murder. It shows Shrien and | :02:22. | :02:26.
Anni just hours before she was killed. And the moment after her | :02:27. | :02:31.
death when the Bristol businessman is said to have paid off one of the | :02:31. | :02:39.
hit team. Tonight, on Panorama, is Shiren Dewani a man who could have | :02:39. | :02:42.
his wife killed, and the new footage, which suggests the case | :02:42. | :02:52.
:02:52. | :03:08. | ||
against him may not be as clear cut It was meant to be the beginning of | :03:08. | :03:16.
a lifetime together, but it ended barely before it had started. The | :03:16. | :03:22.
first day of Shrien and Anni's honeymoon, a luxury Safari lodge in | :03:22. | :03:28.
South Africa's Kruger National Park. Flying in overnight from the UK, | :03:28. | :03:34.
they had been married for just nine days. She struck me as extremely | :03:34. | :03:39.
beautiful woman, I was quite taken aback when I saw her, beautiful | :03:39. | :03:44.
long dark hair. He seemed like a very decent young man. They seemed | :03:44. | :03:47.
like any other honeymoon couple that came through here, very much | :03:47. | :03:54.
in love and enjoying the bush. This is where the Dewanis stayed, our | :03:54. | :03:59.
Malacite Suite. What went on in the relationship behind closed doors, | :03:59. | :04:03.
only Shiren Dewani really knows, we can't ask him. He's sectioned under | :04:03. | :04:09.
the Mental Health Act. But, we can hear Shiren Dewani's | :04:09. | :04:13.
actual words, before he was arrested in December 2010, the 32- | :04:14. | :04:16.
year-old gave an interview about the events surrounding his wife's | :04:16. | :04:21.
death. It was with the Sun Newspaper, and it was recorded. | :04:21. | :04:29.
Panorama has obtained a copy. Was Shrien telling the truth? When he | :04:29. | :04:33.
spoke just a week after Anni's death, there were already are you | :04:33. | :04:41.
mores that Shrien was behind her murder. This is -- are you mores | :04:41. | :04:45.
that he was behind -- are you murs that he was behind her death. | :04:45. | :04:51.
made some of the guests sick with our hamness. Anni and Shrien were | :04:51. | :05:00.
comfortable around each other. They reminded Sharan and I as two good | :05:00. | :05:04.
mates. Chloe Speller was staying at Chitwa Chitwa with her good friend, | :05:04. | :05:07.
Sharon Aylward. They were not overaffectionate towards each other, | :05:07. | :05:11.
we put it down to a cultural difference. Anni, unlike her | :05:11. | :05:16.
husband, had never been on Safari before. | :05:16. | :05:26.
:05:26. | :05:32. | ||
Shrien says the couple had an amazing time. The Dewanis left | :05:32. | :05:37.
their Safari mind after three days, heading towards the next leg of | :05:37. | :05:41.
their seemingly idyllic honeymoon. She loved everything about life. | :05:41. | :05:44.
She loved going out, she loved being at home, she loved to talk, | :05:44. | :05:48.
she loved her friends, she loved her family. | :05:48. | :05:54.
Just a fortnight before Anni died, she married Shrien in a spectacular | :05:54. | :05:59.
three-day ceremony in Mumbai, India. The wedding cost 150,000. The | :05:59. | :06:05.
couple had known each other for a year flaf, and been engaged for -- | :06:05. | :06:09.
a year-and-a-half, and had been engaged for five months. I was very | :06:09. | :06:13.
proud, she was so beautiful. Was it a very happy day for you? It was a | :06:13. | :06:19.
most happy day. At their wedding, as they did on the Safari, the | :06:19. | :06:23.
couple project add picture of happiness. Yet Anni's family say | :06:23. | :06:30.
their relationship was blighted by underlying tensions, there were | :06:30. | :06:33.
dozens of text messages, that they have handed to South African police. | :06:33. | :06:40.
We heard about one in which she says, "crying is any new hobby", | :06:40. | :06:44.
which suggests she was not happy. Is that the impression you got? | :06:44. | :06:48.
That particular text message was not sent to myself, it was sent to | :06:48. | :06:54.
a friend in India. But it was sent? Yes. Things changed between the | :06:54. | :06:58.
engagment and the wedding. They got more problems within the | :06:58. | :07:07.
relationship. He was controlling. I think that she didn't really like | :07:07. | :07:14.
that. Three weeking before the wedding, | :07:14. | :07:19.
it looked to Anni's cousin, as though the relationship was | :07:19. | :07:23.
actually over. Anni and Shrien had a fight, and I found out because | :07:23. | :07:27.
Anni called me in the middle of the night crying in the phone. She told | :07:27. | :07:32.
me she had thrown the ring at Shrien, and she took a cab to | :07:33. | :07:37.
another hotel and she stayed there the night. At that point she was | :07:37. | :07:40.
going to basically walk out of everything. Anni's older sister | :07:40. | :07:44.
convinced her it was just the stress of organising the wedding, | :07:44. | :07:50.
persuading her to return to Shrien. I should have listened to her. | :07:50. | :08:00.
:08:00. | :08:01. | ||
Because then she may be, maybe this wouldn't have happened. | :08:01. | :08:07.
Cape Town, almost a thousand miles away from their Safari lodge at | :08:07. | :08:15.
Chitwa Chitwa. Shrien and Anni landed here at 4.00pm, Friday 12th | :08:16. | :08:20.
November. 30 hours later Anni would be dead, her body found in the back | :08:20. | :08:26.
of an abandoned taxi. Police in South Africa have begun a | :08:27. | :08:30.
murder hunt...Her Body abandoned in the back of a taxi, and a manhunt | :08:30. | :08:35.
under way to find those responsible. Her 31-year-old husband was | :08:35. | :08:40.
unharmed. At first it appeared Anni was yet another victim of South | :08:40. | :08:45.
Africa's violent society. But then, an even darker and more | :08:45. | :08:51.
extraordinary twist, a taxi driver Shrien hired, told police that | :08:51. | :08:57.
within an hour of meeting the businessman, he had been contracted | :08:57. | :09:01.
to complete Anni's execution. The taxi driver was offered a reduced | :09:02. | :09:07.
sentence if he offered to testify against Shrien Dewani. | :09:07. | :09:13.
The South African police chief was confident, Shrien, who he | :09:13. | :09:19.
reportedly dubbed, "a murdering monkey", was there man". I'm not a | :09:19. | :09:23.
legal expert what to charge a person for, what we know he did par | :09:23. | :09:30.
take in the killing of the wife. I travelled to South Africa to test | :09:30. | :09:36.
that confidence. In the late 1990, I was based here | :09:36. | :09:44.
as a BBC foreign correspondent. The couple, like me, would need a taxi | :09:44. | :09:49.
to travel to their hotel, the five- star Cape Grace. But unlike the | :09:50. | :09:55.
Dewanis, they didn't choose the hotel's pricey but plush service, | :09:55. | :10:01.
or even the airport's cheaper official taxies, Shrien opted for | :10:01. | :10:08.
an illegal taxi tout he had never met before. Zola Robert Tongo. 30 | :10:09. | :10:13.
at the time, an unmarried father of five, and by all accounts, a hard | :10:13. | :10:20.
working taxi driver, with no police record. He spoke in English, he | :10:20. | :10:26.
seemed trustworthy, the car seemed secure. We have used this actor to | :10:26. | :10:30.
read extracts from Tongo's evidence statement to the South African High | :10:30. | :10:38.
Court. I am in formal employment, I also freelance as a shuttle | :10:38. | :10:41.
operator from the Cape Town International Airport. Tongo's | :10:41. | :10:45.
freelancing was news to his boss, who had no idea his model employee | :10:45. | :10:49.
was moonlighting. When I bought the business, the current owner said to | :10:49. | :10:54.
me that out of all of the drivers, Robert is the most trustworthy. I | :10:54. | :10:59.
believed him. During the time that he worked for me, there was also no | :10:59. | :11:07.
reason for me to believe otherwise. On the 20 or so minute journey to | :11:07. | :11:12.
the Cape Grace, Shrien said the couple got on well with Tongo. | :11:12. | :11:15.
showed us around the sites that were there to see between the | :11:15. | :11:22.
airport and the hotel. We became quite jokey with him. If you have | :11:22. | :11:28.
ever met Zola, he's a very, very nice guy, he has a very open, | :11:28. | :11:33.
friendly, easy going personality. It wouldn't surprise me if he made | :11:33. | :11:42.
a good impression. Welcome to the Cape Grace Hotel, please enjoy your | :11:42. | :11:48.
stay with us. Thanks a lot. You are welcome. | :11:48. | :11:53.
The Cape Grace, sitting right in the heart of Cape Town's water | :11:53. | :12:00.
front, the hotel boasts fabulous views of the iconic Table Mountain. | :12:00. | :12:05.
With rooms starting at around 300 a night, it is one of the most | :12:05. | :12:11.
expensive hotels in the city. This is Tongo and the Dewanis | :12:11. | :12:15.
arriving at the Cape Grace. The honeymooners planned to stay here | :12:15. | :12:20.
for four nights, leaving on the Tuesday. | :12:20. | :12:25.
Panorama has obtained swathes of CCTV footage, showing Shrien and | :12:25. | :12:31.
Anni Dewani, staying, on their honeymoon, in this hotel. | :12:31. | :12:34.
The cameras track Anni from the moment she walks into the hotel to | :12:34. | :12:40.
check in. This footage is a unique and revealing insight into the | :12:40. | :12:44.
couples' relationship, in the hours before she was killed. Until now, | :12:44. | :12:53.
none of it has been seen publicly. Outside Shrien is alone with Tongo, | :12:53. | :12:58.
for a shade over five minutes. According to South African police, | :12:58. | :13:01.
the CCTV helps build the case against Shrien. | :13:01. | :13:06.
After we were at the hotel, Shrien Dewani approached me alone, and | :13:06. | :13:09.
asked me if he knew anybody who could have a client of his taken | :13:09. | :13:13.
off the scene. After some discussion with him, I understood | :13:13. | :13:23.
:13:23. | :13:23. | ||
that he wanted someone, a woman, killed. Shrien then leaves Tongo | :13:23. | :13:28.
waiting for him in the hotel car park, and checks himself in, | :13:28. | :13:32.
alongside Anni. Has Shrien simply hired Tongo as a honeymoon tour | :13:32. | :13:36.
guide, as he says, or has he already taken the first step | :13:36. | :13:42.
towards having Anni killed. Finishing up at the check-in desk, | :13:42. | :13:45.
Shrien leaves Anni for another, longer meeting with the taxi driver. | :13:45. | :13:49.
Anni is left to be shown to the couples' room, by a member of the | :13:49. | :13:57.
Cape Grace staff. So what did Shrien and Tongo talk | :13:57. | :14:02.
about? If it was murder, Shrien was taking a huge risk, what is to stop | :14:02. | :14:05.
Tongo going straight to the police. From my room at the Cape Grace, you | :14:06. | :14:11.
can see the car park where Tongo and Shrien allegedly plotted the | :14:11. | :14:14.
murder. By this stage they had known each other about an hour, | :14:14. | :14:18.
they had only been together alone for about 17 minutes. Is it really | :14:18. | :14:21.
credible, that in a short time, including the meeting down there, | :14:21. | :14:25.
they can arrange a woman's murder? Well, South African police think it | :14:25. | :14:32.
is. As do others. It doesn't surprise me at all, I | :14:32. | :14:37.
think very few things would surprise a criminal lawyer in South | :14:37. | :14:44.
Africa. Not every South African lawyer is convinced, though. Surely | :14:44. | :14:49.
any intelligent person, wanting to appoint a hitman, would look | :14:49. | :14:52.
carefully at the person and wouldn't just engage him within | :14:52. | :15:02.
:15:02. | :15:11. | ||
half an hour. It just doesn't make Lake veorn earn in central Sweden, | :15:11. | :15:17.
Anni Hindocha was born in a town on the shores. Childhood holidays were | :15:17. | :15:21.
spent on its beaches, and then last year, her family came here to | :15:21. | :15:28.
scatter Anni's ashes. When you are here you just think about your | :15:28. | :15:34.
sister? I do, I miss her, I think she's lying here, and she shouldn't | :15:34. | :15:39.
be here, she should have been alive. She should have been here, standing | :15:39. | :15:47.
here with me. Anni's death has devastated the Hindocha family. | :15:47. | :15:51.
Every single day is a nightmare for us, it is a big torture. I haven't | :15:51. | :16:01.
:16:01. | :16:04. | ||
been to work for one year now, I can't do it. The family home in | :16:04. | :16:08.
Mariestad, where Anni grew up, here the Hindocha family can't grieve | :16:08. | :16:12.
properly, because of the question, as yet unanswered by a court, was | :16:12. | :16:18.
Anni killed on Shrien's orders? We need so many answers, and one | :16:18. | :16:23.
answer I need to know is, what happened to her? And why. Do you | :16:23. | :16:29.
come in here every day. Yes, every day we come in here. And I light a | :16:29. | :16:36.
candle. Because this was her room. I don't have the guts to come here, | :16:36. | :16:40.
not often. I did everything a father should do for a daughter. | :16:40. | :16:50.
:16:50. | :16:54. | ||
Only thing I could not do is save After Tongo's meeting with Shrien | :16:54. | :16:57.
at the Cape Grace, the driver told police he drove away from the hotel | :16:57. | :17:04.
to meet a man who played a crucial role in Anni's murder. I went to a | :17:04. | :17:09.
friend of mine, to inquire whether he could assist me sourcing anyone | :17:09. | :17:17.
prepared to carry out the killing as requested by Shrien Dewani. | :17:17. | :17:22.
Monde Mbolombo, the called middle man and self-confessed link between | :17:22. | :17:28.
Zola Tongo, and the men said to be Anni's killers. | :17:28. | :17:34.
Mbolombo worked as a receptionist at this hotel. His detailed | :17:34. | :17:39.
confession to his part in Anni's murder, has never been heard in | :17:39. | :17:45.
public before. Somewhere between 3.00pm-5.00pm, Zola came in and | :17:45. | :17:49.
asked to speak to me in private. We went out and stood in front of the | :17:49. | :17:56.
hotel, where Zola asked me if I knew anybody that was a hitman. | :17:56. | :18:03.
Right from the start, there are holes in his story. His time, must | :18:03. | :18:08.
be wrong, the Dewanis didn't land at Cape Town until around 4.0 0mm, | :18:08. | :18:14.
and didn't arrive at the cape -- 4.00pm, and didn't arrive at the | :18:14. | :18:22.
Cape Grace until after 5.00. Yet in return for his evidence against in | :18:22. | :18:26.
the case, he has been given immunity if he is judged to have | :18:26. | :18:33.
told the truth. According to Tongo he said they discussed the share of | :18:33. | :18:39.
the money in the murder. He said we should pay the hitman 10,000 Rand. | :18:39. | :18:44.
At first I said I didn't know anyone, then I remembered, | :18:44. | :18:48.
Mziwamadoda Qwabe. Qwabe, an unemployed 25-year-old, | :18:48. | :18:57.
and the man alleged to have driven Anni to her death. Qwabe had been | :18:57. | :19:02.
arrested for attempted murder in 2009, but the case was never | :19:02. | :19:08.
properly investigated, so he remained a free man. I was | :19:08. | :19:13.
contacted who told me another man, named Zola, was looking for a | :19:13. | :19:23.
:19:23. | :19:24. | ||
hitman to murder somebody. While plans for Anni's murder were | :19:24. | :19:27.
allegedly under way, the Dewanis left the Cape Grace for a Friday | :19:27. | :19:31.
night out. Just a short walk from their hotel, | :19:31. | :19:34.
which is 50 yards back that way, is where they went out to dinner here | :19:34. | :19:40.
on Cape Town's water front. They booked a table at 9.00pm, it is | :19:40. | :19:50.
:19:50. | :19:55. | ||
just coming up to that time now. Their waitress says she remembers | :19:55. | :20:04.
the Dewanis well. They both were reserved, not your | :20:04. | :20:08.
typical honeymoon table, I have served quite a few honeymoon tables, | :20:08. | :20:11.
they are normally very much in love, hugging and kissing, it wasn't | :20:11. | :20:16.
really the case here. The next time Clara Jane went to save them, | :20:16. | :20:22.
Shrien wasn't there. I had noticed Anni was sitting alone, she told me | :20:22. | :20:26.
that I should hold back the shoe she, because her husband had gone | :20:26. | :20:33.
on -- shoe -- sushi, because her husband had gone on a business call. | :20:33. | :20:37.
There may have been other business calls, but one was to Zola Tongo. | :20:37. | :20:40.
Police have phone records that revealed they spoke for five | :20:40. | :20:44.
minutes and 27 seconds. A lot of people commented about this man who | :20:44. | :20:49.
was gone, leaving this lady on their honeymoon. What did Shrien | :20:49. | :20:53.
speak to Tongo about? Because he is currently sectioned in the UK, we | :20:53. | :20:59.
can't ask him, and his family declined to take part in this | :20:59. | :21:02.
programme. What is for certain, Shrien's | :21:02. | :21:07.
recollection of the night, doesn't tally with what the waitress told | :21:07. | :21:11.
us. We had an amazing evening on Friday night, food, environment, | :21:11. | :21:17.
drink, everything, was just fantastic. | :21:18. | :21:23.
But, if Shrien Dewani wanted his wife dead, what could possibly be | :21:23. | :21:28.
the motive? Could it have been financial? Anni's family have never | :21:28. | :21:38.
:21:38. | :21:39. | ||
thought so. So what else? That has come up a lot of stuff about his | :21:39. | :21:43.
sexuality, maybe that was a motivation. That he might be gay? | :21:43. | :21:46.
Could be. And that he got into something that he didn't want to be | :21:46. | :21:54.
in? Could be. South African police seem sure. | :21:54. | :22:02.
This UK UK based man, who advertises his services on the web, | :22:02. | :22:07.
told them Shrien was a client, and even before he got engaged, he told | :22:07. | :22:13.
Leisser he needed to find a way out of the marriage. Could he have felt | :22:13. | :22:15.
trapped? I don't know. There is nothing wrong with being gay, it is | :22:15. | :22:22.
just that if you are, then why are you with a woman? Panorama | :22:22. | :22:26.
understands another alleged male sexual partner from Shrien Dewani's | :22:26. | :22:29.
past, contacted British police, but declined to give a statement. But | :22:29. | :22:34.
if there were other men, there was also a history of girlfriends. He | :22:34. | :22:39.
had even been engaged before. This was not an arranged marriage, | :22:39. | :22:43.
Shrien maintains Anni was the one. You just got married to the girl of | :22:43. | :22:53.
:22:53. | :23:07. | ||
my dreams, and she actually was the girl of my dreams. The day of | :23:07. | :23:16.
Anni's murder. The couple rose late and headed to | :23:16. | :23:22.
the Cape Grace restaurant for breakfast, it was after 1.00am, | :23:22. | :23:28.
despite claims of tensions within the relationship, the CCTV footage | :23:28. | :23:31.
tells a different story. They headed to the hotel swimming pool. | :23:31. | :23:36.
But Shrien didn't spend too long relaxing with Anni. After just ten | :23:36. | :23:46.
:23:46. | :23:46. | ||
minutes, Shrien heads back to their room, to change. | :23:46. | :23:51.
On Saturday Shrien Dewani contacted me to meet him at the hotel. Shrien | :23:51. | :23:57.
is once again alone with Zola Tongo. They head into central Cape Town. | :23:57. | :24:01.
Shrien Dewani said he was willing to pay an amount of 15,000 Rand, he | :24:01. | :24:06.
said he had US dollars, and could pay in US dollars. | :24:06. | :24:11.
But, it is claimed, the hitmen wanted paying in Rand. So Shrien's | :24:11. | :24:15.
US dollars needed changing, and Tongo knew a place where he could | :24:15. | :24:24.
get a good exchange rate. According to police evidence, Shrien Dewani | :24:24. | :24:33.
change $1 500 here on the black market, worth about 10,000 Rand, | :24:33. | :24:39.
added to the 11,000 Rand Shrien had cashed up on honeymoon, and it is | :24:39. | :24:45.
more than enough for the hit. That is about 1900, that is an awful | :24:45. | :24:48.
lot of cash to be carrying around for the final four days of a | :24:49. | :24:55.
honeymoon. But was it actually money for Anni's murder? | :24:55. | :24:59.
The fact that Shrien changed money was not a secret. He told Anni's | :24:59. | :25:06.
father. Where are you, I asked him, he said he was in the town changing | :25:06. | :25:13.
money. It was not a big issue for me at that time. On the way back to | :25:13. | :25:20.
the Cape Grace, Tongo insists that Shrien Dewani told him how he | :25:21. | :25:27.
wanted Anni murdered. We would make it looks a if it was a victim of a | :25:27. | :25:33.
murder, commited with a firearm. For my assistance I would be paid | :25:33. | :25:37.
5,000 Rand. They arrive back at the Cape Grace, Shrien has now been | :25:37. | :25:42.
away from Anni for 55 minutes. He runs straight back to his room, to | :25:42. | :25:52.
change again. The Dewanis spent the afternoon at | :25:52. | :25:55.
the pool, Shrien had organised for Tongo to collect the couple later | :25:55. | :26:03.
that evening. While Shrien and Anni were relaxing, | :26:03. | :26:08.
Tongo claims he was planning the murder. He came here, Khayelitsha | :26:08. | :26:13.
township, to meet the driver, Qwabe, and the man later accused of | :26:13. | :26:21.
shooting Anni. Xolile Mngeni. picture here is my grandson, he | :26:21. | :26:26.
looks very happy there. 26 years old, unemployed, Mngeni, lived with | :26:26. | :26:32.
his grandmother here, on this township plot. | :26:32. | :26:38.
His mother passed away in 1990. At that time he was five years old. So | :26:38. | :26:43.
I grow him up. And it has been a struggle ever | :26:43. | :26:47.
since, especially in a country where work is so scarce. | :26:47. | :26:57.
:26:57. | :27:04. | ||
More than half of those aged This shack is the reality for many | :27:04. | :27:08.
young black South Africans. A reality just a few miles from the | :27:08. | :27:13.
luxury of the Cape Grace. Wealthy tourists and poverty can be a | :27:13. | :27:16.
dangerous mix in a country which has one of the highest murder rates | :27:16. | :27:23.
in the world. And when they collide so publicly, tourists may stay away. | :27:23. | :27:28.
The South African authorities are paying so much attention to the | :27:28. | :27:32.
Dewani case, to show the rest of the world that they are doing | :27:32. | :27:39.
something about crime in South Africa. That is a big factor in | :27:39. | :27:42.
this case. The reputation of our country affects us all. And we have | :27:42. | :27:47.
been getting a lot of bad press. Very many South Africans are | :27:47. | :27:55.
extremely upset about it. Mngeni had been seen that morning, | :27:55. | :28:02.
according to police, carrying a 9mm pistol. I informed Qwabe and Mngeni | :28:02. | :28:07.
that they would receive 15,000, Qwabe said that we had to leave the | :28:07. | :28:16.
15,000 Rand in the cuby hole of the vehicle. | :28:16. | :28:23.
15,000 split between the hitman, 5,000 Rand for Tongo, 5,000 for | :28:23. | :28:29.
Mbolombo, the middle man, a to thele of 25,000 Rand. All these | :28:29. | :28:34.
figure -- a total of 25,000 Rand. All these figures come from a state | :28:34. | :28:38.
from the murder. The court also heard from Tongo that Shrien | :28:38. | :28:45.
offered him just 15,000 Rand, which is it, 15,000 or 25,000? | :28:45. | :28:49.
It is a massive inconsistency in Tongo's evidence, which has been | :28:49. | :28:59.
accepted by the South African courts, without challenge. Saturday | :28:59. | :29:09.
:29:09. | :29:09. | ||
night, the night of Anni's murder. At 6.17pm, Shrien Dewani emerges | :29:09. | :29:16.
from the couples' room, ready to go out that night. Shortly afterwards, | :29:16. | :29:24.
Anni joins him. In less than six hours she will be dead. I had | :29:24. | :29:29.
arranged with Shiren Dewani that I would pick him up at the hotel, in | :29:29. | :29:33.
order to commence the plan we had agreed upon. Is this a couple where | :29:33. | :29:37.
the plan has planned his wife's murder, and she's going to die in | :29:37. | :29:43.
the next few hours, and he knows that? The couple are making their | :29:43. | :29:50.
way to the Cape Grace bar. Where they pose for pictures. Lots of | :29:50. | :29:54.
them. According to Shrien, Anni loved to get people to take photos | :29:54. | :29:58.
of the couple together. And if she didn't like the resulting picture, | :29:58. | :30:06.
she could always persuade them to take another. | :30:06. | :30:11.
This is, in a way, the couple whose story has not been told in the | :30:11. | :30:18.
accounts of these events so far. That same evening, Anni spoke to | :30:18. | :30:21.
her parents for the first time since the wedding. She said | :30:21. | :30:27.
everything is fine. But I have got a lot to tell you. I will tell you | :30:27. | :30:34.
when I'm back on Tuesday in London. Vincent thought his daughter | :30:34. | :30:39.
sounded muted and -- Vinod Hindocha thought his daughter sounded muted. | :30:39. | :30:43.
It wasn't the normal Anni. I thought it was strange, she's not | :30:43. | :30:48.
talking to me, properly, I found something is not OK. But if dad was | :30:48. | :30:54.
concerned, mum wasn't. I wasn't worried, that was the last time I | :30:54. | :31:01.
spoke to her. 7.30 came and went, and Tongo | :31:01. | :31:06.
didn't turn up as arranged. When he said he was late, we had another | :31:06. | :31:13.
drink and carried on chatting. Tongo claims Shrien Dewani became | :31:13. | :31:16.
agitated because he was late. His lawyer goes further. Dewani | :31:16. | :31:20.
demanded to know what the hold up was, and insisted the act be | :31:21. | :31:25.
perpetrated, and perpetrated that very day. But this CCTV, never | :31:25. | :31:29.
before made public, does not support that version of events. | :31:29. | :31:36.
Shrien is pictured here holding his phone to his left here, Panorama | :31:36. | :31:41.
can reveal, this was the moment he spoke to Tongo, 7.45pm, he shows no | :31:41. | :31:45.
sign of being agitated, is it credible that Shrien insisted Anni | :31:45. | :31:51.
was to be killed that night, when she's sat right next to him? | :31:51. | :31:58.
The Dewanis left the bar and waited in the lobby for Tongo to arrive. | :31:58. | :32:04.
Look at that, he leans over and pecks her on the cheek. She seems | :32:04. | :32:09.
to, interesting body language, she almost pulls away, and then they | :32:09. | :32:14.
put their heads together, very sweetly. Is he doing this for the | :32:15. | :32:21.
cameras? Shrien continues to take pictures of Anni. Is this what a | :32:21. | :32:27.
murderer does? He takes pictures of his wife, before he has her killed? | :32:27. | :32:31.
As we will see, there are other telling moments of the couple | :32:31. | :32:41.
together. Side by side, the Dewanis leave the | :32:41. | :32:50.
Cape Grace lobby to join Tongo. texted just before 8.00 to say he | :32:50. | :32:54.
was outside, he didn't say why he was late. Anni gets into the car in | :32:54. | :33:04.
:33:04. | :33:05. | ||
which her life will shortly end. Tongo first took the couple on a | :33:05. | :33:09.
nightime tour of Cape Town. Showing them a view where they | :33:09. | :33:16.
could see the entire city. Before heading towards a restaurant 27 | :33:16. | :33:21.
miles away from the Cape Grace, for a 9.30 reservation. The route to | :33:21. | :33:25.
the restaurant, in a town called Somerset West, is flanked either | :33:25. | :33:35.
:33:35. | :33:48. | ||
side by townships, to where Tongo This is the typical Saturday night | :33:48. | :33:55.
party scene, right outside Mzolis, in Gugulethu township. | :33:55. | :33:58.
One thing you are told in the country, is you are do not go into | :33:58. | :34:04.
the township at night, as a tourist, just don't do it. | :34:05. | :34:08.
Zola Tongo's taxi was to be attacked by Qwabe and Mngeni here, | :34:08. | :34:14.
just down the road from Mzolis, but because he was running late, the | :34:14. | :34:17.
hijackers were not there. Tongo instead left Gugulethu and headed | :34:17. | :34:23.
for the restaurant the couple had booked in Somerset West. | :34:23. | :34:28.
Qwabe called me and confirmed that he and Mngeni had just missed me | :34:28. | :34:33.
when I drove into Gugulethu. Mid- journey, according to Shrien, the | :34:33. | :34:37.
Dewanis changed their minds about where they wanted to eat, Tongo | :34:37. | :34:42.
diverted to the seafront, in Somerset West. We had a short walk, | :34:42. | :34:45.
it was a nice warm evening, and there was a large number of people | :34:45. | :34:50.
flying kites on the beach. Which doesn't seem to make any | :34:50. | :34:56.
sense. They were here at roughly this time, and it is windy, but as | :34:56. | :35:00.
you can see, it is pitch black, it does raise the question, why on | :35:00. | :35:03.
earth Shrien Dewani would say he was here, watching people flying | :35:03. | :35:08.
kites. Tongo is pictured here, escorting | :35:08. | :35:16.
the Dewanis into Surfside, a budget seafood restaurant. | :35:16. | :35:19.
Prior to entering the restaurant, Shrien Dewani asked me what was | :35:19. | :35:24.
happening. He said he wanted to have the job done that night. | :35:24. | :35:31.
the couple were having dinner, Zola Tongo rescheduled the hijack. | :35:31. | :35:35.
contacted me and told me the husband wanted his wife killed that | :35:35. | :35:39.
same night. Qwabe confirmed they would be waiting at the previously | :35:39. | :35:44.
agreed location. The couple were in Surfside less than one hour. We ate | :35:44. | :35:47.
fairly quick low and decided to head back into town. I called Zola | :35:47. | :35:53.
to come back and pick us up, he came outside the restaurant and he | :35:53. | :35:58.
was waiting. Tongo says the call was more sinister. Shrien Dewani | :35:58. | :36:04.
contacted me and wanted to know if I had arrange the for the guys, I | :36:04. | :36:08.
confirmed to Shrien Dewani that everything had been arranged. | :36:08. | :36:18.
:36:18. | :36:19. | ||
These are the last known pictures of Anni Dewani alive. | :36:19. | :36:29.
The the couple left Surfside at 10.24 pm. One of Tongo's most | :36:29. | :36:32.
devastating allegations against Shrien Dewani comes from this leg | :36:32. | :36:37.
of the journey. I sent a text to Shrien Dewani not to forget about | :36:37. | :36:41.
the money, he answered by way of text message that the money was in | :36:41. | :36:46.
an envelope in the pouch behind the front passenger seat. If what Tongo | :36:46. | :36:51.
says is true, what was the money for? And why would Shrien be | :36:51. | :36:57.
texting Tongo with Anni beside him in the car? | :36:57. | :37:02.
Tongo's lawyer has never been shown the actual texts, but says he did | :37:02. | :37:05.
see electronic signatures which reveal there was an exchange of | :37:05. | :37:10.
texts between the two men. Do South African police have the wording of | :37:10. | :37:18.
these alleged text messages? Or are they relying on Tongo's say so. | :37:18. | :37:24.
Shrien says Tongo offered to take them to a place where they could | :37:24. | :37:27.
watch African dancing. I was keen to go straight back, she had a | :37:27. | :37:32.
habit of calling me boring, so I succumbed to the going out. We had | :37:32. | :37:36.
no reason to distrust him at all. You do not feel that Anni would | :37:36. | :37:41.
have asked to go? Absolutely not. Because she would have known it | :37:41. | :37:45.
would be unsafe? She would, not the way she was dressed. She would not | :37:45. | :37:51.
go to places like that. Shrien's recollection of this time | :37:51. | :37:55.
is of himself and Anni being distracted, looking through their | :37:55. | :37:59.
money moon pictures. We were sat in the back of the car, looking | :37:59. | :38:05.
through our photographs, the driver suggested we drive through one of | :38:06. | :38:10.
the township areas. For the second time that night, Tongo drove the | :38:10. | :38:19.
couple into Gugulethu township, where Qwabe and Mngeni were waiting. | :38:19. | :38:23.
The first Shrien says he knew of the hijack was when a man started | :38:23. | :38:31.
banging a pistol on the taxi's windscreen. I was instructed to | :38:31. | :38:35.
open the doors, Qwabe getting in the driver's side, and Mngeni | :38:35. | :38:40.
getting in the back. I grabbed Anni and I covered her, and held her | :38:40. | :38:45.
tight, because she was starting to cry. Shrien says Anni head her | :38:45. | :38:48.
wedding and engagment rings in the gap between the car seats, where | :38:48. | :38:58.
:38:58. | :38:58. | ||
they were later found by police. Her wedding rings, especially her | :38:58. | :39:01.
engagment ring were the most valuable thing to her in the world, | :39:01. | :39:07.
giving it to her was the best moment of my life. The rings not | :39:07. | :39:10.
being stolen made Anni's family suspicious. If it was a robbery, | :39:10. | :39:15.
the rings weren't stolen, they were expensive rings, 25,000 worth of | :39:15. | :39:21.
rings. It wasn't stolen? That didn't make sense. | :39:21. | :39:26.
Shrien says he did hand over around 4,000 Rand in cash, roughly 400. | :39:26. | :39:31.
Why he was carrying so much has not been explained. He says the gunmen | :39:31. | :39:40.
became threatening on discovering his hidden mobile phone. He said he | :39:40. | :39:43.
would shoot me. He had no hesitation in what he was saying or | :39:43. | :39:49.
doing. He was very sure of his actions. | :39:49. | :39:56.
Qwabe travelled for a short distance before he stopped. Zola | :39:56. | :40:01.
Tongo was then ejected from his own taxi, right outside Gugulethu | :40:01. | :40:05.
police barracks. The gunmen took his mobile phone, why, if he was in | :40:05. | :40:11.
on the plot, was Shrien Dewani not thrown out at the same time. Tongo | :40:11. | :40:17.
informed us that the money was behind the front passenger seat. | :40:17. | :40:22.
the gunmen drove off in the night, Tongo used the phone in the | :40:22. | :40:27.
barracks to alert local police, he did not call South African's | :40:27. | :40:33.
equivalent of 999, buying his acomplises extra time. Anni had | :40:33. | :40:37.
been getting increasingly more hysterical as the driving went on. | :40:37. | :40:41.
She wouldn't stop saying to them, we are on honeymoon, just let us go, | :40:41. | :40:47.
we don't have anything. The gunmen drove into the darkness of their | :40:47. | :40:52.
home turf, Khayelitsha township. They were saying to me, make her | :40:52. | :41:02.
:41:02. | :41:03. | ||
shut up. But we will shoot. About half an hour after the car was | :41:03. | :41:07.
first hijacked, it was Shrien's turn to leave. I was holding on to | :41:07. | :41:12.
her, hanging on to her, and they priced us apart, they held a gun to | :41:12. | :41:16.
my head, and said either leave or we will shoot you. Shrien says the | :41:16. | :41:20.
back door would not open, and he was eventually forced out of the | :41:20. | :41:24.
window, begging the gunmen to let Anni go as well. | :41:24. | :41:29.
For Anni's family, Shrien's explanation is suspicious. The rear | :41:29. | :41:36.
window of a Volkswagen Sharan only opens 34cms. I have tried it. | :41:36. | :41:40.
tried it? I tried it. With a car window that was open the same | :41:41. | :41:48.
distance? Same car, I'm not that big. But I had pain in my shoulders, | :41:48. | :41:52.
and enormous pain, my shoes couldn't come out, I dropped them | :41:52. | :41:57.
off in the car. It is impossible. So was Shrien forced out of the | :41:57. | :42:02.
vehicle here, or did he leave of his own volition. This is what the | :42:02. | :42:07.
driver Qwabe told the police, following his arrest shortly after | :42:07. | :42:11.
Anni's death. It has never before been made public. We ordered the | :42:11. | :42:16.
husband out of the car. Three months later, this version was made | :42:16. | :42:21.
public by police and prosecutors. We let the husband out of the | :42:21. | :42:26.
vehicle. Ordered or let, it is just a word, | :42:26. | :42:31.
but one makes Shrien Dewani a victim, and the other a murderer, | :42:31. | :42:37.
so why the change. Unlike Tongo, who was dropped off | :42:37. | :42:43.
at a police barracks, Shrien was now alone in a township notorious | :42:43. | :42:49.
locally for gun violence. The car sped off, my heart was racing, the | :42:49. | :42:53.
first thing I did was shout for help. Luckily for Shrien, help was | :42:53. | :43:03.
:43:03. | :43:04. | ||
at hand. A local Government auditor was just arriving home in his car. | :43:04. | :43:11.
I was about to pull in and park the car, he came closer to me. He could | :43:11. | :43:17.
ask me to take him to the police station. The vast sprawl of | :43:17. | :43:21.
Khayelitsha township, is criss- crossed with a network of police | :43:21. | :43:30.
stations. Simelane called his cousin, an officer based nearby. | :43:30. | :43:34.
was pacing up and down the road, and he was short of like shaking, I | :43:34. | :43:40.
thought he was crying. He says Shrien became frantic the | :43:40. | :43:45.
police were taking so long to arrive. Did his behaviour that | :43:45. | :43:53.
night seem authentic. When I found out I was a bit surprised. When he | :43:53. | :43:57.
told me his story that night, I believed him, and I thought what he | :43:57. | :44:02.
was saying it was all the truth. It was genuine. | :44:02. | :44:07.
Simbonile Matokazi and his wife are the only independent eyewitnesses | :44:07. | :44:13.
to gauge Shrien's immediate reaction to the hijack. I don't | :44:13. | :44:21.
think this guy had killed his wife. You know. | :44:21. | :44:26.
While Shrien was waiting for police to arrive, Anni may already have | :44:26. | :44:32.
been dead. He says he still believed she would survive. They | :44:32. | :44:36.
said they didn't want to hurt her, so where were they going to leave | :44:36. | :44:41.
her. I heard a shot go off in the back of the vehicle, Mngeni was | :44:41. | :44:44.
still holding the female passenger at gun point, I was scared and | :44:44. | :44:51.
nervous, I parked the vehicle on the side of the road. This is where | :44:51. | :44:59.
the car came to a halt. And it was here Anni's life ended. Why kill | :44:59. | :45:06.
only the girl? There is something fishy here. We have spoken to an | :45:06. | :45:11.
eyewitness who saw the killers dump Tongo's taxi, never imagining a | :45:11. | :45:15.
woman had just been shot. Two men emerged from the vehicle, they | :45:15. | :45:19.
walked towards this street corner, one of them doubled back, went back | :45:19. | :45:23.
to the vehicle, opened the door, and pulled out a brown paper | :45:23. | :45:27.
envelope, they were both described as very relaxed, as they walked | :45:27. | :45:31.
towards the witness here on the street corner, even saying to the | :45:31. | :45:38.
person, "how are you", before disappearing off down that street. | :45:38. | :45:41.
The witness has never been questioned by police, yet their | :45:41. | :45:45.
evidence, if accurate, seems to support the prosecution case. So | :45:45. | :45:49.
what was in that brown paper envelope, and had Shrien left it | :45:49. | :45:56.
for these calm, casual killers? When first interviewed by police, | :45:56. | :46:01.
the driver, Qwabe, told detectives Anni's death had been accidental. | :46:01. | :46:07.
We had not planned to kill the deceased, but rather to con Zola, | :46:07. | :46:11.
by just dumping the lady and the car, and taken the money Zola would | :46:11. | :46:17.
have left in the car for us. Since her murder, South African police | :46:17. | :46:20.
have consistently stated that Anni Dewani was killed by a single | :46:20. | :46:24.
gunshot wound to the neck. Combined with the findings that Anni was | :46:24. | :46:30.
shot sexually assaulted, it seems, clear cut, this was a cold blooded | :46:30. | :46:34.
execution. But Panorama has seen the postmortem report, it reveals | :46:34. | :46:40.
that the South African's -- South African police's description of the | :46:40. | :46:46.
fatal injury is incomplete. We have learned the 9mm bullet first | :46:46. | :46:51.
travelled through Anni's left hand beforele travelling into her chest, | :46:51. | :46:58.
it travelled up her body and causing fatal injuries to her neck, | :46:58. | :47:03.
before leaving an irregular neck wound. It was not a straight | :47:03. | :47:06.
forward execution shot to the neck. It raises questions could Anni have | :47:06. | :47:13.
been trying to escape or fight off her attacker when she was shot? | :47:13. | :47:18.
When arrested Mngeni told the police the gun fired as Anni's bag | :47:18. | :47:26.
was grabbed. After a fruitless search for Anni, | :47:26. | :47:32.
police took Shrien back to the Cape Grace Hotel. | :47:32. | :47:38.
These pictures were captured at just after 1.00am, Shrien appears | :47:38. | :47:43.
upset, he called Anni's father during these early hours. Shrien | :47:43. | :47:51.
said, dad, I'm sorry, I could not take care of Anni. At that time it | :47:52. | :47:56.
wasn't confirmed she was dead. But I told him, straight away, don't | :47:56. | :48:02.
say that, she's not dead yet. Shrien emerged from their room, | :48:02. | :48:10.
holding a tissue. Just look at the expression there, now is that a man | :48:10. | :48:17.
who was commissioning the murder of his wife, or is that a man in shock | :48:17. | :48:20.
because he simply does not know what has just happened, and where | :48:20. | :48:30.
:48:30. | :48:31. | ||
she has gone. Shrien was told Anni's body had | :48:31. | :48:35.
been discovered on Sunday morning, he says he started screaming | :48:35. | :48:45.
:48:45. | :48:48. | ||
hysterically. Tongo was nearby. When we found out that Anni had | :48:48. | :48:55.
been shot, he started to cry as well. Everyone was coming to | :48:55. | :49:05.
:49:05. | :49:07. | ||
console me. I think he was one of those people. Tongo was he at the | :49:07. | :49:12.
hotel to help police with photofits of the men -- Tongo was at the | :49:12. | :49:17.
hotel to help the police with photofits of the men he said had | :49:17. | :49:22.
taken Anni. Anni's father was given the terrible news while on route to | :49:23. | :49:27.
South Africa. The flight was a nightmare. Because you knew there | :49:27. | :49:34.
was no hope? I knew Anni was dead. It was the worst thing I have ever | :49:34. | :49:44.
:49:44. | :49:47. | ||
Two days later, hours before Shrien left South Africa with Anni's body, | :49:47. | :49:52.
he had one final meeting with Zola Robert Tongo at the Cape Grace. | :49:52. | :49:56.
Tongo, seen here in white, was, at the time, still a robbery victim, a | :49:56. | :50:02.
witness, not a suspect. I met up with Shrien Dewani at the | :50:02. | :50:07.
hotel, why I received a 1,000 Rand payment for my role in | :50:07. | :50:13.
orchestrating the murder, robbery and kidnapping of the d deceased. | :50:13. | :50:18.
Was this payment, as Tongo claims, for his part in Anni's murder, or | :50:18. | :50:23.
cash for the innocent services of a tour guide. Shrien, holding a white | :50:23. | :50:27.
plastic bag, met Tongo in the lobby, and then disappeared from view into | :50:27. | :50:34.
the Cape Grace's internet room. It is one of the few public places in | :50:34. | :50:38.
the hotel where there is no CCTV. If he was simply paying Tongo as a | :50:38. | :50:44.
tour guide, why did Shrien bring him in here to give him the cash? | :50:44. | :50:48.
They were in the room together just over a minute. Shrien leaves first, | :50:48. | :50:56.
without the white plastic bag. Tongo, ten seconds later. | :50:56. | :51:00.
Zola emerges with the plastic bag, it is secreted under his shirt. He | :51:00. | :51:08.
goes into the gents. But, Panorama can reveal the secret meeting | :51:08. | :51:13.
wasn't so secret afterall. This mystery couple went in before them, | :51:13. | :51:17.
and exited after both men had left. So the handover took place in front | :51:17. | :51:27.
of witnesses. Have police spoken to them? Zola Tongo left the hotel | :51:27. | :51:31.
with the bag in clear view. South African prosecutors maintain the | :51:31. | :51:36.
taxi driver was in severe financial difficulties at the time, and | :51:36. | :51:40.
Shrien Dewani exploited this. was supporting his mum, in addition | :51:40. | :51:48.
to having his own expenses, as well as his teenage sister. I suppose | :51:48. | :51:54.
temptation got the better of him. Still, 1,000 Rand, around about 90 | :51:54. | :52:00.
doesn't sound very tempting. His former boss is perplexed. What | :52:00. | :52:05.
baffles me most about this case is the fact that Robert has taken such | :52:05. | :52:15.
:52:15. | :52:16. | ||
a big risk for 1,000 Rand. His monthly earnings was ten to fifteen | :52:17. | :52:23.
times that amount. To kill someone for 1,000 Rand, it just doesn't | :52:23. | :52:27.
make sense at all. And what happened to the 5,000 Rand fee | :52:27. | :52:32.
Tongo claims was agreed with Shrien Dewani? In a follow up statement, | :52:32. | :52:36.
Zola has claimed he counted the money and then went looking for | :52:36. | :52:42.
Shrien when he realised he had been short changed. The CCTV reveals | :52:42. | :52:48.
that to be untrue. Tongo handed himself in to police | :52:48. | :52:53.
six days after Anni's body was found. The gunmen and the driver | :52:53. | :52:58.
had already been arrested, both have since retracted their | :52:58. | :53:00.
confessions, saying they were beaten out of them. They plan to | :53:00. | :53:05.
plead not guilty at their trial. Qwabe's lawyer says his client was | :53:05. | :53:11.
forced to make a confession, scripted to police instructions. | :53:11. | :53:16.
The beating was continuous, they would not let him go without making | :53:16. | :53:22.
a statement. I have done a lot of cases where police have assaulted | :53:22. | :53:28.
clients, so it is almost like business as usual for the police to | :53:28. | :53:32.
do that. Police deny beating the men. Mngeni struggles to get in and | :53:32. | :53:36.
out of court, having undergone surgery on a brain tumour, | :53:36. | :53:40.
diagnosed while awaiting trial. The pair have now been on remand for 16 | :53:40. | :53:45.
months, with no trial date in sight, their confessions doing them no | :53:45. | :53:50.
favours. Unlike Tongo, the day after his | :53:50. | :53:55.
arrest, and having been shown the evidence against him by police, | :53:55. | :53:59.
including CCTV material, the taxi driver cut a deal to plead guilty. | :53:59. | :54:03.
In return for testifying against Shrien Dewani, Tongo was given | :54:03. | :54:11.
seven years off a 25-year sentence, and he could be free in just eight. | :54:11. | :54:17.
Anni's father had to agree to Tongo's plea bargain. | :54:17. | :54:21.
The prosecution asked me do you approve of this, if he tells the | :54:21. | :54:29.
truth. I said, yes, I want to know the truth, what happened to my Anni. | :54:29. | :54:35.
Monde Mbolombo, the middle man, without whom the murder could not | :54:35. | :54:39.
have happened, has secured the best deal of all. By giving evidence for | :54:39. | :54:43.
the prosecution, he has escaped scot free, without a stain on his | :54:43. | :54:48.
character. Why are the South Africans happy to offer plea | :54:48. | :54:51.
bargains and immunity from prosecution to those who have | :54:51. | :54:56.
admitted their involvements in Anni's murder. Why are they | :54:56. | :54:59.
apparently willing to overlook inconsistencies in the evidence. | :54:59. | :55:04.
Why are they so certain that Shrien Dewani is guilty, without having | :55:04. | :55:08.
ever interviewed him as a suspect, despite repeated opportunities to | :55:08. | :55:11.
do so. Neither the police nor the | :55:11. | :55:16.
prosecuting authorities would talk to us ahead of any trial. South | :55:16. | :55:20.
African's Justice Minister, is, however, adamant, the courts will | :55:21. | :55:23.
guarantee his country's judicial integrity. Our courts are | :55:24. | :55:28.
independent, they are subject to the constitution and the law. So, | :55:28. | :55:32.
as far as we are concerned, Mr Dewani, if he comes before a | :55:32. | :55:38.
competent court in South Africa, will receive a fair trial. But, | :55:38. | :55:41.
according to some, it is not the courts that are barriers to a fair | :55:41. | :55:47.
trial, but the police and prosecutors. | :55:47. | :55:53.
I have my trust in the judges of this country, I have little trust | :55:53. | :55:59.
in the police. The objectivity is a major problem. | :55:59. | :56:06.
And I have often seen that they take sides. There is not enough | :56:06. | :56:09.
attention spent investigating right at the beginning to see who is | :56:09. | :56:19.
actually telling the truth. Within a week of Anni's death, with | :56:19. | :56:24.
rumours swelling around he was responsible, Shrien Dewani was | :56:24. | :56:29.
adamant he didn't kill his wife. Any insinnation that I had anything | :56:29. | :56:34.
to do -- insinuation that I had anything to do with this is absurd, | :56:34. | :56:37.
what does anyone have to gain from killing someone they have just | :56:37. | :56:42.
married and trying to set up a life with. Still battling mental | :56:42. | :56:47.
illnesses, Shrien Dewani vows to clear his name. His family told | :56:47. | :56:50.
Panorama he will return to South Africa when he's well enough, until | :56:50. | :56:53.
then he will fight a ruling by a British court that it is in the | :56:53. | :56:57.
public interest he be extradited. They say his personal safety is at | :56:57. | :57:02.
risk. This doesn't cut any ice with the man Shrien once called dad. | :57:03. | :57:08.
can't be in a mental hospital and clear your name. You have to go to | :57:08. | :57:11.
South Africa. You say, you say you are innocent, you have nothing to | :57:11. | :57:17.
do with this. Why don't you go? Because there are questions for | :57:17. | :57:21.
Shrien Dewani too. Why cash up so much money in the last days of | :57:21. | :57:28.
their money moon? If, as Tongo claims, the two men exchanged texts | :57:28. | :57:34.
with Anni in the car, what was it they didn't want her to know. And | :57:34. | :57:37.
did Shrien Dewani leave an envelope of cash in the taxi, if so, what | :57:37. | :57:44.
was that money for. At the Cape Grace there were some | :57:44. | :57:50.
key witnesses. The CCTV cameras. On the night Anni died, do they | :57:50. | :57:56.
capture what no-one else seems to have seen. Is this the truth about | :57:56. | :58:06.
:58:06. | :58:11. | ||
the couple's relationship? Kisses. Lots of them. Were the Dewanis, | :58:11. | :58:18. |
