The American presidential election is just weeks away,

0:00:020:00:05

but tonight we take on a subject both candidates are keen to avoid.

0:00:050:00:10

That translates pretty much everywhere in the world.

0:00:120:00:15

Everyone knows that language.

0:00:150:00:16

We examine the gun laws that allowed this grandfather

0:00:160:00:21

to act as judge and executioner.

0:00:210:00:23

How the same law protected the man

0:00:290:00:32

who shot dead this unarmed teenager.

0:00:320:00:35

And I grabbed it and I just grabbed my firearm and I shot him.

0:00:350:00:39

They told him, "You killed him,

0:00:390:00:41

"you stand your ground, go home. Take a shower."

0:00:410:00:44

No justice! No peace!

0:00:440:00:47

Why the shooting of that teenager became a political issue

0:00:470:00:50

dividing America.

0:00:500:00:53

If I had a son, he'd look like Trayvon.

0:00:530:00:55

We're going to get to the bottom of exactly what happened.

0:00:550:00:58

And how those laws are sponsored by corporate money,

0:00:580:01:01

influencing American democracy.

0:01:010:01:04

In some regards, democracy is increasingly, in this country,

0:01:040:01:08

for sale.

0:01:080:01:10

It's election time in America.

0:01:240:01:26

RECORDED VOICES: I'm Barack Obama, and I approve this message.

0:01:260:01:30

People still believe in hard work,

0:01:300:01:32

in personal responsibility.

0:01:320:01:34

Mitt Romney has said, "To strengthen this nation,

0:01:340:01:37

"we have to begin by strengthening the family."

0:01:370:01:40

'I'm here to investigate the country's fascination with guns

0:01:400:01:44

'and the most controversial gun crime in recent history.'

0:01:440:01:47

'There's almost 90 guns per 100 people in America now.

0:01:490:01:53

'Here in Florida alone,

0:01:530:01:54

'almost a million people now have a concealed weapon's permit.

0:01:540:01:59

'In most states, those over 18 can walk into a gun shop

0:02:000:02:05

'and buy a firearm.'

0:02:050:02:07

You've got some impressive weapons here.

0:02:070:02:10

Most of the guns we're showing are not for hunting

0:02:100:02:13

-but they're for self-defence.

-OK.

0:02:130:02:17

This shop sells a huge arsenal of weapons,

0:02:170:02:20

including handguns, rifles and shotguns.

0:02:200:02:24

That must be one of the best guns for home protection.

0:02:240:02:27

Several leading gun magazines have written articles about it.

0:02:270:02:31

And what is that gun?

0:02:310:02:33

-It's a 12-gauge shotgun, pump.

-OK.

0:02:330:02:36

What you do is you load it,

0:02:360:02:39

but you don't put one in the chamber.

0:02:390:02:41

What happens is if somebody's breaking into your house...

0:02:410:02:44

GUN CLICKS

0:02:440:02:45

That translates pretty much everywhere in the world.

0:02:450:02:48

Everybody knows that language.

0:02:480:02:50

All these weapons can be bought by American citizens

0:02:510:02:54

without the need for a licence

0:02:540:02:56

after a simple background check.

0:02:560:02:58

Such easy access to firearms is killing innocent people.

0:03:000:03:04

In the past seven years, there have been 26 mass shootings in America.

0:03:040:03:08

In July, a gunman killed 12

0:03:080:03:12

and injured 58 people in Colorado,

0:03:120:03:14

during a midnight screening of the new Batman film.

0:03:140:03:18

In August, another gunman shot and killed six people

0:03:180:03:21

at a Sikh temple in Wisconsin.

0:03:210:03:23

Nearly 100,000 Americans are injured or killed by guns

0:03:250:03:28

every year.

0:03:280:03:30

All these shootings hit the headlines,

0:03:310:03:34

but there was one this year that caused the biggest outcry.

0:03:340:03:37

NEWSREADER: Today's unprecedented tragedy was shocking...

0:03:370:03:41

Last night thousands gathered...

0:03:420:03:45

Protest over the shooting dead of Trayvon Martin

0:03:450:03:47

moved to Miami, Florida, on Sunday...

0:03:470:03:50

There are even social media sites demanding justice...

0:03:500:03:52

The story of Trayvon Martin

0:03:530:03:57

starts on a rainy night in Florida.

0:03:570:03:59

The 17-year-old schoolboy was staying with his dad

0:03:590:04:03

in a gated community in Sanford.

0:04:030:04:06

During that time, CCTV captures Trayvon in a dark grey hoodie,

0:04:070:04:12

visiting a 7/11 store

0:04:120:04:15

to buy a can of iced tea and a packet of sweets.

0:04:150:04:17

On his way home,

0:04:190:04:21

he's spotted by 28-year-old George Zimmerman,

0:04:210:04:24

the Neighbourhood Watchman.

0:04:240:04:26

Zimmerman was carrying a concealed handgun,

0:04:260:04:30

something that is perfectly legal in 49 states across America.

0:04:300:04:34

Zimmerman called the police.

0:04:350:04:37

He looks black.

0:04:470:04:49

The dispatcher says the police are on their way,

0:04:510:04:54

but Zimmerman still gets out of his car.

0:04:540:04:57

Zimmerman's version of the events

0:05:030:05:06

is that he was knocked down as he challenged Martin

0:05:060:05:09

and was then attacked on the ground.

0:05:090:05:12

A neighbour hears screams and calls the police.

0:05:120:05:15

Just one.

0:05:350:05:37

Trayvon Martin, who had no criminal convictions,

0:05:370:05:41

died from a single shotgun to the chest,

0:05:410:05:43

fired at close range.

0:05:430:05:45

It's an unreal feeling.

0:05:460:05:48

You just got news that your child's life has been taken

0:05:500:05:54

and at that moment everything stops.

0:05:540:05:59

I tried to get myself together

0:05:590:06:01

so I can call his mom

0:06:010:06:03

and inform her

0:06:030:06:05

that your child is dead.

0:06:050:06:07

I was at work, in my car.

0:06:070:06:10

I didn't believe him.

0:06:100:06:14

I asked him if he'd seen the body,

0:06:140:06:16

and he said no.

0:06:160:06:17

He seen a picture.

0:06:170:06:19

I still didn't believe him.

0:06:190:06:22

Paramedics treated the gunman, Zimmerman, at the scene

0:06:240:06:28

for a bleeding nose

0:06:280:06:30

and lacerations to the back of his head.

0:06:300:06:33

He was handcuffed and taken away.

0:06:340:06:37

Robert Zimmerman was brought to this police station,

0:06:380:06:41

questioned, but released without charge.

0:06:410:06:43

The local police chief was asked to explain.

0:06:440:06:47

In this case,

0:06:470:06:50

Mr Zimmerman has made a statement of self-defence.

0:06:500:06:53

Until we can establish probable cause to dispute that,

0:06:530:06:58

we don't have the grounds to arrest him.

0:06:580:07:01

The decision to release him raised questions

0:07:020:07:05

about a controversial self-defence law

0:07:050:07:08

that allows a person to use deadly force

0:07:080:07:10

to prevent death or great bodily harm.

0:07:100:07:12

It's commonly known as the Stand Your Ground law.

0:07:120:07:16

This gated community is where George Zimmerman

0:07:200:07:24

shot dead Trayvon Martin.

0:07:240:07:27

The law that allowed him to walk free

0:07:270:07:29

expanded a centuries-old British legal principle

0:07:290:07:33

that also grants immunity from arrest and prosecution.

0:07:330:07:37

The shooting dead of Trayvon Martin at this very spot

0:07:380:07:42

inside this gated community

0:07:420:07:45

polarised America on issues like racism,

0:07:450:07:48

justice and gun control.

0:07:480:07:51

Sanford's Afro-American community believed justice had not been done

0:07:560:08:00

and that Zimmerman had profiled Martin

0:08:000:08:03

as a criminal because he was black and wearing a hoodie.

0:08:030:08:06

I think it was racially motivated.

0:08:080:08:10

You have a child here who did not have a gun,

0:08:100:08:12

who did not have drugs.

0:08:120:08:14

All he was doing was trying to get home,

0:08:140:08:16

from going to the 7/11, buying some Skittles and ice tea

0:08:160:08:19

for him and his little brother.

0:08:190:08:21

He should not have been killed.

0:08:210:08:24

Justice for Trayvon! Justice for Trayvon!

0:08:240:08:27

The Stand Your Ground defence outraged people across America,

0:08:270:08:31

who demanded the prosecution of George Zimmerman,

0:08:310:08:34

so that the circumstances of Martin's death

0:08:340:08:37

could be tested in court.

0:08:370:08:39

Trayvon could've been anyone of us.

0:08:400:08:43

Trayvon represents a reckless disregard for our lives

0:08:440:08:50

that we've seen too long.

0:08:500:08:53

Arrest Zimmerman now!

0:08:530:08:55

The reason there was outrage

0:08:560:08:58

is because the police let him walk out of there free.

0:08:580:09:01

Had they arrested Zimmerman that night,

0:09:010:09:04

there wouldn't have been a movement.

0:09:040:09:06

There wouldn't have been a cause of protest.

0:09:060:09:08

Zimmerman violated the law, in my opinion.

0:09:080:09:11

They told him, "You killed him, stand your ground,

0:09:110:09:14

"go home, take a shower."

0:09:140:09:16

Zimmerman, seen here on the left with his brother,

0:09:170:09:20

was vilified as the white man who shot an innocent black boy.

0:09:200:09:24

In fact, he has a Peruvian mother and a white father.

0:09:240:09:27

George isn't a racist, I'm not a racist.

0:09:290:09:32

We grew up in a bi-cultural family. That means two colours.

0:09:320:09:36

Gladys Zimmerman, his mother,

0:09:360:09:38

agreed to talk to me provided we did not reveal her identity,

0:09:380:09:42

as she fears reprisals.

0:09:420:09:45

The only thing that makes him a racist

0:09:450:09:47

is the agenda,

0:09:470:09:49

the political agenda

0:09:490:09:52

and the money agenda.

0:09:520:09:55

It makes me feel that there is no way to defend somebody

0:09:560:10:00

when you said "racist."

0:10:000:10:03

For a while, the case overshadowed the presidential campaign.

0:10:050:10:09

It was also being played out

0:10:090:10:11

here in Florida, the key swing state

0:10:110:10:14

that neither of the presidential candidates can afford to lose.

0:10:140:10:18

So no surprise that both candidates intervened.

0:10:180:10:23

If I had a son, he'd look like Trayvon.

0:10:230:10:26

And I think they're right

0:10:260:10:30

to expect that all of us, as Americans,

0:10:300:10:36

are going to take this with the seriousness it deserves

0:10:360:10:40

and that we're going to get to the bottom of exactly what happened.

0:10:400:10:43

Mindful of Florida's black vote,

0:10:450:10:47

Republican presidential candidate, also set out his stall.

0:10:470:10:51

We hope that justice is done in this case, as in all cases.

0:10:540:10:57

But very, very tragic,

0:10:570:10:59

and our hearts go out to his family, his loved ones,

0:10:590:11:03

his friends. This shouldn't have happened.

0:11:030:11:05

The pressure from politicians and protesters

0:11:090:11:12

led to the sacking of the chief of police,

0:11:120:11:14

and the state prosecutor quitting the case.

0:11:140:11:18

Mr Zimmerman, you are appearing here for the first time

0:11:180:11:22

for a charge of murder in the second degree...

0:11:220:11:25

44 days after the shooting,

0:11:250:11:27

a newly appointed prosecution team discounted

0:11:270:11:29

the Stand Your Ground defence

0:11:290:11:32

and had Zimmerman arrested and charged.

0:11:320:11:34

I don't think without the public support

0:11:350:11:39

we would've gotten an arrest.

0:11:390:11:42

I felt as though it should've been an arrest made that night.

0:11:420:11:47

George Zimmerman,

0:11:490:11:52

seen here describing the moment he shot Trayvon,

0:11:520:11:54

maintains he acted in self-defence and stood his ground.

0:11:540:11:57

His family have no regrets that he carried a concealed weapon.

0:11:570:12:02

I'm glad George had a weapon on him that night.

0:12:050:12:08

That means that George is still with us.

0:12:080:12:10

I believe he would've been far more seriously injured,

0:12:100:12:13

disfigured or damaged in other ways

0:12:130:12:17

did he not have that weapon.

0:12:170:12:19

# I'll stand my ground

0:12:220:12:24

# And I won't back down... #

0:12:240:12:27

'The Stand Your Ground law

0:12:270:12:28

'has spread across nearly half the states in America.'

0:12:280:12:31

Texas adopted it in 2007.

0:12:310:12:34

Since then, so-called justifiable killings have increased

0:12:360:12:40

from 32 in 2006

0:12:400:12:43

to 48 in 2010.

0:12:430:12:45

At this firing range, gun owners are trained

0:12:520:12:55

to handle and fire a gun

0:12:550:12:57

to protect themselves.

0:12:570:12:59

If you have somebody that is threatening your life,

0:13:000:13:03

you're in fear for your life,

0:13:030:13:05

your safety, your family, OK?

0:13:050:13:08

At that point then you have the right to use deadly force, OK?

0:13:080:13:13

In one of the most notorious cases in Texas,

0:13:170:13:20

a grandfather did just that,

0:13:200:13:22

but he used a more deadly weapon in defence of property.

0:13:220:13:25

'The Pasadena police took me back to the scene of a double killing,

0:13:310:13:35

'where the Stand Your Ground law

0:13:350:13:37

'protected another shooter.'

0:13:370:13:39

-This is the road where it all happened?

-Right.

0:13:410:13:46

-Just beyond the white SUV.

-OK, so that...

0:13:460:13:49

That was Joe Horn's house,

0:13:490:13:50

and where the white SUV is, is the location

0:13:500:13:52

that was being burglarised,

0:13:520:13:54

as it was being witnessed by Mr Horn.

0:13:540:13:56

He indicated that his belief that the suspects

0:13:560:13:59

had actually emerged from between the two houses.

0:13:590:14:02

It was these two men

0:14:030:14:05

Joe Horn spotted coming out of his next-door neighbour's home.

0:14:050:14:10

My God, they're breaking into the house.

0:14:100:14:13

You can't imagine...

0:14:130:14:15

The fear that comes over you,

0:14:150:14:18

seeing something like that, in real life, right in front of your eyes.

0:14:180:14:22

He called the police

0:14:220:14:24

before reaching for his shot gun.

0:14:240:14:27

The 911 operator tried to prevent a confrontation.

0:14:410:14:46

The Stand Your Ground law had been introduced just a few weeks earlier.

0:15:040:15:09

Horn openly argued it gave him the right to use deadly force.

0:15:090:15:14

The individual who ran off in this direction was shot

0:15:280:15:32

directly in the back.

0:15:320:15:34

The individual who ran off on an angle this way,

0:15:340:15:38

he was actually shot in the left arm and in the back.

0:15:380:15:42

Both men were unarmed and died at the scene.

0:15:450:15:47

Nobody fights! Nobody fights!

0:15:500:15:54

In an echo of the '60s civil rights movement,

0:15:540:15:57

African Americans took to the streets in protest.

0:15:570:16:01

If it isn't about race, why are you in a white neighbourhood?!

0:16:010:16:05

Tell us why you're here today, please!

0:16:050:16:08

A grand jury ruled the shootings were justifiable homicides.

0:16:080:16:13

Horn was treated like a hero at a rally held by the Conservative

0:16:130:16:17

Tea Party movement.

0:16:170:16:19

I saw what I thought was the right thing to do and I did it.

0:16:190:16:22

It's unfortunate that it turned out the way that it did,

0:16:220:16:25

but that's just the way that it is. CHEERING

0:16:250:16:28

Joe Horn agreed to meet me in Pasadena to talk about

0:16:320:16:36

what happened that day.

0:16:360:16:38

Some have accused you of being the judge, the jury and executioner.

0:16:380:16:42

How do you respond to that?

0:16:420:16:45

If you're going to call me a judge, jury and executioner,

0:16:450:16:47

the only thing I'm trying to do is save my life.

0:16:470:16:49

I'm just a regular father, grandfather kind of guy.

0:16:490:16:52

You know, I didn't ask for this. You think I wanted this? No.

0:16:520:16:58

You think that I would rush out in there like a vigilante

0:16:580:17:01

and try and do something? No. No.

0:17:010:17:05

I'm just a man that got caught in something

0:17:050:17:08

and just didn't want to die, that's all.

0:17:080:17:12

The shift in people's mindset

0:17:150:17:17

since the Stand Your Ground law was introduced, is having

0:17:170:17:21

a measurable effect in terms of death rates.

0:17:210:17:23

In terms of homicide, what we show is that there is about an 8%

0:17:250:17:29

increase in the homicide rate caused by these laws and if we were to break

0:17:290:17:34

that down, that breaks down to about 600 additional homicides per year

0:17:340:17:38

across the 21 states that adopted these laws over the time period.

0:17:380:17:42

I wanted to find out how such an extreme law came about.

0:17:440:17:48

The story starts back in storm lashed Florida with the man

0:17:480:17:52

who first proposed the Stand Your Ground bill which

0:17:520:17:56

passed into law unopposed in 2005.

0:17:560:17:59

We had just gone through five hurricanes in Florida

0:18:010:18:05

and it had created a lot of disruption,

0:18:050:18:08

a lot of broken up housing

0:18:080:18:10

and communities that were in disarray.

0:18:100:18:13

A lot of looting that was occurring. Many people felt vulnerable.

0:18:130:18:18

The bill was co-written by the National Rifle Association.

0:18:250:18:28

It's the most powerful pro-gun lobby in America with

0:18:280:18:31

nearly 4,000,000 members and a budget of up to 300 million.

0:18:310:18:36

Some of that money is spent on ads like this.

0:18:360:18:39

In Florida, I want law-abiding citizens to know that

0:18:450:18:49

if they're doing the right thing, if they're doing nothing wrong,

0:18:490:18:53

and they come under attack, that we are going to stand with them.

0:18:530:18:57

I truly believe that the statute has helped make us as a safer state.

0:18:570:19:04

The Sunshine State became the gunshine state

0:19:070:19:10

and it was just the beginning.

0:19:100:19:12

The Stand Your Ground legislation first introduced in Florida

0:19:150:19:19

has been adopted by more than 20 states across America.

0:19:190:19:22

The driving force has been private business, lobbyists and state

0:19:220:19:26

legislators who behind closed doors create what they call model bills.

0:19:260:19:32

A key organisation pushing these model bills through state

0:19:340:19:37

lawmakers, where they're supported by both Republicans and Democrats,

0:19:370:19:41

is based here on the 11th floor

0:19:410:19:43

of this non-descript building in Washington.

0:19:430:19:47

It's the American Legislative Exchange Council.

0:19:470:19:51

Otherwise known as ALEC,

0:19:510:19:52

an umbrella group promoting a conservative pro-business agenda.

0:19:520:19:58

ALEC is really a corporate bill mill, largely funded by corporations.

0:19:580:20:02

98% of its funding comes from corporations

0:20:020:20:04

and sources other than legislators.

0:20:040:20:06

Through ALEC, corporations are given equal say

0:20:060:20:09

and equal vote on model changes to our laws.

0:20:090:20:12

# I'm just a bill Yes I'm only a bill

0:20:140:20:17

# And I'm sitting here on Capitol Hill

0:20:170:20:21

-# Well it's a long, long... #

-CRASHING

0:20:210:20:25

This cartoon was created by critics of ALEC to expose the unhealthy

0:20:260:20:30

relationship between legislators, the NRA and corporations.

0:20:300:20:36

See, it works like this nowadays.

0:20:360:20:38

Once the politicians have been wined and dined, little campaign

0:20:380:20:42

contribution here, a good time there, the politicians, ahem, legislators,

0:20:420:20:47

head back to their capitals or Congress

0:20:470:20:50

and fast track as many of these bills as they can.

0:20:500:20:52

ALEC has an overall budget of 7 million

0:20:530:20:57

and over 2,000 members or sponsors, including some of the UK's

0:20:570:21:01

biggest corporations, BP, AstraZeneca and GlaxoSmithKline.

0:21:010:21:08

All three companies told Panorama they have had

0:21:080:21:11

no involvement in supporting the Stand Your Ground law.

0:21:110:21:16

British corporations and other corporations are underwriting

0:21:160:21:19

ALEC's overall agenda and so while they may not be designating

0:21:190:21:23

money for this particular bill in Florida, or other bills,

0:21:230:21:26

what they're doing is making this agenda possible.

0:21:260:21:29

Their money helps support ALEC's overall operations,

0:21:290:21:32

its propaganda machine, and its efforts to get these bills

0:21:320:21:35

pushed in state houses across the country.

0:21:350:21:37

By now, you know that I get to help vigilante types kill unarmed people.

0:21:370:21:41

And the best part is, it's perfectly legal!

0:21:410:21:45

ALEC's push of these unforgiving laws has been

0:21:450:21:48

described as a licence to kill.

0:21:480:21:51

Thanks to my friends at the NRA and ALEC who write the laws and then

0:21:510:21:55

feed them to politicians all over the country, if you feel threatened

0:21:550:21:57

by a punk packing dangerous Skittles, shoot, shoot, shoot!

0:21:570:22:01

GUNSHOT

0:22:010:22:03

Critics say the power of money is accelerating the spread of bad law

0:22:040:22:09

and undermining American democracy.

0:22:090:22:12

We've reached a point in this state

0:22:130:22:15

and in this country where legislators and congressmen

0:22:150:22:18

and congresswomen aren't the ones writing their bills any more,

0:22:180:22:21

the corporations or these think-tanks are, and that's a scary thought.

0:22:210:22:24

Even scarier still, if they don't even know what's in them.

0:22:240:22:27

In some regards,

0:22:270:22:28

democracy is increasingly in this country for sale.

0:22:280:22:32

During my time in America, yet another shooting hit the headlines.

0:22:330:22:38

This time in New York, where a gunman was shot

0:22:380:22:40

dead by the police after killing a work colleague.

0:22:400:22:44

There's mounting pressure for the presidential candidates

0:22:450:22:48

to tackle extreme gun violence.

0:22:480:22:51

TV: Hurricane Centre - Isaac continues to move sort of parallel to

0:22:510:22:55

the North Coast of Cuba.

0:22:550:22:57

I travelled to the Republican Convention in storm-hit Tampa

0:22:590:23:04

to see if it was on the agenda.

0:23:040:23:06

You'd think that the Trayvon Martin case

0:23:060:23:09

and the Colorado massacre as well as other recent shootings

0:23:090:23:12

in America would firmly place gun control on the political agenda.

0:23:120:23:17

But it's just one issue they're not discussing here.

0:23:170:23:20

Some political commentators covering the presidential race know

0:23:200:23:25

only too well why the candidates duck the issue.

0:23:250:23:28

They're afraid, they're afraid to lose voters.

0:23:290:23:33

It's the rare politician in America, even liberal politicians,

0:23:330:23:37

who will vocally support increased gun control.

0:23:370:23:42

Usually the only ones who would do that are African-American

0:23:420:23:45

politicians in urban districts where violence is so high

0:23:450:23:50

that people know the price they pay for the easy access to guns.

0:23:500:23:56

The number one cause of death of black teenagers in America

0:23:590:24:03

is gun homicide.

0:24:030:24:06

Yet Barack Obama, the great wordsmith,

0:24:060:24:09

has been surprisingly quiet on this issue.

0:24:090:24:12

Alongside the gun lobby,

0:24:120:24:15

the Republican presidential candidate has spoken

0:24:150:24:18

not for more gun control, but in support of the NRA and gun owners.

0:24:180:24:23

We need a president who will stand up for the rights of hunters

0:24:230:24:27

and sportsmen and those who seek to protect their homes

0:24:270:24:29

and their families. President Obama has not. I will.

0:24:290:24:33

Under threat of a boycott of their products by opponents

0:24:330:24:37

of the Stand Your Ground law,

0:24:370:24:39

more than 40 global corporations including Walmart, Coca-Cola

0:24:390:24:44

and Amazon have bowed out

0:24:440:24:46

of the American Legislative Exchange Council.

0:24:460:24:49

After the Trayvon Martin shooting, the mainstream media started

0:24:510:24:55

paying closer attention to what ALEC was, so since that bright

0:24:550:24:59

light of the media started shining on ALEC, public-facing companies

0:24:590:25:04

have indicated that they do not want to be associated with ALEC.

0:25:040:25:08

The NRA and ALEC declined our request for an interview,

0:25:100:25:14

but ALEC told us it had no current policies relating

0:25:140:25:17

to Stand Your Ground. It's disbanded the task force that spread

0:25:170:25:21

the legislation across America.

0:25:210:25:25

Here at the Tallahassee State Capitol in Florida,

0:25:260:25:29

back where it all started, the local governor

0:25:290:25:33

and the United States Commission on Civil Rights are to review

0:25:330:25:36

the impact of the Stand Your Ground law.

0:25:360:25:40

My client wants to make a statement.

0:25:400:25:42

George Zimmerman's lawyer says the now-toxic law will not be

0:25:420:25:46

a part of his defence.

0:25:460:25:47

What I'm going to have is a self defence immunity hearing,

0:25:470:25:50

because we are not going to say that George Zimmerman took

0:25:500:25:54

the benefit of the Stand Your Ground statute

0:25:540:25:56

and stood his ground against Trayvon Martin without retreating.

0:25:560:26:01

What we're going to say, and I think what the evidence will support,

0:26:030:26:06

is that George Zimmerman didn't have an opportunity to retreat

0:26:060:26:10

because he was on the ground.

0:26:100:26:12

GOSPEL SINGING

0:26:150:26:17

Eight months since Trayvon Martin died,

0:26:170:26:19

at the local church in Tallahassee,

0:26:190:26:23

his family have come to focus the fight to overturn Stand Your Ground.

0:26:230:26:28

As the presidential elections approach,

0:26:280:26:31

there's a growing anger at a democratic

0:26:310:26:34

and lawmaking process over which this community feel powerless.

0:26:340:26:39

We cannot have law that speaks to the gunsmoke mentality.

0:26:430:26:47

ALL: Amen!

0:26:470:26:49

Your son's death cannot be in vain.

0:26:490:26:53

ALL: Amen!

0:26:530:26:55

We'll do our best to look at the Stand Your Ground law.

0:26:550:27:00

Because we don't need another Trayvon Martin.

0:27:000:27:03

ALL: Amen!

0:27:030:27:04

APPLAUSE

0:27:040:27:06

The thing we're seeking most is justice for all. Equal justice.

0:27:080:27:13

We cannot look at this and say that it's OK to kill

0:27:130:27:19

brown, black, children, and everything is going to be OK.

0:27:190:27:24

It's not OK. We just are hoping for justice.

0:27:240:27:29

The Stand Your Ground laws, Trayvon Martin case

0:27:320:27:34

and other recent shootings here in America will not

0:27:340:27:37

be on the mind of the president voted into the White House.

0:27:370:27:40

Guns are a part of American culture.

0:27:400:27:43

And American people believe in standing their ground.

0:27:430:27:46

But the question surrounding the use of deadly force may be

0:27:460:27:49

a problem the new president can no longer ignore.

0:27:490:27:54

George Zimmerman is free on bail and will come to trial early next year.

0:27:550:28:00

Whatever the outcome, it will not reduce gun ownership.

0:28:000:28:04

There are about 300 million legally owned firearms in the states.

0:28:080:28:12

-GUNSHOT

-That's nearly enough to arm every man, woman and child in America.

0:28:130:28:18

Next week in Gambling Nation,

0:28:210:28:23

we ask, is the proliferation of gambling

0:28:230:28:25

bringing misery to increasing numbers of problem gamblers

0:28:250:28:29

and are these machines a cause of crime and disorder?
