Eilidh Child looking good so far. As smooth as you like. Jessica Judd

:00:54.:01:05.

takes on Lynsey Sharp. There will be two Britons in the final. I am so

:01:06.:01:12.

pressed with this young lady, she is the real deal. It will be tight for

:01:13.:01:20.

second place, Williams just gets into second. Jodie Williams is

:01:21.:01:31.

clear. This is the grin again, Adam Gemili running well. It is a great

:01:32.:01:35.

feeling. Will Sharman clatters a hurdle. Will

:01:36.:01:57.

Sharman, silver medal. I just told myself, just one last effort.

:01:58.:02:06.

STUDIO: I really hope the weather is nice way you are because here it is

:02:07.:02:15.

raining. We started Glasgow and the Commonwealth Games in beautiful

:02:16.:02:18.

sunshine and it has not been quite like that in Zurich. Cooly, he has

:02:19.:02:28.

got a cagoule on. That tells me he is not a proper cow! That is my

:02:29.:02:34.

conclusion! Lada would you agree with that Denise? He is a crazy

:02:35.:02:44.

cow! But I don't think he is real! But he has got some skills. We saw

:02:45.:02:50.

some brilliant skills in the hurdles and the 200 metres last night.

:02:51.:02:58.

Those 200 metres, both the men and women, very good. Adam Gemili looked

:02:59.:03:05.

particularly impressive last night. He seemed to just post. He made it

:03:06.:03:16.

look easy. -- he seemed to coast. It really is between him and limit true

:03:17.:03:26.

-- Lemaitre. That French -British fight. And the women. Really super.

:03:27.:03:46.

And the hurdles, Colin? Will Sharman has got two silver medals. He has

:03:47.:03:51.

also got a lifetime best out of here in Z?rich. But he may reflect in the

:03:52.:03:57.

future, think, there was a chance for me to become a champion twice.

:03:58.:04:04.

We would love for you to get in touch. Andy Turner is coming in

:04:05.:04:10.

later. He announced his retirement for these championships. We have the

:04:11.:04:17.

steeplechase as well. The stripping Frenchman has been disqualified,

:04:18.:04:25.

what did you think of that? We also have the 1500 metres for women. What

:04:26.:04:29.

about this morning, this is what is coming up.

:04:30.:04:37.

Morgan Lake is just doing the high jump, she is the world junior

:04:38.:04:49.

champion. Men's 1500 metres. It is just two heats. Chris O'Hare and

:04:50.:04:53.

Charlie Grice running for Britain. Let's take a look at Morgan Lake out

:04:54.:05:36.

there, I am sure she is not enjoying these conditions but the rain has

:05:37.:05:41.

stopped. It really is not ideal conditions at all.

:05:42.:05:50.

Final of the men's 110-metre hurdles.

:05:51.:06:11.

Will Sharman, so close to the silver medal. With Martinot-Lagarde. The

:06:12.:06:20.

barrier, the mistake, the clattering of the hurdles. It has cost Will

:06:21.:06:24.

Sharman and that is painful to take, he was out in front and the

:06:25.:06:28.

gold medal was calling and he has been denied. It is instead the

:06:29.:06:34.

defending champion. You clattered a couple of hurdles? I

:06:35.:06:47.

kind of got away when I slapped it with the league leg -- lead leg but

:06:48.:06:57.

I didn't really. Mixed emotions. Because I knew I was in the lead. I

:06:58.:07:06.

knew where it Shubenkov is good and I did not expect to be in the lead

:07:07.:07:13.

but I dominated from the start, which is why I was gutted because I

:07:14.:07:20.

could have done more. But going into this, I was bronze medal hopeful

:07:21.:07:26.

with Pascal being the favourite. Shubenkov being the second

:07:27.:07:29.

favourite. At the good thing is that my coach, we have been working on

:07:30.:07:41.

increasing my absolute time so if I do make a mistake in the final, I

:07:42.:07:44.

can still come away with the medals and that has happened today. A new

:07:45.:07:50.

personal best, you are getting better year by year. I think there

:07:51.:07:56.

is still more to come. As we can see by that final. Going on the start

:07:57.:08:02.

line, I was quite tired having run a personal best not long before. I

:08:03.:08:07.

just kept saying to myself, just one last effort, one last effort. When

:08:08.:08:12.

your body is quite drained, the chips are down, when you have to

:08:13.:08:15.

produce your best result, and I almost did. Silver medal for Will

:08:16.:08:22.

Sharman but was it a missed opportunity? We talked about body

:08:23.:08:25.

language of athletes when they come off. He talked about a missed

:08:26.:08:32.

opportunity but I am not sure he was massively disappointed in the way he

:08:33.:08:36.

was in the Commonwealth Games. Perhaps because he felt they were

:08:37.:08:39.

better men out there. With proven championship records. I think he

:08:40.:08:44.

should be disappointed because maybe in his analysis just after, he said

:08:45.:08:55.

he was aware that... He looked at the guys and at their form and he

:08:56.:09:00.

knew that he had to do his thing. I think he should have focused on his

:09:01.:09:06.

own lane and his own race and I think he could have won that. The

:09:07.:09:10.

harsh reality is that two finals in a row, he has made mistakes which

:09:11.:09:16.

have cost him. They have cost him the title, not just places. That

:09:17.:09:22.

will be the most frustrating thing. He went to brand-new territory here.

:09:23.:09:29.

He went to 13.2 for the first time. The hurdles will be coming at him

:09:30.:09:33.

much quicker than he has been used to in the past. I can understand why

:09:34.:09:37.

you make those critical mistakes when it matters. But then you have

:09:38.:09:42.

to say, am I here to run quickly or am I here to win titles and win

:09:43.:09:47.

medals? You have to take your foot off the gas a little bit to play it

:09:48.:09:57.

safe and get those medals. Pascal Martinot-Lagarde did not do that. He

:09:58.:10:03.

has made those mistakes before. Will Sharman knows where he is strong and

:10:04.:10:06.

he made a mistake at the Commonwealth Games and he would be

:10:07.:10:10.

did it here at the European Championships. In your own mind, you

:10:11.:10:14.

have to think yourself, what am I doing and what do I need to do?

:10:15.:10:18.

Sometimes you have to play it safe to get hardware. Because

:10:19.:10:24.

Martinot-Lagarde was such a clear favourite, Will Sharman is thinking,

:10:25.:10:29.

I have not got the luxury of playing it safe. But he still did not run

:10:30.:10:34.

his own race and you have to do that. It is a technical event. You

:10:35.:10:43.

have to weigh it up when you come to a Championships and make a decision,

:10:44.:10:48.

how will you take on this race. Plenty of times in the season to run

:10:49.:10:52.

quickly, I am just saying that Will Sharman will be quite frustrated

:10:53.:10:56.

with this because he can win those medals and he can win the title. But

:10:57.:11:01.

you cannot alter your speed in the race. There is a fine line between

:11:02.:11:11.

racing, being competitive, there are eight people, but you almost have to

:11:12.:11:15.

have tunnel vision in that lane. The moment your attention starts to

:11:16.:11:20.

drift to your periphery and the people on the outside or inside of

:11:21.:11:24.

you, that is when you make mistakes. I don't think you have time to make

:11:25.:11:28.

those adjustments, I am going to quickly,

:11:29.:12:04.

had to do was get with him. If Will Sharman had kept his calm I am sure

:12:05.:12:06.

he could have glided past him because he is a far better

:12:07.:12:09.

technician at the back end of the race. You are a world record-holder

:12:10.:12:15.

and multiple world champion, you must have had the confidence of

:12:16.:12:20.

knowing what you needed to do. You sense that Will is still trying to

:12:21.:12:25.

find his way and become a champion. I think you are right. He is clearly

:12:26.:12:32.

in the best shape of his life. And I just think maybe he gave

:12:33.:12:37.

Martinot-Lagarde a bit too much respect. But you need a clean race

:12:38.:12:43.

and you have to give yourself a chance to run quick in the final and

:12:44.:12:47.

Shubenkov was the only one who did that. He hardly hit a barrier. If

:12:48.:12:52.

you have that kind of clean race, that is when you will win medals.

:12:53.:12:57.

Wright take a look at the head and shot and see what happened. Not

:12:58.:13:04.

least, Bascou in Lane 7 who ended up getting disqualified. Nobody was

:13:05.:13:10.

even putting him in the mix for the medals. Crashed into that barrier

:13:11.:13:19.

and he ended up throwing himself over to the other side of the lane

:13:20.:13:27.

towards the runner next them. I think it is a little bit harsh he

:13:28.:13:30.

has got disqualified because it happens on many occasions.

:13:31.:13:38.

I think there was a little bit of a harsh disqualification. What about

:13:39.:13:46.

Pascal Martinot-Lagarde? He looked so good in the semifinals, may be

:13:47.:13:52.

cocky and a little complacent, what do you make of it, a lack of bottle?

:13:53.:13:56.

Yellow muck Colin could be right, searching for that quick time. When

:13:57.:14:05.

you have not got a medal, just get a medal. Rely on your technique and

:14:06.:14:11.

trust in it and he did not do that. He started pushing. He hit hurdles.

:14:12.:14:15.

It was his messiest grace of the season. You are right.

:14:16.:14:25.

This highly hurdles field is one of the best in the world. There are

:14:26.:14:31.

only perhaps two athletes that are missing who can run consistently

:14:32.:14:36.

fast as this field. Now you have to put Will in the real world as well

:14:37.:14:39.

and he is one of the best high hurdle is in the world and he

:14:40.:14:43.

demonstrated that yesterday. Even though he made a couple of mistakes,

:14:44.:14:47.

he still picked up the hardware. We are not being too critical, people

:14:48.:14:52.

may be thinking we are being too critical, but he will definitely

:14:53.:14:55.

improve and we hope next year he will learn from this. This clearly

:14:56.:15:00.

highlights what pressure does to an athlete. You can be in great shape

:15:01.:15:06.

like Martinot-Lagarde, and he has run quick, but adding expectations,

:15:07.:15:10.

the French are just the same as we are and we expect our athletes to do

:15:11.:15:13.

well, especially when they are demonstrating good times, we expect

:15:14.:15:18.

them to win medals. We have mentioned Morgan Lake, let's hear a

:15:19.:15:21.

little bit more from this young superstar. Congratulations on your

:15:22.:15:34.

achievement. You could have gone to the Commonwealth, but you targeted

:15:35.:15:39.

that instead. I think I made the right decision. I wanted that

:15:40.:15:45.

experience of being against people more my level and fighting against

:15:46.:15:52.

people my age. This bit in Zurich is the next stepping

:15:53.:15:53.

people my age. This bit in Zurich is the stone for you. Is that how you

:15:54.:16:00.

perceive it? Yes, my first senior competition, a big stepping stone in

:16:01.:16:01.

my career. perceive it? Yes, my first senior

:16:02.:16:09.

competition, a big stepping This is an individual event, an event that

:16:10.:16:14.

you excel at, the high jump. What is your thought on that? There will be

:16:15.:16:21.

shorter sessions of preparation in the build-up to the event but it

:16:22.:16:24.

will be quite exciting to focus on that. The rain has stopped, Morgan

:16:25.:16:33.

Lake has got her foot off, and she will be looking for qualification in

:16:34.:16:40.

the high jump. The world junior champion in two events, it has been

:16:41.:16:44.

quite a season for her. Quite a season already, and I am sure she

:16:45.:16:48.

has been enjoying it. She was delighted with both of those gold

:16:49.:16:53.

medals. It gives you the confidence that things are going in the right

:16:54.:16:56.

direction, that your training is good. And she has wonderful support

:16:57.:17:01.

from her family. Her father used to be a Choupo jumper so he -- Pro used

:17:02.:17:13.

to be a jumper so... All of the girls are older than she is, but

:17:14.:17:18.

this is one of her stronger event, and she needs that 194 to

:17:19.:17:22.

automatically qualify this morning, and I hope she goes out and enjoys

:17:23.:17:29.

it and learns from this experience. It was her decision to focus on this

:17:30.:17:37.

event and you endorsed the decision? Yes. I think athletes of a certain

:17:38.:17:43.

age should do these championships. It is right to compete against

:17:44.:17:48.

similar athletes, but if you can step up into this arena, take that

:17:49.:17:53.

opportunity. It will stand you in good stead as you progress. Looking

:17:54.:18:00.

across all of her event, the high jump is a strength, but where else

:18:01.:18:04.

would you analyse her strengths and weaknesses? There is her growth and

:18:05.:18:10.

strength which it needs to be in proof. She is only 17 associate has

:18:11.:18:15.

a long way to go and develop. Her general speed concerns me. We have

:18:16.:18:21.

seen athletes attack in a complete different way. We have seen just as

:18:22.:18:28.

has great speed -- Jessica, who has great speed, and Martin will have to

:18:29.:18:33.

work more on her long jump -- and Morgan Lake will have to work on her

:18:34.:18:38.

long jump, because I don't think she gets the same kind of speed that

:18:39.:18:44.

Jessica does. One of the things that hurdles can do, it can't force your

:18:45.:18:49.

speed, so she can get some kind of improvement there. -- it can enforce

:18:50.:19:03.

your speed. She did not do too badly. So we will see. Let's go out

:19:04.:19:06.

and see how she is getting on. A gloomy day here in Zurich, but

:19:07.:19:17.

possibly the brightest ray of sunshine on the British team, Morgan

:19:18.:19:23.

Lake. She goes clear. Soaking wet. It was Proper rain during the

:19:24.:19:31.

warm-up. The stuff that gets you really wet. The athletes cowered

:19:32.:19:35.

under the shelters, and Morgan Lake, a good start. That was her

:19:36.:19:46.

pass, 170 -- 1.70. The other end of the Stadium, should when it's of

:19:47.:19:58.

Germany. One of only 16 athletes and disqualification. 12 from 16, on the

:19:59.:20:07.

illuminating four. Quite unusual -- only eliminating four. Always throws

:20:08.:20:20.

down the right-hand side. I think that is a nod of approval. Way

:20:21.:20:26.

beyond qualifying for the finals on Sunday. Another qualification and

:20:27.:20:37.

process of the moment is the discus. 57.50. That is way beyond

:20:38.:20:43.

qualifying. Quite a little qualification and given the standard

:20:44.:20:47.

of all the athletes here. 22 athletes in the women's discus.

:20:48.:20:55.

Silver medallist from last year, making qualifying looking -- look

:20:56.:21:01.

very easy. She has matters of right in contention for sure. She can go

:21:02.:21:09.

away and prepare for that final. A bit of a confidence boost. A junior

:21:10.:21:24.

champion of two years ago, 21 years of age. You can see the rain. It

:21:25.:21:29.

makes it difficult. She kept her grip. All about the grip. It makes

:21:30.:21:37.

the surface potentially very slippery and the fiddly to qualify.

:21:38.:21:46.

Try and keep things dry as you can. Sometimes you just lose the will and

:21:47.:21:55.

give in. It is cold as well. Just 14 degrees. Morgan Lake, champion of

:21:56.:22:00.

the world in the junior ranks earlier this summer will sub it has

:22:01.:22:06.

been a golden summer so far. Here for the experience and started with

:22:07.:22:11.

a good clearance, 1.75, as we saw earlier. Well, I think Morgan Lake

:22:12.:22:20.

is about to go back and jumped so we will keep an eye out on that. The

:22:21.:22:29.

high jump, that can happen. Yes. What happens in the rain, you have

:22:30.:22:34.

to be able to trust your plants, and that is important. It is the set up.

:22:35.:22:41.

It makes the jump so much easier, so she has to plant well. And the know,

:22:42.:22:49.

it is all about that plant foot. -- Denyse would know. Right foot plant

:22:50.:22:54.

coming in from that left-hand side, and of course, you can't look down

:22:55.:23:00.

or question it. Unequivocal faith that it will stick. Morgan Lake

:23:01.:23:10.

looking very comfortable at 1.80. The perfect start so far. Remind

:23:11.:23:16.

yourself she is only 17 years of age. She is handling the pressure

:23:17.:23:28.

very well indeed. A reasonable chance of making the final, hasn't

:23:29.:23:34.

she? I think so. She is a competent young women and she is jumping

:23:35.:23:38.

really well, so there is no reason why she cannot make that final. From

:23:39.:23:43.

there, anything can happen. I am not expecting her to take a medal, but

:23:44.:23:48.

when the conditions are not really good, people make mistakes. It only

:23:49.:23:53.

takes one person to slip, which we saw in the men's qualification, and

:23:54.:23:58.

that sent ripples around the whole field that conditions are really

:23:59.:24:07.

bad. Get to know the team. That will be important and serve her well

:24:08.:24:14.

later in the year. Yes, just sneak in and blend in with the team. She

:24:15.:24:18.

is going to come into the background. When you have Catarina

:24:19.:24:23.

Johnson-Thompson there, she can just sneak in behind and develop, and it

:24:24.:24:27.

gives her time to develop without the pressure. Doing an event like

:24:28.:24:33.

this, it is good grounding. You make a very good point, both of you,

:24:34.:24:38.

about being introduced into the team. It is quite a nerve-racking

:24:39.:24:42.

experience. You don't really know everybody. Who do you go sit with

:24:43.:24:49.

when you go to eat? Yes. It takes some time to get that sense of

:24:50.:24:54.

belonging and to feel like part of that team. You see the little groups

:24:55.:25:00.

coming down to breakfast, and it is horrible, can I sit with them? This

:25:01.:25:12.

angel? Come on! A can guarantee you the men are enjoying the

:25:13.:25:20.

conditions. We are looking out for Robert Hafford and, he was the world

:25:21.:25:26.

champion -- Hathorne in, and he was the world champion and he is hoping

:25:27.:25:30.

to become the European champion as well. We have Steve Cram in the

:25:31.:25:38.

commentary box, and along him the -- alongside him, Tom Bosworth. The

:25:39.:25:44.

best performance by a British athlete in a walk since the 1980s. A

:25:45.:25:47.

very good morning to both of you. the atmosphere. You are going to go

:25:48.:26:03.

out and take part in an event like this, you do not want it to be warm

:26:04.:26:07.

and humid, but it is obviously very wet and potentially a bit slippery.

:26:08.:26:14.

Tom, you are very welcome. It was a bit wet when you are out there the

:26:15.:26:17.

other day. It was perfect conditions, really, and it was a

:26:18.:26:24.

great race. At the right time to dwell and to aid the people back

:26:25.:26:27.

that went up a bit too quickly. I was watching him, we were following

:26:28.:26:32.

it on the computer, we were taking people off, moving up to the field,

:26:33.:26:36.

and then just watching this race, this is the defending champion, who

:26:37.:26:42.

is having a great event again this morning, but Hafford and --

:26:43.:26:58.

Heffernan, does he time -- have time to get up to the leader? They are

:26:59.:27:06.

still pushing it at the front. He is a stretching his lead now. We will

:27:07.:27:11.

see what happens in the latter half. It has been a fast first half. If

:27:12.:27:19.

you are not aware, the 50 K walk taking place downtown in Zurich, it

:27:20.:27:24.

is a two km loop, and the tramlines are a major feature. Paula Radcliffe

:27:25.:27:32.

will be with us tomorrow for this event. The tramlines have been

:27:33.:27:37.

filled with a rope which is made of banana leaves, eye and told, and I

:27:38.:27:46.

am just going to bring you in, Paula. You actually know it did as,

:27:47.:27:56.

don't you? His light is a teacher and she is looking for a job and

:27:57.:28:00.

possibly looking to relocate -- his wife is a teacher and she is looking

:28:01.:28:05.

for a job and possibly to relocate. We will have Paula a Child watch

:28:06.:28:19.

will stop you -- we will have Paula on Child watch. To be fair, you have

:28:20.:28:25.

got to grade your own race and go on how you are feeling. There is still

:28:26.:28:30.

over 20 K left to go. Robert looks comfortable in this group. He is

:28:31.:28:36.

going to be wanting to pull the leader to the back. The world

:28:37.:28:41.

champion currently in that group, vying for third spot, Diniz, the

:28:42.:28:51.

defending champion, is leading, and he has the Russian athlete not too

:28:52.:28:55.

far behind him at this moment. Still fairly early. There is the Russian

:28:56.:29:01.

just about two or three seconds behind the leader. A short Paula

:29:02.:29:12.

Radcliffe run alongside tram line number two, and you find yourself in

:29:13.:29:17.

the Letzigrund Stadium at the start of this morning's track action. This

:29:18.:29:22.

is the first heat. The women are going to get wet anyway so the rate

:29:23.:29:26.

and will not make much difference to them. -- the rain will not make much

:29:27.:29:34.

difference to them. 15 athletes will progress to the finals, the top five

:29:35.:29:42.

and the top fastest losers. No British athlete in this, which is a

:29:43.:29:48.

real shame. Rachel Bamford ran so well. All of them very close to the

:29:49.:30:01.

qualification mark that had been set by British Athletics, 9.43, and Iraq

:30:02.:30:14.

and that nine point -- and I think that two or three seconds near that

:30:15.:30:19.

Mark, we will see them through to the final, honestly. There was a

:30:20.:30:28.

case to argue under the potential of the juniors to come to these

:30:29.:30:36.

competitions -- championships. I am sure they are currently running

:30:37.:30:47.

today and they will be qualified. Eriksson of Finland is an

:30:48.:30:50.

outstanding runner as she has already had a great year.

:30:51.:31:01.

This young lady leading the charge as far as Europe is concerned,

:31:02.:31:06.

Eriksson. She has had a great season. She is trying to make

:31:07.:31:13.

herself a better all-round athlete. If you are going to do well in

:31:14.:31:17.

Championships against Ethiopians and Kenyans, you need that speed as well

:31:18.:31:21.

as the strength to run this tough event. Absolutely.

:31:22.:31:56.

should look out for. It is not and event where there are any real

:31:57.:31:59.

outstanding favourites although think I we should keep an eye on

:32:00.:32:14.

Eriksson. These races... For some of these athletes, when they do get to

:32:15.:32:19.

the final, it'll be interesting to see whether those personal bests any

:32:20.:32:20.

relevance whatsoever. Unless we have somebody who has

:32:21.:32:33.

really been inspired by the frontrunning...

:32:34.:32:46.

Eriksson setting the early pace, nothing too difficult. She wants to

:32:47.:32:54.

improve and she is leading them at a decent pace.

:32:55.:33:02.

We have seen Schwanitz already booked herself in the final.

:33:03.:33:37.

This athlete is a European indoor bronze champion.

:33:38.:34:01.

It is always a nice feeling when you get over qualifying early on.

:34:02.:34:07.

Especially today when it is raining. You can get out of the rain, get

:34:08.:34:13.

dry, eat and get your mind on the final. And prepare. Prepare to

:34:14.:34:16.

challenge the medals. The sparse crowd in here this

:34:17.:34:34.

morning, delighted to see Schlumpf. What a fantastic name that is. It

:34:35.:34:46.

means Smurf in French, I am pretty sure. But it is not French is it?

:34:47.:34:53.

Jemma they speak French in parts of Switzerland. I will have to get the

:34:54.:34:59.

linguists on that, I do not accept that! I am not having it! We can

:35:00.:35:12.

find this out if we have got nothing better to do! It is Schlumpf who is

:35:13.:35:21.

leading. And Mismas coming through as well. Eriksson just on their

:35:22.:35:26.

shoulder. They are almost jogging at the

:35:27.:35:45.

moment. Only five set to go through. This is Morgan Lake. That is her

:35:46.:35:55.

first failure of the morning. It did not look quite as committed. The

:35:56.:36:01.

first one looked very good indeed. That looks may be a little just

:36:02.:36:08.

within herself. She probably will need that one metre 85 to qualify.

:36:09.:36:13.

1.94 is automatic. In wet conditions, it is made more

:36:14.:36:23.

difficult. Smurf gate continues! We have looked it up. Apologies, I got

:36:24.:36:30.

it wrong. A couple of slow laps and they are

:36:31.:36:52.

just starting to gather. That technique of Ericsson's. --

:36:53.:37:07.

Eriksson's. She had a great run in the Glasgow diamond league. Eriksson

:37:08.:37:15.

just having a little look around. She can sense four or five are

:37:16.:37:21.

starting to move clear. She will be happy Vlasova is starting to stretch

:37:22.:37:28.

them a little. Six girls starting to break away. Mismas of Slovenia just

:37:29.:37:35.

struggling to hold onto the back of those first five although she star

:37:36.:37:41.

have a chance. -- she will still have a chance. Vlasova stretching

:37:42.:37:51.

them out and with those four pulling away, there is a battle for fifth

:37:52.:37:59.

place. Mismas will be aware of that. And Schlumpf. They can now work

:38:00.:38:04.

together little bit to try to close that gap. They can pull each other

:38:05.:38:09.

to a faster time as well. This time round, it will be the

:38:10.:38:25.

bell. Cleanly over. I like the way Eriksson is looking around and

:38:26.:38:31.

checking things way things are. -- checking where things are.

:38:32.:38:45.

Eriksson can also look up at the screen. She has run an intelligent

:38:46.:38:53.

race, nothing more than she needed to do and kept herself in the right

:38:54.:38:59.

place. She will have picked up some experience and good advice from her

:39:00.:39:08.

coach. Mismas starting to make a bit of an effort here. Schlumpf will try

:39:09.:39:15.

to hold her. Top five don't forget. Four well clear. Eriksson keep s

:39:16.:39:20.

looking around. You would suspect six of them would

:39:21.:39:31.

go through anyway because there is a big gap between Osman Caer and

:39:32.:39:36.

Schlumpf. It is not over yet. The Swiss

:39:37.:39:46.

athlete is being cheered by the crowd and she picks it up again.

:39:47.:39:52.

Eriksson, Schlumpf also guarantees her spot in the final.

:39:53.:39:59.

The others will have to wait and see, including Casandra.

:40:00.:40:12.

Now then, Morgan Lake. This is his second attempt. She is choosing to

:40:13.:40:18.

keep her tights and to stay warm. It is wet and the problem with that is

:40:19.:40:21.

that you do not carry those wet tights and that... She's the only at

:40:22.:40:28.

the jumping in the long Lycra. Second attempt anyway. 1.85. It is a

:40:29.:40:38.

better attempt, very good. Showing some tenacity at a young age. Always

:40:39.:40:43.

a good sign. We know she is talented and we know she can win gold medals.

:40:44.:40:48.

She won a gold medal at the world junior championships earlier in the

:40:49.:40:51.

summer. That is a good attempt from Morgan Lake. 1.89 as the next

:40:52.:40:58.

height. It looks as if we're going to go there.

:40:59.:41:07.

STUDIO: Well done to Morgan Lake and looking good hopefully for the

:41:08.:41:13.

women's high jump final. We are going to look back to the men's

:41:14.:41:19.

steeple chase last night which was somewhat controversial.

:41:20.:41:33.

He was given a yellow card for unsportsmanlike behaviour. But then

:41:34.:41:40.

the Spanish complain that their athlete finished in fourth place.

:41:41.:41:55.

And then the first athlete was disqualified and the French appeal

:41:56.:41:57.

that. So making --... In football for example, I don't

:41:58.:42:22.

really mind seeing somebody celebrating, enjoying the goal they

:42:23.:42:26.

have scored and he was clearly enjoying the final home stretch. I

:42:27.:42:31.

don't think the athletes he is competing against, that they were

:42:32.:42:33.

bothered either. It says here that bids may be worn

:42:34.:42:47.

and should not be obscure word in any way. I was disqualified at a

:42:48.:42:56.

northern league meeting in Carlisle, on a very sunny day. I was

:42:57.:43:05.

sunbathing in between rounds. On the third round, I forgot to put my vest

:43:06.:43:11.

back on and I jumped topless! And I did not count. I would have

:43:12.:43:19.

disqualified you! I was disqualified for not displaying a bib properly.

:43:20.:43:33.

I don't think this runner brought the sport into disrepute. I don't

:43:34.:43:40.

think you did anything that was aggressive or offensive. The rules

:43:41.:43:46.

do say you are supposed to display your number. With electric timing,

:43:47.:43:52.

they have to record the times in order and maybe that is the biggest

:43:53.:43:57.

issue. Somebody in European athletics has sat down and thought,

:43:58.:44:02.

we do not like this. Maybe they thought, we do not like him. He has

:44:03.:44:09.

got himself into a bit of hot water in previous championships, fighting

:44:10.:44:13.

with his fellow athletes and pushing over mascots. He is the bad boy of

:44:14.:44:19.

athletics. It all stems from the fact that Spain complained. They put

:44:20.:44:23.

in the protest at the beginning and they threw it out to make a

:44:24.:44:29.

decision. Spain has not been doing that well for medals and they need

:44:30.:44:33.

medals and they have a circumstance where the boxes they need to take

:44:34.:44:37.

along the way. Unfortunately for him, he has suffered from that

:44:38.:44:42.

absolute circumstance. It is a tough one to call. Let's think about other

:44:43.:44:46.

people you could possibly disqualified for doing something

:44:47.:44:47.

very similar. In Beijing, disqualified for doing something

:44:48.:44:53.

very similar. In the 100 metres, a runner was disqualified, because he

:44:54.:45:14.

was not trying at the end. He did exactly the same thing in the

:45:15.:45:16.

semifinal as he was crossing the line. All of these things are

:45:17.:45:26.

circumstances. Talking about Robert Harting, he was throwing a discus at

:45:27.:45:33.

the time, but he was still at the field of competition. So this is

:45:34.:45:35.

where it becomes a little bit controversial. The athletes have got

:45:36.:45:45.

to stand up there... But we don't know what was through his mind. He

:45:46.:45:50.

had no idea that the official didn't like that. He kept it in his mouth

:45:51.:45:56.

to Kevin he knows he has to cross the line with his best, but the

:45:57.:46:06.

question is, would he do anything like that again? I threw my vest off

:46:07.:46:10.

into the crowd, should I have been disqualified? I am interested to

:46:11.:46:17.

know what Steve Cram thinks. Do you think he should have been

:46:18.:46:22.

disqualified? That is why I am a commentator and not an official! It

:46:23.:46:28.

can be seen as a bit disrespectful. I think he caught controversy, and

:46:29.:46:32.

that does not help, but it is a little bit harsh in the end. The

:46:33.:46:37.

officials did not disqualify him in the first place. It was the Spanish

:46:38.:46:41.

team requesting it, which is annoying. Diniz is a struggling in

:46:42.:46:51.

terms of his position. He has dropped back. I am not sure he is

:46:52.:46:56.

struggling but I think the group is split up a little bit, and he will

:46:57.:47:03.

want to get back up there as soon as possible and move it on. The fronts

:47:04.:47:07.

to are still pushing it. This is an incredibly fast pace. -- the front

:47:08.:47:19.

two. This is a world champion here knows how to race. 20 K is your

:47:20.:47:25.

speciality and a 50 K is a bit like a marathon, it is a different

:47:26.:47:29.

event, getting the pace right, when you make your move, and you can get

:47:30.:47:36.

it worldly wrong. Definitely. They are completely different events. In

:47:37.:47:43.

my -- you can get it really wrong. Definitely. They are completely

:47:44.:47:48.

different events. Tactics are key. If you get it wrong in the beginning

:47:49.:47:51.

you might not finish. These guys have set up a very fast pace. These

:47:52.:48:03.

guys are of an older age, and I will come back to that in a moment, but

:48:04.:48:07.

we are going to pop back to the stadium, because the second heat of

:48:08.:48:15.

the steeplechase is about to start. We have come back for that. And I

:48:16.:48:24.

need, apart from Cooly the Cow, I need to clear up Smurf gate. I am

:48:25.:48:34.

being told by one of my former BBC colleagues that Schlumpf is the

:48:35.:48:40.

German word for a Smurf. Well done, Paula, but it was just the wrong

:48:41.:48:47.

language! There are the five wildfires. Mismas with a record for

:48:48.:49:02.

Slovenia. -- top-5 qualifiers. As Steve was mentioning, it is a gentle

:49:03.:49:08.

qualifying, because 22 runners overall, 15 and going through.

:49:09.:49:15.

Fougberg might be the favourite, not just for this heat, but for the

:49:16.:49:19.

final it self. Low cloud over the hills surrounding Zurich. The crowds

:49:20.:49:26.

have been a little bit disappointing at this European Championships. Even

:49:27.:49:33.

in the evening sessions, there have been huge numbers of empty seats.

:49:34.:49:41.

Plenty of noise, but apart from that, lots of noise for Schlumpf in

:49:42.:49:56.

the previous heat, and here they have... Five out of the two heats. I

:49:57.:50:10.

think it was around the 9.54 time that could still qualify you as a

:50:11.:50:13.

running as the fastest loser. Do you think the standard was set a

:50:14.:50:29.

little bit too high? Yes. The European Championships should be

:50:30.:50:32.

used as a stepping stone, and I don't think we will see this event

:50:33.:50:36.

and the final much quicker than that time, so it would have perhaps in a

:50:37.:50:46.

reward, but it would have been a good experience for Rachel Bamford

:50:47.:50:50.

to come and compete here. Let's had to the field. -- had to the field.

:50:51.:51:11.

Morgan Lake has removed her tights. The spikes go back on, and 1.89 is

:51:12.:51:20.

the next height. We have seen the defending champion already go clear

:51:21.:51:23.

at this height, but looking at a lot of sales at this height down the

:51:24.:51:29.

board, and this might be the height that is enough to make you through

:51:30.:51:36.

to the final. Morgan Lake here, 17 years of age. She can handle it.

:51:37.:51:43.

There is no getting away from the fact that she loves a championship

:51:44.:51:47.

environment. She has proved that at junior level. It is something that

:51:48.:51:55.

is a question about whether you can teach it or learn it or whether you

:51:56.:52:02.

are born with it. It seems to be the latter for Morgan Lake. Not only is

:52:03.:52:06.

she talented across all seven of the disciplines, but most of all, the

:52:07.:52:09.

one where she is most comfortable and talented is the high jump, which

:52:10.:52:19.

is where she goes in her first attempt at 1.89, five cm short of

:52:20.:52:26.

her lifetime asked. First attempt. Oh, no. Leaned into that. Went early

:52:27.:52:36.

at it. Failed on the first attempt. She has also knocked the bar off.

:52:37.:52:48.

Morgan Lake, a learning curve at this level. She will be taking it

:52:49.:52:56.

all on board, gathering her thoughts, getting ready for her

:52:57.:53:03.

second attempt. Meanwhile, the last of the heats to move through to the

:53:04.:53:10.

final in the 3000 metre steeplechase taking place. Five laps remaining.

:53:11.:53:15.

The German champion is still out in front. Just behind her, a silver

:53:16.:53:28.

medallist from last year, one of the height quality Russian athletes.

:53:29.:53:33.

When you look at the steeplechase in major championships, these are

:53:34.:53:34.

fairly When you look at the steeplechase in

:53:35.:53:34.

major championships, these recent happenings.

:53:35.:53:55.

running these steeplechase? It would have been a little bit hard for you

:53:56.:54:01.

with your dodgy foot. With my dodgy style of trying to jump anything, it

:54:02.:54:04.

would have been very hard for me. The short answer is no. As you saw

:54:05.:54:13.

there with Sussman, these girls are still learning a lot about the water

:54:14.:54:18.

jump, and it is dangerous when there are so many people in front of you,

:54:19.:54:22.

and accidents like that can easily happen. I prefer to run without any

:54:23.:54:28.

barriers. It is a different type of running than steeplechase because

:54:29.:54:33.

they have to keep something in their legs for the last 500-600 metres,

:54:34.:54:38.

because you cannot jump barriers when you are tired. People around me

:54:39.:54:47.

are laughing so I am laughing at those people that are laughing, but

:54:48.:54:54.

that was a belly flop. It was like watching the television series

:54:55.:55:02.

splash. High-caliber athletes, 9.43, so she has got back in there.

:55:03.:55:17.

Moldner-Schmidt has been leading so far. She is a very good athlete,

:55:18.:55:25.

with a personal best of 9.18, but had to miss the entire 2010 season,

:55:26.:55:31.

so she has battled back really well, had the all clear and is now

:55:32.:55:39.

running very well here. Fougberg is probably the one to watch in this

:55:40.:55:46.

field, although she has moved very steadily through this field. She is

:55:47.:55:50.

now just making sure that she stays in the top-5 and does no more than

:55:51.:55:56.

absolutely to qualify for that final. Sussman is still fairly

:55:57.:56:03.

comfortable. Five fastest losers get through as well, so as long as she

:56:04.:56:06.

does not panic, even with that fall into the water, and you have Lovness

:56:07.:56:19.

as loud, so -- as well, so they must not panic, they must hang onto the

:56:20.:56:25.

back and maintain contact. They could still go through. Just

:56:26.:56:34.

checking the pace of this one compared to the previous heat. The

:56:35.:56:44.

Swiss corner has been dividing plenty of noise here. It is

:56:45.:57:00.

Jelizarova, and just ahead of Moldner-Schmidt, a heart-warming

:57:01.:57:07.

story that she is competing again after that battle with cancer, and

:57:08.:57:13.

she is settling in in second place. I don't know whether she was caught

:57:14.:57:20.

a little bit mapping by Jelizarova, making a push ahead and pushing the

:57:21.:57:24.

pace on, but she was caught in about seventh or eighth place, and she has

:57:25.:57:31.

moved quickly to put herself back in that group of six, Danekova, and

:57:32.:57:35.

they think she knows what she needs to do to get in the top five. -- I

:57:36.:57:48.

think she knows. There has got to be a bit of a tussle for the top five

:57:49.:57:53.

places. They are starting to wind it up a little bit now. Moldner-Schmidt

:57:54.:58:01.

in second place behind Jelizarova, and Fougberg, who I think is the

:58:02.:58:05.

favourite over the two heats, looking for third place at the

:58:06.:58:13.

moment. Lewis hurts is in there as well. They just have a lap to go. If

:58:14.:58:21.

you watch the technique of Duke Burger, you can see why she probably

:58:22.:58:26.

is the favourite -- Fougberg, you can see why she is probably the

:58:27.:58:32.

favourite coming in. She is 29 years old. She was only running 10.10 a

:58:33.:58:38.

couple of years ago, and she has improved. She sits in second place

:58:39.:58:49.

just on the shoulder of Jelizarova. Moldner-Schmidt is there in third

:58:50.:58:59.

place. Enclosed six. Martin is there. Just losing contact with the

:59:00.:59:13.

top five. Losing a bit of pace, Theresa Rabbi hanging on there in

:59:14.:59:18.

third place, and Martin -- Jelizarova is hanging on there in

:59:19.:59:24.

third place, and Martin is there. She tried to clear a bit of herself

:59:25.:59:30.

to come through. I am not sure why she feels the need to win this

:59:31.:59:33.

steeplechase in such a dominant fashion. Only five from this six

:59:34.:59:44.

here. Martin might just get it on the line. I think she has, in fact.

:59:45.:59:52.

Kowalska. We're going to check the times. Kowalska will go through

:59:53.:00:02.

anyway. One of the five automatic qualifiers, Martin. Danekova winning

:00:03.:00:13.

it ahead of Moldner-Schmidt. There is just behind her will go through

:00:14.:00:18.

as fastest losers. -- those just behind her will go through as

:00:19.:00:30.

fastest losers. She is one of three athletes that have gone clear so

:00:31.:00:32.

far, Kuchina. The door may be opened for Kuchina.

:00:33.:00:55.

It looks as though she is starting her campaign well to take the

:00:56.:00:59.

European title. Across to Morgan Lake. We saw her first time fail at

:01:00.:01:08.

1.89. She will have half an eye on the heptathlon, the leader, Thiam,

:01:09.:01:20.

of Belgium, cleared 1.97 yesterday. No. Again, dropping that left

:01:21.:01:24.

shoulder at take-off and that, for me, is the upper body getting a

:01:25.:01:32.

little bit keen. The coach, behind, with her father. They will be

:01:33.:01:39.

analysing and trying to communicate. But it is always difficult. You look

:01:40.:01:43.

up to a sea of people waving their arms and you cannot really hear

:01:44.:01:47.

them. This is where a young athlete is questions of terms of, what do

:01:48.:01:54.

you do to coach this, she has had to Max fails and one more and she is

:01:55.:01:59.

out. 1.89 will be needed to advance to the final on Sunday. Morgan Lake

:02:00.:02:05.

and a little bit of pressure. She will have a few minutes to gather

:02:06.:02:08.

herself before her final attempt at this height.

:02:09.:02:19.

In downtown Zurich, two men are leading this walk. Diniz, the

:02:20.:02:33.

defending champion, he has had that lead taken away from him a couple of

:02:34.:02:39.

times. We have already had some disqualifications. Why do you get

:02:40.:02:46.

disqualified, what is the process? The rules are in place to ensure the

:02:47.:02:50.

athletes are classed as walking and not running. You see that you can

:02:51.:02:58.

get three red cards and then you get disqualified. You get a red card for

:02:59.:03:01.

lifting which is breaking contact so as soon as that back foot leaves the

:03:02.:03:07.

ground, the front one has to land. And your leg has to land straight

:03:08.:03:14.

might just the front legs. -- just the front leg. There was a bit of a

:03:15.:03:20.

bent knee from Toth going around the corner. Quite a tight corner. You

:03:21.:03:30.

can get... There is a red paddle which is a straight

:03:31.:03:33.

disqualification? The chief judge will disqualify you, the only way so

:03:34.:03:42.

that is in the final 100 metres, is if they deemed be running. That

:03:43.:03:48.

corner is really quite tight which is why they seem to be breaking the

:03:49.:03:52.

rules, but the judge will look kindly on that. But if they keep

:03:53.:03:55.

doing it, there will be eight red card. -- a red card. We talked about

:03:56.:04:06.

experience and keeping going. Diniz is 36 now. Still competing at a very

:04:07.:04:14.

high standard. It is like the marathon, the longer the event, they

:04:15.:04:19.

take years and years of training. It takes years to get this good. Garcia

:04:20.:04:26.

is in his six European Championships which is just incredible. World

:04:27.:04:30.

champion in 1993I think. It shows that age is a good thing. -- will

:04:31.:04:37.

champion in 1993, I think. Travelling at that kind of speed

:04:38.:04:58.

over ten K and 20 K really helps you push in this part of the race. It

:04:59.:05:03.

will get faster, even now, with about 14 kilometres to go. Diniz is

:05:04.:05:15.

an all-rounder. Just talk about the long endurance event like this in

:05:16.:05:18.

terms of taking on liquids, whatever else, in terms of gels and things we

:05:19.:05:24.

see in the marathon and long cycling races. Digne it is less important is

:05:25.:05:30.

the 20 kilometres, you just have to try to stay hydrated. This takes

:05:31.:05:39.

practice, they will do 30, 40 kilometre walks in training and they

:05:40.:05:43.

will practice what they can take, what they enjoy the taste of what

:05:44.:05:47.

their stomach can take. If your stomach goes midway through at this

:05:48.:05:51.

point, it will be trouble. Interestingly, Diniz opting to keep

:05:52.:06:05.

out of the way of the spray mist, a bit of a surge from him. This race

:06:06.:06:17.

has a card against his name as well. This is the point, 30 odd kilometres

:06:18.:06:22.

in, Diniz will at it and see if you can get away from him and go for the

:06:23.:06:30.

gold. Diniz opening up a slight lead in the 50 kilometre walk. Still a

:06:31.:06:31.

way to go there. There is Morgan Lake, a lone figure,

:06:32.:06:46.

walking in Lane 1. She has just had a sprint around in the opposite

:06:47.:06:51.

direction to wake the legs up. She knows the indications of her next

:06:52.:06:54.

attempt in this high jump qualification. She has knocked the

:06:55.:07:02.

bar off twice. 1.89. Her dad in the cap. To his right, Richard Aspen,

:07:03.:07:11.

her high jump specific coach. Always a team behind a multi-event here,

:07:12.:07:20.

focusing on the high jump. Her most successful event of the summer so

:07:21.:07:25.

far, as world junior champion. She is looking to get some support and

:07:26.:07:32.

you just dig deep. Trust yourself. Works on everything in training, it

:07:33.:07:36.

is a time to clear the mind. Trust the body and let loose. Come on

:07:37.:07:44.

Morgan Lake. That was her best attempt but it was not quite good

:07:45.:07:47.

enough. It was way better than the first two. At this particular

:07:48.:07:53.

height. It looked as though she was over but she just knocked it off.

:07:54.:07:57.

That is a shame and she will have to wait and see whether her previous

:07:58.:08:03.

clearance at 1.85 may be enough. I doubt whether it is. I am looking

:08:04.:08:09.

down the field of athletes who have gone clear at 1.89. We will come

:08:10.:08:14.

back to you and maybe clarify her overall position.

:08:15.:08:23.

It looks as though Morgan Lake may have gone out in the qualification.

:08:24.:08:36.

In this women's high jump. There is dad looking on, he can barely watch.

:08:37.:08:48.

That is a real shame for Morgan Lake. As a youngster, these sorts of

:08:49.:08:57.

things, at the time, they seem so important, for her and her career,

:08:58.:09:00.

this will be a minor thing which she will get over and she will be a

:09:01.:09:04.

great athlete in the coming years. Without a shadow of a doubt. You

:09:05.:09:09.

come here for the experience but if it is a bad experience, it is not a

:09:10.:09:12.

great one to carry with you. But it is a learning curve and athletics is

:09:13.:09:17.

about going with the good and the bad days. Morgan Lake will have to

:09:18.:09:25.

go away back to the drawing board in terms of senior debut at a major

:09:26.:09:29.

championships. But still a successful summer for the

:09:30.:09:30.

17-year-old. Tears from Morgan Lake and I don't

:09:31.:09:42.

think we would have expected that. You just never know how an athlete

:09:43.:09:46.

feels, it is a lonely place out there. She's coming off a lonely

:09:47.:09:49.

place and she wants to do well in this competition. She knows this

:09:50.:09:54.

height is well within her capabilities. It is just getting

:09:55.:09:58.

that feeling that you are not letting people down. You make

:09:59.:10:03.

mistakes, it happens. Her dad is there. He will be feeling it for his

:10:04.:10:08.

daughter. It is just a sad situation and I did not expect her to cry.

:10:09.:10:15.

Maybe the cold got to her little bit. You saw her shaking herself off

:10:16.:10:20.

when she landed in that puddle. That last attempt she gave was probably

:10:21.:10:23.

what she should have started with because she looked just out of sorts

:10:24.:10:28.

for the first two attempts. You can see the reaction. We were all doing

:10:29.:10:33.

the same thing in the studio because it looked like she was well over.

:10:34.:10:37.

But she will learn and she will move on from this. She knows there are

:10:38.:10:43.

bigger and better things to come. She is 17. Steve Cram said it will

:10:44.:10:47.

be a minor disappointment for her. In some ways, it is a good sign. I

:10:48.:10:53.

was just about to say that. The fact she is so emotional, it shows how

:10:54.:10:57.

much it really means to her. She wanted to do well here, she wanted

:10:58.:11:02.

to do the best you could possibly do and she feels she has underperformed

:11:03.:11:05.

but don't worry Morgan, you'll have more successes become. To win the

:11:06.:11:11.

World Junior Championships at the age of 17, it is a phenomenal

:11:12.:11:16.

performance. That is what she should be celebrating. Not a minor, a

:11:17.:11:24.

really minor hiccup here. When I went out at the qualifying round in

:11:25.:11:28.

my first championships, I didn't care, I was just happy to be there.

:11:29.:11:34.

She has seen that Jo Pavey and the other athlete have got medals and

:11:35.:11:39.

she thinks, OK, I want to be part of that success. She just was to have a

:11:40.:11:42.

good go at it. Laura Weightman got silver in the

:11:43.:11:51.

Commonwealth Games and hopefully another medal here. She is up

:11:52.:11:57.

against two Ethiopians who are running for Sweden and Turkey. The

:11:58.:12:00.

British record-holder is Kelly homes and we caught up with her. She was

:12:01.:12:03.

reflecting on her early years. When I was 14 years old, my dreams

:12:04.:12:26.

came to fruition. One was to be the Olympic champion. I watched

:12:27.:12:31.

Sebastian Coe win the 1500 metres. The fact it was a British athlete

:12:32.:12:35.

who had won an Olympic gold medal in an event I was running in as a young

:12:36.:12:39.

girl. I got goose bumps and I knew at that moment I wanted to become an

:12:40.:12:43.

Olympic champion. I remember going back to school from the summer

:12:44.:12:48.

holidays and telling people I was going to be Olympic champion and

:12:49.:12:51.

they said, we know you are. It was really weird. My second was to be in

:12:52.:12:58.

the British army as a physical training instructor. I joined the

:12:59.:13:03.

army when I was nearly 18 years old but I did not become a physical

:13:04.:13:06.

training instructor, I became a heavy goods driver, because I could

:13:07.:13:13.

not get in. I still hold the license, I am just young enough! I

:13:14.:13:19.

actually ended my junior international career to join the

:13:20.:13:24.

British army, that year, when I was 17. I made the decision I was going

:13:25.:13:33.

to go into the army. You had given up on your dream? Not really but I

:13:34.:13:39.

think that was the moment in time, I was 17, nearly 18 and it was a job,

:13:40.:13:44.

something I could do. I had given up for that first year, and then

:13:45.:13:48.

because I was the fastest on our basic fitness test, everyone was

:13:49.:13:54.

going, you are quite a good runner. I then got selected for the army

:13:55.:13:57.

championships and I was quite happy to do them. If I compare it to what

:13:58.:14:07.

I now know about university, that is all I used to do, have fun.

:14:08.:14:17.

1992, watching the Olympic Games, I remember watching Lisa York. She was

:14:18.:14:25.

in the 3000 metres. Somebody I used to compete against when I was young

:14:26.:14:30.

and occasionally I beat her. And there she was. That was the moment

:14:31.:14:35.

when I reconnected with the dream I had when I was 14. I got the goose

:14:36.:14:39.

bumps again and I could not believe she was there and I thought, that is

:14:40.:14:41.

what I want to do. In those early days, as a senior, I

:14:42.:15:01.

was not afraid because I did not really know anyone. I did not know

:15:02.:15:04.

anyone on that circuit. I had heard of people and I saw them win. The

:15:05.:15:26.

naivete was good at that stage. That was my first gold medal and there

:15:27.:15:33.

remember it very well. It was surreal to be in these big stadiums

:15:34.:15:37.

winning medals but I was just going back to normality. It was very

:15:38.:15:43.

strange but also really good grounding to keep my feet on the

:15:44.:15:49.

ground. I used my leave from the Armed Forces to go away and compete

:15:50.:15:53.

and then come back, and if I had guard duties I would change them

:15:54.:15:57.

around. That was my real strength in the first two or three years of my

:15:58.:16:02.

career, the fact that most of my training was as a soldier. A double

:16:03.:16:12.

Olympic champion. Paula Radcliffe has joined us. Quite an amazing

:16:13.:16:20.

career, and you see that right through the early years, what she

:16:21.:16:26.

achieved, something that might not so easily have happened. Exactly. I

:16:27.:16:32.

did not see all of the video, I did not see whether or not she mentioned

:16:33.:16:35.

it, but she was a championship after -- she was in championships after

:16:36.:16:45.

seeing a lease. That got her back into running, and to see what she

:16:46.:16:51.

could do, and in the same way that Jo Pavey and in the same way that Jo

:16:52.:16:53.

Pavey embodies perseverance, she stepped in there through so many

:16:54.:17:06.

injuries. She has been putting in the miles again. She has been

:17:07.:17:11.

adapting to life on the bike. It was a bit tricky to start off with, but

:17:12.:17:16.

she is loving it. We all know what she is like, she loves the

:17:17.:17:20.

competition, and all of the great stuff she does, inspiring young

:17:21.:17:24.

people, and there is still that burning desire to compete, and she

:17:25.:17:29.

is doing quite well. Men's 1,500 metres coming up. The bad boy of

:17:30.:17:40.

European Athletics. What is your view on him being banned? I think he

:17:41.:17:47.

needed to be sanctioned in some way. When you see it happen because

:17:48.:17:50.

another team has protested just because they want a medal, does not

:17:51.:17:55.

sit right or feel right, but just to give him a yellow card, he might

:17:56.:18:02.

think he will do it again, but he won't do it again now. Maybe he

:18:03.:18:09.

should have just been fined. It did not affect the result of the race

:18:10.:18:12.

but it was very disrespectful for the other athletes. Is he a

:18:13.:18:19.

contender in this event? I think so. We will see how it goes today, how

:18:20.:18:24.

much it has taken out of him. Charlie Grice in this one. It is all

:18:25.:18:27.

yours, Steve. Way too many men in there. 16 in two

:18:28.:18:35.

heats, and they could have done with three heats. Police that will be a

:18:36.:18:47.

danger here. -- Holusa. There is the men that many people think will be

:18:48.:18:54.

the favourite. Two very good Belgian athletes. O Lionaird, John Travers

:18:55.:19:12.

as well. He is next to the bad boy, Mekhissi-Benabbad. Maybe welling up

:19:13.:19:19.

a little bit there. He probably has huge regrets about but he did. I am

:19:20.:19:24.

not sure it was spontaneous. He said it was. He seems to make spontaneous

:19:25.:19:31.

decisions in his career that often and him and a bit of trouble. Just

:19:32.:19:36.

as we look at Charlie, people don't know that there was an incident as

:19:37.:19:41.

well where Mekhissi-Benabbad had a fight with one of his team-mates,

:19:42.:19:43.

well where Mekhissi-Benabbad had a fight with one a real fight. The

:19:44.:19:49.

striker had a fight with one of his team-mates, a real fight. -- he had

:19:50.:19:59.

a fight with one of his team-mates, a real fight. Charlie Grice is going

:20:00.:20:02.

to have to be on his toes. It is not going to be easy. 16 men in the

:20:03.:20:11.

heat. In a race which potentially could be quite slow, this is too

:20:12.:20:18.

many, isn't it? There could have easily been three heats, it could

:20:19.:20:24.

have easily been organised in that manner. 16 of these men, I predict

:20:25.:20:31.

they will finish with their running strips on, there will not be any

:20:32.:20:36.

disrobing today. I thought Mekhissi-Benabbad was foolish last

:20:37.:20:42.

night. But he was an easy run for him. He did react foolishly. When I

:20:43.:20:46.

saw the yellow card, I thought that was fair enough, and it was a

:20:47.:20:53.

warning, but to take away a hard earned European title, a title he

:20:54.:20:57.

has worked for, there must have been better ways of doing it. He broke

:20:58.:21:02.

several rules last night, but other people have broken worse rules than

:21:03.:21:07.

that before and gone unsanctioned. It was silly what he did. I am not

:21:08.:21:14.

sure anyone distinguish themselves by taking has medal away. Many of

:21:15.:21:18.

the athletes here will be watching him but also they will be pleased to

:21:19.:21:24.

see stretch strict Spain to stretch out after that decent lap. -- also

:21:25.:21:34.

they will be pleased to see Spain stretch out after that decent lap.

:21:35.:21:46.

Ingebrigsten, boxed in the inside. It is OK, two laps to go, start to

:21:47.:21:49.

think about moving out a little bit. It is OK, two laps to go, start to

:21:50.:21:54.

think about moving Decent pace. It is easier when they are moving

:21:55.:21:58.

quicker. The nerves have gone. Charlie Grice has got a lot around,

:21:59.:22:06.

he is trapped on the inside. He is a promising young athlete. You can see

:22:07.:22:13.

the acceleration is beginning to happen as they go down the back

:22:14.:22:18.

straight, with 600 metres to go. Charlie Grice has got a lot to do.

:22:19.:22:25.

He just does not need to panic. This is still good pace and there is

:22:26.:22:29.

plenty of space for Charlie. Ingebrigsten wants to control this.

:22:30.:22:36.

The other Belgian athlete is charging Grice. They are coming down

:22:37.:22:47.

the home stretch. Charlie Grice does not need to lose his position. The

:22:48.:22:53.

first four to go through and then the first four fastest losers. You

:22:54.:22:59.

cannot rely on it. Charlie Grice moves into fourth place. Overall, it

:23:00.:23:07.

is going well. Holusa will finish quickly. Ingebrigsten looks for a

:23:08.:23:16.

bit of room. Charlie has not got to panic, just keep his elbows sharp.

:23:17.:23:21.

He is in a good spot here. Charlie Grice running brilliantly. Holusa in

:23:22.:23:29.

the fourth spot. Charlie looks behind and see their little bit of

:23:30.:23:33.

danger. Has got to be strong here. He moves away. Mekhissi-Benabbad --

:23:34.:23:45.

Mekhissi-Benabbad is one of the qualifiers. He came from nowhere.

:23:46.:23:53.

But Charlie, well done, excellent, did not panic when people were

:23:54.:24:00.

around him with 600 to go. It is going to open up. Yes, they are all

:24:01.:24:05.

charging, no more than this men here. He is probably trying to

:24:06.:24:11.

forget about yesterday. Mekhissi-Benabbad, their emotional.

:24:12.:24:15.

He has made it to the final. It must have been difficult for him last

:24:16.:24:19.

night, and indeed this morning, whether or not to come and run, but

:24:20.:24:23.

he has made it through in third place. Not such an easy time, not

:24:24.:24:33.

superfast. Well done, Charlie Grice, he did great. He ran

:24:34.:24:40.

extremely well, and I think Mekhissi-Benabbad was there to prove

:24:41.:24:43.

something. He was running in a very high emotional place. Ingebrigsten,

:24:44.:24:54.

the champion, running powerfully, and just going past him, but then he

:24:55.:24:58.

is suddenly appears on the outside, the men who won the steeplechase and

:24:59.:25:03.

had his medal taken away, but he looks comparable in third place,

:25:04.:25:11.

just behind Charlie Grice, Moukrime, powerful and strong, looking good.

:25:12.:25:16.

The champion, Ingebrigsten, coming on the outside there, Grice, really

:25:17.:25:22.

holding on, and at the moment, you cannot see the disqualified

:25:23.:25:26.

steeplechase champion, he has, on the wide outside on a strange sort

:25:27.:25:31.

of race, just like last night, we still cannot see him, he is on the

:25:32.:25:36.

outside, I am sure, and Charlie Grice, comfortable, strong,

:25:37.:25:43.

finishing well, and for the first time, there goes Mekhissi-Benabbad,

:25:44.:25:46.

and Charlie Grice is down there to explain a good run to children's.

:25:47.:25:53.

Thanks a lot. It was a strong run and an accomplished when from you.

:25:54.:26:03.

The -- to fill Jones. I treated it as a final, and they came through. A

:26:04.:26:11.

bit of a bump. He managed to keep your composure. I knew it was going

:26:12.:26:15.

to be a scrap so why try to stay on my feet. I'm just glad I pulled

:26:16.:26:20.

through. How did you feel coming into this morning? I felt good. I am

:26:21.:26:30.

feeling in really good strength -- shape after my training. What do you

:26:31.:26:35.

hope to get out of it now that you have put yourself in there? I just

:26:36.:26:41.

want to run my best. It is all about tactics and there are a lot of us

:26:42.:26:45.

around a similar level, so I got eight day to recover now to be ready

:26:46.:26:51.

for the final. All the best. Cheers. Well done. His coach will be

:26:52.:26:59.

delighted with that. It is all about getting your tactics right, and he

:27:00.:27:04.

did that perfectly. Ingebrigsten, Mekhissi-Benabbad and Moukrime. That

:27:05.:27:15.

was the first heat and the second one is to come. A little further

:27:16.:27:25.

down, this is the point, if you cannot sprint, even if you run the

:27:26.:27:29.

fastest times, you can be in trouble. Let's just tidy up the

:27:30.:27:37.

women's steeplechase qualifiers. We saw events earlier on. Schlumpf is

:27:38.:27:43.

the German word for Smurf. She is through. Fougberg looked good.

:27:44.:27:53.

Kowalska and Cassondra also making it good -- through as fast as

:27:54.:28:01.

losers. And here is confirmation of the athletes who have qualified for

:28:02.:28:13.

the high jump final. And the Green, a final attempt of a 1.89. -- Emma

:28:14.:28:23.

Green. No Morgan, unfortunately. The 1.85 was not enough. She cleared on

:28:24.:28:32.

her second attempt. In retrospect, Mekhissi-Benabbad has been the

:28:33.:28:39.

qualified -- disqualified. They say that on clothing a big -- they say

:28:40.:28:51.

something thereabouts disrobing. He qualified, bizarrely. He almost

:28:52.:28:59.

disrespected that field as well, but probably was recovering from last

:29:00.:29:07.

night. He has not had that long to recover and you have had to deal

:29:08.:29:10.

with all of the turmoil of the disqualification. He warmed up

:29:11.:29:13.

somewhere separately this morning and came very late to declare for

:29:14.:29:20.

this heat and just sat at the back of the field and left his running

:29:21.:29:24.

very late. Charlie Grice was running very impressively and looking good

:29:25.:29:28.

going into that final, but Mekhissi-Benabbad, he came through

:29:29.:29:34.

very fast and was in doubt until about the last five metres. Some

:29:35.:29:38.

interesting shots at the end there with Mekhissi-Benabbad, he was there

:29:39.:29:45.

with the men that he fought. He looked distressed. He almost looked

:29:46.:29:48.

like he was about to cry even on the starting line. On reflection, he

:29:49.:29:55.

clearly is regretting his action last night. He feels it was very

:29:56.:29:59.

harsh. We all have different opinions on it, but he is clearly

:30:00.:30:04.

very emotional. We saw his reaction at the end of the race as well. Now

:30:05.:30:08.

we are going to go back to Steve Cram for an update on the men's 50 K

:30:09.:30:15.

walk. Sad news for the world champion of Ireland's, you have had

:30:16.:30:19.

to withdrawal. He has not been disqualified. Tom Bosworth, that is

:30:20.:30:27.

really sad for Robert. He has obviously been struggling. I am not

:30:28.:30:40.

sure what it was, I heard he had to stop quickly to stretch.

:30:41.:30:46.

It might have been something up with his hip or his hamstring.

:30:47.:30:56.

That is a shame for him, Diniz is still leading. Attempting to defend

:30:57.:31:03.

his title. He looked really good the last time we saw him. This is Toth

:31:04.:31:09.

who is in third place. He is walking really well.

:31:10.:31:21.

Diniz is certainly going some speed. It will be an incredible time if he

:31:22.:31:27.

keeps this up. This is how he races and he looks as though he will

:31:28.:31:34.

cruise to victory. Good crowds downtown. It has dried out a lot. It

:31:35.:31:39.

is bringing people out to watch and there is the leader. Heading in the

:31:40.:31:42.

opposite direction and it is a good lead he has.

:31:43.:31:49.

We all got a bit seasick with the way that camera went across and back

:31:50.:31:59.

again! Second heat of the men's 1500 metres coming up. Chris O'Hare in

:32:00.:32:04.

this one. It would have taken great encouragement from what Charlie

:32:05.:32:07.

Grice did. With 16 athletes in each of these

:32:08.:32:20.

heats, it will be tough. He needs to go out and use the advantage of it

:32:21.:32:23.

being the second heat to try to make sure he goes a little bit faster. To

:32:24.:32:28.

go under the 3.39 times they are sitting on. Watch out for Tesfaye,

:32:29.:32:33.

the young German athlete, in here as well. Chris is moving on with each

:32:34.:32:40.

race this season and I think you will be encouraged from the

:32:41.:32:46.

Commonwealth Games. He did everything right and he will be

:32:47.:32:48.

looking to take another step forward. Going back to what Brendan

:32:49.:32:56.

mentioning commentary about there being too many athletes. We are not

:32:57.:33:01.

exactly pushed for time this morning, why not have three races

:33:02.:33:03.

instead of two? I do not know. I think, when it is

:33:04.:33:18.

around 15 or 16 athletes, sometimes they ask the athletes what they want

:33:19.:33:22.

and sometimes it is just a decision made by the organisers. Andrew, some

:33:23.:33:26.

good names in this one to follow on from your Smurf conversation.

:33:27.:33:42.

There is Hochstrasser about to get introduced to the crowd.

:33:43.:33:52.

All of these athletes know what they have to do. Tesfaye of Germany, he

:33:53.:34:02.

was the quickest in the last lap in the last race.

:34:03.:34:32.

Ozbilen, formerly of Kenya. Chris O'Hare, we will certainly see from

:34:33.:34:49.

him, nobody wears the effort in his face as clearly as he does. He gives

:34:50.:34:54.

absolutely everything and this is tight qualifying. Only format to go

:34:55.:34:57.

through automatically and at first he was quick. -- only four to go

:34:58.:35:02.

through automatically. The first heat was quick.

:35:03.:35:11.

They have set off at a decent pace. They know the pace of the first heat

:35:12.:35:20.

and they know it has to be reasonably quick.

:35:21.:35:25.

Filip Ingebrigsten is in there, younger brother of Henrik

:35:26.:35:33.

Ingebrigtsen. He is a man on a mission, with a point to prove.

:35:34.:35:40.

Ozbilen, a class at it, and in front at the moment. The first 300 metres

:35:41.:35:52.

rand really quickly by Ozbilen. We have seen him do that before. We

:35:53.:35:58.

have seen him lead quickly. I wonder if he will do that today. Ten of

:35:59.:36:08.

these men have already run 3.39 or better this year so they have the

:36:09.:36:12.

chances. There is Chris O'Hare running sensibly. The pace is fast

:36:13.:36:18.

so he can just relax there. As I say that, they all start bumbling into

:36:19.:36:24.

one in each other. Germany caused a bit of a problem but Chris O'Hare

:36:25.:36:33.

was very aware of that. Chris O'Hare sitting alongside the Latvian

:36:34.:36:37.

runner. Just ahead of Benitz, the promising young German. Ozbilen out

:36:38.:36:45.

in front. Carvalho and Tesfaye in there. Robinson as well. Chris

:36:46.:36:54.

O'Hare sitting at the back. Look out for the 800-metre time. Just inside

:36:55.:37:00.

that at the moment, they are moving along with Italy's pace. -- moving

:37:01.:37:05.

along with a decent pace. There is now a new leader and this

:37:06.:37:17.

is a strong drive and it will have to stay like this. His pace looks

:37:18.:37:23.

good. It could be well under 3.39 at this pace at the moment. A couple of

:37:24.:37:28.

runners lagging behind the field. There will be no chance of them

:37:29.:37:35.

catching this. Chris O'Hare now on the outside of Robinson from

:37:36.:37:39.

Ireland. Coming up to the bell, he is the fourth or fifth place. He is

:37:40.:37:53.

in a good position. Bustos is gone and El Kabbouri of Italy fell as

:37:54.:38:01.

well. They have been moving at a good pace. Chris O'Hare likes to hit

:38:02.:38:05.

the front with some distance to go. Getting himself away from any

:38:06.:38:11.

trouble. The other Spaniard, Olmedo making a move as well. The front for

:38:12.:38:20.

looking strong at the moment. -- the front four. Chris O'Hare, still some

:38:21.:38:27.

work to be done. Here he is gritting his teeth. He has opened up a bit of

:38:28.:38:30.

a gap, you need to calm down a little bit. This is when you need to

:38:31.:38:35.

look around and see that you have a bit of room to spare. Don't waste

:38:36.:38:43.

too much energy. Robinson comes through for Ireland. Ozbilen not

:38:44.:38:50.

automatically through but again, it was quick. So I think you might go

:38:51.:38:57.

through but Chris O'Hare, touch and go for Ozbilen, but Chris O'Hare, a

:38:58.:38:59.

good, strong run. Brendan, that was a strong run and

:39:00.:39:12.

he reread did blast it down the final 100. I think Chris thought

:39:13.:39:19.

that was the final! But he ran really well.

:39:20.:39:29.

There goes Chris O'Hare getting ready to run this one like a final

:39:30.:39:35.

and he is attacking it now. Running powerfully on the back straight.

:39:36.:39:41.

Olmedo making his way through, into second place. Chris O'Hare realises

:39:42.:39:46.

there is a bunch of them on his shoulder and he wants to be in the

:39:47.:39:50.

first four. He glances over his shoulder and sees there are a feud

:39:51.:39:54.

to many for comfort and the accelerator brilliantly into the

:39:55.:39:58.

finishing straight. He has got it won but he decides he is going to

:39:59.:40:01.

keep going. Robinson of Ireland running strongly and splitting the

:40:02.:40:09.

two Germans. They really good run by Chris O'Hare and Robinson qualified

:40:10.:40:15.

as well. Determination, the man, as you said, with his determination on

:40:16.:40:20.

his face and look at him, toughing it out and working hard. Olmedo

:40:21.:40:26.

comes to be second. That was an impressive run overall. He worked so

:40:27.:40:33.

hard. He ran in Moscow last year, he ran out of legs in the final and it

:40:34.:40:36.

was a great effort to make the final. Just a final look around

:40:37.:40:41.

their, knowing he can ease down a little bit but look, you did not

:40:42.:40:45.

ease very much. I don't think Ozbilen will qualify with that time.

:40:46.:40:51.

Robinson, the Irish athlete, finishing strongly and he knows he

:40:52.:40:54.

has made it as well with Benitz and Tesfaye. A very good run from Chris

:40:55.:40:58.

O'Hare. That makes good viewing. I was happy

:40:59.:41:09.

with that. I try to stay out of too much trouble in the first couple of

:41:10.:41:14.

laps. But it kept finding me. If you trips and falls. -- a few trips and

:41:15.:41:18.

falls. I am happy with it. 300 to go and I

:41:19.:41:34.

thought, should I sit or press and get to the front? My inpatients

:41:35.:41:39.

meant that I pressed to get to the front. Not sure my coach will be

:41:40.:41:46.

happy without! I put my foot to the floor with 150 to go and I expected

:41:47.:41:49.

them to be coming right on my shoulder at that point. 50 to go, I

:41:50.:41:58.

thought, I don't want to say he's the than I thought, it sounds a bit

:41:59.:42:03.

egotistical! But now I have a day in between and I can get some easy

:42:04.:42:08.

running done and make sure I am ready. Charlie said you run that

:42:09.:42:14.

round like a final. Now you are in the final, you believe anything is

:42:15.:42:21.

possible? Sure. If you go into a heat at this level, so many guys run

:42:22.:42:28.

34, 35, 36. If you go into a race like that, just to run it as easy as

:42:29.:42:32.

possible, you will be sitting and watching it on Sunday. I got an

:42:33.:42:43.

extra little boost. I think Charlie and myself have got a great shot. At

:42:44.:42:48.

least a bronze and silver. Exciting times ahead.

:42:49.:42:55.

He is still based over in the states after his college days.

:42:56.:43:13.

These are the standings of the heptathlon we saw yesterday. The

:43:14.:43:20.

overnight leader, Thiam, 19-year-old Belgium with a huge high jump. Not

:43:21.:43:24.

having a great second day. He will be entering day two in the lead.

:43:25.:43:34.

This is the long jump, round two. Schafer of Germany.

:43:35.:43:55.

She looks as though she is right up there in terms of what she is

:43:56.:44:02.

capable of. Accumulating points. We just the javelin throw and the 800

:44:03.:44:08.

metres to come. Schafer in second place overnight, behind Thiam. The

:44:09.:44:17.

German has improved immensely over 2014. In every event, including this

:44:18.:44:30.

one by the looks of things. This is a new personal best of 6.3. As we

:44:31.:44:34.

move across to an athlete who does have a very strong second day,

:44:35.:44:39.

Nadine Broersen. In third place overnight. If the stats are anything

:44:40.:44:45.

to go by, that was a big jump, saw the red flag... Way over the board.

:44:46.:44:54.

Her first attempt of 6.16 centimetres will be her best so far.

:44:55.:45:02.

On paper at least, she is the athlete that should take gold.

:45:03.:45:07.

Another athlete with a strong second day, Schwarzkopf of Germany. She

:45:08.:45:13.

went from seventh to silver, behind Jessica Ennis-Hill at the Olympics.

:45:14.:45:27.

May be struggling a little bit. Just shows, you cannot just do it on

:45:28.:45:38.

paper, it is how you feel, with slightly tired legs. Schwarzkopf,

:45:39.:45:48.

her best is 6.34, and it looks as though she is just shy of that. She

:45:49.:45:54.

could take a medal here. A slight improvement for the German. The

:45:55.:46:02.

overall leader coming into this event of the seven, Thiam of

:46:03.:46:09.

Belgium. Can she long jump? Goodspeed. Legs came down early and

:46:10.:46:19.

the red flag was raised. That was an encouragement on the plasticine for

:46:20.:46:26.

the 19-year-old, 6.23 at her very best, 6.18 in the first round. So,

:46:27.:46:38.

then, field event rib acro qualification, and this is an

:46:39.:46:41.

athlete who should do it with ease. -- the discus. The discus flew. On

:46:42.:46:58.

May four athletes over 65 metres. She is four metres ahead of the best

:46:59.:47:03.

in Europe and is probably now the favourite to take the gold in the

:47:04.:47:09.

final tomorrow evening. She goes through to that final. She looks a

:47:10.:47:23.

favourite here at the European Championships.

:47:24.:47:35.

My goodness me. Andy Turner is the European champion! He will not be

:47:36.:47:44.

able to take that smile off his quite long time. He is a fighter, he

:47:45.:47:53.

is a soldier. He should be proud of what he has achieved. I certainly

:47:54.:47:59.

am. Andy Turner is in the house, and a welcome indeed. The Memphis

:48:00.:48:06.

championships for you, having announced your retirement. --

:48:07.:48:12.

momentous championships. Yes. It has been an absolute Rohler coaster of a

:48:13.:48:19.

career. I wanted to go out on my own terms. I am finally in one piece. It

:48:20.:48:26.

is a decision I have not taken lightly. It has been playing on my

:48:27.:48:30.

mind for a wild now. I wanted to go out on my own terms and I have done.

:48:31.:48:40.

It sits well with me to be finishing at the end of this year. In terms of

:48:41.:48:47.

going through the qualifications, semifinals, knowing it was your last

:48:48.:48:53.

time, what were your emotions like, because you have always worn your

:48:54.:48:58.

heart on your sleeve. It felt like it was another championships. I had

:48:59.:49:00.

the same and nerves on the starting line, albeit slightly different

:49:01.:49:06.

nerves, it was more of a case of, I want to do this for myself and I

:49:07.:49:11.

want to go out on a high for myself as opposed to representing my

:49:12.:49:15.

country and giving somebody -- everyone else something to cheer

:49:16.:49:19.

about. I just wanted to run the best race I could. I don't think I did.

:49:20.:49:25.

Watching this race back, it is time to call it a day! You should say

:49:26.:49:32.

that before: Does. It is a top school in here. You were so

:49:33.:49:38.

emotional. I found personally a sense of relief went you had told

:49:39.:49:43.

everybody that Schrage once you had told everybody you were retiring. --

:49:44.:49:49.

once you had told everybody that you are retiring. There is a belief that

:49:50.:49:54.

washes over you. I am with you on that one. I did feel nervous but I

:49:55.:49:59.

knew it was my last one. You kind of relax, it is a relaxed nervous

:50:00.:50:03.

tension that you have. The kind of contradicts itself but it is true.

:50:04.:50:07.

Although I was nervous, I wasn't ready for it, and in you are ready

:50:08.:50:12.

for it and you know it is coming, you appreciate it that much more,

:50:13.:50:16.

and that is what I had to do, just cross that line, at least make the

:50:17.:50:24.

line, and just as soon as I crossed the line, I was slightly

:50:25.:50:31.

disappointed, but at the same time I was relieved, it was over and a big

:50:32.:50:35.

weight off my shoulders. The important thing for you is the fact

:50:36.:50:38.

that you finished your raised that way, because all of the athletes,

:50:39.:50:42.

you always so you could do that much better if you could just perform a

:50:43.:50:46.

little better, but it is on your terms, and you are saying, OK, and

:50:47.:50:51.

none of us are judging you on that performance, we will revamp or the

:50:52.:50:54.

Commonwealth Games and all the other things that you have achieved --

:50:55.:50:58.

remember the Commonwealth Games and all of the things that you have

:50:59.:51:01.

achieved. You will always think you could do better, but you will always

:51:02.:51:07.

have all this great victories. 2010 in particular. -- those great

:51:08.:51:16.

victories. The men on the left is to everybody expected to take the

:51:17.:51:23.

medal. You capitalized. He took that victory. I was jumping up and down

:51:24.:51:27.

thinking, hold it down! It was brilliant to see you do that. The

:51:28.:51:36.

finalist, the different the -- the final was completely different. In

:51:37.:51:41.

the final, I thought, please don't do that again, and every member

:51:42.:51:45.

getting to the seven turtle and thinking, you know that thing, you

:51:46.:51:50.

the -- seventh hurdle and thinking, you know that thing, you smell

:51:51.:51:53.

blood, and they went for it with everything I had a mad I remember to

:51:54.:51:58.

this day thinking, don't make a mess of this, keep it clean, and I turned

:51:59.:52:04.

clean their ears and there is no better feeling than knowing you are

:52:05.:52:08.

in the lead. -- cleared the barriers. You crossed the line with

:52:09.:52:14.

your arms in the air, there is no better emotion than that. Regardless

:52:15.:52:19.

of what ideal in my life, I can take that memory of crossing the line of

:52:20.:52:25.

the gold medallist and I can cherish it. We had a debate earlier on about

:52:26.:52:31.

what point in the hurdle rate do you push it, or do you focus on

:52:32.:52:36.

technique when you know that you can smell the lines there, and the

:52:37.:52:40.

danger is getting into the racing mode, and that is where mistakes

:52:41.:52:44.

happen. It is controlled aggression and that is what you have to focus

:52:45.:52:48.

on. The first half of the race with a complete blur, but as soon as I

:52:49.:52:53.

knew was a -- as soon as they the head, I need to stop pushing. I did

:52:54.:52:59.

not to lose my lead and it is controlled aggression. I finished

:53:00.:53:03.

this last hurdles cleanly, and it was a great feeling to cross the

:53:04.:53:08.

line with my arms aloft. We're talking about the last night. When

:53:09.:53:21.

you went into a championship final, you said you made sure you did not

:53:22.:53:27.

have a hurdle. The final in Delhi was an example of that. I knew going

:53:28.:53:33.

into. I was the favourite, and I did not get the best start, but by

:53:34.:53:37.

around here, I'm UI was winning the race, so it is a case of just

:53:38.:53:43.

maintenance -- I knew I was winning the race, so it is a case of just

:53:44.:53:48.

maintenance and clearing the barriers. I, have run faster but I

:53:49.:53:54.

did not need to push it. I -- I did not have to run faster, I did not

:53:55.:53:59.

need to push it. Ten clean derri?res, taking the gold -- ten

:54:00.:54:06.

clean derri?res, taking the gold, it was a relief.

:54:07.:54:09.

Have you got any races left after the sun? Should you rent -- Heidi

:54:10.:54:26.

that any races left after this one? I feel ready for it. I never thought

:54:27.:54:29.

in a million years I would feel ready for it. I can honestly say

:54:30.:54:35.

that I am ready to do new things. I have had such a good career, I have

:54:36.:54:40.

got so many memories, ideas want to go out running like a did last night

:54:41.:54:45.

again. I don't want that to continuously happen. I don't want it

:54:46.:54:49.

to be a slippery slope and being that the guy that everyone thinks

:54:50.:54:52.

should have called it a day earlier on. I am happy with where I am

:54:53.:54:56.

finishing in my career. If Iran's fast, it is a bonus. -- if I run

:54:57.:55:05.

fast, it is a bonus. Chris Tomlinson is going to hate me for saying

:55:06.:55:15.

this. I agree with him. When I was 16, I jumped 7.23 and I beat him,

:55:16.:55:22.

and he did not shake my hand. He did not and he knows he did not! Well,

:55:23.:55:28.

Greg knows what it is like when you do something that Chris doesn't

:55:29.:55:31.

like, doesn't he? Let's not go there! I'm not saying I'm going to

:55:32.:55:38.

be good at long jump, I might not even job as well as they did then,

:55:39.:55:42.

but I love the event and I want to have another go at it. Andy, you are

:55:43.:55:49.

fit and healthy, you spent the last three years with your Achilles

:55:50.:55:54.

giving your best, and the long jump is not going -- with your Achilles

:55:55.:56:00.

giving you problems, and a long jump is not going to be good for you. The

:56:01.:56:04.

doctors will be pulling their hair out! At least they have by doctors

:56:05.:56:10.

on tap! That is what happens when you retire. It is a shock to the

:56:11.:56:16.

system. You have not got all that back up. It is expensive as well!

:56:17.:56:22.

When you are funded, you get the luxuries of the financial side of

:56:23.:56:27.

it, the medical side of it. The medical side for me has always been

:56:28.:56:31.

the most important part. This year, obviously, I am being cut from

:56:32.:56:35.

funding, but I'm UI would not get funding and it is fine. -- I knew I

:56:36.:56:41.

would not get funding and it is fine. It is not a case of all day

:56:42.:56:45.

every day, it is just every so often, and not having that, having

:56:46.:56:49.

my wife get her elbow in and to get in my back, that is what I have been

:56:50.:56:56.

doing, and it has been difficult. I cannot expect to be funded. It is

:56:57.:57:04.

understandable. You have to do what you have to do. 2010, two gold

:57:05.:57:09.

medals. Was 2011 perhaps your best race, your best performance? No, I

:57:10.:57:19.

do not think so. The 2011 race, mixture of emotions. I crossed the

:57:20.:57:25.

line in fourth place. You are never happy with the race you run. You

:57:26.:57:30.

always think you can do better. I crossed the line in fourth. I looked

:57:31.:57:35.

at that and felt, I came forth in the world and they have to be happy

:57:36.:57:40.

with that. These things happen in races every day. It is very

:57:41.:57:47.

unfortunate. I gained from that. It was a mixer of emotions. -- mixture

:57:48.:57:54.

of emotions that I am chuffed to bits that my children have a big

:57:55.:57:59.

medal to show at the school show and tell. 2010, the gold medal in

:58:00.:58:07.

Barcelona, that was my favourite race. And more from EUL is a bit

:58:08.:58:12.

later, but we will catch up with Steve Cram. -- and more from you a

:58:13.:58:17.

little bit later. History being made here, because this men here is

:58:18.:58:21.

performing brilliantly well. He is the defending champion and he is

:58:22.:58:28.

well inside world record pace. He is looking at his watch and everybody

:58:29.:58:36.

knows. Tombaugh thread is getting excited. He is going to smash it at

:58:37.:58:41.

this rate. This is incredible. This is what he does. Nobody can catch up

:58:42.:58:47.

with him. It is brilliant. Absolutely brilliant. This is going

:58:48.:58:54.

to be big time. -- big-time. The two Russians here try to get up to him

:58:55.:59:07.

earlier on. They are all walking well, walking fast. They're going

:59:08.:59:17.

quickly. Three or four minutes behind but they are all heading for

:59:18.:59:20.

personal bests in the middle positions. This is just brilliant

:59:21.:59:31.

for the event. It is great to see the two European leaders really

:59:32.:59:36.

ahead of the Russians, who often dominates over world races and

:59:37.:59:42.

European races. It is brilliant. The world record is three hours, 34

:59:43.:59:54.

minutes and 14 seconds, and he has already got the flag and is already

:59:55.:59:58.

celebrating. He is got to be careful. He does not have any

:59:59.:00:03.

warnings against him. The conditions have been really good. It is a bit

:00:04.:00:07.

breezy. You were down there the other day. It must be reasonably

:00:08.:00:11.

protected. I did not feel much win-win I was racing. He does not

:00:12.:00:18.

care -- I do not feel that much wind when I was racing. He doesn't care,

:00:19.:00:23.

he is loving it and enjoying it, and what a career he has had. He won the

:00:24.:00:31.

European Championships first in 2006 on again in Barcelona in 2010. At

:00:32.:00:41.

the age of 36, he is on fine form. Just look at the way he is storming

:00:42.:00:47.

to the title. I love the fact he is celebrating early, but let's hope he

:00:48.:01:11.

does not take his shirt off like Mekhissi.

:01:12.:01:21.

Look how much he is enjoying this. I don't know how he can be enjoying it

:01:22.:01:30.

at 49 K but he must be! He has been training all year for this. This is

:01:31.:01:35.

obviously the target. Perfect conditions, a good course and a

:01:36.:01:40.

great athlete. Technique looks solid. He is just passing the

:01:41.:01:58.

arthouse area. The cathedral. It dominates the skyline in downtown

:01:59.:02:01.

Zurich. He is heading towards the lake. Go for the world record,

:02:02.:02:11.

surely! He wants a Moroccan flag as well. He is that far under it, he

:02:12.:02:20.

can do it, incredible! Surely he will want to go as fast as he could,

:02:21.:02:30.

look at this! What a performance. Fantastic, just short of two minutes

:02:31.:02:38.

under the time. This is brilliant. He needs to find the finish line. He

:02:39.:02:44.

is the gold-medallist, the European champion and now the world record

:02:45.:02:49.

holder in the 50 kilometres walk. Look how much that means the him.

:02:50.:02:54.

William performance from Diniz, completely destroyed the field,

:02:55.:02:58.

going quicker and quicker as the race went on. -- brilliant

:02:59.:02:59.

performance from Diniz. There are shortage distances and

:03:00.:03:28.

local race and Diniz is a legend in this event. He is a father of two

:03:29.:03:34.

and a bit of a wine expert as well. I expect there will be a couple of

:03:35.:03:37.

glasses quaffed tonight in celebration. He is congratulated by

:03:38.:03:45.

the world champion. It was not his day-to-day but he must be saying,

:03:46.:03:51.

what a performance. He has absolutely torn apart the world

:03:52.:03:58.

record. The walking fraternity, it is a tight-knit group. As you know

:03:59.:04:06.

only too well, Tom. The man in second place, having a great race,

:04:07.:04:13.

Toth from the Czech Republic. Everyone is re-friendly and

:04:14.:04:19.

supportive. -- everyone is really friendly and supportive. This man

:04:20.:04:26.

has just got better and better. He is one to watch in Beijing next year

:04:27.:04:34.

as well as Rio. This is the man in silver medal position and he is

:04:35.:04:37.

clear so no worries for him, he just needs to concentrate over these last

:04:38.:04:44.

few hundred metres. He himself, if he keeps going, will go to the world

:04:45.:04:52.

top ten list in 50, to walks. Conditions are good, the course was

:04:53.:04:55.

good you said. Tramlines to negotiate. They are quite easy to

:04:56.:05:03.

miss. The turn looks slightly easier, slightly wider in the 20

:05:04.:05:07.

kilometres which made it quite tough. Clearly that was necessary

:05:08.:05:10.

because of the distance these guys are doing. They could not be turning

:05:11.:05:19.

on such a tight turn. He is already starting to begin his celebrations,

:05:20.:05:23.

being cheered on by supporters at the side and a little luck and a

:05:24.:05:27.

kiss to the camera. He knows, he has had a great race and he must know he

:05:28.:05:32.

is on for a fast time as well. And a national record it would be. His

:05:33.:05:38.

technique looks great as well. Completely solid all the way. He is

:05:39.:05:44.

a quality Walker and these guys, they aim for this race, they don't

:05:45.:05:50.

get to do many 50 kilometres fun. It goes on and it hurts but these guys

:05:51.:05:58.

are past it today. He has not stopped to find a national flag, he

:05:59.:06:01.

is just concentrating on the last few hundred metres. Toth of the

:06:02.:06:10.

Slovak Republic will be taking the silver medal. Now he can start to

:06:11.:06:16.

celebrate. Just watch the clock. He may well end up with a time that

:06:17.:06:20.

will in fact put him in the world's top ten.

:06:21.:06:29.

The silver medal goes to Toth of the Slovak Republic in three hours, 36

:06:30.:06:42.

and 33, they all thereabouts. The gold-medallist is Diniz, a new world

:06:43.:06:45.

record in the 50 kilometres walk. Silver goes to Toth and the minor

:06:46.:06:49.

places we will tidy up later. Schafer, six metres 30 in the long

:06:50.:07:00.

jump. Watch out for Nana Djimou of France,

:07:01.:07:15.

in fourth place at the moment but very strong in the javelin and can

:07:16.:07:16.

run a fairly decent 800 metres. STUDIO: What a race. Those French

:07:17.:07:30.

have to be careful, was that a bona fides effort Colin? He picked up the

:07:31.:07:36.

flag and continued his journey, what is the difference? He set a new

:07:37.:07:41.

world record. There is only one way to celebrate. It is fantastic. It is

:07:42.:07:48.

a long wait, 50 kilometres. You get an idea of how quickly they are

:07:49.:07:55.

going. It is amazing. Disappointment for Robert Heffernan. But I think he

:07:56.:07:58.

will struggle to live with that pace.

:07:59.:08:04.

I remember speaking to him last year when he won the world title and he

:08:05.:08:10.

was so excited about coming in and doing that and perhaps adding this

:08:11.:08:14.

title to his world title. He will have watched this and thinking, that

:08:15.:08:19.

was pretty respectful a performance. As an athlete, he is very

:08:20.:08:25.

respectful. But finally, Sir gold medal for France. Trivia question

:08:26.:08:32.

for you, when was the last time a world record was set in a European

:08:33.:08:36.

Championships? 1986. Fatima Whitbread. That is a good one

:08:37.:08:47.

but it wasn't. It was in the relay by the French. The four x 100 metres

:08:48.:08:56.

in 1990. A quick word on the heptathlon. It is looking good. I am

:08:57.:09:02.

still expecting Russell love to come through. And Nana Djimou is capable

:09:03.:09:10.

of throwing 67 metres in the javelin. That event is crucial. That

:09:11.:09:15.

will set you up for the 800. They will all know what they have to do

:09:16.:09:21.

by then. Thiam, I get so frustrated, because she could end up out of

:09:22.:09:24.

those medals does because she has such a poor 800 metres. Although she

:09:25.:09:30.

is very talented, she needs to work on that event. Let's have a look

:09:31.:09:36.

forward to what is coming up in terms of Olympic sport.

:09:37.:10:31.

Andy Turner is still with us and you talked about being comfortable with

:10:32.:10:37.

retiring and part of a package is knowing what you are going to do

:10:38.:10:42.

next. For the last two years, I have been personal training as well and

:10:43.:10:46.

that has been going really well. I run a business called antics which

:10:47.:10:50.

is an intense circuit training class but it is fun and it is dancing and

:10:51.:10:57.

different. We do two classes a week and it is massive. We are already in

:10:58.:11:03.

talks with a large chain of gymnasiums to get it out to more

:11:04.:11:08.

sport gyms. I am going to focus on that, I would love to do more TV

:11:09.:11:12.

stuff and radio star. For the time being, I am going to go and spend

:11:13.:11:17.

some time with my family and see what happens. We have a tweet,

:11:18.:11:24.

asking what was your favourite race or experience? It was not in the

:11:25.:11:32.

hurdles for a start! LAUGHTER We cannot wait to hear! Villa my

:11:33.:11:35.

favourite event is the 200-metre hurdles. I would drop the 110 races

:11:36.:11:47.

in a heartbeat. You ran it Colin in about 22.6. It is on a straight in

:11:48.:11:54.

Manchester and it is ten hurdles and I love it. It encompasses everything

:11:55.:12:01.

I like, I like 200 metres and the hurdles. Put those two things

:12:02.:12:04.

together and you would never see me running the 110 again. Could you

:12:05.:12:18.

have gone to more hurdles? I have ran it in the relay. It is something

:12:19.:12:23.

I wanted to do but I did it when I was 16 and I fell over at the last

:12:24.:12:26.

hurdle because I was so tired! LAUGHTER

:12:27.:12:31.

It is something I maybe should have tried. I love the 110 s, I always

:12:32.:12:37.

feel like I have unfinished business in them. I did not want to leave

:12:38.:12:45.

that event without having accomplished something that I felt I

:12:46.:12:49.

could do. I probably should have given it a try. Do you feel you have

:12:50.:12:54.

got the most out of yourself over the 110s? I am not going to say I

:12:55.:13:05.

was going to run 12.9, 13 seconds. I don't think I am the most talented

:13:06.:13:10.

athlete, I am a guy who just chipped away as much as possible and got the

:13:11.:13:14.

most out of myself when I could. I think my best years will have been

:13:15.:13:18.

the years when my Achilles was really bugging me. I would wake up

:13:19.:13:22.

and not be able to walk. I would not know if I could even train. It was

:13:23.:13:26.

really hard and disappointing because I know I was in good shape.

:13:27.:13:30.

The Achilles was always holding me back. I think I was robbed of

:13:31.:13:39.

running a personal best. I am going to take my gold medals over running

:13:40.:13:47.

faster any day of the week. I don't have any regrets. Andy, thank you

:13:48.:13:52.

for joining us. Your family will be very proud of you. You will be

:13:53.:13:57.

looking forward to this evening. We mentioned the 200 and 400 without

:13:58.:14:00.

the hurdles and really a chance for Britain to get medals. The men and

:14:01.:14:07.

the women's, they are looking so good and strong. Christine. You

:14:08.:14:17.

cannot write Chris Dean off at the championships and she looked good

:14:18.:14:22.

enough to win. -- Christine. Thank you very much. Five -- we have the

:14:23.:14:35.

men's 200-metre final. Adam Gemili. The women's 5,000-metre final. And

:14:36.:14:40.

maybe a clean sweep in the 400 metres.

:14:41.:14:52.

If they did not know who he was, goodness me, they do now. Look how

:14:53.:15:03.

much that means to him. He comes of age, the 20-year-old.
