I suppose you could say I'm lucky. | 0:00:02 | 0:00:03
I've lived my whole life here in Wales | 0:00:03 | 0:00:04
under a Welsh Labour Government. | 0:00:04 | 0:00:06
Of course, things are not always perfect. | 0:00:07 | 0:00:09
There are always tough decisions to be made, | 0:00:09 | 0:00:11
especially with the Tories in London cutting the money Wales gets, | 0:00:11 | 0:00:14
but I've always felt that the Government here has been on my side. | 0:00:14 | 0:00:18
They want to do the right thing by the people here. | 0:00:18 | 0:00:21
But it's not always been like that. | 0:00:21 | 0:00:24
And although they want you to forget it now, I'll never forgive | 0:00:24 | 0:00:27
the Tories for what they've done | 0:00:27 | 0:00:29
to my family, friends and my community. | 0:00:29 | 0:00:31
You know, it makes my blood boil, watching the Tories on TV, | 0:00:32 | 0:00:35
glossing over the terrible things they've done to Wales. | 0:00:35 | 0:00:38
Back in the '80s, they pushed communities like mine | 0:00:41 | 0:00:43
over the edge, put thousands on the dole | 0:00:43 | 0:00:46
and said it was a price worth paying. | 0:00:46 | 0:00:49
Well, we can't let them do the same thing again. | 0:00:49 | 0:00:52
And in this election, a vote for anyone but Welsh Labour | 0:00:52 | 0:00:55
helps the Tories win. It's that simple. | 0:00:55 | 0:00:58
We used to vote Plaid Cymru and even campaigned for them, | 0:00:58 | 0:01:01
but not any more. | 0:01:01 | 0:01:03
They claim to hate the Tories, but Plaid Cymru | 0:01:03 | 0:01:05
has already tried to put them into government here in Wales. | 0:01:05 | 0:01:08
Our country can't afford another five years of UK Tory Government. | 0:01:08 | 0:01:12
They ran our country and our communities into the ground | 0:01:12 | 0:01:14
the last time they were in power. | 0:01:14 | 0:01:16
Because the very things I love about this country are the things | 0:01:20 | 0:01:23
that the Tories did their level best to destroy - the community, | 0:01:23 | 0:01:26
the compassion, the fierce belief in social justice that welcomed me | 0:01:26 | 0:01:30
when I moved here, and it made me want to give something back | 0:01:30 | 0:01:33
to the country that had given me so much. | 0:01:33 | 0:01:36
And that's why I stood to be a Welsh Labour councillor. | 0:01:36 | 0:01:39
I was proud to be elected on these values, these Welsh Labour values | 0:01:39 | 0:01:43
that say no matter who you are or where you come from, | 0:01:43 | 0:01:47
you have a stake in our country and you have a contribution to make. | 0:01:47 | 0:01:51
The Tories said there's no such thing as society. | 0:01:51 | 0:01:54
Well, here in Wales, we know that simply isn't true. | 0:01:54 | 0:01:58
Growing up in the 1980s, I remember all too well | 0:01:58 | 0:02:00
the Tory onslaught on Wales. | 0:02:00 | 0:02:02
Now today, I'm proud to serve alongside my Welsh Labour colleagues | 0:02:02 | 0:02:05
here in our National Assembly, | 0:02:05 | 0:02:07
where we're once again doing our best to stand up for Wales. | 0:02:07 | 0:02:11
And despite the UK Conservative Government slashing | 0:02:11 | 0:02:13
our budget by over £1 billion, | 0:02:13 | 0:02:15
we're determined to put our Welsh Labour values into practice. | 0:02:15 | 0:02:18
That means building new schools and transforming our communities, | 0:02:18 | 0:02:22
while keeping Tory grammar schools out of Wales. | 0:02:22 | 0:02:25
It means putting millions more into social care, | 0:02:25 | 0:02:27
to give our pensioners the dignity they deserve, whilst avoiding | 0:02:27 | 0:02:30
the social care crisis happening under the Tories in England. | 0:02:30 | 0:02:33
But we're doing all of this under the shadow of | 0:02:33 | 0:02:35
a ruthless UK Conservative Government. | 0:02:35 | 0:02:38
With Labour in power in Westminster, we could do so much more. | 0:02:38 | 0:02:42
And we did - I was proud to serve in a Labour Government | 0:02:42 | 0:02:45
that delivered for Wales. | 0:02:45 | 0:02:47
It delivered devolution, it delivered record numbers of police | 0:02:47 | 0:02:50
on our streets and record levels of funding for the people of Wales. | 0:02:50 | 0:02:54
That Labour Government delivered the National Minimum Wage, | 0:02:54 | 0:02:58
increased protection for workers, | 0:02:58 | 0:03:00
the New Deal for the unemployed, pension credits, | 0:03:00 | 0:03:03
invested in our manufacturing industries, | 0:03:03 | 0:03:06
outlawed fox hunting, signed the Kyoto Protocol on climate change | 0:03:06 | 0:03:12
and helped deliver lasting peace in Northern Ireland. | 0:03:12 | 0:03:15
This is what you can achieve in power. | 0:03:15 | 0:03:18
This is why we need a strong team of Welsh Labour MPs back in Parliament, | 0:03:18 | 0:03:23
fighting for their communities and delivering for Wales. | 0:03:23 | 0:03:28
And in recent weeks, I've been out campaigning and meeting people | 0:03:28 | 0:03:32
the length and breadth of Wales. | 0:03:32 | 0:03:35
I've seen the difference Welsh Labour are making in government, | 0:03:35 | 0:03:38
but I've also heard first-hand just what the risks are | 0:03:38 | 0:03:42
if the Tories get back in. | 0:03:42 | 0:03:44
And I just won't let that happen - I got into politics | 0:03:44 | 0:03:46
through my anger at what the Tories did to our country a generation ago. | 0:03:46 | 0:03:50
We got we were done with that kind of politics, | 0:03:50 | 0:03:52
done with the neglect of our public services | 0:03:52 | 0:03:55
that meant record waiting lists at hospitals and crumbling schools, | 0:03:55 | 0:03:59
done with gutting whole industries like mining and steel | 0:03:59 | 0:04:02
and leaving communities without hope. | 0:04:02 | 0:04:04
And make no mistake, that bleak threat still continues to haunt us. | 0:04:04 | 0:04:08
We simply can't afford five more years of Tory cuts, | 0:04:08 | 0:04:11
indifference and cruelty. | 0:04:11 | 0:04:13
Welsh Labour is delivering - | 0:04:13 | 0:04:15
delivering the best GCSE results, a living wage in the NHS, | 0:04:15 | 0:04:18
record employment, | 0:04:18 | 0:04:20
but all this is at risk if the Tories trample all over Wales again. | 0:04:20 | 0:04:24
So, we need your support, more now than ever, | 0:04:24 | 0:04:27
to fight the Tory cuts and together, to stand up for Wales. | 0:04:27 | 0:04:32 |
