For over a century, heavy industry, and in particular steel,
has been the backbone of the South Wales economy.
And yet we see the tragedy unfolding of thousands of people
losing their jobs in the steel industry,
and we have the Welsh First Minister
and the British Prime Minister completely impotent.
Whilst devolution was a good idea,
moving powers from the centre down to Cardiff,
actually, not all the effects have been very good.
It was our membership of the European Union
that gave us expensive energy
at the very same time the Americans went for shale gas
and the Indians went for coal.
Where have been the voices
standing up and saying, "This is not good enough"?
And now, with the Chinese dumping steel on the world's market,
so desperate are they to get foreign exchange,
there is nothing, literally nothing, we can do.
Enough's enough. We don't want Chinese steel dumped upon us.
We want to give the South Wales steel industry a chance to live
and to breathe, and nobody,
nobody in Cardiff's standing up and saying,
"Actually, we should do something about this.
"We should stand up and fight for Welsh jobs."
For democracy to work, you've got to have a voice of opposition.
One of the problems with Cardiff is that too many of the politicians,
whilst they may purport to come from different parties,
actually have the same worldview.
Put Ukip into the Welsh Assembly and let's shake the thing up.
