CHEERING AND APPLAUSE It's July the 27th in exactly 12

:00:16.:00:21.

months today, the eyes of the world will be on London. So let's

:00:21.:00:25.

celebrate the fact that for the first time in over 60 years, the

:00:25.:00:29.

Olympic Games is returning to British soil, and after tonight,

:00:29.:00:39.
:00:39.:00:48.

The Games of the 30th Olympiad are awarded to London.

:00:48.:00:58.
:00:58.:01:18.

CHEERING AND APPLAUSE Good evening, and welcome to a very

:01:18.:01:21.

special event to celebrate a landmark occasion. We are live with

:01:21.:01:26.

a few friends of ours in Trafalgar Square in the heart of central

:01:26.:01:32.

London. This is where thousands of people came back in 2005 to

:01:32.:01:36.

celebrate when London won its bid to host the Olympics. So we thought

:01:36.:01:40.

it would be a good idea to return six years later, and tonight all

:01:40.:01:44.

eyes will be on that countdown clock in the middle of Trafalgar

:01:44.:01:49.

Square as it ticks past the very second that signifies there is just

:01:49.:01:52.

a year until the Olympic Games. there are millions of people around

:01:52.:01:57.

the world watching us live tonight from Sydney to Rio, Beijing to

:01:57.:02:01.

Athens. It's lovely to share the event with all of you. Also,

:02:01.:02:04.

tonight is incredibly significant because this evening on this very

:02:04.:02:08.

stage, the President of the IOC, Jacques Rogge, will invite the

:02:08.:02:12.

athletes from around the world to come to this city to compete for an

:02:12.:02:16.

Olympic medal. We're going to see for the first time Olympic's 2012

:02:16.:02:20.

Olympic medals. The Princess Royal will be here to unveil them. It's a

:02:20.:02:23.

big night indeed, but it's only right we share this evening with

:02:23.:02:26.

the Olympic Park, which as you can see now, is about five miles in

:02:27.:02:30.

that direction. Now, remarkably, Sophie, it took them a full two

:02:30.:02:34.

weeks to fill the Olympic pool, but it's full. It's ready for action

:02:34.:02:38.

and tonight will host its first race, but we're not expecting any

:02:38.:02:41.

Olympic records. No. It's going to be interesting. But doesn't it look

:02:41.:02:45.

fantastic? There it is, the Aquatics Centre. Let's go straight

:02:45.:02:52.

to the diving pool. And there is only one man I can think of who

:02:52.:02:54.

should Kristen that. Mishal Hussain is there with him now.

:02:54.:03:03.

CHEERING AND APPLAUSE If you know anything at all about

:03:03.:03:07.

British diving, you will guess what is coming next. Welcome to the

:03:07.:03:11.

Aquatics Centre, a state-of-the-art facility just completed, and with

:03:11.:03:16.

me here is one of Britain's big medal hopes for 2012, Tom Daley.

:03:16.:03:24.

CHEERING AND APPLAUSE Lots and lots of support for you,

:03:25.:03:28.

Tom, not surprisingly, here tonight. You have a look around the Aquatics

:03:28.:03:31.

Centre. What do you think of what you've seen? Well, the pool just

:03:31.:03:35.

looks absolutely incredible, and to think of what it's going to be like

:03:35.:03:39.

in a year's time - these gries making a lot of noise, and to think

:03:39.:03:43.

what it's going to be like when it's packed out - probably going to

:03:43.:03:47.

need new ears by the time the next year comes around. Does it feel

:03:47.:03:51.

different preparing for an Olympics on home turf? Yeah, well, every

:03:51.:03:56.

athlete's dream is to compete at an Olympic Games, and to get the

:03:56.:03:59.

opportunity to compete in front of a home crowd never comes around

:03:59.:04:02.

very often, so it's going to be completely different to the last

:04:02.:04:05.

Olympic, because you're going to have the home crowd support. I am

:04:05.:04:08.

sure everyone here is going to get behind all the athletes and divers

:04:08.:04:12.

in Great Britain. And you get to be the very first person to perform

:04:12.:04:16.

the first official dive into this Olympic diving pool. How does that

:04:16.:04:21.

feel? Yeah. I'm quite nervous and excited at the same time because

:04:21.:04:25.

it's going to be the first dive and yeah, I'm going to go out there,

:04:25.:04:30.

give it my best shot. Hopefully it will be a good dive. Which will we

:04:30.:04:34.

see? A somersault Pike, which is one of the dives I'll be using in

:04:34.:04:38.

the Olympics in the sinkro competition with my partner. We're

:04:38.:04:43.

with you all the way. The platforms are ready. Good luck. Tom Daley.

:04:43.:04:48.

CHEERING AND APPLAUSE And to talk us through what Tom is

:04:48.:04:53.

going to do, over now to the former British Olympic diving silver

:04:53.:04:58.

medallist Leon Taylor. OK. Here goes Tom. What an honour

:04:58.:05:03.

this is. Look how shiny those bars are. Everyone has been out today

:05:03.:05:08.

polishing away. This pool is brand spanking new, and what an honour

:05:08.:05:18.
:05:18.:05:21.

for Tom Daley to kris christen it. You can hear the crowd here in this

:05:21.:05:26.

Aquatics Centre. It's almost like a helicopter diving pad, the board is

:05:26.:05:31.

helicopter diving pad, the board is so big. Look how amazing this pool

:05:31.:05:41.
:05:41.:05:46.

background. Four, three, two, one. And as you would expect from Tom

:05:46.:05:55.

Daley, just back from Shanghai, chistens the Olympic pool with that

:05:55.:06:01.

dive. He swims to the side there. What an amazing occasion. Let's

:06:01.:06:08.

have another look at the dive, the first dive at the 2012 Aquatics

:06:08.:06:15.

Centre, an inward somersault pike. The pool is something else. As Tom

:06:15.:06:21.

was saying, he's so excited to dive here in just a year's time. Super

:06:21.:06:25.

slow motion as he goes into the water there without a splash. What

:06:25.:06:28.

a fitting opening to the first dive of the Aquatics Centre. Tom,

:06:28.:06:32.

congratulations. It looked fantastic to me. How does the

:06:32.:06:37.

diving pool feel? It was great. It was a little bit cold getting in

:06:37.:06:40.

initially, but yeah, it's great to think that that's what it's going

:06:40.:06:44.

to be like next year - it's just incredible. The atmosphere then was

:06:44.:06:47.

great, the amount of cheers and stuff. So it's going to be awesome

:06:47.:06:52.

next year. You said that particular dive is one we'll see more of next

:06:52.:06:58.

year? Yes, one in the synchronised competition I'll hopefully qualify

:06:58.:07:01.

for. You'll have to look out for that one. What's the next year

:07:01.:07:05.

going to be like for you? Quite busy. I have my A-Levels. I've got

:07:05.:07:09.

obviously lots of training to do as well. I've just got to keep

:07:09.:07:13.

training, keep focusing on the job at hand, and hopefully the whole

:07:13.:07:17.

country will be supporting the GB athletes into it. People are

:07:17.:07:20.

intrigued because you're only 17. How do you manage to combine

:07:20.:07:23.

training at this level with your school work? It is quite difficult

:07:23.:07:27.

to combine the two at the same time, but you just have to manage your

:07:27.:07:30.

time as well as you possibly can, be, like, strict with yourself and

:07:31.:07:34.

make sure that you're constantly training as hard as you can,

:07:34.:07:37.

working as hard as you can and making sure that all the support

:07:37.:07:41.

systems around you, like your family, your friends and all the

:07:41.:07:44.

people from British diving, that they're supporting you constantly.

:07:44.:07:48.

Tom, thank you so much for doing that first official dive. Good luck

:07:49.:07:52.

for next year and for the Games themselves. Tom Daley.

:07:52.:08:02.
:08:02.:08:07.

CHEERING AND APPLAUSE So the diving pool has officially

:08:07.:08:12.

been christened. We'll have more from you from the Aquatics Centre

:08:12.:08:16.

where we'll be putting the pool to the test with help from some

:08:17.:08:19.

familiar faces. Thank you very much indeed. You enjoyed that here in

:08:19.:08:22.

Trafalgar Square, didn't you? That was a special moment and a special

:08:22.:08:27.

moment for Tom as well. Something tells me he might be raising the

:08:27.:08:30.

famous roof of that place in 12 months' time. A very special moment

:08:30.:08:34.

has arrived. It's time to invite the athletes to come to London to

:08:34.:08:39.

compete in the Olympic Games in 12 months' time. So please welcome to

:08:40.:08:42.

the stage delegates from the International Olympic Committee

:08:42.:08:52.
:08:52.:09:08.

along with the Prime Minister, From the host nations past, present

:09:08.:09:14.

and future - leading the way, Greece, the birthplace of the

:09:14.:09:19.

Olympic Games, and joining these representatives on stage, gymnasts

:09:19.:09:25.

from Bromley Valley Gymnastics Centre in London, the youngest,

:09:25.:09:30.

just seven years old. Brazil - they'll host the 2018 summer

:09:30.:09:35.

Olympics. China is here too. They staged the last Olympics in Beijing,

:09:35.:09:40.

of course, in 2008. CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

:09:40.:09:45.

And the Winter Olympics represented as well. South Korea - they'll host

:09:45.:09:50.

the 2018 Winter Olympics and Russia as well, hosting the 2014 Winter

:09:50.:09:56.

Olympics. CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

:09:56.:10:01.

And following them on to the stage, we have the President of the

:10:01.:10:04.

International Olympic Committee, Jacques Rogge, who is here to

:10:04.:10:09.

invite the youth of the world to take part in the Olympic Games, and

:10:09.:10:13.

Lord Coe there, who has driven London's Games so passionately

:10:13.:10:16.

almost from the start, the Princess Royal and, of course, the Prime

:10:16.:10:24.

Minister, David Cameron. It gives me huge pleasure to

:10:24.:10:29.

welcome everyone here in Trafalgar Square. This is a great night for

:10:29.:10:34.

London, a great night for Britain. It was six years ago in this Square

:10:34.:10:40.

that we heard the news that Britain would have the opportunity to host

:10:40.:10:45.

the Olympic Games, and six years on, with just one year to go, the sense

:10:45.:10:49.

of excitement is even greater today than it was then, and I think this

:10:49.:10:56.

has the makings of a great British success story. With a year to go,

:10:56.:11:01.

it's on time. It's on budget. The great stadium is finished. The

:11:01.:11:04.

Aquatics Centre is finished. The Velodrome is finished, and I

:11:04.:11:08.

believe this can be a great advertisement for our country, and

:11:08.:11:13.

we must remember what London 2012 is all about. It's about great

:11:13.:11:18.

sport with great British athletes like Tom Daley and Chris Hoy taking

:11:18.:11:22.

part. It's about a great legacy, not just sport for a few weeks, but

:11:22.:11:28.

a sporting legacy for all our country for many, many years, and

:11:28.:11:31.

it's about Great Britain letting the whole world see all that is

:11:31.:11:36.

great about our country, our history, our present, our future,

:11:36.:11:40.

the brilliance of our arts, the depth of our culture, the fantastic

:11:40.:11:48.

success of our business, so we must offer the greatest ever Games in

:11:48.:11:51.

the world's greatest country. CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

:11:51.:11:56.

And with that - APPLAUSE

:11:56.:12:01.

And with that, will you give a great, warm London welcome to the

:12:01.:12:04.

President of the International Olympic Committee, Jacques Rogge.

:12:04.:12:14.
:12:14.:12:23.

Good evening. On 6th, July 2005, a dream was born when the

:12:23.:12:32.

International Olympic Committee awarded the 2012 Games to London.

:12:32.:12:39.

The world's finest athletes began dreaming of competing in this

:12:39.:12:45.

magnificent city in packed state- of-the-art venues and in front of

:12:45.:12:49.

passionate crowds, as in 1908 and 1948, they knew they would be

:12:49.:12:54.

coming to the nation that invented modern sport and the concept of

:12:54.:13:02.

fair play. Today, their dreams come closer as we invite 202 National

:13:02.:13:07.

Olympic Committees to the 2012 Games. The athletes will be ready,

:13:07.:13:14.

and so will London. For this, the International Olympic Committee

:13:14.:13:19.

thanks the very supportive public authorities, the great Locog team

:13:19.:13:23.

under the leadership of Lord Coe and the British public for its

:13:23.:13:30.

enthusiasm. APPLAUSE

:13:30.:13:39.

I now according to tradition - I invite the athletes of the world to

:13:39.:13:43.

participate in the Games of the 30th Olympiad in London one year

:13:43.:13:53.
:13:53.:14:02.

from today. Good luck, London. And now, the President of the IOC

:14:02.:14:07.

will ask the representatives of the six national Olympic Committees

:14:07.:14:14.

represented here today to accept this invitation on behalf of their

:14:14.:14:24.
:14:24.:14:28.

country's athletes. Accepting on behalf of the Hellenic

:14:28.:14:37.

Olympic Committee, Cpyros Kapelos. On behalf of the Brazilian Olympic

:14:37.:14:46.

Committee, Carlos Nuzman. APPLAUSE

:14:46.:14:52.

On behalf of the Chinese Olympic Committee, Yu Peng.

:14:52.:15:01.

CHEERING AND APPLAUSE On behalf of the Korean Olympic

:15:01.:15:08.

Committee, Yang Chung Park. CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

:15:08.:15:16.

On behalf of the Russian Olympic Committee, Ahmed Villalov.

:15:16.:15:23.

CHEERING AND APPLAUSE On behalf of the British Olympic

:15:23.:15:33.
:15:33.:15:43.

We wish all the athletes good luck when they prepare for London 2012,

:15:43.:15:48.

and look forward to seeing them here in one year's time.

:15:48.:15:58.
:15:58.:15:58.

Apology for the loss of subtitles for 87 seconds

:15:58.:17:25.

And # London calling. To the Now, as The Feeling get ready to

:17:25.:17:29.

perform to this huge crowd in Trafalgar Square, a glimpse of the

:17:29.:17:36.

people down below, enjoying this wonderful moment, as London

:17:36.:17:41.

countdown to the 2012 Olympics. Importantly, we've now reached the

:17:41.:17:45.

stage where Jacques Rogge has invited the world's athletes to now

:17:45.:17:50.

come to London. You saw the celebrations, now it is time to

:17:50.:18:00.
:18:00.:18:11.

# I. # I wish I could swim.

:18:11.:18:16.

# Like the dolphins. # Like dolphins can swim.

:18:16.:18:26.
:18:26.:18:36.

# and nothing. We are joined by Chris Tomlinson,

:18:36.:18:43.

who competed in Beijing 2008. Next up, Martin Barnard, Britain's

:18:43.:18:53.
:18:53.:18:55.

number one high jumper, and there Andy Tennant, the track and road

:18:55.:19:05.
:19:05.:19:06.

cyclist, who won a silver and bronze in a team pursuit.

:19:06.:19:10.

We are also joined this evening by Andy Turner, Christian Malcolm, Sam

:19:10.:19:19.

Oldham, Beth Tweddle and Ben Kelly Holmes, who won two gold medals an

:19:19.:19:27.

incredible seven years ago at the # We can beat them.

:19:27.:19:34.

# For ever and ever. # Oh we can be heroes.

:19:34.:19:44.
:19:44.:19:49.

# Just for one day. Sing it with me, come on London!

:19:49.:19:54.

# We can be heroes, just for one day.

:19:55.:20:03.

# Let me hear you. We can be heroes. # Just for one day.

:20:03.:20:13.
:20:13.:20:36.

# We can be heroes. A huge thank you to The Feeling and

:20:37.:20:41.

the DJ, Kissy Sell Out, and wonderful to see so many of our

:20:41.:20:45.

artists -- athletes here in Trafalgar Square. Welcome to the

:20:45.:20:49.

celebrations. 12 months ago, this man was cycling

:20:49.:20:53.

around the Velodrome on the Olympic Park with Sir Chris Hoy. Nothing as

:20:53.:20:57.

strenuous this evening but something equally as important.

:20:57.:21:07.
:21:07.:21:11.

Please welcome, the Mayor of London, # London Calling.

:21:11.:21:21.
:21:21.:21:22.

Your Royal Highness, Mr President, ladies and gentlemen, we have a new

:21:22.:21:26.

monument in this city to the indomitability of London. A symbol

:21:26.:21:31.

of resilience, to go with Nelson's Column, or the dome of St Paul's

:21:31.:21:36.

rising above the smoke of the Blitz. My friends, I give you the Olympic

:21:36.:21:46.

No sooner had this masterpiece of the Swiss art been installed than

:21:46.:21:52.

it unexpectedly packed up. But with the help of various Swiss

:21:52.:21:57.

chronometer us, we got it going again. And then it was attacked by

:21:57.:22:01.

a horde of wooded crusties protesting at something or other,

:22:01.:22:08.

and still that clock ticks on, to remind its that nothing, and no one,

:22:08.:22:14.

is going to stop us in our work of preparing London for the greatest

:22:14.:22:20.

event that has taken place in this city in the last 50 years. Mr

:22:20.:22:28.

President Jacques Rogge, the streets will be ready, won't they?

:22:28.:22:31.

The trains will be ready, the taxes will be ready, the theatres will be

:22:31.:22:37.

ready, the buses will be ready, complete with the new upon, hop off

:22:37.:22:44.

feature. The hotels will be ready, the bicycles will be ready, the

:22:44.:22:50.

Olympic venues are already so ready, that we might as well call a snap

:22:50.:22:54.

Olympics tomorrow and catch the rest of the world napping. And

:22:54.:22:57.

above all, the people of London will be ready.

:22:57.:23:06.

To welcome the world's finest athletes to the greatest games that

:23:07.:23:14.

have ever been held, in the greatest city on earth. See you in

:23:14.:23:24.
:23:24.:23:26.

Boris, thank you. We can take it from that that London will most

:23:26.:23:30.

definitely be ready. That ends the formal part of the evening, but it

:23:30.:23:35.

doesn't mean we are finished. There is plenty to come. We are going to

:23:35.:23:40.

see very shortly for the first time, those medals, the London 2012

:23:40.:23:44.

Olympic medals that so many of these athletes will be desperate to

:23:44.:23:48.

get their hands on next year. first, let's go back to the Olympic

:23:48.:23:58.
:23:58.:24:05.

Park. It is time again to make some Aquatics Centre. We are going to

:24:05.:24:10.

celebrate one year to go, with the very first competitive race ever to

:24:10.:24:15.

take place in the Olympic pool. Who better to take part than those who

:24:15.:24:19.

know exactly what it is like to compete for Britain at an Olympic

:24:19.:24:25.

double? To introduce our swimmers, over to Britain's Sydney 2000

:24:25.:24:29.

triple-jump gold medallist, Jonathan Edwards. Thank you. This

:24:29.:24:35.

venue is going to see some amazing races in a year time. I don't think

:24:35.:24:38.

it is going to see anything quite like what we are about to witness.

:24:38.:24:42.

Some of our greatest Olympians, in a way you have never seen them

:24:42.:24:46.

before. I have the starters hooter to begin the race, let me introduce

:24:46.:24:56.
:24:56.:24:57.

you are going to see. In lane one, please welcome, Roger Black.

:24:57.:25:07.
:25:07.:25:07.

Apology for the loss of subtitles for 87 seconds

:25:07.:26:42.

next lane. not as good as we saw from Tom

:26:42.:26:45.

Daley. Jamie Baulch at the top of the screen is keeping up with Mark

:26:45.:26:50.

Foster. That is the underwater shot of Mark Foster. Let's see what is

:26:50.:26:56.

happening, Duncan Goodhew swimming breaststroke. We have a battle for

:26:56.:27:01.

second. Roger Black, Steve Backley, Jamie Baulch in a line. Who is

:27:01.:27:06.

going to get it? We need a photo- finish, who knows who came in

:27:06.:27:11.

second? The rest of the swimmers come in, what an occasion. There is

:27:11.:27:14.

no one in lane eight at the moment, Tessa Sanderson is only halfway

:27:14.:27:21.

down the poor. The crowd are loving it, there she is. The crowd are on

:27:21.:27:27.

their feet. She is almost there. The rest of the athletes are

:27:27.:27:34.

hauling themselves out, Tessa is still stroking away. Famous for

:27:34.:27:37.

throwing beat javelin, not for the breaststroke, but that will change

:27:37.:27:44.
