GUNFIRE. OH, MY GOD, THEY'RE SHOOTING BACK-AND-FORTH. So many | :00:00. | :00:19.
lives ended in minutes. We have shots fired. You're requested to | :00:20. | :00:22.
stay back, don't enter the scene. People killed by a gunman who fired | :00:23. | :00:29.
into crowds without mercy. We'd hear gunshot after gunshot after gunshot, | :00:30. | :00:37.
pop, pop, pop. It is the dead least mass shooting in recent US history. | :00:38. | :00:42.
As they ran out of the bathroom into the hallway, he started shooting | :00:43. | :00:44.
them and killing them right. There But this is not a film about | :00:45. | :00:52.
the killer. I could care less about him. I don't care anything about | :00:53. | :00:55.
him. I don't want to speak his name. I don't want to see his picture. I | :00:56. | :00:59.
don't want to do any of that. It's about the people inside the club | :01:00. | :01:05.
when the shooting started. I just had to leave my eyes open because I | :01:06. | :01:08.
was scared if I blinked he was going to shoot me in my face. I'm looking | :01:09. | :01:16.
around like, this is actually happening, oh, my God. | :01:17. | :01:36.
MUSIC It's Saturday night in Orlando. | :01:37. | :01:44.
Around 300 people are in Pulse, a gay nightclub. We all had worked | :01:45. | :01:51.
during the day that day. We were all off that night. We decided to go out | :01:52. | :01:55.
and have a good time. 26-year-old Angel Colon is out with his friends. | :01:56. | :02:00.
We just had a good night. It was a nice night, very calm, very chilled. | :02:01. | :02:09.
There was no drama. Doorman, Imran Yousuf, has just started working at | :02:10. | :02:13.
Pulse. He's an ex-US marine who served in Afghanistan. Saturday | :02:14. | :02:18.
nights are a Latin night. My favourite night. I love the music. | :02:19. | :02:22.
So, it was regular night. Miguel Lieva is out celebrating. | :02:23. | :02:34.
He's just recovered from cancer. It was packed. I mean elbow to elbow, | :02:35. | :02:39.
people dancing. Everybody's having a good time. In town on holiday, best | :02:40. | :02:49.
friends Tiara Parker and Patience Carter. They're with Tiara's cousin, | :02:50. | :02:55.
Akyra Murray. Me and Tiara have always been best friends. When I got | :02:56. | :03:00.
invited on this vacation, I made it, like, one of my plans was to get to | :03:01. | :03:05.
know Akyra better. She was a funny person. Chef was really sweet. -- | :03:06. | :03:10.
she was really sweet. She captivated a room. I was just watching my | :03:11. | :03:16.
cousin and best friend. They were bonding. They were really enjoying | :03:17. | :03:21.
themselves. It was really a great night. We had the best time of our | :03:22. | :03:23.
lives. A gunman, armed with an assault | :03:24. | :03:42.
rifle and a handgun, walks into the club. Amanda Alvear is filming as | :03:43. | :03:53.
the shooting starts. Behind her people are being killed. Amanda | :03:54. | :03:59.
won't make it out alive either. We were on the main area, the main | :04:00. | :04:06.
floor, then out of nowhere we hear a big, loud gunshot. Was that really | :04:07. | :04:13.
gunshots? That's the only thing in my head. There's no way that was a | :04:14. | :04:17.
gunshot. There's no way. It kept going. We just start running and we | :04:18. | :04:27.
just hear gunshot after gunshot after gunshot - pop, pop, pop. I had | :04:28. | :04:34.
to take two steps into running and I was shot already. I can't move | :04:35. | :04:37.
anywhere, so I decided to take cover and stay on the floor. I'm looking | :04:38. | :04:40.
around and you just see the bodies flying down. He's shooting all over | :04:41. | :04:47.
the place. An off-duty police officer is outside the club. He | :04:48. | :04:52.
immediately looked where the gunshots were coming from and | :04:53. | :04:58.
engaged the suspect. The killer. He was armed with a handgun. The killer | :04:59. | :05:03.
was armed with a rifle, which is a lot more power than our handguns. | :05:04. | :05:11.
The shots started ringing out. We're like what is that? I stood froze. I | :05:12. | :05:18.
didn't know what to do. Then I realised that when the shots got | :05:19. | :05:24.
closer, I seen like wall chippings, like you know, I feel like wall | :05:25. | :05:28.
pieces are falling on my arms and I just couldn't believe what I was | :05:29. | :05:34.
seeing. Patience and Akyra manage to escape. I'm outside, but where's | :05:35. | :05:41.
Tiara? And she's like Tiara's inside. I'm just like, we've got to | :05:42. | :05:47.
go get Tiara. They go back into the club. It's a decision that will | :05:48. | :05:55.
change their lives. Inside the gunman is shooting into the crowd. | :05:56. | :05:59.
Imran is in a staff corridor at the back of the club. People started | :06:00. | :06:06.
pouring in. At this point, now, I'm cornered with everyone else and | :06:07. | :06:13.
we're all just like packed. It was distraught. Fear like you couldn't | :06:14. | :06:19.
even imagine, just eyes that were just bulging, just having no idea | :06:20. | :06:26.
what to do. They were just lost. Honestly, looking at those faces, | :06:27. | :06:31.
you can tell a lot of them accepted the reality. I mean, that they were | :06:32. | :06:36.
dead, there's no way out of here. But there is a way out, a security | :06:37. | :06:44.
door that club goers haven't seen. I am yelling, "Open the F-ing door." I | :06:45. | :06:50.
could hear the gunshots getting louder and closer. So, to me, it was | :06:51. | :06:58.
if I reach for this door, I'm going to get shot and die. I jumped over | :06:59. | :07:04.
the people that were there. I unlatched that door and I opened it. | :07:05. | :07:11.
Everyone started pouring out. The people caught in that corridor can | :07:12. | :07:18.
now get out. But dozens more are trapped in the toilets. Miguel is | :07:19. | :07:22.
one of them. He can hear the gunman talking. He says, "Everybody come | :07:23. | :07:30.
out because everybody's gonna die." So people listened to him and they | :07:31. | :07:35.
ran out of the bathroom. As they ran out of the bathroom into the | :07:36. | :07:39.
hallway, he just started shooting them and killing them right there. | :07:40. | :07:43.
Patience and Akyra have found Tiara and the three friends are hidden in | :07:44. | :07:48.
a stall in the other toilet. It's packed. The gunman is now moving | :07:49. | :07:57.
towards them. It wasn't even registering until like he came in | :07:58. | :08:05.
and started pop, pop, pop, pop... Looking around like, this is | :08:06. | :08:10.
actually happening, oh, my God. And we had to get on the floor of the | :08:11. | :08:14.
bathroom stall and I'm just like on the floor. I'm like, oh, my God. | :08:15. | :08:20.
This is actually happening. It was like shhh, shhh. Be quiet, be quiet! | :08:21. | :08:28.
I remember hearing him saying, "My gun's jammed." And I'm just like | :08:29. | :08:36.
shocked, like, so my Patience looks at me. I look at Patience, I look at | :08:37. | :08:40.
my cousin. And Patience is like we can jump him and get out of here. By | :08:41. | :08:45.
that time, the person that was holding onto the door got the memo | :08:46. | :08:50.
that was going to be the plan. When he opened the door the shooter shot | :08:51. | :08:55.
into the stall. Me Patience and Akyra were the first to get those | :08:56. | :09:00.
shots. Everybody occur rig around screaming like, "Please stop. | :09:01. | :09:04.
Please!" It wasn't until I looked down at my leg and I saw the blood, | :09:05. | :09:11.
just like coming out of my right thigh. I'm like - I've been shot. | :09:12. | :09:19.
The gunman is heading back to the dance floor, where Angel is lying | :09:20. | :09:23.
injured. He's been shot three times and his leg has been broken in the | :09:24. | :09:27.
stampede of people trying to get out. I have this lady now that has | :09:28. | :09:33.
fallen next to me. She's yelling. She's in pain. I tell her, "Grab my | :09:34. | :09:38.
arm. I got you. We're together in this, all right? She's Brenda McCool | :09:39. | :09:43.
a mother of 11 on a night out with one of her sons. I hear the | :09:44. | :09:49.
gunshots, now they're getting closer. Now he's back in the same | :09:50. | :09:55.
room that I'm in again. I don't see his face, but I notice all the | :09:56. | :10:01.
gunshots are slower, you know, ba, ba, ba. And I notice he's shooting | :10:02. | :10:06.
everyone that's on the floor, just making sure they're dead. I can feel | :10:07. | :10:14.
the heat of the gunshots getting closer, louder, closer and louder. I | :10:15. | :10:17.
look over and I see him shoot the girl next to me. I'm thinking, "I'm | :10:18. | :10:30.
next. I'm dead." I just hear the shots - ba, ba, ba. It was on me. I | :10:31. | :10:37.
feel my body jump. And I just feel the warm of the blood, all the blood | :10:38. | :10:41.
I'm losing. I'm like oh, my God. I can't believe he just shot me three | :10:42. | :10:50.
more times, like, what is going on? Oh, God. Right across from Pulse, | :10:51. | :10:55.
it's full of cops. A police team arrives at the club. It's been just | :10:56. | :10:59.
six minutes since the shooting was reported to them. They broke a | :11:00. | :11:05.
window, entered through the Southend of the building. They immediately | :11:06. | :11:09.
went into gunfire looking for the killer. They're shooting | :11:10. | :11:18.
back-and-forth. Vamanos. The entire OPD shows up, all of Orlando Police | :11:19. | :11:23.
department, just rushing down the road and blocking this entire area. | :11:24. | :11:27.
Shots are still going off. These officers are getting out with guns | :11:28. | :11:31.
and ready to start shooting. Oh, my God. They're all shooting | :11:32. | :11:37.
back-and-forth. The police assault forces the gunman to the back of the | :11:38. | :11:47.
club. Oh, my God. People are getting shot, dude. Let's get out of here, | :11:48. | :11:53.
man. Oh, my God. They see people on the dance floor. They see people | :11:54. | :11:57.
running out of the club, people bleeding, people needing help. They | :11:58. | :12:01.
moved in and they rescued a lot of people. It's probably pretty | :12:02. | :12:07.
horrific for them. I think they kind of put that aside, realised they | :12:08. | :12:11.
needed to move and get people out of the club. Mostly everyone's dead in | :12:12. | :12:19.
that room. I look up and I see an officer coming in. I look at him and | :12:20. | :12:22.
I'm like, "Please help me. Please help me. I'm on the floor. I can't | :12:23. | :12:28.
crawl. There's glass everywhere." He comes running to me and tells me, | :12:29. | :12:36.
"The only way we can get out is if I grab your hands and I drag you." I | :12:37. | :12:40.
was in shorts. I could just feel the glass all over my legs and my | :12:41. | :12:46.
bottom. It's just, I'm just telling him, "Please hurry. Hurry." He was | :12:47. | :12:50.
able to drag me across the street to the restaurant where all the | :12:51. | :12:53.
survivors and the bodies were. He drops me off there. I'm just laying | :12:54. | :13:01.
down and I'm looking at the sky and I'm like, oh, my God, I made it. The | :13:02. | :13:06.
police now have the gunman trapped in the toilets. The shooting stops. | :13:07. | :13:14.
But there are dozens of hostages, including Patience, Tiara and Akyra. | :13:15. | :13:21.
You're looking at somebody's face, their soul is just gone. Mood all | :13:22. | :13:25.
over the bottom -- blood all over the bottom of a toilet, that part of | :13:26. | :13:31.
the toilet was just blood all over it, just a hand, like blood all over | :13:32. | :13:35.
it. You look back, you could barely see, but you could see piles of | :13:36. | :13:39.
people on top of each other just as terrified and bloody as you are and | :13:40. | :13:45.
someone directly behind you scared to death. Then you just have to... | :13:46. | :13:52.
God, God, please. The gunman makes the first of four | :13:53. | :14:06.
calls to the police. You can hear him get on the phone with 911. He | :14:07. | :14:11.
pledge as leaningance to Isis. And we're just like, oh, my God, is this | :14:12. | :14:14.
seriously happening right now? Because this is the stuff that we | :14:15. | :14:19.
only see on TV. He says it's nothing personal towards you guys. He said, | :14:20. | :14:23.
I'm just trying to make my message heard. This is kind of like a | :14:24. | :14:27.
terrorist event, so it kind of raises the stakes a little bit, | :14:28. | :14:31.
because you know his only mission now is to kill as many people as he | :14:32. | :14:42.
can. Commander Heavy. Go ahead. I just saw you walking back behind. I | :14:43. | :14:47.
have a ballistic vest for any of our individuals that are entering the | :14:48. | :14:55.
red zone. After leading the escape, Imran starts helping other | :14:56. | :14:56.
survivors. IMRAN YUSUF: They were being brought | :14:57. | :15:01.
out by other people and so we went over there to help and we were told, | :15:02. | :15:04.
let's bring all the wounded to an area that | :15:05. | :15:08.
cops already set up. The nearest hospital | :15:09. | :15:10.
is only half a mile away. DR JOSEPH IBRAHIM: There | :15:11. | :15:32.
was a lot of blood. And these were massive | :15:33. | :15:35.
injuries, abdominal wounds, chest wounds, that he must | :15:36. | :15:44.
have been very close, with an assault rifle, | :15:45. | :15:49.
that I've not seen that before. ANGEL COLON: I was in the first | :15:50. | :16:00.
round that were able I was yelling at them, | :16:01. | :16:02.
"Turn me around, turn me They told me it was like a puzzle, | :16:03. | :16:08.
like how are we going to put this DR JOSEPH IBRAHIM: We had eight pass | :16:09. | :16:17.
away in the emergency department and one | :16:18. | :16:27.
on the way to the operating room. So, you know, having to stop, | :16:28. | :16:32.
with one patient so that you can move on to the next one, | :16:33. | :16:35.
that you could, potentially, save. That, that was the hardest part, | :16:36. | :16:38.
it's, you know, saying OK, In the toilet stalls, | :16:39. | :16:42.
phones keep ringing. PATIENCE CARTER: It was families | :16:43. | :16:54.
calling and they wanted Phones just kept ringing and text | :16:55. | :16:57.
messages kept going off and he said turn them off, | :16:58. | :17:04.
like, give me your phone, he didn't want anybody | :17:05. | :17:08.
to be on the phone. But some hostages are secretly | :17:09. | :17:11.
talking to the police. MIGUEL LIEVA: We were already | :17:12. | :17:15.
in contact with the negotiator, one of the guys was talking | :17:16. | :17:17.
to the negotiator, he was whispering So as we're, we're getting | :17:18. | :17:20.
the details from the Swat team they're telling us | :17:21. | :17:25.
that they were gonna come This is what's happening | :17:26. | :17:27.
in one of the toilets. MIGUEL LIEVA: There was nothing we | :17:28. | :17:55.
can do. We were just trying to be quiet | :17:56. | :17:58.
because so he didn't come The gunman's told them there's one | :17:59. | :18:01.
outside and he has a suicide vest. TIARA PARKER: He said I have | :18:02. | :18:15.
enough bombs that can take out a city block, | :18:16. | :18:18.
that's when I knew my life was over. The police Swat team stay | :18:19. | :18:30.
inside despite the bomb threat. CAPTAIN MARK CANTY: It didn't really | :18:31. | :18:36.
change their mission, they knew they had to get people | :18:37. | :18:39.
inside, they weren't really thinking of themselves because I think common | :18:40. | :18:42.
sense probably tells you - hey, if somebody has a bomb, | :18:43. | :18:46.
you need to back away. could have the Swat team to move, | :18:47. | :18:49.
I don't think they would have listened to me cos they knew | :18:50. | :18:59.
they had to stay where they were because there were people | :19:00. | :19:01.
inside that they could With the killer close by, | :19:02. | :19:04.
the police take a chance. They remove an air conditioning | :19:05. | :19:09.
unit, helping more CAPTAIN MARK CANTY: They push that | :19:10. | :19:11.
air-conditioning unit out a hole in the wall and pulled | :19:12. | :19:19.
people out of that hole. Obviously if you just push it, | :19:20. | :19:23.
it will fall and the killer will possibly know that | :19:24. | :19:26.
there's more people, A lot of coordination | :19:27. | :19:29.
went through that. The officers put themselves | :19:30. | :19:34.
in great peril. The people inside, I'm sure, | :19:35. | :19:37.
were terrified and to kind of maintain control and keep quiet | :19:38. | :19:40.
and listen to officers and do By now the police have full | :19:41. | :19:44.
control of the club ? The killer is outside the stall | :19:45. | :19:50.
where the three friends TIARA PARKER: I remember him bending | :19:51. | :19:57.
down and looking under like this and when I seen him do that I just | :19:58. | :20:06.
had to leave my eyes open because I was scared if I blinked | :20:07. | :20:09.
he was going to shoot me in my face. So I just stayed like this and I'm | :20:10. | :20:14.
guessing he must have thought PATIENCE CARTER: We were helpless, | :20:15. | :20:17.
we were completely helpless and that was the scariest thing | :20:18. | :20:21.
to see his feet just keep moving, He even said, "I got plenty | :20:22. | :20:24.
of bullets," at one point, clicking and reloading his gun, | :20:25. | :20:33.
tormenting us for hours CAPTAIN MARK CANTY: I was called | :20:34. | :20:36.
back to the command post to brief I told them that our best option | :20:37. | :20:44.
was to do an explosive breach on one The Chief said, "Let me | :20:45. | :20:52.
know when you're ready." PATIENCE CARTER: So time has passed, | :20:53. | :21:09.
time has passed and then all of a sudden out | :21:10. | :21:17.
of nowhere we hear this, like, explosion it sounded like, | :21:18. | :21:24.
and everyone just jumps, everybody in the bathroom stall | :21:25. | :21:26.
just, their whole, entire, everybody's entire body shakes | :21:27. | :21:29.
and I even think he shook CAPTAIN MARK CANTY: | :21:30. | :21:31.
They set the charge, the whole wall in as we expected | :21:32. | :21:35.
but it did kind of go through. PATIENCE CARTER: This speaker | :21:36. | :21:42.
goes off that says: "Get so we know that it's the police, | :21:43. | :21:44.
it's the police right there, TIARA PARKER: I thought the shooter | :21:45. | :21:49.
was blowing down the building PATIENCE CARTER: He comes | :21:50. | :21:53.
in our stall, says, "Hey you" CAPTAIN MARK CANTY: We used | :21:54. | :22:00.
our Bear Cat armoured vehicle which has a ram | :22:01. | :22:13.
on the front, to push They were able to make that hole | :22:14. | :22:16.
large enough to get people out and then they were able to get | :22:17. | :22:20.
several hostages out of that hole. MIGUEL LIEVA: I was the third person | :22:21. | :22:23.
out. When I got out I fell belly first | :22:24. | :22:25.
and I noticed that one of the guys we were trying to keep | :22:26. | :22:29.
alive the whole time they just left him there, | :22:30. | :22:31.
I guess they thought he was dead. So I'm like, "He's still alive, he's | :22:32. | :22:34.
still alive, and there's people." The last three people came out | :22:35. | :22:37.
behind me and the Swat team member So I grab his arm and his leg and I | :22:38. | :22:40.
was run...running, the gunman comes out through, | :22:41. | :22:45.
through the hole that they just CAPTAIN MARK CANTY: He's in that | :22:46. | :22:48.
hole, he's got guns in his hands and obviously points them | :22:49. | :22:52.
at our officers. PATIENCE CARTER: And then they say, | :22:53. | :22:53.
"Put your weapon down, put your weapon down," | :22:54. | :22:56.
and he's not doing it TIARA PARKER: The shell casings | :22:57. | :22:58.
are like ricocheting off of things so, like, I'm getting burned, | :22:59. | :23:19.
it feels like the branding, like I'm getting branded, | :23:20. | :23:22.
like I just feel it. And I remember, after | :23:23. | :23:28.
that, I seen him die. They didn't even have | :23:29. | :23:32.
to confirm that. PATIENCE CARTER: Under the debris | :23:33. | :23:34.
of the wall and the, the stall in my face I'm just like, | :23:35. | :23:41.
is it over, is it over, TIARA PARKER: The sparks | :23:42. | :23:44.
stopped and this was really Patience and Tiara's friend, | :23:45. | :23:53.
Akyra, is barely alive. TIARA PARKER: I pulled | :23:54. | :24:05.
Akyra by her clothes onto my lap and I said, | :24:06. | :24:09.
"Akyra, get up, get up right now, get up, they're here, | :24:10. | :24:12.
they're here, get up." And I was just like, | :24:13. | :24:16.
you know, I grabbed her neck and she was still breathing, | :24:17. | :24:20.
I grabbed her hand and she didn't respond to me but I grabbed her hand | :24:21. | :24:25.
again and she clenched me back CAPTAIN MARK CANTY: He's a killer. | :24:26. | :24:29.
He's an evil killer. I think about the victims | :24:30. | :25:01.
and their families, I think about the city and how | :25:02. | :25:08.
the city is coming together. Those are the things that | :25:09. | :25:11.
I think about, I couldn't care less about him, | :25:12. | :25:13.
I don't care anything about him, I don't want to speak his name, | :25:14. | :25:15.
I don't want to see his picture - Across Orlando, there have been | :25:16. | :25:19.
memorials and vigils. But the city is still | :25:20. | :25:24.
grieving for its dead. MIGUEL LIEVA: And just to watch | :25:25. | :25:33.
so many people die for no reason is, People have described | :25:34. | :25:37.
you as a hero ? do IMRAN YUSUF: Real heroes, | :25:38. | :25:47.
a lot of them paid DR JOSEPH IBRAHIM: Yesterday, | :25:48. | :25:56.
leaving, I drove by, there's a memorial out here | :25:57. | :26:07.
on Lake Beauty, they have a bunch of memorials set up, | :26:08. | :26:10.
and seeing the friends and family coming together and crying over | :26:11. | :26:13.
someone you were potentially working Angel has been reunited with | :26:14. | :26:15.
the police officer who rescued him. I was one of the ones that helped | :26:16. | :26:30.
you get out of harm's way ANGEL COLON: Seeing that girl | :26:31. | :26:34.
get shot next to me. Because, actually, I found | :26:35. | :26:48.
out that the guy to my And he actually had called | :26:49. | :26:51.
me yesterday. "Now I can come to closure", | :26:52. | :26:54.
cos he knew that she died ANGEL COLON: And I was telling her, | :26:55. | :27:02.
it's going to be OK. PATIENCE CARTHER: Tiara | :27:03. | :27:27.
and her mother comes in. Miss Celeste, that's | :27:28. | :27:31.
Tiara's mum's name, she sits on the bed | :27:32. | :27:35.
next to my legs, Tiara's sitting | :27:36. | :27:39.
on the side of my hospital bed, you know, and everybody's calm | :27:40. | :27:43.
and then, Miss Celeste turns to me, TIARA PARKER: June 12th 2016 ? | :27:44. | :28:00.
I will never forget that date. | :28:01. | :28:07. |
