Following the attack on London Bridge, we'll hear | :00:18. | :00:20.
from an expert on whether the UK security forces are in need | :00:21. | :00:23.
And the bosses of the world's biggest airlines are holding | :00:24. | :00:29.
We'll take a look at the issues facing the industry | :00:30. | :00:36.
I'm Sally Bundock also in the programme the UK | :00:37. | :00:48.
Prime Minister accuses the likes of Facebook and Google as providing | :00:49. | :00:51.
a "safe space" for terrorist ideology - we'll have the reaction | :00:52. | :00:54.
from the social media giants in a few moments. | :00:55. | :00:59.
The leader of the UK Labour Party Jeremy Corbyn has | :01:00. | :01:03.
accused the government of trying to "protect the public on the cheap" | :01:04. | :01:07.
in a speech focusing on the London terror incident. | :01:08. | :01:10.
On Saturday evening 7 people were killed and dozens injured | :01:11. | :01:13.
in a terrorist attack carried out by 3 men who were shot dead | :01:14. | :01:16.
by police within minutes of the attack taking place. | :01:17. | :01:19.
It was Britain's second major terrorist incident in the space | :01:20. | :01:22.
It began when a hired van was used to knock down pedestrians on | :01:23. | :01:30.
3 men wearing fake suicide vests then left the vehicle | :01:31. | :01:39.
and began stabbing people in pubs and bars in nearby Borough Market. | :01:40. | :01:46.
Within 8 minutes the three men had been confronted | :01:47. | :01:49.
A member of the public was also injured in the exchanges. | :01:50. | :01:55.
The Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn says the reduction in the number | :01:56. | :01:58.
of police officers is a sign the security forces are not getting | :01:59. | :02:01.
Despite this, the Conservative Security Minister Ben Wallace says | :02:02. | :02:04.
the Labour leaders comments mark a U-turn on his previous stance | :02:05. | :02:07.
We were talking two weeks ago, following the events in Manchester | :02:08. | :02:32.
and it is ashamed to be having this conversation so soon but we have an | :02:33. | :02:38.
election and I have mentioned the discussions going on post Saturday | :02:39. | :02:46.
evening about resources in our police, your thoughts. There is no | :02:47. | :02:52.
hiding from the fact that resources have dropped since 2010. Police will | :02:53. | :02:58.
always want more resources to deal with this threat but the response | :02:59. | :03:04.
capability was absolutely fantastic, to be able to deal with it in H-back | :03:05. | :03:14.
minutes was fantastic. --8. The ship will go towards the prevent side of | :03:15. | :03:23.
things -- the shift. This is a policy put in place by current | :03:24. | :03:28.
government is where they are trying to prevent something like this by | :03:29. | :03:36.
having better discussion with Wilson communities? It is part of the | :03:37. | :03:42.
counter terrorism strategy which is a reporting mechanism for people who | :03:43. | :03:50.
have suspicions about people or areas of community that might be | :03:51. | :03:55.
looking to organise and participate in these kind of attacks. It is | :03:56. | :03:58.
about getting in touch with officials. A report in 2016, 7500 | :03:59. | :04:11.
calls were made. Somebody spoke to us to say he is a neighbour of one | :04:12. | :04:19.
of the three men involved in the London Bridge attack and he says he | :04:20. | :04:24.
reported one of them to the police, the same with the Manchester bomb | :04:25. | :04:30.
many saying they were concerned about his behaviour and he had been | :04:31. | :04:34.
reported. Is it just too many individuals being named and they | :04:35. | :04:40.
cannot respond to that? The complexity of the threat we | :04:41. | :04:47.
currently face is an enormous task. 3000 people on a watch list and you | :04:48. | :04:52.
cannot physically watch all those people all the time so you need to | :04:53. | :04:59.
have key targets. 550 active investigations active at one time in | :05:00. | :05:08.
counter terrorism. Did they miss anything? Should they have been | :05:09. | :05:13.
higher prioritise? How can they ensure in future attacks date | :05:14. | :05:20.
prioritise them. Thank you again for coming in and sharing your | :05:21. | :05:22.
expertise. Following the attack this weekend, | :05:23. | :05:24.
the UK Prime Minister Theresa May has hit out at the role of internet | :05:25. | :05:27.
companies which she described as providing a "safe space" | :05:28. | :05:30.
for terrorist ideology. Our reporter Joe Lynam | :05:31. | :05:33.
has the details. Theresa May, the British Prime | :05:34. | :05:44.
Minister, called on the Internet companies to do an awful lot more to | :05:45. | :05:50.
tackle the dissemination of extremist and offensive material on | :05:51. | :05:54.
the Internet. While the tone was new, it was angrier, the message is | :05:55. | :06:00.
not. In the manifesto ahead of the election, the Prime Minister called | :06:01. | :06:05.
for sanctions on Internet companies for failing to back down offensive | :06:06. | :06:11.
material quickly enough. Internet companies responded today saying | :06:12. | :06:15.
they would be doing a lot more. Twitter, Facebook and Google say | :06:16. | :06:19.
they are on an international panel to share material with one another. | :06:20. | :06:23.
They have a database together and digitally print offensive videos and | :06:24. | :06:31.
posts. But with 400 hours of videos posted on YouTube every single | :06:32. | :06:37.
minute and 2 billion active users on Facebook, there is so much that can | :06:38. | :06:44.
be done by soft wear. You need the human eye editorial and judgement. | :06:45. | :06:50.
But it is never enough especially when people are killed on the | :06:51. | :06:52.
street. And security is of paramount | :06:53. | :06:52.
importance to the airline sector. It has performed well in recent | :06:53. | :06:55.
years, despite fierce competition But as the international | :06:56. | :06:58.
trade body - IATA - meets for its annual get together | :06:59. | :07:07.
in Mexico could 2017 be a year Profits last year were at a record | :07:08. | :07:11.
high at $35.6 billion - with passenger numbers up 6.3 | :07:12. | :07:24.
percent compared to 2015. But IATA has since downgraded | :07:25. | :07:27.
its outlook for this year saying the rising cost of oil will provide | :07:28. | :07:30.
a headwind for the industry but also The question of whether the | :07:31. | :07:34.
United States will extend its ban on laptops in the cabin | :07:35. | :07:38.
for ALL international The US already has a ban on large | :07:39. | :07:40.
electronic devices on flights to and from eight | :07:41. | :07:44.
mostly-Muslim countries. With me is Victoria Moores, | :07:45. | :07:48.
European editor Good morning and thank you for | :07:49. | :08:01.
coming in. The issue of security and the laptop ban. What will they be | :08:02. | :08:11.
discussing today? What we saw a few weeks back was this rapidly | :08:12. | :08:18.
implemented ban on large electronic devices, items larger than an iPhone | :08:19. | :08:23.
on specific flights to the US. The UK quickly reciprocated and put in a | :08:24. | :08:31.
band, not quite the same but very similar. In recent weeks, talk of | :08:32. | :08:36.
the widening of the band. Officials in talk with each other about | :08:37. | :08:43.
widening the ban. The impact on traffic could be absolutely huge. | :08:44. | :08:47.
And the impact on some airlines have been huge. Precisely. In the April | :08:48. | :08:58.
numbers, released by IATA, you could see it was in packing travel to and | :08:59. | :09:05.
from the Middle East and IATA IATA saying this could have an impact on | :09:06. | :09:10.
productivity. It could be as wide as it is over $4 billion. 50% of | :09:11. | :09:15.
business travellers have said they would rethink their business travel | :09:16. | :09:21.
if employees cannot take their laptop on board. Tell us about | :09:22. | :09:28.
Brexit as well, the likes of EasyJet grappling with that? Precisely. With | :09:29. | :09:36.
Brexit, a lot of people do not realise how highly regulated the | :09:37. | :09:40.
airline industry it is. For example, the fact that our airlines are able | :09:41. | :09:48.
to fly to Europe is wrapped up in an agreement that we can fly freely and | :09:49. | :09:55.
it took a long time to be put in place. What we are looking at, worse | :09:56. | :10:02.
case scenario, this is what Ryanair have said, cessation of all flights | :10:03. | :10:08.
to and from Europe. In theory it is a bit of posturing. Also flights to | :10:09. | :10:14.
America because we are governed under European rules for our flights | :10:15. | :10:21.
to the US. It is a big thing that needs to be unscrambling an airlines | :10:22. | :10:25.
will need to start taking bookings for next year and they need an | :10:26. | :10:33.
answer sooner rather than later. We will keep close eye on the IATA | :10:34. | :10:38.
meeting. I will see you soon. Saturday's attack happened just four | :10:39. | :10:50.
days before the general election which will go ahead | :10:51. | :10:53.
as planned on Thursday. | :10:54. | :10:56. |
