onwards. And that is why, if you are brave enough to defy parliaments,

:00:00.:00:00.

you would be considered as bold as brass.

:00:00.:02:33.

Colleagues, friends, brothers and sisters, welcome to Event City here

:02:34.:03:39.

in Manchester, to launch the Labour Party general election 2017

:03:40.:03:45.

campaign. What a wonderful city! What a

:03:46.:03:47.

wonderful people! APPLAUSE

:03:48.:03:57.

And, I've got to say, I'm terribly excited!

:03:58.:04:03.

About the general election! I'm terribly excited about the policies

:04:04.:04:08.

which Jeremy Corbyn's Labour Party are rolling out in 2017!

:04:09.:04:19.

I'm so proud and so privileged. I was a coal miner in the coal mines

:04:20.:04:25.

of the north-east. What a fantastic job at was. Great solidarity, great

:04:26.:04:29.

camaraderie, friendship. And I really privileged to be joined

:04:30.:04:37.

national campaigns coordinator with my good friend Andrew Gwynne, and

:04:38.:04:41.

I'm also very proud to be parted Jeremy CorbynShadow Cabinet!

:04:42.:04:42.

CHEERING These...

:04:43.:04:53.

These, colleagues, are the future of a very bright new dawn with the

:04:54.:04:59.

Labour Party. Listen, this election on aids of June is extremely

:05:00.:05:05.

critical, colleagues. -- on the 8th of June. It isn't complex, it isn't

:05:06.:05:11.

in any way work at science, but it is about serving the many and not

:05:12.:05:17.

the few, as you see on some of the boards. It is about justice, it

:05:18.:05:24.

about equality and fairness across our communities. This election is

:05:25.:05:29.

about transforming our society, making people's lives are better in

:05:30.:05:31.

this country. APPLAUSE

:05:32.:05:38.

Colleagues... Colleagues, we cannot simply

:05:39.:05:49.

continue down the Welch red Tory pass, where a fuel at the very top

:05:50.:05:56.

take the spoils and the rest of the country struggles to cover their way

:05:57.:06:03.

in the world -- we cannot continue down the well-tread Tory path. An

:06:04.:06:06.

election is about the future of the many, not the few. Building a more

:06:07.:06:11.

equal society, a fairer society, a better society for all. You know, I

:06:12.:06:18.

am ashamed at times to see how this country has fallen into the state it

:06:19.:06:26.

actually is. Where it -- we are the sixth richest economy in the world.

:06:27.:06:30.

I want no lectures off anybody telling us we have not got the

:06:31.:06:35.

finances to look after those at the bottom! I don't want anybody kidding

:06:36.:06:44.

me about the wealth of this nation! In the last 12 months, the top 1000

:06:45.:06:52.

richest people in this country increased their wealth by ?83

:06:53.:06:59.

billion whilst one million-plus people use food banks simply to

:07:00.:07:05.

exist. No lectures on the wealth of this nation. We have seen the

:07:06.:07:08.

National Health Service brought to its knees with staff are

:07:09.:07:14.

undervalued, with the children left in corridors or, indeed, using

:07:15.:07:19.

chairs for beds. We have all seen that photograph in the Daily Mirror

:07:20.:07:26.

where we had this little baby in a critical condition in hospital lying

:07:27.:07:35.

on two patio chairs pushed together. Colleagues, it's got to change!

:07:36.:07:41.

CHEERING We've seen the schools...

:07:42.:07:44.

We've seen our schools under attack, with the least well off seeing the

:07:45.:07:51.

biggest cuts and the Prime Minister pursuing a wasteful and divisive

:07:52.:07:54.

Academy and grammar School programme. And we will not stand by

:07:55.:07:59.

and allow this to happen. We have seen the world of work change beyond

:08:00.:08:04.

recognition, with a secure job now the stuff of dreams for many people.

:08:05.:08:12.

With 1 million people on zero-hours contracts. Colleagues, we will ban

:08:13.:08:15.

zero our contracts! CHEERING

:08:16.:08:27.

-- we will ban zero-hours contracts! We have seen a rise in poverty

:08:28.:08:30.

across-the-board, with child poverty, with pensioner poverty,

:08:31.:08:36.

with fuel poverty all soaring. We hear harrowing stories about

:08:37.:08:45.

children, kids, babies, at school, putting their arms up and asking to

:08:46.:08:48.

go to the toilet and then visiting the cloakroom to get the sandwiches

:08:49.:08:57.

out of somebody else's packed lunch. We hear the harrowing stories of

:08:58.:09:02.

kids, our future, rating the refrigerators in the schools instead

:09:03.:09:08.

of being fed properly like this party promises. Cannot be allowed to

:09:09.:09:19.

continue, man. It's 2017, and the Labour Party will stand to put up

:09:20.:09:26.

with it no more, colleagues. APPLAUSE

:09:27.:09:34.

It's doesn't have to be this way! Politics is about choices, and this

:09:35.:09:40.

election offers our party a golden opportunity. It offers a chance to

:09:41.:09:45.

offer the British people a programme that will improve their lives and

:09:46.:09:48.

make our country a better place to live. The manifesto is bold, it is

:09:49.:09:54.

imaginative, it is distinct. It is a great Labour Party manifesto. It

:09:55.:10:01.

seeks to excite the young people, it seeks to protect sure start, ensure

:10:02.:10:04.

school funding is maintained, giving everybody a hot nutritious meal at

:10:05.:10:09.

school, restoring the education maintenance allowance and university

:10:10.:10:13.

bursaries. For the Older People, we ensure the pensions triple lock will

:10:14.:10:17.

be maintained, free bus passes and winter fuel will be maintained.

:10:18.:10:25.

Proper funding of the NHS and social care. And what is really important

:10:26.:10:30.

for the Older People is tackling the epidemic of loneliness. These are

:10:31.:10:35.

guarantees from Jeremy Corbyn's Labour Party. You know, we can do

:10:36.:10:43.

pet if -- better for people in work. Giving the workforce arise, a rise

:10:44.:10:49.

in the living wage to its real level, banning zero-hours contracts

:10:50.:10:52.

and insuring workers have the boys. We could do better for public

:10:53.:10:57.

services and ensure the currently undervalued staff, who are

:10:58.:11:00.

overstretched, not only get a pay rise but the resources to do their

:11:01.:11:05.

jobs properly. Whose sole Theresa May on the BBC only last week? I was

:11:06.:11:13.

amazed. She was asked, is it fair that nurses have had a 14% pay cut

:11:14.:11:22.

since 2010? And are having to use food banks? She was bonded by saying

:11:23.:11:27.

the reason nurses are using food banks is extremely compact -- she

:11:28.:11:31.

responded by saying. It's not complex, they have not got enough

:11:32.:11:36.

money to feed themselves and their families. And that must end,

:11:37.:11:37.

comrades. APPLAUSE.

:11:38.:11:50.

You know, when you want to change, when we want to change the political

:11:51.:11:54.

landscape of work, when we are looking to change politics in the

:11:55.:12:01.

best interests of everyone, when we are up against the might of the

:12:02.:12:04.

establishment who'll do whatever it takes to cling on to that unchecked

:12:05.:12:15.

powers, we'll all experience setbacks as individuals and as a

:12:16.:12:19.

party. We get knocked down but we've got to get back up again, dust

:12:20.:12:23.

ourselves down and get back into this fight for Government. We might

:12:24.:12:30.

be down at times. As I say, dust yourselves down, there's a fight to

:12:31.:12:33.

be had. You know, we've got... APPLAUSE.

:12:34.:12:40.

A great political movement. In the movement, the Labour and the Trade

:12:41.:12:46.

Union movement was born in struggle. They don't call it the struggle for

:12:47.:12:50.

nothing. And we understand the challenges here. Never forget the

:12:51.:12:55.

sacrifices that our predecessors made to deliver the institutions and

:12:56.:13:00.

freedoms we now enjoy. And remember, things can be different. It doesn't

:13:01.:13:09.

have to be this way. No-one should be held back and you need no-one

:13:10.:13:13.

behind. Colleagues, we have a duty, we have a moral duty, we have a

:13:14.:13:19.

political obligation, to communicate and articulate our messages, our

:13:20.:13:24.

policies in every town, every city, every village here in the UK we must

:13:25.:13:36.

speak to people door-to-door in whatever capacity we can. Anybody

:13:37.:13:43.

who wants to help can next the number on the screen supposed to be

:13:44.:13:53.

behind me now, see. Colleagues, I'm concluding quite simply by saying,

:13:54.:13:59.

let's mobilise a winning future for all. Let's win the hearts and minds

:14:00.:14:05.

of our people and deliver a fairer, equal Society for The many and not

:14:06.:14:10.

the few. On wards and upwards! CHEERING AND APPLAUSE.

:14:11.:14:22.

Thank you. Thank you. Colleagues, thank you. Thank you so much.

:14:23.:14:42.

Colleagues, it gives me great pleasure to introduce the next

:14:43.:14:57.

speaker, Julie Hesmond-Halsh. Best-known for Corrie and more

:14:58.:15:02.

recently broad church and Happy Valley. Julie, the floor's yours.

:15:03.:15:12.

Thank you. CHEERING AND APPLAUSE.

:15:13.:15:21.

Thank you. Right, well, follow that. Brilliant. Hello, everyone. Good

:15:22.:15:30.

morning. I feel incredibly humbled and honoured to be here today at the

:15:31.:15:36.

launch of the Labour Party general election campaign in this amazing

:15:37.:15:43.

city with its rich history of culture, of industry of protest, of

:15:44.:15:47.

struggle and resistance. CHEERING AND APPLAUSE.

:15:48.:15:58.

When Jeremy Corbyn became leader of the party 18 months ago, I can

:15:59.:16:06.

honestly say that in my adult life I had never felt as excited and

:16:07.:16:09.

exhilarated by Party Politics. APPLAUSE.

:16:10.:16:25.

For me, it felt like a moment. A moment when the Labour Party and its

:16:26.:16:31.

core values and principles would finally be in line with my own

:16:32.:16:38.

deeply held socialist beliefs about equality, justice and peace.

:16:39.:16:49.

APPLAUSE. At the time on the campaign trail, I

:16:50.:16:56.

said I felt like I was part of a new, exciting mass movement of

:16:57.:17:04.

people who gave a toss about stuff. APPLAUSE.

:17:05.:17:10.

Well, this is our moment, this is our chance and from tomorrow we have

:17:11.:17:17.

30 days. 30 days to be on the right side of history. 30 days to take our

:17:18.:17:23.

message into the homes and the hearts and the minds of people who

:17:24.:17:31.

been long disenfranchised with politics thinking that we are all

:17:32.:17:32.

the same. We emphatically are not. APPLAUSE.

:17:33.:17:50.

We have 30 days to create the opportunity for a fairer, better,

:17:51.:17:58.

more equal society and 30 days to save our NHS.

:17:59.:17:59.

CHEERING AND APPLAUSE. Now is the time to put everything

:18:00.:18:16.

else aside, to stand up for what you believe in in your hearts and souls,

:18:17.:18:21.

to get out on to the streets, get this message across loud and clear.

:18:22.:18:30.

Let's turn this mass movement into a Government, a country, a society

:18:31.:18:33.

that truly gives a toss about stuff. Now, everyone please give a warm,

:18:34.:19:02.

riotous welcome to a man who's dedicated his life to giving a toss

:19:03.:19:06.

about other people. Jeremy Corbyn! CHEERING AND APPLAUSE.

:19:07.:19:28.

Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!

:19:29.:20:19.

Thank you, Julie, for that fantastic introduction and to you and Ian for

:20:20.:20:24.

that fantastic welcome here to Manchester today. It's fantastic we

:20:25.:20:31.

are launching our election campaign here in Manchester. Manchester shows

:20:32.:20:40.

the way in many, many things. One, it showed last Thursday, was by

:20:41.:20:45.

electing Andy Burnham as the Mayor of Greater Manchester.

:20:46.:20:53.

APPLAUSE. And can I... Andy! Andy!

:20:54.:21:00.

CHEERING AND APPLAUSE. Well done. Thank you very much.

:21:01.:21:10.

Fantastic. Give them a wave. Thanks, Andy.

:21:11.:21:19.

Andy will be a great Mayor. But just think how much more Andy will be

:21:20.:21:25.

able to achieve if he's working with a Labour Government committed to the

:21:26.:21:29.

many not the few. CHEERING AND APPLAUSE.

:21:30.:21:35.

Andy, thanks, congratulations on your election and the people of

:21:36.:21:38.

Manchester are lucky to have you as their Mayor. Well done, Andy.

:21:39.:21:46.

APPLAUSE. We have four weeks, we have four

:21:47.:21:52.

weeks to take our message to the voters, to convince them, Britain

:21:53.:21:58.

can be better. It can be transformed. It doesn't have to be

:21:59.:22:04.

like this. We can transform Britain into a country that instead of being

:22:05.:22:10.

run for the rich, is one where everyone can lead richer lives.

:22:11.:22:11.

APPLAUSE. And I mean richer in every sense.

:22:12.:22:28.

Richer because all of us have potential to fulfil, family to

:22:29.:22:32.

support, interests to pursue, richer when that potential that is there in

:22:33.:22:39.

all of us is not held back. Because there is no doubt this country is

:22:40.:22:45.

being held back. If your children aren't getting the education they

:22:46.:22:50.

deserve, because the class sizes are too high, then your children are

:22:51.:22:56.

being held back. If you're a young couple or anyone trying to get a

:22:57.:23:01.

home and can't make a home because rent and house prices are too high,

:23:02.:23:08.

then you're being held back. If you've worked hard all your life but

:23:09.:23:15.

you can't pursue your dreams of your retirement because you're supporting

:23:16.:23:19.

your family well into their adulthood, then you too are being

:23:20.:23:27.

held back. But Britain is a rich country, the sixth richest country

:23:28.:23:33.

in the world. We caught a glimpse of that wealth only two days ago when

:23:34.:23:39.

Rupert Murdoch's Sunday Times published its rich list. In the last

:23:40.:23:47.

year, Britain's 1,000 richest people have seen their wealth rise by 14%

:23:48.:23:59.

to ?658 billion. That is six times the total budget of our National

:24:00.:24:06.

Health Service. Imagine the outcry if public sector workers decided to

:24:07.:24:13.

put in for a 14% pay rise. Just imagine it. But it's no surprise

:24:14.:24:20.

that the richest have got even richer after the tens of billions

:24:21.:24:26.

the Tories have handed them in tax cuts. That's what we mean when we

:24:27.:24:31.

say the system is rigged for the rich. So thanks for making that

:24:32.:24:37.

clear, Mr Murdoch. APPLAUSE.

:24:38.:24:46.

And so I don't know if Rupert Murdoch plans to give us any other

:24:47.:24:49.

help during the election campaign, but we are grateful for that

:24:50.:24:52.

information. LAUGHTER.

:24:53.:25:00.

In fact, I am more likely expecting hostility. Our challenge to a rigged

:25:01.:25:05.

system is bound to meet hostile till. Change always involves taking

:25:06.:25:14.

on vested interests and there is a real danger that the Tories'

:25:15.:25:19.

scaremongering and spin machine will make some people settle for less

:25:20.:25:24.

than they should, resign themselves to things the way they are.

:25:25.:25:30.

Underestimating just how many more burdens the Tories could impose if

:25:31.:25:38.

an omission to halt the rich getting riching is not halted. The stakes

:25:39.:25:42.

are high. We know from last week's local elections how big the

:25:43.:25:49.

challenge is. We have to convince the sceptical and undecided. They're

:25:50.:25:53.

not sure which way to turn. Who can blame them? People are alienated

:25:54.:25:58.

from politics and politicians. Our Westminster system is broken and

:25:59.:26:09.

our economy is rigged. Both are run in the interests of the few labour

:26:10.:26:15.

is under attack because we are standing up to the elite, who are

:26:16.:26:21.

determined to hijack Brexit and pay even less tax and take even more of

:26:22.:26:24.

the wealth that we all create. APPLAUSE

:26:25.:26:39.

Labour is under attack because we're standing up to the corporate

:26:40.:26:46.

interests plundering our National Health Service.

:26:47.:26:50.

How much more will be privatised if the Tories get another five years?

:26:51.:26:59.

We are drawing a line under decades of privatisation, from energy, to

:27:00.:27:02.

rail, to health, to social care. APPLAUSE

:27:03.:27:16.

That privatisation has made some people very rich indeed, but it has

:27:17.:27:25.

not delivered richer lives for the majority of our people.

:27:26.:27:29.

In the coming days, we will be setting out our plan to transform

:27:30.:27:36.

Britain with an upgraded economy run for the many, not the few.

:27:37.:27:44.

APPLAUSE Theresa May thinks she can dodge the

:27:45.:27:53.

Tory record by claiming she wants to build a fairer Britain, that she

:27:54.:27:58.

cares about working people. Does she think people will forget

:27:59.:28:06.

how the Tories have actually treated working people? It was this Tory

:28:07.:28:10.

leader who sat alongside David Cameron in Government for six years.

:28:11.:28:17.

She was with him when they introduced the bedroom tax. What is

:28:18.:28:21.

Remona Aly fairer about the bedroom tax? What was fair about racking up

:28:22.:28:31.

tuition fees? Or taking benefits away from people with disabilities?

:28:32.:28:40.

APPLAUSE Or about closing the wonderful

:28:41.:28:50.

Labour achievements, our Sure Start centres around the country. Or

:28:51.:28:59.

starving our schools of the cash they need to pay teachers and all

:29:00.:29:05.

those that work in those wonderful teams in our schools? Or opening up

:29:06.:29:08.

the National Health Service to be feasted on by profiteers? Just in

:29:09.:29:16.

case their talk of fairness doesn't wash, they have another card to

:29:17.:29:22.

play, that this election is all about Brexit and who can play at

:29:23.:29:27.

being toughest with Brussels. Labour will not allow the Tories to put

:29:28.:29:33.

their party interests ahead of the real national interests, the

:29:34.:29:35.

interests of the people of this country.

:29:36.:29:36.

APPLAUSE This election is not about Brexit

:29:37.:29:55.

itself, that issue has been settled. The question now is what sort of

:29:56.:29:59.

Brexit do we want, and what sort of country do we want Britain to be

:30:00.:30:05.

after that? Labour wants a job 's first Brexit, a Brexit that

:30:06.:30:10.

safeguards the future of Britain's vital industries.

:30:11.:30:19.

APPLAUSE A Brexit that paves the way to a

:30:20.:30:27.

genuinely fairer society, protecting human rights and an upgraded

:30:28.:30:31.

economy. Labour's plan to transform Britain

:30:32.:30:41.

will mean a big deal to upgrade the economy, new infrastructure to

:30:42.:30:45.

support the industries of the future and an investment in training and

:30:46.:30:51.

skills to equip our workforce to compete globally. It also means

:30:52.:30:56.

rebuilding our National Health Service and social care services

:30:57.:31:01.

with the funding they need. APPLAUSE

:31:02.:31:14.

It means building a million homes to rent and buy.

:31:15.:31:20.

APPLAUSE And it means tackling the scandal of

:31:21.:31:36.

our pollution, which contributes to 40,000 deaths per year -- tackling

:31:37.:31:38.

the scandal of ALL: HOWZAT! Pollution.

:31:39.:31:45.

-- the scandal of air pollution. We will not be paying lip service to

:31:46.:31:52.

working people, we will introduce a comprehensive programme to

:31:53.:31:57.

strengthen rights at work. Make sure new jobs are good jobs.

:31:58.:32:05.

APPLAUSE And end the race to the bottom in

:32:06.:32:15.

pay, conditions and job security. Low pay and insecurity have spread

:32:16.:32:22.

like an epidemic under the Tories. Labour will invest in skills, jobs

:32:23.:32:29.

and take action to enforce a floor under employment standards right

:32:30.:32:33.

across-the-board so that all jobs are decent jobs, so that all

:32:34.:32:39.

workers, the true wealth creators in society, can play their part in

:32:40.:32:45.

transforming Britain and benefit fully from it.

:32:46.:32:58.

That is why we are fighting to win this election, so we can transform

:32:59.:33:05.

Britain for the many and not the few. When we win, the British people

:33:06.:33:10.

win. APPLAUSE

:33:11.:33:18.

The nurse... The people win. The nurse, the teacher, the small

:33:19.:33:22.

trader, the carer, the builder, the office worker. They all win. Labour

:33:23.:33:27.

is offering a real choice, a real alternative to the rigged system

:33:28.:33:32.

holding us back, and to the Conservatives, who are running our

:33:33.:33:36.

country down. The economy is still rigged in favour of the rich and

:33:37.:33:41.

powerful. When Labour wins, there will be a reckoning for those who

:33:42.:33:45.

thought they could get away with acid stripping our industry,

:33:46.:33:49.

crushing our economy through their greed and ripping off workers and

:33:50.:33:52.

consumers. CHEERING

:33:53.:34:08.

When did the Conservatives, David Cameron, George Osborne, Theresa

:34:09.:34:14.

May, Boris Johnson, ever stand up to their financial backers and demand

:34:15.:34:18.

our money back? APPLAUSE

:34:19.:34:25.

Instead, they make others that the bill.

:34:26.:34:33.

-- that make this foot the bill. Nurses, carers, soldiers, disabled,

:34:34.:34:37.

young people trying to get a home of their own, the elderly looking for

:34:38.:34:40.

dignity in retirement and those working hard to get on, they make

:34:41.:34:46.

them foot the bill. This makes me angry, and I know it makes the

:34:47.:34:52.

people of Britain angry, too! APPLAUSE

:34:53.:35:03.

So today I say to tax cheats, the rip-off bosses and the greedy

:35:04.:35:05.

bankers, enough is enough. APPLAUSE

:35:06.:35:12.

In this election, Labour is standing for decent jobs, investment for the

:35:13.:35:21.

future, shared wealth creation, security at work, affordable homes

:35:22.:35:25.

for all and a fully funded National Health Service and schools.

:35:26.:35:27.

APPLAUSE Training and skills, an end to

:35:28.:35:46.

rip-off privatisation, fair taxation and a fairer and more equal country.

:35:47.:35:52.

As we set out our detailed plans for Britain, the scale of the change we

:35:53.:35:57.

are offering will become very clear. Let's turn our country round. Let's

:35:58.:36:05.

come together to transform Britain. Together, we can win. For the many,

:36:06.:36:07.

not the few. CHEERING AND APPLAUSE. So don't wake up on the 9th of June

:36:08.:36:31.

to see celebrations from the tax cheats, the press barons, the greedy

:36:32.:36:36.

bankers, Philip Green, the Southern rail directors and crooked

:36:37.:36:39.

financiers that take wealth and have got away with it, because they are

:36:40.:36:43.

the party they own. That is the Conservative Party that have won.

:36:44.:36:50.

We have four weeks to ruin their party. We have ball weeks to have a

:36:51.:36:57.

chance to take our wealth back. We have ball weeks to show what kind of

:36:58.:37:07.

country we are. We know that the people of this country don't pass by

:37:08.:37:15.

on the other side. That is the principal we will take into

:37:16.:37:22.

government so that we can unlock every person's potential and

:37:23.:37:27.

everyone can make their contribution, their best

:37:28.:37:33.

contribution, to our society. We have ball weeks to win and transform

:37:34.:37:40.

Britain for the many, not the few. -- we have four weeks to win. We

:37:41.:37:46.

must seize the chance to day and every day until June the 8th!

:37:47.:37:53.

Thank you very much! CHEERING AND APPLAUSE.

:37:54.:38:09.
