good morning from Westminster Abbey, where astonishingly, almost

:00:09.:00:15.

every monarchy in our history has been crowned. Nearly 1000 years of

:00:15.:00:23.

our history are presented here. I am represented at the abbey where Queen

:00:23.:00:28.

Elizabeth was crowned 60 years ago, and she is back to celebrate that

:00:28.:00:32.

coronation. Something extraordinary has happened here this morning. Two

:00:32.:00:34.

of the regalia used in the Coronation have been brought to the

:00:34.:00:41.

Abbey under close guard to be placed on the high altar for the duration

:00:41.:00:46.

of the service. Two significant parts of the regalia. On the right,

:00:46.:00:50.

the gold eagle, with wings outstretched, which carried the

:00:50.:00:58.

sacred oil with which the Queen was anointed. And then the great Saint

:00:58.:01:07.

Edward's crown, solid gold encrusted with jewels heavy, weighs five lbs,

:01:07.:01:17.
:01:17.:01:43.

over two kilos, only one briefly by the Queen at the Coronation. This

:01:43.:01:48.

wonderful Abbey, so much beloved, was actually designed to form a

:01:48.:01:56.

theatre for the Coronation of Kings and Queens by Henry III, designed so

:01:56.:02:01.

that as many people as possible could see the Coronation. And the

:02:01.:02:05.

congregation that has been arriving here for the last half-hour or so

:02:05.:02:10.

gathered from all corners of the UK, chosen by the Queen's

:02:10.:02:15.

representatives in the country, the Lord's lieutenant. People from

:02:15.:02:17.

public life who have given public service, members of the Armed Forces

:02:17.:02:25.

and others. And the Royal family will be here. 25 members of the

:02:25.:02:29.

Royal family joining the Queen, the Duke of Edinburgh, was unwell

:02:29.:02:37.

yesterday. It is said he will come here this morning, determined not to

:02:37.:02:43.

miss the service. In 1953, nearly 2 million people came to London to

:02:43.:02:45.

watch the spectacular Coronation procession had to get agents of the

:02:45.:02:51.

new Queen, and millions more saw the service for the first time live on

:02:51.:02:59.

television. For them, it was an excitement they could never forget.

:02:59.:03:04.

What I remember most about the day, finally, was that it was horribly

:03:04.:03:11.

cold. The weather was awful. I believe it was two degrees colder

:03:11.:03:15.

than it became in December that year. But it did not stop people

:03:15.:03:19.

sleeping in the streets, determined not to miss the opportunity of

:03:19.:03:25.

seeing this fairytale procession. Into the forecourt of the palace and

:03:25.:03:30.

through the gates comes the gilded coach. I was a junior footman in

:03:30.:03:35.

those days. After breakfast, I went back to my room and started to

:03:35.:03:43.

powder my hair, which consists of lathering your hair with soap,

:03:43.:03:45.

leaving the soap in your hair and then sprinkling it with flour and

:03:45.:03:55.

shaping it like a wig. Then my role was to walk by the left-hand wheel

:03:55.:04:01.

on the Duke of Edinburgh's side of the carriage. Incredible. As the

:04:01.:04:06.

coach went through the arched to go down the Mall, it was the roar of

:04:06.:04:14.

the people. It was something I shall never forget. I was having my second

:04:14.:04:22.

baby, which was very inconvenient at that moment. So I wore my wedding

:04:22.:04:27.

dress, which had been severely let out for various bits of my anatomy,

:04:27.:04:34.

and I remember we had to be there terribly early. The Abbey, of

:04:34.:04:40.

course, was looking marvellous, shining and glittering and full of

:04:40.:04:48.

people. The peers were all wearing their robes. There was quite a smell

:04:48.:04:51.

of mothballs about, because they had all been put away for the whole of

:04:51.:05:01.
:05:01.:05:04.

the war. It was very noisy. Everyone was talking. Once the doors opened,

:05:04.:05:10.

a hush came over for a booking. Everybody was expectant, and it all

:05:10.:05:15.

went very quiet. Everyone was turning, waiting for her to come

:05:15.:05:23.

down. It was a magical moment. stood and we picked the trainer, and

:05:23.:05:27.

it had little satin handles underneath. The train rippled over

:05:28.:05:31.

our hands, and we all stood there and she turned round and said ready,

:05:31.:05:41.
:05:41.:05:41.

girls? We said yes, and off we went. They were the first pictures. A few

:05:42.:05:46.

steps in, the atmosphere had changed from our point of view. As soon as

:05:46.:05:51.

the doors opened, we were working. It was fun, fast, and I was so much

:05:51.:06:01.
:06:01.:06:03.

to do. It was an exciting atmosphere. To see the Queen looking

:06:03.:06:08.

so fragile, young and defenceless, somehow, with all the regalia going

:06:08.:06:13.

on around her and that little lonely figure standing there, was somehow

:06:13.:06:19.

terribly moving. It was somebody you knew, but in a new light, which

:06:19.:06:29.
:06:29.:06:38.

changes everything. God save the Queen! It was the most amazing day

:06:38.:06:44.

of my life. People often say, your wedding must have been wonderful.

:06:44.:06:50.

And I say, well, it was. But to be chosen to be made of honour at the

:06:50.:07:00.
:07:00.:07:04.

Queen's Coronation was the most wonderful day of my life.

:07:04.:07:09.

members of the Royal Family are being greeted at the door. The Duke

:07:09.:07:19.
:07:19.:07:24.

of York and his daughters, Beatrice and Eugenie, greeted by the clergy.

:07:24.:07:34.
:07:34.:07:36.

And now the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, and Prince Harry. All

:07:36.:07:46.
:07:46.:08:00.

eyes inevitably on the Duchess. The Prince of Wales and the Duchess of

:08:00.:08:07.

Cornwall, Camilla. And they are greeted by the Dean and the sub

:08:07.:08:15.

Dean. They will wait here, at the West End of the Abbey, for the

:08:15.:08:24.

arrival of her Majesty, the Queen. Then the four of them will process

:08:24.:08:34.
:08:34.:08:35.

up the nave with the Archbishop of Canterbury leading. There are the

:08:35.:08:38.

canons of Westminster, the people who run the Cathedral, and then the

:08:38.:08:48.

Royal Family. A single police motorcycle marks the arrival of the

:08:48.:08:52.

Queen's car. Again, very little formality. Nothing like what

:08:52.:08:58.

happened 60 years ago. The Dean moves forward to greet her to her

??LINERBREAK The Prime Minister, David Cameron, will read from the

:20:14.:20:21.

Book of kings, the story of the anointing of Solomon by Kzadok the

:20:21.:20:31.
:20:31.:20:32.

priest. King David said call me David the Priest. And they came

:20:32.:20:37.

before the king. The king also said unto them, take with you the

:20:37.:20:44.

servants of your Lord and call Solomon my son to ride upon mine own

:20:44.:20:52.

mule and bring him down. And let Zadok the priest and Nathan the

:20:52.:20:58.

prophet anoint him there, king over Israel and blow yee with the trumpet

:20:58.:21:04.

and say, God save king Solomon. Then you shall come up after him that he

:21:04.:21:13.

may come and sit upon my throne, for he shall be king in my sted and I

:21:13.:21:20.

have appointed him to be ruler over Israel and Juda. And the son

:21:20.:21:28.

answered the king and said, "Amen, the Lord God of my Lord the king say

:21:28.:21:35.

so too." As the Lord has been with my Lord the king, even so be he with

:21:35.:21:39.

Solomon and make his throne greater than the throne of my Lord, king

:21:40.:21:49.
:21:50.:21:52.

David. So Zadok the priest and Nathan the prophet and the

:21:52.:21:56.

pelophites went down and caused Solomon to ride upon king David's

:21:56.:22:06.

mule and brought him to bear and the priest took an horn of oil out of

:22:06.:22:11.

the tavern and anointed Solomon and they blew the trumpet and all the

:22:11.:22:17.

people said, God save king Solomon. And all the people came up after him

:22:18.:22:24.

and the people piped with pipes and rejoiced with great joy, so that the

thee, that strengthened by seven-fold gifts we will remain

:25:29.:25:35.

faithful to our calling and active in thy service, through Jesus

:25:35.:25:43.

Christ, our Lord, amen. Now, the Secretary General of the

:25:43.:25:47.

Commonwealth, Kamalesh Sharma will read from the gospel according to St

:25:47.:25:57.
:25:57.:25:59.

Mark. James and John were sons of Zebedee and come to him saying,

:25:59.:26:06.

master we shall do whatever we shall desire. He said unto them what shall

:26:06.:26:14.

I do for you? They said unto him, grant us that we may sit one on thy

:26:14.:26:24.

right hand and the other on thy left hand in thy glory. And Jesus said

:26:24.:26:29.

unto them, you know not what you ask. Can you drink of the cup that I

:26:29.:26:36.

drink of? And be baptised with the baptism that I'm baptised with? And

:26:36.:26:43.

they said unto him, we can. And Jesus said unto them, you shall

:26:43.:26:48.

indeed drink from the come that I drink of and with the baptism that I

:26:48.:26:54.

am baptised shall all be baptised, but to sit on my right hand and my

:26:54.:27:01.

left hand is not mine to give. But it shall be give be to -- given to

:27:01.:27:10.

them for whom it is prepared. And when the men heard it and they began

:27:10.:27:15.

to be much displeased with James and John. When Jesus called them to him

:27:15.:27:21.

and said unto them, you know that they which are accounted to rule

:27:21.:27:27.

over the gentiles exercise logic over them. And the great ones exile

:27:27.:27:34.

authority upon them. But so shall it not be among you that who so ever

:27:34.:27:41.

shall be great apong you shall be -- among you shall be all here and who

:27:41.:27:49.

so ever shall be the chiefest shall be servant for even the son of man

:27:49.:27:58.

came not to be ministered unto, but to minister. And to give his life

:27:58.:28:06.

for ransom for many. Now, the only hymn that was sung at the

:28:06.:28:14.

coronation, especially arranged for the Coronation, his version of All

:28:14.:28:24.
:28:24.:28:47.

# All people that on earth do twele -- dwell

:28:47.:28:52.

# Sing to the Lord with cheerful voice

:28:52.:29:02.
:29:02.:29:03.

# Him serve with fear, his phrase forth tell

:29:03.:29:13.
:29:13.:29:25.

# Come ye before him and rejoice # The Lord ye know is God indeed

:29:25.:29:35.
:29:35.:29:45.

# Without our aid he did us make # We are his folk, he doth us feed

:29:45.:29:55.
:29:55.:30:28.

# To Father, Son and Hole Ghost -- Holy Ghost

:30:28.:30:31.

# The God whom heaven and earth adore

:30:31.:30:41.

Archbishop of Canterbury. In the name of the Father, and of the Sun

:31:30.:31:40.
:31:40.:31:55.

Whom soever would-be chief among you must be servant of all. A nation

:31:55.:31:59.

watched. It was the first time the nation had watched anything as it

:31:59.:32:07.

happened. But this, they saw. Pomp and ceremony on a rainy June day,

:32:07.:32:15.

wrapped in time and custom. Very British. At its beginning was a

:32:15.:32:20.

moment of deepest meaning that we have all forgotten. The figure at

:32:20.:32:29.

the centre of events, the new Queen, goes alone not to be

:32:29.:32:38.

coronation, but passed it to kneel at the altar in prayer. Before her,

:32:38.:32:42.

the words "the kingdoms of this world have become the kingdoms of

:32:42.:32:49.

our Lord and Christ". We do not know what was prayed. Her Majesty knelt

:32:49.:32:54.

at the beginning of a path of demanding devotion and utter

:32:54.:32:58.

self-sacrifice, a path she did not choose, yet to which she was called

:32:58.:33:08.

by God. Today, we celebrate 60 years since that moment, 60 years of

:33:08.:33:14.

commitment. There was a trumpet fanfare today as the Queen arrived

:33:14.:33:20.

with her supporters. But let us resist the splendour of the

:33:20.:33:27.

spectacle for a moment and focus on what was meant. Not my will, Lord,

:33:27.:33:34.

but yours be done. And following Her Majesty's giving of allegiance to

:33:34.:33:42.

God, others, especially with such equal and dedicated commitment, the

:33:42.:33:51.

Duke of Edinburgh, pledged their allegiance to her. And here, in the

:33:51.:33:56.

grace and providence of God, is the model of liberty and authority which

:33:56.:34:06.
:34:06.:34:07.

our country enjoys. Liberty is only real when it exists under

:34:07.:34:11.

authority. Liberty under authority begins, as the book of Common prayer

:34:11.:34:20.

puts it, with our duty to God, whose service is perfect freedom. We live

:34:20.:34:25.

in a hierarchy of liberty under authority that ascends to God's

:34:25.:34:35.

limitless love. As we see in the life of Jesus, with God, justice and

:34:35.:34:40.

mercy are perfectly joined, wisdom is unlimited, generosity is

:34:40.:34:43.

unstinting and love pours out to the whole world in an overwhelming

:34:43.:34:52.

embrace that is offered universally and abundantly. A nation that crowns

:34:52.:35:00.

its head of state with such a model of liberty under authority expresses

:35:00.:35:05.

commitment to the same glorious values for itself. In those moments

:35:05.:35:13.

of prayer as symbolised the basis for the greatness of this country.

:35:14.:35:19.

In their silence lies God's call. In their humility lies God's authority.

:35:19.:35:26.

In their resulting service lies God's perfect freedom. What follows

:35:26.:35:32.

is the joy of security that comes from obeying God alone. Such

:35:32.:35:42.
:35:42.:35:42.

consecration to God is followed by a crown. When we obey God's call,

:35:42.:35:45.

whoever we are, leading government or quietly serving our local

:35:45.:35:51.

community, we establish a country that is openhanded and openhearted,

:35:51.:35:58.

serving others with joy. In such service, we become Britain at its

:35:58.:36:07.

best. We know how to celebrate, as again last year in the Olympics. We

:36:07.:36:13.

know how to comfort and grieve, as on the streets of Woolwich and the

:36:13.:36:19.

courage of passers-by and the police. Yet we are not always and

:36:19.:36:27.

everywhere at our best. We celebrate today not liberty by itself, which

:36:27.:36:30.

in human weakness turns to selfishness, but liberty under the

:36:30.:36:38.

authority of God. We are never more free, nor better, than when we are

:36:38.:36:45.

under the authority of God. Her Majesty the Queen is servant of the

:36:45.:36:51.

King of Kings, and so she serves as as we serve her, in liberty and

:36:51.:36:59.

under authority. It is a system that points to freedom in God, in whose

:36:59.:37:09.
:37:09.:37:15.

love alone we are fully human, fully free. The choir will now sing the

:37:15.:37:17.

anthem that was specially commissioned for this service by

:37:17.:37:22.

former choristers who were at the Abbey in the Coronation, written by

:37:22.:37:32.
:37:32.:37:44.

one of our leading composers of call work. The King Shall Rejoice.

:37:44.:37:47.

# The King shall rejoice in thy strength, O Lord: exceeding glad

:37:47.:37:57.
:37:57.:38:03.

shall he be of thy salvation. # Thou hast given him his heart's

:38:03.:38:13.
:38:13.:38:29.

desire: and hast not denied him the request of his lips.
