In a minute we'll cross over to our Asia business hub to hear | :00:35. | :00:51.
about Toshiba's efforts to sell it's microchip business. | :00:52. | :00:56.
It doesn't seem like all that long ago we were talking about Brazil's | :00:57. | :01:02.
meteoric rise to economic stardom as one of the so called BRICS. | :01:03. | :01:09.
But all that has come crashing down thanks to a string of corruption | :01:10. | :01:12.
allegations involving top politicians and companies. | :01:13. | :01:14.
And it could all come to a head again later today as Brazil's top | :01:15. | :01:18.
electoral court resumes it's trial against the country's former | :01:19. | :01:21.
president - Dilma Roussef - and her successor Michel Temer. | :01:22. | :01:26.
This is how the economy has fared over the last five years. | :01:27. | :01:30.
Since Rousseff was voted into office, there have been two | :01:31. | :01:36.
years of recession - ending last week when growth of 1% | :01:37. | :01:39.
was reported for the beginning of this year. | :01:40. | :01:46.
She was impeached ten months ago and succeeded by Michel Temer | :01:47. | :01:48.
who has focused on economic reforms but could now be out | :01:49. | :01:52.
Government policy is important because non-financial companies | :01:53. | :01:59.
owned by the state account for nearly 18% of the economy. | :02:00. | :02:02.
The two biggest are Eletrobras and Petrobras. | :02:03. | :02:04.
The latter is the state owned oil giant at the heart of the corruption | :02:05. | :02:08.
allegations and was once the biggest company in Latin America. | :02:09. | :02:18.
With me is Jimena Blanco, Head of Americas Politics Research | :02:19. | :02:20.
Always good to see you. You are just back from Brazil. Just explain where | :02:21. | :02:35.
Michel Temer sits in this corruption allegation story. If we take this | :02:36. | :02:42.
back to 2014 Wenbo corruption case, -- when it is the first case came | :02:43. | :02:54.
about. When Dilma Rousseff and Michel Temer used corruption money | :02:55. | :02:57.
to finance their corruption campaign. It began right after the | :02:58. | :03:02.
election in 2014 that it is only just now that the court will set to | :03:03. | :03:09.
try those allegations. And what's going to happen? Chanters are, | :03:10. | :03:13.
everybody is expecting the court to make a radical move -- chances are. | :03:14. | :03:21.
It could be that the government and mayor is accused of corruption in | :03:22. | :03:27.
low earth jurisdictions. There is an high probability that the court | :03:28. | :03:35.
could scrap this. He is also facing other court cases and he is also | :03:36. | :03:40.
facing 14 impeachment requests in Congress. And this is seemingly | :03:41. | :03:47.
endemic. It is Dilma Rousseff, it is Michel Temer, it is the former | :03:48. | :03:52.
president and other politicians and leaders. It would seem the judiciary | :03:53. | :04:03.
in Brazil after a clean sweep. They took about this as the World | :04:04. | :04:10.
Heritage case. They say this shows our democratic institutions are at | :04:11. | :04:18.
work on that they are in pendant and they will continue investigating. -- | :04:19. | :04:21.
independent. Is out of office because of this, what will happen | :04:22. | :04:30.
next? There is no direct election after the turn. They will be an | :04:31. | :04:34.
indirect election and Congress will get to choose the interim president | :04:35. | :04:39.
until 2018. In the meantime, the economy has just got its head above | :04:40. | :04:43.
water in the first time in two years. Economic outlook? Think it is | :04:44. | :04:48.
positive because the economy, at this stage, is starting to recover, | :04:49. | :04:51.
regardless of what happens politically. Investors are now used | :04:52. | :04:58.
to this rollercoaster. The right -- the markets have priced this in and | :04:59. | :05:03.
will continue to operate regardless of what happens on the political | :05:04. | :05:08.
side. I know we will talk again as this story unfolds. | :05:09. | :05:16.
Let's talk about a company that we all know well. | :05:17. | :05:19.
Apple has held its annual developers conference in Silicon Valley. | :05:20. | :05:21.
The tech giant has announced a voice-activated loudspeaker | :05:22. | :05:23.
powered by its virtual assistant Siri. | :05:24. | :05:25.
Apple's "HomePod" speaker can respond to questions and control | :05:26. | :05:28.
other devices such as lights and central heating. | :05:29. | :05:30.
Our North America Technology correspondent Dave Lee | :05:31. | :05:32.
This is Apple's a new HomePod. Then use part speaker that they are | :05:33. | :05:51.
billing as a music device unlike Amazon's device. They say it has | :05:52. | :05:55.
spatial awareness so it can fill the room with sale -- sound. I can't | :05:56. | :06:00.
touch it or hear it so I can't you have good it is but it will come out | :06:01. | :06:05.
later this year and will cost $349. First released in the US, the UK and | :06:06. | :06:09.
Australia. Other countries coming in the New Year. One of the potential | :06:10. | :06:14.
downside is that you need an Apple musics of scripture and in order to | :06:15. | :06:17.
get the full integration so if you prefer to use spotted by Pandora, | :06:18. | :06:21.
not the device review. Apple are pretty confident this will give them | :06:22. | :06:26.
a good part of the market in this home space. It speaks to where Apple | :06:27. | :06:37.
wants to position this device as a speaker first. It is about music. Is | :06:38. | :06:43.
that the fact they are focusing on it being a music device, is it a | :06:44. | :06:48.
cover-up for theory not being a very good system compared to a lecture | :06:49. | :06:52.
and Google home? I take your point. Yes, there is criticism in terms of | :06:53. | :06:57.
our series not as smart as are the things. It is a fair criticism. I | :06:58. | :07:02.
think there is a different approach here. It is not driven by necessity | :07:03. | :07:08.
but driven by their play in the home. What you think about the home | :07:09. | :07:17.
pot? Do you have a virtual reality friend or home assistant? -- | :07:18. | :07:20.
HomePod. Get in touch on Twitter. Foxconn could receive some backing | :07:21. | :07:24.
from Apple and Amazon in its bid for Toshiba's | :07:25. | :07:27.
semi-conductor business. Japanese media quoted | :07:28. | :07:28.
the chairman of Foxconn- Terry Gou-as saying that the two US | :07:29. | :07:30.
tech giants are set to contribute Let's get more on this | :07:31. | :07:34.
with Rico Hizon in Singapore. This is my assistance. This piece of | :07:35. | :08:01.
paper is my assistance. Big hitters in the technology industry want a | :08:02. | :08:05.
piece of this very profitable chip business of Toshiba. He mentioned | :08:06. | :08:10.
Apple, Amazon, Taiwan's Foxconn. Western Digital, all very | :08:11. | :08:16.
interested. There are reports that Foxconn may be the highest bidder | :08:17. | :08:20.
because the pricetag is quite pricey. More than 20 billion US | :08:21. | :08:28.
dollars. The talk is then -- they may offer a lot. There have been | :08:29. | :08:39.
concerns expressed about Foxconn's bid. Apple and Amazon might join | :08:40. | :08:44.
forces with Foxconn for a four this semi- conductor arm of the Japanese | :08:45. | :08:55.
conglomerate. The Japanese is a bit to US giants plan to ship in the | :08:56. | :08:59.
fund was a bit could be a triumphant effort that could buy the triumphant | :09:00. | :09:06.
business of Toshiba. The Japanese industrial group is grappling with | :09:07. | :09:09.
huge losses arising from its US nuclear business. The demand for | :09:10. | :09:15.
flash memory chips used for long-time datastorage, smartphones | :09:16. | :09:18.
and other devices is expected to increase on the back of a boom in | :09:19. | :09:23.
data centres or technology companies, Amazon, Google and Apple, | :09:24. | :09:26.
in the age of artificial intelligence and the Internet of | :09:27. | :09:32.
things. That is what makes Toshiba's chip business indeed very attractive | :09:33. | :09:36.
to the big hitters in the industry so we will have to wait and see if a | :09:37. | :09:41.
deal will be done by the end of June. | :09:42. | :09:43.
A note of caution for most of the main markets. We have had seven | :09:44. | :09:55.
weeks in a row for markets having a good time so caution ahead of the | :09:56. | :10:00.
Federal reserve meeting next week and a UK election. I will see you | :10:01. | :10:02. |
