Amazing changes happen to our lives

0:00:100:00:12

when people embrace forward-thinking ideas.

0:00:120:00:15

It's easy to forget just how powerful we can be

0:00:150:00:17

when we step forward and choose something new.

0:00:170:00:20

100 years ago, women in Northern Ireland stepped forward.

0:00:200:00:24

A few at first, but the numbers quickly grew.

0:00:240:00:27

They'd had enough of the way things were.

0:00:270:00:29

They wanted equal rights to vote for the people who governed them.

0:00:290:00:32

The idea that women shouldn't have the same rights to vote as men

0:00:320:00:35

seems extraordinary now

0:00:350:00:37

but it only happened because women stepped forward.

0:00:370:00:40

50 years later, in Europe and the USA,

0:00:400:00:43

another generation stepped forward,

0:00:430:00:46

seeking equal votes for everyone and an end to discrimination.

0:00:460:00:50

Some in authority tried to resist but the case for change

0:00:500:00:53

and the numbers demanding it were too strong.

0:00:530:00:56

All over the world, change happens when people step forward.

0:00:560:01:00

Even here.

0:01:000:01:02

In 1998, three out of every four people stepped forward

0:01:020:01:06

to endorse the Good Friday Agreement,

0:01:060:01:09

making clear their intention that no-one,

0:01:090:01:11

whether politician or paramilitary, should take Northern Ireland back.

0:01:110:01:16

That belief in the power of people to change things motivated those

0:01:160:01:20

who stepped forward and started the Alliance Party over 40 years ago

0:01:200:01:24

and it's still what drives us to promote big, forward steps today.

0:01:240:01:28

Big steps like making all our public spaces shared,

0:01:280:01:32

where everyone feels safe to live, work and play,

0:01:320:01:36

free from the intimidation

0:01:360:01:37

that comes from having flags and murals that say "Keep Out".

0:01:370:01:42

But not all politicians support change.

0:01:420:01:44

After all, it's easy to say, "No," to stand still

0:01:440:01:47

or, worse, to take steps backwards.

0:01:470:01:50

Much harder to step forward into the future

0:01:500:01:52

and imagine shared schools where children from different backgrounds

0:01:520:01:56

are taught together and learn to respect each other's culture.

0:01:560:01:59

Not to mention the millions of taxpayers' pounds

0:01:590:02:02

it saves us every year.

0:02:020:02:03

But this isn't our only plan to help Northern Ireland

0:02:040:02:07

take big steps forward.

0:02:070:02:09

We also want to reduce needless, wasteful bureaucracy

0:02:090:02:12

and to make public services more transparent,

0:02:120:02:15

to invest in better childcare, innovation and sustainable transport,

0:02:150:02:19

in education, apprenticeships and youth employment initiatives.

0:02:190:02:23

But to take these positive steps forward,

0:02:240:02:27

we first need you to do the same.

0:02:270:02:29

If you want Northern Ireland to be a better place for everyone,

0:02:310:02:34

do what people have been doing in record numbers in recent years -

0:02:340:02:39

step forward, join Alliance.
