Hello it's Wednesday, it's 9 o'clock, I'm Joanna Gosling | :00:08. | :00:09.
in for Victoria, welcome to the programme. | :00:10. | :00:11.
An earthquake has struck central Italy leaving | :00:12. | :00:13.
The epicentre was only 65 miles from Rome, with the worst damage | :00:14. | :00:20.
I am a mother no longer. under the house. | :00:21. | :01:11.
excited. That was taken away from me seven weeks ago. I just hope that it | :01:12. | :01:11.
was worth it. At least 20 people have been killed | :01:12. | :01:23.
and others trapped in rubble after an earthquake in the central | :01:24. | :01:25.
Italian region of Umbria. Amatrice, has said that many | :01:26. | :01:28.
buildings have collapsed. He said he believed half | :01:29. | :01:35.
of the town had gone. The quake, which measured magnitude | :01:36. | :01:37.
6.2, hit at about half past three local time this morning and was felt | :01:38. | :01:40.
as far away as Rome and Venice. Reports of lives lost | :01:41. | :01:44.
and buildings reduced to rubble. At 3:30am the earthquake struck, | :01:45. | :01:56.
reaching a magnitude of 6.2. It was felt across large | :01:57. | :02:01.
swathes of the country, The worst hit areas appear to be | :02:02. | :02:04.
small hilltop villages in the area. Helicopters are being sent out | :02:05. | :02:14.
to assess the damage. At the moment I am in a little | :02:15. | :02:21.
village called Camartina. But I know that for sure, | :02:22. | :02:24.
we had two people die in the location called Arquata del | :02:25. | :02:27.
Tronto, that is the municipality. So we have so many houses that | :02:28. | :02:32.
may be destroyed. The Mayor of the small town | :02:33. | :02:38.
of Amatrice told Italian television that buildings had collapsed, | :02:39. | :02:41.
saying half the town was gone. And in close by Accumoli, | :02:42. | :02:48.
it's reported that a family of four This is an area vulnerable | :02:49. | :02:51.
to earthquakes. In 2009, the same region was struck, | :02:52. | :02:59.
more than 300 people died. As the day goes on, and more help | :03:00. | :03:05.
arrives, the true extent Eve Read is on holiday near Perugia, | :03:06. | :03:08.
and was woken by the earthquake. Thank you for joining us. Tell us | :03:09. | :03:29.
what happened. There's ten of us staying in a farmhouse. Three | :03:30. | :03:32.
generations of my family. We were all woken after 3am with relatively | :03:33. | :03:44.
violent shaking off the bed. Was it clear to you what had happened? Not | :03:45. | :03:54.
me, I said to my husband, what is that. He said, don't panic, it is an | :03:55. | :04:01.
earthquake. We waited until it had subsided. How long did it go on and | :04:02. | :04:22.
how violent was the shaking. I think it was six or seven seconds after we | :04:23. | :04:33.
woke up that we heard it. Can you describe what it was like to be in | :04:34. | :04:37.
the house, was damage happening at the same time as the movement was | :04:38. | :04:43.
happening? It was not clear whether damaging things were happening, it | :04:44. | :04:50.
was shaking quite a lot. It is quite a strong old building, 200 years old | :04:51. | :04:56.
farmhouse. Obviously it has been standing for some time, renovated | :04:57. | :05:03.
relatively recently. There has been some damage, one of the ceilings has | :05:04. | :05:12.
come down in the bathroom. Otherwise, some cracks but it | :05:13. | :05:17.
appears to be OK. You mentioned there were ten of you in the house. | :05:18. | :05:22.
While you worried? Yes. Tried not to panic. First thought was the | :05:23. | :05:28.
children, then checking the rest of the family was OK. Congregated in | :05:29. | :05:35.
the hallway of the house. At that point in time I guess we did not | :05:36. | :05:41.
think about after-shocks because it is not something British people are | :05:42. | :05:45.
prepared to think about. That happened, about one hour later. That | :05:46. | :05:55.
shook us to the same extent. How many after-shocks have there been? | :05:56. | :06:02.
Quite a lot, to be honest. Probably six or seven relatively large ones. | :06:03. | :06:13.
Excuse me, a lot of small ones. We only noticed them because glasses | :06:14. | :06:19.
were clanking together or things were moving. Have you been able to | :06:20. | :06:24.
see much outside and whether there's any damage around you in the area? | :06:25. | :06:32.
We are in an extremely rural area, we can only see a couple of | :06:33. | :06:36.
properties close by. We know that the neighbours ROK. We've spoken to | :06:37. | :06:41.
another couple whose house has been damaged more than this one. But it's | :06:42. | :06:45.
very difficult for us to see whether anything else destroyed or damaged. | :06:46. | :06:57.
Presumably this will dominate your thoughts, even though luckily you've | :06:58. | :07:00.
been unscathed and there's very little damage where you are. Are you | :07:01. | :07:05.
trying to keep across everything that is happening in the aftermath? | :07:06. | :07:20.
We are staying ahead of what is happening on social media. We don't | :07:21. | :07:28.
have any access. Trying to relax after what is happening. We are | :07:29. | :07:33.
still a little bit shaken and clearly we've not suffered anything | :07:34. | :07:42.
near the amount of damage. Thank you very much. Let's go to our | :07:43. | :07:50.
correspondent, tell us exactly where you are. Clearly quite a lot of | :07:51. | :08:05.
damage behind you. I've arrived in Amatrice. You can see some of the | :08:06. | :08:13.
damage behind me. I've seen some sniffer dogs in the last few minutes | :08:14. | :08:18.
instructed to go inside the buildings and see if there are any | :08:19. | :08:23.
survivors trapped inside, and if we look this way you can see the extent | :08:24. | :08:27.
of the damage on one of the main roads here. There are relief | :08:28. | :08:36.
workers, ambulance workers, men and women, I've seen policemen as well. | :08:37. | :08:44.
We came up the hill with relief workers. We saw men with spades and | :08:45. | :08:58.
shovels. I should stretch is -- I should stress that the atmosphere is | :08:59. | :09:03.
quite calm. A number of people have been walking quietly down the hill. | :09:04. | :09:09.
One man was carrying a suitcase. A lot of the people looked dazed. | :09:10. | :09:14.
People have been removed from the hospital. Patients have been treated | :09:15. | :09:20.
in the courtyard. The atmosphere is calm. We still don't know how many | :09:21. | :09:26.
people may be trapped underneath the rubble. This obviously struck in the | :09:27. | :09:35.
middle of the night. Potentially half the town has gone. What is your | :09:36. | :09:48.
assessment? It's hard to tell. We've walked through the entryway to the | :09:49. | :09:53.
town. Looking past the camera I can see at damaged building over there. | :09:54. | :09:58.
The main street, about a third of the buildings are damaged beyond | :09:59. | :10:05.
repair. It is difficult to verify but it is easy to say that there is | :10:06. | :10:15.
significant damage her. There are helicopters in the sky so it is | :10:16. | :10:20.
clear that the... The relief work is carrying on as they tried to work | :10:21. | :10:24.
out the scale of the disaster. They are trying to work out who is | :10:25. | :10:29.
missing. Everybody here knows each other. Local people will be | :10:30. | :10:41.
reporting in. Most people here will have been asleep at home so it might | :10:42. | :10:44.
have been easy to account for people. I can see more dogs working | :10:45. | :10:53.
over there. That is one of the most immediate ways to work out if | :10:54. | :10:55.
anybody is trapped underneath the rubble. What size is the tone? Do | :10:56. | :11:05.
you know how many people live there? I don't have an estimate at the | :11:06. | :11:09.
moment. But just looking at the number of buildings, there are | :11:10. | :11:15.
probably several thousand people coming here, living here. Obviously | :11:16. | :11:20.
they will need to do a very big count of exactly who has survived | :11:21. | :11:24.
and who is missing. I should stay that we should stay out of the way | :11:25. | :11:28.
because they are escorting some one which we will not sure you for the | :11:29. | :11:35.
moment. We're not getting in the way of emergency workers, there are a | :11:36. | :11:39.
lot of media around here and we step out of the way any time an emergency | :11:40. | :11:44.
worker needs to get by. Thank you very much. The population of | :11:45. | :11:56.
Amatrice is around 2700. James will keep us up to date on it. We saw the | :11:57. | :12:04.
helicopter is trying to assess the scale of the damage in the | :12:05. | :12:08.
surrounding area. Let's go to the deputy editor of The Times | :12:09. | :12:14.
newspaper. She is on holiday and staying about 50 miles from the | :12:15. | :12:17.
epicentre. Thanks for joining us. Tell us what happened where you are. | :12:18. | :12:23.
Like the previous lady you interviewed, we were fast asleep, | :12:24. | :12:29.
dead bait. -- dead of night. When the earthquake struck, it really | :12:30. | :12:34.
could not have been anything else. It was utterly terrifying. The house | :12:35. | :12:38.
started to shake, it gradually got more intense, the noise was | :12:39. | :12:44.
appalling, this rumbling thunderous clinking as if there was a train | :12:45. | :12:52.
approaching us. I sat up and yelled at by husband, it's a earthquake. We | :12:53. | :12:58.
got out of bed by which time on of the people we were staying with was | :12:59. | :13:03.
yelling upstairs because we had 17 teenagers asleep on the top four. | :13:04. | :13:07.
They came eventually. All of them were very dazed. The electricity had | :13:08. | :13:14.
gone. Somebody grabbed the phone. We got and into the garden. We chatted | :13:15. | :13:22.
and assessed what happened. We were baffled. We had no clue what to do | :13:23. | :13:27.
so we went back to bed. Within ten minutes the after-shock hit which | :13:28. | :13:30.
was more terrifying because by then we were conscious of what was going | :13:31. | :13:36.
on. At that point we abandoned the house altogether, grabbed sheets and | :13:37. | :13:42.
blankets, it was very cold. It was the middle of the night. There were | :13:43. | :13:48.
a lot of tremors carrying on. As the sun came up, we saw how badly the | :13:49. | :13:56.
house was damaged. Cracks down on the walls. One of the chimney is | :13:57. | :14:02.
looking very wobbly. All the plaster on the top floor has come off the | :14:03. | :14:12.
walls. With every half hour that goes by it looks worse. I cannot | :14:13. | :14:18.
imagine what it is like in the towns you've been reporting on. We can see | :14:19. | :14:24.
the damage behind you and obviously you left the building because you | :14:25. | :14:29.
were concerned people could get harmed. Is the scale of it enough | :14:30. | :14:36.
that if you'd stayed in the host people could have been harmed? There | :14:37. | :14:44.
were some very large chunks of plaster dropped onto the bed of the | :14:45. | :14:48.
kids and because it was pushed against the wall, it landed on top | :14:49. | :14:55.
of them. One of them clearly put his arms out because he had scratches | :14:56. | :14:59.
down the back. They might have got bashed on the head but nothing | :15:00. | :15:06.
actually collapsed. The really scary thing was none of us had a clue what | :15:07. | :15:17.
to do. There was a lot of flapping around and what we did was get out | :15:18. | :15:24.
of the house. In many ways I'm more afraid and than I was when it | :15:25. | :15:29.
happened because it was an intense experience and not something people | :15:30. | :15:39.
would want to go through. If it is as bad as it was where we are, I | :15:40. | :15:43.
cannot imagine what it is like. It looks like a pretty solid building | :15:44. | :15:47.
from what we can see behind you but does it feel safe to still be there? | :15:48. | :15:52.
It's funny you ask. We've gone back into clear up. It does feel solid. | :15:53. | :15:55.
It is a solid looking farmhouse. Everything is working apart from the | :15:56. | :16:13.
electricity. I got quite a few tweets after I said we had got back | :16:14. | :16:17.
into the house, saying, don't go back into the house. | :16:18. | :16:21.
We have a builder coming this morning to have a look. And my | :16:22. | :16:29.
friend has gone into the village to find out the extent of the damage to | :16:30. | :16:36.
her house. I think people here are used to earthquakes, although it has | :16:37. | :16:41.
not happened here since our friends have been in the area, which is a | :16:42. | :16:45.
good ten years. Thank you for joining us. We will of course keep | :16:46. | :16:51.
you up-to-date with the situation in central Italy throughout the day. | :16:52. | :16:55.
Annita is in the BBC Newsroom with a summary of the rest | :16:56. | :16:58.
A 21-year-old British woman has been stabbed to death at a backpackers' | :16:59. | :17:03.
A 30-year-old man, also from the UK, is in a critical condition. | :17:04. | :17:12.
used the Arabic phrase "Allahu akbar" during the attack. | :17:13. | :17:25.
We have had three people stabbed, one deceased and two injured. It is | :17:26. | :17:34.
shocking and the motivations for it are unclear. As I have said, there | :17:35. | :17:38.
are a number of different circumstances that could be at play | :17:39. | :17:42.
here. Our investigation is trying to determine what they are. | :17:43. | :17:45.
The man challenging to become the leader of the Labour Party says | :17:46. | :17:48.
if he wins the contest he will try to stop Theresa May | :17:49. | :17:51.
Owen Smith said the party would oppose triggering Article 50 | :17:52. | :17:54.

A worldwide ban on plastic micro-beads in cosmetics should be | :18:26. | :18:35.
imposed as soon as possible, according to a group of MPs. | :18:36. | :18:38.
The Environmental Audit Committee says the tiny balls | :18:39. | :18:40.
of plastic used in shower gels and face scrubs can be | :18:41. | :18:43.
found in Arctic sea ice and on the deep ocean. | :18:44. | :18:46.
The MPs say synthetic fibres from warm car tyres and even fleece | :18:47. | :18:49.
We want the Government to institute a national ban to deal with the | :18:50. | :19:05.
national problem we have in the UK. We would also like to see the | :19:06. | :19:07.
government working with other European countries and the cosmetics | :19:08. | :19:12.
industry to get that ban rolled out across the European Union, because | :19:13. | :19:18.
it is a transnational problem and these particles move about in the | :19:19. | :19:25.
seas and end up on our shores. We will talk to a reporter and a | :19:26. | :19:28.
microbiologist about this in an hour's time. | :19:29. | :19:30.

Thank you very much! Use of MDMA, the key | :21:25. | :21:27.
component of ecstasy had been It's use has dipped over the last | :21:28. | :21:29.
year but now the concern is, increasingly strong forms | :21:30. | :21:33.
of the drug are on the market and they're widely | :21:34. | :21:36.
available on the dark web. James Longman has spent some time | :21:37. | :21:37.
with 18-year-old Leslie, In his film, he also met the mother | :21:38. | :21:39.
of 22 year old Stephanie Shevlin, who died in June, after | :21:40. | :21:47.
taking an ecstasy pill. At just about any festival | :21:48. | :21:53.
in any part of the country, But the people doing it | :21:54. | :21:56.
are getting younger. It's the drug of choice | :21:57. | :22:10.
for 18-year-olds at festivals The purity of the drug has also | :22:11. | :22:12.
increased, exposing young lives to even larger doses, | :22:13. | :22:19.
and it is now around online, making it easier | :22:20. | :22:21.
than ever before to buy I've come to Nass Festival | :22:22. | :22:24.
in Somerset. It's an event that | :22:25. | :22:39.
celebrates music, The crowd here is young, | :22:40. | :22:40.
15,000 people will And although the event has a zero | :22:41. | :22:43.
tolerance on drugs, you can tell We've joined up with Leslie, | :22:44. | :22:49.
not his real name, and his mates. He's 18, and he's pretty open | :22:50. | :22:54.
about his drug-taking. Last year, we had something | :22:55. | :22:59.
that wasn't that strong, So you know what you're | :23:00. | :23:02.
taking is stronger now? I do a lot of research | :23:03. | :23:06.
before I buy it. MDMA is the main chemical element | :23:07. | :23:10.
in what's commonly called ecstasy. The higher the amount of MDMA, | :23:11. | :23:14.
the stronger the pill. He tells me that the MDMA he's | :23:15. | :23:19.
taking this year is very strong. The night before, he said | :23:20. | :23:23.
it was the first time he had ever Just when I was walking to one | :23:24. | :23:26.
of the sets, it suddenly hit me. I'd be happy, just really | :23:27. | :23:32.
excited, raring to go. I don't know, you just feel | :23:33. | :23:44.
like you can do a lot more. For this weekend, | :23:45. | :23:51.
Leslie bought 24 pills. They cost him ?85, and he bought | :23:52. | :23:56.
them off the internet, He says they are some | :23:57. | :23:58.
of the strongest available, one Because he's buying online, | :23:59. | :24:05.
Leslie thinks he knows So the quick answer | :24:06. | :24:14.
to that is, you don't When you buy this on the internet, | :24:15. | :24:20.
you're taking the word And you think that the level | :24:21. | :24:29.
of purity in these drugs has been going up and up, | :24:30. | :24:33.
because you can buy them directly from the internet, | :24:34. | :24:36.
you don't have to go You literally just log on, | :24:37. | :24:38.
click "Buy", and they are Do you think that's how | :24:39. | :24:42.
most people here will be Stupid people will get dirty stuff | :24:43. | :24:45.
from the streets before they come. So you think because you buy | :24:46. | :24:50.
it on the internet, They are a lot cleaner, | :24:51. | :24:53.
from experience of what I've taken. Buying online has not only made | :24:54. | :24:58.
getting drugs easier, it's also meant that pills | :24:59. | :25:01.
with higher concentrations of MDMA have become more widely available | :25:02. | :25:04.
to people like Leslie. Without the dealer, those making | :25:05. | :25:08.
the drug can sell directly Organiser Ryan Matthews is clear | :25:09. | :25:11.
his festival is against drugs, but it's difficult to see how | :25:12. | :25:19.
an event like this and you can see his eyes | :25:20. | :25:22.
wide with the drug. It's not as bad today | :25:23. | :25:50.
as it was yesterday. Walking down from the campsite, | :25:51. | :26:01.
I talked to his friend. because you don't know | :26:02. | :26:04.
what you're taking. You're taking something that's been | :26:05. | :26:13.
made, probably in a garage, in Luton on a trading | :26:14. | :26:16.
estate, by some guy who's And the night really begins | :26:17. | :26:19.
for Leslie and his friends. A lot of people here seem | :26:20. | :26:25.
like they're on something. Drugs have long been | :26:26. | :26:51.
a part of growing up. But the drugs are getting stronger, | :26:52. | :26:55.
and the users younger. So it's just coming up | :26:56. | :27:00.
to 12 o'clock. They've got another couple | :27:01. | :27:03.
of hours left of partying, But what he did do is, he gave me | :27:04. | :27:06.
a pill, and we are going to go and get it tested to check just | :27:07. | :27:17.
what's inside these things. And then hopefully, | :27:18. | :27:20.
we are going to meet up with him and tell him just | :27:21. | :27:22.
what he was taking. walks with the dogs, arguments. | :27:23. | :27:43.
Make-ups. Just playing with the kids, | :27:44. | :27:50.
being with the family. Michelle Shevlin knows | :27:51. | :27:52.
about the dangers of MDMA. In June this year, her 22-year-old | :27:53. | :28:01.
daughter Stephanie died after taking When I found out that MDMA was one | :28:02. | :28:03.
of the causes of her death, that contributed to her | :28:04. | :28:13.
death, I was angry. It's hard to understand how | :28:14. | :28:17.
somebody can be here one minute, I do cry, I cry to sleep, | :28:18. | :28:29.
I cry when I wake up, It doesn't get any easier, | :28:30. | :28:36.
and the days at the moment seem I just have to try and get | :28:37. | :28:41.
through it as best as I know how. She's a mother in mourning, | :28:42. | :28:48.
but also angry at the people who sold her daughter | :28:49. | :28:52.
the pill that killed her. I just hope that person's losing | :28:53. | :28:55.
sleep every night they're alive. That was taken away | :28:56. | :28:59.
from me seven weeks ago. I just hope that what they sold my | :29:00. | :29:08.
daughter, I just hope it doesn't happen | :29:09. | :29:10.
to another person, I just don't know how they can | :29:11. | :29:15.
sleep at night. Two weeks have passed since | :29:16. | :29:33.
the festival, I've come to Tictac drug | :29:34. | :29:35.
identification in London to meet Can you tell me | :29:36. | :29:40.
what you found in it? If you go back, traditionally | :29:41. | :29:49.
an average dose in an ecstasy tablet would have been somewhere | :29:50. | :29:57.
between 85-115 mg. So the one you brought | :29:58. | :30:00.
in is considerably higher than that. And for someone to be taking maybe | :30:01. | :30:04.
two or three of these in one evening, that's close | :30:05. | :30:08.
to a gram of MDMA. It's a lot of MDMA the person | :30:09. | :30:10.
would have in their system. So Leslie's pill was as strong | :30:11. | :30:14.
as he thought it was. Trevor says it's incredibly | :30:15. | :30:18.
rare for a user to know So we know that Stephanie Shevlin, | :30:19. | :30:20.
who died just a few weeks ago from an MDMA overdose, | :30:21. | :30:28.
was taking this drug, But we also know that Leslie | :30:29. | :30:31.
was taking a very powerful dose of MDMA, and he hasn't had any | :30:32. | :30:38.
negative side effects. I think that illustrates very well | :30:39. | :30:42.
the lottery of taking There are a lot of reasons, | :30:43. | :30:46.
or a lot of ways in which drugs affect people, | :30:47. | :30:54.
and they affect people differently. Trevor says MDMA has had a definite | :30:55. | :30:56.
resurgence this year, with a greater variety of shapes | :30:57. | :31:01.
and colours, a sign perhaps I met back up with Leslie | :31:02. | :31:03.
to tell him what we found. Do you remember what happened | :31:04. | :31:12.
the rest of your night? I'd love to tell you, | :31:13. | :31:14.
but I can't remember. I can't remember, | :31:15. | :31:17.
to be honest. Because with MDMA, your isotones | :31:18. | :31:21.
drop when you take it, so you have to take more to feel | :31:22. | :31:36.
the same effects as the first time. So, I have the certificate here, | :31:37. | :31:39.
and the only active So, it had pretty much | :31:40. | :31:44.
exactly what you thought Because it was risky buying | :31:45. | :31:53.
it off the dark net, and it coming to you, you really | :31:54. | :32:05.
don't know if what they said, what they said might not be what's | :32:06. | :32:08.
actually in it. This time, the pills Leslie bought | :32:09. | :32:10.
were what he thought they were. But, what you actually get | :32:11. | :32:15.
is still a lottery. So, I think probably what he wanted | :32:16. | :32:17.
to make clear is that this is an extraordinary | :32:18. | :32:21.
amount of drugs I took about, probably, | :32:22. | :32:23.
nine or ten of them. When you put it like that, | :32:24. | :32:30.
that's a lot, isn't it? But I only took about | :32:31. | :32:41.
three, four night. We've also filmed a woman, | :32:42. | :32:45.
Michelle, whose daughter died just a few | :32:46. | :32:48.
weeks ago, actually. And, she died after taking half | :32:49. | :32:49.
a pill, and then another half pill Considering how much I took, | :32:50. | :33:02.
and how much she took, it's quite a big difference, | :33:03. | :33:13.
and she died from it, unfortunately. Lucky, but I get the sense this | :33:14. | :33:16.
won't be the last time The MDMA available to him | :33:17. | :33:22.
and others his age is far stronger than it's ever been, | :33:23. | :33:31.
and much more readily available. But while the dangers are obvious, | :33:32. | :33:33.
the party continues. And we'll be speaking with some | :33:34. | :33:46.
experts around some of the issues covered in James Longman's films | :33:47. | :33:51.
a little later in the programme.If you've been affected by any | :33:52. | :33:53.
of the issues raised in our film and are looking for further help, | :33:54. | :33:58.
support or information on mental health then please call the BBC | :33:59. | :34:01.

in facial scrubs and shower gels - Here's Annita in the BBC Newsroom | :35:16. | :35:18.
with a summary of todays news. At least 20 people have been killed | :35:19. | :35:30.
and others trapped in rubble after an earthquake in the central | :35:31. | :35:33.
Italian region of Umbria. The mayor of one town in the area, | :35:34. | :35:40.
Amatrice, has said that many He said he believed half | :35:41. | :35:43.
of the town had gone. The quake, which measured magnitude | :35:44. | :35:46.
6.2, hit at about half past three local time this morning and was felt | :35:47. | :35:49.
as far away as Rome and Venice We were all fast asleep, | :35:50. | :35:58.
absolute dead of night. When the earthquake struck, | :35:59. | :36:00.
although I've never experienced an earthquake before, | :36:01. | :36:02.
it couldn't have been anything else. A 21-year-old British woman has been | :36:03. | :36:04.
stabbed to death at a backpackers' She was from Wirksworth in | :36:05. | :36:24.

It's a shocking attack by any standards. | :36:36. | :36:41.
There are a number of different circumstances that could | :36:42. | :36:48.
be at play here, and our investigation is trying to determine | :36:49. | :36:51.

The Environmental Audit Committee says the tiny balls | :37:49. | :37:50.

Sometimes it is obvious with whether they are in the products. Sometimes | :38:23. | :38:27.
it is not. We will keep you up-to-date. Let's catch up on the | :38:28. | :38:28.
sport. Celtic are through to the Group | :38:29. | :38:37.
Stages of the Champions League for the first time in three years - | :38:38. | :38:39.
but they had a real scare against Israeli | :38:40. | :38:42.
champions Hapoel Beer Sheva. Celtic took a 5-2 lead to Israel, | :38:43. | :38:44.
but a poor defensive display saw But they scraped through | :38:45. | :38:47.
on aggregate and will earn at least Manchester City look | :38:48. | :38:51.
certain to follow Celtic They have a 5-0 advantage over | :38:52. | :38:54.
Steaua Bucharest heading into their second leg | :38:55. | :38:57.
at the Etihad Stadium tonight. Watford and West Brom | :38:58. | :39:00.
were knocked out by lower league opposition | :39:01. | :39:01.
in the second round of | :39:02. | :39:02.
the EFL cup last night. There were no such problems | :39:03. | :39:05.
for Liverpool, though. Daniel Sturridge scored the best | :39:06. | :39:07.
of their goals in the 5-0 win over Championship | :39:08. | :39:09.
side Burton Albion. Olympic bronze medallist | :39:10. | :39:11.
Chris Froome remains in third place after stage four | :39:12. | :39:13.
of the Tour of Spain. Frenchman Lilian Calmejane | :39:14. | :39:15.
took the stage victory with Froome finishing in the pack | :39:16. | :39:16.
alongside his main rivals. After a brilliant test | :39:17. | :39:20.
series which finished 2-2, England and Pakistan go head to head | :39:21. | :39:22.
in the first of five one day Ben Stokes returns after injury, | :39:23. | :39:25.
while England could play A police officer who served for 20 | :39:26. | :39:28.
years has successfully sued Scotland Yard after it | :39:29. | :39:34.
unlawfully obtained details of where she and her daughter | :39:35. | :39:36.
had been on holiday. Andrea Brown won her case | :39:37. | :39:38.
last month. We'll be | :39:39. | :39:40.
speaking to her in a moment. First, we can get the | :39:41. | :39:42.
details from our legal Andrea served for 20 years. In 2011 | :39:43. | :39:55.
she was off sick, she had depression. She decided to take her | :39:56. | :40:02.
mother and daughter on a trip to see the family in Barbados. She informed | :40:03. | :40:10.
her representative but did not inform her line manager. At this | :40:11. | :40:21.
point, senior officers working at Sutton police station decided to use | :40:22. | :40:28.
powers that the state gave to police to obtain personal data on Andrea. | :40:29. | :40:41.
They managed to get details on her travel going back five years. She | :40:42. | :40:50.
approved an application to Virgin Atlantic and in doing that cited an | :40:51. | :40:52.
act of Parliament that does not actually exist. Managed to obtain | :40:53. | :41:01.
details about them and took action to sue the police. Provided some of | :41:02. | :41:10.
the information. Shortly before the trial they admitted the breach in | :41:11. | :41:13.
data protection and of her human rights, to a private life. The | :41:14. | :41:26.
misuse of private information, we are more used to hearing that about | :41:27. | :41:30.
celebrities but she fought and won that in both cases. The judge said | :41:31. | :41:41.
she appeared glib and flippant and was astonished at how loose and | :41:42. | :41:48.
casual grasp of the law. She lost claims for misfeasance in public | :41:49. | :42:01.
office. She won that victory. The Met police have said they are not | :42:02. | :42:06.
commenting on the case until damages are awarded. How did you find out | :42:07. | :42:15.
that your case was being dealt with in this way? That five years of | :42:16. | :42:23.
records were being trawled. I took them to an employment Tribunal for | :42:24. | :42:27.
victimisation, disability discrimination and other matters. | :42:28. | :42:34.
Part of the procedures means you need to disclose documents. I | :42:35. | :42:41.
discovered the application form sent in. It was the National border | :42:42. | :42:56.
targeting Centre. They gave her five years of information about my travel | :42:57. | :42:59.
arrangements in and out of the country. One of the things was an | :43:00. | :43:05.
act of Parliament which does not even exist being cited. How did you | :43:06. | :43:12.
feel when you discovered that has been done? I saw, I had never heard | :43:13. | :43:25.
of that, I tried to look it up and it did not exist and that's why I'd | :43:26. | :43:31.
never heard of it. Were you angry? I was very angry. How did it make you | :43:32. | :43:37.
feel about the way you'd been treated? I just thought, if another | :43:38. | :43:44.
police officer had successfully obtained information we would have | :43:45. | :43:49.
been sacked and dismissed for misconduct. Yet we've got an | :43:50. | :43:55.
inspector that done this, I'd not done anything wrong, did not realise | :43:56. | :44:02.
I needed to inform my line managers I've gone away, they thought that | :44:03. | :44:08.
justified them to take the action needed and it was totally | :44:09. | :44:12.
disproportionate, it was not necessary, and it was illegal. Has | :44:13. | :44:21.
been an explanation as to how an act that does not exist was quoted? I'm | :44:22. | :44:29.
not sure. For what relatively speaking was a minor matter, they | :44:30. | :44:36.
had the power to use investigatory Powers. If you had a disciplinary | :44:37. | :44:42.
matter at the BBC, you would not expect them to be able to | :44:43. | :44:47.
investigate you as a criminal and go back and find your travel | :44:48. | :44:51.
arrangements, who your travel companions were. That's what's | :44:52. | :44:57.
perfect in this case, -- that what happened in this case. The judge | :44:58. | :45:04.
commented that there was a very loose grasp of the law. Is this | :45:05. | :45:17.
likely to be a one-off? They campaign on the data protection and | :45:18. | :45:22.
issued a report, they discovered over a 4.5 year period there was | :45:23. | :45:37.
something like 2050 breaches of data protection and in 80% it was for no | :45:38. | :45:42.
purpose whatsoever. It is clearly not an isolated incident and it | :45:43. | :45:46.
seems to illustrate a lack of awareness of data protection law | :45:47. | :45:48.
within sections of the police. Andrea, what do you want to happen | :45:49. | :45:59.
now? I am still waiting for a judgment from the court case. What | :46:00. | :46:03.
sort of damages would you anticipate? They have got to pay | :46:04. | :46:08.
back my legal fees because I won most of the case. I am just waiting | :46:09. | :46:13.
to see how much compensation I get. But I sold my house to finance this | :46:14. | :46:20.
and I own family members and friends money, so I would like to be able to | :46:21. | :46:25.
pay them back. And the fact that it happened at all, how does that leave | :46:26. | :46:35.
you feeling? Obviously, the issue is known about. I feel very | :46:36. | :46:39.
disappointed in the way the whole matter has been investigated. When I | :46:40. | :46:45.
reported what the eye Sarah Rees had done, no one appeared to be | :46:46. | :46:49.
interested and they were just like, well, we are entitled to do that and | :46:50. | :46:53.
we were justified in doing that. But I knew they were not. You so you had | :46:54. | :47:01.
a battle. A big battle. Thank you for coming in. | :47:02. | :47:03.
Let's show you some pictures from Italy now following this | :47:04. | :47:06.
morning's strong and deadly quake. | :47:07. | :47:07.
at least 20 people are reported to have been killed. | :47:08. | :47:10.
Several towns and villages have been destroyed. | :47:11. | :47:16.
Up to 60 after-shocks were reported after the first quake. | :47:17. | :47:29.
Its epicentre was close to the town of Norcia, near Perugia. | :47:30. | :47:32.
Buildings have collapsed and many people are missing. | :47:33. | :47:33.
The area is popular with tourists and many are there, as it is | :47:34. | :47:37.
Emergency services are trying to use earth-moving equipment and sniffer | :47:38. | :47:46.
The mayor of Accumoli has said "Now daylight has come, | :47:47. | :47:50.
we can see the situation is more dreadful than we feared". | :47:51. | :47:52.
"Buildings have collapsed, people are trapped under | :47:53. | :47:54.
The mayor of the town of Amatrice has said "Three quarters of the town | :47:55. | :47:59.
"There are voices under the rubble, we have to save the people | :48:00. | :48:03.
The town of Amatrice has a population of 2700. You can see the | :48:04. | :48:26.
rescue workers trying to listen out for noises under the rubble. | :48:27. | :48:31.
Speaking this morning in the Vatican, the Pope has said | :48:32. | :48:34.
that "Hearing the mayor of Amatrice say that the town no longer exists | :48:35. | :48:37.
and hearing that there are children among the victims, | :48:38. | :48:39.
We have just made it to the town of Amatrice, and this looks like one of | :48:40. | :48:55.
the worst affected areas. This is one of the town's main streets, and | :48:56. | :49:00.
as I look down on it, I can see damaged buildings on either side of | :49:01. | :49:08.
the road. We made our way in with relief and rescue workers, and you | :49:09. | :49:12.
can see that they are going about their work, trying to find whether | :49:13. | :49:19.
anybody is still trapped under the rubble. There are also Sniffer dogs | :49:20. | :49:23.
here. Every few minutes, you see somebody going by with a sniffer dog | :49:24. | :49:27.
to see whether there are any survivors. The earthquake hit this | :49:28. | :49:33.
town are 3.30 in the morning, meaning that most people here will | :49:34. | :49:34.
have been asleep in their homes. Helicopters are flying around the | :49:35. | :49:45.
area as they tried to assess the scale of the impact of that | :49:46. | :49:54.
earthquake. As daylight broke, it has become clear that the scale of | :49:55. | :49:57.
the disaster is worse than they had feared. On the left-hand side of the | :49:58. | :50:06.
screen, 2700 people lived in Amatrice, and helicopters are trying | :50:07. | :50:09.
to assess how many other towns may be similarly affected. We will keep | :50:10. | :50:11.
you updated. There are growing calls for plastic | :50:12. | :50:19.
"microbeads" found in many cosmetics and toiletries to be banned | :50:20. | :50:21.
because they're polluting our seas The tiny plastic balls, | :50:22. | :50:24.
commonly used in facial and body scrubs, are already being phased out | :50:25. | :50:27.
in the United States, and today a group of MPs | :50:28. | :50:29.
are calling for the Government In a moment, we'll speak to marine | :50:30. | :50:32.
biologist Dr Laura Foster, but first we sent our reporter | :50:33. | :50:36.
Lesley Ashmall out to buy some You have come back with quite a | :50:37. | :50:46.
stash. This is just a tiny handful of the 80 or so products out there | :50:47. | :50:50.
that contain these tiny plastic microbeads. You will know what I | :50:51. | :50:56.
mean, the small, abrasive beads in a lot of exfoliating creams and so on. | :50:57. | :51:03.
You can see them clearly in some products. You can. Supposedly, if | :51:04. | :51:11.
you are very thorough at exfoliating in the shower, you can release as | :51:12. | :51:16.
many as 100,000 of these tiny plastic beads into the sea. And is | :51:17. | :51:25.
it always clear? It isn't always clear, even when you can see them. | :51:26. | :51:29.
Some products label very clearly that they have got microbeads in | :51:30. | :51:34.
them. With others, you have to look at the tiny small print on the back. | :51:35. | :51:38.
Polythene is one of the most common ingredients of microbeads. But some | :51:39. | :51:46.
products are a bit misleading. For example, the toothpaste we see here | :51:47. | :51:51.
says it has bicarbonate of soda in it, so you would think that was the | :51:52. | :51:55.
abrasive ingredient. A natural ingredient. But actually, if you | :51:56. | :52:03.
look closely, they have also got the polythene in them. Lawro, you are | :52:04. | :52:10.
concerned about the impact of the plastic on the marine environment -- | :52:11. | :52:15.
Lawro. What are your concerns? Our concerns are that people are buying | :52:16. | :52:22.
these products, they are using them and than that plastic is ending up | :52:23. | :52:25.
in the ocean and being ingested by marine organisms. How much plastic | :52:26. | :52:30.
do you think there is in the ocean? Millions of tonnes are being | :52:31. | :52:36.
released into the ocean over a year. And this is a highly preventable | :52:37. | :52:42.
problem. The report is saying we can do something about this. The concern | :52:43. | :52:49.
is that fish are consuming this. What are the fears about the impact | :52:50. | :52:56.
on fish, and punitively in the end on people consuming those fish -- | :52:57. | :53:02.
presumably? We already know that consuming microplastics has a | :53:03. | :53:07.
negative impact in terms of reproduction. So you can imagine | :53:08. | :53:13.
that they are ingesting this and then they are feeling full, for | :53:14. | :53:18.
example. Unfortunately, it is not as simple as that. This allows certain | :53:19. | :53:22.
chemicals to be concentrated in these microplastics, which has | :53:23. | :53:29.
potential for added health problems. If it is causing health problems for | :53:30. | :53:34.
fish, what is it doing to us when we put it on our faces? We don't know, | :53:35. | :53:39.
and there has not been any proper research on the harm it could do us. | :53:40. | :53:43.
But there is a general international concern that we have way too much | :53:44. | :53:47.
plastic in our oceans, that it isn't good for anyone. You mentioned the | :53:48. | :53:51.
United States phasing it out. Europe is also looking for a ban. This | :53:52. | :53:57.
report is calling for a reduction in this plastic. If it is phased out, | :53:58. | :54:05.
there will be wholesale changes in the products we have got used to. It | :54:06. | :54:10.
is interesting, because all of these companies say they are working to | :54:11. | :54:13.
phase it out, which would be in line with the US ban. By 2020 at the | :54:14. | :54:23.
latest, they will phase it out. I know Laura may disagree, but they | :54:24. | :54:28.
said it takes time to find and test alternative ingredients. This | :54:29. | :54:33.
product, the Clinique product, the older versions of this have | :54:34. | :54:38.
microbeads. The newer now coming into our do not. Some manufacturers | :54:39. | :54:46.
are at least starting to change the ingredients. Before microbeads | :54:47. | :54:52.
Camelot, there were products. -- before they came along. With sand | :54:53. | :54:57.
and coconut, yes. How long have these products been around the | :54:58. | :55:04.
Laura? The first record we have is 1974, but really in the last ten | :55:05. | :55:12.
years, it has picked up the pace. If you look at an average bottle, you | :55:13. | :55:20.
can see how many thousands of micro plastic bits you can get. In the | :55:21. | :55:25.
Marine Conservation Society, we have been pushing firstly for a voluntary | :55:26. | :55:32.
ban, which did not work. Now we are pushing for legislation. We have had | :55:33. | :55:38.
a statement through from Ahmad Hammer, which says it has been | :55:39. | :55:41.
proactively working towards a new formulation that does not contain | :55:42. | :55:44.
lethally microbeads, which will replace the current product in | :55:45. | :55:50.
December 20 16. -- from Ahmad Hammer. We will develop an | :55:51. | :55:57.
alternative to deliver the results that loyal customers expect. That | :55:58. | :56:00.
was the toothpaste we were talking about. All of these manufacturers | :56:01. | :56:07.
say they are working on it, it just will not come into force yet. A lot | :56:08. | :56:19.
of it will come in by 2017. Laura, are you reassured that it is being | :56:20. | :56:25.
looked at an actual -- manufacturers are starting to do something? One of | :56:26. | :56:31.
the challenges is how they define microbeads. We really want to talk | :56:32. | :56:35.
about microplastics. Microbeads can sometimes only mean one type of | :56:36. | :56:39.
plastic. We want to cover all types of microplastics. When we first | :56:40. | :56:46.
started this project with flora and fauna International, looking at UK | :56:47. | :56:50.
retailers, we were focusing on the scrubs. Then we realised that they | :56:51. | :56:55.
were in things like deodorants, and we saw that actually, we need to | :56:56. | :57:01.
look at a range of products. Shaving foams as well. We also know that | :57:02. | :57:09.
flushable wet wipes have plastic in them. There is a whole range of | :57:10. | :57:12.
products that people have not realised about. Many are focused on | :57:13. | :57:17.
these microbeads. Thank you very much. | :57:18. | :57:22.
Still to come, we'll have more on the earthquake that's | :57:23. | :57:28.
Let's get the latest weather update with Jay Wynne. | :57:29. | :57:35.
Yesterday was a very hot day across swathes of England and Wales. The | :57:36. | :57:47.
heat today is more restricted to East Anglia and the south-east. The | :57:48. | :57:52.
main reason is this rather diffuse era of cloud, which is a weak cold | :57:53. | :58:00.
front drifting slowly eastwards, introducing more clout for Northern | :58:01. | :58:04.
England, parts of Wales and the Midlands. Still some spells of | :58:05. | :58:10.
sunshine. Hazy sunshine for East Anglia and the south-east. In | :58:11. | :58:12.
Scotland and Northern Ireland, a much better today than yesterday. | :58:13. | :58:27.
And warmer than yesterday as well. On the other side of that weather | :58:28. | :58:31.
front, we have hot air lingering in the south-east. This evening, we | :58:32. | :58:37.
will see thicker cloud drifting up from the south. A few rumbles of | :58:38. | :58:41.
thunder with that, but not much rainfall. Not as warm as last night, | :58:42. | :58:48.
but still in the upper teens. A bit fresher across Scotland. A decent | :58:49. | :58:54.
day again for Scotland and Northern Ireland tomorrow. A different day, | :58:55. | :59:00.
though, for England and Wales, with heavy downpours developing and | :59:01. | :59:02.
potentially a rumble of thunder. Some of the downpours could be | :59:03. | :59:07.
torrential across northern England. In most places, temperatures are | :59:08. | :59:12.
down a good not draw two. Then into Friday, the wetter weather eases. We | :59:13. | :59:20.
will see wet weather in the north and west, but other places will have | :59:21. | :59:25.
a decent day. More clout in the south-east, but a lot of dry and | :59:26. | :59:34.
bright weather. Towards the start of the weekend, this area of low | :59:35. | :59:40.
pressure will push this weather front and northwards, which will | :59:41. | :59:43.
spread some thundery rain across England and Wales, but it will also | :59:44. | :59:47.
turn things warmer in the south-eastern corner. | :59:48. | :59:57.
It is Wednesday, I'm Joanna Gosling, in four Victoria. | :59:58. | :00:00.
The epicentre was only 65 miles from Rome, with the worst damage | :00:01. | :00:04.
We will bring you the latest. The atmosphere is calm. We still don't | :00:05. | :00:20.
know how many people may be trapped underneath some of the rubble. There | :00:21. | :00:28.
are fears people could be trapped under the rubble. Also on the | :00:29. | :00:36.
programme, more about the increasing strength of the drug MDMA and the | :00:37. | :00:48.
risks. Normally I react well. What does that mean? I would be excited. | :00:49. | :01:11.
Welcome to the programme. At least 20 people have been killed after a | :01:12. | :01:14.
strong earthquake hit central Italy. Amatrice, has said that many | :01:15. | :01:17.
buildings have collapsed. He said he believed half | :01:18. | :01:21.
of the town had gone. The quake, which measured magnitude | :01:22. | :01:26.
6.2, hit at about half past three local time this morning and was felt | :01:27. | :01:29.
as far away as Rome and Venice. Reports of lives lost | :01:30. | :01:40.
and buildings reduced to rubble. At 3:30am the earthquake struck, | :01:41. | :01:49.
reaching a magnitude of 6.2. It was felt across large | :01:50. | :02:02.
swathes of the country, The worst hit areas appear to be | :02:03. | :02:04.
small hilltop villages in the area. The Wall fell and did not hit me. I | :02:05. | :02:27.
was lucky. The ceiling fell on my head. I was luckily not hurt. Small | :02:28. | :02:38.
towns are among the worst hit. The mere of Amatrice told Italian | :02:39. | :02:43.
television half the tone was gone. Emergency services treat local | :02:44. | :02:50.
people here, as yet, the extent of the casualties remains unknown. We | :02:51. | :02:55.
don't want to give figures because the risk giving the wrong numbers. | :02:56. | :03:00.
The system is efficient and ready to act. We have difficulties in | :03:01. | :03:04.
reaching areas and we are trying to solve with the help of the Army. | :03:05. | :03:11.
People are trying to accept what happened and this local priest is | :03:12. | :03:18.
distraught. We are living through the tragedy and hoping there will be | :03:19. | :03:21.
the fewest number of victims possible and we will have the | :03:22. | :03:28.
courage to move on. As the day goes on, the true extent of the damage | :03:29. | :03:30.
will be revealed. The tone of Amatrice has a | :03:31. | :03:48.
population of 2700 people. Our correspondent is there. We just made | :03:49. | :03:53.
it here. From what we can tell this looks like one of the worst affected | :03:54. | :03:59.
areas. This is one of the main streets. As I look down at, I can | :04:00. | :04:06.
see damaged buildings on either side of the road. We make our way in with | :04:07. | :04:13.
relief and rescue workers. You can see that they are going about their | :04:14. | :04:17.
work trying to find whether or not anybody is still trapped. Every few | :04:18. | :04:26.
minutes you see somebody going by with a sniffer dog to try to see | :04:27. | :04:33.
whether there are any survivors. The mind that this earthquake hit at | :04:34. | :04:37.
3:30am. Most people here will have been asleep in their homes here. | :04:38. | :04:42.
Right now, the mayor and the authorities, we need to move away | :04:43. | :04:46.
whilst a fire engine comes through. They will be trying to account for | :04:47. | :04:52.
everyone here so they can see if anyone is missing. This is one of | :04:53. | :04:56.
the biggest buildings that has been hit. You can see that it has not | :04:57. | :04:59.
collapsed but is now almost uninhabitable. The dogs have been | :05:00. | :05:05.
going through is building to check for survivors but it has only just | :05:06. | :05:10.
begun here. The relief effort is getting under way. Every moment I | :05:11. | :05:19.
see more coming over the hill. This is a challenge for the authorities | :05:20. | :05:24.
to make sure they can rescue everybody and make sure nobody is | :05:25. | :05:33.
trapped under. Lets talk to a law student in Brighton who is in Italy | :05:34. | :05:34.
looking after his grandmother. Can you tell us what has happened? I | :05:35. | :05:51.
was woken up by this loud noise and then I realised everything was | :05:52. | :06:02.
shaking. The first thing I was thinking was this earthquake is | :06:03. | :06:14.
similar to 2009. I made sure that it was OK for my grandmother as well. | :06:15. | :06:20.
Then I just stayed there. When I went back in, I saw some of the | :06:21. | :06:29.
furniture had collapsed. Thankfully, nothing bad happened just some small | :06:30. | :06:32.
creases. Was there much damage? Just | :06:33. | :06:52.
furniture damage. Not too much damage outside. Mostly because | :06:53. | :06:57.
buildings in this neighbourhood were badly damaged from another | :06:58. | :07:02.
earthquake a couple of years ago, they were built in such a manner, | :07:03. | :07:12.
they were able to withstand this. Did you experience the earthquake in | :07:13. | :07:24.
2009? I did not. But I did in 2011. This was the worst I've experienced | :07:25. | :07:34.
so far. It happened at night. I could not see anything because we | :07:35. | :07:42.
don't have any street lighting. The concern is the scale of it has not | :07:43. | :07:52.
to be assessed. How well do you know the area? What is the population | :07:53. | :08:02.
where you are? The region has many villages. They build on the side of | :08:03. | :08:08.
mountains because the valleys in the mills were swamped it is very | :08:09. | :08:24.
difficult to act in these villages. It is hard to get to these places. | :08:25. | :08:29.
The villagers themselves have a couple of hundred in them. It is | :08:30. | :08:37.
hard to move from one village to the next one. These villages have | :08:38. | :08:49.
withstood problems in the past. They are buildings that were built to | :08:50. | :08:55.
last. We are seeing pictures where the earthquake has brought down some | :08:56. | :09:03.
of these robust stone buildings. It is incredibly sad. Unfortunately, | :09:04. | :09:16.
most of these were built before there were measures for earthquakes. | :09:17. | :09:33.
Thank you for joining us. You were around 50 miles from the worst hit | :09:34. | :09:37.
areas. Thank you for joining us. What is the picture where you are? I | :09:38. | :09:42.
went out this morning and everything seems absolutely fine and calm. Last | :09:43. | :09:52.
night, when I will suddenly, the bed was moving round the room, the | :09:53. | :09:55.
furniture was shaking, my mother was screaming. She is 90 years old, my | :09:56. | :10:09.
first thought was to get to her. There was another quick 20 seconds | :10:10. | :10:15.
after and I went to her bedroom to make sure she was OK. I went outside | :10:16. | :10:23.
the block of flats, it's a new build, the structure should be | :10:24. | :10:34.
sound. The lights were on. The reality of this morning, looking on | :10:35. | :10:39.
the BBC News website. What's devastation has happened. I felt | :10:40. | :10:49.
quite calm at the time. It is very sad to see all these people caught | :10:50. | :10:54.
up in the earthquake. Everyone was talking about it. When you speak | :10:55. | :11:06.
about that, what you've seen on the images that is away from where you | :11:07. | :11:08.
are? It felt really strong, to move a | :11:09. | :11:28.
double bed from the left to the right with me on it, and the | :11:29. | :11:35.
wardrobes and a chest of drawers, we were just looking at pictures on the | :11:36. | :11:50.
walls and they are slightly tilted. It was with quite a force, the | :11:51. | :11:55.
earthquake. It must have been a big shock. Thank you for joining us. | :11:56. | :12:00.
Let's show you some pictures we've got. You can see they are carrying a | :12:01. | :12:11.
little girl out from the rubble. That girl was dug out of the rubble. | :12:12. | :12:18.
It's hard to see how old she is from those pictures. Being brought out of | :12:19. | :12:28.
the rubble. Obviously the focus in the immediate aftermath, trying to | :12:29. | :12:36.
get out to anybody who may be alive and trapped. The rescuers are using | :12:37. | :12:40.
sniffer dogs, mechanical equipment. This is the scene live. It is the | :12:41. | :12:49.
village that the mayor has said has been effectively destroyed, around | :12:50. | :12:53.
half to three quarters of the buildings in that village are | :12:54. | :12:59.
estimated to have been destroyed. It has a population of 2700 and it is | :13:00. | :13:05.

hard that is to do - it's only the ninth time | :20:38. | :20:41.
that's ever happened Earlier, we brought you a film | :20:42. | :20:43.
by reporter James Longman, exploring with Warren Kane, who says there's | :20:44. | :21:01.
no problem taking the drug, along with Dr Dima Abdulrahim, | :21:02. | :21:07.
who specialises in drug treatment. But first, take a look at when James | :21:08. | :21:10.
met MDMA user Leslie. Drugs - they've long been | :21:11. | :21:22.
a part of growing up. But MDMA, which is the main chemical | :21:23. | :21:27.
element in ecstasy, is And it's more powerful | :21:28. | :21:29.
than ever before. The users are also getting younger, | :21:30. | :21:34.
able to buy it online We've joined up with Leslie, | :21:35. | :21:37.
which isn't his real name, and his mates at a festival in | :21:38. | :21:43.
Somerset. For this weekend, | :21:44. | :21:51.
Leslie bought 24 pills. They cost him ?85 and he bought | :21:52. | :21:57.
them off the internet, Because he's buying online, | :21:58. | :22:00.
Leslie thinks he knows So the quick answer | :22:01. | :22:05.
to that is, you don't know But when you buy this | :22:06. | :22:10.
on the internet, You are taking the word | :22:11. | :22:16.
from someone... And you think the level of purity | :22:17. | :22:19.
in these drugs has been going up and because you can buy them | :22:20. | :22:29.
directly from the internet, you can literally log on, | :22:30. | :22:34.
click buy and they are A little later and Leslie | :22:35. | :22:36.
has taken a pill. You can see his eyes wide | :22:37. | :22:40.
with the drug. The MDMA, is it stronger | :22:41. | :22:42.
than you remember? It's not as bad today | :22:43. | :22:49.
as it was yesterday. I think it's because I did it | :22:50. | :22:52.
yesterday. And the night really begins | :22:53. | :22:54.
for Leslie and his friends. But what he did do is he gave me | :22:55. | :22:56.
a pill, and we are going to go and get it tested to check just | :22:57. | :23:13.
what's inside these things. Two weeks later, and | :23:14. | :23:15.
the results are in. If you go back, traditionally, | :23:16. | :23:21.
an average dose in an ecstasy tablet would have been somewhere | :23:22. | :23:33.
between 85-115 mg. So the one you brought | :23:34. | :23:35.
in is considerably higher than that. So, Leslie's pill was as strong | :23:36. | :23:41.
as he thought it was. Trevor says it's incredibly | :23:42. | :23:43.
rare for a user to know It seems MDMA has come | :23:44. | :23:46.
back bigger this year, with a greater variety | :23:47. | :23:55.
of shapes and colours. A sign, perhaps, | :23:56. | :23:57.
of a growing market. I met back up with Leslie | :23:58. | :23:59.
to tell him what we found. So, I have the certificate here, | :24:00. | :24:02.
and the only active substance So it had pretty much exactly | :24:03. | :24:05.
what you thought was in it, 230 mg. Because it was risky buying it off | :24:06. | :24:19.
the dark net, and it coming to you, you really don't know | :24:20. | :24:29.
what they've said. What they said might not be | :24:30. | :24:31.
what's actually in it. This time, the pills Leslie bought | :24:32. | :24:33.
were what he thought they were. But what you actually | :24:34. | :24:39.
get is still a lottery. So, I think probably what he wanted | :24:40. | :24:43.
to make clear was that this is an extraordinary amount | :24:44. | :24:46.
of drugs to be taking. In the end, Leslie took ten | :24:47. | :24:48.
of the pills he bought that weekend. That's nearly two and | :24:49. | :24:54.
a half grams of MDMA. For young people like Leslie, | :24:55. | :24:57.
the drugs are getting stronger, the dangers greater, | :24:58. | :25:07.
yet the party continues. We can talk now to Dr Dima | :25:08. | :25:21.
Abdulrahim, who works with the NHS club drug service in London, which | :25:22. | :25:24.
helps people who think them drug habits are getting out of hand. And | :25:25. | :25:29.
Warren Kane, who has used MDMA since the 1990s, joins us from Cornwall. | :25:30. | :25:36.
Dr Dima Abdulrahim, are you seeing an increase in the number of people | :25:37. | :25:41.
experiencing problems, having taken MDMA? Well, at the club drug clinic, | :25:42. | :25:46.
we see people who have problems resulting from chronic use of MDMA. | :25:47. | :25:50.
There has not been an increase yet, because it usually takes a while for | :25:51. | :25:57.
problems to develop, possibly as a result of the much stronger pills. | :25:58. | :26:04.
But we are aware that there is a new generation of stronger pills going | :26:05. | :26:10.
around, potentially causing severe problems, one in terms of overdose | :26:11. | :26:17.
and drug poisoning, but also a minority who get into trouble as a | :26:18. | :26:23.
term of longer term infrequent use who will end up at services like | :26:24. | :26:28.
ours when they feel the problems have gone beyond what they can | :26:29. | :26:34.
manage, like the moment they feel they cannot stop using on their own. | :26:35. | :26:38.
Do you feel there is a new level of risk as a result of the pill is | :26:39. | :26:43.
getting stronger? Well, it is early days and the research is limited. | :26:44. | :26:48.
But yes, we assume that because of the new generation of pills, which | :26:49. | :26:52.
is significantly more potent than the generation before, the harm will | :26:53. | :26:58.
increase. In the first people who will see the harm is will be people | :26:59. | :27:03.
within emergency departments, who will see people turning up as a | :27:04. | :27:11.
result of overdose of MDMA. Having said that, I don't want to over | :27:12. | :27:18.
sensationalise the issue. We know millions of people use ecstasy every | :27:19. | :27:23.
year, from the crime survey of England and Wales. Warren has been | :27:24. | :27:30.
taking MDMA since the 1990s. I wonder if you have experienced a | :27:31. | :27:33.
difference in the sort of MDMA you are taking now, compared with | :27:34. | :27:39.
previously? From the early days, it was probably similar strengths | :27:40. | :27:43.
anyway, to be honest. So I would say it has gone back to the strength of | :27:44. | :27:48.
the first ones I was taking. So you're saying it was strong, and | :27:49. | :27:52.
then it got weaker and now it is strong again. What is the different | :27:53. | :27:58.
experience when you take those? Have you had a knee problems? No. It's | :27:59. | :28:05.
like with anything. If you take the drug in moderation, it's fine. You | :28:06. | :28:08.
just have to know what your limits are. If you take two or three pills | :28:09. | :28:16.
at once, you will have problems. But I don't think the strength is an | :28:17. | :28:22.
issue, it's just how people use it. Dr Dima Abdulrahim, is that a fair | :28:23. | :28:28.
thing to say, that if you know your limits, you are OK? As with all | :28:29. | :28:32.
drugs, people react differently to the same drug and the same person | :28:33. | :28:36.
may react differently at different times. One person could have a | :28:37. | :28:41.
terrible reaction and the other might not. Absolutely, or the same | :28:42. | :28:45.
person could have a different reaction at different times. But | :28:46. | :28:52.
there is always a risk, because you never know what you are taking and | :28:53. | :28:56.
how potent it may be. Warren, how do you react to that? I think it's very | :28:57. | :29:02.
rare that people have a reaction to it. People have a reaction to | :29:03. | :29:09.
alcohol every weekend, people get poisoned and nothing gets sad about | :29:10. | :29:21.
that. These drugs are obviously illegal, and Dr Dima Abdulrahim says | :29:22. | :29:27.
it is a lottery when you take it. I would not promote people taking it, | :29:28. | :29:35.
it is a personal choice. It is a lottery as to what is in the pills. | :29:36. | :29:39.
If it is pure MDMA, the risks are very low. But the pills are made in | :29:40. | :29:49.
factories where people do not know what is in them. It could be | :29:50. | :29:54.
anything that is mixed with the MDMA. But you are prepared to take | :29:55. | :30:02.
something where you do not know what is in it? I have done in the past, | :30:03. | :30:11.
yes. I have taken that risk. But I am not saying you should. And I have | :30:12. | :30:17.
been fine. What is the difference now? Probably now, there is more | :30:18. | :30:29.
chance that you will get MDMA from what I have heard in your film. So I | :30:30. | :30:36.
would say the risk is less, it is just the strength issue. But if you | :30:37. | :30:43.
don't go crazy, you should be fine. I am not promoting it, but I am | :30:44. | :30:46.
saying I have never had any issues and I have seen more people have | :30:47. | :30:52.
issues with alcohol at the weekend and with MDMA. Dima, how would you | :30:53. | :30:59.
respond to that? Well, as I said, I do not want to sensationalise this. | :31:00. | :31:02.
Many people take it without any serious effects. But sometimes it | :31:03. | :31:10.
does go wrong, and there is a whole host of health harms and social | :31:11. | :31:14.
harms that can happen, in as much as it takes over your life, it affects | :31:15. | :31:22.
work and family. Of course, there is no denying that some people manage | :31:23. | :31:25.
to take it without having any long term effects. But it is a lottery. | :31:26. | :31:38.
You do not know what you are taking, and you do not know the potency of | :31:39. | :31:45.
what you are taking. Dima and Warren, thank you. We will talk | :31:46. | :31:50.
about how MDMA can affect mental health later. If you have been | :31:51. | :31:53.
affected by any of the issues raised in our film and are looking for | :31:54. | :31:57.
further support, please call of the BBC action line. | :31:58. | :32:10.
Let's get the latest on the earthquake in Italy. Let's show you | :32:11. | :32:18.
the latest pictures we're getting. These are live pictures from | :32:19. | :32:23.
Amatrice and you can see that the rescue workers are working their way | :32:24. | :32:27.
through the rubble. One small area of one small village. This has | :32:28. | :32:35.
happened in a rural area where there are a number of hilltop villages, | :32:36. | :32:51.
and that quake has brought down a number of buildings but at this | :32:52. | :32:57.
stage it is still difficult to establish what the impact will have | :32:58. | :33:02.
been in terms of the number of casualties. It was a magnitude 6.2 | :33:03. | :33:17.
quake and it hit at 3:30am. It was felt as far away as Rome and Venice. | :33:18. | :33:21.
This particular tone we are looking at has said that more than half the | :33:22. | :33:28.
buildings in the town have been destroyed. The epicentre was close | :33:29. | :33:37.
to Perugia. Buildings have collapsed and many people are still missing. | :33:38. | :33:44.
The intensity of this has been compared to one in April 2009 in | :33:45. | :33:53.
which 2009 people died. Emergency services I using sniffer dogs as | :33:54. | :34:03.
part of the rescue. Pope Francis cancelled a speech he was due to be | :34:04. | :34:05.
giving. The mother of a British man accused | :34:06. | :34:25.
of trying to grab a police officer's gun to shoot the Donald Trump has | :34:26. | :34:28.
been granted the chance to visit him in prison. The 20-year-old has | :34:29. | :34:35.
pleaded not guilty to disrupting an official function and weapon charges | :34:36. | :34:42.
that could get him up to 30 years in prison. | :34:43. | :34:44.
I want the fairest possible outcome for my son. | :34:45. | :34:46.
He attempted to do something very severe and that needs to be | :34:47. | :34:49.
taken into consideration, but I need to know how it's come | :34:50. | :34:51.
to this point, what has happened to him in the last year in America? | :34:52. | :34:57.
Who he has been mixing with, what has put these | :34:58. | :35:00.
Because people with autism, they do suffer with | :35:01. | :35:10.
single-mindedness, but for someone who has never been | :35:11. | :35:12.
considering politics in any way to be so extreme, | :35:13. | :35:15.
something, somewhere, has changed that. | :35:16. | :35:19.
Do you accept he might potentially get a lengthy prison sentence? | :35:20. | :35:23.
I have been told through reading the press he faces 30 | :35:24. | :35:26.
years in prison and a ridiculous amount of fines. | :35:27. | :35:29.
There is no way he would be able to cope with that. | :35:30. | :35:32.
As I said, he's a gentle, very calm person by nature, | :35:33. | :35:43.
and he would just see there is no point. | :35:44. | :35:45.
Why would he live the next 30 years of his life in the situation? | :35:46. | :35:49.
So I fear he would attempt to commit suicide again. | :35:50. | :35:58.
The latest as you will be able to visit him. Yes. Unfortunately, my | :35:59. | :36:11.
mother and daughter would love to visit as well. I'm hoping we can | :36:12. | :36:24.
raise the funds. When do you think you can go out and see him | :36:25. | :36:34.
face-to-face. How have you been able to contact him? He made reverse | :36:35. | :36:43.
charge calls to me, I have received a bill of thousands of pounds which | :36:44. | :36:49.
is ridiculous. When I speak to him he is extremely distressed and | :36:50. | :37:01.
angry. He's just not coping. He just wants to come back to the UK and get | :37:02. | :37:12.
help. That is what you want. He went there as an adult, why should he not | :37:13. | :37:17.
face justice in the United States as an adult? As long as he faces | :37:18. | :37:21.
justice I cannot see why it should be in the UK. You have the | :37:22. | :37:25.
facilities to give him the care he needs. It would be costly to them | :37:26. | :37:32.
over there. Why should he be brought back here? The help he needs is not | :37:33. | :37:37.
available over there. He's a young man with considerable, extensive | :37:38. | :37:40.
medical health conditions that are very complex and severe. He is still | :37:41. | :37:53.
very much a little boy in an adult's body. You said he does not | :37:54. | :37:59.
understand the seriousness of the situation. You are saying he's very | :38:00. | :38:20.
sorry for what has happened. He understands now. He did not realise | :38:21. | :38:26.
at the time. People with autism understand things in a different way | :38:27. | :38:31.
to the rest of us. He was clearly not in the right frame of mind. I'm | :38:32. | :38:41.
not saying for one minute he should not have a sentence but it needs to | :38:42. | :38:44.
be over here where he can have love and support from his family | :38:45. | :38:53.
alongside any psychiatric care. We are fundraising for legal fees on | :38:54. | :39:03.
the crows Justice website. Let's bring you an update on the latest | :39:04. | :39:08.
death toll. We are hearing that the number of people believed to have | :39:09. | :39:15.
died in the quake is 37. It has just gone up in the past few moments from | :39:16. | :39:23.
20. Obviously, this is still unfolding situation with the quake | :39:24. | :39:32.
hitting. Emergency services still trying to get a handle on how this | :39:33. | :39:45.
has affected them. We are focusing on two places which are the worst | :39:46. | :39:57.
hit areas. Amatrice has a population of 2700. You can expect that people | :39:58. | :40:07.
will have been asleep in their beds. It is a situation of trying to | :40:08. | :40:14.
establish how many people are alive and how many villages are affected. | :40:15. | :40:24.
The latest figure that we have is at least 37 have been killed in that | :40:25. | :40:26.
earthquake. Earlier this year, the families | :40:27. | :40:30.
of the 96 men, women and children who lost their lives | :40:31. | :40:33.
at the Hillsborough disaster were told that their loved ones | :40:34. | :40:37.
were unlawfully killed, Now those looking at the criminal | :40:38. | :41:06.
investigation into the disaster have released new images of 19 people | :41:07. | :41:06.
they think may have invaluable information that could lead | :41:07. | :41:07.
to prosecutions in the Operation Resolve is | :41:08. | :41:07.
the network which was set up to gather evidence that may help | :41:08. | :41:08.
bring some of those responsible which launches today, | :41:09. | :41:08.
hopes to get more answers Our correspondent | :41:09. | :41:10.
Sima Kotecha spoke to the Senior Investigating Officer | :41:11. | :41:10.
at Operation Resolve, Neil Malkin. It is an appeal for 19 people | :41:11. | :41:10.
who were outside gate C at 2:52pm We want to be able to try to trace | :41:11. | :41:15.
these people, to interview them and understand what they've got | :41:16. | :41:21.
to say and what they heard There are so many in that footage, | :41:22. | :41:25.
that you've picked out What is it about them | :41:26. | :41:31.
you want to know? It is their proximity to the opening | :41:32. | :41:36.
of that gate at that time. By choosing a group of people, | :41:37. | :41:46.
we hope to give them the best In previous witness appeals, | :41:47. | :41:49.
we've relied heavily Now we are trying to provide | :41:50. | :41:52.
context, so people can decide if they were in a group of people, | :41:53. | :41:56.
whether they interacted It might help them jog | :41:57. | :42:02.
their memories about In our Liverpool studio | :42:03. | :42:05.
is lawyer Elkan Abrahamson, who represented 20 of the families | :42:06. | :42:12.
at the new inquests. In Birmingham is Lou Brookes - | :42:13. | :42:17.
she lost her brother, Andrew Mark Brookes, | :42:18. | :42:20.
in the disaster. speak to Becky Shah - | :42:21. | :42:28.
her mother Inger was also amongst What is your reaction to this latest | :42:29. | :42:43.
release of CCTV footage showing the 19 people who could have | :42:44. | :42:52.
information? I welcome anyone with information that can help with the | :42:53. | :42:58.
enquiry. However, I must say I'm not entirely sure why we are focusing on | :42:59. | :43:06.
19 individuals outside gate C when the inquest went into the issues in | :43:07. | :43:20.
quite some depth. I think they would be better off targeting resources | :43:21. | :43:33.
and time towards the cover-up. You represent several of the families. | :43:34. | :43:43.
What is your perspective on this? I would not want to discourage | :43:44. | :43:48.
evidence -- witnesses from coming forward but we are very puzzled as | :43:49. | :43:56.
to why they are pursuing this line of enquiry. "With The theory that | :43:57. | :43:57.
the gate was open before the order was given. Their timings were wrong | :43:58. | :44:03.
and we showed them that and they still pursued this theory. I think | :44:04. | :44:10.
this is a dead end and a waste of resources. They should be focusing | :44:11. | :44:16.
on allegations of cover-up which were not fully explored. The senior | :44:17. | :44:25.
investigating officer says this is about thoroughness so they can make | :44:26. | :44:31.
sure that when the cases go to the CPS they get is clear picture as | :44:32. | :44:38.
possible. Why do you think putting out this CCTV indicates what you are | :44:39. | :44:51.
suggesting? If the case was Boro, should that not have been raised in | :44:52. | :44:55.
the inquest? Why are they only trying to approach these witnesses | :44:56. | :45:02.
now. It helps to be thorough but the fact is, they will not speak to the | :45:03. | :45:10.
people in the stadium that day, each of the people, there needs to be | :45:11. | :45:14.
selection and they need to decide what is important. This is a | :45:15. | :45:19.
dead-end they should not be pursuing, I believe. Your brother | :45:20. | :45:23.
died at Hillsborough. What is your thought? I absolutely believe. I'm | :45:24. | :45:32.
disgusted. I'm going to go one step further. I have a serious concern | :45:33. | :45:38.
for their motives and their objectives for pursuing this issue. | :45:39. | :45:48.
A jury, during the inquest, established. We know who gave the | :45:49. | :45:55.
authority to open gate C. If they had put so much time and effort into | :45:56. | :46:00.
concentrating on other individual families evidence, they might have a | :46:01. | :46:09.
few more happy families, I have serious reservations about it. They | :46:10. | :46:17.
need to stop wasting taxpayers money and start investigating other areas. | :46:18. | :46:20.
This is a complete dead-end and they are wasting time and money. I'm | :46:21. | :46:30.
absolutely outraged by it. I'm very, very suspicious. I question their | :46:31. | :46:35.
motives. I really do. Becky, it is clear that you have | :46:36. | :46:49.
very little trust left. I would totally echo what Lou just said. I | :46:50. | :46:56.
have serious reservations about the police investigating the police in | :46:57. | :47:02.
any case. The history of Hillsborough is that the original | :47:03. | :47:08.
investigation, which started in 1989, was an absolute fudge. It was | :47:09. | :47:18.
a disgrace. So I don't think lessons have been learned, unfortunately, | :47:19. | :47:22.
since those days. And I agree, I think this is disgusting and I am | :47:23. | :47:28.
completely suspicious about their motives. It could be a case of | :47:29. | :47:35.
trying to shift the blame again. After the openness of the inquest | :47:36. | :47:41.
and everything that was said at the inquest by politicians and others, | :47:42. | :47:47.
do you still not trust but things are in a different place? Absolutely | :47:48. | :47:52.
not. I don't trust anybody in authority where Hillsborough is | :47:53. | :48:03.
concerned. The establishment think that giving us the unlawfully killed | :48:04. | :48:07.
verdict is going to make us happy and walk away. They have got another | :48:08. | :48:14.
think coming. To me, this verdict is not the end, this is the beginning. | :48:15. | :48:22.
I am in this for the long haul. So if they think they are going to | :48:23. | :48:26.
repeat history by trying to make everybody happy, I will not be happy | :48:27. | :48:33.
until I see people, certain people and organisations, in the witness | :48:34. | :48:41.
box and hopefully, some of them behind prison bars. Thank you all | :48:42. | :48:46.
for joining us. And if you recognise any of the 19 | :48:47. | :48:50.
people we have been showing you, you can go to the website. | :48:51. | :49:00.
We have been talking this morning about the physical risks associated | :49:01. | :49:03.
with taking increasingly strong ecstasy and MDMA, but there is also | :49:04. | :49:07.
concern about the effect it could have on mental health. Radio 1 | :49:08. | :49:10.
Newsbeat's Jim Connelly has the details. What are the concerns? We | :49:11. | :49:17.
know the concerns about the physical effects and the deaths connected to | :49:18. | :49:20.
it. The police have linked a lot of those deaths to this increasingly | :49:21. | :49:24.
strong ecstasy that is on the market at the minute, but we have been | :49:25. | :49:28.
speaking to psychologists and medical experts who are worried | :49:29. | :49:34.
about the effects on the brain am a the cognitive effects, the ability | :49:35. | :49:38.
to remember and process information, paranoia, things like that. We spoke | :49:39. | :49:43.
to a guy called Phil Murphy from a till university. He has studied the | :49:44. | :49:50.
drug for 25 years. I have worked in the field of ecstasy research for | :49:51. | :49:58.
nearly 20 years. The risk now, in terms of young people using stronger | :49:59. | :50:04.
ecstasy to be compared with the late 1990s, is higher in terms of being | :50:05. | :50:13.
able to retain the ability to regulate emotion, your ability to | :50:14. | :50:16.
think clearly and memorise efficiently. The danger is much | :50:17. | :50:23.
greater now, in my opinion, than in the late 1990s, because of the | :50:24. | :50:29.
greater strength of ecstasy today. It is a drug that has been around | :50:30. | :50:37.
for years. Who is using it today? Well, it kind of went away for a | :50:38. | :50:40.
while. It had a period during the 90s which one of your guests talked | :50:41. | :50:45.
about when it was a drug of choice and was very strong. Then it became | :50:46. | :50:50.
weak and low quality, so people were not using it in the same way. We | :50:51. | :50:55.
then saw the rise of legal highs and substances that took away from its | :50:56. | :50:59.
interest for people, but now it has seen a resurgence. There was a | :51:00. | :51:02.
report out last year that said it is becoming stronger and more popular. | :51:03. | :51:07.
It now tends to be people at festivals, taking it in a binge | :51:08. | :51:13.
rather than the kind of week in, week out use we saw when it came | :51:14. | :51:19.
onto the scene. People have got in touch with us who have noticed this | :51:20. | :51:23.
increasing strength and the problems they have seen. We spoke to a guy | :51:24. | :51:27.
called Gaz, who we had to disguise because he didn't want his profile | :51:28. | :51:30.
put out there, and also someone called Grace, who uses it at | :51:31. | :51:37.
festivals. And in his words, he used it far too much. Going out on a | :51:38. | :51:45.
weekend, friends, socialising, try a little bit of this and that. Then it | :51:46. | :51:51.
became a more regular occurrence. Was similar for you? Definitely. I | :51:52. | :51:58.
started out doing, and things like ecstasy and smoking weed. Then it | :51:59. | :52:04.
escalated into thinking that was not enough. It was great for partying, | :52:05. | :52:09.
but as we got older, we got more chilled, so we directed things | :52:10. | :52:13.
towards taking things to make us hallucinate. Mentally, how does it | :52:14. | :52:19.
feel when you have overdone it, mainly with ecstasy? Drained. You | :52:20. | :52:26.
feel really tired on a come-down, like there is nothing good in life. | :52:27. | :52:33.
You have a really bad next day. But I have personally felt that the high | :52:34. | :52:36.
at the time was worth it. It is like a hangover. Tell me the mental | :52:37. | :52:45.
issues you have had coming off it? I had lots of paranoia. I have always | :52:46. | :52:51.
been quite a paranoid person anyway, but the drugs enhance it 100 fold. | :52:52. | :52:58.
Mood swings are a big one. I could be your best friend one minute, and | :52:59. | :53:02.
the next minute, don't talk to me ever again! I feel quite alone as | :53:03. | :53:09.
well sometimes. You're very needy, but very alone at the same time. You | :53:10. | :53:14.
want someone to be there, but you don't. Recently, ecstasy has been | :53:15. | :53:19.
getting stronger. Did you notice the increase in strength in MDMA and | :53:20. | :53:24.
ecstasy when you were taking it? Yeah, I have done very different | :53:25. | :53:32.
strengths of ecstasy. When it is stronger, obviously, the highs get | :53:33. | :53:34.
arguably better and you get more out of it in that sense. But are you | :53:35. | :53:40.
also get in the mental health problems associated with it, and | :53:41. | :53:44.
paranoia becomes stronger and sleep gets disrupted the more you take of | :53:45. | :53:53.
it? Logically, that makes sense. But at the same time, if you are not | :53:54. | :53:56.
prone to the negative side-effects, you will not receive them, no matter | :53:57. | :54:01.
how pure it is. Describe the come-down is as you take more | :54:02. | :54:09.
ecstasy. Drug-induced psychosis stays around for a while. It is | :54:10. | :54:19.
quite unsettling. We had a big night out one day, and the next day, we | :54:20. | :54:24.
both looked at each other we crawled out of our corners, like, don't want | :54:25. | :54:27.
to eat, and we were quite unsettled. We were not sure what to do with | :54:28. | :54:30.
ourselves and we thought we should stop doing it for a bit. More and | :54:31. | :54:36.
more people have ended up in hospital for treatment across the | :54:37. | :54:42.
country for mental and behavioural disorders connected to stimulants. | :54:43. | :54:46.
Can you imagine a time when you could have ended up in hospital for | :54:47. | :54:54.
something like that? There were a few occasions where I could have | :54:55. | :54:59.
taken more and ended up in hospital, even for an overdose. You can start | :55:00. | :55:14.
going a bit crazy. It is just weird. A friend of mine took acid once at | :55:15. | :55:20.
an open rave, and he thought people were chasing him. So when we took | :55:21. | :55:24.
him to a festival later that year and he took something completely | :55:25. | :55:28.
different, it brought back that feeling that people were chasing him | :55:29. | :55:32.
and he ended up trying to set fire to the person's tent next to us and | :55:33. | :55:37.
running back to the car. A lot of people will think that doesn't sound | :55:38. | :55:43.
fun. You're messing around with things that are on the edge of being | :55:44. | :55:47.
very dangerous. You could die or profoundly change who you are by | :55:48. | :55:53.
taking this stuff. I think everything comes with its risks. If | :55:54. | :55:58.
you feel you're the type of person that can withstand the risks that go | :55:59. | :56:02.
with it, if you're going to use it rather than abuse it, it's like | :56:03. | :56:07.
drinking. People become alcoholics all the time, yet no one found some | :56:08. | :56:13.
people drinking socially. How long have you been off it? A few months. | :56:14. | :56:20.
Do you feel better? I do, but I have a long way to go. I had heavy usage. | :56:21. | :56:27.
We should make that clear. There is a difference in scales. Your | :56:28. | :56:34.
partying and enjoying it, where as you have probably pushed it too far. | :56:35. | :56:41.
Yeah, it became a daily, more than just a social aspect. For me, it was | :56:42. | :56:46.
day in, day out. There were days I would wake up and there would be | :56:47. | :56:49.
drugs next to my bed from the night before, and that would be my | :56:50. | :56:58.
breakfast. Eat, sleep, sniff, repeat would be the pattern for a while. | :56:59. | :57:03.
When I broke out of that, I felt a lot easier about myself again. You | :57:04. | :57:10.
do lose your sense of who you are. I guess if you are always high, you | :57:11. | :57:15.
don't know who you are. There is plenty more of that at Newsbeat | :57:16. | :57:22.
online and more on Radio 1 Xtra. Back to central Italy, where at | :57:23. | :57:26.
least 37 people have been killed and a more are missing after a 6.2 | :57:27. | :57:30.
magnitude earthquake struck the area. It was felt as far away as | :57:31. | :57:35.
Rome and Venice. Some of the worst damage is in the town of Amatrice, | :57:36. | :57:39.
where at least five people have died. Rescue efforts are under way | :57:40. | :57:42.
to find survivors. The town mayor said the roads in and out of town | :57:43. | :57:50.
are cut off. Half the town is gone. We are preparing a place for the | :57:51. | :57:58.
bodies. In a short to the north of the epicentre, the mayor said there | :57:59. | :58:02.
was a family of four in a collapsed house and there are two small | :58:03. | :58:06.
children among them. Pope Francis said he was stunned by the | :58:07. | :58:10.
devastation. These are the live pictures from | :58:11. | :58:16.
Amatrice, where the search and rescue operation continues. We will | :58:17. | :58:19.
keep you updated on the rescue effort throughout the day on BBC | :58:20. | :58:24.
news. Thank you for your company today. See you at the same time | :58:25. | :58:26.
tomorrow. Bye-bye. The rugby league giants | :58:27. | :58:40.
from Hull FC and Warrington go head-to-head at Wembley | :58:41. | :58:43.
in the Challenge Cup final. | :58:44. | :58:47. |
