Can a drug addict mother change? | 0:00:02 | 0:00:04
Or should the state take away her baby? | 0:00:05 | 0:00:08
More children were taken into care last year than ever before, | 0:00:10 | 0:00:13
with many cases directly linked to substance misuse. | 0:00:13 | 0:00:17
With addiction fuelling a care crisis, should mothers | 0:00:19 | 0:00:23
be given the chance to turn things around and keep their kids? | 0:00:23 | 0:00:28
Panorama investigates these last chance mums. | 0:00:28 | 0:00:32
It's thought that one in 20 pregnant women in the UK | 0:00:42 | 0:00:45
are addicted to drugs or alcohol. | 0:00:45 | 0:00:47
If they don't get clean, their children can be taken into care. | 0:00:50 | 0:00:53
Almost half of drug-using mums | 0:00:56 | 0:00:59
don't have their children living with them. | 0:00:59 | 0:01:01
But research has shown that mothers who are allowed to remain | 0:01:02 | 0:01:05
with their kids are much more likely to try and fight their addiction. | 0:01:05 | 0:01:09
About 10 years ago, there were quite a lot of rehabs that worked | 0:01:11 | 0:01:15
with women and children, but over the years, due to funding cuts | 0:01:15 | 0:01:20
and various other reasons, one by one, they've closed. | 0:01:20 | 0:01:23
In terms of a unit that's just working with mothers and children, | 0:01:23 | 0:01:27
I believe we're the only one. | 0:01:27 | 0:01:29
Trevi House in Plymouth is one of the last rehab units in the UK | 0:01:32 | 0:01:37
that allows mothers to keep their children | 0:01:37 | 0:01:39
while they try to get clean. | 0:01:39 | 0:01:41
The majority of women that come into Trevi | 0:01:44 | 0:01:47
have either been on heroin or crack cocaine, or both. | 0:01:47 | 0:01:52
Women are referred through the courts or social services. | 0:01:54 | 0:01:57
It takes 3-6 months to complete treatment, | 0:01:58 | 0:02:01
and costs up to £38,000, | 0:02:01 | 0:02:04
which needs to be funded by their local authority. | 0:02:04 | 0:02:07
Residents here follow a strict programme of detox therapy | 0:02:12 | 0:02:15
and parenting support. | 0:02:15 | 0:02:17
Come in! | 0:02:17 | 0:02:18
Women and children are under 24/7 observation by the 30-strong team, | 0:02:23 | 0:02:28
made up of nursery workers, therapists and support staff. | 0:02:28 | 0:02:31
Doing chores and looking after the communal areas are also | 0:02:35 | 0:02:38
an important aspect of life here, | 0:02:38 | 0:02:41
helping to build a sense of community. | 0:02:41 | 0:02:44
-Your cleaning is perfect. -Always is. | 0:02:44 | 0:02:46
Cos I'm a good girl. | 0:02:46 | 0:02:48
But everybody is aware of the strict house rules. | 0:02:48 | 0:02:52
If a woman uses drugs, uses alcohol, the placement is ended. | 0:02:52 | 0:02:57
And there's no negotiating around that, there's no discussion. | 0:02:57 | 0:03:03
For most families, that means that a child is removed. | 0:03:03 | 0:03:08
For the women here, | 0:03:09 | 0:03:10
this is likely to be the last chance to keep their children. | 0:03:10 | 0:03:13
How did you do that? | 0:03:15 | 0:03:17
How did you do that? | 0:03:17 | 0:03:19
We joined Leanne, 37, four months into her treatment. | 0:03:19 | 0:03:24
All right, my darling. | 0:03:26 | 0:03:27
Her smile, it lights up my day. | 0:03:27 | 0:03:29
I get more of a buzz off of her smile | 0:03:29 | 0:03:32
than I did off of any drugs. | 0:03:32 | 0:03:34
Leanne first took heroin when she was just 18. | 0:03:34 | 0:03:37
And then, after a number of years clean, began using again | 0:03:38 | 0:03:42
when she got into a relationship with the father of her child. | 0:03:42 | 0:03:47
It's not easy, here. It's not... It's not a holiday camp. | 0:03:47 | 0:03:50
They put you through a lot of, um... | 0:03:51 | 0:03:54
..dealing with your problems. | 0:03:55 | 0:03:57
And you get a lot of negative feedback, cos obviously, | 0:03:58 | 0:04:02
to get here in the first place, a lot of bad stuff's happened. | 0:04:02 | 0:04:05
Leanne must prove she can get clean and be a fit mother for her baby. | 0:04:07 | 0:04:12
If I leave before my time's up, I signed an agreement saying | 0:04:12 | 0:04:17
that I would be walking out of the gate without her. | 0:04:17 | 0:04:20
And I'm not going to do that. | 0:04:21 | 0:04:23
No. | 0:04:23 | 0:04:25 | |
BABY CRIES | 0:04:25 | 0:04:28
Leanne has already had one child removed from her care, | 0:04:28 | 0:04:32
and was addicted to both drugs and alcohol. | 0:04:32 | 0:04:35
I was on heroin, but I was smoking weed, as well, and drinking. | 0:04:39 | 0:04:45
And on Valium, diazepam. | 0:04:45 | 0:04:47
My skin was all grey. I was as skinny as anything. I was... | 0:04:47 | 0:04:53
I was wearing 13-year-old clothes at 37. | 0:04:53 | 0:04:55
As soon as Leanne found out she was pregnant, | 0:04:59 | 0:05:02
she was put on methadone, | 0:05:02 | 0:05:04
a drug commonly used to wean people off heroin. | 0:05:04 | 0:05:07
SHE WHISPERS TO BABY | 0:05:08 | 0:05:10
Have you got your plan upstairs? | 0:05:10 | 0:05:12
Methadone is itself addictive, | 0:05:14 | 0:05:16
so a specialist team administer the drug | 0:05:16 | 0:05:18
and supervise the detox process. | 0:05:18 | 0:05:20
Get every last drop down. | 0:05:22 | 0:05:23
Soon, Leanne's methadone will be stopped | 0:05:24 | 0:05:26
and one of the hardest parts of her recovery will begin. | 0:05:26 | 0:05:30
If she relapses, | 0:05:31 | 0:05:32
her daughter will be removed from her care immediately. | 0:05:32 | 0:05:36
On your feet. That one, on your feet. | 0:05:42 | 0:05:44
No? All right. | 0:05:44 | 0:05:46
Hayley is 37 and three months into her programme. | 0:05:47 | 0:05:51
I was a greedy addict. | 0:05:53 | 0:05:55
Heroin, crack cocaine, spice, weed, | 0:05:55 | 0:05:58
and I was also drinking. | 0:05:58 | 0:06:00
She has had six children. | 0:06:02 | 0:06:04
Three of them are in care. | 0:06:04 | 0:06:06
When one-year-old Codie was born, | 0:06:08 | 0:06:10
he was made the subject of a child protection order. | 0:06:10 | 0:06:12
There's a lot of things in my life I don't like talking about, | 0:06:15 | 0:06:18
cos obviously, it... | 0:06:18 | 0:06:19
..shouldn't have happened, and... | 0:06:21 | 0:06:23
Yeah. | 0:06:25 | 0:06:26 | |
Before coming here, Hayley was addicted to heroin for 22 years. | 0:06:26 | 0:06:30
I just wish I could turn back time and realise, you know, | 0:06:32 | 0:06:37
what I was doing wasn't covering pain. | 0:06:37 | 0:06:41
It wasn't replacing anything. | 0:06:41 | 0:06:45
It was just making things worse, really. | 0:06:45 | 0:06:47
CODIE BABBLES | 0:06:47 | 0:06:51
It was quite mad, because when I had my other kids, | 0:06:51 | 0:06:54
giving up wasn't an option. | 0:06:54 | 0:06:56
-It wasn't enough to give up back then... -CODIE COUGHS AND GURGLES | 0:06:57 | 0:07:03
..like, for the kids or even for myself. | 0:07:03 | 0:07:07
But then when I found out I was 20, 24 weeks pregnant | 0:07:07 | 0:07:11
and didn't even know. I was living out on the streets at the time. | 0:07:11 | 0:07:14
I don't know, something just switched in... | 0:07:14 | 0:07:18
CHILD GURGLES | 0:07:18 | 0:07:20
Time to grow up and fix all the wrongs to rights. | 0:07:20 | 0:07:26
CHILD SQUEALS HAPPILY | 0:07:28 | 0:07:30
One in four mothers who have a child taken into care | 0:07:30 | 0:07:33
go on to have more children. | 0:07:33 | 0:07:35
Lots of the women we assess have had previous children removed. | 0:07:40 | 0:07:44
Why is this the time that's going to be different? | 0:07:44 | 0:07:47
Not all applications to Trevi House are successful. | 0:07:47 | 0:07:51
To secure a place, | 0:07:51 | 0:07:52
women must convince the assessment team that they are ready to change. | 0:07:52 | 0:07:56
It's a big day for Leanne. | 0:08:04 | 0:08:06
Another couple of weeks have passed, | 0:08:06 | 0:08:08
and the time has come for her to take her last dose of methadone. | 0:08:08 | 0:08:11
-Last 5ml? -It is. | 0:08:13 | 0:08:15
My last 5ml! | 0:08:15 | 0:08:17
-She won't remember any of this. -She's so clever. | 0:08:17 | 0:08:20
Woohoo! | 0:08:29 | 0:08:30
Give Mummy a clap. Yay! | 0:08:30 | 0:08:31
-APPLAUSE -I'll give myself a clap. | 0:08:31 | 0:08:34
Yeah, the methadone is finished. | 0:08:37 | 0:08:40
How do you feel? | 0:08:41 | 0:08:43
Yeah, I feel fine. | 0:08:43 | 0:08:46
-Are you excited? -Yeah. | 0:08:46 | 0:08:49
I'm fine. | 0:08:49 | 0:08:50
Thank you. Enjoy your cake, there. | 0:08:53 | 0:08:55
-SHE LAUGHS -Oh, thank you. | 0:08:55 | 0:08:57
I feel a bit like a weight's been lifted off me. | 0:09:02 | 0:09:05
Oh, it's all strange. | 0:09:05 | 0:09:07
I don't know how I'll feel tomorrow... | 0:09:07 | 0:09:08
SEAGULLS SQUAWK | 0:09:08 | 0:09:11
..but I'll probably be the same, because I've had enough. | 0:09:11 | 0:09:16
Tomorrow will be the first time in years that she will be drug-free. | 0:09:16 | 0:09:20
Key to the unique approach here is the children being nearby. | 0:09:27 | 0:09:32
They are looked after in the on-site nursery | 0:09:32 | 0:09:34
while the mothers attend therapy. | 0:09:34 | 0:09:36
There are two sessions a day and both are mandatory. | 0:09:42 | 0:09:45
Today's group is being run by key worker Lee. | 0:09:48 | 0:09:51
Does anyone know what a genogram is? | 0:09:53 | 0:09:55
It's a diagram just help us to see the, sort of, make-up of our family. | 0:09:55 | 0:10:00
-This way? -Yeah. | 0:10:00 | 0:10:02
This session is looking at family patterns. | 0:10:02 | 0:10:05
All right? | 0:10:05 | 0:10:07
Is this really relevant to our treatment? | 0:10:07 | 0:10:09
-Mmm. -Truthfully? -Yeah. | 0:10:09 | 0:10:10
So this is Hayley's...Hayley's genogram, and her family tree. | 0:10:10 | 0:10:14
So, this is for anybody in the family | 0:10:14 | 0:10:17
that's had any...any issues with substance abuse. | 0:10:17 | 0:10:21
And the next one is, all right, domestic abuse, OK? | 0:10:22 | 0:10:26
And me. | 0:10:29 | 0:10:31
And mental health issues. | 0:10:31 | 0:10:33
Forcing the women to look at their complex pasts is an important | 0:10:35 | 0:10:38
part of recovery. | 0:10:38 | 0:10:40
This has been quite difficult for you, hasn't it? | 0:10:42 | 0:10:44
Because this is connecting to, you know, your mum, | 0:10:44 | 0:10:46
who obviously you've called a slut. | 0:10:46 | 0:10:48
-I imagine... -She's not my mum. -Yeah. | 0:10:48 | 0:10:50
-She don't deserve the title of mum. -Yeah, yeah. | 0:10:50 | 0:10:54
-And that's the impact she's had, isn't it? -Mm-hmm. | 0:10:54 | 0:10:58
So how did her alcohol use affect you? | 0:10:58 | 0:11:01
She used to get pissed up with the bloke that used to abuse me, | 0:11:01 | 0:11:06
and then, like, she didn't care just to | 0:11:06 | 0:11:08
-chuck me over to that house to get abused. -Yeah. | 0:11:08 | 0:11:12
She just didn't have a care in the world. | 0:11:12 | 0:11:14
-Yeah. -The thing we got was slaps, torture and given over to perverts. | 0:11:14 | 0:11:20
That's all we got from that woman, | 0:11:20 | 0:11:23
and a load of lies. | 0:11:23 | 0:11:25
This group isn't about blame in any way whatsoever. | 0:11:26 | 0:11:31
It's clear that Hayley's family history is particularly troubled. | 0:11:31 | 0:11:34
When I was really young, I was sexually abused nearly every day, | 0:11:37 | 0:11:45
from the age of about five, six till I was 14. | 0:11:45 | 0:11:50
Erm... It went to court. | 0:11:50 | 0:11:53
He got eight years. | 0:11:53 | 0:11:55
Hayley is not alone. | 0:11:55 | 0:11:58
Most women who come here are victims of abuse or domestic violence, | 0:11:58 | 0:12:03
including Leanne. | 0:12:03 | 0:12:05
I got pregnant, | 0:12:07 | 0:12:10
and her dad was very violent. | 0:12:10 | 0:12:15
He was... He was hitting me a lot before the pregnancy, | 0:12:15 | 0:12:18
but when I got pregnant, the violence got ten times worse. | 0:12:18 | 0:12:25
Leanne was subject to systematic domestic abuse | 0:12:25 | 0:12:28
at the hands of her ex-partner. | 0:12:28 | 0:12:30
He started shattering bones in my face, | 0:12:31 | 0:12:34
and strangling me unconscious, | 0:12:34 | 0:12:37
and kicking me down the stairs when I was pregnant. | 0:12:37 | 0:12:41
One attack was so vicious, Leanne ended up in hospital for 26 days, | 0:12:41 | 0:12:46
and her partner was arrested. | 0:12:46 | 0:12:48
Yeah. | 0:12:54 | 0:12:56 | |
Yeah, I'm very nervous about doing it, to be honest. | 0:12:56 | 0:12:59
I know I'm not in trouble but I'm going to feel like I am. | 0:12:59 | 0:13:02
She's speaking to the Victim Support team, | 0:13:03 | 0:13:05
as she will need to testify at his trial. | 0:13:05 | 0:13:08
Yeah, she's going to ring Plymouth Crown Court and set up | 0:13:11 | 0:13:15
a video link, and then there'll be no-one in and around the court. | 0:13:15 | 0:13:19
I just can't relive it all, no. | 0:13:19 | 0:13:21
And the barristers, they'll bring up everything, | 0:13:21 | 0:13:24
cos they're...they're clever people as well, | 0:13:24 | 0:13:27
and they will bring up everything. | 0:13:27 | 0:13:29
Come and see us if you need anything, all right? | 0:13:29 | 0:13:31
-All right. I'll see you. -Bye. | 0:13:31 | 0:13:33
Rachel's here tonight till 9.00. | 0:13:33 | 0:13:36
Support for women here isn't limited to the rehabilitation process. | 0:13:36 | 0:13:40
They also help residents handling issues | 0:13:40 | 0:13:42
not directly related to drug use. | 0:13:42 | 0:13:44
I'd rather on Thursday, | 0:13:44 | 0:13:47
but he could be back, and then I can't... | 0:13:47 | 0:13:49
Today, Leanne must go to court and give evidence | 0:14:01 | 0:14:04
against her ex-partner using a video link. | 0:14:04 | 0:14:07
Key worker Kerry goes with her. | 0:14:08 | 0:14:11
I used to say, you will kill the baby, | 0:14:14 | 0:14:17
stop hitting me, you will kill the baby and he... | 0:14:17 | 0:14:19
..used to do it worse. | 0:14:22 | 0:14:24
Just got to remember those reasons you told me | 0:14:28 | 0:14:30
on the phone last night as to why you are here. | 0:14:30 | 0:14:33
Despite all the help they get, 40% of women who come here | 0:14:42 | 0:14:45
fail to complete the programme, and leave without their children. | 0:14:45 | 0:14:50
Hayley is struggling, and she has told staff she wants to leave. | 0:14:54 | 0:14:58
I've said before, though, | 0:15:01 | 0:15:02
I've said to you, all of you, is when people have walked out... | 0:15:02 | 0:15:05
Everyone that's ever walked out has regretted it and | 0:15:08 | 0:15:10
they've phoned up either the same day or the following day and said, | 0:15:10 | 0:15:14
"I've really made a big mistake, can I come back?" | 0:15:14 | 0:15:17
To be honest, I didn't think it would be that hard. | 0:15:18 | 0:15:21
If Hayley walks out, she risks Codie being removed from her care. | 0:15:22 | 0:15:26
I know you are struggling now but you have still done a good job | 0:15:27 | 0:15:30
because you have dealt with things in a different way. | 0:15:30 | 0:15:34
You have actually learned some strategies already. | 0:15:34 | 0:15:38
We show you these techniques, you've got to practise them, | 0:15:38 | 0:15:41
-you know what I mean? It's like anything, you know. -Yeah. | 0:15:41 | 0:15:45
I want to be a decent mum. | 0:15:45 | 0:15:47
Which I wasn't in the past, do you know what I mean? | 0:15:47 | 0:15:51
And I want to be clean, I want to stay clean. | 0:15:51 | 0:15:53
In the future you'll look back and this is the making of you. | 0:15:53 | 0:15:58
The next few days will be critical... | 0:16:03 | 0:16:05
..and Hayley isn't the only one finding it tough. | 0:16:06 | 0:16:09
Leanne being disengaged | 0:16:16 | 0:16:18
and she was late for collecting baby four times. | 0:16:18 | 0:16:22
At a weekly family review meeting, | 0:16:22 | 0:16:24
staff are worried Leanne is not coping. | 0:16:24 | 0:16:27
Staff worked to continue to support with baby overnight. | 0:16:27 | 0:16:30
Staff regularly assess mother and baby's progress. | 0:16:32 | 0:16:35
The child's welfare is paramount. | 0:16:35 | 0:16:37
-HS voiced that Leanne had told her -(MUTED) -had been wearing the same | 0:16:39 | 0:16:43
baby grow for 48 hours. Nursery staff confirmed that this was true. | 0:16:43 | 0:16:47
L voiced that she appreciate it | 0:16:47 | 0:16:49
but felt bad as he hadn't had a bath in over a week. | 0:16:49 | 0:16:53
Wasn't a particularly a good week for Leanne, last week. | 0:16:53 | 0:16:57
Tuesday got a phone call early in the morning saying that | 0:16:57 | 0:17:01
Leanne wanted to leave and she was going to leave. | 0:17:01 | 0:17:04
-TSWs had phoned me, legally she cannot leave with -(MUTED). | 0:17:04 | 0:17:08
I met with her in the morning and basically said to her, | 0:17:08 | 0:17:12
-you can leave but -(MUTED) -will be staying here at Trevi | 0:17:12 | 0:17:17
and they would look at placing her into foster care. | 0:17:17 | 0:17:20
Leanne's lack of hygiene are red flags for the Trevi team. | 0:17:26 | 0:17:29
And social services have been informed. | 0:17:29 | 0:17:31
If she doesn't turn things around, her placement will be ended | 0:17:34 | 0:17:38
and her child will be removed from her care. | 0:17:38 | 0:17:42
Oi! Come and see what I've got. | 0:17:42 | 0:17:46
Mash up. | 0:17:49 | 0:17:50
Lee's one-to-one with Hayley has had an impact, | 0:17:51 | 0:17:55
and she has decided to stay. | 0:17:55 | 0:17:57
Dealing with the past. | 0:17:59 | 0:18:01
All them feelings I've pushed down for so many years. | 0:18:03 | 0:18:09
Facing... | 0:18:09 | 0:18:10
..shit that has happened. | 0:18:12 | 0:18:16
Finding out why it happened. | 0:18:16 | 0:18:18
Understanding it a bit more. | 0:18:19 | 0:18:22
I can build a life. | 0:18:26 | 0:18:28
I've just got to stay strong and fight through it. | 0:18:28 | 0:18:31
Hayley has got another 10 weeks until she leaves Trevi House. | 0:18:34 | 0:18:39
Leaving comes with its own risks. | 0:18:39 | 0:18:41
Many ex-residents relocate to Plymouth and there is | 0:18:43 | 0:18:46
an ongoing support network to help them once they've left. | 0:18:46 | 0:18:49
The pressure is on, when you have kids... | 0:18:51 | 0:18:54
Today, Hayley is meeting ex-residents Rosie and Emma. | 0:18:54 | 0:18:58
It wasn't always easy, | 0:18:58 | 0:19:00
the first year of leaving Trevi was really, really challenging for me. | 0:19:00 | 0:19:05
Really, really challenging. | 0:19:05 | 0:19:06
Because I was trying to cope with everything myself | 0:19:06 | 0:19:09
and I just thought, "I'm OK, I'm OK" and actually | 0:19:09 | 0:19:11
I needed more support than I was admitting I needed to myself. | 0:19:11 | 0:19:16
It is OK not to be OK. | 0:19:16 | 0:19:18
It is OK to be like, actually, I am not all right at the minute. | 0:19:18 | 0:19:22
I'm moving soon and I'm worried about it. | 0:19:22 | 0:19:25
What are you worried about? | 0:19:25 | 0:19:27
Like the last three days I thought getting clean, that's it done, | 0:19:27 | 0:19:32
but it's not. | 0:19:32 | 0:19:34
I have been craving horribly and people see craving | 0:19:34 | 0:19:37
come and go but it is stuck with me for three days now. | 0:19:37 | 0:19:40
Dealing with addiction is a daily battle. | 0:19:40 | 0:19:43
If you sat here and told me you never ever think about a drink or a drug | 0:19:44 | 0:19:48
or you didn't ever feel like doing it I would think you are a liar. | 0:19:48 | 0:19:53
I know it sounds mean but my other kids have been through | 0:19:53 | 0:19:56
some shit and I just don't want it for Codie. | 0:19:56 | 0:19:59
But I'm scared. I am, I'm scared. | 0:19:59 | 0:20:04
I'm scared to be clean, I'm scared to find out who I am. | 0:20:04 | 0:20:09
I had fear, fear of failing. Everything. | 0:20:09 | 0:20:12
Fear of life, isn't it? | 0:20:12 | 0:20:14
You know I had doubts, | 0:20:14 | 0:20:17
I felt all of that but I continued despite all of that... | 0:20:17 | 0:20:20
..because of my son. | 0:20:20 | 0:20:22
And what you have got which is the bit that gets women through | 0:20:22 | 0:20:27
is that sheer bloody determination to do it for your boy. | 0:20:27 | 0:20:31
That tenacity, that fight. | 0:20:31 | 0:20:34
A few days after the family review and with the court case | 0:20:43 | 0:20:46
and detox behind her, Leanne is coping much better. | 0:20:46 | 0:20:51
And in two weeks she will be ready to leave. | 0:20:51 | 0:20:53
You do work through a lot of things here, not just detox. | 0:20:55 | 0:20:59
The detox is just on top of everything else. | 0:20:59 | 0:21:03
And when you're working through your emotions as well | 0:21:03 | 0:21:06
and dealing with life in a different way, | 0:21:06 | 0:21:07
looking at life from a different angle, it's hard. | 0:21:07 | 0:21:11
Hayley is close to finishing her treatment, so she's allowed | 0:21:14 | 0:21:17
to attend her brother's wedding without supervision. | 0:21:17 | 0:21:20
-I forgot you're short, Mum, sorry. -Shut up. | 0:21:21 | 0:21:23
THEY LAUGH | 0:21:23 | 0:21:24
Right, get those bloody leggings off. | 0:21:24 | 0:21:26
Now you're going to have to stand up now, love. | 0:21:28 | 0:21:31
Beryl, who has been like a grandmother to Hayley, | 0:21:31 | 0:21:34
helps her get ready. | 0:21:34 | 0:21:35
BERYL SIGHS | 0:21:35 | 0:21:37
She was always up to something. | 0:21:37 | 0:21:41
-Supposed to have been at school, weren't you? -Mmm. | 0:21:42 | 0:21:46
And where were you? | 0:21:46 | 0:21:47
-On the field smoking a spliff, Mum. -Yeah, or at mine. -Or at yours. | 0:21:49 | 0:21:53
I was worried about her when she started on the drugs. | 0:21:55 | 0:21:59
And now she's completely different and, yeah, I am very proud of her. | 0:21:59 | 0:22:05
You've done us all proud. | 0:22:07 | 0:22:08
It is just a shame that she had to see me at that part. | 0:22:11 | 0:22:16
And what did I say to you many years ago? | 0:22:16 | 0:22:18
-"You'll wake up one day." -Yeah. | 0:22:19 | 0:22:22
Hayley lived on the streets here for four years. | 0:22:25 | 0:22:28
Being back in the city where she suffered abuse, | 0:23:01 | 0:23:03
and clean for the first time, has been a true test. | 0:23:03 | 0:23:07
CHEERING | 0:23:07 | 0:23:08
Six months after she walked into Trevi House, | 0:23:15 | 0:23:18
pregnant and on methadone, | 0:23:18 | 0:23:20
the time has come for Leanne to say goodbye. | 0:23:20 | 0:23:23
Now, you've had your ups and downs and, you know, some difficult times, | 0:23:24 | 0:23:28
you know, you're going through the detox and everything like that. | 0:23:28 | 0:23:31
I believe that you're going to go out there | 0:23:31 | 0:23:33
-and be a fantastic mum to your daughter. -Thank you. | 0:23:33 | 0:23:36
Leanne has successfully completed her programme and will be | 0:23:36 | 0:23:40
allowed to keep her baby, as long as she remains drug-free. | 0:23:40 | 0:23:44
Do you know what? It says that they're sorry you're leaving, yeah? | 0:23:44 | 0:23:47
-I'm not sorry, I'm gutted. -Aw. | 0:23:47 | 0:23:48
Cos I think you're mint, do you know what I mean? | 0:23:48 | 0:23:52
But I still think you ought to stay, just for me. | 0:23:52 | 0:23:55
Aw. | 0:23:55 | 0:23:56 | |
The friendships the women build are an important part of their recovery. | 0:23:56 | 0:24:01
Leanne, it's now time for you to go. | 0:24:01 | 0:24:04
It's been a pleasure to meet you and I wanted you to know. | 0:24:04 | 0:24:07
Remember life isn't easy, no matter where you are. | 0:24:07 | 0:24:10
But the gates to Trevi are never far. | 0:24:10 | 0:24:12
THEY LAUGH | 0:24:12 | 0:24:14
Cheers. | 0:24:14 | 0:24:15
Trevi House will continue to support her, even after she leaves, | 0:24:15 | 0:24:19
with regular contact and updates. | 0:24:19 | 0:24:21
But with just ten beds, most addicted mothers aren't as lucky as Leanne. | 0:24:23 | 0:24:28
Why is it important that we as a society have to carry on | 0:24:28 | 0:24:34
giving chances to women like you? | 0:24:34 | 0:24:36
For people like me, that want their children, that want to do it, | 0:24:36 | 0:24:40
cos we do want to do it and, well, there's | 0:24:40 | 0:24:44
plenty of women out there that do want their children | 0:24:44 | 0:24:47
and aren't just coming here for silly reasons. | 0:24:47 | 0:24:50
They are coming here to sort their life out, | 0:24:50 | 0:24:52
to deal with their emotions and leave with their children. | 0:24:52 | 0:24:56
Oh, there's Nemo. | 0:24:56 | 0:24:57
A six-month placement here is expensive for cash-strapped councils. | 0:24:58 | 0:25:04
It's not a cheap answer, Trevi House. | 0:25:04 | 0:25:07
It's a lot of money. | 0:25:07 | 0:25:08
But when you look at the bigger picture, it's a | 0:25:08 | 0:25:11
really worthwhile investment. | 0:25:11 | 0:25:14
Care can cost in the hundreds of thousands per child. | 0:25:14 | 0:25:17
This approach gives families the chance to break the cycle. | 0:25:17 | 0:25:21
Mum stops using drugs. The child doesn't end up in care. | 0:25:22 | 0:25:27
And actually, long-term, | 0:25:27 | 0:25:30
it's an investment that saves money the whole way across the system. | 0:25:30 | 0:25:35
But with not all mothers successfully completing | 0:25:36 | 0:25:38
the programme, it's a risk some local authorities won't take. | 0:25:38 | 0:25:43
People say to me time and time again, | 0:25:43 | 0:25:46
"You must have a waiting list as long as your arm." | 0:25:46 | 0:25:49
As I sit here and talk to you, we're half-full | 0:25:49 | 0:25:52
and that's the reality. | 0:25:52 | 0:25:53
Hayley's hard work has paid off. | 0:25:57 | 0:26:00
CODIE GURGLES | 0:26:00 | 0:26:02
What is he telling you? | 0:26:02 | 0:26:04
I ain't got a bloody clue. | 0:26:04 | 0:26:06
SHE LAUGHS | 0:26:06 | 0:26:08
The aim for every resident is to prove she can be a fit mother, | 0:26:08 | 0:26:12
and to lower social services' involvement in her child's care. | 0:26:12 | 0:26:15
Can you tell me about what's happening on Monday? | 0:26:18 | 0:26:22
I am coming off of CP, | 0:26:22 | 0:26:25
and going on to Child in Need. | 0:26:25 | 0:26:28
What does that mean? | 0:26:28 | 0:26:30
It means that I just work with Trevi House, | 0:26:30 | 0:26:34
and I carry on doing what I'm doing with no social worker. | 0:26:34 | 0:26:39
Hayley is now trusted to look after her son with no | 0:26:41 | 0:26:44
involvement from social services. | 0:26:44 | 0:26:46
It's a fresh start. And he can have a life like he deserves. | 0:26:48 | 0:26:52
Yeah, and I can be a mum, finally, after all these years of battling it. | 0:26:56 | 0:27:01
I've done it. | 0:27:04 | 0:27:06
Dirty! | 0:27:06 | 0:27:07
Done it. I've got where I wanted to be. | 0:27:09 | 0:27:12
Done it. | 0:27:12 | 0:27:14
Who said people like us can't do it, eh? | 0:27:14 | 0:27:16
Set your head to it, you can do it. | 0:27:16 | 0:27:19 |
