# There is a green hill far away

# We may not know, we cannot tell

# What pains He had to bear

# But we believe it was for us

# He hung and suffered there

# He died that we might be forgiven

# He died to make us good

# That we might go at last to heaven

# Saved by His precious blood

# He only could unlock the gate

# Of heaven and let us in

Beloved in Christ, we come this Eastertide

as witnesses of the passion and resurrection of our blessed Lord.

We are invited to walk, sit and stand alongside Jesus

during the last days of His earthly life.

To receive with gratitude His gift of Himself to save us from our sins.

To witness his agony, betrayal and execution on Calvary,

and, finally, to share the astonishment and joy

of that first Easter morning.

With music, poetry and scripture

we reflect on the all-consuming love of God,

the sacrifice of His son and His glorious resurrection.

As we do so, we remember

all those facing anxiety, illness or bereavement,

and those whose lives are blighted

by war, famine or disease.

We hold them in our prayers and we ask for God's blessing upon them.

whereon never man sat. Loose him and bring him.

And if any man say unto you, Why do ye this? Say ye that the Lord hath

need of him; and straightway he will send him hither.

And they went their way, and found the colt tied by the door without

in a place where two ways met; and they loose him.

And certain of them that stood there said unto them,

What do ye, loosing the colt?

And they said unto them even as Jesus had commanded:

and they let them go.

And they brought the colt to Jesus,

and cast their garments on him; and he sat upon him.

And many spread their garments in the way:

and others cut down branches off the trees, and strawed them in the way.

And they that went before,

and they that followed, cried, saying, Hosanna;

Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord;

Blessed be the kingdom of our father David,

that cometh in the name of the Lord: Hosanna in the highest.

And Jesus entered into Jerusalem, and into the temple.

Richard Crashaw contrasts the roles of the two donkeys -

Balaam's and Christ's.

Hath only anger an omnipotence in eloquence?

Within the lips of love and joy doth dwell no miracle?

Why else had Balaam's asse a tongue to chide his master's pride?

That he should find a tongue and vocal thunder was a great wonder

And he took the cup,

and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and they all drank of it.

And he said unto them,

"This is my blood of the New Testament,

"which is shed for many.

"Verily I say unto you,

"I will drink no more of the fruit of the vine

"until that day that I drink it new

"in the Kingdom of God."

And when they had sung an hymn,

they went out into the mount of Olives.

The agony in the garden.

And they came to a place which was named Gethsemane,

and put it on a reed, and gave him to drink, saying, Let alone;

let us see whether Elias will come to take him down.

John Donne compares the setting of the sun in the West

with the weight of Christ's rising and setting in the East.

Let man's soul be a sphere, and then, in this,

The first Easter Day.

Now upon the first day of the week,

very early in the morning,

they came unto the sepulchre,

bringing the spices which they had prepared,

and certain others with them.

And they entered in and found not the body of the Lord Jesus.

And it came to pass, as they were much perplexed thereabout,

behold, two men stood by them in shining garments,

and as they were afraid and bowed down their faces to the earth,

It was Mary Magdalene

and Joanna, and Mary, the mother of James,

and the other women that were with them and which told these things

unto the apostles.

And their words seemed to them as idle tales,

and they believed them not.

Then arose Peter,

and ran unto the sepulchre

and stooping down he beheld the linen clothes laid by themselves

and departed,

wondering in himself at that which was come to pass.

George Herbert reflects on the oneness of God.
