And you join us on this Easter Day for the second Easter message of | :00:14. | :00:20.
blessing Urbi et Orbi to the city on the world to begin by Pope Francis. | :00:21. | :00:24.
We join the many thousands of pilgrims and worshippers in St | :00:25. | :00:27.
Peter's Square from all corners of world who are in Rome at this | :00:28. | :00:31.
holiest time in the Christian calendar. A huge crowd this Easter. | :00:32. | :00:38.
The Argentinian 166 and a Mac successor to St Peter, who has made | :00:39. | :00:43.
such an impact. His example of humility and some -- simplicity has | :00:44. | :00:50.
led the Catholic faithful. He washed the feet of 12 disabled people. | :00:51. | :00:59.
Today, with flowers strewn along St Peter's Square, the brilliant | :01:00. | :01:04.
sunshine symbolises the joy of Christians as they celebrate the | :01:05. | :01:06.
resurrection and now see Pope Francis emerging onto the balcony of | :01:07. | :01:14.
the Basilica. He is waving now to the crowds. Huge expectation here, | :01:15. | :01:18.
having just presided over the Easter Sunday Mass in the square. He was | :01:19. | :01:24.
driven past the crowds to an enthusiastic reception, every hand | :01:25. | :01:26.
waving back as he waved to them. From the balcony in just a moment, | :01:27. | :01:44.
he will deliver his honour Lee, the Easter message. After the message, | :01:45. | :01:48.
Pope Francis will deliver the greeting which pubs in recent times | :01:49. | :01:52.
have said in at least 60 languages. Last year, however, both at Easter | :01:53. | :01:56.
and again at Christmas, Pope Francis chose to give the greeting only in | :01:57. | :02:02.
Italian. It is not known why he made that particular break with | :02:03. | :02:05.
tradition. We will wait to see what happens today. | :02:06. | :02:31.
So the band has now finished playing and are saluting the Pope. The crowd | :02:32. | :02:38.
is stretching almost all the way from ten to Peter back to the Avenue | :02:39. | :02:45.
that leads up to it. The lectern is being brought before the Pope now | :02:46. | :02:49.
for his Easter message. Cari fratelli e sorelle, buona | :02:50. | :03:05.
Pasqua! Let us hear the Pope now in his own | :03:06. | :03:16.
language. He begins by quoting a passage from Matthew: 28. This is | :03:17. | :03:20.
the church around the world echoes the Angel's message to the women. Do | :03:21. | :03:25.
not be afraid, I know that you are looking for Jesus, who was | :03:26. | :03:31.
crucified. . He is not here, for he has been raised. Come, see the place | :03:32. | :03:38.
where he lay. This is the culmination of the Gospel, it is the | :03:39. | :03:41.
Good News par excellence: Jesus, who was crucified, is risen! This event | :03:42. | :03:46.
is the basis of our faith and our hope. If Christ were not raised, | :03:47. | :03:59.
Christianity would lose its very meaning. The whole mission of the | :04:00. | :04:05.
Church would lose its impulse, for this is the point from which it | :04:06. | :04:09.
first set out and continues to set out ever anew. The message which | :04:10. | :04:19.
Christians bring to the world is this: Jesus, Love incarnate, died on | :04:20. | :04:24.
the cross for our sins, but God the Father raised him and made him the | :04:25. | :04:38.
Lord of life and death. In Jesus, love has triumphed over hatred, | :04:39. | :04:40.
mercy over sinfulness, goodness over evil, truth over falsehood, life | :04:41. | :04:56.
over death. That is why we tell everyone: "Come and see!". In every | :04:57. | :05:02.
human situation, marked by frailty, sin and death, the Good News is no | :05:03. | :05:06.
mere matter of words, but a testimony to unconditional and | :05:07. | :05:19.
faithful love: it is about leaving ourselves behind and encountering | :05:20. | :05:21.
others, being close to those crushed by life's troubles, sharing with the | :05:22. | :05:25.
needy, standing at the side of the sick, elderly and the outcast. "Come | :05:26. | :05:43.
and see!". Love is more powerful, love gives life, love makes hope | :05:44. | :05:59.
blossom in the wilderness. With this joyful certainty in our hearts, | :06:00. | :06:11.
today we turn to you, risen Lord! Help us to seek you and to find you, | :06:12. | :06:15.
to realise that we have a Father and are not orphans, that we can love | :06:16. | :06:32.
and adore you. Help us to overcome the scourge of hunger, aggravated by | :06:33. | :06:35.
conflicts and by the immense wastefulness for which we are often | :06:36. | :06:44.
responsible. Enable us to protect the vulnerable, especially children, | :06:45. | :06:47.
women and the elderly, who are at times exploited and abandoned. | :06:48. | :07:06.
Enable us to care for our brothers and sisters struck by the Ebola | :07:07. | :07:09.
epidemic in Guinea Conakry, Sierra Leone and Liberia, and to care for | :07:10. | :07:13.
those suffering from so many other diseases which are also spread | :07:14. | :07:30.
through neglect and dire poverty. Comfort all those who cannot | :07:31. | :07:33.
celebrate this Easter with their loved ones because they have been | :07:34. | :07:36.
unjustly torn from their affections, like the many persons, priests and | :07:37. | :07:40.
laity who in various parts of the world have been kidnapped. Comfort | :07:41. | :07:49.
those who have left their own lands to migrate to places offering hope | :07:50. | :07:52.
for a better future and the possibility of living their lives in | :07:53. | :07:55.
dignity and, not infrequently, of freely professing their faith. We | :07:56. | :08:12.
ask you, Lord Jesus, to put an end to all war and every conflict, | :08:13. | :08:15.
whether great or small, ancient or recent. We pray in a particular way | :08:16. | :08:27.
for Syria, that all those suffering the effects of the conflict can | :08:28. | :08:30.
receive needed humanitarian aid and that neither side will again use | :08:31. | :08:33.
deadly force, especially against the defenceless civil population, but | :08:34. | :08:36.
instead boldly negotiate the peace long awaited and long overdue! | :08:37. | :09:08.
We ask you to comfort the victims of fratricidal acts of violence in Iraq | :09:09. | :09:13.
and to sustain the hopes raised by the resumption of negotiations | :09:14. | :09:29.
between Israelis and Palestinians. We beg for an end to the conflicts | :09:30. | :09:33.
in the Central African Republic and a halt to the brutal terrorist | :09:34. | :09:36.
attacks in parts of Nigeria and the acts of violence in South Sudan. We | :09:37. | :09:54.
ask that hearts be turned to reconciliation and fraternal concord | :09:55. | :10:09.
in Venezuela. By your resurrection, which this year we celebrate | :10:10. | :10:11.
together with the Churches that follow the Julian calendar, we ask | :10:12. | :10:15.
you to enlighten and inspire the initiatives that promote peace in | :10:16. | :10:18.
Ukraine so that all those involved, with the support of the | :10:19. | :10:20.
international community, will make every effort to prevent violence | :10:21. | :10:23.
and, in a spirit of unity and dialogue, chart a path for the | :10:24. | :10:48.
country's future. Lord, we pray to you for all the peoples of the | :10:49. | :10:57.
earth. You who have conquered death, grant us your life. Grant us your | :10:58. | :11:02.
peace. And now to the Easter blessing. The | :11:03. | :11:54.
Cardinal Beacon announces that those who receive this blessing here in | :11:55. | :11:58.
the square, by radio and television are granted a plenary indulgence | :11:59. | :12:01.
from the Catholic's teaching. And again now, the Pope, in his own | :12:02. | :12:44.
words, . Through the prayers and merit of the Blessed Mary, the | :12:45. | :12:51.
Virgin and Blessed Michael, the Archangel, the Blessed John the | :12:52. | :12:55.
Baptist and the holy Apostles Peter and Paul and of all the saints. May | :12:56. | :13:05.
Almighty God have mercy on you and with your sins forgiven. May Jesus | :13:06. | :13:11.
Christ grant everlasting life. Maybe Almighty and merciful Lord grant you | :13:12. | :13:15.
indulgence, absolution and remission of all your sins. And always | :13:16. | :13:23.
repentant heart, the grace and consolation of the holy spirit and | :13:24. | :13:42.
final perseverance in good works. Amen. | :13:43. | :13:55.
And now, everyone in this huge crowd in the square and beyond are | :13:56. | :14:03.
applauding the 10th two after we had -- they are applauding the Pope | :14:04. | :14:06.
after we heard his Easter message. Everyone is looking at the balcony, | :14:07. | :14:08.
some shouting up. Now the Pope, reading his greeting | :14:09. | :14:23.
to the people. Dear brothers and sisters, once again my wishes of | :14:24. | :14:26.
happy Easter to all of you who have come to the square from all over the | :14:27. | :14:30.
world. I extend Easter wishes to those from various countries | :14:31. | :14:33.
following us through social and other media. I grant your families | :14:34. | :14:40.
and communities the happy announcement that Christ, our peace | :14:41. | :14:46.
and our hope, is risen. Thank you for your presence, for your prayer | :14:47. | :14:57.
and for your testimony of faith. And a special thank you, the Pope says, | :14:58. | :15:02.
for the gift of the beautiful flowers from the Netherlands. And | :15:03. | :15:15.
again, as the Pope says to everybody, happy Easter, applause | :15:16. | :15:21.
rakes out, an eruption of applause right across this vast crowd. The | :15:22. | :15:40.
Pope is still standing on the balcony. His Easter message, then, | :15:41. | :15:45.
very consistent with the priorities of his first year in office, a | :15:46. | :15:49.
church in keeping with his choice of the name Francis for his papacy. | :15:50. | :15:54.
Identify blue, the Church of the poor and marginalised and with his | :15:55. | :15:59.
challenges to what he sees as the skewed priorities of the world. The | :16:00. | :16:02.
first specific concern he highlighted in the address, the | :16:03. | :16:06.
current and deadly Ebola epidemic in West Africa, the first time it | :16:07. | :16:10.
current and deadly Ebola epidemic in appeared in the region. Health | :16:11. | :16:11.
workers are placing themselves at high risk as they battle to contain | :16:12. | :16:17.
the disease. He has highlighted kidnappings, both of priests and lay | :16:18. | :16:22.
people as acknowledgement that the separation from their families is | :16:23. | :16:26.
felt particularly acutely at the time at Easter. His concern for | :16:27. | :16:29.
migrants hoping for a better and more dignified life . His first trip | :16:30. | :16:34.
outside Rome was to the Italian island of Lampedusa in the | :16:35. | :16:37.
Mediterranean, which has received so many migrants making the perilous | :16:38. | :16:41.
passage from North Africa. And the conflicts he drew attention to in | :16:42. | :16:46.
the message. Syria again, of course, with the call for access to | :16:47. | :16:50.
humanitarian aid and an end to the deadly use of force against | :16:51. | :16:54.
civilians. The Pope is still being applauded as he now turns to leave | :16:55. | :16:57.
the balcony. Among the other countries in his message, not | :16:58. | :17:00.
surprisingly Ukraine, the Pope urging support for the peace | :17:01. | :17:06.
initiatives and dialogue. And environmental concern as well. He | :17:07. | :17:09.
spoke of the scourge of hunger and the immense wastefulness for which | :17:10. | :17:25.
we are often was possible. The Pope clearly sees it as very important to | :17:26. | :17:30.
engage with people, and in doing so is non-judgemental. He wants to be | :17:31. | :17:37.
seen, above all, as a servant. As Rome celebrates Easter Day, the | :17:38. | :17:46.
Church is already declaring -- preparing for the declarations next | :17:47. | :18:01.
weekend. Pope John XXIII. It will be an historic double canonisation, | :18:02. | :18:05.
hundreds of thousands of people are expected for the ceremony. But for | :18:06. | :18:13.
now, as this Easter Mass draws to its conclusion, in a packed and very | :18:14. | :18:19.
sunny St Peter's Square, we say goodbye and a happy Easter. | :18:20. | :18:22. |
