Torrential rain and high winds have swept through Scotland,

Hundreds of people have had to leave their homes,

Eleanor Bradford has our first report tonight from the South West.

This area has never seen anything like it.

This couple were trying to reach their one-year-old child

at a grandparents's house, when they found themselves cut off.

The roads are closed, so we are a bit stranded appear.

The river broke its banks earlier on this morning, and one vehicle

unfortunately got stuck in the middle, and the driver

Further inland, the town of Newton Stewart was cut off,

the power station flooded, there was no electricity or phones.

By lunchtime, in Dumfries, a severe flood warning had been

issued, meaning a danger to life from the rising waters of the river.

The worst of the rain has passed but experts warned that is central and

North East of Scotland water levels may not pick until tomorrow.

In South Ayrshire 12 people, including two children,

were rescued from a bus after it was stranded in flood water

Stranded, a bus trying to keep to its normal roof -- route in Ayrshire

this lunchtime but ended up stuck in the floodwaters with passengers on

board. Police officers could not reach them immediately so a had been

made to rescue them. It was the afternoon by the time the helicopter

started winching the passengers off the bus. The Fire Service said they

decided rescuing them by boat just was not a safe option. Because of

the flow of the water it was my initial concern that if we were

trying to evacuate them on the water it could put them in danger so that

was the rationale behind utilising additional water resources that were

requested for the incident. Neither driver nor passengers including two

children were injured but they had had a very frightening experience.

The water came in the bus and went up and up. It got to the Windows I

was big waves and you could see the current and it was very scary. It

covered the front seats on the whole of the front lower section of the

bus was completely with water. The driver and passengers had a lucky

escape today but the emergency services are warning that this

should act as a reminder of just how dangerous floodwaters could be.

People in parts of Aberdeen are having to leave their homes

This is the closest we can get to the south of Aberdeen to. Conditions

have been evacuated tonight with the residents going to rest centres at

the city. The helicopter is searching after a report of two cars

floating down the river Dee. The coastguard teams are hoping --

By late afternoon it became clear that residents would have to get

out. The emergency services went into to help evacuate. As the

streets became rivers locals were brought out by boat. Only a few

hours earlier residents had been hopeful that their flood defences

would hold. But water is an unpredictable force and how quickly

things change. The flood defences that we had gone. It is incredible

how quickly the water has risen here and flooded this part after the

river burst its banks. This car is half submerged in water and the

streets signs as well. By the middle of the afternoon the river was a

lake. The water levels here are at their highest levels since 19 I have

never seen it as high as this before. Residents whose homes are

affected must wait until the morning to see how much damage has been

will be strong winds and rain and the rain rain will be heavy at
